The recently described site of Kalinga in the Philippines adds to our understanding of Early-Middle Pleistocene hominin behaviour. Yet, disentangling the natural from the anthropogenic modifications that have taken place in such an old archaeological site is challenging. In this paper we use a set of taphonomic tools at hand to rectify the distortion made by natural processes during the formation of the Kalinga site. From the description of the ribs completeness, surface damages and scattering in the excavation, one can reconstruct the butchery, transport and deposition sequence of the rhino carcass and its post-depositional disturbances and diagenetic evolution of the site. We conclude that the rhino and the stone artefacts potentially used to deflesh the carcass were transported by a mudflow from its butchery place over a few meters only and got stuck and mixed with an older faunal assemblage that was transported by a small stream. Over 60 years ago, stone tools and remains of megafauna were discovered on the Southeast Asian islands of Flores, Sulawesi and Luzon, and a Middle Pleistocene colonization by Homo erectus was initially proposed to have occurred on these islands [1]- [4]. However, until the discovery of Homo floresiensis in 2003, claims of the presence of archaic hominins on Wallacean islands were hypothetical owing to the absence of in situ fossils and/or stone artefacts that were excavated from well-documented stratigraphic contexts, or because secure numerical dating methods of these sites were lacking. As a consequence, these claims were generally treated with scepticism [5]. Here we describe the results of recent excavations at Kalinga in the Cagayan Valley of northern Luzon in the Philippines that have yielded 57 stone tools associated with an almost-complete disarticulated skeleton of Rhinoceros philippinensis, which shows clear signs of butchery, together with other fossil fauna remains attributed to stegodon, Philippine brown deer, freshwater turtle and monitor lizard. All finds originate from a clay-rich bone bed that was dated to between 777 and 631 thousand years ago using electron-spin resonance methods that were applied to tooth enamel and fluvial quartz. This evidence pushes back the proven period of colonization [6] of the Philippines by hundreds of thousands of years, and furthermore suggests that early overseas dispersal in Island South East Asia by premodern hominins took place several times during the Early and Middle Pleistocene stages [1]- [4]. The Philippines therefore may have had a central role in southward movements into Wallacea, not only of Pleistocene megafauna [7], but also of archaic hominins. Stone tools and a disarticulated and butchered skeleton of Rhinoceros philippinensis, found in a securely dated stratigraphic context, indicate the presence of an unknown hominin population in the Philippines as early as 709 thousand years ago. Summary: The effects of milk intake on bone health are not clear in elderly Asian men with low dietary calcium intake. This study showed that greater milk intake is associated with lower bone turnover, higher bone density, and higher bone microarchitecture index in community-dwelling elderly Japanese men. Introduction: The consumption of milk or dairy products is widely recommended for maintaining bone health regardless of gender or age. However, little evidence exists on the beneficial effects of milk intake on bone health in elderly Japanese men characterized with relatively low dietary calcium intake. Here we examined whether or not greater milk intake was associated with lower bone turnover, higher bone density, and stronger bone microarchitecture in community-dwelling elderly Japanese men. Methods: Interviews were conducted to obtain information on medical history and lifestyle, including the amount of habitual milk intake, nutrient intake calculations based on a 1-week food diary, and measurements of areal bone mineral density (aBMD) at the lumbar spine (LS), total hip (TH), and femoral neck (FN) by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), trabecular bone score (TBS) using DXA images at LS, and biochemical markers of bone turnover in sera. Participants with a history of diseases or medications that affect bone metabolism, or with missing data, were excluded from the analysis. Results: The median intake of milk in the 1479 participants (mean age, 73.0 ± 5.1 years) was one glass of milk per day. Bone turnover markers showed a decreasing trend ( p < 0.05) and aBMD at TH ( p = 0.0019) and FN ( p = 0.0057) and TBS ( p = 0.0017) showed increasing trends with greater milk intake after adjusting for demographic and behavioral confounding factors. This association was attenuated after further adjusting for nutrient intake, in particular, calcium intake. A zinc-resistant bacterium, Brevibacterium sp. strain HZM-1 which shows a high Zn2+-adsorbing capacity, was isolated from the soil of an abandoned zinc mine. Kinetic analyses showed that Zn2+ binding to HZM-1 cells follows Langmuir isotherm kinetics with a maximum metal capacity of 0.64 mmol/g dry cells and an apparent metal dissociation constant of 0.34 mM. The observed metal-binding capacity was one of the highest values among those reported for known microbial Zn2+ biosorbents. The cells could also adsorb heavy metal ions such as Cu2+. HZM-1 cells could remove relatively low levels of the Zn2+ ion (0.1 mM), even in the presence of large excess amounts (total concentration, 10 mM) of alkali and alkali earth metal ions. Bound Zn2+ ions could be efficiently desorbed by treating the cells with 10 mM HCl or 10 mM EDTA, and the Zn2+-adsorbing capacity of the cells was fully restored by treatment of the desorbed cells with 0.1 M NaOH. Thus, HZM-1 cells can serve as an excellent biosorbent for removal of Zn2+ from natural environments. The cells could grow in the presence of significant concentrations of ZnCl2 (at least up to 15 mM) and thus is potentially applicable to in situ bioremediation of Zn2+-contaminated aqueous systems. We report two patients with esophageal carcinoma with high levels of serum parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP). Patient 1 was a 66-year-old man in whom the serum calcium level was also high, and patient 2 was an 81-year-old woman. The serum PTHrP level was 411 pM (normal range, 13.8-55.3pM) in patient 1 and 94.5 pM in patient 2 (in whom the serum granulocyte colony-stimulating factor level was also high). We demonstrated PTHrP immunohistologically in esophageal carcinoma cells in both patients. After admission, patient 1 died of pneumonia on the 17th day of hospitalization (the 48th day after he had had an episode of frequent hiccuping) and patient 2 died of acute circulatory failure on the 12th day of hospitalization (the 25th day after she had vomited after a meal). Neither of these patients died of cancer. Pneumonia in patient 1 was believed to be due to weakened body defenses, while the acute circulatory failure in patient 2 was due to emaciation. Since esophageal carcinoma with humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy and leukocytosis is characterized by rapid progression and metastasis, early diagnosis and treatment are mandatory. An autopsy case of Creutzfeld-Jacob disease with widespread amyloid plaques is reported. A 45-year-old Japanese man, whose father had died of a similar disease, had a 5-year illness characterized by progressive cerebellar signs. Mental changes and brain-stem signs developed in the late stage. Myoclonus frequently occurred. Akinetic mutism ensued. The autopsy revealed spongiform encephalopathy with widespread amyloid plaques and extensive degeneration of the white matter. This disease, Western Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker disease and panencephalopathic type of Creutzfeld-Jacob disease are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An unusual case of recurrent attacks of peculiar twilight state persisting for 41 years is the subject of this clinicopathological report. During the attacks the patient had depersonalization, showing a stiff face, and the electroencephalogram showed constant 5 Hz diffuse theta waves. The unique and characteristic neuropathological finding were many foamy spheroid bodies (FSB) in the substantia nigra which sometimes contained varying numbers of fine or coarse eosinophilic granules. Ultrastructurally, the FSB contained various small electron-dense granules and/or membranous structures quite different from so-called spheroids (axonal swellings). Bodian staining demonstrated that some FSB were situated within the bundles of the neuronal processes, suggesting that the FSB has originated from the degeneration of the axon and/or dendrites in the substantia nigra. Nine cases of sporadic olivopontocerebellar atrophy [Déjérine-Thomas type, multisystemic atrophy (MSA)] were examined histologically and electron microscopically with special reference to the corticopontine tract. Five of nine cases showed degeneration of the myelinated nerve fibres in this tract. More severe degeneration of the fibres at the level of the pons than the crus cerebri indicates that degeneration of the fibres may start axodistally. Electron microscopy revealed selective involvement of large fibres in olivopontocerebellar atrophy, in contrast to unselective axonal atrophy in dentatorubropallidoluysian atrophy. The problem whether the degeneration of the tract is primary or secondary due to the loss of the pontine neurons remains open. We believe the former to be most likely. Degeneration of the corticopontine fibres should be added to the list of neuropathological findings in sporadic olivopontocerebellar atrophy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Massive membranocystic lesions of the lung were found in an autopsy case of Nasu-Hakola disease. The membranocystic structures are virtually identical to those found in adipose tissue, including bone marrow. Capillary endothelia and alveolar epithelial lining cells do not participate in membranous structure formation, these structures being found in the alveolar septa and not apparently of an embolic nature. They may be related to alveolar septal cells in a broad sense. The pathogenesis of this disease is discussed in relation to the lesions of the lung. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a rare neurodegenerative disease which shows several psychiatric and neurologic symptoms: pseudobulbar palsy, supranuclear ocular palsy, extrapyramidal rigidity, gait ataxia, and dementia. Almost all cases seem to be sporadic; therefore, the elucidation of risk factors is important to clarify the pathological mechanism. Apolipoprotein E4 (ApoE4) is now well established as a risk factor of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here we report the ApoE allele frequency in PSP, which shares pathological findings such as neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) with AD. NFT is an important sign for the derangement of normal cytoskeletons in degenerating neurons. Although there was no significant increase in ∈4 allele frequency in the present series of PSP cases compared with that in the Japanese controls, there was a significant increase in the E2 allele frequency in PSP compared to controls. It has been suggested that Iberian arrival in the Americas in 1492 and subsequent dramatic depopulation led to forest regrowth that had global impacts on atmospheric CO 2 concentrations and surface temperatures. Despite tropical forests representing the most important terrestrial carbon stock globally, systematic examination of historical afforestation in these habitats in the Neotropics is lacking. Additionally, there has been no assessment of similar depopulation-afforestation dynamics in other parts of the global tropics that were incorporated into the Spanish Empire. Here, we compile and semi-quantitatively analyse pollen records from the regions claimed by the Spanish in the Atlantic and Pacific to provide pan-tropical insights into European colonial impacts on forest dynamics. Our results suggest that periods of afforestation over the past millennium varied across space and time and depended on social, economic and biogeographic contexts. We argue that this reveals the unequal and divergent origins of the Anthropocene as a socio-political and biophysical process, highlighting the need for higher-resolution, targeted analyses to fully elucidate pre-colonial and colonial era human-tropical landscape interactions., (© 2021.
