(E)-β-carotene and three mono-(Z)-isomers (9(Z)-, 13(Z)-, 15(Z)-) were eluted isocratically on a VYDAC 201TP54 column, using column temperatures between +30°C and −7°C. In this temperature range, their elution order changed dramatically with decreasing temperature. Nearly baseline separation of the four isomers within one hour was achieved at −7°C. For laboratory routine, temperatures of 9±2°C can be recommended. Thus, a good resolution of β-carotene- and lycopene-isomers (e.g. in tomato products) within 30 minutes is possible. The antioxidant activity and the total phenolics content of various tea extracts were analysed. Green and black tea were brewed from 0.5 min up to 10 min under different brewing conditions (stirring the extract, chopping the tea leaves before brewing). For measuring the antioxidant activity, the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) test and the low density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation test were used. In all cases the antioxidant activity as well as the content of the phenolics increased with the brewing time. In black tea (brewed without stirring or chopping), the total phenolics increased from 33.8 mg/100 ml after 0.5 min up to 68.4 mg/100 ml after 10 min brewing time. Stirring during brewing led to higher phenolic yields in the extract. Thus, phenolics in stirred black tea ranged from 44.5 mg/100 ml (0.5 min) to 96.7 mg/100 ml (10 min). Chopping the tea leaves resulted in the highest content of phenolics. Antioxidant activity was well correlated with the corresponding total phenolics content. Twenty nine spinal cord injury patients were treated by resection of heterotopic ossification in 41 hips. The average follow-up period after surgery was 4.2 years. The mean time to surgery after injury was 82.1 months. The indications for surgery were seating problems, loss of function, pressure sores and pain. The average preoperative motion in flexion and extension was 21.95°, the average intraoperative motion was 94.51°. The average motion at follow-up evaluation was 82.68°. Clinical relevant recurrence occurred in three patients. Complications excluding recurrence occurred in 10 hips, including deep and superficial wound infections, fracture, aneurysm and pressure ulcer.
