The emergence of collective order in matter is among the most fundamental and intriguing phenomena in physics. In recent years, the dynamical control and creation of novel ordered states of matter not accessible in thermodynamic equilibrium is receiving much attention1–6. The theoretical concept of dynamical multiferroicity has been introduced to describe the emergence of magnetization due to time-dependent electric polarization in non-ferromagnetic materials7,8. In simple terms, the coherent rotating motion of the ions in a crystal induces a magnetic moment along the axis of rotation. Here we provide experimental evidence of room-temperature magnetization in the archetypal paraelectric perovskite SrTiO3 due to this mechanism. We resonantly drive the infrared-active soft phonon mode with an intense circularly polarized terahertz electric field and detect the time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. A simple model, which includes two coupled nonlinear oscillators whose forces and couplings are derived with ab initio calculations using self-consistent phonon theory at a finite temperature9, reproduces qualitatively our experimental observations. A quantitatively correct magnitude was obtained for the effect by also considering the phonon analogue of the reciprocal of the Einstein–de Haas effect, which is also called the Barnett effect, in which the total angular momentum from the phonon order is transferred to the electronic one. Our findings show a new path for the control of magnetism, for example, for ultrafast magnetic switches, by coherently controlling the lattice vibrations with light.We demonstrate the emergence of magnetism induced by a terahertz electric field in SrTiO3. We investigated cross-sectionally whether the type 2 diabetes (T2DM) risk alleles of rs1801282 ( PPARG2) and rs4607103 ( ADAMTS9) were associated with T2DM and/or insulin sensitivity (IS) and beta cell function (βF) in Italians without and with newly diagnosed T2DM. In 676 nondiabetic subjects (336 NGR and 340 IGR) from the GENFIEV study and in 597 patients from the Verona Newly Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes Study (VNDS), we (1) genotyped rs1801282 and rs4607103, (2) assessed βF by C-peptide/glucose modeling after OGTT, and (3) assessed IS by HOMA-IR in both studies and by euglycemic insulin clamp in VNDS only. Logistic, linear, and two-stage least squares regression analyses were used to test (a) genetic associations with T2DM and with pathophysiological phenotypes, (b) causal relationships of the latter ones with T2DM by a Mendelian randomization design. Both SNPs were associated with T2DM. The rs4607103 risk allele was associated to impaired βF ( p < 0.01) in the GENFIEV study and in both cohorts combined. The rs1801282 genotype was associated with IS both in the GENFIEV study ( p < 0.03) and in the VNDS ( p < 0.03), whereas rs4607103 did so in the VNDS only ( p = 0.01). In a Mendelian randomization design, both HOMA-IR (instrumental variables: rs1801282, rs4607103) and βF (instrumental variable: rs4607103) were related to T2DM ( p < 0.03-0.01 and p < 0.03, respectively). PPARG2 and ADAMTS9 variants are both associated with T2DM and with insulin resistance, whereas only ADAMTS9 may be related to βF. Spin torque oscillators with nanoscale electrical contacts are able to produce coherent spin waves in extended magnetic films, and offer an attractive combination of electrical and magnetic field control, broadband operation, fast spin-wave frequency modulation, and the possibility of synchronizing multiple spin-wave injection sites. However, many potential applications rely on propagating (as opposed to localized) spin waves, and direct evidence for propagation has been lacking. Here, we directly observe a propagating spin wave launched from a spin torque oscillator with a nanoscale electrical contact into an extended Permalloy (nickel iron) film through the spin transfer torque effect. The data, obtained by wave-vector-resolved micro-focused Brillouin light scattering, show that spin waves with tunable frequencies can propagate for several micrometres. Results of background measurements with a prototype of the Borexino detector were used to search for 478 keV solar axions emitted in the M1-transitions of 7Li*. The Compton conversion of axion to a photon A+e→e+γ, axioelectric effect A+e+Z→e+Z, decay of axion in two photons A→2γ and Primakoff conversion on nuclei A+Z→γ+Z are considered. The upper limit on constants of interaction of axion with electrons, photons and nucleons – gAegAN≤(1.0–2.4)×10-10 at mA≤450 keV and gAγgAN≤5×10-9 GeV-1 at mA≤10 keV are obtained (90%c.l.). For heavy axions with mass at 100A<400 keV the limits gAe<(0.7–2.0)×10-8 and gAγ<10-9–10-8 are obtained in assumption that gAN depends on mA as for KSVZ axion model. These limits are stronger than obtained in previous laboratory-based experiments using nuclear reactor and artificial radioactive sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electron antineutrino interactions above the inverse beta decay energy of protons (Eν̄e>1.8 MeV) were looked for with the Borexino counting test facility (CTF). One candidate event survived after rejection of background, which included muon-induced neutrons and random coincidences. An upper limit on the solar ν̄e flux, assumed having the 8B solar neutrino energy spectrum, of 1.1×105 cm-2 s-1 (90% C.L.) was set with a 7.8 ton × year exposure. This upper limit corresponds to a solar neutrino transition probability, νe→ν̄e, of 0.02 (90% C.L.). Predictions for antineutrino detection with Borexino, including geoneutrinos, are discussed on the basis of background measurements performed with the CTF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Pauli exclusion principle (PEP) has been tested for nucleons (n,p) inandnuclei, using the results of background measurements with the prototype of the Borexino detector, the Counting Test Facility (CTF). The approach consisted of a search for,n,pand/or’s emitted in a non-Paulian transition of 1P- shell nucleons to the filled 1S1/2 shell in nuclei. Similarly, the Pauli-forbiddendecay processes were searched for. Borex, an experiment to observe solar neutrinos using boron-loaded liquid scintillation techniques, is being developed for operation at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. It aims to observe the spectrum of electron type B solar neutrinos via charged current inverse β-decay of B and the total flux of solar neutrinos regardless of flavor by excitation of B via the weak neutral current. A measurement of the lifetime of the Λ baryon photoproduced coherently off a Germanium-Silicon target is presented. A signal of Λ→ ΔK*→ pKππ has been observed and the two different decay diagrams for this process are compared. A sample of 9 Λ decays gives a lifetime of 1.110 s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sub-picosecond magnetisation manipulation via femtosecond optical pumping has attracted wide attention ever since its original discovery in 1996. However, the spatial evolution of the magnetisation is not yet well understood, in part due to the difficulty in experimentally probing such rapid dynamics. Here, we find evidence of a universal rapid magnetic order recovery in ferrimagnets with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy via nonlinear magnon processes. We identify magnon localisation and coalescence processes, whereby localised magnetic textures nucleate and subsequently interact and grow in accordance with a power law formalism. A hydrodynamic representation of the numerical simulations indicates that the appearance of noncollinear magnetisation via optical pumping establishes exchange-mediated spin currents with an equivalent 100% spin polarised charge current density of 107 A cm−2. Such large spin currents precipitate rapid recovery of magnetic order after optical pumping. The magnon processes discussed here provide new insights for the stabilization of desired meta-stable states. The understanding of the magnetisation evolution upon femtosecond optical pumping remains elusive. In a simple model of production with an imported polluting resource and involuntary unemployment we consider the effects of energy taxes,holding the real wage constant, under differing levels of governmentexpenditure and externalities. Simulations reveal conflict between the goals of net welfare, employment and profitability over much of the relevant parameter range, thus extending the usual discussion of multiple dividends. However, potential net welfare and employment gainsare substantial for plausible parameters. L-lactate is an important metabolite, energy source, and signaling molecule in health and disease. In mammals, its transport across biological membranes is mediated by monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs) of the solute carrier 16 (SLC16) family. Malfunction, overexpression or absence of transporters of this family are associated with diseases such as cancer and type 2 diabetes. Moreover, lactate acts as a signaling molecule and virulence factor in certain bacterial infections. Here, we report the rational, structure-guided identification of potent, nanomolar affinity inhibitors acting on an L-lactate-specific SLC16 homologue from the bacterium Syntrophobacter fumaroxidans (SfMCT). High-resolution crystal structures of SfMCT with bound inhibitors uncovered their interaction mechanism on an atomic level and the role of water molecules in inhibitor binding. The presented systematic approach is a valuable procedure for the identification of L-lactate transport inhibitors.
