Telomerase reverse transcriptase promoter (TERTp) mutations are associated with non-radioiodine avidity. However, the role of these mutations in the clinical outcomes of patients with radioiodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancer (RAIR-DTC) remains unknown. Herein, we aim to analyze gene mutations and clinical manifestations to verify TERTp's role in driving disease progression to RAIR-DTC and clinical outcomes. Next-generation sequencing data and clinical data were obtained from 243 patients with DTC. Of the 25 patients with TERTp mutations, 80% (20/25) had RAIR-DTC. RAIR-DTC was significantly less prevalent in patients with BRAFV600E (9/143, 6.3%) than those with both BRAFV600E and TERTp mutations (14/17, 82.4%). Patients with RAIR-DTC harboring both BRAFV600E and TERTp mutations were more likely to have > 3 distant metastatic sites (85.7%, 12/14) than those with BRAFV600E alone (33.3%, 3/9). Only one patient with both BRAFV600E and TERTp mutations had non-RAIR-DTC. The time from initial radioactive iodine therapy to RAIR-DTC diagnosis was significantly shorter in patients with TERTp mutations than in those without. Patients with BRAFV600E and TERTp mutations progressed faster to RAIR-DTC than those with BRAFV600E alone (p < 0.01). Our findings suggest that molecular testing for TERTp and other mutations like BRAFV600E may inform early diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment strategies before progression to RAIR-DTC. This study evaluates flood susceptibility and risk on Bulk Supply Points in the Greater Accra region (GAR) using a Frequency Ratio model based on 15 flood conditioning factors. The model explores the influence of natural, meteorological and anthropogenic factors on flooding occurrences under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) scenarios and assesses flood risks at Bulk Supply Points (BSPs). Flood susceptibility mapping was conducted for both current and future periods under various SSP scenarios. Results reveal that elevation, slope, soil type, distance from urban areas, and SPI are the most influential factors contributing to flooding susceptibility in the region. The current flood map, about 37% of the total area of GAR categorized under the moderate flood-susceptible zone category followed by about 30% categorized under the low flood-vulnerable zone. However, about 16% was categorized under the very high flood-vulnerable zone. The study projects increasing flood susceptibility under the SSP scenarios with intensification under SSP2 and SSP3 scenarios. For instance, the areas categorized as high and very high flood susceptibility zones are projected to expand to approximately 32% and 26% each by 2055 under SSP3. The study also assesses flood risks at Bulk Supply Points (BSPs), highlighting the escalating susceptibility of power assets to flooding under different scenarios. For instance, in the very high scenario, flooding is estimated to reach 640 h in 2045 and exceed 800 h in 2055—more than double the 2020 baseline. The analysis shows the bulk supply points face increasing flood susceptibility, with risks escalating most sharply under the severe climate change SSP3 and SSP5 scenarios. Over 75% of BSPs are expected to fall in the low- to medium-risk categories across SSPs while more than 50% of BSPs are within medium- to high-risk categories in all scenarios except SSP1, reflecting the impact of climate change. SSP3 and SSP5 stand out with over 60% of BSPs facing high or very high flooding risks by 2055. It indicates moderate resilience with proper adaptation but highlights potential disruptions in critical infrastructure, such as BSPs, during persistent flooding. The food waste (FW) campaign has always been a great concern for nations before COVID-19. The menace has been a world problem and studies into the area to curb it is imperative. Many studies relating to COVID-19 and FW were conducted in the real-time pandemic era. A few years after the pandemic, it is relevant to do the aftermath of COVID-19's influence on current food waste behavior. As the world recovers from the impacts of COVID-19, the study assesses how the crisis has impacted current food waste behavior. To achieve this, the theory of planned behavior is extended with perceived future uncertainties and changes in eating habits to examine food waste behavior. A total of 407 responses were sampled from the Jiangsu Province in China and evaluated using the partial least square structural equation model. Results from the study indicate that attitude and perceived behavioral control influence residents' intention to reduce food waste. Change in eating habits is triggered by perceived future uncertainties which eventually affected their FW reduction intention and behavior positively. Also, perceived future uncertainties positively influenced food waste reduction intention. Residents' intentions to reduce food waste positively translated to the behavior to do so. The study's results present useful understandings of the relevance of changing habits and reducing FW in the face of future uncertainties. Perturbations in extreme precipitation characteristics are investigated over the Volta Basin (VB) and its three subdomains (Sahel, Soudano-Sahel and Guinea Coast) for the early-21st (2030–2053) and mid-twenty-first centuries (2057–2080) under representative concentration pathways (RCPs) 4.5 and 8.5. Seven climate indices from the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices were selected to examine future extreme precipitation features. Owing to its performance over the West African sub region, CanESM2 model results were used with Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC v7) dataset serving as reference data. Results generally show lowering trends in extreme precipitation events over the VB. The declines in extremes were dominant in the Sahel and Soudano-Sahel zones with some degree of upsurges observed in the Guinea Coast. Spatially over the basin, wet spells (CWD) were projected to shorten under RCP 8.5 (~ 7–27 days/year) relative to RCP 4.5 (~ 8–30 days/year). Similar pattern was observed for dry spells (CDD) with ranges of ~ 64–198 days/year and ~ 61–186 days/year respectively for RCPs 4.5 and 8.5. As revealed, future alterations in precipitation events have the propensity to cause alternating drought or flood events. In this line, sustainable adaptation measures and coping strategies need to be devised in time to minimize the consequences of these events, particularly those on water resources availability and ecosystem functions and services. The hand is a versatile structure that performs numerous tasks, ranging from exertion of great force such as grip, pinch and torque to execution of precise fine motor skills. The aim of current study was to undertake a preliminary study on hand dimensions as potential predictors of female populations native to the forest and savanna zones of Ghana. A total of one hundred (100) female students aged between 17 and 24 years were recruited into this study, comprising of 53 native to the forest zone and 47 native to savanna zone of Ghana between 12th June to 27th July, 2023 at the Department of Anatomy, School of Medicine and Dentistry, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Statistically significant positive correlation was observed between left hand length and right hand length (R = 0.923, p = 0.000). From the binary regression model, it could be speculated that left-hand breadth could predict female populations native to the savanna zone (LHB: β = − 2.37, Expβ = 0.09, p = 0.014). However, right-hand breadth and length and left hand length did not show any potential of prediction (RHB: β = 0.900, Expβ = 2.460, p = 0.410; RHL: β = 0.168, Expβ = 1.683, p = 0.803; LHL: β = − 0.300, Expβ = 0.741, p = 0.656). The study therefore may speculate that left handbreadth could have the potential to differentiate female populations native to savanna zone from females native to forest zone in Ghana. Emotional support from family members may have an important effect on adolescent health outcomes, and has been identified as a target for policy to protect against the impacts of poverty and other early life adversities. However, few studies have assessed the extent to which poverty and adversity themselves influence the nature of emotional support that parents can provide to adolescents. We, therefore, aimed to investigate the impact of trajectories of income poverty and family adversities, including parental mental ill health, alcohol misuse and domestic violence across childhood developmental stages on young people's relationships with their families and perceived emotional support received. We analysed longitudinal data on 10,976 children from the nationally representative UK Millennium Cohort study. Exposure trajectories of poverty and family adversities were characterised using group-based multi-trajectory models (age 9 months–14 years). The outcomes were perceived emotional support and quality of family relationships, measured by the three-item Short Social Provisions Scale (SPS-3) and levels of parent–adolescent closeness and conflict, measured at age 14. ORs and 95% CIs were estimated using multivariable logistic regression models, adjusting for potential confounding factors. At age 14, the overall prevalence of low perceived emotional support was 13% (95% CI: 12, 14). Children of mothers with lower socioeconomic status (SES) were more likely to report low emotional support, with a clear social gradient (education—degree plus: 10.3% vs. no qualifications: 15.4%). Compared with children exposed to low levels of poverty and adversity, children in the persistent adversity trajectory groups experienced higher odds of low emotional support and low-quality parent–adolescent relationship; those exposed to both persistent poverty and poor parental mental health were particularly at increased risk of experiencing poor family relationships and low perceived emotional support (adjusted odds ratio 2·2; 95% CI 1·7–2·9). Low perceived emotional support and poor family relationships in adolescence are more prevalent among socially disadvantaged children and adolescents and those experiencing social adversity. Beliefs form the fabric of every society. Likewise, there are socio-cultural beliefs that people hold as causes of climate risk. This paper sought to identify the socio-cultural beliefs on drought among crop farmers in Talensi, Ghana and how these provide insights for environmental management, social vulnerability, early warning systems and coping and adaptation. The selection of Talensi District was appropriate because it is one of the agrarian districts located in drought prone zone of Ghana. The study was designed following the case study approach. A total of 69 participants were selected through purposive sampling to participate in key informant interviews and focus group discussions conducted across nine (9) communities. The study found that manifestation of bad and/or indecent behavioural practices; performance and/or non-performance of traditional rites; presence and behaviour peculiar animals; and magical conjurations and incantations by spiritualists, diviners and soothsayers were the significant socio-cultural beliefs accounting for drought. The study concludes that the socio-cultural beliefs of the local people are their social-cultural capital and this asset is a useful gamut in explaining the social vulnerability; development of early warning drought systems; and selection of coping and adaptation strategies in Talensi District. A major recommendation is that individuals and institutions with expertise in technical and scientific early warning drought information should be circumspect in not adopting a judgmental approach when they are communicating and disseminating risk information, to the detriment of indigenous knowledge. Promoting Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) aims to increase the productive capacities of farmer households. Under FMNR, farmers select and manage natural regeneration on farmlands and keep them under production. While FMNR contributes to the wealth of farming communities, its contribution to household food security has rarely been researched. We, therefore, used a mixed-methods approach to address the research gap by measuring FMNR's contribution to food security among farmer households in the Talensi district of Ghana. We adopted the Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS) and Food Consumption Score (FCS) to estimate food security status among 243 FMNR farmer households and 243 non-FMNR farmer households. Also, we performed a Chi-square test of independence to compare the frequency of each food group (present vs not present) between FMNR adopters and non-FMNR adopters to establish the relationship between adopting FMNR and consuming the FCS and HDDS food groups. Our results reveal that FMNR farmer households are more food secure than non-FMNR farmer households. The HHDS of the FMNR farmer households was 9.6, which is higher than the target value of 9.1. Conversely, the HHDS of the non-FMNR farmer households was 4.3, which is lower than the target value of 9.1. Up to 86% and 37% of the FMNR farmer households and non-FMNR farmer households fell within acceptable FCS; 15% and 17% of FMNR farmer households and non-FMNR farmer households fell within borderline FCS. While none of the FMNR farmer households fell within poor FCS, 46% of non-FMNR farmer households fell within poor FCS. Adopting FMNR is significantly related to consuming all food groups promoted and benefiting from FMNR practices. Three supervised machine learning (ML) classification algorithms: Support Vector Classifier (SVC), K- Nearest Neighbour (K-NN), and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) classification algorithms are combined with seventy-six (76) data points of nine (9) core sample datasets retrieved from five (5) selected wells in oilfields of the Subei Basin to delineate bioturbation. Application of feature selection via p-score and f-scoring reduced the number of relevant features to 7 out of the 12 considered. Each classifier underwent model training and testing allocating 80% of the data for training and the remaining 20% for testing. Under the model training, optimization of hyperparameters of the SVC (C, Gamma and Kernel) and K-NN (K value) was performed via the grid search to understand the best form of the decision boundaries that provides optimal accuracy of prediction of Bioturbation. Results aided the selection of optimized SVC hyperparameters such as a linear kernel, C-1000 and Gamma parameter—0.10 that provided a training accuracy of 96.17%. The optimized KNN classifier was obtained based on the K = 5 nearest neighbour to obtain a training accuracy of 73.28%. The training accuracy of the LDA classifier was 67.36% which made it the worst-performing classifier in this work. Further cross-validation based on a fivefold stratification was performed on each classifier to ascertain model generalization and stability for the prediction of unseen test data. Results of the test performance of each classifier indicated that the SVC was the best predictor of the bioturbation index at 92.86% accuracy, followed by the K-NN model at 90.48%, and then the LDA classifier which gave the lowest test accuracy at 76.2%. The results of this work indicate that bioturbation can be predicted via ML methods which is a more efficient and effective means of rock characterization compared to conventional methods used in the oil and gas industry. Mind wandering occurs when a reader's thoughts are unrelated to the text's ideas. We examined the relation between mind wandering and readers' memory for text. More specifically, we assessed whether mind wandering inhibits the reader's development of the situation model and thus their ability to identify and recall the text's most central ideas. Undergraduate participants (M = 18.92 years; SD = 1.32) read and recalled three expository passages. Participants responded to intermittent probes to report mind wandering frequency. We examined how mind wandering impacted the readers' situation model, indicated by the proportion of central and peripheral ideas recalled. Using path analysis models, we found that mind wandering negatively predicted the recall of central, but not peripheral, ideas. The effect of mind wandering on the recall of central ideas was not explained by working memory span (measured by WAIS-IV digit span backward and letter-number sequencing), word reading skill (measured by Letter-Word Identification and Word Attack), or general reading comprehension skill (measured by the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test). These results indicate that mind wandering hinders the recognition and recall of a text's most central ideas and suggest that mind wandering impacts the development of a coherent situation model. This effect seems to be independent of working memory, word reading, and general reading comprehension skill. Future studies should test approaches to decrease mind wandering among adult readers. This research examined how three phytobiotics impact the growth, utilization of feed, immune response, and resistance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) to disease. A total of 180 fish, with an average initial weight of 31.2 g (number = 15 per 150-L tank), were randomly divided into four groups, with each group replicated three times. Fish were fed isoenergetic (15.7 kJ g−1 gross energy) or isonitrogenous (262 g/kg−1 crude protein) control diets supplemented with 1% Calopogonium mucunoides, Ocimum gratissimum, or Tridax procumbens leaf meals, and the feeding trial lasted 10 weeks. The growth performance, feed utilization, and innate immunity of the fish were measured. Ten fish from each replicate were intraperitoneally injected with Streptococcus agalactiae, and mortality was recorded for 18 days. The O. niloticus fed phytobiotic-enriched diets exhibited significantly greater weight gain (68.6 ± 3.7; 70.3 ± 1.6; 71.6 ± 2.9) and specific growth rates (1.70 ± 0.05; 1.71 ± 0.01; 1.73 ± 0.06) than did those in the control group (55.3 ± 1.1; 1.50 ± 0.05). Additionally, phytobiotic supplementation in Nile tilapia diets positively impacted feed conversion efficiency, protein efficiency ratio, feed conversion ratio, hematocrit, hemoglobin, red blood cells, lymphocyte count, serum protein profile, glucose level, kidney-liver function, and bactericidal and lysozyme activities. Following the challenge with S. agalactiae, the survival rates were significantly greater (p < 0.05) in the fish fed a diet supplemented with O. gratissimum (70%), T. procumbens (63.3%), or C. mucunoides (53.3%) than in those in the control group (26.3%). The abovementioned phytobiotics incorporated into Nile tilapia feed can boost production and enhance growth performance, feed efficiency, immunity, and resistance to disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cardiac electrical biomarker (CEB), an indicator of ischaemia-induced change in myocyte polarity, has been proposed for diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome. However, effect of coronary occlusion on CEB has not been demonstrated. CEB was acquired before (CEB0), during maximal adenosine hyperaemia (CEBhyp), balloon inflations (CEBmax) and 1 (CEB1h), 2 (CEB2h) and 3 (CEB3h) h after percutaneous coronary intervention along with pre- and post-procedural troponin-I. CEB of subjects with non-cardiac chest pain without risk factors was used as controls (CEBc). "Late recovery" (LR) of CEB was defined as CEB3h > median-CEB0. CEB was recorded in 75 patients undergoing stenting (group 1) including 8 with FFR < 0.8 (group 1a), 25 with FFR ≥ 0.8 (group 2) and 49 controls. In group 1, CEB0 (median, IQR) was higher than CEBc (48.0; 29.5–88.3 vs 30.0; 17.0–44.0; p < 0.001). CEBmax (185; 105.0–331.0) was higher than CEB0 (p < 0.0001). CEB1h (78.0; 31.5–143.8; p < 0.0001) and CEB2h (63.0; 31.5–114.3; p = 0.039) were higher than CEB0 while CEB3h (54.0; 24.3–94.8, p = 0.152) was similar. LR occurred in 50.7% patients. CEBmax predicted LR (OR 1.01, 95% CI 1.00–1.01, p < 0.001) (AUC 0.759, p < 0.001). CEB0 in group 1a and group 2 were similar (p = 0.524). CEBhyp was higher than CEB0 in group 1a (126.0, 109.5–266.0 vs 47.5, 20.5–73.5; p = 0.016) and group 2 (44.0, 27.8–104.8 vs 39.0, 24.0–90.3; p = 0.014). CEBhyp was higher in group 1a than 2 (p = 0.039). CEBhyp (AUC 0.75, p = 0.017) accurately predicted FFR < 0.8. Coronary arterial occlusion increases CEB that retains a "memory" of the ischaemic event. CEBhyp was higher only when FFR was ischaemic and accurately identified FFR < 0.8. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A critical shortage of skilled healthcare workers is a primary cause of disparate global cancer outcomes. We report participant evaluation of a multidisciplinary preceptorship program. In collaboration with the city of Kumasi, Ghana, Mayo Clinic and the City Cancer Challenge hosted a preceptorship program for comprehensive multidisciplinary breast and cervix cancer training. A total of 14 healthcare workers from Kumasi received two weeks of training at Mayo Clinic in November and December 2021. Each participant and preceptor were requested to complete an anonymous post-participation survey. Of the 14 trainee participants, 10 (71%) completed the survey. All respondents found the program "valuable and applicable to their clinical practice." Ninety percent reported they were able to "review effective and critical elements in the development and expansion of the multidisciplinary team" and able to "solve practical clinical cases as a team". General themes of satisfaction included: (1) organization and administration, (2) clinical observations and demonstrations, (3) guidelines development, and (4) recognizing the central importance of cultivating a team-based approach. Of the 40 preceptors, 16 (40%) completed the survey. All respondents reported they felt the training would meaningfully "influence patient care in Ghana", that participation "added value or joy to their clinical practice," and all wished to "participate in future preceptorship programs". After a focused two-week program, trainees reported high satisfaction, usefulness from observing specialized cancer care, and value in closely observing a multidisciplinary oncology team. Background: Surgical cytoreduction for neuroendocrine tumor liver metastasis (NETLM) consistently shows positive long-term outcomes. Despite reservations in guidelines for surgery when the primary tumor is unidentified (UP-NET), this study compared the surgical and oncologic long-term outcomes between patients with these rare cases undergoing cytoreductive surgery and patients who had liver resection for known primaries. Methods: The study identified 32 unknown primary liver metastases (UP-NETLM) in 522 retrospectively evaluated patients who underwent resection of well-differentiated NETLM between January 2000 and December 2020. Tumor and patient characteristics were compared with those in 490 cases of liver metastasis from small intestinal (SI-NETLM) or pancreatic (pNETLM) primaries. Survival analysis was performed to highlight long-term outcome differences. Surgical outcomes were compared between liver resections alone and simultaneous primary resections to assess surgical risk distinctions. Results: The UP-NET patients had fewer NETLMs (p = 0.004), which on the average were larger than SI-NETLMs or pNETLMs (p = 0.002). Expression of Ki-67 was balanced among the groups. Major hepatectomy was performed more often in the UP-NETLM group (p = 0.017). The 10-year survival rate of 53% for UP-NETLM was comparable with that for SI-NETML (58%; p = 0.463) and pNETLMs (47%; p = 0.497). The median hepatic progression-free survival was 26 months for the UP-NETLM patients and 25 months for the SI-NETLM patients compared to 12 months for the pNETLM patients (p < 0.001). Perioperative mortality was lower than 2%, and severe postoperative morbidity occurred in 21%, similarly distributed among all the groups. Conclusion: The surgical risk and long-term outcomes for the UP-NETLM patients were comparable with those for other NETLM cases, affirming the validity of equally aggressive surgical cytoreduction as a therapeutic option in carefully selected cases. We examine the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on financial inclusion. To identify the causal effect of FDI on financial inclusion, we use plausibly exogenous source of variations in bilateral investment treaties (BITs) as a novel instrumental variable (IV) for net FDI inflows. Using annual data for a broad panel of 90 countries over the period 2004 to 2017, our results show that FDI improves financial inclusion for both "access to finance" and "use of financial services". This impact is more pronounced for relatively poor countries and developing countries compared to rich and developed countries. We also find that higher financial market development and quality institutions improve financial inclusion directly. Moreover, financial market development and institutional quality can serve as potential channels and moderating variables through which FDI affects financial inclusion. This review aimed to systematically quantify the differences in Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) prevalence across various ethnic groups in high-income countries by sex, and to evaluate the overall prevalence trends from 1996 to 2022. We conducted a systematic literature review using MEDLINE, Web of Science Core Collection, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library, focusing on studies about MetS prevalence among ethnic groups in high-income countries. We pooled 23 studies that used NCEP-ATP III criteria and included 147,756 healthy participants aged 18 and above. We calculated pooled prevalence estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CI) using both fixed-effect and random-effect intercept logistic regression models. Data were analysed for 3 periods: 1996–2005, 2006–2009, and 2010–2021. The pooled prevalence of MetS in high-income countries, based on the NCEP-ATP III criteria, was 27.4% over the studied period, showing an increase from 24.2% in 1996–2005 to 31.9% in 2010–2021, with men and women having similar rates. When stratified by ethnicity and sex, ethnic minority women experienced the highest prevalence at 31.7%, while ethnic majority women had the lowest at 22.7%. Notably, MetS was more prevalent in ethnic minority women than men. Among ethnic minorities, women had a higher prevalence of MetS than men, and the difference was highest in Asians (about 15 percentage points). Among women, the prevalence of MetS was highest in Asians (41.2%) and lowest in Blacks/Africans (26.7%). Among men, it was highest in indigenous minority groups (34.3%) and lowest among in Blacks/Africans (19.8%). MetS is increasing at an alarming rate in high-income countries, particularly among ethnic minority women. In deep formations, it is important to support the casing and isolate the permeable zones by designing cement systems with high density. Appropriate rheology, high strength, low permeability, and low sedimentation are necessary for a successful cement program. Recently, a lot of attention has been given to the use of different materials to improve cement properties. The objective of this study is to examine the impact of using vermiculite on the properties of high-dense cement. A high cement density of 18 ppg was designed using barite as a weighting material. Five concentrations of vermiculite were used (0.1, 0.3, 0.7, 1, and 1.5) and compared with the base cement. The settling tendency of the heavy-weight particle, rheological, mechanical, and petrophysical properties of the five vermiculite-based cement samples and a base cement sample was investigated. The findings indicate that incorporating vermiculite at a concentration of 0.7% was found to improve the cement performance. Nuclear magnetic resource investigation reveals that the addition of 0.7% vermiculite minimizes barite settling. Additionally, the slurry composed of vermiculite exhibits excellent rheology, indicated by lower plastic viscosity (reduction of 8.4%) and higher gel strength (an increase of 12.5%). At this optimum concentration, the compressive strength is increased by 23.5% while the tensile strength is 28.4% higher. Moreover, the cement's permeability and porosity are reduced by 45.8% and 44.4%, respectively, compared to the base sample. The study assessed Ghana's COVID-19 lockdown and its effects on urban farmers in the capital city, Accra. Using phenomenology as the basis for studying the lived experiences during the lockdown, urban vegetable farmers expressed their feelings, views, and experiences during the period. The findings of the study were put under themes and perspectives. Farmers were allowed to express how they coped when they were affected. Our findings established that farmers were hemmed in during the locked down and could not easily liberate themselves from the harsh and difficulties they experienced. We recommend conscious efforts be made by organizations, both governmental and non-governmental, to which deal with the welfare and progress of these farmers within Ghana's cities. They should team up and train these vulnerable farmers on how to handle such shocks through the use of the most appropriate technologies, income diversification strategies and skills, well-built social support systems, and sound financial management to avoid such torment in the future. Access to groundwater for use in semi-arid regions is costly due to consistent failures in borehole drilling programs attributable to either a survey not carried out before drilling or incorrectly interpreted geophysical results. Thus, this study aims at delineating the geometry of the shallow weathered crystalline basement aquifer of the Vea catchment, northern Ghana, to aid in the assessment of its groundwater storage potential. Integrated electromagnetic and electrical resistivity surveys within the study area and borehole logs were integrated to delineate the aquifer zones of the study area. The study results revealed the interface between the bedrock and the overlying weathered subsurface as the most transmissive aquifer zone, with the saturated weathered subsurface making up 90% of the total volume of aquifers in the subsurface. The aquifer material in this zone predominantly includes varying proportions of sandy clay and weathered granite, with apparent resistivity ranging from 100 to 500 Ωm in the subsurface. Also, the results indicated that the weathered bedrock interface is irregular, and the water strike zone of the shallow aquifer in the weathered zone mimics the water table and the landscape of the area. A key objective of development thought is to improve the welfare of people and enhance their satisfaction with life. This is important following literature that suggests that increasing incomes may not necessarily lead to happiness in the long term. In this regard, this study investigates the drivers of happiness in Ghana and the determinants of transitions into different happiness states. Using a nationwide panel dataset over three time periods and employing econometric techniques, the study found that among the key determinants of happiness in Ghana are assets, social capital/networks, health status, ethnicity, age and location of residence. The study further found that assets neutralize the effects of other vital drivers while social network has a moderating effect on how assets predict happiness. In contrast, an inverted U-shape was found for the importance of assets to happiness over one's age, suggesting that assets begin to matter less for one's happiness beyond a certain age threshold. Aside from assets and social network, which predict transitions from any state of happiness to the other, the importance of other correlates of the transitions largely varies by the initial state of happiness. The adoption of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Ghana has raised a lot of public concerns and mixed feelings among some Ghanaians. Our present study, therefore, explored the current knowledge of the general public on GMOs, their perceptions, and factors that influence their understanding of GMOs. A total of 200 Ghanaians were interviewed using an online semi-structured questionnaire to solicit information on their knowledge of GMOs. The findings of the study showed that most Ghanaians (183 out of 200) are aware of GMOs. Age and level of education significantly influenced consumers' awareness of GMOs. The results also revealed that most of the participants have a medium to a high level of knowledge of GMOs; however, limited information about GMOs is available to the public. About 61% of the respondents are willing to consume GMOs when made available in Ghana. Also, the findings of the study showed that the respondents would prefer GM-labelled products. The educational level of the respondents significantly influenced their knowledge and understanding of GMOs. The study recommends that scientists and various media platforms provide a platform to address the concerns of the public on GMOs and occasionally engage them in GMO-related issues and their role in addressing food insecurity and malnutrition. Groundwater in the Nabogo Basin is threatened by increasing domestic and irrigation demands during the dry season, owing to climate change and overexploitation. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) has therefore been proposed as a water management technique to augment groundwater resources. However, the success of MAR schemes depends on the selection of sites with suitable surface and subsurface properties to enhance the recharge rates. Thus, this study created spatial maps of the slope, drainage density, land use/cover, soil texture, transmissivity, groundwater depth, and aquifer thickness in the basin to create a suitability map. Analytical hierarchy process (AHP) with and without Monte Carlo (MC) simulation was used to create weights for each criterion based on seven expert opinions to assess their performance in dealing with uncertainties. The spatial maps and weights were then integrated to create a MAR suitability map. The results showed similar mean weights for AHP- and MC-aided simulations. However, MC-aided simulations narrowed the confidence interval and reduced the standard deviation of the AHP weights by 50–89%, thereby reducing the uncertainty and sensitivity of the weights. Furthermore, the suitability map showed that 38.8% (1124 km2), 39.2% (1136 km2), and 22% (637 km2) of the basin was suitable, less suitable, and unsuitable, respectively, for MAR applications. A receiver operating curve (ROC) value of 77.8% from the validation process indicated good model performance. This proves the effectiveness of MC simulations in reducing errors and uncertainty in the AHP. Therefore, it is a useful tool for mapping MAR suitability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tropical forests cover large areas of equatorial Africa and play a substantial role in the global carbon cycle. However, there has been a lack of biometric measurements to understand the forests’ gross and net primary productivity (GPP, NPP) and their allocation. Here we present a detailed field assessment of the carbon budget of multiple forest sites in Africa, by monitoring 14 onehectare plots along an aridity gradient in Ghana, West Africa. When compared with an equivalent aridity gradient in Amazonia, the studied West African forests generally had higher productivity and lower carbon use efficiency (CUE). The West African aridity gradient consistently shows the highest NPP, CUE, GPP, and autotrophic respiration at a medium-aridity site, Bobiri. Notably, NPP and GPP of the site are the highest yet reported anywhere for intact forests. Widely used data products substantially underestimate productivity when compared to biometric measurements in Amazonia and Africa. High-risk sexual behavior is the primary risk factor for the acquisition and persistence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and the development of HPV-associated diseases including cancer. Incidence of HPV infection is high among individuals in their late teens and early 20s. Thus, college students represent a historically high-risk group for HPV infection yet are also a group with the ability to independently access HPV vaccination for HPV prevention. To inform future interventions, we examined factors associated with HPV-associated risky sexual behaviors among sexually active college students. Data (N = 741) were from an anonymous online survey distributed to students at a public Midwestern university in 2021. The outcomes were HPV-associated sexual risk behaviors—number of oral or vaginal sexual partners [high (≥ 5) or low (< 5)] and age of oral or vaginal sexual debut [early (< 18 years) or late (≥ 18 years)]. Multivariable logistic regression models estimated the association between HPV-associated risky sexual behaviors and several predictors including age, gender, relationship status, academic level, country of birth, and rural–urban status. Among sexually active students, approximately 47% and 41% had a high number of lifetime vaginal and oral partners, respectively. Among the same group, 60% and 64% had early vaginal and oral sexual debut. Students who were single and dating (aOR = 1.93; 95% CI = 1.21, 3.08) or single and not dating (2.11; 1.28, 3.48) were more likely to have a high number of vaginal lifetime partners compared with married students. Single (vs. married) students were also about twice as likely to have a high number of oral lifetime partners. Relative to graduate students, freshmen/sophomores were more likely to have an early vaginal (2.44; 1.45, 4.11) and oral (2.14; 1.26, 3.63) sexual debut. Interventions tailored to college freshmen/sophomores and unmarried students should encourage students to receive the HPV vaccine for prevention of future HPV-associated diseases. We evaluated the farmer's local knowledge and perceptions of sustainable cocoa agroforestry and sustainable soil carbon management in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire using a social survey research methodology. We employed in-depth interviewing and focus group discussions to solicit information from identified key stakeholders in the cocoa supply chain focusing on the perception of sustainable cocoa agroforestry and soil carbon management. Our results revealed that about 83% and 50.5% of smallholder cocoa farmers from Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana respectively practiced agroforestry on their farms. The respondents, however, had limited knowledge about the term agroforestry and were also not very much aware of soil carbon management. Also, about 53% and 22% of the respondents from Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana perceived agroforestry practice as better than practicing cocoa monoculture. The results further revealed that most of the cocoa farmers in these study areas had limited knowledge of the approaches or strategies to achieve sustainable cocoa agroforestry and soil carbon management on their farms. At the same time, the industry's stakeholders had different perceptions about the approaches or strategies to achieve these. Our results also revealed that educational level was the only socio-economic factor that influenced the farmer's awareness of agroforestry and soil organic carbon. This study thus suggests the need for appropriate training and education for smallholder cocoa farmers, and harmonization of the understanding among different stakeholder groups along the cocoa supply chain of common strategies to adopt to achieve sustainable cocoa production that addresses low productivity, biodiversity loss and carbon emission within the smallholder cocoa production system in West Africa. Background: The management of invasive intraductal papillary mucinous cystic neoplasm (I-IPMN) does not differ from de novo pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC); however, I-IPMNs are debated to have better prognosis. Despite being managed similarly to PDAC, no data are available on the response of I-IPMN to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Methods: All patients undergoing pancreatic resection for a pancreatic adenocarcinoma from 2011 to 2022 were included. The PDAC and I-IPMN cohorts were compared to evaluate response to neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) and overall survival (OS). Results: This study included 1052 PDAC patients and 105 I-IPMN patients. NAT was performed in 25% of I-IPMN patients and 65% of PDAC patients. I-IPMN showed a similar pattern of pathological response to NAT compared with PDAC (p = 0.231). Furthermore, positron emission tomography (PET) response (71% vs. 61%; p = 0.447), CA19.9 normalization (85% vs. 76%, p = 0.290), and radiological response (32% vs. 37%, p = 0.628) were comparable between I-IPMN and PDAC. A significantly higher OS and disease-free survival (DFS) of I-IPMN was denoted by Kaplan–Meier analysis, with a p-value of < 0.001 in both plots. In a multivariate analysis, I-IPMN histology was independently associated with lower risk of recurrence and death. Conclusions: I-IPMN patients have a longer OS and DFS after surgical treatment when compared with PDAC patients. The more favorable oncologic outcome of I-IPMNs does not seem to be related to early detection, as I-IPMN histological subclass is independently associated with a lower risk of disease recurrence. Moreover, neoadjuvant effect on I-IPMN was non-inferior to PDAC in terms of pathological, CA19.9, PET, and radiological response and thus can be considered in selected patients. Tomato production plays a crucial role in the livelihoods of farmers and agricultural households in the forest savanna transitional belt of Ghana. However, the success of tomato cultivation is hindered by the presence of insect pests and diseases, necessitating the use of agricultural inputs. This study aimed to identify the pesticides used in tomato farming, assess their World Health Organization (WHO) active ingredient hazard class, determine the precautionary behaviour associated with pesticide use by tomato farmers, and elucidate the socio-economic factors influencing pesticide usage in the Bono and Ahafo regions of Ghana. A multistage sampling procedure was employed to select 1009 respondents, who were administered a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression models were used to analyse the collected data. The results revealed that tomato farmers utilized 15 types of insecticides (e.g., lambda and chlorpyrifos ethyl based), 8 types of fungicides (e.g., mancozeb and sulphur + copper based), and 6 types of weedicides (mostly glyphosate based) on their crops. Notably, four insecticides and two fungicides types were found to be unregistered products. Lambda-cyhalothrin-based insecticides and mancozeb-based fungicides were predominantly used by the farmers. The assessed pesticides exhibited varying levels of hazard, ranging from slight to moderate. The study found that farmer training was a significant driver influencing insecticide use, while the educational level of farmers and average yield played important roles in determining fungicide use. Socio-economic factors such as being the head of the household, employing farm workers, the cultivated tomato variety, and farmer training influenced weedicide use. The type of tomato variety cultivated emerged as the primary socio-economic driver of pesticide use. The study recommended the establishment and implementation of a systematic monitoring regime for pesticide product marketing and use, with the aim of reducing the utilization of unregistered products by farmers. Purpose: This study examines providers’ and clinic staff’s perspectives on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) implementation at an academic medical center. Methods: An anonymous and voluntary survey was administered to Henry Ford Cancer providers and clinic staff 18 months after PROs program implementation in September 2020, to obtain their feedback on perceived barriers, impact on workflows, and PROs administration frequency in routine cancer care. Results: A total of 180 providers and 40 clinic staff were invited to complete the survey; 31% and 63% completed the survey, respectively. Approximately 68% of providers reported that electronically integrated PROs scores were either beneficial or somewhat beneficial to their patients, while only 28% of the clinic staff reported that PROs were beneficial or somewhat beneficial to patients. According to the clinic staff, the most common barriers to PROs completion included lack of patients’ awareness of the utility of the program with respect to their care, patients’ health status at check-in, and PROs being offered too frequently. Conclusion: There is favorable acceptance of the PROs program by providers, but clinic staff found it less favorable. Summary: Navitoclax (ABT-263) is an oral BCL2 homology-3 mimetic that binds with high affinity to pro-survival BCL2 proteins, resulting in apoptosis. Sorafenib, an oral multi kinase inhibitor also promotes apoptosis and inhibits tumor angiogenesis. The efficacy of either agent alone is limited; however, preclinical studies demonstrate synergy with the combination of navitoclax and sorafenib. In this phase 1 study, we evaluated the combination of navitoclax and sorafenib in a dose escalation cohort of patients with refractory solid tumors, with an expansion cohort in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Maximum tolerated dose (MTD) was determined using the continual reassessment method. Navitoclax and sorafenib were administered continuously on days 1 through 21 of 21-day cycles. Ten patients were enrolled in the dose escalation cohort and 15 HCC patients were enrolled in the expansion cohort. Two dose levels were tested, and the MTD was navitoclax 150 mg daily plus sorafenib 400 mg twice daily. Among all patients, the most common grade 3 toxicity was thrombocytopenia (5 patients, 20%): there were no grade 4 or 5 toxicities. Patients received a median of 2 cycles (range 1–36 cycles) and all patients were off study treatment at data cut off. Six patients in the expansion cohort had stable disease, and there were no partial or complete responses. Drug-drug interaction between navitoclax and sorafenib was not observed. The combination of navitoclax and sorafenib did not increase induction of apoptosis compared with navitoclax alone. Navitoclax plus sorafenib is tolerable but showed limited efficacy in the HCC expansion cohort. Purpose: Nigeria has the highest burden of breast cancer (BC) in Africa. While the survival rates for BC are over 90% in many high-income countries; low-and middle-income countries like Nigeria have 40% BC survival rates. Prior studies show that the burden and poor BC survival rates are exacerbated by both health system and individual level factors, yet there is a paucity of literature on the experiences of BC survivors in Nigeria. Hence, this study explored the divergent and convergent experiences of BC survivors in accessing, navigating, and coping with treatment. Methods: Participants (N = 24, aged 35 to 73 years) were recruited and engaged in focus group discussions (group 1, n = 11; group 2, n = 13 participants). Transcripts were transcribed verbatim and analyzed with inductive thematic analysis. Results: Four themes were identified: “I am carrying this [breast cancer] alone,” “Living my life,” “‘God’ helped me,” and “A very painful journey.” Participants described how they concealed their BC diagnosis from family and significant others while accessing and navigating BC treatment. Also, they adopted spiritual beliefs as a coping mechanism while sticking to their treatment and acknowledging the burden of BC on their well-being. Conclusions: Our findings explored the emotional burden of BC diagnosis and treatment and the willingness of the BC survivors to find meaning in their diagnosis. Treatment for BC survivors should integrate supportive care and innovative BC access tools to reduce pain and mitigate the burdens of BC. Implications for cancer survivors: The integration of innovative technologies for venous access and other treatment needs of BC is crucial and will improve survivorship. Non-disclosure of BC diagnosis is personal and complicated; hence, BC survivors need to be supported at various levels of care and treatment to make meaningful decisions. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the fusion rate and complications associated with trans-sacral interbody fusion (TSIF) in long fusions to the sacrum for adult spinal deformity (ASD) over a two year follow-up period. Potential predictor variables associated with pseudarthrosis were also examined. Methods: A retrospective clinical review was conducted on a consecutive series of ASD patients who underwent long fusions to the sacrum, with TSIF performed as a same-day or staged procedure. Patient demographics, bone mineral density, operative details, perioperative and late complications, and fusion rates were reviewed. Univariate analysis was used to identify the risk factors associated with pseudarthrosis. Results: The study included 43 patients with an average age of 55.3 ± 8.9 years. The perioperative complication rate was 28%, with 12% of the complications directly related to TSIF. The late complication rate was 33%, with 16% related to TSIF. The most common complications were pseudarthrosis (14%) and postoperative ileus (7%). The overall radiographic fusion rate at two years was 86%. Univariate analysis revealed that revision surgery was significantly associated with pseudarthrosis (p = 0.027). Over the follow-up period, patients who underwent TSIF during long posterior fusions to the sacrum showed improvement in overall SRS scores, ODI scores, and SF-36 physical health and mental health (p < 0.05). Conclusion: TSIF is a relatively safe and minimally invasive method for achieving interbody fusion at the lumbosacral junction in the treatment of ASD, with acceptable fusion rates and a low complication rate. Post-dispersal seed removal is crucial for maintaining plant recruitment by influencing secondary dispersal and the mortality of seeds. However, data on seed removal in the northern savanna of Ghana is scarce. In this study, we applied a rapid assessment method to examine the effect of three habitat types (conventional farmland, agroforestry parkland, and woodland) and two seed species (Leucaena leucocephala and Faidherbia albida) on seed removal by invertebrates and vertebrates in an agricultural landscape using selective exclosures in Nyankpala, a town located in the northern savanna of Ghana. The exclosures, closed and open, were designed to impose restrictions that allow either invertebrates or both invertebrates and vertebrates access to seeds. Using a generalized linear mixed modelling approach, we showed that habitat type and seed species significantly influenced the rate of seed removal, with the woodland habitat and F. albida seeds recording the highest removal rates. Our results suggest that invertebrates often dominated seed removal events compared to vertebrates, possibly due to differences in allometry and morphological traits and their effect on seed preference. This study adds to the growing evidence that savanna habitats and fauna play a critical role in maintaining plant population dynamics through seed predation and dispersal events. Plastic waste management is needed to prevent environmental damage. Recycling plastic waste is encouraged to continue using plastics while reducing environmental impact. These include the vast volume of plastic waste (p-waste) generated and discarded, the non-biodegradability of most plastic waste, the persistence of plastic waste in health, and the environmental risks of micro- and nano-plastics. Therefore, this study extended the valence theory (VT) model with openness to change, environmental concerns, and the convenience of accessible recycling infrastructure to examine residents' p-waste recycling intentions and behavior in Ghana. The main aim of this research is to assess the moderating role of age, gender, and education level in detecting Ghanaians' p-waste recycling intention-behaviors. Based on 390 survey responses, hypothetical claims were examined utilizing partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings are: (1) Perceived benefit, openness to change, environmental concerns, and convenience positively influence residents' p-waste recycling behavior through recycling intention in Ghana. (2) The study found that gender moderates the link between openness to change (OTC) and plastic waste recycling intention, while educational level moderates the link between OTC and recycling behavior. (3) Perceived benefit, openness to change, environmental concerns, perceived risk, and convenience positively affect residents' p-waste recycling intention. (4) Openness to change and convenience of accessible recycling infrastructure positively influence residents' p-waste recycling behavior. To reduce p-waste recycling complexity and maintain consistent practices, identical recycling systems and facilities must be installed in all waste generation scenarios. Cowpea is a grain legume that is commonly grown in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) for a variety of uses including food, feed, and soil fertility enhancement through nitrogen fixation. Genetic improvement in cowpea can be accomplished by creating breeding populations from high-performing but genetically diverse parental lines. The goal of this study was to use single nucleotide polymorphic markers (SNPs) to estimate genetic diversity and population stratification among cowpea parental genotypes from five countries. A total of 2,746 SNP markers were used to analyze 62 cowpea genotypes that differed in key characteristics. Only 55% of the SNP markers were polymorphic across the 62 genotypes and met the selection requirement. The gene diversity varied from 0.52 to 0.57 with an average of 0.55, while the polymorphic information content ranged from 0.46 to 0.51 with an average of 0.49, showing that the cowpea parental lines are genetically diverse. The analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) found high significant (p < 0.001) variation among genotypes and non-significant variation across genotypes depending on country of origin. The cluster analysis for the 62 genotypes using the unweighted pair group procedure with arithmetic mean approach divided the genotypes into two distinct groups. Genotypes from the same geographical regions tended to cluster together and there was a significant level of genetic variation among genotypes from Uganda and Nigeria. The SNP markers utilized in this study were effective at distinguishing genotypes and may be used to estimate the diversity in the cowpea core collection. This paper analyzes the determinants of health insurance enrollment and health expenditure in Ghana using micro data from wave 7 of the Ghana Living Standards Survey (GLSS 7) with emphasis on the role of risk preferences and the availability of health facilities in one's own community. It is possible to analyze the determinants of health insurance enrollment in Ghana because its public health insurance system (the National Health Insurance Scheme or NHIS) is, in theory, mandatory, but is, in actual practice, voluntary, with only about 40% of the population enrolled in the scheme. Our empirical findings show that risk preferences have a significant impact on health insurance enrollment, with risk averse individuals being significantly more likely than other households to enroll in health insurance. Moreover, our findings also show that very poor households are significantly more likely to enroll in health insurance than other households, perhaps because they are exempt from paying premiums for health insurance. Finally, our findings also show that the availability of health facilities in one's own community significantly decreases expenditures on health care. Ghana's National Health Insurance Scheme is pro-poor, with higher enrollment rates for the very poor. The most common BRAF mutation is thymine (T) to adenine (A) missense mutation in nucleotide 1796 (T1796A, V600E). The BRAFV600E gene encodes a protein-dependent kinase (PDK), which is a key component of the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway and essential for controlling cell proliferation, differentiation, and death. The BRAFV600E mutation causes PDK to be activated improperly and continuously, resulting in abnormal proliferation and differentiation in PTC. Based on elastography ultrasound (US) radiomic features, this study seeks to create and validate six distinct machine learning algorithms to predict BRAFV6OOE mutation in PTC patients prior to surgery. This study employed routine US strain elastography image data from 138 PTC patients. The patients were separated into two groups: those who did not have the BRAFV600E mutation (n = 75) and those who did have the mutation (n = 63). The patients were randomly assigned to one of two data sets: training (70%), or validation (30%). From strain elastography US images, a total of 479 radiomic features were retrieved. Pearson's Correlation Coefficient (PCC) and Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE) with stratified tenfold cross-validation were used to decrease the features. Based on selected radiomic features, six machine learning algorithms including support vector machine with the linear kernel (SVM_L), support vector machine with radial basis function kernel (SVM_RBF), logistic regression (LR), Naïve Bayes (NB), K-nearest neighbors (KNN), and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) were compared to predict the possibility of BRAFV600E. The accuracy (ACC), the area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity (SEN), specificity (SPEC), positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), decision curve analysis (DCA), and calibration curves of the machine learning algorithms were used to evaluate their performance. ① The machine learning algorithms' diagnostic performance depended on 27 radiomic features. ② AUCs for NB, KNN, LDA, LR, SVM_L, and SVM_RBF were 0.80 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.65–0.91), 0.87 (95% CI 0.73–0.95), 0.91(95% CI 0.79–0.98), 0.92 (95% CI 0.80–0.98), 0.93 (95% CI 0.80–0.98), and 0.98 (95% CI 0.88–1.00), respectively. ③ There was a significant difference in echogenicity,vertical and horizontal diameter ratios, and elasticity between PTC patients with BRAFV600E and PTC patients without BRAFV600E. Machine learning algorithms based on US elastography radiomic features are capable of predicting the likelihood of BRAFV600E in PTC patients, which can assist physicians in identifying the risk of BRAFV600E in PTC patients. Among the six machine learning algorithms, the support vector machine with radial basis function (SVM_RBF) achieved the best ACC (0.93), AUC (0.98), SEN (0.95), SPEC (0.90), PPV (0.91), and NPV (0.95). The fusion of the circular economy and industrial symbiosis has several advantages from an economic and developmental standpoint. Cooking energy security issues in Africa can partly be solved by the utilization of waste resources in energy technology decisions such as briquette. However, one of the limitations associated with waste-based briquettes has been identified as a reduction in efficiency when stored for a long period of time under varied storage conditions. The aim of this study was to ascertain the effects of storage time and exposure on the calorific value and mechanical characteristics of a waste-based composite briquette made from oil palm shell and decanter cake after 180 days of storage. The calorific value decreased by 12.99% and 31.40%, respectively, for sealed packaged storage and open-air storage. On the 180th day of the experiment, the packaged storage and the open-air storage registered 1000.48 kg/m3 and 870 kg/m3, 72.34% and 100%, 712% and 895%, and 118% and 143% for relaxed densities, shatter indices, resistance to impact, and hygroscopic properties respectively. In the light of China's carbon-neutral goal, this study examines how food production, forest cover, trade openness, and rural population contribute to the quest of addressing China's agricultural nitrous oxide emissions. Time series data ranging from 1971 to 2018 was used for analysis in this study. The autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) technique was employed to evaluate potential cointegration as well as to ascertain the long and short-run effects of food production, forest cover, income, trade openness, and rural population on agricultural nitrous oxide emission. The Toda-Yamomoto causality analysis was also used to identify the causal relations between covariates (food production, forest cover, income, trade openness, and rural population) and the outcome variable (agricultural nitrous oxide emission). The long-run evidence is that rural population in itself tends to increase agricultural nitrous oxide emissions likewise food production. There is also validation of the existence of environmental Kuznets curve for agricultural nitrous oxide emissions. Moreover, income interacts with rural population to reduce agricultural nitrous oxide emissions in the long-run. Causality analysis indicated rural population affects the level of forest cover; forest cover is found to cause agricultural nitrous oxide emissions but the converse is not established, and income as well as the interaction between income and rural population determines agricultural nitrous oxide emissions. The short-run dynamics results establish an oscillatory equilibrium convergence for agricultural nitrous oxide emissions in event of structural disturbances. From the findings, the EKC hypothesis is relevant by offering avenue to reduce emission. Thus, income growth remains helpful in addressing nitrous oxide emission from the agricultural sector. However, research is needed to unravel why nitrous oxide tends to increase in many forest areas. Since food production cannot be halted, policy makers need to enhance the uptake of efficient food production technologies including developing and using more renewable energy for food production. Soybean (Glycine max L.) is an important oil crop with production below the real need in Africa. To increase production, substantial upgrading must be accomplished by enlarging the genetic potential of new cultivars that relies on the parents' genetic diversity. We aimed to assess the genetic diversity and the population structure of soybean accessions, therefore, evaluate soybean value in terms of use for breeding purposes. To accomplish this, a set of 282 soybean accessions were genotyped using the diversity array technology sequencing with a high throughput of the single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). A total of 6,935 high-quality SNPs were identified across the whole soybean genome. The mean value of genetic diversity, major alleles frequency, minor alleles frequency, expected heterozygosity, and the polymorphism information content were estimated at 0.35, 0.77, 0.22, 0.33, and 0.29, respectively. The analysis of molecular variance reveals that the variance among the populations is lower than the variance within the populations. The soybean accessions could be classified into two groups based on the principal coordinate analysis. The information provided in this study will be helpful for breeders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a treatment modality that aims to target the main site of tumor dissemination in ovarian cancer, the peritoneum, by combining the benefits of intraperitoneal chemotherapy with the synergistic effects of hyperthermia all during a single administration at the time of cytoreductive surgery. High-quality evidence currently only supports the use of HIPEC with cisplatin at the time of interval cytoreduction after neoadjuvant chemotherapy for stage III epithelial ovarian cancer. Many questions remain, including HIPEC's role at other timepoints in ovarian cancer treatment, who are optimal candidates, and specifics of HIPEC protocols. This article reviews the history of normothermic and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy in ovarian cancer and evidence regarding HIPEC implementation and patient outcomes. Additionally, this review explores details of HIPEC technique and perioperative care, cost considerations, complication and quality of life data, disparities in HIPEC use, and unresolved issues. The rising trend in carbon dioxide emissions has implications on economic livelihoods through global warming and climate change. Attaining lower carbon dioxide emissions is therefore crucial for the realization of the sustainable development goals. South Africa happens to be one of the leading countries in ICT and transport infrastructure in the sub-Saharan African region. Oppossing arguments on how ICT and tranport services affect carbon dioxide emissions exist. However, their effects on the rising trend in carbon emissions in the country has not received much empirical attention. The study analyses the role ICTs and the transportation sector play in the carbon dioxide emissions of South Africa. Regression analysis of data for the 1989–2018 period shows mobile adoption, internet usage, and telephone usage increases carbon dioxide emissions while transportation services in the country helps reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Income positively affects carbon dioxide emissions while urbanization has negative effects. Implications from the findings include the urgent need to have electricity that power ICT devices and equipment be generated from renewable and sustainable sources rather than from heavy polluting sources.
