Arctic coasts constitute the critical interface between land and sea, and are subject to rapid changes caused by a warming climate. Current trends throughout the Arctic show increasing erosion trends, while other parts of the coast are experiencing prograding trends. Until now, a vast majority of our knowledge of Arctic coastal evolution is confined to site-specific studies with limited geospatial representation. Here, we present DeltaCAN, a novel data set on the locations of Canadian deltas larger than 500 m in width derived by visual interpretation of freely available satellite imagery. DeltaCAN is Canada's first nationwide coastal detection covering 250.000 km of coastline in the Arctic, identifying 2712 deltas. The inventory is based on inspection of remotely-sensed satellite imageries, developed through an expert-based mapping approach where we implemented a quality control mechanism to assess the completeness of the data set. Introduction: How we perceive social-sexual behavior, and to what extent we consider such behavior to be sexual harassment, is dependent on several situational factors. Prototypical #MeToo features (male actor and female target, higher status, repeated, private behavior, sexualized physical contact) have previously been shown to increase the degree to which social-sexual behavior is perceived as sexual harassment. The effect of those features needs to be investigated for types of harassment that involve same-gender sexual harassment and harassment of LGBTQ + people. To gain a wider perspective on the perception of social-sexual behavior as sexual harassment, this preregistered study aims to examine same-gender interactions and lesbian and gay actors and targets, in addition to replicating earlier findings about #MeToo features in opposite-sex constellations. Methods: We applied five hypothetical scenarios to a Norwegian online sample of 888 participants between 18 and 60 (58.3% cis women, 40.8% cis men, 0.9% transgender/genderfluid/non-binary). The sampling process took place during the spring term 2020 and aimed at recruiting LGBTQ + people (63.3% of the sample self-identifying as heterosexual, 20% gay/lesbian, 10.7% bisexual, 3.2% pansexual, and 1.9% "other"). Results: #MeToo features in each scenario clearly increased the degree to which social-sexual behavior was perceived as sexual harassment across gender identity and sexual orientation. The effect of private vs. public behavior was contingent on the type of behavior. Men rated behavior less as sexual harassment than women and people of other gender identities. Conclusions: The current study shows that there was considerable consensus as to what sexual harassment entails in the five scenarios across gender identity and sexual orientation. Policy Implications: Organizations should include prototypical #MeToo features in interventions, to illustrate how a situation might be more or less undesired and therefore experienced as harassment under different circumstances. Macrolides are widely used antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial airway infections. Due to its elevated minimum inhibitory concentration in standardized culture media, Pseudomonas aeruginosa is considered intrinsically resistant and, therefore, antibiotic susceptibility testing against macrolides is not performed. Nevertheless, due to macrolides’ immunomodulatory effect and suppression of virulence factors, they are used for the treatment of persistent P. aeruginosa infections. Here, we demonstrate that macrolides are, instead, effective antibiotics against P. aeruginosa airway infections in an Air-Liquid Interface (ALI) infection model system resembling the human airways. Importantly, macrolide treatment in both people with cystic fibrosis and primary ciliary dyskinesia patients leads to the accumulation of uL4 and uL22 ribosomal protein mutations in P. aeruginosa which causes antibiotic resistance. Consequently, higher concentrations of antibiotics are needed to modulate the macrolide-dependent suppression of virulence. Surprisingly, even in the absence of antibiotics, these mutations also lead to a collateral reduction in growth rate, virulence and pathogenicity in airway ALI infections which are pivotal for the establishment of a persistent infection. Altogether, these results lend further support to the consideration of macrolides as de facto antibiotics against P. aeruginosa and the need for resistance monitoring upon prolonged macrolide treatment.In this work, authors show that macrolides are effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections despite intrinsic resistance. Purpose We aimed to quantify perioperative changes in diaphragmatic function and phrenic nerve conduction in patients undergoing routine thoracic surgery. Methods A prospective observational study was performed in patients undergoing esophageal resection or pulmonary lobectomy. Examinations were carried out the day prior to surgery, 3 days and 10–14 days after surgery. Endpoints for diaphragmatic function included ultrasonographic measurements of diaphragmatic excursion and thickening fraction. Endpoints for phrenic nerve conduction included baseline-to-peak amplitude, peak-to-peak amplitude, and transmission delay. Measurements were assessed on both the surgical side and the non-surgical side of the thorax. Results Forty patients were included in the study. Significant reductions in diaphragmatic excursion were seen on the surgical side of the thorax for all excursion measures (posterior part of the right hemidiaphragm, p<0.001; hemidiaphragmatic top point, p<0.001; change in intrathoracic area, p<0.001). Significant changes were seen for all phrenic nerve measures (baseline-to-peak amplitude, p<0.001; peak-to-peak amplitude, p<0.001; transmission delay, p=0.041) on the surgical side. However, significant changes were also seen on the non-surgical side for all phrenic nerve measures (baseline-to-peak amplitude, p<0.001; peak-to-peak amplitude, p<0.001; transmission delay, p=0.022). A postoperative reduction in posterior diaphragmatic excursion of more than 50% was significantly associated with postoperative pulmonary complications (coefficient: 2.69 (95% CI [1.38, 4.01], p<0.001). Conclusion Thoracic surgery caused a significant unilateral reduction in diaphragmatic excursion on the surgical side of the thorax, which was accompanied by significant changes in phrenic nerve conduction. However, phrenic nerve conduction was also significantly affected on the non-surgical side to a lesser extent, which was not mirrored in diaphragmatic excursion. Our findings suggest that phrenic nerve paresis plays a role in postoperative diaphragmatic dysfunction, which may be a contributing factor in the pathogenesis of postoperative pulmonary complications. It is often assumed that rendering an alert signal more salient yields faster responses to this alert. Yet, there might be a trade-off between attracting attention and distracting from task execution. Here we tested this in four behavioral experiments with eye-tracking using an abstract alert-signal paradigm. Participants performed a visual discrimination task (primary task) while occasional alert signals occurred in the visual periphery accompanied by a congruently lateralized tone. Participants had to respond to the alert before proceeding with the primary task. When visual salience (contrast) or auditory salience (tone intensity) of the alert were increased, participants directed their gaze to the alert more quickly. This confirms that more salient alerts attract attention more efficiently. Increasing auditory salience yielded quicker responses for the alert and primary tasks, apparently confirming faster responses altogether. However, increasing visual salience did not yield similar benefits: instead, it increased the time between fixating the alert and responding, as high-salience alerts interfered with alert-task execution. Such task interference by high-salience alert-signals counteracts their more efficient attentional guidance. The design of alert signals must be adapted to a "sweet spot" that optimizes this stimulus-dependent trade-off between maximally rapid attentional orienting and minimal task interference. The human auditory system is believed to represent regularities inherent in auditory information in internal models. Sounds not matching the standard regularity (deviants) elicit prediction error, alerting the system to information not explainable within currently active models. Here, we examine the widely neglected characteristic of deviants bearing predictive information themselves. In a modified version of the oddball paradigm, using higher-order regularities, we set up different expectations regarding the sound following a deviant. Higher-order regularities were defined by the relation of pitch within tone pairs (rather than absolute pitch of individual tones). In a deviant detection task participants listened to oddball sequences including two deviant types following diametrically opposed rules: one occurred mostly in succession (high repetition probability) and the other mostly in isolation (low repetition probability). Participants in Experiment 1 were not informed (naïve), whereas in Experiment 2 they were made aware of the repetition rules. Response times significantly decreased from first to second deviant when repetition probability was high—albeit more in the presence of explicit rule knowledge. There was no evidence of a facilitation effect when repetition probability was low. Significantly more false alarms occurred in response to standards following high compared with low repetition probability deviants, but only in participants aware of the repetition rules. These findings provide evidence that not only deviants violating lower- but also higher-order regularities can inform predictions about auditory events. DNA methylation is important for gene expression and alterations in DNA methylation are involved in the development and progression of cancer and other major diseases. Analysis of DNA methylation patterns has until now been dependent on either a chemical or an enzymatic pre-treatment, which are both time consuming procedures and potentially biased due to incomplete treatment. We present a qPCR technology, EpiDirect®, that allows for direct PCR quantification of DNA methylations using untreated DNA. EpiDirect® is based on the ability of Intercalating Nucleic Acids (INA®) to differentiate between methylated and unmethylated cytosines in a special primer design. With this technology, we develop an assay to analyze the methylation status of a region of the MGMT promoter used in treatment selection and prognosis of glioblastoma patients. We compare the assay to two bisulfite-relying, methyl-specific PCR assays in a study involving 42 brain tumor FFPE samples, revealing high sensitivity, specificity, and the clinical utility of the method. Analysis of DNA methylation usually requires a chemical or an enzymatic pretreatment step. Here, the authors report a PCR-based technology for the detection of DNA methylation in untreated DNA, and present analytical and clinical results from methylation analysis of the MGMT promoter. Recent cross-cultural and neuro-hormonal investigations have suggested that love is a near universal phenomenon that has a biological background. Therefore, the remaining important question is not whether love exists worldwide but which cultural, social, or environmental factors influence experiences and expressions of love. In the present study, we explored whether countries' modernization indexes are related to love experiences measured by three subscales (passion, intimacy, commitment) of the Triangular Love Scale. Analyzing data from 9474 individuals from 45 countries, we tested for relationships with country-level predictors, namely, modernization proxies (i.e., Human Development Index, World Modernization Index, Gender Inequality Index), collectivism, and average annual temperatures. We found that mean levels of love (especially intimacy) were higher in countries with higher modernization proxies, collectivism, and average annual temperatures. To investigate whether the location, area and frequency of referred sensations occurring during palpation of the masseter muscle can be influenced by application of a conditioning painful stimulus to the temporalis muscle. Thirty healthy participants were included in this cross-over study, performed in two sessions with > 48 h in between. At each session, palpation of the masseter muscle was performed before and after 0.2 ml of glutamate (1 mol/L) or isotonic saline (control) were injected into the anterior portion of the temporalis muscle. Palpation of the masseter muscle was done using four different forces (0.5 kg, 1 kg, 2 kg and 4 kg). Participants rated the perceived intensity of the palpation and any referred sensations on a 0–50–100 numeric rating scale, the perceived pain intensity following the injections on an electronic visual analogue scale and drew any referred sensations they experienced. No difference in referred sensations location, area and frequency was shown r during palpation either before or after injections (P > 0.05). A moderate correlation was found between perceived sensation scores and referred sensations intensity for the temporalis muscle following glutamate injection (r = 0.407, P < 0.05). Moreover, significantly more participants reported referred sensations for glutamate injections into the temporalis muscle when compared to isotonic saline (P < 0.05). Finally, a significant decrease in the perceived intensity of palpation of the masseter muscle was seen after glutamate injection in the temporalis muscle (P < 0.05). In the current study, location, area and frequency of referred sensations following mechanical stimulation of the masseter muscle were not altered by the application of a painful stimulus to the temporalis muscle. Humans achieve skilled actions by continuously correcting for motor errors or perceptual misjudgments, a process called sensorimotor adaptation. This can occur with the actor both detecting (explicitly) and not detecting the error (implicitly). We investigated how the magnitude of a perturbation and the corresponding error signal each contribute to the detection of a size perturbation during interaction with real-world objects. Participants grasped cuboids of different lengths in a mirror-setup allowing us to present different sizes for seen and felt cuboids, respectively. Visuo-haptic size mismatches (perturbations) were introduced either abruptly or followed a sinusoidal schedule. These schedules dissociated the error signal from the visuo-haptic mismatch: Participants could fully adapt their grip and reduce the error when a perturbation was introduced abruptly and then stayed the same, but not with a constantly changing sinusoidal perturbation. We compared participants’ performance in a two-alternative forced choice (2AFC) task where participants judged these mismatches, and modelled error-correction in grasping movements by looking at changes in maximum grip apertures, measured using motion tracking. We found similar mismatch-detection performance with sinusoidal perturbation schedules and the first trial after an abrupt change, but decreasing performance over further trials for the latter. This is consistent with the idea that reduced error signals following adaptation make it harder to detect perturbations. Error-correction parameters indicated stronger error-correction in abruptly introduced perturbations. However, we saw no correlation between error-correction and overall mismatch-detection performance. Worldwide the increase in multi-resistant bacteria due to misuse of traditional antibiotics is a growing threat for our health. Finding alternatives to traditional antibiotics is thus timely. Probiotic bacteria have numerous beneficial effects and could offer safer alternatives to traditional antibiotics. Here, we use the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) to screen a library of different lactobacilli to identify potential probiotic bacteria and characterize their mechanisms of action. We show that pretreatment with the Lactobacillus spp. Lb21 increases lifespan of C. elegans and results in resistance towards pathogenic methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Using genetic analysis, we find that Lb21-mediated MRSA resistance is dependent on the DBL-1 ligand of the TGF-β signaling pathway in C. elegans. This response is evolutionarily conserved as we find that Lb21 also induces the TGF-β pathway in porcine epithelial cells. We further characterize the host responses in an unbiased proteome analysis and identify 474 proteins regulated in worms fed Lb21 compared to control food. These include fatty acid CoA synthetase ACS-22, aspartic protease ASP-6 and vitellogenin VIT-2 which are important for Lb21-mediated MRSA resistance. Thus, Lb21 exerts its probiotic effect on C. elegans in a multifactorial manner. In summary, our study establishes a mechanistic basis for the antimicrobial potential of lactobacilli. Sex differences in jealousy responses to sexual and emotional infidelity are robust in samples of heterosexual adults, especially in more gender egalitarian nations. However, investigations of when and how these differences develop have been scant. We applied two forced choice infidelity scenarios in a large community sample of high school students (age 16–19, N = 1266). In line with previous findings on adults using the forced choice paradigm, adolescent males found the sexual aspect of imagined infidelity more distressing than adolescent females did. Nevertheless, there was no effect of age on the jealousy responses, and age did not moderate the sex difference. There were neither any effects of three covariates (having had first sexual intercourse, being in a committed romantic relationship, and sociosexuality), neither as markers of pubertal maturation nor as psychosocial environmental stimuli. Future research needs to investigate even younger samples in order to specify at what age the sex difference in jealousy responses emerges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The #MeToo movement has to a large degree addressed a specific type of sexual harassment, focusing on quid pro quo over hostile environment type sexual harassment. Prototypical #MeToo features include male over female actor; superior over subordinate actor; repeated over single case harassment; private over public settings; personal over general targets and sexualized over non-sexualized physical contact. We predict that these prototypical #MeToo features that gained attention during the campaign will increase peoples' perception of which social-sexual behaviors are considered to be sexual harassment. Predictions were tested in a sample of 489 Norwegian participants (66% women). The results suggest that men tend to rate female actions as less harassing than male actions, while women did not make such a difference. We also observed a bias toward prototypical types of sexual harassment, as people perceive these more as sexual harassment compared to less prototypical but equally harmful types. Smartphone use in learning environments can be productive or distracting depending upon the type of use. The use is also impacted by the learner's view and understanding of the smartphone and self-regulated learning skills. Measures are needed to specify uses and learner understandings to address the implications for teaching and learning. This study reports on the development of a multi-factor inventory designed to measure multitasking while studying, avoiding distractions while studying, mindful phone use, and phone knowledge. The inventory was completed by 514 undergraduate students enrolled in a first-year seminar. The results indicate good reliability and a three-factor structure with multitasking and avoiding distraction merging into one factor. Purpose: Permanent supportive housing (PSH) is an effective intervention to improve residential stability and reduce the utilization of costlier healthcare services for the chronically homeless. However, there has been little focus on health-related quality of life (HRQL) once they enter PSH, and the potential influence of other factors including the PSH model. Study results can shed light on the HRQL of the PSH population and inform strategies to improve PSH program effectiveness in this area. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, survey methods were used to assess the HRQL of PSH residents in the Chicago metropolitan area. The survey also included questions on socio-demographics, health behaviors, housing and neighborhood characteristics, and housing satisfaction. The SF-36 was used to obtain physical (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) scores for HRQL. Other variables were selected using the Wilson and Cleary HRQL model. Statistical analyses included summary statistics, bivariate analyses, and fully adjusted linear regression models. Results: The study sample included 855 adults currently in PSH. The sample was predominantly African American men with an average age of 53 years. Mean scores for PCS and MCS were 39.4 and 46.1, respectively, (out of 100). In adjusted analyses, older age and being on disability were associated with worse PCS. Having HIV was associated with better PCS. Being non-Hispanic Black, living in fixed-sited housing, and being in PSH for longer durations were associated with better MCS. More depressive symptoms was associated with worse PCS and MCS. Conclusion: While both aspects of the PSH model (housing configuration and service provision) were initially associated with HRQL in unadjusted analyses, housing configuration was the only PSH model variable that remained significant once accounting for other factors. Depressive symptomology and the social environment also appear to be important correlates of HRQL and are potential areas to target in PSH programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Handling of unavailable prescriptions, i.e. prescriptions missing on the online server, is considered troublesome and time-consuming by community pharmacy staff and may result in both patient dissatisfaction and non-compliance. Objective To describe the occurrence and reasons for unavailable prescriptions at Danish community pharmacies as well as the types of drugs involved. Method An online 11-item questionnaire was developed and distributed to 24 community pharmacies across Denmark which each collected data on unavailable prescriptions handled within a 3-week period. Results Out of 194,358 prescriptions dispensed during the study period, a total of 2765 (1.4%) unavailable prescriptions were registered. Of these, 51.1% (n = 1412) occurred when a patient expected a new prescription after having consulted a physician, most often the patient's general practitioner (75.6%; n = 1067). Of all unavailable prescriptions, 68.1% (n = 1882) concerned prescriptions on regular drugs for treatment of a chronic condition, with the patient not having any medication left in 27.9% (n = 526) of these cases. Unavailable prescriptions most frequently concerned cardiovascular drugs (15.8%; n = 437) followed by nervous system drugs (14.4%; n = 399). Conclusion Unavailable prescriptions occur in approximately 1% of all dispensing at Danish community pharmacies. High-resolution shallow seismic data, sediment core information, radiocarbon dating and sequence stratigraphy have been used to interpret the late glacial to early Holocene geological evolution of Hesselø Bay in the southern Kattegat, Denmark. A reconstruction of the early Holocene coastal environment and a description of coastal processes associated with a river outlet into the bay are presented. Weichselian glacial deposits form the lowermost interpreted unit, covered by late glacial (LG) and postglacial (PG, Holocene) sediments. A funnel-shaped estuary existed at the mouth of channels in the period 10.3-9.2 cal. ka BP; the channels drained water from south to north. The early PG is characterised by estuarine and coastal deposits. The early Holocene bars that developed in the estuary are preserved as morphological features on the present-day seabed, possibly as a result of rapid relative sea-level rise. The estuary existed simultaneously with the occurrence and drainage of the Ancylus Lake. The drainage of this lake occurred through the Dana River (palaeo-Great Belt channel) into the southern Kattegat and then into the study area. The level of the Ancylus Lake in the Baltic Sea region dropped significantly at about 10.2 cal. ka BP at the same time as the estuary developed in the Kattegat region. One outcome of the present study is an enhanced understanding of the Ancylus Lake drainage path. No evidence of major erosion is seen, which indicates non-catastrophic continuous water flow from the south without major drainage events of the Ancylus Lake to the southern Kattegat. During the Littorina transgression, coastal estuarine conditions characterized the Hesselø Bay area where elongated ridges formed a bar system. As the Littorina transgression continued, back-stepping of the bar system and coastline occurred. Climate changes are pronounced in Arctic regions and increase the vulnerability of the Arctic coastal zone. For example, increases in melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet and reductions in sea ice and permafrost distribution are likely to alter coastal morphodynamics. The deltas of Greenland are largely unaffected by human activity, but increased freshwater runoff and sediment fluxes may increase the size of the deltas, whereas increased wave activity in ice-free periods could reduce their size, with the net impact being unclear until now. Here we show that southwestern Greenland deltas were largely stable from the 1940s to 1980s, but prograded (that is, sediment deposition extended the delta into the sea) in a warming Arctic from the 1980s to 2010s. Our results are based on the areal changes of 121 deltas since the 1940s, assessed using newly discovered aerial photographs and remotely sensed imagery. We find that delta progradation was driven by high freshwater runoff from the Greenland Ice Sheet coinciding with periods of open water. Progradation was controlled by the local initial environmental conditions (that is, accumulated air temperatures above 0 °C per year, freshwater runoff and sea ice in the 1980s) rather than by local changes in these conditions from the 1980s to 2010s at each delta. This is in contrast to a dominantly eroding trend of Arctic sedimentary coasts along the coastal plains of Alaska, Siberia and western Canada, and to the spatially variable patterns of erosion and accretion along the large deltas of the main rivers in the Arctic. Our results improve the understanding of Arctic coastal evolution in a changing climate, and reveal the impacts on coastal areas of increasing ice mass loss and the associated freshwater runoff and lengthening of open-water periods. A wide range of delta morphologies occurs along the fringes of the Young Sound in Northeast Greenland due to spatial heterogeneity of delta regimes. In general, the delta regime is related to catchment and basin characteristics (geology, topography, drainage pattern, sediment availability, and bathymetry), fluvial discharges and associated sediment load, and processes by waves and currents. Main factors steering the Arctic fluvial discharges into the Young Sound are the snow and ice melt and precipitation in the catchment, and extreme events like glacier lake outburst floods (GLOFs). Waves are subordinate and only rework fringes of the delta plain forming sandy bars if the exposure and fetch are optimal. Spatial gradients and variability in driving forces (snow and precipitation) and catchment characteristics (amount of glacier coverage, sediment characteristics) as well as the strong and local influence of GLOFs in a specific catchment impede a simple upscaling of sediment fluxes from individual catchments toward a total sediment flux into the Young Sound. Background: Outcomes after redo fundoplication (RF) in recurrent gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are debatable, and they may include lower success rates with higher postoperative morbidity and mortality than outcomes after primary fundoplication (PF). However, data from large, nationwide studies are not available. Accordingly, the aim of the present study was to evaluate nationwide Danish data on RF in a nine-year period.Method: Data in the period from 1997 through 2005 were extracted from the National Patient Register. The following information was procured: frequency of RF, rate of conversion to open surgery, rate of complications requiring reoperation, and 30-day mortality. Data for RF were compared to PF.Results: A total of 2589 fundoplications were performed in 2465 patients. Thus, 113 patients underwent a total of 124 RF (RF rate = 5.0%). Most RF (84.7%) were performed at high-volume departments. Patients who underwent RF were converted to open surgery more often (16.1% vs. 6.1% in PF) (P < 0.0001). The median postoperative hospital stay was 3 days after RF and 2 days after PF (P = 0.96). Following RF 1.6% of the patients had complications requiring surgery compared with 1.3% after PF (P = 0.79), and 30-day mortality was 0.81% after RF compared with 0.45% after PF (P = 0.57).Conclusion: This nationwide Danish study showed a low rate of redo fundoplication and a similar morbidity and mortality rate after redo surgery compared with that of primary surgery. Deleted in bladder cancer 1 (DBC1) is a tumour suppressor which is involved in the regulation of cell growth and programmed cell death. In this study we report the cloning and characterization of porcine DBC1 cDNA. RT-PCR cloning produced a cDNA with an open reading frame of 2,283 bp encoding a polypeptide of 761 amino acids with a predicted molecular mass of 88.6 kDa and estimated isoelectric point of 9.1. The encoded pig DBC1 protein shows a very high amino acid similarity to human (99 %) and to mouse (98 %) DBC1. The porcine DBC1 gene was mapped to chromosome 1. The nucleotide sequence of the promoter displayed a high degree of conservation of elements responsible for neuron-specific expression. The porcine DBC1 gene was found to be highly expressed in brain tissues. The methylation status of the porcine DBC1 gene was examined in brain and liver by bisulfite sequencing. Methylation percentages of 53-61 were observed for the gene body whereas significantly lower values (1-4 %) were found in exon 1 and the promoter sequence of DBC1. The sequences of the porcine DBC1 cDNA and the DBC1 promoter and exon 1 sequence have been submitted to DDBJ/EMBL/GenBank under the accession numbers KF733442 and KJ396193, respectively.
