The growth model of the interfacial Cu6Sn5 compound at the circular Cu/Sn3.5Ag interface has been established in this work. The present developed growth model can predict well the interfacial Cu6Sn5 compound growth curve at the circular-interface. We found that the interfacial Cu6Sn5 compound growth rate at the circular-interface is slower than that at the planar-interface. The major factor for the slower interfacial Cu6Sn5 compound growth rate at the circular-interface attributes to the increase of the interfacial reaction area at the circular Cu6Sn5/solder interface with the annealing time. It causes a larger driving force for the interfacial Cu6Sn5 compound to dissolve into the solder matrix, which reduces the growth of the interfacial Cu6Sn5 compound layer. Moreover, the effect of the Ag concentration on the reaction mechanism for the circular reaction interface was also studied. For the Ag-rich Sn5Ag solder matrix, smaller Sn grain size (larger grain boundary density) was observed. The larger grain boundary density promotes more Cu dissolution from the interfacial Cu6Sn5 compound layer into the Sn5Ag solder matrix. Hence, the growth of the interfacial Cu6Sn5 compound layer in the Ag-rich Sn5Ag system is slightly slower than that of the Sn3.5Ag system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the incidence of and risk factors for postoperative pneumonia and aspiration pneumonia after hip fracture surgery. Design: Retrospective cohort study from 2005 to 2021. Setting: Asan Medical Center in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Participants: A total 1,208 patients aged ≥ 65 years who underwent hip fracture surgery. Measurements: Postoperative pneumonia was defined as cases with new infiltration on chest x-ray or chest computed tomography (CT) after surgery or confirmed by a pulmonologist's consultation and diagnosis. Aspiration pneumonia was defined as: 1) radiologic findings of hospital-acquired pneumonia on chest radiographs or CT, medical record of aspiration pneumonia confirmed by a pulmonologist's consultation, and history of vomiting or aspiration, or 2) gravity-dependent opacity on chest CT when the history of vomiting or aspiration is ambiguous. Patient demographics, past medical history, pre-injury Koval score, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), blood test results, length of hospital stay, and in-hospital mortality were evaluated. A comparison analysis and binary logistic regression were performed to identify the incidence and risk factors for postoperative pneumonia and aspiration pneumonia. Results: Postoperative pneumonia was diagnosed in 47 patients (3.9%), including 20 with aspiration pneumonia (1.7%). In the multivariate analysis, postoperative delirium (odds ratio [OR], 3.42; P < 0.001), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) scores ≥ 3 (OR, 2.11; P = 0.021), and CCI (OR, 1.21; P = 0.013) were significant risk factors for postoperative pneumonia. Male sex (OR, 3.01; P = 0.017), postoperative delirium (OR, 3.16; P = 0.014), and preoperative serum albumin levels < 3.5 g/dL (OR, 7.00; P = 0.010) were significant risk factors for aspiration pneumonia. Conclusion: ASA classification ≥ 3, higher CCI, and postoperative delirium were the risk factors for postoperative pneumonia. Male sex, postoperative delirium, and lower preoperative serum albumin level were the risk factors for aspiration pneumonia. Thus, physicians should pay attention to patients with the risk factors. The present work investigated the effect of Ag additives on the consumption of cathode Cu pad under electromigration in a current-stressed Cu/Sn3.5Ag/Cu flip-chip structure. The consumption rate of a cathode Cu pad in a pure Sn system is faster than that of a cathode Cu pad in a Sn3.5Ag system at 80℃ by a factor of 10. Using the kinetics of the consumption equation, the activation energy in the consumption of a cathode Cu pad was calculated. The activation energy (0.65 eV) of the consumption of a cathode Cu pad in a Cu/Sn3.5Ag/Cu flip-chip structure under electromigration (EM) is slightly greater than that (0.62 eV) of the consumption of a cathode Cu pad in a Cu/Sn/Cu flip-chip structure under EM. The dissolution of Cu flux is discussed, and the possible effect of Ag additives on the consumption rate of a cathode Cu pad under EM is proposed. The Ag additives reduced the deficiency of Cu solubility in a solder matrix near the cathode Cu/solder interface, which is the main factor in the reduction of Cu pad consumption. Typically, Sn cannot be finished on Ni and Ag surfaces via the immersion process. In this work, through galvanic reaction, immersion Sn finish was processed on an immersion Ag finish coexisting with a Ni surface. Herein, the detailed mechanism of the reduction of Sn2+ ions on the immersion Ag surface through galvanic reaction is reported. Through transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis, the uncommon Ag4Sn phase, instead of the common Ag3Sn phase, was confirmed to form during the Sn immersion of the Ag immersion layer. The Ag4Sn phase was found to form between the Ag grains in the immersion Sn layer. The mixed Ag/Ag4Sn structure in the immersion Sn layer can be explained by the galvanic reaction. The preferred formation of the Ag4Sn during the Sn immersion of the Ag immersion layer is discussed from the viewpoint of thermodynamics. The changes in the Gibbs free energy of the formation of the Ag3Sn and Ag4Sn phases were calculated as − 3.67 and − 8.89 kJ/mol, respectively. This study was conducted to assess outcomes (according to patency) of vasectomy reversal (VR) in qualified patients with postvasectomy pain syndrome (PVPS). A total of 32 patients with PVPS undergoing VR between January 2000 and May 2010 were examined retrospectively. Of these, 68.8% (22/32) completed a study questionnaire, either onsite at the outpatient clinic or via telephone interview. Preoperative clinical findings, preoperative and postoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) pain scores, patency and pregnancy rate and overall patient satisfaction were analyzed. For the latter, a four-point rating of (1) cure, (2) improvement, (3) no change or (4) recurrence was used. The mean age was 45.09±4.42 years and the mean period of follow-up was 3.22 years (0.74-7.41). Patency rates were 68.2% (15/22) and pregnancy rates were 36.4% (8/22). The mean VAS was 6.64±1.00 preoperatively and 1.14±0.71 postoperatively (P<0.001). The difference in the mean preoperative and postoperative VAS was 6.00±1.25 (4-8) in the patency group and 4.43±0.98 (3-6) in the no patency group (P=0.011). A significant difference in procedural satisfaction with surgical outcome was observed between patency and no patency groups (P=0.014). In conclusion, in PVPS patients requiring VR, a significant difference was observed between the patency and no patency groups in terms of pain reduction and the degree of patient procedural satisfaction. Homeobox genes encode transcription factors that are essential for normal development and are often dysregulated in cancers. The molecular mechanisms that cause their misregulation in cancers are largely unknown. In this study, we investigate the mechanism by which the Six1 homeobox protein, which has a crucial role during development, is frequently deregulated in several poor outcome, aggressive, metastatic adult human cancers, including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma and pediatric malignancies such as rhabdomyosarcoma and Wilms’ tumor. Our results reveal that miRNA-185 translationally represses Six1 by binding to its 3′-untranslated region. Analyses of ovarian cancers, pediatric renal tumors and multiple breast cancer cell lines showed decreased miR-185 expression, paralleling an increase in Six1 levels. Further investigation revealed that miR-185 impedes anchorage-independent growth and cell migration, in addition to suppressing tumor growth in vivo, implicating it to be a potent tumor suppressor. Our results indicate that miR-185 mediates its tumor suppressor function by regulating cell-cycle proteins and Six1 transcriptional targets c-myc and cyclin A1. Furthermore, we show that miR-185 sensitizes Six1-overexpressing resistant cancer cells to apoptosis in general and tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL)-mediated apoptosis in particular. Together, our findings suggest that the altered expression of the novel tumor suppressor miR-185 may be one of the central events that leads to dysregulation of oncogenic protein Six1 in human cancers. The metal multi-user MEMS processes (MetalMUMPs) provide one nickel film, two silicon nitride films and one polysilicon film for constructing various nickel MEMS devices. The two silicon nitride films are either bonded together as a bi-layered structure or they sandwich the polysilicon film to form a tri-layered structure to support nickel structures. The residual stress difference of the two silicon nitride films causes undesired deformations of suspended MetalMUMPs devices. In this paper, the residual stress difference of the two MetalMUMPs silicon nitride thin films is calibrated and the result is 169 MPa. High expression of circulating vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been reported in patients with Kawasaki disease (KD). In the pathophysiology of KD, VEGF is considered to be involved, especially in the development of coronary artery lesions. This study aimed to examine whether the VEGF-634 promoter polymorphism is a marker of KD susceptibility or severity in Chinese patients in Taiwan. The study included 93 KD patients and 96 normal control subjects. Genotype and allelic frequencies for the VEGF gene polymorphism in the two groups were compared. The number of individuals with the VEGF-634 G/G genotype was significantly greater among the patients with KD than among the healthy control subjects ( p = 0.011). The odds ratio for the development of KD in individuals with the VEGF-634 G/G genotype was found to be 2.03 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.14–3.63) compared with the VEGF-634 G/C and VEGF-634 C/C genotypes. No significant difference was observed in the genotype or allelic frequencies of VEGF C-634 G polymorphism between the patients with and those without coronary artery lesions. To study the possible relation between parental social contact through occupation, a marker for a child's risk of infection, and childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), the parents of 294 children with ALL aged 0-14.9 years and 376 matched controls were interviewed about their jobs after their child's birth up to the age of 3 years. Job titles were assigned to a level of social contact, and an index of occupational social contact months was created using the level and the job duration. Positive interactions between this index and rural residence associated with an increased risk of childhood ALL and common ALL (c-ALL) were observed (interaction P-value=0.02 for both, using tertiles of contact months; interaction P-value=0.05 and 0.02 for ALL and c-ALL, respectively, using continuous contact months); such findings were not observed when job durations were ignored. The MaxiK channel plays a critical role in the regulation of corporal smooth muscle tone and thereby erectile function. Given that ageing results in a decline in erectile function, we determined changes in the expression of MaxiK, which might impact erectile function. Quantitative-polymerase chain reaction demonstrated that although there is no significant change in transcription of the α- and β-subunits that comprise the MaxiK channel, there are significant changes in the expression of transcripts encoding different splice variants. One transcript, SV1, is 13-fold increased in expression in the ageing rat corpora. SV1 has previously been reported to trap other isoforms of the MaxiK channel in the cytoplasm. Correlating with increased expression of SV1, we observed in older rats there is approximately a 13-fold decrease in MaxiK protein in the corpora cell membrane and a greater proportion is retained in the cytoplasm (approximately threefold). Quercetin, a flavonoid molecule ubiquitously present in nature, has multiple effects on cancer cells, including the inhibition of cell proliferation and migration. However, the responsible molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. We found that quercetin induces the expression of NAG-1 (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug activated gene-1), a TGF-β superfamily protein, during quercetin-induced apoptosis of HCT116 human colon carcinoma cells. Reporter assays using the luciferase constructs containing NAG-1 promoter region demonstrate that early growth response-1 (EGR-1) and p53 are required for quercetin-mediated activation of the NAG-1 promoter. Overexpression of NAG-1 enhanced the apoptotic effect of quercetin, but suppression of quercetin-induced NAG-1 expression by NAG-1 siRNA attenuated quercetin-induced apoptosis in HCT116 cells. Taken together, the present study demonstrates for the first time that quercetin induces apoptosis via NAG-1, providing a mechanistic basis for the apoptotic effect of quercetin in colon carcinoma cells. Kawasaki disease is an acute febrile illness typically elicited by vascitlitis and occurring in young children. We investigated the polymorphism of the angiotensin-l converting enzyme (ACE) gene in children with Kawasaki disease and also in agematched controls. A total of 107 children, with a mean age at diagnosis of 1.71 &plusmnn; 1.48 years, who suffered from Kawasaki disease and who were treated with aspirin as well as intravenous immunoglobulin were enrolled in this study. Control subjects consisted of 107 children, with a mean age of 1,84 &plusmnn; 1.20 years. The polymorphisms of the ACE gene, including I D , A-240T. and G2350A. were examined using a polymorase chain reaction method for Kawasaki disease patients and also for control subjects. We noted a significant difference in the distribution of the ACE gene I D genotype between Kawasaki disease and control groups. The ACE gene G2350A polymorphism and associated allelic frequencies demonstrated an association with Kawasaki disease. Our results revealed no evidence of any association between the ACE gene polymorphism and the frequency of coronary artery aneurysm associated with Kawasaki disease, although our results do support a role for the I/D and G235OA polymorphism of the ACE gene in determining the risk of Kawasaki disease in the population of Taiwan. Different metallurgical processing, including the standard heat treatment, neat treatment without β aging, addition of high amount of Cr, and long-term isothermal exposure, was conducted on superalloy Inconel 783. For these processed materials, the tensile property and hardness at room temperature and stress relaxation behavior at 650°C were examined. The testing results showed that isothermal exposure and heat treatment without β aging slightly enhanced the yield strength of alloy 783 at room temperature as well as all metallurgical processing in this study produced an identical stress relaxation behavior at 650 °C. Experiments were performed to determine the effect of Aspergillus oryzae (AO) fermentation extract on zoospore development in the rumen fungus Neocallimastix frontalis EB 188. Powdered product, or liquid extract prepared from such powder, was added at the recommended value for supplementation in dairy cattle. Stationary and stirred cultures were periodically sampled and assayed for extracellular and intracellular protein and enzymes, gas production, zoospore production and maturation, and carbon source utilization. Soluble extract increased fungal physiology when grown in stirred vessels or stationary cultures. Treated cultures produced higher levels of enzymes (nearly double). Mobile zoospores matured into germination entities more rapidly in treated cultures, and when powdered product was used, nearly 3 times more motile zoospores were produced at 56 h of fungal growth. Levels of the intracellular enzyme malate dehydrogenase increased by 6-fold in the presence of powdered product. Product wheat bran carrier used as soluble extract or powder had very little effect on fungal cultures. This article presents information related to river sediments collected from various sites used to investigate the effects of factors such as various reducing conditions, the presence of other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the addition of electron donors or acceptors on phenanthrene degradation under nitrate-reducing conditions. Results showed that phenanthrene was completely degraded by day 56 in K8 and remained 43.2% in K10 sediment-containing samples. In comparison, phenanthrene was completely degraded by day 30 in K8 and remained 3 2.0% in K10 sediment-free culture samples a significantly faster rate.

In this study, local sewage sludge was acclimated to establish H2-producing enrichment cultures, which were used to convert sucrose to H2 with continuously stirred anaerobic bioreactors. The steady-state behaviors of cell growth, substrate utilization, and product formation were closely monitored. Kinetic models were developed to describe and predict the experimental results from the H2-producing cultures. Operation at dilution rates (D) of 0.075–0.167 h–1 was preferable for H2 production, resulting in a H2 concentration of nearly 0.02 mol/l. The optimal hydrogen production rate was 0.105 mol/h occurring at D=0.125 h–1. The major volatile fatty acid produced was butyric acid (HBu), while acetic acid and propionic acid were also produced in lesser quantities. The major solvent product was ethanol, whose concentration was only 15% of that of HBu, indicating that the metabolic flow favors H2 production. The proposed model was able to interpret the trends of the experimental data. The maximum specific growth rate (µmax), Monod constant (Ks), and yield coefficient for cell growth (Yx/s) were estimated as 0.172 h–1, 68 mg COD/l, and 0.1 g/g, respectively. This study provides a novel attempt to put forward, in general terms and explanations, the toxicological threshold for Hg(II) detoxification. Quantitative analysis of mercuric ion toxicity to a mercury-resistant strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa PU21 and identification of the threshold phenomena are included. It is revealed that rate of cellular viability loss depends upon the ratio of Hg2+ concentration to cell population, (or “multiplicity of toxicity”– MOT). The threshold of unacclimated cells (or “non-growth cells” PU21u) and hyperresistant strain (PU21r) occurs at MOT of 1.6×1010∼3.2×1010 and 1.7×1011∼3.4×1011 molecules Hg2+/cfu, respectively. The threshold of PU21r increase approx. 10-fold compared with unacclimated resistant strain PU21u. This indicated that sequential treatment of culture with selection pressures (i.e. mercury-containing media) led to over 10-fold increase in mercury resistance. Thus, this quantitative evaluation of toxicity threshold among resistant populations can be used as a design criterion for long-term Hg2+ detoxification bioprocesses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cost-effective induction of bacteriophage λQ− in Escherichia coli on reporter-protein production is presented. Long-duration temperature induction increases the mortality of bacterial hosts and decreases the productivity efficiency; however, sufficient time span of induction is essential to overcome the induction threshold. Thus, the optimal duration for cost-effective induction is approximately 30 min, since the benefit of induction longer than 30 min is unlikely to pay off the expense of significant host viability loss. An 8.5-month-old male infant with Kawasaki disease (KD) received high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy on the fifth day after fever onset. However, multiple peripheral limb ischemias occurred 2 days later. Accordingly, heparin followed by dipyridamole was administered. Aside from a small amputation at the tip of the right middle finger, all other digital ischemias resolved. Abstract. We obtained the energy-dependent ion yields of two-photon-resonant and three-photon-ionization processes in the dense ytterbium atomic gases. This dependence could be analyzed by using the rate equation in the low incident light energy region. Aspergillus oryzae fermentation extract (Amaferm) was used to stimulate the in vitro growth of the cellulolytic fungus Neocallimastix frontalis EB 188. Soluble and filter-sterilized extract was added either at the start or throughout culture growth. Culture mass, protein secretion and cellulase secretion were measured in stationary test-tubes or round-bottom flasks and a stirred (desktop) fermenter. The soluble extract increased culture mass and protein and cellulase secretion in a dose-dependent manner. Maximum stimulation caused the supernatant cellulase to nearly double (i.e., 87% over controls; P<0.05), cell mass increased by 27% ( P<0.05) over controls and secreted protein increased 37% ( P<0.05) over controls. The timing of extract addition did not alter the culture response and suggested a recycling of components. The robustness of fungal zoospores used as inoculum, however, greatly influenced the effectiveness of the extract to stimulate secretions. Extracts did not directly influence the pH of the culture medium or the endogenous levels of enzymes. The rate of carbon source utilization and morphology of the fungus were unchanged by soluble-extract additions at any level tested. Three fungi Neocallimastix frontalis EB 188, Piromyces communis DC 193 and Orpinomyces ssp. RW 206, representing the predominant cultures isolated from cattle, were shown to respond to the addition of Aspergillus oryzae fermentation extract (i.e., Amaferm; BioZyme Inc., St. Joseph, Mo.) stimulation. Growth rates, protein and cellulase secretion and fungal mass production were all accelerated in the presence of the extract. Analysis of volatile fatty acids produced by these three species suggested that extract addition increased and altered gas production. Fractionation and preliminary analysis of the components present in the soluble extract, which stimulated the growth of the cellulolytic fungus N. frontalis EB 188, were also attempted. Soluble and filtered, sterilized extract was treated prior to use as a stimulant. Pretreatments included dialysis, ultraviolet irradiation, freeze thaw cycling, boiling, autoclaving, digestion with protease, autodigestion, organic extraction, decolorizing-carbon binding and polyethylene glycol concentration. Boiling, protease treatment, organic extraction, freeze thaw cycling and decolorizing-carbon binding reduced the ability of the extract to stimulate fungal cultures. Gel electrophoresis methods demonstrated that protein- and cellulasesecretion profiles were not identical in control and stimulated cultures. High-performance liquid chromatography methods allowed the separation of the extract into a limited number of ultraviolet-absorbing peaks, of which several stimulated the physiology of the fungus. Cardiac complications caused by iron deposition are major causes of death in patients with β-thalassemia major. Deferiprone (L1) was found to have greater efficacy at depleting myocardial iron than desferrioxamine (DFX). Furthermore, combined therapy with L1 and DFX produced an additive or synergistic iron chelating effect. We report the successful treatment of severe heart failure in two patients with β-thalassemia major with the combined therapy. Magnetic resonance images showed a marked recovery of signal intensity in the heart, indicating a significant reduction of iron load in the heart. No significant adverse effects were noted. Therefore, combined therapy with L1 and DFX should be considered in patients with β-thalassemia major and cardiac complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
