This study delves into the repercussions of the 2023 earthquake in Turkey, particularity its impact on air pollution. A year post-event, it is evident that scientific literature has paid limited attention to monitoring the situation. However, the release of hazardous substances, such as asbestos, lead, and other toxins, from damaged structures poses a significant threat by contaminating nearby air, soil, and water sources, thereby jeopardizing ecosystems and public well-being. The improper disposal of waste post-earthquake and the presence of mining and oil refinery sites in the region contribute to potential air pollutants. These circumstances create challenging environments conducive to the spread of respiratory diseases, with potential long-term health and social consequences. Unfortunately, existing data gaps hinder a comprehensive understanding of the situation. This paper pioneers the reporting and analysis of data regarding potential sources of air pollution resulting from the earthquake in Turkey. It also pinpoints gaps in knowledge, outlining areas that demand further investigation. To effectively prevent and mitigate air pollution risks and associated health concerns linked to earthquakes, strategic recommendations are proposed. A key suggestion is the establishment of post-disaster air pollution monitoring systems capable of swiftly identifying emerging health issues, facilitating efficient responses, and curtailing potential long-term effects of the disaster. The paper underscores the necessity for continuous health monitoring of the affected population to mitigate possible adverse impacts on human health. These strategies play a pivotal role in reducing the likelihood of air pollution, supporting emergency response and recovery initiatives, and fostering new dedicated scientific studies. Skin exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation and pollutants causes several skin disorders, calling for protection methods such as sunscreen application. However, common sunscreen contains chemicals that have displayed toxicity when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, alternatives approaches have been recently developed, such as the use of natural phytochemicals as active ingredients in photoprotection preparations. Here, we review skin protection with focus on the physics of ultraviolet radiation and photoprotection by ultraviolet filters. We present sensors for measuring ultraviolet radiation and ultraviolet radiation in ecosystems. We discuss the phototoxicity of drugs, preservatives, personal care products, and pollutants. Photocarcinogenesis, photoallergy, photostability, and toxicity of sunscreen ingredients and their impacts on human health and skin, are also reviewed. Globally, substantial research into endophytic microbes is being conducted to increase agricultural and environmental sustainability. Endophytic microbes such as bacteria, actinomycetes, and fungi inhabit ubiquitously within the tissues of all plant species without causing any harm or disease. Endophytes form symbiotic relationships with diverse plant species and can regulate numerous host functions, including resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses, growth and development, and stimulating immune systems. Moreover, plant endophytes play a dominant role in nutrient cycling, biodegradation, and bioremediation, and are widely used in many industries. Endophytes have a stronger predisposition for enhancing mineral and metal solubility by cells through the secretion of organic acids with low molecular weight and metal-specific ligands (such as siderophores) that alter soil pH and boost binding activity. Finally, endophytes synthesize various bioactive compounds with high competence that are promising candidates for new drugs, antibiotics, and medicines. Bioprospecting of endophytic novel secondary metabolites has given momentum to sustainable agriculture for combating environmental stresses. Biotechnological interventions with the aid of endophytes played a pivotal role in crop improvement to mitigate biotic and abiotic stress conditions like drought, salinity, xenobiotic compounds, and heavy metals. Identification of putative genes from endophytes conferring resistance and tolerance to crop diseases, apart from those involved in the accumulation and degradation of contaminants, could open new avenues in agricultural research and development. Furthermore, a detailed molecular and biochemical understanding of endophyte entry and colonization strategy in the host would better help in manipulating crop productivity under changing climatic conditions. Therefore, the present review highlights current research trends based on the SCOPUS database, potential biotechnological interventions of endophytic microorganisms in combating environmental stresses influencing crop productivity, future opportunities of endophytes in improving plant stress tolerance, and their contribution to sustainable remediation of hazardous environmental contaminants. Traditional wastewater treatment has been aimed solely at sanitation by removing contaminants, yet actual issues of climate change and depletion of natural resources are calling for methods that both remove contaminants and convert waste into chemicals and fuels. In particular, biological treatments with synergic coupling of microalgae and bacteria appear promising to remove organic, inorganic, and pathogen contaminants and to generate biofuels. Here, we review the use of algae and bacteria in the treatment and valorization of wastewater with focus on cell-to-cell adhesion, wastewater properties, and techniques for algae harvesting and production of biodiesel, bioethanol, biohydrogen, exopolysaccarides, biofertilizers, and animal feeds. Microplastics pollution is major threat to ecosystems and is impacting abiotic and biotic components. Microplastics are diverse and highly complex contaminants that transport other contaminants and microbes. Current methods to remove microplastics include biodegradation, incineration, landfilling, and recycling. Here we review microplastics with focus on sources, toxicity, and biodegradation. We discuss the role of algae, fungi, bacteria in the biodegradation, and we present biotechnological methods to enhance degradation, e.g., gene editing tools and bioinformatics. Soil contamination by toxic metals is a major health issue that could be partly solved by using genetically-modified plants. For that, the recently developed technique of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) has created a new dimension in genetic engineering. CRISPR was first found as a part of the adaptive immune system in bacteria and archaea, and further refined to generate targeted breaks in DNA in a broad range of organisms. Various DNA changes can take place during the cellular repair process. Many plants, including crops, have the potential to tolerate, stabilize, and transform both organic and metal contaminants and have been already modified using the CRISPR method. Furthermore, many genes necessary to increase the absorption and tolerance of metals have been identified. Thus, using CRISPR, target genes could be activated or repressed to optimize phytoremediation in plants. Here we review the CRISPR/Cas9 technology applied to phytoremediation and sequestration of metals in the soil environment. The availability of the genome sequence plays a critical role in the adaptation of the CRISPR-mediated genome editing to specific plants. CRISPR has demonstrated outstanding potential for genome editing. However, the outcome depends on the selected target site, Cas9/Cpf1 function, gRNA design, delivery systems, and the off-target effects that may restrict its efficacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tokyo Summer Olympics and Paralympics have raised social issues regarding the potential rise in COVID-19 cases in Japan and risks associated with the safe organization of mega sporting events during the pandemic, such as the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. This study investigates the Tokyo Summer Olympics as a unique case study to clarify the drivers of infectivity and provide guidelines to host countries for the safe organization of subsequent international sporting events. The result here reveals that Tokyo and Japan did not experience a rise in confirmed cases of COVID-19 due to the hosting of the Summer Olympics. Still, transmission dynamics seems to be mainly driven by the high density of population (about 1.2%, p-value <0.001) like other larger cities in Japan (result confirmed with Mann-Whitney U test, significance at 0.05). Our study provided evidence that hosting mega sporting events during this COVID-19 pandemic is safe if strictly maintained the precautions with non-pharmaceutical (and pharmaceutical) measures of control of infections. Almost all aspects of society from food security to disease control and prevention have benefited from pharmaceutical and personal care products, yet these products are a major source of contamination that ends up in wastewater and ecosystems. This issue has been sharply accentuated during the coronavirus disease pandemic 2019 (COVID-19) due to the higher use of disinfectants and other products. The industrial incineration of aviary manure is still far from the concept of using its ash residuals for nutrient uptake by plants and most of these materials are landfilled under futile fixed cost. Aviary manure includes poultry litter mixed with different aviary bedding materials or laying hens manure, which may be burned using different incineration technologies and conditions. This study aims to determine the comparative characterisation of P-rich ash residues sampled at Güres Energy (Turkey) fluidized bed combustion of laying hens manure and at Campoaves (Portugal) chain grate stoker combustion of rice husk poultry litter. The effect of different fuels and different combustion systems on P speciation in ash was investigated: the characterisation of global samples (bottom ash (BA), economiser fly ash (FAECO), cyclone fly ash (FACYC)) and respective size-fractions were done chemically (proximate and elemental analysis by X-ray fluorescence–XRF–and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy – ICP-MS), morphologically (detailed imaging and X-ray micro analysis by Scanning Electron Microscopy—Energy-Dispersive X-ray spectrometry–SEM−EDS) and mineralogically (X-ray diffraction–XRD). Phosphorus was detected in Güres ashes mainly as hydroxyapatite crystals alongside with CaCO3 relics and CaO, while Campoaves ash fractions contained P also as Na–K-Mg phosphate and major amounts of rice husk relics including unburnt char and silica phases. Both Güres and Campoaves ashes are complex but the combustion of aviary manure under these setting conditions appears to be promising for P recovery owing to their high P content and limited trace elements respecting the limitations imposed by EU legislation for fertilisers applications. This work supports, for the first time, the integrated management of waste materials arising from industrial processes (fly ash from municipal solid waste incineration and coal fly ash), agriculture (rice husk ash), and domestic activities (ash from wood biomass burning in domestic stoves). The main novelty of the paper is the reuse of wood pellet ash, an underestimated environmental problem, by the application of a new technology (COSMOS-RICE) that already involves the reuse of fly ashes from industrial and agricultural origins. The reaction mechanism involves carbonation: this occurs at room temperature and promotes permanent carbon dioxide sequestration. The obtained samples were characterized using XRD and TGA (coupled with mass spectroscopy). This allowed quantification of the mass loss attributed to different calcium carbonate phases. In particular, samples stabilized using wood pellet ash show a weight loss, attributed to the decomposition of carbonates greater than 20%. In view of these results, it is possible to conclude that there are several environmental benefits from wood pellet ash reuse in this way. Supported FeO/WO nanocomposites were fabricated by an original vapor phase approach, involving the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of FeO on Ti sheets and the subsequent radio frequency (RF)-sputtering of WO. Particular attention was dedicated to the control of the W/Fe ratio, in order to tailor the composition of the resulting materials. The target systems were analyzed by the joint use of complementary techniques, that is, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), and optical absorption spectroscopy. The results showed the uniform decoration of α-FeO ( hematite) globular particles by tiny WO aggregates, whose content could be controlled by modulations of the sole sputtering time. The photocatalytic degradation of phenol in the liquid phase was selected as a test reaction for a preliminary investigation of the system behavior in wastewater treatment applications. Total reflection x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (TXRF) is proposed for the elemental chemical analysis of crustal environmental samples, such as sediments and soils. A comparative study of TXRF with respect to flame atomic absorption spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy was performed. Microwave acid digestion and suspension preparation methods are evaluated. A good agreement was found among the results obtained with different spectroscopic techniques and sample preparation methods for Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, and Zn. We demonstrated that TXRF is suitable for the assessment of environmental contamination phenomena, even if the errors for Pb, As, V, and Ba are ingent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fly ash (FA) is a by-product of power, and incineration plants operated either on coal and biomass, or on municipal solid waste. FA can be divided into coal fly ash, obtained from power plant burning coal, flue gas desulphurisation FA, that is, the by-product generated by the air pollution control equipment in coal-fired power plants to reduce the release of SO, biomass FA produced in the plants for thermal conversion of biomass and municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) FA, that is, the finest residue obtained from the scrubber system in a MSWI plant. Because of the large amount produced in the world, fly ash is now considered the world's fifth largest material resource. The composition of FA is very variable, depending on its origins; then, also pollutants can be very different. In this frame, it is fundamental to exploit the chemical or physical potentials of FA constituents, thus rendering them second-life functionality. This review paper is addressed to FA typology, composition, treatment, recycling, functional reuse and metal and organic pollutants abatement. Because of the general growing of environmental awareness and increasing energy and material demand, it is expected that increasing recycling rates will reduce the pressure on demand for primary raw materials, help to reuse valuable materials which would otherwise be wasted and reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from extraction and processing. Metal traces from atmospheric deposition can be evaluated by standard biomonitors such as lichens. Lichens can be analyzed by several techniques in order to quantify metals. Micro X-Ray Fluorescence (µXRF) is used for the lichen analysis. µXRF technique has various advantages with respect of other methods: multi-elemental analysis, fast elemental determination and no contamination effect. Furthermore, µXRF analysis can be performed in-situ, thus allowing to monitor efficiently industrial locations. An industrial district in the Brescia area was monitored by analysing lichens as bio-accumulator. To validate and quantify the µXRF results, Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) was employed. X-ray experiments with a spatial resolution of lower then 1 µm have been achieved with microfocus sources by means of high brilliance 3rd generation synchrotrons. Recently the availability of high-sensitivity, high-resolution and large area detectors, as for example image plate, has allowed the analysis of samples with a spatial resolution of few tens of micrometers also with conventional laboratory sources. X-ray microdiffraction (µXRD) experiments have also been considered with increasing interest for phase identification and to evaluate the crystallite size distribution and preferred orientation. Coupled with X-ray microfluorescence (µXRF), this technique allows a complete characterisation of very small samples and/or with complex geometry. In this paper interesting applications of these laboratory techniques for the characterisation of deposits from superheater tubes of solid waste incinerator are shown. The high resolution of the probe allows the precise determination of the mixture of salts and oxides forming the deposits. This information is mandatory for the understanding of corrosion mechanisms which take place in the tubes. Micrometer-size beam dimension allows samples a few micrometers in size to be analysed and the phase composition of different areas to be mapped. Moreover, it is possible to investigate objects with complex geometry.
