Background: Self-reporting of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children is not always feasible. To date, proxy perspectives (Proxy versions 1 and 2) using the EQ-5D-Y-3L have not been explored for its impact on agreement with child self-report. Proxy version 1 requires the proxy to consider their own view of the child's HRQoL (proxy-proxy), while with Proxy version 2, the proxy is asked to respond as they believe their child would self-report their HRQoL (proxy-child). This study compared the inter-rater and intra-proxy agreement (overall and dimension level) using the EQ-5D-Y-3L self, proxy-proxy, and proxy-child reports. Methods: A community-based sample of child (aged 6–12 years) and parent dyads were invited to participate in a semi-structured interview. The child self-completed the EQ-5D-Y-3L independently of the parent who completed the EQ-5D-Y-3L from proxy-proxy and proxy-child perspectives. Agreement was determined using Concordance Correlation Coefficients (CCCs) for the overall (preference-weighted) HRQoL, while agreement at the dimension level was evaluated using Gwet's agreement coefficient (AC1). To assess the differences between the self and the two proxy reports, the Wilcoxon matched-pair signed-rank test was used. Results: This study involved 85 child-parent dyads. The agreement between self and proxy overall HRQoL was low (fair) with both proxy-proxy (CCC = 0.28) and proxy-child (CCC = 0.26) reports. The largest discrepancy in the child-proxy agreement at dimension level with both the proxy versions was observed for 'feeling worried, sad or unhappy'. Within this dimension, the proxy-child perspective resulted in a stronger agreement (AC1 = 0.7, good) with child self-report compared with the traditional proxy-proxy perspective (AC1 = 0.58, moderate). Although the preference-weighted HRQoL was consistent across both the proxy perspectives, a significant difference was observed in the EQ VAS scores (p = 0.02). Conclusions: This study demonstrates that choice of proxy perspective may have an impact on the problems reported on HRQoL dimensions and EQ VAS scores. However, in this community-based sample of generally healthy children, no significant difference was observed in the inter-rater agreement for child-self and proxy preference-weighted EQ-5D-Y-3L values based on proxy perspectives. While this suggests that preference-weighted data are not sensitive to the choice of perspective, these findings may differ for different HRQoL instruments and for alternative value sets with different properties. Introduction: Home visiting programs provide support services to families and their children to promote positive health outcomes. This study sought to describe strategies employed by home visiting programs during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic to address the community resource and social service needs of home visiting clients in Georgia. Methods: We conducted a mixed methods study between December 2020 and April 2021 using online surveys and key informant interviews of home visiting staff and clients from 21 program sites. Structured content analysis was conducted of the triangulated data to elicit thematic findings. Results: Due to the pandemic-induced economic conditions, clients expressed increased demand for housing, employment, and childcare support services. Staff experienced challenges with client referrals to these services because of interruptions in social service availability and transitions to virtual services. In response to these challenges, home visiting programs strengthened existing community partnerships and created new collaborations with local agencies to fill any gaps in services. Discussion: Home visiting programs in Georgia provided critical linkages to community resources for families during the early phase of the pandemic. Preserving this essential home visiting service in future national emergencies will require improved coordination of community resources and social services. Significance: Home visiting programs have long demonstrated positive outcomes and benefits to families across the United States. The connection to resources has been described as an important component of home visiting services. Home visiting staff were successful in addressing the increased resource needs of clients during the COVID-19 pandemic. They were successful because of the variety of strategies they implemented such as collaborations with service providers and local agencies. Objective: Referral to social and health services is a core process of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). We evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a referral innovation implemented at two New York City WIC sites. This program aimed to improve retention by increasing WIC's perceived value by addressing unmet needs of WIC families. The two main components were needs assessment via conversation and a closed-loop referral process for WIC families with children aged 6–9 months and 18–21 months. Design: Referral outcomes from Unite Us and program data were tracked and assessed using descriptive univariate analyses. We conducted 29 in-depth interviews with caregivers and six focus groups with WIC and CBO staff. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic framework analysis. Results: From February 2020 through January 2021, 1,675 WIC caregivers participated in a conversation about their family's needs. Four hundred sixty-one caregivers were referred to at least one service. 95 received services or benefits. In interviews, caregivers viewed referrals to other services positively but were not aware WIC could address needs holistically. In focus groups, WIC staff liked the conversation script but highlighted barriers to making referrals. CBO partners valued network participation as it increased their reach to new families. Conclusions and Implications: Our approach facilitated targeted referrals for WIC participants. It is an acceptable enhancement of the WIC referral process with potential to strengthen WIC as a community provider. Purpose: Perinatal intimate partner violence (IPV) is a prevalent problem in Peru, but no evidence-based interventions have been developed to address the needs of Peruvian pregnant women exposed to IPV. The current qualitative study examined existing resources in Lima, Peru for IPV-exposed pregnant women, barriers to women's access to resources, and how to make a new intervention for these women accessible and responsive to their needs. Method: Using thematic analysis, the study analyzed qualitative focus groups data from healthcare providers (N = 11) and pregnant women (N = 14, 50% of whom had experienced perinatal IPV) in Lima. Results: Women used word of mouth from other women to determine which community resources were trustworthy. Obstacles to resource utilization included IPV-related barriers, emotional barriers, and lack of knowledge about, access to, and trust in community and legal resources. Participants discussed that future interventions for IPV-exposed pregnant women should provide information to bolster women's resilience across the lifespan, such as childhood education about safe sex and gender equality, and education in adulthood about safety planning for IPV, healthy relationships, and maternal health and infant care. To improve resource accessibility, participants described the importance of fostering trust among women and healthcare providers, providing childcare, transportation, and mental and physical health services at little to no cost. Conclusion: Study findings have important implications for mental health supports, women's access to information, and broader social efforts aimed at reducing perinatal IPV in Peru, especially the role of accessible community resources in fostering women's resilience. Single-cell RNA-seq data allow the quantification of cell type differences across a growing set of biological contexts. However, pinpointing a small subset of genomic features explaining this variability can be ill-defined and computationally intractable. Here we introduce MarkerMap, a generative model for selecting minimal gene sets which are maximally informative of cell type origin and enable whole transcriptome reconstruction. MarkerMap provides a scalable framework for both supervised marker selection, aimed at identifying specific cell type populations, and unsupervised marker selection, aimed at gene expression imputation and reconstruction. We benchmark MarkerMap's competitive performance against previously published approaches on real single cell gene expression data sets. MarkerMap is available as a pip installable package, as a community resource aimed at developing explainable machine learning techniques for enhancing interpretability in single-cell studies. China prioritizes ecological civilization construction and embraces the concept of "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets." Great achievements have been made in ecological protection and restoration through implementing a series of policies and projects. This paper reviews the history of ecological restoration in China and the current development of the "integrated protection and restoration project of mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes, grasslands, and deserts (IPRP)." Furthermore, the characteristics of IPRP were systematically elaborated from the perspectives of the ecological civilization thought, the policy management, and the key scientific issues. Also, the current achievements were summarized in the fields of national ecological space management, biodiversity conservation, and ecological protection and restoration. Existing challenges in management policy, scientific issues, and engineering practices were highlighted. Future perspectives include ecological space control, nature-based Solutions, biodiversity big data platform, modern techniques, and value realization mechanisms of ecological products. In the Global North, death is often treated as the departure of a person. However, across Africa, families and communities often include living and dead members, usually called "ancestors." In this article, we use archaeology to support educators in communicating key aspects of deathways and the study of ancestors in Africa. We do this through an example drawn from the ancient kingdom of Aksum in Ethiopia (50–800 CE). Archaeologist Dilpreet Singh Basanti previously analyzed human remains from Aksum and reconstructed an ancient community's burial and ongoing engagement with a young woman. Artist Naomi Mekonen has created a surrealist lens to present this woman's story of death in this article's figures. Surrealism is a rising perspective in modern art from the Tigray region and is used here to shift the tone from death as a grim tale of loss to death as a love story. We show how ongoing actions around the young woman's tomb relate to her continued role in her family and community. Our example illustrates that ancestors are elements of healthy community life. Ancestors provide a guiding voice that helps to define people's values and experiences of the world. In this way, ancestors are inseparable from "culture," and exploring these themes helps us to appreciate the role of culture as a guiding way that connects generations of loved ones, living and dead. Quantitative and qualitative characteristics of nutrition of some cohabiting rodent species in the High-Mountain Zone of the Republic of Dagestan have been studied. The diet of S. uralensis consisted of 23, C. gud, of 22, M. arvalis, of 27, C. migtatorius, of 26, and D. nitedula, of 19 plant species. The most diverse diet was found in the common vole and gray hamster. In spring, sedges dominated in the diets of rodents, in the summer, rations consisted mainly of cereals, and autumn, predominantly from the species of the forbs and legume groups. In all, except for the forest dormouse, the conjugation of diets with the structure of herbaceous vegetation was revealed. The maximum values of the degree of similarity of the diets of rodents were found in pairs of wood mouse – Gudaur vole, Gudaur vole – gray hamster, and common vole – gray hamster. As a result, a sufficient level of food supply, a wide range of microstations, and intrapopulation adaptation mechanisms make it possible for the considered rodent species to live together in the study area. The widespread availability of high spatial and temporal resolution public transit data is improving the measurement and analysis of public transit-based accessibility to crucial community resources such as jobs and health care. A common approach is leveraging transit route and schedule data published by transit agencies. However, this often results in accessibility overestimations due to endemic delays due to traffic and incidents in bus systems. Retrospective real-time accessibility measures calculated using real-time bus location data attempt to reduce overestimation by capturing the actual performance of the transit system. These measures also overestimate accessibility since they assume that riders had perfect information on systems operations as they occurred. In this paper, we introduce realizable real-time accessibility based on space–time prisms as a more conservative and realistic measure. We, moreover, define accessibility unreliability to measure overestimation of schedule-based and retrospective accessibility measures. Using high-resolution General Transit Feed Specification real-time data, we conduct a case study in the Central Ohio Transit Authority bus system in Columbus, Ohio, USA. Our results prove that realizable accessibility is the most conservative of the three accessibility measures. We also explore the spatial and temporal patterns in the unreliability of both traditional measures. These patterns are consistent with prior findings of the spatial and temporal patterns of bus delays and risk of missing transfers. Insect gut bacteria have a significant impact on host biology, which has a favorable or negative impact on insect fitness. The walnut leaf beetle (Gastrolina depressa) is a notorious pest in China, causing severe damage to Juglandaceae trees including Juglans regia and Pterocarya rhoifolia. To date, however, we know surprisingly little about the gut microbiota of G. depressa. This study used a high-throughput sequencing platform to investigate the gut bacterial community of G. depressa throughout its life cycle, including the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd instar larvae, as well as male, female, and pre-pregnant female adults. Our results showed that the diversity of the gut bacterial community in larvae was generally higher than that in adults, and young larvae (1st and 2nd larvae) possessed the most diversified and abundant community. Principal coordinate analysis results showed that the gut microbiota of adults cluster together, which is independent of the 1st and 2nd instar larvae. The main phyla were Proteobacteria and Firmicutes in the microbial community of G. depressa, while the dominant genera were Enterobacter, Rosenbergiella, Erwinia, Pseudomonas, and Lactococcus. The gut bacteria of G. depressa were mostly enriched in metabolic pathways (carbohydrate metabolism and amino acid metabolism) as revealed by functional prediction. This study contributes to a better knowledge of G. depressa's gut microbiota and its potential interactions with the host insect, facilitating the development of a microbial-based pest management strategy. SomaScan is a high-throughput, aptamer-based proteomics assay designed for the simultaneous measurement of thousands of proteins with a broad range of endogenous concentrations. In its most current version, the 7k SomaScan assay v4.1 is capable of measuring 7288 human proteins. In this work, we present an extensive technical assessment of this platform based on a study of 2050 samples across 22 plates. Included in the study design were inter-plate technical duplicates from 102 human subjects, which allowed us to characterize different normalization procedures, evaluate assay variability by multiple analytical approaches, present signal-over-background metrics, and discuss potential specificity issues. By providing detailed performance assessments on this wide range of technical aspects, we aim for this work to serve as a valuable resource for the growing community of SomaScan users. The varied and episodic nature of volcanic eruptions requires numerous and diverse observations for study and successful forecasting. Volcanological databases are important resources for the community because they enable investigation of questions that are not answerable by single datasets. Large-scale or synoptic studies are increasingly accessible through the use of machine learning applied to those often complex databases. In this paper, we describe the existing volcanological database landscape, the complexity of linking between various resources, the challenges of data standardization, and the challenges associated with long-term growth and sustainability of databases. Many challenges to database interoperability can be addressed through use of global unique identifiers and standardized data formats when populating databases and when publishing scientific studies. Quality of life is an individual evaluation of the objective conditions in which a person lives. Objective living conditions determine the potential quality of life, which through individual valorisation becomes the quality of life in the full sense. In this paper, we present a method for measuring potential quality of life with a synthetic index of relative concentration (SIRC) that we have developed starting from the logical basis of the Herfindahl index. The SIRC measures the impact on quality of life due to the unequal distribution of objective living conditions among members of the same community. It transforms the original data on the inequality of the distribution of objective living conditions, generating appropriate weights, into indicators of the concentration of potential quality of life. Based on the obtained SIRC values, the categorization and ranking of the potential quality of life for the analyzed subjects that make up the same community is performed. The practical application of SIRC in the research of potential quality of life for 48 municipalities of the Republic of Srpska based on 34 indicators that show objective living conditions in municipalities are presented. Increasing numbers of young Israelis annually leave the enclave of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. Relying on 16 in-depth interviews, we examine the effects of this disaffiliation on life trajectories and identity reconstruction of individuals who left their society of origin two decades ago. This unveiled a multistep longitudinal process, characterized by moving in and out of various structural stages, coupled with disaffiliates' agency to highlight specific sociocultural characteristics or the more universal nature of the human condition. The life course of disaffiliates begins with a phase of early struggle with the immediate tolls of disaffiliation, followed by a formative period marked by two steps: military service and acquisition of higher education. Here disaffiliates practice adoption of increasingly inclusive identities, in which the past and present are enmeshed. The formative period is followed by three alternative trajectories: (a) adherence to restrictive Israeli conformity, (b) ongoing search for singularity, and (c) integration of ultra-Orthodox heritage with contemporary Israeli realities. The disaffiliation trajectory from the ultra-Orthodox society is embedded in particular sociocultural, political, and historical contexts. However, narratives of disaffiliates adhere to frameworks of cultural Jewish-Israeli particularism, as much as to those of human universalism, plugging in to certain universal themes of the human condition, namely rigidity, fluidity, alterity, and inclusion. Understanding the composition of microorganismal communities hosted by insect pests is an important prerequisite for revealing their functions and developing new pest control strategies. Although studies of the structure of the microbiome of Nilaparvata lugens have been published, little is known about the dynamic changes in this microbiome across different developmental stages, and an understanding of the core microbiota is still lacking. In this study, we investigated the dynamic changes in bacteria and fungi in different developmental stages of N. lugens using high-throughput sequencing technology. We observed that the microbial diversity in eggs and mated adults was higher than that in nymphs and unmated adults. We also observed a notable strong correlation between fungal and bacterial α-diversity, which suggests that fungi and bacteria are closely linked and may perform functions collaboratively during the whole developmental period. Arsenophonus and Hirsutella were the predominant bacterial and fungal taxa, respectively. Bacteria were more conserved than fungi during the transmission of the microbiota between developmental stages. Compared with that in the nymph and unmated adult stages of N. lugens, the correlation between bacterial and fungal communities in the mated adult and egg stages was stronger. Moreover, the core microbiota across all developmental stages in N. lugens was identified, and there were more bacterial genera than fungal genera; notably, the core microbiota of eggs, nymphs, and mated and unmated adults showed distinctive functional enrichment. This study tested the usability of a non-stigmatizing community-based trauma intervention delivered by trained community members. The Community Resiliency Model (CRM) was taught to a high-crime, low-income community designated as a Mental Health Provider Shortage Area (19 MPSA score). Five groups of Latino, African-American, LGBTQ, Asian Pacific Islander, and Veteran participants (N-57) with a history of complex/cumulative traumas and untreated posttraumatic stress undertook a five-day 40-h CRM training with master trainers. Measures included Treatment Relevance, Use and Satisfaction (TRUSS), Brief CRM Questionnaire (Brief CRM), and Symptom Questionnaire (SQ). Participant preparedness to teach CRM to others was high (98%) and sustained at the 3–6 months follow-up with 93% reporting a daily use. Pre-to post comparison analyses showed a significant decrease in distress indicators and increase in wellbeing indicators. CRM's high usability holds promise for a broader, low cost and sustainable implementation in traumatized and under-resourced communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

"Eco-symbiotic complementarity" refers to mechanisms of reciprocal support among people settled in different ecological zones to access zone-specific useful products. We evaluated eco-symbiotic complementarity and how socio-spatial marginality influences the exchange of natural products between Nahua communities in the municipality of Coyomeapan and the nearest markets in the Sierra Negra of Puebla, Mexico. Through ethnobotanical interviews, we documented 191 useful morphospecies of plants and fungi, 136 of them sold in the municipal market. β diversity analyses showed that most traded morphospecies were specific to the predominant vegetation type of the study communities. We established that plants, including cultivated crops, exhibit complementarity patterns by commercialization, while fungi do not through an examination of exchange networks. Communities' degree of marginalization influences their traded products specialization and the scope of their trade routes. The diversity of ecosystems favors a complementarity network that persists through the municipal market and increases the availability of resources for people inhabiting them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mental health and addiction (MHA) related Emergency Department (ED) visits have increased significantly in recent years. Studies identified that a small subgroup of patients constitutes a disproportionally large number of visits. However, there is limited qualitative research exploring the phenomenon from the perspectives of patients who visited ED frequently for MHA reasons, and healthcare providers who provide care to the patients since the overwhelming majority of studies were quantitative based on clinical records. Without input from patients and healthcare providers, policymakers have inadequate information for designing and implementing programs. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature of qualitative research on frequent MHA related ED visits. The findings of the review revealed that a lack of community resources and existing community resources not meeting the needs of patients were critical contributing factors for frequent MHA related ED visits. The global burden of cancer falls heavily on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where there are critical gaps in the provision of supportive care services, which leaves many cancer patients in these settings feeling overwhelmed and unable to manage the psychological effects associated with a cancer diagnosis and the ensuing treatment. In addressing these gaps, we adapted a widely replicated cancer peer mentoring model in the USA to the Viet Nam context. Using the Cultural Adaptation Framework, we examined cultural characteristics affecting three key domains—cognitive information processing, affective-motivational, and environmental—to inform the types of adaptations that are made to the program. We highlight here the major findings in the three domains and the adaptations made. This illustration can inform future efforts to adapt successful programs to different cultural contexts, ensuring that cancer psychosocial programs and activities are acceptable and appropriate to the culture, health system, and resources of the local community and setting. To mitigate the negative impact of resource needs on child health, practices serving low-income immigrant families have implemented screening programs to connect families to community resources. Little is known about how duration of US residence relates to patterns of resource needs and indicators of acculturation such as community resource knowledge/experience or self-efficacy. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of a convenience sample of immigrant families with young children at an urban primary care clinic. These families were seen 5/2018–1/2020 for well child care, screening positive for ≥1 social need using a tool derived from Health Leads. Analysis of 114 families found that newly arrived families with a shorter duration of US residence (≤5 years) were more likely to report immediate material hardships like food insecurity and need for essential child supplies. Newly arrived families were also less likely to have access to technology resources such as a computer or smartphone. Long-term families with a longer duration of US residence (≥15 years) were more likely to report chronic needs like poor housing conditions, but also reported increased community resource knowledge/experience and increased self-efficacy. Primary care pediatric practices should assess immigration contextual factors to identify subgroups such as newly arrived families with young children to target resources (e.g., increase screening frequency) or enhance services (e.g., patient navigators) to relieve resource needs. Highlights: This was a study of immigrant families with young children at a federally qualified health center with a social resource screening program. Newly arrived immigrant families were more likely to report material hardships like food insecurity, essential child supplies, and technology needs (e.g., computer, smart phone). Given society's increased reliance on virtual services, screening tools should incorporate technology resources (e.g., computers, high speed internet). Intervention strategies should identify subgroups such as newly arrived families with young children to target resources (e.g., increase screening frequency) or enhance services (e.g., patient navigators) to relieve resource needs. The selection of peptides presented by MHC molecules is crucial for antigen discovery. Previously, several predictors have shown impressive performance on binding affinity. However, the decisive MHC residues and their relation to the selection of binding peptides are still unrevealed. Here, we connected HLA alleles with binding motifs via our deep learning-based framework, MHCfovea. MHCfovea expanded the knowledge of MHC-I-binding motifs from 150 to 13,008 alleles. After clustering N-terminal and C-terminal sub-motifs on both observed and unobserved alleles, MHCfovea calculated the hyper-motifs and the corresponding allele signatures on the important positions to disclose the relation between binding motifs and MHC-I sequences. MHCfovea delivered 32 pairs of hyper-motifs and allele signatures (HLA-A: 13, HLA-B: 12, and HLA-C: 7). The paired hyper-motifs and allele signatures disclosed the critical polymorphic residues that determine the binding preference, which are believed to be valuable for antigen discovery and vaccine design when allele specificity is concerned. Ko-Han Lee et al. develop MHCfovea, a machine-learning method for predicting peptide-binding by MHC molecules and inferring peptide motifs and MHC allele signatures. Introduction and hypothesis: Fourth-degree perineal tear occurs in up to 0.2% of vaginal deliveries. In limited resource communities, women often deliver in local villages without facilities to repair obstetric anal sphincter injuries. These fourth-degree tears heal by secondary intention and result in total perineal defects. The aim of the study is to present medium-term follow-up of a large number of women following repair of chronic fourth-degree tear. Methods: Repairs of chronic obstetric fourth-degree tears were undertaken during surgical camps at Kagando Hospital, Uganda and Selian Hospital, Tanzania, from December 2013 to October 2019. Women completed Cleveland Clinic Incontinence Scores (CCIS) on admission (face to face) and during the 7-year follow-up period (via telephone). Results: Two hundred fourteen women had medical history and CCIS completed on admission. The mean age at presentation was 33.9 years and mean duration of the condition was 8.9 years. Over a third of women stated they suffered social abandonment because of the unrepaired fourth-degree tear. Nearly 45% of women suffered the tear during the first vaginal delivery. At 1-year follow-up, 87% of 101 women scored 0 (perfect continence) and 94% of 66 women had perfect continence at 2 years. Forty-one births occurred during the follow-up period (32 vaginal deliveries) with two recurrences of fourth-degree tear. Conclusions: Follow-up in limited resource communities is challenging. Identifying vital nodes in networks exhibiting a community structure is a fundamental issue. Indeed, community structure is one of the main properties of real-world networks. Recent works have shown that community-aware centrality measures compare favorably with classical measures agnostic about this ubiquitous property. Nonetheless, there is no clear consensus about how they relate and in which situation it is better to use a classical or a community-aware centrality measure. To this end, in this paper, we perform an extensive investigation to get a better understanding of the relationship between classical and community-aware centrality measures reported in the literature. Experiments use artificial networks with controlled community structure properties and a large sample of real-world networks originating from various domains. Results indicate that the stronger the community structure, the more appropriate the community-aware centrality measures. Furthermore, variations of the degree and community size distribution parameters do not affect the results. Finally, network transitivity and community structure strength are the most significant drivers controlling the interactions between classical and community-aware centrality measures. Delineating life circles is an essential prerequisite for urban community life circle planning. Recent studies combined the environmental contexts with residents' global positioning system (GPS) data to delineate the life circles. This method, however, is constrained by GPS data, and it can only be applied in the GPS surveyed communities. To address this limitation, this study developed a generalizable delineation method without the constraint of behavioral data. According to previous research, the community life circle consists of the walking-accessible range and internal structure. The core task to develop the generalizable method was to estimate the spatiotemporal behavioral demand for each plot of land to acquire the internal structure of the life circle, as the range can be delineated primarily based on environmental data. Therefore, behavioral demand estimation models were established through logistic regression and machine learning techniques, including decision trees and ensemble learning. The model with the lowest error rate was chosen as the final estimation model for each type of land. Finally, we used a community without GPS data as an example to demonstrate the effectiveness of the estimation models and delineation method. This article extends the existing literature by introducing spatiotemporal behavioral demand estimation models, which learn the relationships between environmental contexts, population composition and the existing delineated results based on GPS data to delineate the internal structure of the community life circle without employing behavioral data. Furthermore, the proposed method and delineation results also contributes to facilities adjustments and location selections in life circle planning, people-oriented transformation in urban planning, and activity space estimation of the population in evaluating and improving the urban policies. Ecologically dominant species can shape the assembly of ecological communities via altering competitive outcomes. Moreover, these effects may be amplified under limited niche differentiation. Nevertheless, the influences of ecological dominance and niche differentiation on assembly are rarely considered together. Here, we provide a novel examination of dominance in a diverse arboreal ant community, defining dominance by the prevalent usage of nesting resources and addressing how it influences community assembly. We first used a series of quantitative observational and experimental studies to address the natural nesting ecology, colony incidence on surveyed trees, and level of dominance over newly available nesting resources by our focal species, Cephalotes pusillus. The experimental studies were then used further to examine whether C. pusillus shapes assembly via an influence on cavity usage by co-occurring species. C. pusillus was confirmed as a dominant user of cavity nesting resources, with highly generalized nesting ecology, occupying about 50% of the trees within the focal system, and accounting for more than a third of new cavity occupation in experiments. Our experiments showed further that the presence of C. pusillus was associated with modest effects on species richness, but significant decreases in cavity-occupation levels and significant shifts in the entrance-size usage by co-occurring species. These results indicate that C. pusillus, as a dominant user of nesting resources, shapes assembly at multiple levels. Broadly, our findings highlight that complex interactions between a dominant species and the resource-usage patterns of other species can underlie species assembly in diverse ecological communities. This paper explores the ways in which community wellbeing is, and could be, related to individual subjective wellbeing by mapping current practice, teasing out the assumptions underlying a dominant approach and flagging neglected issues. The notion of community is widely understood as about something more than the sum of the parts. Capturing subjective aspects of local life that are not simply individual but reflect the ways in which people feel and are well together is a challenging undertaking. Most existing frameworks for assessing community wellbeing are premised on a theory of the self as an autonomous, rational and independently acting or feeling individual, and the primary interest is on how community aspects of life impact on individual subjective wellbeing. This dominant approach consistently neglects spatial and social inequalities, multiple settings and scales and temporal choices and legacies, all of which constitute important political dimensions to community wellbeing. Social theories of the self as relational put relations as prior to subjectivity and as such afford ways to conceptualise community wellbeing in terms of being well together. A relational approach can also offer routes to tackling the complex interactions of inequality, scale and time. Such an approach is not, however, easily translated into quantitative measures or simple policy interventions. Fracture liaison services (FLS) have been shown to prevent efficiently subsequent fragility fractures (FF). However, very few studies have examined their implementation in depth. The purpose of this research was to identify factors influencing the implementation of a FLS at three sites in Quebec, Canada. From 2013 to 2015, individual and group interviews focused on experiences of FLS stakeholders, including implementation committee members, coordinators, and orthopaedic surgeons and their teams. Emerging key implementation factors were triangulated with the FLS patients' clinico-administrative data. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research guided the analysis of perceived factors influencing four intervention outputs: investigation of FF risk (using the FRAX score), communication with the participant primary care provider, initiation of anti-osteoporosis medications (when relevant), and referral to organized fall prevention activities (either governmental or community based). Among the 454 FLS patients recruited to the intervention group, 83% were investigated for FF risk, communication with the primary care provider was established for 98% of the participants, 54% initiated medication, and 35% were referred to organized fall prevention activities. Challenges related to restricted rights to prescribe medication and access to organized fall prevention activities were reported. FLS coordinator characteristics to overcome those challenges included self-efficacy beliefs, knowledge of community resources, and professional background. This study highlighted the importance of enabling access to services for subsequent FF prevention, consolidating the coordinator's role to facilitate a more integrated intervention, and involving local leaders to promote the successful implementation of the FLS. Background: Connecting patients to community-based resources is now a cornerstone of modern healthcare that supports self-management of health. The mechanisms that link resource information to behavior change, however, remain poorly understood.Objective: To evaluate the impact of CommunityRx, an automated, low-intensity resource referral intervention, on patients' knowledge, beliefs, and use of community resources.Design: Real-world controlled clinical trial at an urban academic medical center in 2015-2016; participants were assigned by alternating week to receive the CommunityRx intervention or usual care. Surveys were administered at baseline, 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months.Participants: Publicly insured adults, ages 45-74 years.Intervention: CommunityRx generated an automated, personalized list of resources, known as HealtheRx, near each participant's home using condition-specific, evidence-based algorithms. Algorithms used patient demographic and health characteristics documented in the electronic health record to identify relevant resources from a comprehensive, regularly updated database of health-related resources in the study area.Main Measures: Using intent-to-treat analysis, we examined the impact of HealtheRx referrals on (1) knowledge of the most commonly referred resource types, including healthy eating classes, individual counseling, mortgage assistance, smoking cessation, stress management, and weight loss classes or groups, and (2) beliefs about having resources in the community to manage health.Key Results: In a real-world controlled trial of 374 adults, intervention recipients improved knowledge (AOR = 2.15; 95% CI, 1.29-3.58) and beliefs (AOR = 1.68; 95% CI, 1.07-2.64) about common resources in the community to manage health, specifically gaining knowledge about smoking cessation (AOR = 2.76; 95% CI, 1.07-7.12) and weight loss resources (AOR = 2.26; 95% CI 1.05-4.84). This paper examines the determinants of the density of nonprofits registered in the USA by using alternative measures of government services and community conditions to test government failure theory and interdependence theory. Specifically, we examined the relationship between governments and nonprofits in the fields of art, health, and human services, with an emphasis on the level of the provision of public services, the heterogeneous demands of populations, and for-profit service providers. We found that the size of government, measured as government wage and fiscal decentralization, was negatively associated with the density of nonprofits, while government fragmentation was positively related to the density of nonprofits. The heterogeneity of community populations tended to increase nonprofit density. Taken together, therefore, our results offer more support for the government failure theory than the interdependence theory. Also, our findings that for-profit service organizations were positively related to the density of nonprofits call for researchers to pay attention to nonprofit partners and competitors in future studies. Despite volunteering being a feature of community life in the UK, differences as to who volunteers are evident. Reporting on a rapid review of the evidence on volunteering and inequalities, the aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the breadth and interconnectedness of barriers to volunteering for potentially disadvantaged groups. Sixty-seven articles were identified, to produce a map of factors affecting volunteer participation. Findings suggest that whilst different demographic groups experience specific barriers to volunteering, there are areas of commonality. Analysis shifts the onus of volunteering away from the level of individual choice (a dominant emphasis in policy and practical discussions around promoting volunteering) and towards the influence of structural factors related to broader exclusionary processes. Those who potentially have the most to gain from volunteering are the least likely to participate. Whilst the benefits of volunteering are increasingly documented by research and championed by policy, there are questions about the success of this approach given that the underlying social inequalities present substantive barriers to volunteering and must be addressed to promote greater access. With China's rapid urbanization, more and more peasants are forced to relocate in urban communities. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of community participation in older women's relocation adjustment and to further examine the moderated mediation mechanism with sense of community as a mediator and personal resilience as a moderator. Using a cross-sectional design, 205 older women relocatees (50–88 years old) in Chongqing, China, completed measures of community participation, sense of community, resilience, and relocation adjustment (well-being, depression, and loneliness). The results showed that community participation had a positive effect on adjustment. In addition, sense of community mediated the association between community participation and adjustment. Moreover, community participation's indirect effect on adjustment through sense of community depended on older women's personal resilience. Specifically, sense of community mediated the association between community participation and adjustment for older women with low resilience but not for older women with high resilience. This study highlighted the importance of community resources to older women's relocation adjustment. Previous studies have rarely examined the cross-national equivalence of instruments aimed at assessing domain-specific life satisfaction. The present study evaluated the cross-national measurement invariance of the Personal Wellbeing Index-Adult (PWI-A), an instrument designed to measure levels of satisfaction with seven domains of life: standard of living, health, achieving in life, relationships, safety, community-connectedness, and future security. In addition, we investigated (a) the mean country differences in both global and domain-specific satisfaction; (b) the contribution of domain satisfactions to global life satisfaction across countries; (c) the associations between both individual domains and the total PWI-A score with measures of global life satisfaction. A total sample consisted of 1153 undergraduate students (age range 18-35 years) from five European countries: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, and Serbia. The results provided support for the full scalar invariance of the PWI-A across countries. Satisfactions with standard of living, achieving in life, and personal relationships were significant predictors of global life satisfaction in each country. Significant differences in global life satisfaction, and satisfactions with standard of living, safety, community, and future security were found between the countries. Strong correlations between the total PWI-A score and measures of global life satisfaction (r range from.58 to.83) obtained across all five countries support the use of the total PWI-A score as an indicator of overall life satisfaction. The paper presents a data-based comparison of three indicators of social isolation that are frequently used in contemporary social research: (a) low frequency of social contact with friends, relatives, and neighbors (social contact indicator); (b) absence of a discussion network (discussion network indicator); (c) absence of social support (support indicator). All three indicators are in line with an understanding of social isolation as the absence of close personal relationships. However, as shown in this paper, they are correlated only weakly to each other and lead to different results concerning the overall share of social isolation, age disparities, and gender differences of social isolation. Against this background, the paper proceeds with considerations on the content validity and criterion validity of the three indicators. Different versions of each indicator are scrutinized to gain insights on content validity. Conclusions on criterion validity are drawn from an examination of the correlations between the indicators and health, poverty, satisfaction with family life, and satisfaction with social life. Findings suggest a higher validity of the social contact indicator compared to the other two indicators. Data source is the German Socio-Economic Panel. The present study examines the influence that environmental variables exerted on changes in condition index (CI), shell height (SH-dorsal-ventral axis) and soft tissue mass increments (STM) of the winged oyster Pteria colymbus in suspended culture during periods of upwelling (December to April) and non-upwelling (August to November) in the Cariaco Gulf, northeastern Venezuela. Environmental variables recorded between April 2012 and May 2013 included seston, water transparency, temperature, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll a (Chl a) and the upwelling index (UI). Individuals were cultivated in lantern nets with an overall density of 56 individuals/0.123 m. From three randomly chosen baskets, five individuals were sampled each month and changes in CI, STM and SH were related to the environmental variables using Spearman correlation and PCA. Results show that during upwelling, both Chl a and UI presented a positive and significant relationship with the oyster condition and growth parameters. During non-upwelling (low UI), this relationship was inverse, demonstrating the important influence of upwelling and non-upwelling periods on the ecophysiology of the species. Furthermore, it was shown that the non-upwelling, characterized by high temperatures and low food availability, is a critical period for P. colymbus, judging by a decrease in growth and survival rate. Nonetheless, this species reached 50 mm in 5 months, a size considered as commercially viable, suggesting that the study area is favourable to the cultivation of the winged oyster despite a dramatic decrease in upwelling intensity in the last decade. This paper contributes to the literature regarding gendered patterns of participation in conservation by examining participation in sea turtle conservation and community life in coastal Northeast Brazil. We used a mixed methods approach, comprised of questionnaires and focus groups, and our findings indicate that conservation participation can be partially explained by gendered characteristics related to issues of structural access, cultural attitudes and values, and agency. Results show greater gender differences in access and agency than attitudes toward sea turtle conservation, demonstrating how patterns of participation are influenced by close knit and gendered social networks that decrease an individual's chance of being invited to participate. While gender issues are not universal, a framework examining issues of structure, culture, and agency allows differences related to age, class, race, etc. to be considered as well, presenting useful information in understanding the barriers and motivations involved in conservation participation. This study is a longitudinal investigation of the Promoting School-community-university Partnerships to Enhance Resilience (PROSPER) partnership model designed to evaluate the level of sustainability funding by community prevention teams, including which factors impact teams' generation of sustainable funding. Community teams were responsible for choosing, implementing with quality, and sustaining evidence-based programs (EBPs) intended to reduce substance misuse and promote positive youth and family development. Fourteen US rural communities and small towns were studied. Data were collected from PROSPER community team members ( N = 164) and prevention coordinators ( N = 10) over a 5-year period. Global and specific aspects of team functioning were assessed over six waves. Outcome measures were the total funds (cash and in-kind) raised to implement prevention programs. All 14 community teams were sustained for the first 5 years. However, there was substantial variability in the amount of funds raised, and these differences were predicted by earlier and concurrent team functioning and by team sustainability planning. Given the sufficient infrastructure and ongoing technical assistance provided by the PROSPER partnership model, local sustainability of EBPs is achievable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Low back pain (LBP) is common and social isolation is both a risk factor for poor recovery from LBP and a consequence of LBP. The Friendship Scale is a brief measure of social isolation that has been validated for use in the general population and in people with LBP. The aim of this study was to translate, culturally adapt and validate the Friendship Scale into Danish. Translation of the English version of the Friendship Scale was performed independently by professional translators and overseen by an expert team. The Danish version was initially tested for face validity in a sample of 44 LBP patients. Subsequently, validity was examined through factor analysis, internal consistency, sensitivity by known groups and Rasch analysis in a sample of 382 Danish adult patients with LBP attending a secondary care spine centre and a general population sample of 293 people. Construct validity was examined by the relationship between Friendship Scale classification scores and study group membership and pain level. A linguistically accurate translation was achieved and no hesitation or ambiguity was observed in people completing this version. The psychometric properties of the Danish version were very similar to those found in the original version. This Danish translation of the Friendship Scale appeared to be easily understood by Danish people and has similar performance characteristics to the original version. This study examines variation in healthcare quality among substance abuse treatment agencies. Using an organizations framework, the authors predict that resource advantages benefit certain types of healthcare organizations, especially those located in affluent communities. As a result, levels of licensing and accreditation of substance abuse treatment agencies will differ across United States counties. The authors model these resources at both the organizational and community levels in an effort to understand the variability of licensing and accreditation between agencies and their local contexts. In multivariate models, the findings confirm that organizational characteristics such as private ownership (compared to public ownership), managed care contracts, inpatient and residential programs (compared to outpatient settings), as well as socioeconomic, racial/ethnic, and healthcare system advantage promote higher levels of licensing and accreditation. Public ownership and outpatient settings, as well as socioeconomic, racial/ethnic, and healthcare system disadvantage, are associated with lower levels of licensing and accreditation. This paper explores the manner in which Jewish community contexts relate to Jewish identity. We employ the Decade 2000 Data Set that contains almost 20,000 randomly selected Jewish households from 22 American Jewish communities interviewed from 2000 to 2010. Because of the large sample size, and its incorporation of community infrastructure data, this research also is able to examine various influences on Jewish identity that have not been definitively addressed in previous research, including the manner in which characteristics of Jewish community infrastructure are related to individuals' Jewish identity. The Decade 2000 Data Set used for the analysis is described and some of the methodological considerations involved in its use are presented. Jewish identity is conceptualized as multidimensional, and a factor analysis results in four Jewish identity factors: a communal religious factor, a private religious factor, a broader ethnic factor, and a local ethnic factor. Multiple regressions for each of the Jewish identity factors are related to Jewish community characteristics; more commonly researched individual-level variables (Jewish background and connections, family status, socioeconomic status, demographic/geographic characteristics); and survey-level variables (such as size of sample and year of study) are also controlled. Surprisingly, except for the local ethnic factor, Jewish community characteristics have little relationship to individual Jewish identity. The Alderley Sandhills Project (ASP) was designed to archaeologically explore the transformative roles of industrialization and de-industrialization on the working communities of rural England. Collection of oral histories was an intrinsic element of fieldwork, with project participants including elderly former residents and neighbors of the excavated cottages. Their narratives provided a crucial source for understanding social meanings of the archaeological objects and places within this study site, particularly over the inter-war decades of the early twentieth century. Drawing from elements of this multi-year project, this paper will explore the dynamic maintenance of community life through the composition of social memories, and the materiality of social belonging, to illuminate the inner world of the Hagg Cottages of Alderley Edge, Cheshire. Purpose: To explore the association between risk of malnutrition as well as current body mass index (BMI) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in elderly men and women from the general population. Methods: In a cross-sectional population survey including 1,632 men and 1,654 women aged 65 to 87 years from the municipality of Tromsø, Norway, we assessed HRQoL by using the EuroQol (EQ-5D) instrument in three risk groups of malnutrition and in different categories of BMI. The Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool ('MUST') was used to evaluate the risk of malnutrition. Results: We found a significant reduction in HRQoL with an increasing risk of malnutrition, and this was more pronounced in men than in women. The relationship between BMI and HRQoL was dome shaped, with the highest score values in the BMI category being 25-27.5 kg/m. Conclusions: HRQoL was significantly reduced in elderly men and women at risk of malnutrition. The highest HRQoL was seen in moderately overweight individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The completeness of hospital discharge summaries may reflect the overall quality of inter-professional communications. The effect of reducing resident workload on clinical performance is largely unknown.Objective: We examined the impact of reducing housestaff workload on the quality of discharge summaries, an indicator of clinical performance, as compared to discharge summaries created by trainees on a team with a more typical workload.Design: Patients admitted to a medicine service at a community teaching hospital affiliated with an academic medical center were alternately allocated between a control and intervention care team of residents. First-year residents on the intervention team carried an average census of 3.5 patients compared with 6.6 patients for peers on the control team. A random selection of 142 discharge summaries from a 3-month period were blindly evaluated using a structured tool based on professional documentation standards.Participants: 61 internal medicine residents.Main Results: Inter-rater reliability of discharge summary quality was 0.9. Discharge summaries produced by residents on the intervention team with a reduced workload had significantly more of the required elements (74 vs 65%, p<0.001). Intervention team summaries were more frequently complete and contained significantly more of the required elements describing the patient history (65.7% vs 36.1%, p=0.0005), the inpatient narrative (47.1% vs 22.2%, p=0.003), discharge planning (20.0% vs 5.5%, p=0.012), and continuity of care (24.3% vs 6.9%, p=0.005). Fewer than a quarter of the summaries reviewed included discharge instructions, information on follow-up care, or a discharge medication list.Conclusions: Reducing resident workload can significantly improve discharge summary quality, a measure of resident performance. This study aimed to (1) explore whether quality of life (QOL) is more associated with satisfaction with social participation (SP) than with level of accomplishment in SP and (2) examine respective correlates of accomplishment level and satisfaction with SP. A cross-sectional design was used with a convenience sample of 155 older adults (mean age = 73.7; 60% women) having various levels of activity limitations. Accomplishment level and satisfaction with SP (dependent variables) were estimated with the social roles items of the assessment of life habits. Potential correlates were human functioning components. Correlations between QOL and accomplishment level and satisfaction with SP did not differ ( P = 0.71). However, best correlates of accomplishment level and satisfaction with SP were different. Higher accomplishment level of SP was best explained by younger age, activity level perceived as stable, no recent stressing event, better well-being, higher activity level, and fewer obstacles in “Physical environment and accessibility” ( R2 = 0.79). Greater satisfaction with SP was best explained by activity level perceived as stable, better self-perceived health, better well-being, higher activity level, and more facilitators in “Social support and attitudes” ( R2 = 0.51). Korean Americans experience many challenges to obtaining adequate health care coverage and access to needed services. Because a large proportion of Korean Americans attend churches on a regular basis, churches may be a promising venue where health programs can be delivered. In order to gain an in-depth understanding of Korean American churches with respect to conducting future health intervention research, we conducted exploratory interviews and focus groups with 58 leaders from 23 Korean American churches and three community organizations. From these interviews and focus groups, we found that Korean churches and church leaders seek to meet a variety of social and health needs of their congregation and their surrounding community. Several leaders have stated that assisting with social and medical needs of their members is an important component of their current ministry. They described profound health needs of their congregations and have suggested various ways in which the university can partner with the local churches to help address these needs through research. Additionally, they described various resources churches can provide to researchers such as: their personal assistance, church volunteer base, church facility, and church network and contacts. Our findings suggest that Korean churches have a high potential to serve an important role in the health of Korean Americans. On the basis of the promising results of the present study, we are planning to conduct a cross sectional survey of Korean church leaders and members in Los Angeles County to substantiate our findings in a larger representative sample. Often, African American community organizations are distanced from government institutional practices. In response, they may approach local academics to help bridge the divide. This think piece explores lessons that one academic scholar learned during the process of writing and distributing an applied report that ultimately helped a community organization to gain access to the governmental decision making process. In exploring the project, we first focus on the process and value of shifting from a charity orientation to a social justice orientation. Second, we use the report itself to provide examples of essential, concrete aspects of social justice-oriented products. In the end, we argue that academic scholars can contribute to community empowerment if (1) an asset rather than deficit orientation is employed and (2) scholars are viewed as community assets rather than institutional resources. In the past two decades, the fields of public health and social services have increasingly turned toward collaborative and community-based approaches to address complex health and social issues. One aspect of these approaches has been the development and implementation of community coalitions. Coalitions have been used to successfully address a wide range of issues, including cancer prevention, tobacco use, HIV/AIDS, youth violence, heart disease, diabetes, and sexual exploitation of youth runaways. In south Tucson, Arizona the SEAH coalition was developed to address diabetes and substance abuse prevention. Using a qualitative interview guide, the Culture of Health Survey, this study was aimed at identifying community perceptions of the coalition and its effectiveness in the areas of community leadership, partnerships, trust, and movement towards positive change. We also sought to document the dissemination, throughout a community, of information on the activities and functioning of a community based coalition and whether or not it was seen as one that held fast to the community values and not to individual agendas. To develop and test the Maastricht Social Participation Profile (MSPP), an instrument measuring the actual social participation by older adults with a chronic physical illness, in accordance with their own definition of social participation. The development process consisted of a number of steps, ending with a field test in two waves ( n = 412 and n = 125) among a random sample of people older than 59 years with either COPD or diabetes mellitus. Reproducibility was evaluated with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) and smallest real differences at group level (SRDsgroup). Convergent and discriminant validity were evaluated with Pearson correlation coefficients between the MSPP and the Frenchay Activities Index (FAI). The MSPP consists of four indices: consumptive participation, formal social participation, informal social participation-acquaintances and informal social participation-family. Each index measured diversity and frequency of participation. ICCs ranged between 0.63 and 0.83. SRDsgroup ranged between 0.05 and 0.09. Convergent and discriminant validity were supported by the correlations between the MSPPfrequency and the FAI. The MSPP has good validity and acceptable reproducibility. Its distinguishing features are its focus on actual social participation and the possibility to calculate both diversity and frequency scores. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
