Advances in skin tissue engineering have promoted the development of artificial skin substitutes to treat large burns and other major skin loss conditions. However, one of the main drawbacks to bioengineered skin is the need to obtain a large amount of viable epithelial cells in short periods of time, making the skin biofabrication process challenging and slow. Enhancing skin epithelial cell cultures by using mesenchymal stem cells secretome can favor the scalability of manufacturing processes for bioengineered skin. The effects of three different types of secretome derived from human mesenchymal stem cells, e.g. hADSC-s (adipose cells), hDPSC-s (dental pulp) and hWJSC-s (umbilical cord), were evaluated on cultured skin epithelial cells during 24, 48, 72 and 120 h to determine the potential of this product to enhance cell proliferation and improve biofabrication strategies for tissue engineering. Then, secretomes were applied in vivo in preliminary analyses carried out on Wistar rats. Results showed that the use of secretomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells enhanced currently available cell culture protocols. Secretome was associated with increased viability, proliferation and migration of human skin epithelial cells, with hDPSC-s and hWJSC-s yielding greater inductive effects than hADSC-s. Animals treated with hWJSC-s and especially, hDPSC-s tended to show enhanced wound healing in vivo with no detectable side effects. Aim: Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) are essential tools in radiation oncology. In Spain, the use of these techniques continues to grow as older linear accelerators (linacs) are replaced with modern equipment. However, little is known about inter-centre variability in prescription and dose heterogeneity limits. Consequently, the SBRT-Spanish Task Group (SBRT-SG) of the Spanish Society of Radiation Oncology (SEOR) has undertaken an initiative to assess prescription and homogeneity in SRS/SBRT treatment. In the present study, we surveyed radiation oncology (RO) departments to obtain a realistic overview of prescription methods used for SBRT and SRS treatment in Spain. Methods: A brief survey was developed and sent to 34 RO departments in Spain, mostly those who are members of the SEOR SBRT-SG. The survey contained seven questions about the specific prescription mode, dose distribution heterogeneity limits, prescription strategies according to SRS/SBRT type, and the use of IMRT–VMAT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy–Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy). Results: Responses were received from 29 centres. Most centres (59%) used the prescription criteria D95% ≥ 100%. Accepted dose heterogeneity was wide, ranging from 107 to 200%. Most centres used IMRT–VMAT (93%). Conclusions: This survey about SRS/SBRT prescription and dose heterogeneity has evidenced substantial inter-centre variability in prescription criteria, particularly for intended and accepted dose heterogeneity. These differences could potentially influence the mean planning target volume dose and its correlation with treatment outcomes. Today, patient management generally requires a multidisciplinary approach. However, due to the growing knowledge base and increasing complexity of Medicine, clinical practice has become even more specialised. Radiation oncology is not immune to this trend towards subspecialisation, which is particularly evident in ablative radiotherapy techniques that require high dose fractions, such as stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). The aim of the present report is to establish the position of the Spanish Society of Radiation Oncology (SEOR), in collaboration with the Spanish Society of Medical Physics (SEFM), with regard to the roles and responsibilities of healthcare professionals involved in performing SRS and SBRT. The need for this white paper is motivated due to the recent changes in Spanish Legislation (Royal Decree [RD] 601/2019, October 18, 2019) governing the use and optimization of radiotherapy and radiological protection for medical exposure to ionizing radiation (article 11, points 4 and 5) [1 ], which states: "In radiotherapy treatment units, the specialist in Radiation Oncology will be responsible for determining the correct treatment indication, selecting target volumes, determining the clinical radiation parameters for each volume, directing and supervising treatment, preparing the final clinical report, reporting treatment outcomes, and monitoring the patient's clinical course." Consequently, the SEOR and SEFM have jointly prepared the present document to establish the roles and responsibilities for the specialists—radiation oncologists (RO), medical physicists (MP), and related staff —involved in treatments with ionizing radiation. We believe that it is important to clearly establish the responsibilities of each professional group and to clearly establish the professional competencies at each stage of the radiotherapy process. The mass dimension one spinor is a candidate to explain the dark matter content in our universe. This field is an eingenspinor of charge conjugation operator and has a peculiar mass dimension, which restricts its renormalizable interactions with the particles. As a dark matter candidate, its generic signature to be searched for in particle colliders is characterized by missing energy events,. In this work, we consider phenomenological aspects of a tree level mass dimension one spinor interactions based in Elko phenomenology and providing directions to its implementation to the new formulation of mass dimension one spinors in a pedestrian approach given the basics of a Monte Carlo simulation and recasting analysis, in order to explore possible to detect this kind of particle in nowadays colliders. Harnessing the patient's own immune system against an established cancer has proven to be a successful strategy. Within the last years, several antibodies blocking critical "checkpoints" that control the activation of T cells, the immune cells able to kill cancer cells, have been approved for the use in patients with different tumours. Unfortunately, these cases remain a minority. Over the last years, radiotherapy has been reported as a means to turn a patient's own tumour into an in situ vaccine and generate anti-tumour T cells in patients who lack sufficient anti-tumour immunity. Indeed, review data show that the strategy of blocking multiple selected immune inhibitory targets in combination with radiotherapy has the potential to unleash powerful anti-tumour responses and improve the outcome of metastatic solid tumours. The structure of the human skin is directly dependent on its location and the mechanical forces to which it is subjected. In the present work, we have performed a comprehensive analysis of the human ridged and non-ridged skin to identify the differences and similarities between both skin types. For this purpose, human skin samples were obtained from dorsal hand skin (DHS), palmar hand skin (PHS), dorsal foot skin (DFS) and plantar foot skin (PFS) from the same cadaveric donors. Histological, histochemical and semiquantitative and quantitative immunohistochemical analyses were carried out to evaluate the epidermis, dermis and basement membrane. Results show that the epithelial layer of ridged skin had larger cell number and size than non-ridged skin for most strata. Melanocytes and Langerhans cells were more abundant in non-ridged skin, whereas Merkel cells were preferentially found in ridged skin. The expression pattern of CK5/6 was slightly differed between non-ridged and ridged skin. Involucrin expression was slightly more intense in non-ridged skin than in ridged skin. Collagen was more abundant in foot skin dermis than in hand skin, and in ridged skin as compared to non-ridged skin. Elastic fibers were more abundant in DHS. Biglycan was more abundant in foot skin than in hand skin. No differences were found for blood and lymphatic vessels. The basement membrane laminin was preferentially found in foot skin. These results revealed important differences at the epithelial, dermal and basement membrane levels that could contribute to a better knowledge of the human skin histology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microtissues (MT) are currently considered as a promising alternative for the fabrication of natural, 3D biomimetic functional units for the construction of bio-artificial substitutes by tissue engineering (TE). The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of generating mesenchymal cell-based MT using human umbilical cord Wharton’s jelly stromal cells (WJSC-MT). MT were generated using agarose microchips and evaluated ex vivo during 28 days. Fibroblasts MT (FIB-MT) were used as control. Morphometry, cell viability and metabolism, MT-formation process and ECM synthesis were assessed by phase-contrast microscopy, functional biochemical assays, and histological analyses. Morphometry revealed a time-course compaction process in both MT, but WJSC-MT resulted to be larger than FIB-MT in all days analyzed. Cell viability and functionality evaluation demonstrated that both MT were composed by viable and metabolically active cells, especially the WJSC during 4-21 days ex vivo. Histology showed that WJSC acquired a peripheral pattern and synthesized an extracellular matrix-rich core over the time, what differed from the homogeneous pattern observed in FIB-MT. This study demonstrates the possibility of using WJSC to create MT containing viable and functional cells and abundant extracellular matrix. We hypothesize that WJSC-MT could be a promising alternative in TE protocols. Dopamine (DA) has been long implicated with the processes of memory. In long-term memory, the hippocampus and ventral tegmental area (VTA) use DA to enhance long-term potentiation, while prefrontal DA D1 receptors are involved in working memory. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of specific brain areas have been shown to affect memory impairments in animal models. Here, we tested the hypothesis that DBS could reverse memory impairments by increasing the number of dopaminergic cells in the VTA. Rats received DBS at the level of the mammillothalamic tract, the anterior nucleus of the thalamus, and entorhinal cortex before euthanasia. These regions are part of the so-called memory circuit. Brain sections were processed for c-Fos and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunocytochemistry in the VTA and the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). c-Fos, TH and c-Fos/TH immunoreactive cells were analyzed by means of stereology and confocal microscopy. Our results showed that DBS of the anterior nucleus of the thalamus induced substantial higher numbers of TH-immunoreactive cells in the VTA, while there were no significant differences between the experimental groups in the number of TH immunoreactive cells in the SNc, c-Fos immunoreactive cells and c-Fos/TH double-labeled cells in both the SNc and VTA. Our findings suggest a phenotypic switch, or neurotransmitter respecification, of DAergic cells specifically in the VTA which may be induced by DBS in the anterior nucleus of the thalamus. Background: Molecular imaging using positron emission tomography/computerized tomography (PET/CT) may add relevant incremental diagnostic information to standard structural cross-sectional imaging. Such information may allow identification of patients with rectal cancer that are more likely to develop complete tumor regression after neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy (CRT). The objective of this report was to identify PET/CT features that are associated with a complete response after CRT. Methods: 99 cT2-4N0-2M0 distal rectal cancer patients (≤7 cm from anal verge) were included in this prospective single center trial (NCT 00254683). Patients underwent baseline PET/CT followed by 54 Gy and 5-fluorouracil-based neoadjuvant CRT. After completion of therapy, patients underwent 6- and 12-week PET/CT. Clinical assessment of tumor response was performed at 12 weeks and was blinded to radiological information. Patients were treated according to clinical assessment. Results: There were seven patients with a complete pathological response (pCR) and 16 with a complete clinical response (cCR) (23 complete responders). Comparison of pCR exclusively and non-pCR revealed that only baseline primary tumor standard uptake value (SUV) was a significant predictor of response. Comparison of complete responders (pCR or cCR) and non-complete responders showed that depth of rectal wall uptake at baseline PET/CT ( p = 0.002) and variation between baseline and 12-week maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax) of primary tumor ( p = 0.001) were independent predictors for complete response at multivariate analysis. A decrease >67 % between baseline and 6-week or 76 % between baseline and 12-week SUVmax were associated with complete response (pCR or cCR; p = 0.02 and p < 0.001, respectively). Conclusions: Positron emission tomography/computerized tomography at baseline, 6 and 12 weeks, may provide information regarding patients with a higher likelihood of developing complete tumor regression following neoadjuvant CRT. Water is an essential element for living organisms, such that various responses have evolved to withstand water deficit in all living species. The study of these responses in plants has had particular relevance given the negative impact of water scarcity on agriculture. Among the molecules highly associated with plant responses to water limitation are the so-called late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins. These proteins are ubiquitous in the plant kingdom and accumulate during the late phase of embryogenesis and in vegetative tissues in response to water deficit. To know about the evolution of these proteins, we have studied the distribution of group 1 LEA proteins, a set that has also been found beyond the plant kingdom, in Bacillus subtilis and Artemia franciscana. Here, we report the presence of group 1 LEA proteins in green algae ( Chlorophyita and Streptophyta), suggesting that these group of proteins emerged before plant land colonization. By sequence analysis of public genomic databases, we also show that 34 prokaryote genomes encode group 1 LEA-like proteins; two of them belong to Archaea domain and 32 to bacterial phyla. Most of these microbes live in soil-associated habitats suggesting horizontal transfer from plants to bacteria; however, our phylogenetic analysis points to convergent evolution. Furthermore, we present data showing that bacterial group 1 LEA proteins are able to prevent enzyme inactivation upon freeze-thaw treatments in vitro, suggesting that they have analogous functions to plant LEA proteins. Recent works have shown a dual side of estrogens, and research on the relationship between oxidative stress and menopausal status remains unclear and has produced controversial results. In this work, we aimed to evaluate by sensitive methods the oxidant and antioxidant changes that develop after natural menopause. Thirty premenopausal and 28 naturally postmenopausal women volunteered for this study. Blood was collected and plasma used. 17-OH estradiol levels in plasma were estimated. Plasma levels of advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), lipid peroxidation products (such as hydroperoxides and malondialdehyde (MDA)), and nitrites were measured, and total radical antioxidant parameter testing was performed to determine the oxidant and antioxidant profiles, respectively. Estrogen levels were significantly increased ( p < 0.02) in premenopausal women (54.28 ± 9.34 pg/mL) as compared with postmenopausal women (18.10 ± 1.49 pg/mL). Postmenopausal women had lower levels of lipid hydroperoxide oxidation ( p < 0.0001), lipid hydroperoxide levels evaluated by the area under the curve (AUC; 1,366,000 ± 179,400 AUC; p < 0.01), and hydroperoxides as measured by the ferrous oxidation-xylenol orange method (31.48 ± 2.7 μM; p < 0.0001). The MDA levels did not differ between pre- and postmenopausal women whether measured by thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances or high-performance liquid chromatography assays. No differences in AOPP and nitrite levels were observed between pre- and postmenopausal women. Postmenopausal women also exhibited a higher total radical antioxidant level (0.89 ± 0.08 μM Trolox; p < 0.0001). Breast cancer consists in a chronic inflammatory disease with multiple biological and clinical behaviors. Based on high throughput technologies data, this disease is currently classified according to the molecular expression of estrogen (ER), progesterone (PR) and human epidermal growth factor (HER-2) receptors. In this study, we defined the inflammatory profile of the main molecular subtypes of breast cancer patients: luminal (ER and PR positive, HER-2 negative), HER-2 enriched (HER-2 positive) and triple negative (ER, PR and HER-2 negative). Cytokines panel was assessed by measurement of TNF-α, TGF-β, IL-1, IL-10 and IL-12 plasmatic levels. Oxidative profile was assessed by determination of lipid peroxidation, total antioxidant capacity of plasma, malondialdehyde levels, carbonyl content and nitric oxide (NO). Clinical data were correlated with inflammatory findings. Our findings demonstrated that patients bearing the luminal subtype displayed high TNF-α, TGF-β and enhanced oxidative stress levels associated with reduced IL-12. HER-2-enriched group exhibited higher levels of TNF-α, IL-12 and TGF-β associated with enhanced oxidative stress. Triple-negative subtype exhibited the most aggressive profile of disease behavior, with reduction in both TNF-α and TGF-β, with high levels of lipid peroxidation and NO. The clinical importance of our findings lies in the fact that the inflammatory status varies in distinct ways due to molecular subtype of breast cancer, opening potential therapeutic targets to future therapies. Breast cancer is the malignant neoplasia with the highest incidence in women worldwide. Chronic oxidative stress and inflammation have been indicated as major mediators during carcinogenesis and cancer progression. Human studies have not considered the complexity of tumor biology during the stages of cancer advance, limiting their clinical application. The purpose of this study was to characterize systemic oxidative stress and immune response parameters in early (ED; TNM I and II) and advanced disease (AD; TNM III and IV) of patients diagnosed with infiltrative ductal carcinoma breast cancer. Oxidative stress parameters were evaluated by plasmatic lipoperoxidation, carbonyl content, thiobarbituric reactive substances (TBARS), nitric oxide levels (NO), total radical antioxidant parameter (TRAP), superoxide dismutase, and catalase activities and GSH levels. Immune evaluation was determined by TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-12, and IL-10 levels and leukocytes oxidative burst evaluation by chemiluminescence. Tissue damage analysis included heart (total CK and CKMB), liver (AST, ALT, GGT), and renal (creatinine, urea, and uric acid) plasmatic markers. C-reactive protein (CRP) and iron metabolism were also evaluated. Analysis of the results verified different oxidative stress statuses occur at distinct cancer stages. ED was characterized by reduction in catalase, 8-isoprostanes, and GSH levels, with enhanced lipid peroxidation and TBARS levels. AD exhibited more pronounced oxidative status, with reduction in catalase activity and TRAP, intense lipid peroxidation and high levels of NO, TBARs, and carbonyl content. ED patients presented a Th2 immune pattern, while AD exhibited Th1 status. CRP levels and ferritin were increased in both stages of disease. Leukocytes burst impairment was observed in both the groups. Plasma iron levels were significantly elevated in AD. The data obtained indicated that oxidative stress enhancement and immune response impairment may be necessary to ensure cancer progression to advanced stages and may result from both host and tumor inflammatory mediators. Several adverse effects of chemotherapy treatments have been described, and most of these effects are associated with direct interactions between blood cells and indirect effects generated during the oxidative metabolism of antineoplastic drugs. In this study we evaluated the oxidative systemic status and hematological profiles of breast cancer patients with advanced ductal infiltrative carcinoma treated with doxorubicin (DOX) or paclitaxel (PTX) within 1 h after chemotherapy. Blood analyses included evaluation of hemogram, pro-oxidative markers, and antioxidant status. The results showed that advanced breast cancer diseased (AD) patients without previous chemotherapy presented anemia and high oxidative stress status characterized by elevated levels of lipid peroxidation and nitric oxide, and reduced catalase activity when compared with controls. DOX-treated patients exhibited increased anemia and reduced antioxidant status, which was revealed by decreases in reduced glutathione levels and the total antioxidant capacity of plasma; however, these changes did not lead to further increases in lipid peroxidation or carbonyl proteins when compared with the AD group. PTX-treated patients also showed increased anemia, lactate dehydrogenase leakage, and enhanced lipid peroxidation. These data reveal for the first time that patients subjected to chemotherapy with DOX or PTX present immediate systemic oxidative stress and red blood cell oxidative injury with anemia development. These findings provide a new perspective on the systemic redox state of AD and patients subjected to chemotherapy regarding oxidative stress enhancement and its possible involvement in the aggravation of chronic anemia. Antineoplastic chemotherapy still consists in the major first-line therapeutics against cancer. Several reports have described the immunomodulatory effects of these drugs based on in vitro treatment, but no previous data are known about these effects in patients and its association with immunological-mediated toxicity. In this study, we first characterize the immunological profile of advanced breast cancer patients treated with doxorubicin and paclitaxel protocols, immediately after chemotherapy infusion. Our findings included an immediate plasmatic reduction in IL-1, IL-10, and TNF-α levels in doxorubicin-treated patients, as well as high levels of IL-10 in paclitaxel patients. Further, it was demonstrated that both drugs led to leukocytes oxidative burst impairment. In vitro analysis was performed exposing healthy blood to both chemotherapics in the same concentration and time of exposition of patients, resulting in low IL-10 and high IL-1β in doxorubicin exposition, as low TNF-α and high IL-1 in paclitaxel treatment. Nitric oxide levels were not altered in both in vivo and in vitro treatments. In conclusion, our data revealed for the first time that the immediate effects of chemotherapy could be mediated by cytokines signaling in patients and that the results observed in patients could be a resultant of host immune cells activation. In this work we present a new approach to obtaining the subband structures of arbitrary-shape cross-section quantum wires. The method can be implemented for a general band structure, thus making it possible to introduce the anisotropic and non-parabolic features of the band into the analysis. Finally we compare the results obtained using anisotropic and non-parabolic band models with isotropic and parabolic ones in a triangular cross-section Si quantum wire with several crystalline orientations. In this work we present an investigation on the subband structure of a Si quantum wire, and how it is influenced by the non-parabolicity of the bulk bands. We devise a hybrid approach for solving linear systems arising from interior point methods applied to linear programming problems. These systems are solved by preconditioned conjugate gradient method that works in two phases. During phase I it uses a kind of incomplete Cholesky preconditioner such that fill-in can be controlled in terms of available memory. As the optimal solution of the problem is approached, the linear systems becomes highly ill-conditioned and the method changes to phase II. In this phase a preconditioner based on the LU factorization is found to work better near a solution of the LP problem. The numerical experiments reveal that the iterative hybrid approach works better than Cholesky factorization on some classes of large-scale problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anatoxin-a (AnTx) is a natural neurotoxin, which acts as a potent and stereoselective agonist at the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. The in vivo actions of the AnTx on dopamine (DA) release are scarcely characterized. The aim of this study was to determine the neurochemical bases for AnTx-induced striatal DA release, using the brain microdialysis technique, in freely moving rats. Local application of AnTx (3.5 mM) through the microdialysis probe produced an increase in striatal DA levels (701 ± 51% with respect to basal values). The effect of infusion of AnTx in Ca2+-free Ringer medium, in Na+-free Ringer medium and with TTX in the medium, was inhibited. Also, reserpine pre-treatment blocked the action of AnTx on striatal DA levels. To investigate the involvement of the DA transporter, the effects of AnTx were observed in the presence of nomifensine. The coadministration of AnTx and nomifensine evoked an additive effect on striatal DA levels. The latter results show that the DA release is not mediated by a decreased DA uptake. Taken as a whole, these results suggest that the effects of AnTx are predominantly mediated by an exocytotic mechanism, Ca2+-, Na+- and TTX-dependent, and not by a mechanism mediated by the DA transporter. In this study we analyzed the envelope functions obtained by solving the effective-mass Schrödinger equation including the non-parabolicity of the valence band in p-type FD-SOI devices. In order to carry out this task, we used two different algorithms to solve the effective-mass Schrödinger equation in barriers, and calculated the envelope functions and eigenenergies yielded by these methods for several states along the subbands. This study enabled us to propose a method for selecting the most appropriate envelope functions for each subband. Finally, we quantified the differences in phonon and interface-roughness scattering rates resulting from using the envelope function proposed rather than that obtained by simpler approaches in barriers. A method of extraction of proteins from cowpea for two-dimensional electrophoresis is presented. This method avoids loss of protein in the course of sample preparation and results in a fraction that yields reproducible 2-DE protein patterns. The efficiency of this method was demonstrated by comparison of the patterns of protein deposition in developing and mature cowpea seeds. It is also demonstrated that without further processing of the gel piece the proteins present in the spots can be directly digested with trypsin and the peptides subjected to mass spectrometry analysis for identification. The present work proposes an efficient technique for calculating the final state of holes after an ionized impurity scattering when the main features of the valence bands in Si and Ge, such as anisotropy, non-parabolicity and degeneracy, are taken into consideration. With this in mind we investigated the ionized impurity scattering within the Brooks-Herrings formalism and within the framework of effective mass theory, using a simplified model for the valence band. The brain microdialysis technique has been used to examine the in vivo effects of the neurotoxin domoic acid (an ionotropic glutamate receptor agonist) on dopamine (DA) release in the striatum of conscious and freely moving rats. Local application of domoic acid (500 μM) through the microdialysis probe produced an increase in striatal DA content (597 ± 96% with respect to basal levels). The release of DA induced by domoic acid was not attenuated in a Ca[sup+2]-free medium (469 ± 59%) or after pretreatment with 10 mg/kg reserpine (533 ± 79%). Intrastriatal infusion of 1μM tetrodotoxin (TTX) partially reduced the domoic acid-evoked DA release (278 ± 34%). Moreover, domoic acid perfusion had no effect on K[sup+]-evoked DA release. The results suggest that domoic acid increases the striatal DA release according to a reserpine-independent, calcium-independent and partially TTX-insensitive mechanism, suggesting that these effects probably involve a nonex-ocytotic process. On the other hand, the inhibitor of DA uptake nomifensine (10 μM) reduced the domoic acid-evoked DA release (356 ± 59%), suggesting that a carrier-dependent mechanism could be involved in the effect of domoic acid on the striatal DA levels. A severely neutropenic patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia developed a diffuse bilateral pulmonary infection while receiving a therapeutic daily dosage of intravenous amphotericin B for Candida glabrata esophagitis. Computed tomography of the chest showed numerous lung nodules, ground glass areas and a pleural effusion. Biopsy of one nodule demonstrated hyaline septate hyphae. Multiple sputum cultures grew Acremonium strictum. Increasing the dose of amphotericin B and the addition of itraconazole did not resolve the infection. Change of treatment to posaconazole given orally at 200 mg four times/d resulted in progressive improvement leading finally to cure after 24 weeks of therapy. The authors describe, in a female with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treated by methotrexate (MTX), the occurence during walking of a left femoral shaft fracture. This middle third femoral fracture needed early intramedullary locked nailing and was due to a malignant B follicular large cell lymphoma. Despite CHOP chemotherapy and remedial treatment (mitoxanthrone-holoxan-VP16), bone lymphoma spread and death occurred within six months. Our case (the 25th published) poses problems: what part, in RA, does MTX play in the occurrence of non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphoma (NHML)? There is debate about the role of MTX because NHML is frequent in RA. However, cases of regressive NHML after MTX therapy cessation are disturbing. Possibly, MTX facilitates proliferation of B lymphocytes infected by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) whereas EBV is present in both lymphoma cells and in usual RA.
