The stiffening finishing of cotton fabrics has been widely used in textile industry. However, the notorious softening of stiffened fabrics attenuated the stiffening style during storage. To reveal crucial factors responsible for the softening phenomenon and elucidate the mechanism, cotton twill woven fabrics finished with polyacrylates (PAcr) stiffening agents were systematically analyzed. The sensitive index to stiffening effect, i.e. stiffness value, was found which can fully assess the handle changes of stiffened fabrics. The stiffness value of stiffened cotton fabrics decreased rapidly in the initial stage of storage, and the declining extent was related to the hygroscopic behavior of stiffened fabrics. Based on the hygroscopic kinetic data, hygroscopic-drying cyclic experiments, and morphology characterization, it was found that interfaces between cotton fibers and stiffening agent film were maintained during the whole hygroscopic process, and the reason for handle changes of stiffened cotton fabrics was ascribed to the reversible moisture-induced plasticization effect on PAcr stiffening agent film and cotton fibers. Furthermore, the underlying softening mechanism was further proposed in this work. Collectively, the present results are crucial for anti-softening in stiffening finishing of hydrophilic fabrics and an important part for the research on the mechanism of softening of stiffened fabrics. Many mule duck and Cherry Valley duck flocks in different duck-producing regions of China have shown signs of an apparently new disease designated 'short beak and dwarfism syndrome' (SBDS) since 2015. The disease is characterized by dyspraxia, weight loss, a protruding tongue, and high morbidity and low mortality rates. In order to characterize the etiological agent, a virus designated SBDSV M15 was isolated from allantoic fluid of dead embryos following serial passage in duck embryos. This virus causes a cytopathic effect in duck embryo fibroblast (DEF) cells. Using monoclonal antibody diagnostic assays, the SBDSV M15 isolate was positive for the antigen of goose parvovirus but not Muscovy duck parvovirus. A 348-bp (2604-2951) VP1gene fragment was amplified, and its sequence indicated that the virus was most closely related to a Hungarian GPV strain that was also isolated from mule ducks with SBDS disease. A similar disease was reproduced by inoculating birds with SBDSV M15. Together, these data indicate that SBDSV M15 is a GPV-related parvovirus causing SBDS disease and that it is divergent from classical GPV isolates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To investigate the possible role of recombination in the evolution of Muscovy duck parvovirus (MDPV) and goose parvovirus (GPV) in Taiwan, we analyzed a potentially significant recombination event that occurred only in GPV by comparing thirteen complete sequences of the capsid gene VP2 of GPV and MDPV. The recombination event occurred between GPV strain 06-0239 as the minor parent and strains 99-0808 as the major parent, which resulted in the GPV recombinant V325/TW03. GPV V325/TW03 is likely to represent a new genotype among the Taiwanese GPV strains. This represents the first evidence that intergenotype recombination within the VP2 gene cluster contributes to the genetic diversity of the VP2 genes of Taiwanese GPV field strains. Tembusu virus (TMUV) has been a causative agent of an acute egg-drop syndrome found in Chinese duck populations since at least 2010. In this paper, we report the characterization of a TMUV-like flavivirus (named CJD05) isolated from naturally infected egg-laying fowl. The virus was identified and then isolated from hens suffering from severe egg drop and fever in Fujian Province, China. The virus replicated well in MDEF and CEF cells, and its cytopathogenic effect (CPE) was apparent. Hemagglutinating activity (HA) was negative for this virus using erythrocytes from both chickens and pigeons. Viral particles were enveloped and approximately 45 nm in diameter, as observed by electron microscopy. Phylogenetic analysis of the full-length nucleotide sequence of CJD05 indicated that this virus is closely related to the duck-origin TMUV, belonging to Ntaya group of flavivirus. Most importantly, pathogenicity studies showed that CJD05 is highly virulent in 1-day-old chicks, 1-day-old Muscovy ducks, egg-laying chickens and shelducks. Our research highlights the increase in epidemic disease caused by avian TMUV, and subsequent outbreaks are becoming more complicated to treat. The dehydration-responsive element binding proteins (DREB1)/C-repeat (CRT) binding factors (CBF) function as transcription factors and play an important role in agricultural biotechnology and molecular biology studies of drought and freezing stress tolerance. We generated transgenic Lolium perenne plants containing the PCR-cloned Arabidopsis DREB1A/CBF3 gene ( AtDREB1A/CBF3) to study the function of this gene construct in drought and freezing tolerance in a species of turfgrass. Compared to the control, AtDREB1A/CBF3 transgenic L. perenne plants showed enhanced drought and freezing stress tolerance. The activities of the enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) were higher in transgenic plants than in the non-transgenic plant control. These results demonstrate that the expression of the AtDREB1A/CBF3 gene in transgenic L. perenne plants enhanced drought and freezing tolerance and that the increased stress tolerance was associated with the increased activities of antioxidant enzymes. By using the forest gap model-FAREAST, we simulated the effects of future climate change on forest composition and forest biomass of typical forests in northeastern China. We selected three different climate change scenarios, developed from GCMs results, of the ECHAM5-OM and HadCM3 models: the current climate, a warmer climate and a state of changing precipitation with higher temperatures. The results are as follows: if the climate does not change, the composition and forest biomass of the northeastern forests will retain their dynamic balance. A warmer climate is detrimental to the major forest types in the northeast. The percentage of major conifers is expected to decrease, along with a proportional increase of some broad-leafed species. The southern treeline of the mixed broad-leafed tree species/Korean pine forest in the temperate zone will tend to move northward. The warmer the climate, the more distinct the transition. If, furthermore, we were to take account of rainfall, the treeline in the northeast will tend to move northward. Rainfall seems to have little effect on the mixed broad-leafed tree species/Korean pine forests in the temperate zone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By the Empirical Mode Decomposition method, we analyzed the observed monthly average temperature in more than 700 stations from 1951–2001 over China. Simultaneously, the temperature variability of each station is calculated by this method, and classification chart of long term trend and temperature variability distributing chart of China are obtained, supported by GIS, 1 km×1 km resolution. The results show that: in recent 50 years, the temperature has increased by more than 0.4°C/10a in most parts of northern China, while in Southwest China and the middle and lower Yangtze Valley, the increase is not significant. The areas with a negative temperature change rate are distributed sporadically in Southwest China. Meanwhile, the temperature data from 1881 to 2001 in nine study regions in China are also analyzed, indicating that in the past 100 years, the temperature has been increasing all the way in Northeast China, North China, South China, Northwest China and Xinjiang and declining in Southwest China.
