At this critical juncture in the development of NeuroAI, we outline challenges and training needs of junior researchers working across AI and neuroscience. We also provide advice and resources to help trainees plan their NeuroAI careers. New developing area of NeuroAI at the intersection of neuroscience and artificial intelligence has many open challenges, one of which is training the new generation of experts. We recently completed the Fund Consciousness Science! Project: a workshop and subawards program aimed to align United States federal funding mechanisms and consciousness research. Here we describe the project's motivation, execution, and outcomes to motivate similar efforts both locally and globally. This Comment reviews a recent workshop that aimed at improving funding outcomes for consciousness science researchers. Increased automation transparency can improve the accuracy of automation use but can lead to increased bias towards agreeing with advice. Information about the automation's confidence in its advice may also increase the predictability of automation errors. We examined the effects of providing automation transparency, automation confidence information, and their potential interacting effect on the accuracy of automation use and other outcomes. An uninhabited vehicle (UV) management task was completed where participants selected the optimal UV to complete missions. Low or high automation transparency was provided, and participants agreed/disagreed with automated advice on each mission. We manipulated between participants whether automated advice was accompanied by confidence information. This information indicated on each trial whether automation was "somewhat" or "highly" confident in its advice. Higher transparency improved the accuracy of automation use, led to faster decisions, lower perceived workload, and increased trust and perceived usability. Providing participant automation confidence information, as compared with not, did not have an overall impact on any outcome variable and did not interact with transparency. Despite no benefit, participants who were provided confidence information did use it. For trials where lower compared to higher confidence information was presented, hit rates decreased, correct rejection rates increased, decision times slowed, and perceived workload increased, all suggestive of decreased reliance on automated advice. Such trial-by-trial shifts in automation use bias and other outcomes were not moderated by transparency. These findings can potentially inform the design of automated decision-support systems that are more understandable by humans in order to optimise human-automation interaction. Receiving appropriate, unbiased advice from their teachers is important for students' smaller- and larger-scale educational decisions. However, teachers' concerns about being or appearing to be prejudiced may interfere and lead them to provide encouraging advice to students belonging to negatively stereotyped groups even when it is not warranted (failure-to-warn phenomenon). In this experimental study, we aimed to replicate findings from the US and tested whether teacher students in Germany provided overly encouraging advice regarding the academic plans of a student with a Turkish (vs. German) name. Teacher students (n = 174) saw the overly ambitious timetable of a (supposed) student with a Turkish or German name and gave advice online on rating scales and in an open-response format. In their advice, they indicated, among others, the perceived demands of the timetable, possible affective and social consequences for the student, and the need to reconsider the timetable. Contrary to expectations and findings from the US, our analyses did not indicate differences in the advice that students with Turkish vs. German names received. Instead, teacher students warned students with a Turkish and German name equally of the difficulties associated with their potential timetable. When both a buyer and a seller have private information about their valuations of the same object, they trade the object less efficiently. A better-informed agent than the buyer and the seller can facilitate trade more efficiently by advising them with the agent's information. However, the agent's interest affects the validity of the agent's advice and thus trade outcomes. When the agent's interest is to maximize the trade probability rather than the expected transaction price, the agent is more likely to share the agent's information with both the buyer and the seller. The information provided by the agent raises not only the trade probability but also the expected transaction price. Therefore, the attempt of the agent to raise the expected transaction price may fail, whereas the one to increase the trade probability succeeds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Very brief advice (VBA; ≤ 3 min) on quitting is practical and scalable during brief medical interactions with patients who smoke. This study aims to synthesize the effectiveness of VBA for smoking cessation and summarize the implementation strategies. Methods: We searched randomized controlled trials aiming at tobacco abstinence and comparing VBA versus no smoking advice or no contact from Medline, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, PsycInfo databases, six Chinese databases, two trial registries ClinicalTrials.gov and WHO-ICTRP from inception to September 30, 2023. Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations framework was used to assess the certainty of the evidence of the meta-analytic findings. The outcomes were self-reported long-term tobacco abstinence at least 6 months after treatment initiation, earlier than 6 months after treatment initiation, and quit attempts. Effect sizes were computed as risk ratio (RR) with 95% CI using frequentist random-effect models. Data Synthesis: Thirteen randomized controlled trials from 15 articles (n = 26,437) were included. There was moderate-certainty evidence that VBA significantly increased self-reported tobacco abstinence at ≥ 6 months in the adjusted model (adjusted risk ratio ARR 1.17, 95% CI: 1.07–1.27) compared with controls. The sensitivity analysis showed similar results when abstinence was verified by biochemical validation (n = 6 studies, RR 1.53, 95% CI 0.98–2.40). There was high-certainty evidence that VBA significantly increased abstinence at < 6 months (ARR 1.22, 95% CI: 1.01–1.47). Evidence of effect on quit attempts (ARR 1.03, 95% CI 0.97–1.08) was of very low certainty. Discussion: VBA delivered in a clinical setting is effective in increasing self-reported tobacco abstinence, which provides support for wider adoption in clinical practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The London Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) provides forecasts on the expected presence of volcanic ash in the atmosphere to mitigate the risk to aviation. It is fundamentally important that operational capability is regularly tested through exercises, to guarantee an effective response to an event. We have developed exercises which practise the pull-through of scientific advice into the London VAAC, the forecast evaluation process, and the decision-making procedures and discussions needed for generating the best possible forecasts under real-time conditions. London VAAC dispersion model forecasts are evaluated against observations. To test this capability in an exercise, we must create observation data for a hypothetical event. We have developed new methodologies for generating and using simulated satellite and lidar retrievals. These simulated observations enable us to practise our ability to interpret, compare, and evaluate model output and observation data under real-time conditions. Forecast evaluation can benefit from an understanding of how different choices of model setup (input parameters), model physics, and driving meteorological data impact the predicted extent and concentration of ash. Through our exercises, we have practised comparing output from model simulations generated using different models, model setups, and meteorological data, supplied by different institutions. Our exercises also practise the communication and interaction between Met Office (UK) scientists supporting the London VAAC and external experts, enabling knowledge exchange and discussions on the interpretation of model output and observations, as we strive to deliver the best response capability for the aviation industry and stakeholders. In this paper, we outline our exercise methodology, including the use of simulated satellite and lidar observations, and the development of the strategy to compare output generated from different modelling systems. We outline the lessons learnt, including the benefits and challenges of conducting exercises which practise our ability to provide scientific advice for an operational response at the London VAAC. Purpose: To explore whether profiles derived from self-reported quality of life were associated with receipt of, and interest in, advice from a healthcare professional in people with a stoma. Methods: Secondary analysis of cross-sectional national survey data from England of 4487 people with a stoma from colorectal cancer. The survey assessed quality of life using various scales, receipt and interest in various forms of advice, and physical activity. A three-step latent profile analysis was conducted to determine the optimum number of profiles. Multinomial regression explored factors associated with profile membership. A series of logistic regression models examined whether profile membership was associated with interest in advice. Results: Five profiles were identified; ‘consistently good quality of life’, ‘functional issues’, ‘functional and financial issues’, ‘low quality of life’ and ‘supported but struggling’. Individuals in the ‘functional and financial issues’ and ‘low quality of life’ profiles were more likely to have received financial advice compared to the ‘consistently good quality of life’ profile. When compared to the ‘consistently good quality of life’ profile, all other profiles were more likely to report wanting advice across a range of areas, with the strongest associations in the ‘low quality of life’ profile. Conclusion: Findings indicate that people with a stoma are not a homogenous group in terms of quality of life. Participants in profiles with quality of life concerns report wanting more advice across various categories but findings suggest there is scope to explore how this can be tailored or adapted to specific groups. Analyzing unstructured text, e.g., online reviews and social media, has already made a major impact, yet a vast array of publicly available, unstructured non-text data houses latent insight into consumers and markets. This article focuses on three specific types of such data: image, video, and audio. Many researchers see the potential in analyzing these data sources, going beyond text, but remain unsure about how to gain insights. We review prior research, give practical methodological advice, highlight relevant marketing questions, and suggest avenues for future exploration. Critically, we spotlight the machine learning capabilities of major platforms like AWS, GCP, and Azure, and how they are equipped to handle such data. By evaluating the performance of these platforms in tasks relevant to marketing managers, we aim to guide researchers in optimizing their methodological choices. raumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant global health concern, particularly affecting young individuals, and is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Despite improvements in treatment infrastructure, many TBI patients choose discharge against medical advice (DAMA), often declining necessary surgical interventions. We aimed to investigate the factors that can be associated with DAMA in TBI patients that were recommended to have surgical treatment. This study was conducted at single tertiary university center (2008–2018), by retrospectively reviewing 1510 TBI patients whom visited the emergency room. We analyzed 219 TBI surgical candidates, including 50 declining surgery (refused group) and the others whom agreed and underwent decompressive surgery. Retrospective analysis covered demographic characteristics, medical history, insurance types, laboratory results, CT scan findings, and GCS scores. Statistical analyses identified factors influencing DAMA. Among surgical candidates, 169 underwent surgery, while 50 declined. Age (60.8 ± 17.5 vs. 70.5 ± 13.8 years; p < 0.001), use of anticoagulating medication (p = 0.015), and initial GCS scores (9.0 ± 4.3 vs. 5.3 ± 3.2; p < 0.001) appeared to be associated with refusal of decompressive surgery. Based on our analysis, factors influencing DAMA for decompressive surgery included age, anticoagulant use, and initial GCS scores. Contrary to general expectations and some previous studies, our analysis revealed that the patients' medical conditions had a larger impact than socioeconomic status under the Korean insurance system, which fully covers treatment for TBI. This article examines the impact of the withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2020–2021 on Anglo-American relations using a chronological approach. It argues that this period represented a deviation from the transactional norm in the relationship—an exchange of support and advice for capability. In the case of the withdrawal from Afghanistan, from the initial American deal with the Taliban to the evacuations, London and Washington clashed over what to do and how best to do it due to differing interests, yet the overall relationship survived. There are three implications. First, the special relationship is transactional, but when the exchange of benefits ceases due to diverging interests, disputes occur until the exchange is restored. A critical issue in the study of scientific communication from a systems theoretical perspective is its role in multiple intersystem relationships. During COVID-19, politics has adopted scientific findings to inform political decisions. However, science has in response actively coordinated its operations for providing desired stimuli to politics. Luhmann identified advice as a form of structural coupling that links political and scientific systems. Advice is not a monolithic intervention by which one side acts on the other but is rather an interface that enables the two systems to relate through distancing. In this article, I empirically illustrate how the structural coupling of the political system and scientific system through advice manifests itself in an examination of the roles that various organizations (expert meeting and cluster task forces) have played in Japan's response to COVID-19. Through this analysis, I provide a theoretical insight regarding these organizations and a more detailed case analysis of the transformation of certain organizations to re-describe the system theoretical insights of advice in the form of scientific communication between politics and science. Can we efficiently compute optimal solutions to instances of a hard problem from optimal solutions to neighbor instances, that is, instances with one local modification? For example, can we efficiently compute an optimal coloring for a graph from optimal colorings for all one-edge-deleted subgraphs? Studying such questions not only gives detailed insight into the structure of the problem itself, but also into the complexity of related problems, most notably, graph theory's core notion of critical graphs (e.g., graphs whose chromatic number decreases under deletion of an arbitrary edge) and the complexity-theoretic notion of minimality problems (also called criticality problems, e.g., recognizing graphs that become 3-colorable when an arbitrary edge is deleted). We focus on two prototypical graph problems, colorability and vertex cover. For example, we show that it is NP -hard to compute an optimal coloring for a graph from optimal colorings for all its one-vertex-deleted subgraphs, and that this remains true even when optimal solutions for all one-edge-deleted subgraphs are given. In contrast, computing an optimal coloring from all (or even just two) one-edge-added supergraphs is in P . We observe that vertex cover exhibits a remarkably different behavior, demonstrating the power of our model to delineate problems from each other more precisely on a structural level. Moreover, we provide a number of new complexity results for minimality and criticality problems. For example, we prove that Minimal-3-UnColorability is complete for DP (differences of NP sets), which was previously known only for the more amenable case of deleting vertices rather than edges. For vertex cover, we show that recognizing β -vertex-critical graphs is complete for Θ 2 p (parallel access to NP ), obtaining the first completeness result for a criticality problem for this class. This commentary reflects upon the progress, limitations, and some of the pitfalls of one UK London-based HE institution's development of a trans-disciplinary arts and sciences undergraduate degree programme specifically designed to build knowledge and confidence in students to both reflect upon and effectively respond in constructive and just ways to some of the 'global challenges' facing society. It does not challenge the importance and necessity of specialist expertise but sees the potential of a trans-disciplinary approach to education as not just complementary but increasingly valuable to a wider range of graduates. Graduates needed to lead systems change and facilitate wider appreciation and practical understanding of multidimensional problem-solving, the importance of stakeholder engagement and more holistic systems thinking, something that should not be limited to those who have the opportunity and means to study Masters or PhD degrees. As one of a few UK universities that offer inter-disciplinary or trans-disciplinary undergraduate degrees and with some added insights from a former colleague who now works on University College London's (UCL) interdisciplinary BASc, we offer the following suggestions and advice for those interested in working towards developing trans-disciplinary provision. This includes the development of a financial model that allows students and staff to work between departments or faculties; an administrative structure that promotes communication and information sharing between different departments without compromising the requirements of data protection; the buy-in and support of senior leaders who both understand and can advocate for the benefits of a trans-disciplinary approach and explicit university-wide recognition of the staff who work on such programmes in terms of career progression and support for the trans-disciplinary research they undertake. Aim: The aim of this study is to explore the barriers and facilitators to implementing physical activity promotion into eyecare services, from the perspective of eyecare professionals. Subject and methods: Eleven eyecare professionals were recruited for qualitative interviews. Thematic analysis was used to identify key themes within the interview data. Results: Five themes which represented barriers to physical activity promotion were identified in the interviews: lack of time available to discuss physical activity, health and safety concerns, fear of creating a negative experience for the patient, lack of knowledge, and resistance from patients. Facilitators to physical activity promotion identified in the interviews were categorised into two themes: easy access to information about physical activity, and organisational change. Conclusion: To enable physical activity promotion in eyecare, individual and organisational change is required. Organisational change includes providing time and resources to enable physical activity promotion in eyecare. Individual change can be facilitated by providing training, which enables eyecare professionals to be confident providing physical activity advice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the rise of decision support systems enabled by artificial intelligence (AI) in personnel selection, their impact on decision-making processes is largely unknown. Consequently, we conducted five experiments (N = 1403 students and Human Resource Management (HRM) employees) investigating how people interact with AI-generated advice in a personnel selection task. In all pre-registered experiments, we presented correct and incorrect advice. In Experiments 1a and 1b, we manipulated the source of the advice (human vs. AI). In Experiments 2a, 2b, and 2c, we further manipulated the type of explainability of AI advice (2a and 2b: heatmaps and 2c: charts). We hypothesized that accurate and explainable advice improves decision-making. The independent variables were regressed on task performance, perceived advice quality and confidence ratings. The results consistently showed that incorrect advice negatively impacted performance, as people failed to dismiss it (i.e., overreliance). Additionally, we found that the effects of source and explainability of advice on the dependent variables were limited. The lack of reduction in participants' overreliance on inaccurate advice when the systems' predictions were made more explainable highlights the complexity of human-AI interaction and the need for regulation and quality standards in HRM. Online research methods have the potential to facilitate equitable accessibility to otherwise-expensive research resources, as well as to more diverse populations and language combinations than currently populate our studies. In psycholinguistics specifically, webcam-based eye tracking is emerging as a powerful online tool capable of capturing sentence processing effects in real time. The present paper asks whether webcam-based eye tracking provides the necessary granularity to replicate effects—crucially both large and small—that tracker-based eye tracking has shown. Using the Gorilla Experiment Builder platform, this study set out to replicate two psycholinguistic effects: a robust one, the verb semantic constraint effect, first reported in Altmann and Kamide, Cognition 73(3), 247–264 (1999), and a smaller one, the lexical interference effect, first examined by Kukona et al. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 40(2), 326 (2014). Webcam-based eye tracking was able to replicate both effects, thus showing that its functionality is not limited to large effects. Moreover, the paper also reports two approaches to computing statistical power and discusses the differences in their outputs. Beyond discussing several important methodological, theoretical, and practical implications, we offer some further technical details and advice on how to implement webcam-based eye-tracking studies. We believe that the advent of webcam-based eye tracking, at least in respect of the visual world paradigm, will kickstart a new wave of more diverse studies with more diverse populations. Risk-taking is critical to decisions. Unfortunately, information about risk is not always available, and that the lack of information prompts people to use advice. A crucial question about using advice to deal with risk and uncertainty is how advice influences risk-taking, yet little research has investigated whether the effect of advice-following on risk-taking is unbiased. In two experimental studies in a financial investment context, we investigate whether investors are biased in following advice and how biased advice-following influences risk-taking. Furthermore, we investigate whether advice quality, decision environment, and justification moderate advice-following bias on risk-taking. We find that individual decision-makers follow advice across risk domains and advice quality when explained to the investors. However, we identify asymmetry in advice-following, with a bias for risk-seeking over risk-averse advice. Team and individual incentives are ubiquitous in sales, but little is known about their impact on collaboration when they are applied simultaneously. The presence of both types of incentives creates a "coopetitive" environment, where forces of collaboration and competition coexist. We examine how such environments impact the likelihood (Study 1) and the effectiveness (Study 2) of collaboration in the form of advice exchange. Exponential random graph modeling (ERGM) of network data of 540 salespeople reveals that individual incentives promote advice seeking but discourage advice giving, and team incentives stimulate advice giving but reduce advice seeking (Study 1). We also find that the effectiveness of advice depends on advice givers (Study 2). In particular, when advice givers have diverse team incentives, the advice is more effective and the need for additional advice is reduced, but when advice givers have diverse individual incentives, the advice is less effective and additional advice helps. Whether or not there is such a thing as moral expertise, and, if so, what constitutes it, is much debated. Empirical expertise bestows epistemic authority over propositional content; that is not the case in moral domains, technical expertise notwithstanding. This article identifies three types of agencies with some authority over decisions in moral matters. It shows that the source of the authority wielded by such agencies, while varying across the three forms identified, is based on empirical and technical knowledge and does not derive solely from any moral expertise of its members. Organizations and institutions invest heavily in judging performance, championing individuals who have overcome adversity and achieved through hard work. Yet the current three studies sampling Hong Kong Chinese participants (N = 570; 313 women, Mage = 20.31 years) suggest that even in a society where hard work is a valued norm, people exhibit a preference for talented naturals over hardworking strivers. In Study 1, we tested participants' explicit beliefs regarding strivers and naturals, and found that they favored strivers over naturals (ds ≥ 0.31). In Study 2, participants read a vignette of a protagonist who attained networking skills either through natural talent (in the natural condition) or hard work (in the striver condition), and then evaluated the protagonist. Participants in the natural condition rated the protagonist's competence more highly than those in the striver condition (d = 0.34), although no between-condition difference was observed in ratings of the protagonist's warmth. In Study 3, participants were again assigned to either the natural or the striver condition. In addition to rating the protagonist's competence and warmth, participants also indicated the likelihood of their endorsing advice on networking from the protagonist. Participants in the natural condition perceived the protagonist as more competent (d = 0.36) and preferred to endorse professional advice from the protagonist (d = 0.33) than those in the striver condition. Our research indicates that the naturalness preference is robust, primarily impacts competence-related judgments, and consequently shapes trust decision-making. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The growing demand for digital investment advisory services and the advancing technological process led to increased attention to this topic in recent literature. In light of these developments, the question arises whether conventional and digital advisors behave differently in their investment advisory decisions. I therefore conducted a systematic literature review and evaluated 97 publications on the determinants of conventional and digital investment advisory decisions. Based on the literature, five main determinants were identified that are important for investment advisory decisions. These determinants are identical for both variants of the advice, but there are differences in the way they are addressed. This systematic literature review provides an overview of the current state of research and can therefore help identify areas where investment advice can be improved in the future. When a company undergoes a merger or transfers its ownership, the existing governing body has an opinion on which buyer should take over as the new owner. Similar situations occur while assigning the host of big sports tournaments, like the World Cup or the Olympics. In all these settings, the values of the external bidders are as important as the opinions of the internal experts. Motivated by such scenarios, we consider a social welfare maximizing approach to design and analyze truthful mechanisms in hybrid social choice settings, where payments can be imposed to the bidders, but not to the experts. Since this problem is a combination of mechanism design with and without monetary transfers, classical solutions like VCG cannot be applied, making this a novel mechanism design problem. We consider the simple but fundamental scenario with one expert and two bidders, and provide tight approximation guarantees of the optimal social welfare. We distinguish between mechanisms that use ordinal and cardinal information, as well as between mechanisms that base their decisions on one of the two sides (either the bidders or the expert) or both. Our analysis shows that the cardinal setting is quite rich and admits several non-trivial randomized truthful mechanisms, and also allows for closer-to-optimal welfare guarantees. Objective: Communicating risk information and offering lifestyle advice are important goals in cardiac rehabilitation. However, the most effective way and the most effective source to communicate this information are not yet known. Therefore, we examined the effect of source (cardiologist, physiotherapist) and framing (gain, loss) of brief lifestyle advice on patients' intention-to-change-lifestyle. Methods: In an online experimental study, 636 cardiac patients (40% female, 67 (10) yrs.) were randomly assigned to one of four textual vignettes. Effect of source and framing on intention-to-change-lifestyle (assessed using a 5-point Likert scale) was analysed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Results: Patients expressed positive intention-to-change-lifestyle after receiving advice from the cardiologist (M = 4.1) and physiotherapist (M = 3.9). However, patients showed significantly higher intention-to-change-lifestyle after receiving advice from the cardiologist (0.58 [0.54–0.61]) when compared with the physiotherapist (0.52 [0.48–0.56]), (F[1,609] = 7.06, P = 0.01). Gain-framed and loss-framed advice appeared equally effective. However, communicating risks (loss) was remembered by only 9% of patients, whereas 89% remembered benefits (gain). Conclusions: Our study shows the value of cardiologists and physiotherapists communicating brief lifestyle advice, as cardiac patients expressed positive intention for lifestyle change after receiving advice, irrespective of framing. With ubiquitous computing, problems can be solved using more strategies than ever, though many strategies feature subpar performance. Here, we explored whether and how simple advice regarding when to use which strategy can improve performance. Specifically, we presented unfamiliar alphanumeric equations (e.g., A + 5 = F) and asked whether counting up the alphabet from the left letter by the indicated number resulted in the right letter. In an initial choice block, participants could engage in one of three cognitive strategies: (a) internal counting, (b) internal retrieval of previously generated solutions, or (c) computer-mediated external retrieval of solutions. Participants belonged to one of two groups: they were either instructed to first try internal retrieval before using external retrieval, or received no specific use instructions. In a subsequent internal block with identical instructions for both groups, external retrieval was made unavailable. The 'try internal retrieval first' instruction in the choice block led to pronounced benefits (d =.76) in the internal block. Benefits were due to facilitated creation and retrieval of internal memory traces and possibly also due to improved strategy choice. These results showcase how simple strategy advice can greatly help users navigate cognitive environments. More generally, our results also imply that uninformed use of external tools (i.e., technology) can bear the risk of not developing and using even more superior internal processing strategies. Leader election is one of the fundamental problems in distributed computing: a single node, called the leader, must be specified. This task can be formulated either in a weak way, where one node outputs leader and all other nodes output non-leader, or in a strong way, where all nodes must also learn which node is the leader. If the nodes of the network have distinct identifiers, then such an agreement means that all nodes have to output the identifier of the elected leader. For anonymous networks, the strong version of leader election requires that all nodes must be able to find a path to the leader, as this is the only way to identify it. In this paper, we study variants of deterministic leader election in arbitrary anonymous networks. Leader election is impossible in some anonymous networks, regardless of the allocated amount of time, even if nodes know the entire map of the network. This is due to possible symmetries in the network. However, even in networks in which it is possible to elect a leader knowing the map, the task may be still impossible without any initial knowledge, regardless of the allocated time. On the other hand, for any network in which leader election (weak or strong) is possible knowing the map, there is a minimum time, called the election index, in which this can be done. We consider four formulations of leader election discussed in the literature in the context of anonymous networks: one is the weak formulation, and the three others specify three different ways of finding the path to the leader in the strong formulation. Our aim is to compare the amount of initial information needed to accomplish each of these "four shades" of leader election in minimum time. Following the framework of algorithms with advice, this information (a single binary string) is provided to all nodes at the start by an oracle knowing the entire network. The length of this string is called the size of advice. We show that the size of advice required to accomplish leader election in the weak formulation in minimum time is exponentially smaller than that needed for any of the strong formulations. Thus, if the required amount of advice is used as a measure of the difficulty of the task, the weakest version of leader election in minimum time is drastically easier than any version of the strong formulation in minimum time. Purpose: Evaluate benefits and harms of education/advice for chronic primary low back pain (CPLBP) in adults to inform a World Health Organization (WHO) standard clinical guideline. Methods: Electronic databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing education/advice compared with placebo/sham, usual care, or no intervention (including comparison interventions where the attributable effect of education/advice could be isolated). We conducted meta-analyses and graded the certainty of evidence. Results: We screened 2514 citations and 86 full text RCTs and included 15 RCTs. Most outcomes were assessed 3 to 6 months post-intervention. Compared with no intervention, education/advice improved pain (10 RCTs, MD = -1.1, 95% CI -1.63 to -0.56), function (10 RCTs, SMD = -0.51, 95% CI -0.89 to -0.12), physical health-related quality of life (HRQoL) (2 RCTs, MD = 24.27, 95% CI 12.93 to 35.61), fear avoidance (5 RCTs, SMD = -1.4, 95% CI -2.51 to -0.29), depression (1 RCT; MD = 2.10, 95% CI 1.05 to 3.15), and self-efficacy (1 RCT; MD = 4.4, 95% CI 2.77 to 6.03). Education/advice conferred less benefit than sham Kinesio taping for improving fear avoidance regarding physical activity (1 RCT, MD = 5.41, 95% CI 0.28 to 10.54). Compared with usual care, education/advice improved pain (1 RCT, MD = -2.10, 95% CI -3.13 to -1.07) and function (1 RCT, MD = -7.80, 95% CI -14.28 to -1.32). There was little or no difference between education/advice and comparisons for other outcomes. For all outcomes, the certainty of evidence was very low. I offer a theory of advice. The theory has two parts: an account of the nature of advice, and an account of the quality of advice. In Sect. 2 I defend this definition: Advice: P advises R to X iff P communicates about X-ing to R in a manner that intentionally presents X-ing as worth reasoning to by R. In Sect. 4, I defend a tripartite account of the quality of advice: the standards relevant to whether advice is good concern rational agency in general, the advisee’s particular situation, and the topic of the advice. Expert advice is presumed to be more valuable, but, when the expert has a conflict of interest, overcoming that conflict is difficult. We examine the performance of acquirers who hire an adviser that employs an expert—a star analyst—who covers the target and show that such "star-crossed" acquirers fare worse than other acquirers along multiple dimensions, including lower announcement returns and higher subsequent goodwill impairments. We consider various explanations for these outcomes, and the evidence strongly points toward star-crossed acquirers being unable to mitigate their advisers' conflict of interest. Surprisingly, our analysis suggests that star-crossed managers are uninformed ex-ante about the low quality of the deals. Finally, we posit that a star-crossed adviser's advantage increases with the opacity of the target firm's accounting. The optimal range of gestational weight gain (GWG) was recently raised in Japan. This may help reduce small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants, but may also increase large-for-gestational-age (LGA) infants. This study performed hypothetical experiments to determine effective GWG advice based on quantile regression analysis. In a total of 354,401 singleton pregnancies registered in the perinatal database of the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (2013–2017), the proportions of SGA and LGA were 9.33% and 11.13%, respectively. Using regression coefficients of GWG across the birth weight-for-gestational-age quantile distribution, we analyzed changes in their proportions by simulating a uniform 3-kg extra increase in GWG or an increase or decrease based on GWG adequacy. A hypothetical experiment of a uniform increase in GWG resulted in SGA and LGA proportions of 7.26% (95% confidence interval 7.15–7.36) and 14.51% (14.37–14.66), respectively. By contrast, assuming a 3-kg increase in women with inadequate GWG and a 3-kg decrease in women with excessive GWG resulted in SGA and LGA proportions of 8.42% (8.31–8.54) and 11.50% (11.37–11.62), respectively. ChatGPT is a large language model trained on text corpora and reinforced with human supervision. Because ChatGPT can provide human-like responses to complex questions, it could become an easily accessible source of medical advice for patients. However, its ability to answer medical questions appropriately and equitably remains unknown. We presented ChatGPT with 96 advice-seeking vignettes that varied across clinical contexts, medical histories, and social characteristics. We analyzed responses for clinical appropriateness by concordance with guidelines, recommendation type, and consideration of social factors. Ninety-three (97%) responses were appropriate and did not explicitly violate clinical guidelines. Recommendations in response to advice-seeking questions were completely absent (N = 34, 35%), general (N = 18, 18%), or specific (N = 44, 46%). 53 (55%) explicitly considered social factors like race or insurance status, which in some cases changed clinical recommendations. Three experiments were designed to investigate the effect of regulatory fit based on regulatory mode on advice taking. Experiments 1a and 1b used the integral manipulation method to explore whether the fit of participants' regulatory mode with advisors' advice-giving strategies improves participants' willingness to accept advice. Experiment 2 used the incidental manipulation method to explore whether regulatory fit has a delayed effect and can cause decision-makers to accept low-quality advice. The results showed the following: (1) Decision-makers are more willing to take advice when they have regulatory fit with advisors' advice-deriving strategies compared with nonfit conditions. Objective: The purpose of this paper is to re-visit the design of three steps in the freeze-drying process, namely freezing, primary drying, and secondary drying steps. Specifically, up-to-date recommendations for selecting freeze-drying conditions are provided based on the physical–chemical properties of formulations and engineering considerations. Methods and Results: This paper discusses the fundamental factors to consider when selecting freezing, primary drying, and secondary drying conditions, and offers mathematical models for predicting the duration of each segment and product temperature during primary drying. Three simple heat/mass transfer primary drying (PD) models were tested, and their ability to predict product temperature and sublimation time showed good agreement. The PD models were validated based on the experimental data and utilized to tabulate the primary drying conditions for common pharmaceutical formulations, including amorphous and partially crystalline products. Examples of calculated drying cycles, including all steps, for typical amorphous and crystalline formulations are provided. Conclusions: The authors revisited advice from a seminal paper by Tang and Pikal (Pharm Res. 21(2):191-200, 2004) on selecting freeze-drying process conditions and found that the majority of recommendations are still applicable today. There have been a number of advancements, including methods to promote ice nucleation and computer modeling for all steps of freeze-drying process. The authors created a database for primary drying and provided examples of complete freeze-drying cycles design. Conceptual and statistical models that include conditional indirect effects (i.e., so-called "moderated mediation" models) are increasingly popular in the behavioral sciences. Although there is ample guidance in the literature for how to specify and test such models, there is scant advice regarding how to best design studies for such purposes, and this especially includes techniques for sample size planning (i.e., "power analysis"). In this paper, we discuss challenges in sample size planning for moderated mediation models and offer a tutorial for conducting Monte Carlo simulations in the specific case where one has categorical exogenous variables. Such a scenario is commonly faced when one is considering testing conditional indirect effects in experimental research, wherein the (assumed) predictor and moderator variables are manipulated factors and the (assumed) mediator and outcome variables are observed/measured variables. To support this effort, we offer example data and reproducible R code that constitutes a "toolkit" to make up for limitations in other software and aid researchers in the design of research to test moderated mediation models. The degree to which people take advice, and the factors that influence advice-taking, are of broad interest to laypersons, professionals, and policy-makers. This meta-analysis on 346 effect sizes from 129 independent datasets (N = 17, 296) assessed the weight of advice in the judge-advisor system paradigm, as well as the influence of sample and task characteristics. Information about the advisor(s) that is suggestive of advice quality was the only unique predictor of the overall pooled weight of advice. Individuals adjusted estimates by 32%, 37%, and 48% in response to advisors described in ways that suggest low, neutral, or high quality advice, respectively. This indicates that the benefits of compromise and averaging may be lost if accurate advice is perceived to be low quality, or too much weight is given to inaccurate advice that is perceived to be high quality. When examining the three levels of perceived quality separately, advice-taking was greater for subjective and uncertain estimates, relative to objective estimates, when information about the advisor was neutral in terms of advice quality. Sample characteristics had no effect on advice-taking, thus providing no evidence that age, gender, or individualism influence the weight of advice. Interactive reinforcement learning proposes the use of externally sourced information in order to speed up the learning process. When interacting with a learner agent, humans may provide either evaluative or informative advice. Prior research has focused on the effect of human-sourced advice by including real-time feedback on the interactive reinforcement learning process, specifically aiming to improve the learning speed of the agent, while minimising the time demands on the human. This work focuses on answering which of two approaches, evaluative or informative, is the preferred instructional approach for humans. Moreover, this work presents an experimental setup for a human trial designed to compare the methods people use to deliver advice in terms of human engagement. The results obtained show that users giving informative advice to the learner agents provide more accurate advice, are willing to assist the learner agent for a longer time, and provide more advice per episode. Additionally, self-evaluation from participants using the informative approach has indicated that the agent's ability to follow the advice is higher, and therefore, they feel their own advice to be of higher accuracy when compared to people providing evaluative advice. This document investigates the practices of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in using independent advisors for drug approvals. The study compares the frequency and outcomes of advisory practices at the EMA to those of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The findings show that the EMA consulted advisors for a minority of drug approval decisions, with a frequency and alignment similar to the FDA. The study suggests that the EMA and FDA could coordinate to identify best practices for incorporating recommendations into regulatory decision-making. [Extracted from the article]

The choice of tree arrangement can determine the success or failure of a silvopastoral system. We explored the knowledge and attitudes of livestock advisors regarding different tree arrangements and their perception of the benefits of the system to the pasture and the animals. Advisors from southern Brazil (n = 228) participated in an online survey. A short definition of silvopastoral systems and a schematic representation of five tree arrangements (single-row, tree-row on the border fence, multiples-rows, woodland and scattered trees) were presented, followed by open-ended, multiple-choice, and 5-point Likert scale questions. Participants were more likely to be male (84%), agronomists (47%), and 40% were older than 51 years old. Only 29% of participants stated to be acquainted with all the tree arrangements. Participants had more positive attitude toward single-row than the other tree arrangements and recognize the single-row as the most suitable from an ecological, economical and animal welfare point of view. Woodland and scattered trees arrangements were perceived as less economically viable than the others. Participants perceived the silvopastoral system beneficial to the welfare of the animals (99%), and to the pasture (62%). The main benefit mentioned for the animals and the pasture was the improvement of the microclimate, given the protection of animals from heat and the pasture from frost. In conclusion, the participants had positive attitudes towards the silvopastoral systems and their potential benefits to pasture and to animals. Secrecy has been found to increase conformity, indicating its implication for advice-taking. Based on self-protection perspective, across six studies, the present research explores secrecy's influence on advice taking and examines the mediation of the self-protection motivation to avoid social attention and the moderation of evaluation sensitivity and importance of secrets. Study1a and Study 1b show that decision-makers with secret(s) are more likely to take advice, and motivation to avoid social attention plays a mediating role. Study 2a and 2b demonstrate that judges with high evaluation sensitivity are more likely to take advice, and evaluation sensitivity also moderated the effect of secrecy on motivation to avoid social attention and on advice taking. Study 3a and 3b demonstrate the moderating effect of secret importance; judges with secrets of high importance are more likely to take the advice, and the importance of secrets as a moderator in the effect of secrecy on motivation to avoid social attention and on advice taking. Purpose: Discharge against medical advice (DAMA) is a worldwide phenomenon. It continues to challenge the healthcare system and has profound effects on outcomes of treatment. It is when a patient leaves the hospital against the treating physician's recommendation. The objectives of this study are to identify the prevalence, associated factors, and proffer recommendations to mitigate the anomaly in our local/regional healthcare system. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with data collected from consecutive patients who sought DAMA at the accident and emergency department of the hospital from October 2020 to March 2022. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data presentation. Results: Ninety-nine cases of DAMA out of 4608 patients seen at the Emergency Department during the study period, giving a prevalence rate of 2.14%. 70.7% (70) of these patients were aged 16–44 years with male-to-female ratio of 2.5:1. An estimated half the number of the patients who DAMA were traders 44.4% (44), 14.1% (14) were in paid employment, 22.2% (22) were unskilled workers, and 3% (3) unemployed. Financial constraint was the leading cause in 73 (73.7%) cases. The majority of patients had limited or no formal education, and this was significantly associated with DAMA (P = 0.032). Ninety-two patients (92.6%) sought discharge within 72 h of admission and 89 (89.9%) admitted to leaving to seek alternative methods of care. Conclusion: DAMA is still a problem in our environment. Comprehensive health insurance must be mandatory for all citizens with improved scope and coverage, especially for trauma victims. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Marine population modeling, which underpins the scientific advice to support fisheries interventions, is an active research field with recent advancements to address modern challenges (e.g., climate change) and enduring issues (e.g., data limitations). Based on discussions during the 'Land of Plenty' session at the 2021 World Fisheries Congress, we synthesize current challenges, recent advances, and interdisciplinary developments in biological fisheries models (i.e., data-limited, stock assessment, spatial, ecosystem, and climate), management strategy evaluation, and the scientific advice that bridges the science-policy interface. Our review demonstrates that proliferation of interdisciplinary research teams and enhanced data collection protocols have enabled increased integration of spatiotemporal, ecosystem, and socioeconomic dimensions in many fisheries models. However, not all management systems have the resources to implement model-based advice, while protocols for sharing confidential data are lacking and impeding research advances. We recommend that management and modeling frameworks continue to adopt participatory co-management approaches that emphasize wider inclusion of local knowledge and stakeholder input to fill knowledge gaps and promote information sharing. Moreover, fisheries management, by which we mean the end-to-end process of data collection, scientific analysis, and implementation of evidence-informed management actions, must integrate improved communication, engagement, and capacity building, while incorporating feedback loops at each stage. Increasing application of management strategy evaluation is viewed as a critical unifying component, which will bridge fisheries modeling disciplines, aid management decision-making, and better incorporate the array of stakeholders, thereby leading to a more proactive, pragmatic, transparent, and inclusive management framework–ensuring better informed decisions in an uncertain world. Research suggests that patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) share a range of cognitive biases with patients with psychosis. As the disorder often manifests in dysfunctional social interactions, we assumed associated reasoning styles would be exaggerated in a social setting. For the present study, we applied the Judge-Advisor System by asking participants to provide initial estimates of a person's age and presumed hostility based on a portrait photo. Afterwards, we presented additional cues/advice in the form of responses by anonymous previous respondents. Participants could revise their estimate, seek additional advice, or make a decision. Contrary to our preregistered hypothesis, patients with BPD (n = 38) performed similarly to healthy controls (n = 30). Patients sought the same number of pieces of advice, were equally confident, and used advice in similar ways to revise their estimates. Thus, patients with BPD did trust advice. However, patients gave higher hostility ratings to the portrayed persons. In conclusion, patients with BPD showed no cognitive biases in seeking, evaluating, and integrating socially provided information. While the study implies emotional rather than cognitive biases in the disorder, cognitive biases may still prove to be useful treatment targets in order to encourage delaying and reflecting on extreme emotional responses in social interactions. This paper addresses the need to ensure the sustainable use of water, in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. Using statistical methods, this paper analyses whether the ownership of the water utility is an explanatory factor for (1) the provision of water conservation advice on utilities' websites; and (2) how comprehensive this advice is in terms of tips on (i) installing efficient technology and (ii) adopting sustainable habits and behaviours. The paper focuses on the Spanish water industry, which is considered particularly appropriate for the analysis due to the coexistence of utilities with different ownership structures. The results reveal statistically significant differences according to the ownership of the operator and the size of the population served. For example, more private companies provide some advice on their websites, while public companies offer more tips per online advice section. The evidence should encourage national governments and regulatory authorities to pass a regulation that establishes guidelines on how these companies, both public and private, should provide water conservation advice on their websites. Background: Community pharmacies are easily accessible for self-care advice. Guidelines for providing self-care advice were introduced in several countries, including the Netherlands in the 1990s. Previous studies have indicated room for improvement in self-care advice in daily pharmacy practice. Aim: To identify barriers and facilitators for providing self-care advice. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted face-to-face or online with pharmacists and pharmacy assistants using a topic guide based on the Theoretical Domains Framework. The interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. The transcripts were deductively analysed to identify barriers and facilitators for self-care counselling. COREQ guidelines were followed. Results: In total, 13 pharmacists and 12 pharmacy assistants were interviewed to reach data saturation. In general, most themes addressed by pharmacists and pharmacy assistants belonged to similar domains. The following domains were frequently mentioned: environmental context and resources (e.g. priority for prescription drugs, privacy, collaboration with general practitioners, access to patients' records), intentions (providing reliable advice), skills (communication, decision-making), knowledge (ready guideline knowledge), beliefs about consequences (patient safety), social influences (patient awareness of pharmacist role), reinforcement (lack of reimbursement for relatively time-consuming advice). Conclusion: This study identifies barriers and facilitators for evidence-based self-care advice. Pharmacists should first support pharmacy assistants by helping them keep their knowledge and skills up to date and creating suitable pharmacy preconditions to facilitate improvements in self-care counselling. This report provides a summary of a symposium on independent advice on public international law, organized by the Dutch Advisory Committee on Public International Law (CAVV) on the 19th of January 2023 in The Hague. The speakers highlighted the internationally unique character of the CAVV, which is a formal body, established by law, advising the Dutch Government (Cabinet and Parliament) on questions of international law. The CAVV reflects the Dutch traditional culture of broad societal involvement and of compromise. It serves various audiences, such as the Dutch Cabinet and Parliament, the International Law Commission, legal academics, legal practitioners, and the wider public. The CAVV can be said to have an influence on both national and international debates regarding international law. This is illustrated on the basis of a discussion of the CAVV's advisory reports on the protection of the atmosphere, the use of the term 'genocide' by politicians, and the provision and funding of non-lethal assistance to non-state armed groups. This study explored the anticipated time to seek medical advice for possible colorectal cancer (CRC) signs/symptoms and its association with CRC symptom awareness. In addition, it examined perceived barriers that may delay seeking medical advice. Palestinian adults were recruited from hospitals, primary healthcare centers, and public spaces in 11 governorates. A modified, translated-into-Arabic version of the validated Bowel Cancer Awareness Measure was used. The questionnaire comprised three sections: sociodemographics, assessment of CRC symptom awareness and time to seek medical advice, and barriers to early presentation. A total of 4623 participants were included. The proportion that reported seeking immediate medical advice for possible CRC signs/symptoms with blood or mass ranged from 47.1% for 'blood in stools' to 59.5% for 'bleeding from back passage'. Less than half of the participants reported immediate seeking of medical advice for non-specific symptoms (ranging from 5.4% for 'loss of appetite' to 42.0% for 'anemia') and other gastrointestinal symptoms (ranging from 7.7% for 'feeling persistently full' to 35.7% for 'change in bowel habits'). Good CRC symptom awareness was associated with higher likelihood of seeking medical advice within a week from recognizing a CRC symptom. About 13.0% reported a delay to visit their doctor after recognizing a CRC symptom. The most reported barriers were practical with 'would try some herbs first' (50.9%) as the leading barrier. CRC symptoms with blood or mass prompted earlier help seeking. Participants with good CRC awareness were more likely to seek medical advice within a week. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ChatGPT is not only fun to chat with, but it also searches information, answers questions, and gives advice. With consistent moral advice, it can improve the moral judgment and decisions of users. Unfortunately, ChatGPT's advice is not consistent. Nonetheless, it does influence users' moral judgment, we find in an experiment, even if they know they are advised by a chatting bot, and they underestimate how much they are influenced. Thus, ChatGPT corrupts rather than improves its users' moral judgment.
