Water is one of the most basic necessities of humans, both for survival and environmental improvement. With the ongoing population growth and climate change, limited water resources are being consumed rapidly. Due to the rapid depletion of resources, the problem of water scarcity is also becoming increasingly common throughout the world. In this study, we analyze the current water potential of Marmaris, which is one of the important tourism regions of Türkiye. We aim to determine for how long the water resources will be sufficient to supply the region, along with its relationship with population and urbanization. To conduct these analyses, the population projections (winter population and tourist population) were calculated using the exponential regression method, and the amount of water needed by these populations was also calculated. A controlled classification method was used to associate land use data with population projections. As a result of these analyses, it has been determined that urbanization in Marmaris is much faster than population growth, and the existing water resources will be sufficient until approximately 2045. Forest fires caused by the extreme temperature brought on by climate change are the source of problems such as flood disasters and erosion in terms of changing the natural soil cover in that region. In this study, the effects of soil loss and flooding caused by the fire disaster that occurred in the Icmeler town of Marmaris, one of the world's most popular touristic cities, were investigated. The study was carried out under three main methods. First, the affected terrain was determined by remote sensing methods. Then, soil loss was investigated by RUSLE method using satellite images after the fire disaster. Finally, using the SCS-CN precipitation-flow model method, the impact of the land change brought on by the fires on the flood magnitudes was investigated. As a result of the study, it was determined that the land change caused by the fires caused problems such as the increase in soil losses in the region as well as the increase in the size of the floods. Objective: To evaluate the concerns the parents have with the development of their children and related conditions and investigate how often these concerns are addressed at all levels of the healthcare system. Determining parental perceptions of these issues and highlighting missed opportunities is valuable for improving healthcare services. Methods: A total of 451 parents attending a medical appointment for their children in outpatient clinics at tertiary, secondary and primary health centers were administered a questionnaire comprised of 45 questions pertaining to their concerns regarding the development of their children and related conditions, including sociodemographic characteristics, practices supporting child development, information resources and personal opinions, such as whether they had sufficient information. Results: The parents of 130 children (28.8%) reported at least one developmental concern. Less than half of the concerned parents had visited a health center for these concerns. The area of greatest concern was language development, but the concerns differed based on setting. Among the related factors, having insufficient information (p = 0.000, OR: 0.375, CI: 0.24–0.58) and not playing with the child (p = 0.029, OR: 0.563, CI: 0.33–0.94) increased the risk of having developmental concerns. Only 15.5% of children were followed up in a developmental and behavioral manner. Conclusions: The authors observed many concerns and missed opportunities to address them at all levels of health centers. Family physicians were more effective at eliciting these issues than pediatricians. These issues need to be addressed in the health system with consideration of its complexity and integrated culture. In recent years, it has been difficult to establish a supply-demand balance between urban growth, increasing population, and existing water resources in many countries. In this study, the Bodrum Peninsula, which is an important tourism center for Turkey, was examined in terms of the relationship between the urban growth of the peninsula, population projections, the need for drinking and potable water, and the availability of the existing water resources. Using the Geographic Information System, it has been determined that the urban growth of the peninsula increased by 11.36% between 1985 and 2010. Urban growth is mostly concentrated in the coastal areas where 2 houses are densely built. The population is expected to increase approximately six times between 2010 and 2060. The amount of drinking and potable water required according to the population projection is 12.38, 26.50, 69.12, and 109.50 hm3/year for 2010, 2030, 2050, and 2060 respectively. The existing water resources of the peninsula will be able to meet the requirements until 2030. In order to meet the water needs of the peninsula until 2055, the Bozalan and Gökçeler dams located nearby as well as the Namnam dam located at mid-range to the peninsular should be built. It is not possible to meet the water needs of the peninsula in 2060 with just the near and medium distance water resources. The purpose of the study is to assess the effect of a novel quorum sensing inhibitor (QSI), coded as 'yd 47', against otitis media and biofilm formation on Cochlear implants (CIs). Small pieces cut from cochlear implant were implanted under the skin in the retroauricular area on both sides of four guinea pigs. The implant pieces in the study and control sides were implanted in Streptococcus pneumoniae strain solution and saline, respectively. The right and left middle ears were also instilled with a solution containing pneumococci and saline, respectively. The animals were only given an intraperitoneal 'yd 47' twice daily for three months to be assessed later with electron microscopy. Clinical examination with palpation, inspection and otoscopy did not reveal any sign of implant infection or otitis media. In the study and control implant materials, soft tissues around the implant and tympanic membranes, there was no biofilm formation by pneumococci. Contamination by various cells and some rod-shaped bacteria (not diplococcic) were seen in some of the materials. In conclusion, the novel QSI seems promising in the prevention of otitis media and biofilm formation on CIs by pneumococci. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our aim was to assess the effects of polylactic acid (PLA) on middle ear mucosa and cochlea, to be used as a film barrier for postoperative adhesion prevention in the middle ear. Twenty-one albino Guinea pigs were included in the study. A window was opened on both tympanic bulla and on one side PLA material was placed in the middle ear and on the other side only fenestration was performed and used as a control. All Guinea pigs underwent evaluation of tympanic membranes microscopically; functional hearing was analyzed by auditory brainstem responses preoperatively, in the first and the sixth month. All Guinea pigs were killed on the sixth month for histopathologic evaluation of their temporal bones. There was no statistical difference between both groups regarding hearing thresholds, interpeak wave latencies preoperatively and on first and the sixth months postoperatively. Histopathological evaluation revealed no specific changes. There was a mild local inflammation both in the PLA implanted and control ears. PLA film barrier most likely has no toxic effects on Guinea pig middle ear and does not show any ototoxic side effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the present study is to investigate the role of Helicobacter pylori in olfactory function. Thirty-six patients (mean age 38.5) aged between 18 and 55 years who were diagnosed with H. pylori by gastric biopsies and age- and sex-matched 30 healthy adults (mean age 33.6) were included in the study. All participants underwent a detailed ear-nose-throat examination including endoscopic examination of the nasal cavity and laryngeal area, and olfactory tests were performed using the Sniffin' Sticks, a 12-item screening test (Sniffin'Sticks; Burghart, Wedel, Germany) and odor scores were recorded. The mean odor score was 7.9 ± 1.7 (range 2-10) in the patient group and 10.3 ± 1.4 (range 6-12) in the control group. There were significant lower scores in the patient group compared to the control group ( p < 0.05). In conclusion, it is apparent that there is an association of H. pylori infection with olfactory dysfunction. H. pylori infection should be considered as possible etiological factors in patients with olfactory dysfunction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To assess expression of three main inflammatory genes, COX-II, ALOX-12 and i-NOS, quantitatively at transcriptional level in cholesteatoma matrix tissue. Ten patients who have chronic otitis media with primary acquired cholesteatoma were included in this study. Tissue samples obtained from cholesteatoma matrix and external ear canal skin (control tissue). Expression of the targeted genes (COX-II, i-NOS and LOX-12) was assessed using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique. The amount of COX2 mRNA was significantly higher in cholesteatoma matrix at transcriptional level ( p = 0.038). There was no statistically significant difference regarding expression of iNOS and LOX12 mRNA levels ( p > 0.05). There is a significant overexpression of the mRNA of COX-II in cholesteatoma matrix, which indicates a difference between the normal skin and cholesteatoma matrix at molecular level. COX-II gene overexpression seems to be associated with pathogenesis of cholesteatoma. This molecular change is similar to the molecular abnormalities observed in some benign and malignant neoplasms. Invasive and locally destructive nature of cholesteatoma may be due to COX-II overexpression. Absence of an increase in the gene expressions of i-NOS and LOX-12 in cholesteatoma matrix suggests that these mediators may not be related with the pathogenesis and evolution of cholesteatoma. In this study, we aimed to compare the outcomes of satisfaction of the patients who used hearing aids preceding the vibrant sound bridge (VSB) application on middle ear windows (14 oval window and 5 round window). Nineteen adult patients with conductive or mixed hearing loss were included in the study. All patients used behind the ear hearing aids on the site which was selected for VSB application. The patients used hearing aids for at least 3 months before the VSB operation. The floating mass transducer (FMT) was placed on one of the middle ear windows (oval or round) in VSB operation. The patients were evaluated with International Outcome Inventory for Hearing Aids (IOI-HA) preoperatively after at least 3 months trial of conventional hearing aid and postoperatively after 3 months use of VSB. No perioperative problem was encountered. The total score of IOI-HA was significantly higher with VSB compared with conventional hearing aids ( p < 0.05). No statistically significant difference was found between the daily use, residual activity limitations, satisfaction, impact on others, quality of life between middle ear implant and hearing aid ( p > 0.05). The IOI-HA scores were significantly higher with the middle ear implant than the conventional hearing aid regarding benefit and residual participation restrictions ( p < 0.05). Although the scores for quality of life assessment was similar between VSB and hearing aid use, there was a superiority of VSB in terms of benefit and residual participation restrictions as well as overall IOI-HA scores as the FMT was placed on one of the middle ear windows. The objective of this study is to determine the clinical characteristics and to evaluate the treatment options of intractable neck involvement in tularemia. The medical records of 19 tularemia patients with neck involvement were reviewed retrospectively. On physical examination, fluctuation indicating an abscess formation was detected in 78.9% of the patients. Bilateral involvement was seen in 15.8% of the patients. The most common clinical form was glandular form (63.1%). The most commonly involved lymph node group was upper jugular nodes (78.6%). Six patients underwent incision and drainage procedure, five patients underwent superselective neck dissection and eight patients had only medical treatment. Complete and immediate cure, and better tissue healing with less scarring could be achieved in all patients who underwent superselective neck dissections. In conclusion, intractable neck masses and an abscess can be the initial finding in tularemia, and a high index of suspicion is needed in the differential diagnosis. Superselective neck dissection is a safe and effective option in the treatment of long lasting cervical tularemia unless it responds to medical treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
