The authors discuss a study by Steiner and Redish which demonstrate that neural signals related to regret are encoded in orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and ventral striatum in rats when making an economic decision task. They state that the OFC and ventral striatum encode the expected outcomes during economic decision-making. They say that OFC and ventral striatum activity also represents missed opportunities at foraging task that are cleverly designed to elicit regret in rats.
