The railway sector has witnessed a significant surge in condition-based maintenance, thanks to the proliferation of sensing technologies and data-driven methodologies, such as machine learning. However, despite the plethora of algorithms designed to detect and classify track irregularities and wheel out-of-roundness, they often fall short when put to the test in real-world scenarios. These shortcomings typically stem from their inability to meet all four critical requirements for constructing an effective maintenance plan: (R1) suitability of the condition-based maintenance strategy, (R2) availability of relevant data, (R3) proper problem formulation, and (R4) accurate evaluation of data mining methods. In response to the absence of a unified framework and standardized guidelines, this survey delves into the realm of time series sensor data and wheel-track interface components for railway structural health monitoring. This survey aims to bridge this gap by offering an extensive categorization, pinpointing existing challenges, and outlining potential directions for future research. This study addresses the importance of enhancing traditional fluid-flow solvers by introducing a Machine Learning procedure to model pressure fields computed by standard fluid-flow solvers. The conventional approach involves enforcing pressure–velocity coupling through a Poisson equation, combining the Navier–Stokes and continuity equations. The solution to this Poisson equation constitutes a substantial percentage of the overall computational cost in fluid flow simulations, therefore improving its efficiency can yield significant gains in computational speed. The study aims to create a versatile method applicable to any geometry, ultimately providing a more efficient alternative to the conventional pressure solver. Machine Learning models were trained with flow fields generated by a Computational Fluid Dynamics solver applied to the confined flow over multiple geometries, namely wall-bounded cylinders with circular, rectangular, triangular, and plate cross-sections. To achieve applicability to any geometry, a method was developed to estimate pressure fields in fixed-shape blocks sampled from the flow domain and subsequently assemble them to reconstruct the entire physical domain. The model relies on multilayer perceptron neural networks combined with Principal Component Analysis transformations. The developed Machine Learning models achieved acceptable accuracy with errors of around 3%. Background: Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) is a global public health concern. This study aimed to estimate the healthcare resource utilization (HRU) and costs stratified by cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk categories using real-world evidence, in a regional population in Portugal. Methods: This is a retrospective observational study, using data from Electronic Health Records between 2017 and 2021. Patients aged ≥ 40 years, and with at least one general practitioner (GP) appointment in the 3 years before 31st of December 2019, were included. CVD risk categories were determined based on 2021 ESC prevention guidelines. HRU encompassed hospital data (hospitalizations, outpatient and emergency room visits) and GP appointments. Total direct costs per patient were calculated based on the reference cost of the Portuguese legislation for payment methodology on Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRGs). Results: Analysis of 3 122 695 episodes, revealed consistent HRU and costs across the five years. Very high-risk patients, showed higher HRU, particularly in hospital admissions. Costs tended to rise with higher CVD risk level. Very high-risk patients with ASCVD had higher costs for hospital admissions, while low-to-moderate risk patients had higher costs for GP visits. Despite a smaller proportion, very high-risk patients with prior ASCVD represent the highest costs per patient across healthcare settings (from 115€ in emergency visits to 2 673€ in hospitalizations), followed by very high-risk patients without prior ASCVD (ASCVD-risk equivalents). Conclusion: This study revealed a substantial HRU and costs by patients with very high CVD risk, particularly those with prior ASCVD. Moreover, ASCVD-risk equivalents emerge as notable consumers, emphasizing the importance of risk assessment and preventive measures in cost-effective management of these patients. Introduction: Pompe disease is caused by a rare biallelic mutation in the GAA gene resulting in acid α-glucosidase deficiency and glycogen accumulation. Aim: We analyzed hospital admissions associated with the administration of Myozyme®, utilizing the French hospital discharge database, known in France as the Programme de Médicalisation des Systèmes d'Information (PMSI), which comprehensively captures all hospital activity within the country. Methods: In this observational study, we examined hospitalization records from April 4, 2012, to December 31, 2019, within the PMSI database, focusing on admissions where Myozyme® was administered. We particularly investigated the incidence of critical care admissions and adverse events (AEs) related to Myozyme®. Results: From 2012 to 2019, approximately 26,714 hospital stays involving Myozyme® administration were recorded for 239 patients. Most (96.6%) of these were outpatient stays, with only 3.2% in critical care. Furthermore, hospitalizations without critical care needs increased from 96% in 2012 to 99% in 2019. Of the patients receiving at least one infusion, 997 critical care admissions were recorded, with 781 (78.3%) occurring concurrent with or the day after the Myozyme® treatment without directly correlating to adverse effects of enzyme therapy. Conclusions: The analysis of the French hospital discharge database indicated that Myozyme® was associated with a low incidence of AEs and complications in a hospital context, supporting the consideration of its safe use in home-infusion settings. Fish waste is a major environmental pollution problem and requires costly treatment prior to disposal. Conversion of fish waste to economically important and eco-friendly products will make fishing and fish processing more valuable and sustainable. This study evaluated waste residues from fish processing waste subjected to conventional physical extraction of fish oil for single-cell oil production using oleaginous yeast. Potential application of the single-cell oil to produce biodiesel was evaluated. The treatment containing fish waste residue (5%, w/v) and glucose (20 g/L, w/v) displayed the highest rate (14%) of total lipid generation. The fish waste residue proved to be a good nitrogen source for the oleaginous yeast, Rhodotorula sp. R1. At 15% (w/v) fish waste residue and 20% (w/v) glucose amendment of the medium, the highest biomass production was observed. The yeast bio-oil has a lipid profile like vegetable oils and consists of mainly long-chain fatty acids (between C14 and C24) which are suitable for biodiesel production. The most abundant fatty acids were palmitic acid (C16:0), elaidic acid (C18:1n-9t), and stearic acid (C18:0). FTIR analysis of the transesterification reaction product using the yeast oil confirmed its conversion to biodiesel. Although glucose amendment of medium supported lipid accumulation, it can be replaced with wastes rich in sugars to decrease the cost of single-cell bio-oil production. Electrokinetic flows driven by electro-osmotic forces are especially relevant in micro and nano-devices, presenting specific applications in medicine, biochemistry, and miniaturized industrial processes. In this work, we integrate analytical solutions with numerical methodologies to explore the fluid dynamics of viscoelastic electro-osmotic/pressure-driven fluid flows (described by the generalized Phan–Thien–Tanner (gPTT) constitutive equation) in a microchannel under asymmetric zeta potential conditions. The constitutive equation incorporates the Mittag–Leffler function with two parameters (α and β ), which regulate the rate of destruction of junctions in a network model. We analyze the impact of the various model parameters on the velocity profile and observe that our newly proposed model provides a more comprehensive depiction of flow behavior compared to traditional models, rendering it suitable for modeling complex viscoelastic flows. Bioprinting approaches are of great promise for tissue engineering applications as they allow the fabrication of constructs able to mimic native tissues' mechanical and topographical features. Additional control over cells fate can be enhanced using stimuli-responsive materials, requiring the development of novel bioinks for this purpose. In this study, bioinks comprising κ-carrageenan, collagen, and magnetic nanoparticles were designed for 3D bioprinting applications. The characterization of this material was performed, where mechanical compressive tests yielded Young's moduli ranging from 8.25 to 18.4 kPa. Rheological assessments also revealed the shear-thinning behavior of the bioinks and a temperature-dependent gelation. The capability of these bioinks to produce 3D constructs by extrusion bioprinting was established through the printability evaluation and the development of complex structures, supporting the viability and proliferation of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). Finally, as proof-of-concept, it was observed that the secretome of bioprinted MSCs stimulated with an external magnetic field of 80 mT was able to increase the number of tubes formed by human umbilical vein endothelial cells. Despite major advances in molecular profiling and classification of primary brain tumors, personalized treatment remains limited for most patients. Here, we explored the feasibility of individual molecular profiling and the efficacy of biomarker-guided therapy for adult patients with primary brain cancers in the real-world setting within the molecular tumor board Freiburg, Germany. We analyzed genetic profiles, personalized treatment recommendations, and clinical outcomes of 102 patients with 21 brain tumor types. Alterations in the cell cycle, BRAF, and mTOR pathways most frequently led to personalized treatment recommendations. Molecularly informed therapies were recommended in 71% and implemented in 32% of patients with completed molecular diagnostics. The disease control rate following targeted treatment was 50% and the overall response rate was 30%, with a progression-free survival 2/1 ratio of at least 1.3 in 31% of patients. Background: Brugada syndrome (BrS) is associated with abnormal electrophysiological properties at right ventricular epicardium, consisting of fragmented electrograms extending well beyond QRS termination. We aimed to evaluate the utility of signal-averaged electrocardiogram (SA-ECG) for the noninvasive assessment of late potentials (LP) and risk stratification of BrS patients. Methods: A prospective, observational, single-center study of BrS patients is submitted to SA-ECG with the determination of the total filtered QRS duration (fQRS), root mean square voltage of the 40 ms terminal portion of the QRS (RMS40), and duration of the low-amplitude electric potential component of the terminal portion of the QRS (LAS40). LP were considered positive when above standard cut-offs: fQRS > 114 ms, RMS40 < 20 µV, and LAS40 > 38 ms. The rates of malignant arrhythmic events (MAEs), defined as sudden death or appropriate shocks, were compared in relation to clinical characteristics and SA-ECG findings. Results: A total of 106 BrS patients (mean age, 48 ± 12 years, 67.9% male) were studied, 49% with type-1 spontaneous pattern and 81% asymptomatic. During a median follow up of 4.7 years, 10 patients (7.1%) suffered MAEs, including 4 sudden deaths. The presence of LP was significantly associated with the arrhythmic risk, which increased with the number of altered LP criteria. In comparison to the patients who had none or 1 altered LP criterium, MAE risk was 4.7 times higher in those with 2 altered criteria and 9.4 times higher in those with 3 altered LP criteria. Conclusions: SA-ECG may be a useful tool for risk stratification in BrS. The presence of 2 or 3 abnormal LP criteria could identify a subset of asymptomatic patients at high risk of arrhythmic events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brazil is one of the largest melon producers worldwide, with its northeast region contributing 96% of the national production. However, fruit quality has been affected by diseases, recently associated with different Fusarium species, which have caused significant losses. The chemical product Imazalil is the most used to control post-harvest diseases in melons in Brazil, however, it is in the process of being banned. Furthermore, the market is increasingly demanding about food and environmental safety, increasing the need to search for alternative methods. From this perspective, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of thermotherapy on the management of rot caused by Fusarium species in Galia melons. Six times of immersion of the fruits in hot water at 58 ºC (0, 30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 s) and one chemical treatment (Imazalil fungicide) were evaluated for each species of Fusarium evaluated (F. falciforme and F. sulawesiense). The severity of the disease in fruits subjected to heat treatment after 90 s did not differ from chemical treatment, indicating that thermotherapy treatment can be used as an alternative to Imazalil. Thermotherapy also maintained the firmness of the fruits and increased the activity of peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase enzymes, increasing the fruits shelf life and activating defense pathways. The Antarctic Peninsula (West Antarctica) marine ecosystem has undergone substantial changes due to climate-induced shifts in atmospheric and oceanic temperatures since the 1950s. Using 25 years of satellite data (1998-2022), this study presents evidence that phytoplankton biomass and bloom phenology in the West Antarctic Peninsula are significantly changing as a response to anthropogenic climate change. Enhanced phytoplankton biomass was observed along the West Antarctic Peninsula, particularly in the early austral autumn, resulting in longer blooms. Long-term sea ice decline was identified as the main driver enabling phytoplankton growth in early spring and autumn, in parallel with a recent intensification of the Southern Annular Mode (2010-ongoing), which was observed to influence regional variability. Our findings contribute to the understanding of the complex interplay between environmental changes and phytoplankton responses in this climatically key region of the Southern Ocean and raise important questions regarding the far-reaching consequences that these ecological changes may have on global carbon sequestration and Antarctic food webs in the future. Introduction: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a valuable non-invasive imaging modality for mapping white matter tracts and assessing microstructural integrity, and can be used as a "biomarker" in diagnosis, differentiation, and therapeutic monitoring. Although it has gained clinical importance as a marker of neuropathology, limitations in its interpretation underscore the need for caution. Methods: This review provides an overview of the principles and clinical applicability of DTI. We focus on major white matter fiber bundles, detailing their normal anatomy and pathological DTI patterns, with emphasis on tracts routinely requested in our neurosurgical department in the preoperative context (uncinate fasciculus, arcuate fasciculus, pyramidal pathway, optic radiation, and dentatorubrothalamic tract). Results: We guide neuroradiologists and neurosurgeons in defining volumes of interest for mapping individual tracts and demonstrating their 3D reconstructions. The intricate trajectories of white matter tracts pose a challenge for accurate fiber orientation recording, with each bundle exhibiting specific characteristics. Tracts adjacent to brain lesions are categorized as displaced, edematous, infiltrated, or disrupted, illustrated with clinical cases of brain neoplasms. To improve structured reporting, we propose a checklist of topics for inclusion in imaging evaluations and MRI reports. Conclusion: DTI is emerging as a powerful tool for assessing microstructural changes in brain disorders, despite some challenges in standardization and interpretation. This review serves an educational purpose by providing guidance for fiber monitoring and interpretation of pathological patterns observed in clinical cases, highlighting the importance and potential pitfalls of DTI in neuroradiology and surgical planning. To determine the diaphragm thickness, thickening fraction, and excursion and thickness of the quadriceps femoris muscle in full-term newborns and to evaluate the intra- and interrater reliability of these measurements. This was a prospective, observational clinical study including full-term newborns born within the first 48 h after birth. Serial measurements of the thickness, thickening fraction, and mobility of the diaphragm muscles and the thickness of the quadriceps muscle were obtained using ultrasound images. A total of 69 newborns with a mean gestational age of 39 weeks were included. The following measurements were obtained and are expressed as the mean (standard deviation): inspiratory diaphragm thickness, 0.19 cm (0.04); expiratory diaphragm thickness, 0.16 cm (0.04); diaphragm thickness fraction, 16.70 cm (10.27); diaphragmatic excursion, 0.68 cm (0.22); and quadriceps thickness, 0.99 cm (0.14). Intrarater reliability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Excellent intrarater agreement was observed for the two groups of operators (ICC > 0.86, p < 0.001) for all measurements except for the diaphragm thickening fraction, which showed good agreement for both operator groups (ICC = 0.70, p < 0.001). Regarding interrater reliability, moderate agreement between the raters was observed in the means of all measures (ICC > 0.49, p < 0.001), except for the diaphragm thickening fraction, which showed poor agreement. Conclusion: Good intrarater and moderate interrater reliability were achieved in ultrasound evaluations of the thickness and mobility of the diaphragm and quadriceps femoris muscles in full-term newborns, demonstrating the feasibility of this technique for clinical use. This pioneering study offers reference values for these muscles in a single study, allowing comparisons between different clinical conditions. By combining the formability of injection-molded polymers with a wide range of metal options, metal injection molding (MIM) allows for manufacturing metallic components with small dimensions and complex geometries. However, steels produced through this process often exhibit higher porosity compared to conventional methods. This article aims to fill this gap by developing a thermochemical oxynitrocarburizing treatment cycle applied to the austenitic stainless steel Catamold 316L. The developed treatment analyzes the diffusion kinetics, mechanical properties, and metallurgical behavior. The oxynitrocarburizing treatment was carried out at a temperature of 570 °C for varying durations of 30, 60, and 120 min. The findings showed that surface microhardness significantly increased, and corrosion resistance improved due to the ceramic behavior of the Epsolon composite and the formation of magnetite, compared to the sintered material. The study reveals a substantial rise in residual compressive stresses of up to − 2790 MPa on the sample surface. The residual stress values and the elevated surface microhardness are highly beneficial for improving the tribological properties of Catamold 316L steel produced by the MIM process. The study suggests that using ionic oxynitrocarburizing in salt baths presents an alternative to plasma processes for treating Catamold 316L steel, providing improved diffusion of nitrogen and carbon. Titanium implants are subject to bacterial adhesion and peri-implantitis induction, and biosurfactants bring a new alternative to the fight against infections. This work aimed to produce and characterize the biosurfactant from Bacillus subtilis ATCC 19,659, its anti-adhesion and antimicrobial activity, and cell viability. Anti-adhesion studies were carried out against Streptococcus sanguinis, Staphylococcus aureus, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Proteus mirabilis as the minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimum bactericidal concentration. Cell viability was measured against osteoblast and fibroblast cells. The biosurfactant was classified as lipopeptide, with critical micelle concentration at 40 µg mL− 1, and made the titanium surface less hydrophobic. The anti-adhesion effect was observed for Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus sanguinis with 54% growth inhibition and presented a minimum inhibitory concentration of 15.7 µg mL− 1 for Streptococcus sanguinis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Background: Among the nasal muscles, the levator labii superior alaeque nasi (LLSAN) acts as a transitional muscle that conjugates with other nasal and perinasal muscles. Thus, when treating the nasal region with Botulinum toxin (BTX), it is important to understand local nasal muscular dynamics and how they can influence the muscular dynamics of the entire face. Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of cases treated by an injection pattern encompassing the face, including nasal muscles. Photographs were taken at rest and during motion (frontal and oblique views), before and after treatment. Results: A total of 227 patients have been treated in the last 18 months with the following results: eyebrow tail lifting, softness of crow's feet, improvement of the drooping of the tip of the nose, and shortening of the lip philtrum when smiling. We present cases illustrating the use of this approach. Conclusions: Treating the facial muscles globally (including the frontal, corrugators, procerus, orbicularis oculi, platysma, DAO, and nasal muscles) can improve the smile and facial expressions. This is believed to occur because the elevated portion of the upper lip muscle becomes stronger as the nasal part of the LLSAN is paralyzed. Despite their ancient past and high diversity, African populations are the least represented in human population genetic studies. In this study, uniparental markers (mtDNA and Y chromosome) were used to investigate the impact of sociocultural factors on the genetic diversity and inter-ethnolinguistic gene flow in the three major Nigerian groups: Hausa (n = 89), Yoruba (n = 135) and Igbo (n = 134). The results show a distinct history from the maternal and paternal perspectives. The three Nigerian groups present a similar substrate for mtDNA, but not for the Y chromosome. The two Niger–Congo groups, Yoruba and Igbo, are paternally genetically correlated with populations from the same ethnolinguistic affiliation. Meanwhile, the Hausa is paternally closer to other Afro-Asiatic populations and presented a high diversity of lineages from across Africa. When expanding the analyses to other African populations, it is observed that language did not act as a major barrier to female-mediated gene flow and that the differentiation of paternal lineages is better correlated with linguistic than geographic distances. The results obtained demonstrate the impact of patrilocality, a common and well-established practice in populations from Central-West Africa, in the preservation of the patrilineage gene pool and in the affirmation of identity between groups. Objectives: Early, accurate diagnosis is crucial for the prognosis of patients with soft tissue sarcomas. To this end, standardization of imaging algorithms, technical requirements, and reporting is therefore a prerequisite. Since the first European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology (ESSR) consensus in 2015, technical achievements, further insights into specific entities, and the revised WHO-classification (2020) and AJCC staging system (2017) made an update necessary. The guidelines are intended to support radiologists in their decision-making and contribute to interdisciplinary tumor board discussions. Materials and methods: A validated Delphi method based on peer-reviewed literature was used to derive consensus among a panel of 46 specialized musculoskeletal radiologists from 12 European countries. Statements were scored online by level of agreement (0 to 10) during two iterative rounds. Either "group consensus," "group agreement," or "lack of agreement" was achieved. Results: Eight sections were defined that finally contained 145 statements with comments. Overall, group consensus was reached in 95.9%, and group agreement in 4.1%. This communication contains the first part consisting of the imaging algorithm for suspected soft tissue tumors, methods for local imaging, and the role of tumor centers. Conclusion: Ultrasound represents the initial triage imaging modality for accessible and small tumors. MRI is the modality of choice for the characterization and local staging of most soft tissue tumors. CT is indicated in special situations. In suspicious or likely malignant tumors, a specialist tumor center should be contacted for referral or teleradiologic second opinion. This should be done before performing a biopsy, without exception. Clinical relevance: The updated ESSR soft tissue tumor imaging guidelines aim to provide best practice expert consensus for standardized imaging, to support radiologists in their decision-making, and to improve examination comparability both in individual patients and in future studies on individualized strategies. Purpose: To evaluate the performance of the rapid colorimetric polymyxin B microelution (RCPEm) in determining polymyxin B resistance directly from Enterobacterales-positive blood cultures. Methods: A set volume of positive blood culture bottles (diluted 1:10) was inoculated into a glucose-broth-phenol red solution (NP solution), where a polymyxin B disk was previously eluted (final concentration of 3 µg/mL). Test was read each 1 h for up to 4 h. Color change from red/orange to yellow indicated resistant isolates. Results were compared to the reference method, broth microdilution (BMD), performed from colonies grown on solid media from the same blood culture bottle. Results: One hundred fifty-two Enterobacterales-positive blood cultures were evaluated, 22.4% (34/152) of them resistant to polymyxin B (including 6.6% with borderline MICs). When performing directly from positive blood cultures (RCPEm-BC), specificity and sensitivity were 99.1% and 94.1%, respectively. Of note, 79.4% (27/34) of truly resistant isolates required 3 h of incubation, compared to the 18 ± 2 h incubation that microtiter plates of BMD demand before reading can be performed. Conclusions: RCPEm directly from blood cultures has great potential to be part of the routine of clinical microbiology laboratories to establish polymyxin B susceptibility, impacting outcome of patients with bloodstream infections caused by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales. Orbital friction stir welding (FSW) is a promising approach to joining clad pipes. In this work, the influence of individual process parameters on the material flow even as, mechanical properties in orbital friction stir welded clad pipes is investigated. Due to the local heterogeneous microstructures within the weld, joints were evaluated by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), microhardness, and digital image correlation (DIC). A microhardness increase was observed, with a maximum of 380 HV0.5 within the Inconel 625 and 265 HV0.5 within the X65 steel stir zones. Sound joints had an average ultimate tensile strength (UTS) exceeding up to 13% of the calculated theoretical tensile strength, which is obtained considering the minimum tensile strength of both materials. Additionally, failure occurred in the base material during the tensile testing, where the local strain in the stir zones of the X65 steel and Inconel 625 were only 3.3% and 10%, respectively. Mortar bedding is a high cement-based material placed between concrete blocks and can improve the tensile and shear strength of the joints. Two types are recommended, full bedding, which covers the entire liquid area of the block, and face shell bedding, where the mortar is placed only on the longitudinal walls of the block, forming a lateral cord. The union of the lack of technical regulation on the choice of the laying pattern and the execution of a wall by more than one professional, in some cases, results in the appearance of a third pattern, mixed bedding, the rows mix the full bedding and the face shell bedding types. This paper aims to evaluate the influence of the mortar bedding on the mechanical behavior of the structural masonry, where walls of concrete blocks with face shell and full and mixed bedding were made, evaluating their respective failure modes. The inputs of the wall and the structures of each proposed bedding type were individually studied and subjected to the compressive strength test. Some LVDTs have been used to evaluate and compare the displacements between patterns. In addition, the failure modes in each type of mortar bedding were analyzed. The results of the compression tests of the walls showed that the type of laying significantly influences the compressive strength of the masonry, with the face shell and mixed bedding patterns showing a loss of capacity of compressive strength in relation to the full bedding of approximately 18.5% and 21.7%, respectively. In addition, it was noted that in addition to being less resistant, the mixed pattern failed at the end of the elastic zone, demonstrating a brittle behavior. Given the facts, the full and face shell bedding is indicated; the face shell bedding is used with caution, considering its reduced load capacity and failure mode, when dimensioning the masonry. The artificial pulsed-flows impact associated with hydropower production on the downstream biological and physical processes has been extensively addressed, showing that it may cause fish drift while changing fish habitat selection toward lower water velocity patches, acting as refuge areas. We aimed to evaluate the attraction efficiency of two flow-refuges differing in their approaching angles, for Luciobarbus bocagei at an indoor experimental flume. We tested two flow-refuge insertion angles (45° and 70°), and two flow events (base 7 L/s and pulsed-flow 60 L/s) for each. To analyze flow-refuge efficiency, we quantified fish individual and group patterns, flow-refuge use, and permanence time, while measuring glucose and lactate responses. The results showed that the individual frequency of use during simulated pulsed-flow was higher, especially on the 45° flow-refuge. The simulated pulsed-flow condition did not disrupt group behavior for both approaching angles. Glucose and lactate analysis did not trigger physiological responses in the tested trials. The 45° flow-refuge was used more often than the 70°. The narrowing of the channel caused by the 45° flow-refuge, and the consequent higher flow homogeneity increased the attractiveness of the flow-refuge. Therefore, the flow-refuge insertion angle should be a decisive criterion in the construction and installation of flow-refuges for cyprinids, and be considered a potential indirect mitigation measure. Feed cost represents a major economic determinant within cattle production, amounting to an estimated 75% of the total variable costs. Consequently, comprehensive approaches such as optimizing feed utilization through alternative feed sources, alongside the selection of feed-efficient animals, are of great significance. Here, we investigate the effect of two diets, traditional corn-grain fed and alternative by-product based, on 14 phenotypes related to feed, methane emission and production efficiency and on multi-tissue transcriptomics data from liver, muscle, and rumen wall, derived from 52 Nellore bulls, 26 on each diet. To this end, diets were contrasted at the level of phenotype, gene expression, and gene-phenotype network connectivity. As regards the phenotypic level, at a P value < 0.05, significant differences were found in favour of the alternative diet for average daily weight gain at finishing, dry matter intake at finishing, methane emission, carcass yield and subcutaneous fat thickness at the rib-eye muscle area. In terms of the transcriptional level of the 14,776 genes expressed across the examined tissues, we found 487, 484, and 499 genes differentially expressed due to diet in liver, muscle, and rumen, respectively (P value < 0.01). To explore differentially connected phenotypes across both diet-based networks, we focused on the phenotypes with the largest change in average number of connections within diets and tissues, namely methane emission and carcass yield, highlighting, in particular, gene expression changes involving SREBF2, and revealing the largest differential connectivity in rumen and muscle, respectively. Similarly, from examination of differentially connected genes across diets, the top-ranked most differentially connected regulators within each tissue were MEOX1, PTTG1, and BASP1 in liver, muscle, and rumen, respectively. Changes in gene co-expression patterns suggest activation or suppression of specific biological processes and pathways in response to dietary interventions, consequently impacting the phenotype. The identification of genes that respond differently to diets and their associated phenotypic effects serves as a crucial stepping stone for further investigations, aiming to build upon our discoveries. Mobile devices and handheld systems, such as the smartphones and tablets universally extended, are becoming increasingly powerful. Their basic hardware configuration is usually state-of-the-art heterogeneous architectures consisting of multi-core processors and some kind of accelerator such as GPUs or DSPs. Specific code adapted to the architecture is mandatory if high-performance computation is required and low-level libraries and parallelism are needed, which constitutes an important barrier for the usual developer in such devices. In this context, we propose the FancyJCL framework. It provides a high-level abstraction layer that hides implementation details and allows to develop parallel programs for mobile devices. The target platform for FancyJCL is mainly Android and Java developers due to their high market penetration. A very simple, seemingly sequential encoding results in parallel efficient OpenCL code. FancyJCL is itself based on the Fancier framework, which enables optimal memory management across memory spaces on unified memory systems. Background: Stretching has garnered significant attention in sports sciences, resulting in numerous studies. However, there is no comprehensive overview on investigation of stretching in healthy athletes. Objectives: To perform a systematic scoping review with an evidence gap map of stretching studies in healthy athletes, identify current gaps in the literature, and provide stakeholders with priorities for future research. Methods: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 and PRISMA-ScR guidelines were followed. We included studies comprising healthy athletes exposed to acute and/or chronic stretching interventions. Six databases were searched (CINAHL, EMBASE, PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science) until 1 January 2023. The relevant data were narratively synthesized; quantitative data summaries were provided for key data items. An evidence gap map was developed to offer an overview of the existing research and relevant gaps. Results: Of ~ 220,000 screened records, we included 300 trials involving 7080 athletes [mostly males (~ 65% versus ~ 20% female, and ~ 15% unreported) under 36 years of age; tiers 2 and 3 of the Participant Classification Framework] across 43 sports. Sports requiring extreme range of motion (e.g., gymnastics) were underrepresented. Most trials assessed the acute effects of stretching, with chronic effects being scrutinized in less than 20% of trials. Chronic interventions averaged 7.4 ± 5.1 weeks and never exceeded 6 months. Most trials (~ 85%) implemented stretching within the warm-up, with other application timings (e.g., post-exercise) being under-researched. Most trials examined static active stretching (62.3%), followed by dynamic stretching (38.3%) and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching (12.0%), with scarce research on alternative methods (e.g., ballistic stretching). Comparators were mostly limited to passive controls, with ~ 25% of trials including active controls (e.g., strength training). The lower limbs were primarily targeted by interventions (~ 75%). Reporting of dose was heterogeneous in style (e.g., 10 repetitions versus 10 s for dynamic stretching) and completeness of information (i.e., with disparities in the comprehensiveness of the provided information). Most trials (~ 90%) reported performance-related outcomes (mainly strength/power and range of motion); sport-specific outcomes were collected in less than 15% of trials. Biomechanical, physiological, and neural/psychological outcomes were assessed sparsely and heterogeneously; only five trials investigated injury-related outcomes. Conclusions: There is room for improvement, with many areas of research on stretching being underexplored and others currently too heterogeneous for reliable comparisons between studies. There is limited representation of elite-level athletes (~ 5% tier 4 and no tier 5) and underpowered sample sizes (≤ 20 participants). Research was biased toward adult male athletes of sports not requiring extreme ranges of motion, and mostly assessed the acute effects of static active stretching and dynamic stretching during the warm-up. Dose–response relationships remain largely underexplored. Outcomes were mostly limited to general performance testing. Injury prevention and other effects of stretching remain poorly investigated. This work addresses the problem of planning and tracking collision-free trajectories with a laboratory helicopter restrained to three degrees of freedom (DOF) using model predictive control (MPC) with mixed-integer programming (MIP) encoding. We propose a multirate structure that divides the system dynamics into slower and faster modes. The MPC-MIP is then employed to directly control only the slower portion, allowing it to operate in a closed loop in spite of its relatively time-demanding optimizations. Experimental results show that the proposed control structure allows the computation of globally optimal trajectories and controls with the required frequency, resulting in the successful maneuvering of the helicopter toward a target in an obstacle-filled environment. Agroforestry systems such as Taungya are sustainable alternatives for the recovery of degraded areas and profitability with commercial plantations, providing improvements in soil physical, chemical, and biological properties. In this context, African mahogany (Khaya ivorensis A. Chev) emerges as an important forest species in Brazil, with the potential for intercropping. The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth and economic return from the Taungya system compared to K. ivorensis monoculture in a degraded area in the humid tropics. Three planting systems were studied: T1, monoculture (K. ivorensis); T2, K. ivorensis + 1st cycle with Zea mays + 2nd cycle with Manihot esculenta; T3, K. ivorensis + 1st cycle with Vigna unguiculata + 2nd cycle with Zea mays. The survival, growth, and relative increments in plant height and stem diameter were determined for the three management systems. Productivity of the agricultural crops was quantified, and bacteriological analyses of the soil and economic systems were performed. The Taungya system with bean and corn crops provided greater growth of K. ivorensis, in addition to a greater density of total bacteria in the soil and provided a higher level of soil conditioning. In these systems, the cultivation and sale of agricultural crops can amortize the total cost of planting and maintenance of plantations with forest species, especially if family labor is considered. We study the computational cost of recovering a unit-norm sparse principal component x ∈ R n planted in a random matrix, in either the Wigner or Wishart spiked model (observing either W + λ x x ⊤ with W drawn from the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble, or N independent samples from N (0 , I n + β x x ⊤) , respectively). Prior work has shown that when the signal-to-noise ratio (λ or β N / n , respectively) is a small constant and the fraction of nonzero entries in the planted vector is ‖ x ‖ 0 / n = ρ , it is possible to recover x in polynomial time if ρ ≲ 1 / n . While it is possible to recover x in exponential time under the weaker condition ρ ≪ 1 , it is believed that polynomial-time recovery is impossible unless ρ ≲ 1 / n . We investigate the precise amount of time required for recovery in the "possible but hard" regime 1 / n ≪ ρ ≪ 1 by exploring the power of subexponential-time algorithms, i.e., algorithms running in time exp (n δ) for some constant δ ∈ (0 , 1) . For any 1 / n ≪ ρ ≪ 1 , we give a recovery algorithm with runtime roughly exp (ρ 2 n) , demonstrating a smooth tradeoff between sparsity and runtime. Our family of algorithms interpolates smoothly between two existing algorithms: the polynomial-time diagonal thresholding algorithm and the exp (ρ n) -time exhaustive search algorithm. A multi-objective optimum design of propellers is presented. Traditionally, the definition of propellers is done by choosing models that already exist on the market. However, with the advancement of technologies such as 3D printing and computer numerical control, the possibility for the designer to seek an optimized propeller for his design is increasingly feasible. In this scenario, this paper aims to propose a methodology that allows the designer to find alternative propeller designs. The methodology comprises the creation, refinement, and extension of an airfoil database available from the literature. The aerodynamic analysis uses the blade element theory and the optimization with evolutionary algorithms. Seven multi-objective constrained optimization problems were formulated, with two, three, and four conflicting objective functions concerning the propeller aerodynamic and geometric information, such as the thrust coefficient, the bending coefficient, the efficiency, and the volume of the propeller. Among them, for instance, two proposed formulations are: (i) maximizing the thrust and minimizing the bending coefficients simultaneously, (ii) maximizing the thrust coefficient, minimizing the bending coefficient, minimizing the volume of the propeller, and minimizing the efficiency simultaneously. The experiments analyzed the optimization of small propellers for two different engines, combustion and electric brushless. Five evolutionary algorithms were used to solve these problems, and solutions were extracted from the Pareto fronts using multi-criteria decision-making according to the decision-maker preferences. Purpose: Barbed sutures are tissue control devices that can reduce operating room time and costs. We analyzed the utility of barbed sutures in posterior spinal surgery in order to prove non-inferiority to conventional methods for wound closure. Methods: A cohort of patients undergoing elective posterior spinal surgery in which barbed (prospective) versus conventional sutures (retrospective) were used was analyzed. The primary endpoint was the occurrence of wound healing complications or the need for surgical revision. Secondary endpoints included postoperative stay, readmission rate, and duration and cost of wound closure. Result: A total of 483 patients participated in the study, 183 in the Barbed group and 300 in the Conventional group. Wound dehiscence or seroma occurred in 3.8% and 2.7% of the Barbed and Conventional groups, respectively (p = 0.6588). Both superficial (1.6% versus 4.0%, P = 0.2378) and deep infections (2.7% versus 4.7%, p = 0.4124) occurred similarly in both groups. Overall, the rate of re-intervention due to wound healing problems was also similar (4.9% versus 5.3%, p = 0.9906), as well as, total median hospital stay, postoperative stay and 30-day re-admission rates. The average duration of wound closure (1.66 versus 4.16 min per level operated, p < 0.0001) strongly favored the Barbed group. The mean cost of wound closure per patient was higher in the Barbed group (43.23 € versus 22.67 €, p < 0.0001). Conclusions: In elective posterior spinal procedures, the use of barbed sutures significantly reduced the duration of wound closure. The transfer of polluting industries from developed to developing countries and the often-detrimental effects this has on meeting sustainable development goals is well documented, but an analysis of the underlying reasons for this transfer has not been widely examined in the literature. This study seeks to analyse the complexity of Foreign Direct Investment in developed countries and its environmental impacts, by measuring inward and outward investment. A Panel Quantile Regression was undertaken for 14 European Union countries between 1995 and 2018. The results show that, whether countries are recipients or sources of high levels of FDI, the drivers of inward and outward investment are the same, and that sustainable development and renewable energy are both drivers of FDI. The paper also finds that outward Foreign Direct Investment is not driven by environmental regulation, and the regulatory quality of the European Union countries improves its foreign investment balance. There is a growing focus on solid-state degradation, especially for its relevance in understanding interactions with excipients. Performing a solid-state degradation of Venetoclax (VEN), we delve into VEN's stability in different solid-state oxidative stress conditions, utilizing Peroxydone™ complex and urea peroxide (UHP). The investigation extends beyond traditional forced degradation scenarios, providing insights into VEN's behavior over 32 h, considering temperature and crystallinity conditions. Distinct behaviors emerge in the cases of Peroxydone™ complex and UHP. The partially crystalline (PC-VEN) form proves more stable with Peroxydone™, while the amorphous form (A-VEN) shows enhanced stability with UHP. N-oxide VEN, a significant degradation product, varies between these cases, reflecting the impact of different oxidative stress conditions. Peroxydone™ complex demonstrates higher reproducibility and stability, making it a promising option for screening impurities in solid-state oxidative stress scenarios. This research not only contributes to the understanding of VEN's stability in solid-state but also aids formulators in anticipating excipient incompatibilities owing to presence of reactive impurities (peroxides) and oxidation in the final dosage form. This brief review aims to draw attention to the biotechnological potential of actinomycetes. Their main uses as sources of antibiotics and in agriculture would be enough not to neglect them; however, as we will see, their biotechnological application is much broader. Far from intending to exhaust this issue, we present a short survey of the research involving actinomycetes and their applications published in the last 23 years. We highlight a perspective for the discovery of new active ingredients or new applications for the known metabolites of these microorganisms that, for approximately 80 years, since the discovery of streptomycin, have been the main source of antibiotics. Based on the collected data, we organize the text to show how the cosmopolitanism of actinomycetes and the evolutionary biotic and abiotic ecological relationships of actinomycetes translate into the expression of metabolites in the environment and the richness of biosynthetic gene clusters, many of which remain silenced in traditional laboratory cultures. We also present the main strategies used in the twenty-first century to promote the expression of these silenced genes and obtain new secondary metabolites from known or new strains. Many of these metabolites have biological activities relevant to medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology industries, including candidates for new drugs or drug models against infectious and non-infectious diseases. Below, we present significant examples of the antimicrobial spectrum of actinomycetes, which is the most commonly investigated and best known, as well as their non-antimicrobial spectrum, which is becoming better known and increasingly explored. Background: Maximal strength may contribute to soccer players' performance. Several resistance training modalities offer the potential to improve maximal strength. During recent years, a large number of plyometric jump training (PJT) studies showed evidence for maximal strength improvements in soccer players. However, a comprehensive summary of the available data is lacking. Objective: To examine the effects of PJT compared with active, passive or intervention controls on the maximal strength of soccer players, irrespective of age, sex or competitive level. Methods: To perform a systematic review with meta-analysis following PRISMA 2020. Three electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and SCOPUS) were systematically searched. Studies published from inception until March 2023 were included. A PICOS approach was used to rate studies for eligibility. The PEDro scale was used to assess risk of bias. Meta-analyses were performed using the DerSimonian and Laird random-effects model if ≥ 3 studies were available. Moderator and sensitivity analyses were performed, and meta-regression was conducted when ≥ 10 studies were available for a given comparison. We rated the certainty of evidence using GRADE. Results: The search identified 13,029 documents, and from these 30 studies were eligible for the systematic review, and 27 for the meta-analyses. Overall, 1,274 soccer players aged 10.7–25.0 years participated in the included studies. Only one study recruited females. The PJT interventions lasted between 5 and 40 weeks (median = 8 weeks), with 1–3 weekly sessions. Compared to controls, PJT improved maximal dynamic strength (18 studies, 632 participants [7 females], aged 12.7–24.5 y; effect size [ES] = 0.43, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.08–0.78, p = 0.017, impact of statistical heterogeneity [I2] = 77.9%), isometric strength (7 studies; 245 participants, males, aged 11.1–22.5 y; ES = 0.58, 95% CI = 0.28–0.87, p < 0.001, I2 = 17.7%), and isokinetic peak torque (5 studies; 183 participants, males, aged 12.6–25.0 y; ES = 0.51, 95% CI = 0.22–0.80, p = 0.001, I2 = 0.0%). The PJT-induced maximal dynamic strength changes were independent of participants' age (median = 18.0 y), weeks of intervention (median = 8 weeks), and total number of training sessions (median = 16 sessions). The certainty of evidence was considered low to very low for the main analyses. Conclusions: Interventions involving PJT are more effective to improve maximal strength in soccer players compared to control conditions involving traditional sport-specific training. Groundwater contamination by pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) has been considered a public health concern worldwide. Alongside the potential toxicological risk of these organic substances, many countries still rely on groundwater for drinking water supply. Thus, this study identified a priority list of seven licit PhACs, comprising acetaminophen (ACT), tramadol (TRA), carbamazepine (CBZ), erythromycin (ERY), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), metformin (MET), and oxazepam (OXZ). Consumption, concentration, and human toxicity in silico results were collected from open access databases. These three indicators were analyzed separately and grouped through a general risk index. The consumption index (data from the USA and Brazil) indicated that ACT, TRA, and MET are the most consumed. Monitoring samples from the USA and Europe (n = 816) indicated that OXZ and ERY stand out as the higher occurrence index considering both regions, but the ranking for each region showed considerable differences. When assessing toxicological risk, an index ≥ 0.5 was attributed to CBZ, MET, OXZ, SMX, and TRA. Contamination of aquatic ecosystems by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) is a concerning environmental issue, given their persistence, toxicity potential, and ability to accumulate in living organisms. Several studies have been conducted to assess the contamination of aquatic ecosystems by PTEs, using pollution and ecological risk indices that rely on the concentration of these elements in aquatic sediments. However, many of these studies use global reference values for calculating the indices, which can lead to misleading interpretations due to substantial variations in PTEs concentrations influenced by the geological characteristics of each region. Therefore, the use of regional reference values is more appropriate when available. This study aimed to investigate variations in the results of five indices, employing global, regional, and quality reference values, based on sediment samples collected from rivers in the Ipanema National Forest, a protected area in Brazil exposed to various anthropogenic pressures. The results revealed that elements such as Al, Fe, and Mn exceeded the limits allowed by legislation in water samples, while As and Cr surpassed the limits in sediment samples. Comparative analysis highlighted significant discrepancies in the results of the indices when global reference values were used compared to regional and quality reference values, especially for As and Ba. Thus, this study underscores the importance of establishing specific regional values for an accurate assessment of sediment quality and the risks associated with contamination by PTEs in different regions worldwide. Natural fibers are currently highly valued due to the need for environmentally friendly alternatives. With the advancement of technology, natural fibers have substituted steel, polypropylene, carbon, and glass fibers in some applications. The potential for employing Washingtonia mesh waste (WMW) as a reinforcement for sustainable and lightweight building materials is investigated for the first time as per the authors' knowledge. For this purpose, the three-variable process, which included WMW content from 1 to 3%, was treated with an alkaline (NaOH) concentration from 1 to 5% for a time period of 4 to 24 h, with artificial neural network (ANN) techniques and response surface methodology (RSM) being used for optimization purposes. Consequently, the aim of this study is to estimate and optimize the factors that influence the properties of WMW-reinforced bio-mortars. The results showed that the amount of WMWs, the percentage of NaOH, and the duration of immersion have an impact on the mechanical and physical properties. Furthermore, it was shown that replacing 1% cement with its equivalent of WMWs that had been immersed in 2.5% NaOH for 4 h resulted in a good combination that offers improved flexural and compressive strength. Moreover, the ANN and RSM models correlate strongly with the experimental data. It is also noticed that the model accuracy using artificial neural networks is higher. Intramuscular fat (IMF) and backfat thickness (BFT) are critical economic traits impacting meat quality. However, the genetic variants controlling these traits need to be better understood. To advance knowledge in this area, we integrated RNA-seq and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) identified in genomic and transcriptomic data to generate a linkage disequilibrium filtered panel of 553,581 variants. Expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) analysis revealed 36,916 cis-eQTLs and 14,408 trans-eQTLs. Association analysis resulted in three eQTLs associated with BFT and 24 with IMF. Functional enrichment analysis of genes regulated by these 27 eQTLs revealed noteworthy pathways that can play a fundamental role in lipid metabolism and fat deposition, such as immune response, cytoskeleton remodeling, iron transport, and phospholipid metabolism. We next used ATAC-Seq assay to identify and overlap eQTL and open chromatin regions. Six eQTLs were in regulatory regions, four in predicted insulators and possible CCCTC-binding factor DNA binding sites, one in an active enhancer region, and the last in a low signal region. The perceived offset position of a moving target has been found to be displaced forward, in the direction of motion (Representational Momentum; RM), downward, in the direction of gravity (Representational Gravity; RG), and, recently, further displaced along the horizon implied by the visual context (Representational Horizon; RH). The latter, while still underexplored, offers the prospect to clarify the role of visual contextual cues in spatial orientation and in the perception of dynamic events. As such, the present work sets forth to ascertain the robustness of Representational Horizon across varying types of visual contexts, particularly between interior and exterior scenes, and to clarify to what degree it reflects a perceptual or response phenomenon. To that end, participants were shown targets, moving along one out of several possible trajectories, overlaid on a randomly chosen background depicting either an interior or exterior scene rotated −22.5º, 0º, or 22.5º in relation to the actual vertical. Upon the vanishing of the target, participants were required to indicate its last seen location with a computer mouse. For half the participants, the background vanished with the target while for the remaining it was kept visible until a response was provided. Spatial localisations were subjected to a discrete Fourier decomposition procedure to obtain independent estimates of RM, RG, and RH. Outcomes showed that RH's direction was biased towards the horizon implied by the visual context, but solely for exterior scenes, and irrespective of its presence or absence during the spatial localisation response, supporting its perceptual/representational nature. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are promising candidates for the development of new drugs. However, thorough studies on the toxicity of these molecules are scarce, which is a gap, as host toxicity is one of the main reasons for nonapproval of the drug by regulatory agencies. This work aimed to evaluate the toxicity of three AMPs isolated from Capsicum annuum leaves, named CaCPin-II, CaCDef-like and CaCLTP2. The AMP toxicological profile was evaluated by in vitro cytotoxicity against mammalian cells and systemic in vivo toxicity using Galleria mellonella larvae as study model. AMP cytotoxicity was evaluated in a broad panel of human cell lines, namely, vascular endothelium, cervical adenocarcinoma, prostatic epithelium, mammary epithelium and fibroblasts, and in murine macrophages. Cell viability was evaluated through metabolic activity, a gold standard method for assessing viability due to the speed, robustness and reliability of the results. To elucidate the toxicity mechanism of the peptides, their ability to bind to the cell surface and to permeabilize membranes was evaluated by measuring the zeta potential and the absorption of the SYTOX® Green fluorescent probe, respectively. The AMPs did not decrease cell viability or permeabilize the membranes of the cell lines at the tested concentrations. Only CaCLTP2 had the ability to interact with the cell surface, but it was not able to permeabilize them. The in vivo systemic toxicity was evaluated by the survival rate of the G. mellonella larvae inoculated with peptides. CaCPin-II showed in vivo toxicity, as the larval survival rate after the test was 60% lower than that of the controls. The results suggest that these peptides have potential as antimicrobial agents because they have low or no toxicity to mammalian cells and can serve as a framework for drug development. Objective: This study was designed in two-legs. In the in vivo, we explored the potential of a rinse solution containing a combination (Comb) of 0.1 mg/mL CaneCPI-5 (sugarcane-derive cystatin), 1.88 × 10− 5M StN15 (statherin-derived peptide) and 1.0 mg/mL hemoglobin (Hb) to change the protein profile of the acquired enamel pellicle(AEP) and the microbiome of the enamel biofilm. The in vitro, was designed to reveal the effects of Comb on the viability and bacterial composition of the microcosm biofilm, as well as on enamel demineralization. Materials and methods: In vivo study, 10 participants rinsed (10mL,1 min) with either deionized water (H2O-control) or Comb. AEP and biofilm were collected after 2 and 3 h, respectively, after rinsing. AEP samples underwent proteomics analysis, while biofilm microbiome was assessed via 16 S-rRNA Next Generation Sequencing(NGS). In vitro study, a microcosm biofilm protocol was employed. Ninety-six enamel specimens were treated with: 1)Phosphate-Buffered Solution-PBS(negative-control), 2)0.12%Chlorhexidine, 3)500ppmNaF and 4)Comb. Resazurin, colony-forming-units(CFU) and Transversal Microradiography(TMR) were performed. Results: The proteomic results revealed higher quantity of proteins in the Comb compared to control associated with immune system response and oral microbial adhesion. Microbiome showed a significant increase in bacteria linked to a healthy microbiota, in the Comb group. In the in vitro study, Comb group was only efficient in reducing mineral-loss and lesion-depth compared to the PBS. Conclusions: The AEP modification altered the subsequent layers, affecting the initial process of bacterial adhesion of pathogenic and commensal bacteria, as well as enamel demineralization. Friction surfacing (FS) is a solid-state coating technology for metallic materials, where the deposition of a consumable material on a substrate is enabled via friction and plastic deformation. The deposited layer material commonly presents a significantly refined microstructure, where corrosion could be an issue due to this grain refinement within the layer deposited, possibly creating micro galvanic pairs. The present work investigates the corrosion behavior of the FS deposited material as well as stud base material and substrate using cyclic polarization tests and open circuit potential (OCP) monitoring. Comparing the FS deposited material and the respective consumable stud base material (both AA5083), the grain size is correlated with the results from the corrosion tests, where the deposited material shows more equiaxed and refined grains in comparison to the stud base material. The cyclic potentiostatic polarization tests showed that the stud base material is more resistant to pitting nucleation presenting smaller pits and a lower amount of pits compared to deposited material and substrate. As a complement to OCP test, the stud base material is also more stable on a chloride solution compared to the substrate and the deposited material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the pandemic, restrictive measures were implemented at Portuguese residential care facilities (PRCF), such as isolating residents and ceasing collective activities. It is important to understand how PRCF are implementing activities that allow residents to occupy their time and fight isolation. As such, we aim to analyze whether: 1. new activities were implemented for residents (identifying which were carried out); 2. occupation activities were provided to isolated residents in their rooms (identifying which were carried out); 3. the implementation of activities is associated with variables like the amount of staff. This is an exploratory, quantitative, and cross-sectional study. An online questionnaire was sent by email to 2325 PRCF and entities were asked to share it with their workers. The study was also divulged on social networks. Data collection occurred between July 8th and October 18th, 2020. The study had 784 staff members participating and 90.8% reported that new activities were implemented at their facilities, predominantly videocalls. Concerning isolated residents most respondents (64.4%) stated that providing activities was impossible. Results showed that those PRCF that expanded teams had a higher percentage of new activities and activities with residents isolated in bedrooms. These results are alarming because while residents should have had more resources to cope with the pandemic, higher risks of unoccupied time and isolation existed, a dramatic situation for its potentially harmful consequences. Focusing on sanitary issues (and less on older adults) may reinforce traditional care models that had shown negative impacts before the pandemic. This highlights the need to evolve the care paradigm during and beyond the pandemic at PRCF: with Person-Centered Care as an option. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate permanent teeth with post-traumatic transversal root fractures, for their initial healing modality, the effect of candidate predictors and their long-term prognosis. Methodology: A retrospective longitudinal clinical study was conducted to evaluate records from patients bearing transversal root fractures in permanent teeth in order to radiographically assess short-term healing and non-healing events in the fracture line, their prognostic factors and their relationship with long term outcomes. The inter-fragmentary tissues were classified as healing: hard tissue (HT), connective tissue (CT) or connective tissue and bone (CT + B) and non-healing: interposition of granulation tissue (GT). A competing risk survival analysis was conducted to estimate the hazards of healing and non-healing events in the short-term and the effect of demographic, clinical, and treatment variables was assessed using the subdistribution regression model (Fine & Gray). Results: Radiographic findings showed 61.4% of healing in the short-term being strongly influenced by the presence and type of concomitant injuries to the coronal fragment. Teeth with concomitant crown fractures (sHR 24.38, 95% CI [3.16–188.3], p = 0.0022), luxations with dislocations (sHR 10.58, 95% CI [1.37–81.9], p = 0.0240) and subluxations (HR 9.66, 95% CI [1.14–81.7], p = 0.0370) were more likely to present non-healing of root fractures in the short-term. The healing rate in the long-term was of 75.9%, most of them with interposition of bone and connective tissue. Kappa statistics demonstrated an overall agreement of 67.1% between short and long-term healing patterns, in special HT and CT + Bone modalities. Conclusion: Healing at the fracture site was the most frequent outcome, both in the short-term and in the long-term. Short-term healing modality was strongly influenced by the presence and type of concomitant injuries to the crown fragment, being the worst prognosis observed in root-fractured teeth with concomitant crown fractures, followed by concomitant luxations with dislocation. Clinical relevance: Post-traumatic transversal root fractures have a positive prognosis supporting therefore, a more conservative approach for these teeth before considering more radical treatments. Manure-derived biochars have a fertilizer potential as pyrolysis concentrates non-volatile nutrients. The addition of magnesium (Mg) to poultry manure enhances its Mg/Ca ratio and could increase soluble P by phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB). Our objective was to assess the potential of PSB strains to solubilize P from both unenriched and Mg-enriched biochar and to evaluate the growth of maize in an Oxisol fertilized with biochar (100 mg kg−1 total P) to satisfy plant P needs. We examined the strains: Paraburkholderia fungorum UFLA 04–155, Pseudomonas anuradhapurensis UFPI B5-8A, Paenibacillus chondroitinus UFLA 03–116, Acinetobacter pittii UFLA 03–09, and Rhizobium tropici CIAT 899. Biochar was made from poultry manure at temperatures of 350 °C, 500 °C, and 650 °C. Maize growth and P uptake were assessed in plants after 15 and 30 days under greenhouse conditions. The strain P. anuradhapurensis UFPI B5-8A significantly released more P from Mg-biochar (82% of the total P added) than from the unenriched biochar (74% of the total P added). Furthermore, this strain released tartaric and gluconic acids when mixed with the Mg-biochar, whereas malic acid was primarily exuded when applied to unenriched biochar. Similarly, P. anuradhapurensis UFPI B5-8A inoculation or Mg enrichment resulted in a 20% increase in P uptake by maize compared to unenriched biochar. Therefore, a synergistic approach using Mg-biochar and inoculation with PSB increases phosphate availability from poultry manure and maize P use efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
