Purpose: Plantar fasciitis (PF) is a main source of heel pain, and only about one-third of patients have bilateral symptomatic involvement, although age, body mass index (BMI), and physical activities are known risk factors. The high prevalence of unilateral involvement is poorly understood. We aimed to assess the potential association between PF and the leg length discrepancy (LLD) in unilateral PF. Methods: A transversal case–control study was conducted from January 2019 to December 2020, including 120 participants allocated to two groups matched by BMI and sex: cases (with a diagnosis of PF; 50 ± 13 years) and control (without foot pain; 40 ± 15 years). For both groups, a difference greater than 0.64 cm in the scanometry determined the criteria for the presence of LLD. Results: The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed an independent association of PF only with age (p < 0.001), and no association with LLD. We did not observe differences in the mean discrepancy (1.37 ± 0.83 cm in the PF group in comparison with 1.13 ± 0.37 cm in the control group, [p > 0.05]) or in the prevalence of LLD between groups (48% [n = 29] in the PF group compared with 42% [n = 25] in the control group, [p > 0.05]). In the PF group, 80% of the participants reported unilateral pain. We observed a higher prevalence of pain in the shorter limb (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Age was the only factor associated with the diagnosis of PF when groups were matched by sex and BMI. LLD was not an independent factor associated with the diagnosis of PF. We used transcriptome sequencing to investigate the hepatic postprandial responses of Rachycentron canadum (cobia), an important commercial fish species. In total, 150 cobia juveniles (50 per tank, triplicate) were fed ad libitum with a commercial diet for 7 days, fasted for 24 h, and fed for 10 min. The liver was sampled 10 min prior to feeding and 30 min, 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 h after the feeding event. Each sample was evaluated in terms of liver fatty acid profile and gene expression. Differential gene expressions were evaluated, focusing on fatty acid synthesis and oxidation pathways. In general, the liver fatty acid profile reflected diet composition. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LC-PUFA) levels increased at 8 to 12 h but decreased at 24 h after the feeding event. A high number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were observed comparing fish that fasted for 8 h with those fasted for 30 min and 24 h, while a reduced number of DEGs was observed comparing individuals who fasted for 30 min compared with those who fasted for 24 h. Similarly, the main differences in the expression of genes related to the fatty acid biosynthesis and oxidation pathways were noticed in individuals who fasted for 8 h compared with those who fasted for 30 min and 24 h. The results suggested that the adequate time to sample the individuals ranged between 8 and 12 h after the meal since, apparently, after 24 h, differential gene expression was not necessarily influenced by food intake. Histamine, an important biological chemical that occurs naturally and mainly in seafood, causes an undesirable inflammatory response when consumed in large amounts. Food and health regulatory bodies around the world limit its concentration, and histamine is usually detected by conventional methods, in slow processes. As an efficient option, Molecular Impression Polymers (MIPs), synthetic structures containing imprinted nanocavities that are capable of specifically re-binding to their target, have been presented. In this work, MIPs were synthesized by the precipitation method, using methacrylic acid as a functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethylmethacrylate as a cross-linking agent, and histamine as a template molecule in a single polymerization step, unlike the complex methodologies that have been disclosed. For comparison purposes, NIP (non-imprinted polymer) was prepared. The physicochemical characterizations for the polymers were made through infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis, whose results qualified the polymer synthesis. The evaluation of the detection and removal of histamine from the MIP and detection in a real sample of tuna containing about 2 mg/100 g, was performed by cyclic voltammetry. The detection limit (LOD) was 0.105 mg/100 g. Therefore, through a simple methodology, it was possible to synthesize an efficient and selective MIP for the detection of histamine in canned tuna. The aim of the present study was to perform morphological and chemical characterizations of microplastics (MPs) found in seawater samples from the coast of the city of Fortaleza (CE) using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Sampling was performed using a neuston sampler. MPs were separated based on the difference in density. MPs with varied morphologies were found. Fibers and fragments were the most abundant (57% and 36.2%, respectively). FTIR, Raman spectroscopy and DSC confirmed the presence of polyurethane and alkyd resin, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyamide blends, thermoplastic rubber and polyester fibers. The main sources of MPs and their relative contribution were fishing activities, food packaging and household products with 55.1%, household laundry with 27.2%, wear of surface coatings with 10.0% and wear of automobile tires with 7.6%. As a result, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene and polyamide are believed to enter the marine environment mainly through fishing activities and debris from food packaging, polyester mainly through domestic sewage contaminated by washing clothes fibers, polyurethane and alkyd resin from the abrasive wear of surface coatings, as well as rubber particles from the wear of the automobile tires. Thus, one may infer that the main sources of MPs in the marine environment on the coast of Fortaleza are anthropogenic activities. Additionally, there is less information on blends and weathered MPs in commercial polymer databases. To date, no specific diagnostic criteria for sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) have been established. We studied 33 pediatric patients with sepsis prospectively and evaluated the level of consciousness, the presence of delirium, electroencephalographic (EEG) findings, and plasma levels of neuron-specific enolase and S100-calcium-binding protein-B. A presumptive diagnosis of SAE was primarily considered in the presence of a decreased level of consciousness and/or delirium (clinical criteria), but specific EEG abnormalities were also considered (EEG criteria). The time course of the biomarkers was compared between groups with and without clinical or EEG criteria. The Functional Status Scale (FSS) was assessed at admission, discharge, and 3–6 months post-discharge. Clinical criteria were identified in 75.8% of patients, EEG criteria in 26.9%, both in 23.1%, and none in 23.1%. Biomarkers did not differ between groups. Three patients had an abnormal FSS at discharge, but no one on follow-up. A definitive diagnostic pattern for SAE remained unclear. Clinical criteria should be the basis for diagnosis, but sedation may be a significant confounder, also affecting EEG interpretation. The role of biomarkers requires a better definition. The diagnosis of SAE in pediatric patients remains a major challenge. New consensual diagnostic definitions and mainly prognostic studies are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cobia (Rachycentron canadum) is a marine teleost species with great productive potential worldwide. However, the genomic information currently available for this species in public databases is limited. Such lack of information hinders gene expression assessments that might bring forward novel insights into the physiology, ecology, evolution, and genetics of this potential aquaculture species. In this study, we report the first de novo transcriptome assembly of R. canadum liver, improving the availability of novel gene sequences for this species. Illumina sequencing of liver transcripts generated 1,761,965,794 raw reads, which were filtered into 1,652,319,304 high-quality reads. De novo assembly resulted in 101,789 unigenes and 163,096 isoforms, with an average length of 950.61 and 1,617.34 nt, respectively. Moreover, we found that 126,013 of these transcripts bear potentially coding sequences, and 125,993 of these elements (77.3%) correspond to functionally annotated genes found in six different databases. We also identified 701 putative ncRNA and 35,414 putative lncRNA. Interestingly, homologues for 410 of these putative lncRNAs have already been observed in previous analyses with Danio rerio, Lates calcarifer, Seriola lalandi dorsalis, Seriola dumerili, or Echeneis naucrates. Finally, we identified 7894 microsatellites related to cobia's putative lncRNAs. Thus, the information derived from the transcriptome assembly described herein will likely assist future nutrigenomics and breeding programs involving this important fish farming species. Photobiomodulation is a non-pharmacological tool widely used to reduce inflammation in many tissues. However, little is known about its effects on the inflammatory response in the aged brain. We conducted the study to examine anti-inflammatory effects of photobiomodulation in aging brains. We used aged rats (20 months old) with control (handled, laser off) or transcranial laser (660 nm wavelength, 100 mW power) treatments for 10 consecutive days and evaluated the level of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, and the expression and activation of intracellular signaling proteins in the cerebral cortex and the hippocampus. Inflammatory analysis showed that aged rats submitted to transcranial laser treatment had increased levels of IL-1alpha and decreased levels of IL-5 in the cerebral cortex. In the hippocampus, the laser treatment increased the levels of IL-1alpha and decreased levels of IL-5, IL-18, and fractalkine. Regarding the intracellular signaling proteins, a reduction in the ERK and p38 expression and an increase in the STAT3 and ERK activation were observed in the cerebral cortex of aged rats from the laser group. In addition, the laser treatment increased the hippocampal expression of p70S6K, STAT3, and p38 of aged rats. Taken together, our data indicate that transcranial photobiomodulation can improve the inflammatory response and the activation of intracellular signaling proteins linked to vascular function and cell survival in the aged brain. Since laser photobiomodulation has been found to enhance brain energy metabolism and cognition, we conducted the first metabolomics study to systematically analyze the metabolites modified by brain photobiomodulation. Aging is often accompanied by cognitive decline and susceptibility to neurodegeneration, including deficits in brain energy metabolism and increased susceptibility of nerve cells to oxidative stress. Changes in oxidative stress and energetic homeostasis increase neuronal vulnerability, as observed in diseases related to brain aging. We evaluated and compared the cortical and hippocampal metabolic pathways of young (4 months old) and aged (20 months old) control rats with those of rats exposed to transcranial near-infrared laser over 58 consecutive days. Statistical analyses of the brain metabolomics data indicated that chronic transcranial photobiomodulation (1) significantly enhances the metabolic pathways of young rats, particularly for excitatory neurotransmission and oxidative metabolism, and (2) restores the altered metabolic pathways of aged rats towards levels found in younger rats, mainly in the cerebral cortex. These novel metabolomics findings may help complement other laser-induced neurocognitive, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects described in the literature. Several strains of free-living amoebae belonging to the genus Acanthamoeba can cause a painful sight-threatening disease of the cornea known as Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK). The numbers of AK cases keep rising worldwide mainly due to an increase in contact lens wearers and lack of hygiene in the maintenance of contact lenses and their cases. We report a case of AK in a healthy young woman admitted to the Hospital de Clinicas in Porto Alegre, southern Brazil. Corneal scrapings were examined for the presence of Acanthamoeba strains. The initial isolate was characterized by morphological and genotypic properties. The isolate belonged to group III according to Pussard and Pons' cyst morphology. Analysis of its 18S rDNA sequence identified the isolate as genotype T4. The T4 genotype is the most commonly reported among keratitis isolates and the most common in environmental samples. Albendazole, an effective broad-spectrum anthelmintic agent, showed unpredictable therapeutic response caused by poor water solubility and slow dissolution rate. Then, novel binary and multicomponent supramolecular systems of two different solid forms of albendazole (I and II) with maltodextrin alone or with glutamic acid were studied as an alternative to improve the oral bioavailability of albendazole. The interactions and effects on the properties of albendazole were studied in solution and solid state. The solid systems were characterized using Raman and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. The solubility measurements, performed in aqueous and simulated gastric fluid, showed that albendazole (form II) was the most soluble form, while its supramolecular systems showed the highest solubility in simulated gastric fluid. On the other hand, the dissolution profiles of binary and multicomponent systems in simulated gastric fluid displayed pronounced increments of the dissolved drug and a faster dissolution rate compared to those of free albendazole forms. Thus, these supramolecular structures constitute an interesting alternative to improve the physicochemical properties of albendazole, with potential application for the preparation of pharmaceutical oral formulations. The increasing use of contact lenses worldwide has led to an increase in cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis, which are often associated with inappropriate cleaning of contact lenses and lens cases. This study aimed to retrospectively review 28 cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis in Porto Alegre (southern Brazil) and identify the risk factors and clinical outcomes of affected patients. Most patients had higher education (66.6%), all were users of contact lenses, mostly women (67.9%). Most patients were soft contact lens wearers (66.7%) and 85.7% used multipurpose cleaning solutions. Sixteen patients (64.0%) used to wear contact lenses while swimming and/or bathing. Pain was the most common symptom (92.6%). For treatment, patients used polyhexamethylene biguanide drops (92.6%), propamidine isethionate drops (81.5%), chlorhexidine drops (55.6%), topical corticosteroids (63.0%), and systemic corticosteroids (37.0%). Herpes simplex keratitis was the most common misdiagnosis (72.7%). The majority of patients (76.0%) underwent a corneal transplant to control the disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the present work was to use agroindustrial wastes as alternative adsorbents for the removal of trihalomethanes (THMs). SEM micrographs of sugar cane bagasse and coconut mesocarp samples showed a high degree of particle agglomeration, with particle sizes of 114.4 ± 74.0 μm, while the sugar cane bagasse particles were larger (557.3 ± 169.5 μm). The pyrogram obtained for sugar cane bagasse revealed the presence of many compounds with different functional groups containing oxygen atoms. In the case of the coconut mesocarp, the range of oxygenated functional groups was smaller. The adsorption processes showed fast kinetics, with equilibrium reached after around 240 min of contact. Adsorption tests revealed different selectivities of the biomass adsorption sites for the THMs. Adsorption percentages obtained with coconut mesocarp ranged from 49.2 ± 2.57 to 71.9 ± 1.88 %, while the values obtained for sugar cane bagasse were between 31.8 ± 1.08 and 67.4 ± 1.27 %. The orders of removal (significant at p < 0.05) were as follows: CHCl>CHBrCl>CHBrCl>CHBr (using sugar cane bagasse) and CHBrCl>CHBrCl>CHCl>CHBr (using coconut mesocarp). Use of the sugar cane bagasse resulted in high removal percentages of chloroform (51.1 %) and dichlorobromoform (42.3 %) in the first 5 min of contact, showing that this biomass had greater affinity for trihalomethane compounds with more chlorine atoms in their structures. Advances in both terrestrial laser scanning hardware and photogrammetric systems combined are creating increasingly precise and rich 3D coloured data. In this article we show how computer graphics and visualization techniques have played an important role in real-time visualization, data management, modelling, and data fusion in an increasing number of applications such as surveying engineering, structure analysis, architecture, archaeology and cultural heritage. Specifically, we describe the typical modelling steps involved in the creation of a range of digital documents provided by the 3D digitization company Artescan to customers. In addition to the strong influence of the broodstock diet on the development and survival of offspring, domestication may also interfere with the larval life success. We obtained eggs from wild and domesticated Salminus hilarii females and domesticated males. Wild females were caught in the Tiete River and tributaries, and the domesticated females were born three years before the beginning of the experiment in the Ponte Nova Fish Farm. Animals from both groups were fed with the same feed to exclude feed variables. The eggs and larvae were sampled at 0, 8, 16, and 28 h after spawning (HAS), with the last sampling (28 HAS) coinciding with hatching time. After hatching, samplings proceeded at 32, 48, 66, and 96 HAS, with the last sampling (96 HAS) corresponding to the end of yolk sac consumption. Finally, the last experimental period was during the larvae exogenous feeding phase, at 102, 118, 166, and 214 HAS. Our data revealed that domestication of S. hilarii females influenced fatty acid (FA) metabolism during embryo and larva development. However, the structure of membrane phospholipid FA remained mostly stable, with changes principally in the neutral fraction. When the external conditions, mainly water and feed quality, remained constant, domestication of S. hilarii females did not significantly affect the structural FA composition but influenced the selectivity of consumption and/or storage of specific FA. Although abdominal cryptococcomas and visceral cryptococcal lymphadenitis as part of disseminated fungal infection have been reported mostly in HIV-infected patients, localized intra-abdominal involvement due to Cryptococcus gattii has not been previously described in non-HIV-infected patients. In general, a smaller proportion of cryptococcosis is caused by C. gattii. We report here on a type II diabetic HIV-negative patient who presented with a localized intra-abdominal cryptococcal mass due to C. gattii. In addition, we review the general aspects of intra-abdominal and gastrointestinal involvement by Cryptococcus neoformans in the literature and discuss the importance of identifying the C. neoformans varieties and C. gattii in routine laboratories. Pre-clinical studies have supported the use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) to treat highly prevalent neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD) but preliminary trials have reported controversial results. In a rat model of PD induced by MPTP neurotoxin, we first observed a significant bilateral preservation of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and prevention of motor deficits typically observed in PD such as hypokinesia, catalepsy, and bradykinesia, following intracerebral administration of human umbilical cord-derived MSC (UC-MSC) early after MPTP injury. However, surprisingly, administration of fibroblasts, mesenchymal cells without stem cell properties, as a xenotransplantation control was highly detrimental, causing significant neurodegeneration and motor dysfunction independently of MPTP. This observation prompted us to further investigate the consequences of transplanting a MSC preparation contaminated with fibroblasts, a plausible circumstance in cell therapy since both cell types display similar immunophenotype and can be manipulated in vitro under the same conditions. Here we show for the first time, using the same experimental model and protocol, that transplantation of UC-MSC induced potent neuroprotection in the brain resulting in clinical benefit. However, co-transplantation of UC-MSC with fibroblasts reverted therapeutic efficacy and caused opposite damaging effects, significantly exacerbating neurodegeneration and motor deficits in MPTP-exposed rats. Besides providing a rationale for testing UC-MSC transplantation in early phases of PD aiming at delaying disease progression, our pre-clinical study suggests that fibroblasts may be common cell contaminants affecting purity of MSC preparations and clinical outcome in stem cell therapy protocols, which might also explain discrepant clinical results. Currently, the design of aesthetic products is a process that requires a set of activities where digital models and physical mockups play a key role. Typically, these are modified (and built) several times before reaching the desired design, increasing the development time and, consequently, the final product cost. In this paper, we present an innovative design environment for computer-aided design (CAD) surface analysis. Our system relies on a direct visuo-haptic display system, which enables users to visualize models using a stereoscopic view, and allows the evaluation of sectional curves using touch. Profile curves are rendered using an haptic device that deforms a plastic strip, thanks to a set of actuators, to reproduce the curvature of the shape co-located with the virtual model. By touching the strip, users are able to evaluate shape characteristics, such as curvature or discontinuities (rendered using sound), and to assess the surface quality. We believe that future computer-aided systems (CAS)/CAD systems based on our approach will contribute in improving the design process at industrial level. Moreover, these will allow companies to reduce the product development time by reducing the number of physical mockups necessary for the product design evaluation and by increasing the quality of the final product, allowing a wider exploration and comparative evaluation of alternatives in the given time. IMMIView is an interactive system that relies on multiple modalities and multi-user interaction to support collaborative design review. It was designed to offer natural interaction in visualization setups such as large-scale displays, head mounted displays or TabletPC computers. To support architectural design, our system provides content creation and manipulation, 3D scene navigation and annotations. Users can interact with the system using laser pointers, speech commands, body gestures and mobile devices. In this paper, we describe how we design a system to answer architectural user requirements. In particular, our system takes advantage of multiple modalities to provide a natural interaction for design review. We also propose a new graphical user interface adapted to architectural user tasks, such as navigation or annotations. The interface relies on a novel stroke-based interaction supported by simple laser pointers as input devices for large-scale displays. Furthermore, input devices such as speech and body tracking allow IMMIView to support multiple users. Moreover, they allow each user to select different modalities according to their preference and modality adequacy for the user task. We present a multi-modal fusion system developed to support multi-modal commands on a collaborative, co-located, environment, i.e. with two or more users interacting at the same time, on the same system. The multi-modal fusion system listens to inputs from all the IMMIView modules in order to model user actions and issue commands. The multiple modalities are fused based on a simple rule-based sub-module developed in IMMIView and presented in this paper. User evaluation performed over IMMIView is presented. The results show that users feel comfortable with the system and suggest that users prefer the multi-modal approach to more conventional interactions, such as mouse and menus, for the architectural tasks presented. This article assesses if innovators outperform non-innovators in Brazilian manufacturing during 1996–2002. To do so, we begin with a simple theoretical model and test the impacts of technological innovation (treatment) on innovating firms (treated) by employing propensity score matching techniques. Correcting for the survivorship bias in the period, it was verified that, on an average, the accomplishment of technological innovations produces positive and significant impacts on the employment, the net revenue, the labor productivity, the capital productivity, and market share of the firms. However, this result was not observed for the mark-up. Especially, the net revenue reflects more robustly the impacts of the innovations. Quantitatively speaking, innovating firms experienced a 10.8–12.5 percentage points (p.p. henceforth) higher growth on employment, a 18.1–21.7 p.p. higher growth on the net revenue, a 10.8–11.9 p.p. higher growth on labor productivity, a 11.8–12.0 p.p. higher growth on capital productivity, and a 19.9–24.3 p.p. higher growth on their market share, relative to the average of the non-innovating firms in the control group. It was also observed that the conjunction of product and process innovations, relative to other forms of innovation, presents the stronger impacts on the performance of Brazilian firms.
