The nasal administration route emerged as an interesting route in systemic and brain drug delivery, and different modalities of nasal delivery are available. The nasal irrigation is one of them, but there is a lack of studies investigating the distribution of a large-volume irrigation. The main aim of this study was to assess the deposition of radiolabeled saline in the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses following nasal irrigation by imaging. Five healthy males volunteered to perform large-volume low-pressure nasal irrigation, with a douching device containing 50 mL of radiolabeled isotonic saline. Participants underwent a scintigraphy immediately after. Both the nasal cavities and maxillary sinuses were systematically reached by the solution during nasal irrigation. The sinuses set in a lower position during nasal irrigation showed a tendency to be more irrigated than the sinuses set in a higher position (7.67% vs 22.72%; p = 0.086). Moreover, substantial inter- and intraindividual heterogeneity regarding solution deposition was observed. Large-volume low-pressure nasal irrigation is a good modality to reach the maxillary sinuses as well as the nasal cavities. Background: Gastric cancer (GC), the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, with most deaths caused by advanced and metastatic disease, has limited curative options. Here, we revealed the importance of proprotein convertases (PCs) in the malignant and metastatic potential of GC cells through the regulation of the YAP/TAZ/TEAD pathway and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in cancer stem cells (CSC). Methods: The general PCs inhibitor, decanoyl-RVKR-chloromethyl-ketone (CMK), was used to repress PCs activity in CSCs of various GC cell lines. Their tumorigenic properties, drug resistance, YAP/TAZ/TEAD pathway activity, and invasive properties were then investigated in vitro, and their metastatic properties were explored in a mouse xenograft model. The prognostic value of PCs in GC patients was also explored in molecular databases of GC. Results: Inhibition of PCs activity in CSCs in all GC cell lines reduced tumorsphere formation and growth, drug efflux, EMT phenotype, and invasive properties that are associated with repressed YAP/TAZ/TEAD pathway activity in vitro. In vivo, PCs' inhibition in GC cells reduced their metastatic spread. Molecular analysis of tumors from GC patients has highlighted the prognostic value of PCs. Conclusions: PCs are overexpressed in GC and associated with poor prognosis. PCs are involved in the malignant and metastatic potential of CSCs via the regulation of EMT, the YAP/TAZ/TEAD oncogenic pathway, and their stemness and invasive properties. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is one of the surgical alternatives for drug-resistant essential tremor (ET). Here, we aimed at evaluating whether biologically effective dose (BEDGy2.47) is relevant for tremor improvement after stereotactic radiosurgical thalamotomy in a population of patients treated with one (unplugged) isocenter and a uniform dose of 130 Gy. This is a retrospective longitudinal single center study. Seventy-eight consecutive patients were clinically analyzed. Mean age was 69.1 years (median 71, range 36–88). Mean follow-up period was 14 months (median 12, 3–36). Tremor improvement was assessed at 12 months after SRS using the ET rating assessment scale (TETRAS, continuous outcome) and binary (binary outcome). BED was defined for an alpha/beta of 2.47, based upon previous studies considering such a value for the normal brain. Mean BED was 4573.1 Gy2.47 (median 4612, 4022.1–4944.7). Mean beam-on time was 64.7 min (median 61.4; 46.8–98.5). There was a statically significant correlation between delta (follow-up minus baseline) in TETRAS (total) with BED (p = 0.04; beta coefficient − 0.029) and beam-on time (p = 0.03; beta coefficient 0.57) but also between TETRAS (ADL) with BED (p = 0.02; beta coefficient 0.038) and beam-on time (p = 0.01; beta coefficient 0.71). Fractional polynomial multivariate regression suggested that a BED > 4600 Gy2.47 and a beam-on time > 70 min did not further increase clinical efficacy (binary outcome). Adverse radiation events (ARE) were defined as larger MR signature on 1-year follow-up MRI and were present in 7 out of 78 (8.9%) cases, receiving a mean BED of 4650 Gy2.47 (median 4650, range 4466–4894). They were clinically relevant with transient hemiparesis in 5 (6.4%) patients, all with BED values higher than 4500 Gy2.47. Tremor improvement was correlated with BED Gy2.47 after SRS for drug-resistant ET. An optimal BED value for tremor improvement was 4300–4500 Gy2.47. ARE appeared for a BED of more than 4500 Gy2.47. Stimulator of interferon genes (STING)-associated vasculopathy with onset in infancy (SAVI) is a very rare autoinflammatory disease related to STING1 mutation. SAVI is mainly characterized by fever attacks and skin and respiratory manifestations such as interstitial lung disease or alveolar hemorrhage. Respiratory involvement occurs in 80% of cases and might progress to severe lung fibrosis and require lung transplantation (LT). Three patients with SAVI who underwent LT have been reported to date. Two of the three patients died months or years after LT due to multiple organ failure or sepsis. However, the diagnosis of SAVI was made after LT, thus preventing the use of targeted therapy, such as the Janus kinase 1 and 2 inhibitor (JAK1/2i) ruxolitinib, which might be beneficial for the respiratory status of these patients. We aimed to report our experience in managing three patients who were followed in three large lung transplantation centers in France and who benefited from ruxolitinib before undergoing LT. Background: Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are at the origin of tumour initiation and progression in gastric adenocarcinoma (GC). However, markers of metastasis-initiating cells remain unidentified in GC. In this study, we characterized CD44 variants expressed in GC and evaluated the tumorigenic and metastatic properties of CD44v3+ cells and their clinical significance in GC patients. Methods: Using GC cell lines and patient-derived xenografts, we evaluated CD44+ and CD44v3+ GC cells molecular signature and their tumorigenic, chemoresistance, invasive and metastatic properties, and expression in patients-derived tissues. Results: CD44v3+ cells, which represented a subpopulation of CD44+ cells, were detected in advanced preneoplastic lesions and presented CSCs chemoresistance and tumorigenic properties in vitro and in vivo. Molecular and functional analyses revealed two subpopulations of gastric CSCs: CD44v3+ CSCs with an epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-like signature, and CD44+/v3– CSCs with an epithelial-like signature; both were tumorigenic but CD44v3+ cells showed higher invasive and metastatic properties in vivo. CD44v3+ cells detected in the primary tumours of GC patients were associated with a worse prognosis. Conclusion: CD44v3 is a marker of a subpopulation of CSCs with metastatic properties in GC. Photovoltaic (PV) energy generation plays a crucial role in the energy transition. Small-scale, rooftop PV installations are deployed at an unprecedented pace, and their safe integration into the grid requires up-to-date, high-quality information. Overhead imagery is increasingly being used to improve the knowledge of rooftop PV installations with machine learning models capable of automatically mapping these installations. However, these models cannot be reliably transferred from one region or imagery source to another without incurring a decrease in accuracy. To address this issue, known as distribution shift, and foster the development of PV array mapping pipelines, we propose a dataset containing aerial images, segmentation masks, and installation metadata (i.e., technical characteristics). We provide installation metadata for more than 28000 installations. We supply ground truth segmentation masks for 13000 installations, including 7000 with annotations for two different image providers. Finally, we provide installation metadata that matches the annotation for more than 8000 installations. Vermiculite and micaceous minerals are relevant Cs+ sorbents in soils and sediments. To understand the bioavailability of Cs+ in soils resulting from multi-cation exchanges, sorption of Cs+ onto clay minerals was performed in batch experiments with solutions containing Ca2+, Mg2+, and K+. A sequence between a vermiculite and various micaceous structures has been carried out by conditioning a vermiculite at various amounts of K. Competing cation exchanges were investigated as function of Cs+ concentration. The contribution of K+ on trace Cs+ desorption is probed by applying different concentrations of K+ on Cs-doped vermiculite and micaceous structures. Cs sorption isotherms at chemical equilibrium were combined with elemental mass balances in solution and structural analyses. Cs+ replaces easily Mg2+ > Ca2+ and competes scarcely with K+. Cs+ is strongly adsorbed on the various matrix, and a K/Cs ratio of about a thousand is required to remobilize Cs+. Cs+ is exchangeable as long as the clay interlayer space remains open to Ca2+. However, an excess of K+, as well as Cs+, in solution leads to the collapse of the interlayer spaces that locks the Cs into the structure. Once K+ and/or Cs+ collapse the interlayer space, the external sorption sites are then particularly involved in Cs sorption. Subsequently, Cs+ preferentially exchanges with Ca2+ rather than Mg2+. Mg2+ is extruded from the interlayer space by Cs+ and K+ adsorption, excluded from short interlayer space and replaced by Ca2+ as Cs+ desorbs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report investigations on the processing by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) of RE2Fe14B (RE = Nd, Pr...) powders obtained by hydrogen decrepitation of decommissioned magnets and the magnetic properties of the consolidated magnets. First experiments have been carried out with a commercial powder to make clear the mechanisms occurring during the powder densification. The magnetic properties of the sintered bulks were measured to determine the SPS cycle resulting in the best saturation and remanent magnetization (Ms and Mr, respectively), coercive field (Hc) and stored magnetic energy (BHmax product). The optimized cycle was subsequently applied to a recycled powder. The properties of the magnets obtained after processing the recycled powder are compared to those made with the commercial one. IL-6 family cytokine leukaemia inhibitory factor (LIF) study has deciphered a variety of effects, in physiology as well as pathology. Despite the sudden arousal in LIF interest in cancers, its study in the gastric cancer (GC) context has been put aside. Only few related studies can be found in literature, most of them investigating IL-6/STAT3 signalling in GC, and not the particular LIF/LIFRβ signalisation. LIF/LIFR has opposing effects depending on the signalling pathways involved. This review relates the pro- and anti-tumorigenic aspects of LIF/LIFR in GC, taking also into account facts from other types of cancer. A better understanding of these issues would undoubtedly help postulate interesting hypotheses and perspectives for future LIF/LIFR study and its use in GC therapies, where options tend to be limited in number and efficiency. Our objective was to describe and discuss management of recent cases of drug hypersensitivity in children reported in a pharmacovigilance center. Two pediatric allergy units conducted a collaborative retrospective analysis of 101 adverse drug reactions reported to a regional pharmacovigilance center between January 2016 and July 2019. Time lapse between hypersensitivity reaction onset and allergy consultation varied from 1 month to 12 years. Sixty-two patients (61.4%) presented with immediate reactions, 11 (10.9%) with non-immediate reactions, and 28 (27.7%) had reactions impossible to classify through medical interview. Overall, 92 children (91%) were explored for simultaneously administered drugs. All 113 prick tests were negative, and 2 were uncertain. Among 108 intradermal tests, 2 were positive to penicillin and to an iodinated contrast medium, 105 were negative, and 1 was uncertain. Overall, 129 drug provocation tests were proposed. Nine provocation tests among 80 were positive (11.25%): 6 to penicillin, 1 to sulfonamide antibiotics, and 2 to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; the remaining 71 were negative. No severe reaction was observed during these tests. Finally, drug allergy was only retained in 11 reported cases (10.9%).Conclusion: These pharmacovigilance reports show the difficulty in defining drug allergy in children only by anamnesis, and that explorations, particularly provocation tests, should take place at a reasonable time lapse after drug hypersensitivity reaction onset. Annual influenza vaccination is recommended for children with chronic diseases. Studies on influenza vaccines, following controversies related to the 2009 H1N1 influenza, are scarce in Europe. Our aim was to evaluate the influenza vaccination coverage in such children in a French tertiary hospital. Secondary objectives were the evaluation of the influenza vaccination coverage trend and the identification of factors influencing the vaccination status. A prospective and descriptive study by questionnaire was performed at the end of 2017 in 402 French hospital outpatients with various underlying chronic diseases eligible to the influenza vaccination. The 2016–2017 vaccination coverage was 46.5%. Figures of 75% or greater were only found in patients with cystic fibrosis and sickle cell disease. CART analysis identified vaccination in the previous year, medical recommendation for vaccination, and maternal influenza vaccination as a child's decisive factors for being vaccinated. Conclusion: Influenza vaccination coverage remains insufficient in children receiving hospital follow-up for chronic diseases. Its implementation clearly depends on pediatricians' recommendation to vaccinate and on the type of chronic disease. Transforming growth factor (TGFβ) is a secreted factor, which accumulates in tissues during many physio- and pathological processes such as embryonic development, wound healing, fibrosis and cancer. In order to analyze the effects of increased microenvironmental TGFβ concentration in vivo, we developed a conditional transgenic mouse model (Flpo/Frt system) expressing bioactive TGFβ in fibroblasts, a cell population present in the microenvironment of almost all tissues. To achieve this, we created the genetically-engineered [Fsp1-Flpo; FSFTGFβCA] mouse model. The Fsp1-Flpo allele consists in the Flpo recombinase under the control of the Fsp1 (fibroblast-specific promoter 1) promoter. The FSFTGFβCA allele consists in a transgene encoding a constitutively active mutant form of TGFβ (TGFβCA) under the control of a Frt-STOP-Frt (FSF) cassette. The FSFTGFβCA allele was created to generate this model, and functionally validated by in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo techniques. [Fsp1-Flpo; FSFTGFβCA] animals do not present any obvious phenotype despite the correct expression of TGFβCA transgene in fibroblasts. This [Fsp1-Flpo; FSFTGFβCA] model is highly pertinent for future studies on the effect of increased microenvironmental bioactive TGFβ concentrations in mice bearing Cre-dependent genetic alterations in other compartments (epithelial or immune compartments for instance). High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) is frequently used in infants with acute viral bronchiolitis outside pediatric intensive care units (PICU). A structured questionnaire was sent out to pediatricians of all public French hospitals with pediatric emergency and/or general pediatric departments on their use of HFNC outside PICU (department using HFNC, number of available devices, monitoring, criteria for initiating or stopping HFNC, and personal comments on HFNC). Of the 166 eligible hospitals, 135 answered (96 general and 39 university hospitals; 81.3%), for a total of 217 answering pediatricians. Seventy-two hospitals (53.3%) used HFNC in acute bronchiolitis outside PICU, particularly, general hospitals (59.4% vs 38.5%), and mostly in pediatric general departments (75%). Continuous patient monitoring with a cardiorespiratory monitor was usual (n = 58, 80%). Nursing staff was responsible for 2.7 children on HFNC and checked vital signs 8.6 times per day. Criteria for HFNC initiation and withdrawal were not standardized. Pediatricians had a positive opinion of HFNC and were willing to extend its use to other diseases. Conclusion: Use of HFNC outside PICU in infants with acute bronchiolitis is now usual, but urgently requires guidelines. Despite multiple recommendations, intramuscular epinephrine is poorly prescribed in emergency department receiving pediatric anaphylaxis. To evaluate the role of severity symptoms on this use, we included all admissions for a diagnosis linked to possible allergy in the two pediatric emergency departments of our institution between January 2010 and December 2015. Selection and analysis were restricted to children under 18 years fulfilling Sampson's criteria for anaphylaxis. We retrospectively ranked these admissions with the Ring and Messmer anaphylaxis severity score and compared the use of epinephrine according to this classification. Among 422,483 admissions, 204 (0.05%) fulfilled the anaphylaxis criteria (170 (83.3%) grade II anaphylaxis, and 34 (16.7%) grade III; mean age 7.9 years). Previous allergy, anaphylaxis, and asthma were found in respectively 60.8%, 36.8%, and 35.1%. Food allergy was the main suspected causal trigger. Epinephrine was used in 32.7% (n = 65/199), before admission (11.4% (n = 23/201)) or in the emergency department (22.2% (n = 45/202)). Epinephrine was more frequently prescribed in grade III than in grade II anaphylaxis (84.8% vs 22.3%, p < 0.001; OR = 19.05 [7.05-54.10]). Upon discharge, epinephrine auto-injectors prescription and allergy referral were rare (31.7% and 44.2%).Conclusion: Pediatricians intuitively adapt their epinephrine use to the severity of the anaphylaxis and contribute to epinephrine underuse in pediatric anaphylaxis. What is known: • Intramuscular epinephrine is the recommended treatment for pediatric anaphylaxis. However, most of the European and North-American studies show a low prescription rate of epinephrine in both prehospital and pediatric emergency department management. • Reasons for such a low prescription rate are unknown. A Morgagni’s hernia is a congenital defect found in the anterior aspect of the diaphragm between the costal and the sternal portions of this muscle. This defect is also referred to as the space of Larrey. It has been reported that 70% of patients with Morgagni’s hernia are female, 90% of the hernias are right-sided, and 92% of the hernias have hernia sacs. This type of hernia is a rare clinical entity and accounts for 3% of all surgically treated diaphragmatic hernias. There are no large retrospective or prospective studies on this topic. This type of hernia is a rare type among adults without a well-described prevalence and without well-established definitive management strategies. There are also few clinical reports about this clinical entity and its surgical treatment. We treated 21 patients with Morgagni’s hernia in a 12-year period, and we report our experience while discussing the surgical treatment of this disease. We performed a retrospective review of the 21 patients who were operated between 2003 and 2015. These patients had undergone surgical repair of Morgagni’s hernia. For each subject, demographic data, symptoms of presentation, physical examination findings, preoperative imaging studies and diagnosis, and surgical procedures were documented. Location of the hernia sac and its contents, postoperative complications, and duration of hospital stay were recorded and evaluated. Twelve patients were females and nine were males. The mean age of patients was 63.85 years. Dyspnea was the most prominent symptom in our patients. Morgagni’s hernias were located on the right side in 19 patients and on the left side in 2 patients. Chest X-ray in 10 patients and abdominal computerized tomography in 17 patients were the major diagnostic tools. Four patients were operated as emergency while others underwent elective surgery (17 patients). Twelve patients were operated with laparoscopy and the remaining nine were operated with the conventional open abdominal technique. Hernia sacs were observed in all of the patients and removed except in four of them. The omentum and the transverse colon were the most commonly seen organs in hernia sacs. Hernia defects were repaired with primary sutures in four patients (all open cases) and primary closure supported with mesh in six patients (four laparoscopic, two open cases). In the remaining 11 patients, hernia defects were closed with synthetic meshes (eight laparoscopic, three open cases). Mean postoperative hospital stay was 9.8 days. No recurrence was observed in any patients. Only one of our patients died during follow-up. In Morgagni’s hernias, surgical intervention is necessary as the hernia may cause complications such as strangulation of the colon or intestines. Recurring outbursts associated with matter flowing onto compact stellar remnants (such as black holes, neutron stars and white dwarfs) in close binary systems provide a way of constraining the poorly understood accretion process. The light curves of these outbursts are shaped by the efficiency of angular-momentum (and thus mass) transport in the accretion disks, which has traditionally been encoded in a viscosity parameter, α. Numerical simulations of the magneto-rotational instability that is believed to be the physical mechanism behind this transport yield values of α of roughly 0.1-0.2, consistent with values determined from observations of accreting white dwarfs. Equivalent viscosity parameters have hitherto not been estimated for disks around neutron stars or black holes. Here we report the results of an analysis of archival X-ray light curves of 21 outbursts in black-hole X-ray binaries. By applying a Bayesian approach to a model of accretion, we determine corresponding values of α of around 0.2-1.0. These high values may be interpreted as an indication either of a very high intrinsic rate of angular-momentum transport in the disk, which could be sustained by the magneto-rotational instability only if a large-scale magnetic field threads the disk, or that mass is being lost from the disk through substantial outflows, which strongly shape the outburst in the black-hole X-ray binary. The lack of correlation between our estimates of α and the accretion state of the binaries implies that such outflows can remove a substantial fraction of the disk mass in all accretion states and therefore suggests that the outflows correspond to magnetically driven disk winds rather than thermally driven ones, which require specific radiative conditions. Preserving cultural heritage is one of the most intricate jobs that need to be performed with a lot of caution. Transporting artworks on the other hand, i.e., getting them out of their home museums and exposing them in uncontrollable and dynamic environments, makes preservation even harder. So far, museums try to contend against the dynamic context during transportation by employing high-class transport cases. However, no attempts are made to exploit the science of data. In this paper, we make use of the ubiquity of sensors and IoT devices, combined with advanced predictive analytics in order to manage processes based on their context and to anticipate challenging run-time violations. Children's asthma is multifactorial. Environmental factors like air pollution exposure, meteorological conditions, allergens, and viral infections are strongly implicated. However, place of residence has rarely been investigated in connection with these factors. The primary aim of our study was to measure the impact of particulate matter (PM), assessed close to the children's homes, on asthma-related pediatric emergency hospital visits within the Bouches-du-Rhône area in 2013. In a nested case-control study on 3- to 18-year-old children, each control was randomly matched on the emergency room visit day, regardless of hospital. Each asthmatic child was compared to 15 controls. PM10 and PM2.5, meteorological conditions, pollens, and viral data were linked to ZIP code and analyzed by purpose of emergency visit. A total of 68,897 visits were recorded in children, 1182 concerning asthma. Short-term exposure to PM10 measured near children's homes was associated with excess risk of asthma emergency visits (adjusted odds ratio 1.02 (95% CI 1.01-1.04; p = 0.02)). Male gender, young age, and temperature were other risk factors. Conversely, wind speed was a protective factor.Conclusion: PM10 and certain meteorological conditions near children's homes increased the risk of emergency asthma-related hospital visits in 3- to 18-year-old children in Bouches-du-Rhône. Objective: To retrospectively compare semi-automated and manual volume measurements of malignant liver tumours and inter- and intra-observer variability using commercially available software.Methods: This study was performed on 60 consecutive patients with untreated liver metastases (30) and HCCs (30), i.e. 92 lesions (49 metastases, 43 HCCs) using hepatic MDCT. Lesion volumes were manually measured independently by two radiologists and semi-automatically by the same two radiologists and a technician. Those measurements were repeated on 20 patients (10 metastases and 10 HCCs) a week later. An independent operator timed all the measurements. Using the Spearman correlation coefficient and Bland-Altman plots, statistical analyses were performed.Results: Liver lesion volumes obtained with semi-automated and manual methods were well correlated (Spearman, r = 0.98 and 0.91). Their agreement was high for intra-observer measurements with the semi-automated method (Spearman, r = 0.91 and 0.94). The agreement was lower for inter-observer measurements with both methods (Spearman, r = 0.87 for semi-automated and 0.91 for manual). The semi-automated method significantly reduced the post-processing duration (23s ± 19s vs. 33s ± 11s, p value <0.0001).Conclusion: In our study, semi-automated volume analysis of malignant liver tumours correlated well with the manual method. Purpose: Busulfan-melphalan high-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation is an essential consolidation treatment of high-risk neuroblastoma in children. Main treatment limitation is hepatic veno-occlusive disease, the most severe and frequent extra-hematological toxicity. This life threatening toxicity has been related to a drug interaction between busulfan and melphalan which might be increased by prior disturbance of iron homeostasis, i.e. an increased plasma ferritin level. Methods: We performed an experimental study of busulfan and melphalan pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetics in iron overloaded mice. Results: Iron excess dramatically increased the toxicity of melphalan or busulfan melphalan combination in mice but it did not modify the clearance of either busulfan or melphalan. We show that prior busulfan treatment impairs the clearance of melphalan. This clearance alteration was exacerbated in iron overloaded mice demonstrating a pharmacokinetic interaction. Additionally, iron overload increased melphalan toxicity without altering its pharmacokinetics, suggesting a pharmacodynamic interaction between iron and melphalan. Based on iron homeostasis disturbance, we postulated that prior induction of ferritin, through Nrf2 activation after oxidative stress, may be associated with the alteration of melphalan metabolism. Conclusion: Iron overload increases melphalan and busulfan-melphalan toxicity through a pharmacodynamic interaction and reveals a pharmacokinetic drug interaction between busulfan and melphalan. Unlabelled: The influence of the generalization of cystic fibrosis newborn screening (CFNBS) in France on sweat test (ST) prescription is unknown. In this French retrospective, descriptive, and multicenter study, we studied the indications, number, methods, and results of STs prescribed by a pediatric pulmonologist in children who had a negative CFNBS and an ST for respiratory symptoms in 2012. We included 502 children with 523 STs, performed with four different methods. The main indication was asthma (71.3 %), then chronic cough (52.4 %), atypical lower airway infections (42.2 %), and bronchiectasis (7 %). Four children had a diagnosis of CF (0.8 %), all presenting with chronic productive cough and recurrent respiratory infections.Conclusion: Asthma is the most frequent indication of ST in our cohort. Because of the systematic CFNBS in France, some prescriptions should be avoided, particularly in case of severe or moderate asthma with no other associated symptom. Exposure to tobacco smoke has been not evaluated in children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). We evaluate the association of in utero smoking (IUS) and environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) with the respiratory events of BPD and non-BPD children. Two hundred sixty-two children born before 35 weeks of gestational age (GA) and regularly followed up in our regional network for preterms were enrolled. They were paired according to their BPD status, their gestational age and birth weight (131 children with BPD and 131 without BPD, 28 mean weeks GA; mean weight 1000 g). Respiratory data were obtained prospectively during their first 2 years of life. A complementary questionnaire was completed by the parents about their child's respiratory health at the age of 2, their home environment, and tobacco status. IUS concerned 12.6 %; ETS, 48.8 % (67 % in BPD children treated with oxygen at home). No further influence on respiratory outcome could be found by exposure to intrauterine smoke or extrauterine tobacco smoke in this patient sample. Conclusion: IUS and ETS exposures are as high in preterm children as in a general pediatric population. The highest exposure occurs among BPD infants treated with oxygen at home. Psychotherapists often encounter generational differences between themselves and their adolescent clients. Understanding these differences can enhance the communication, interventions, and trust between the therapist and adolescent client. The use of text messages in the lives of adolescents has increased. While there is emerging literature on the significance of texting for an adolescent's feelings of connection with his/her peers, much less is known about the addition of this form of communication within counseling sessions. This paper uses one case of conjoint therapy with a father and daughter to explore these issues. The role of texting for the adolescent is explored, the role the texting inhabited in the sessions is discussed, and clinical significance of social media on psychotherapy are explored. Helicobacter pylori infection is now recognized as the main and specific infectious cause of cancer in the world. It is responsible for gastric adenocarcinomas of both intestinal and diffuse types, which are the long-term consequences of the chronic infection of the gastric mucosa. Case-control studies have shown an association between the two, recognized as early as 1994 and further substantiated by interventional studies in which H. pylori eradication has led to the prevention of at least part of the gastric cancers. Experimental studies have highlighted the role of bone marrow-derived cells (BMDCs) and particularly mesenchymal stem cells, in the neoplastic process in about a quarter of the cases and possibly an epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in the other cases. Different studies have confirmed that chronic infection with H. pylori induces a chronic inflammation and subsequent damage of the gastric epithelial mucosa, leading to BMDC recruitment. Once recruited, these cells home and differentiate by cell-cell fusion with local gastric epithelial cells, bearing local stem cell failure and participating in tissue regeneration. The context of chronic infection and inflammation leads to an EMT and altered tissue regeneration and differentiation from both local epithelial stem cells and BMDC. EMT induces the emergence of CD44+ cells possessing mesenchymal and stem cell properties, resulting in metaplastic and dysplastic lesions to give rise, after additional epigenetic and mutational events, to the emergence of cancer stem cells (CSCs) and adenocarcinoma. In recent years, many solutions based on interactive sonification have been introduced for enhancing sport training. Few of them have been assessed in terms of efficiency or design. In a previous study, we performed a quantitative evaluation of four models for the sonification of elite rowing in a non-interactive context. For the present article, we conducted on-water experiments to investigate the effects of some of these models on two kinematic quantities: stroke rate value and fluctuations in boat velocity. To this end, elite rowers interacted with discrete and continuous auditory displays in two experiments. A method for computing an average rowing cycle is introduced, together with a measure of velocity fluctuations. Participants answered to questionnaires and interviews to assess the degree of acceptance of the different models and to reveal common trends and individual preferences. No significant effect of sonification could be determined in either of the two experiments. The measure of velocity fluctuations was found to depend linearly on stroke rate. Participants provided feedback about their aesthetic preferences and functional needs during interviews, allowing us to improve the models for future experiments to be conducted over longer periods. Objective: To deepen the understanding of the life course of refugees this study explores the question: when do Cambodian elders perceive the beginning of old age? Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with 32 Cambodians, age range 53-82, who attended an elder day center in an urban setting in Massachusetts. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed using the modified grounded theory approach. Results: The analysis revealed that the participants primarily reported two determinants to defining when old age begins: 1) the body 'has too many illnesses' due to harsh working conditions; and 2) social role transition into grandparent. Discussion: This study extends research on cultural differences in aging, specifically identifying the cultural difference in the definition of when 'old age' begins. Age is culturally derived and creates expectations for social roles, health, self-identity, and behavior. The methylation of O-methylguanine DNA methyltransferase ( MGMT) gene promoter is a key biological marker in clinical neuro-oncology. Nevertheless, there is no consensus concerning the best technique for its assessment. In a recent study comparing five methods to analyze MGMT status, we found that the best prediction of survival was obtained with a pyrosequencing (PSQ) test assessing methylation of 5 CpGs (CpGs 74-78). In the present study we extended our PSQ analysis to 16 CpGs (CpGs 74-89) identified as critical for transcriptional control of the gene. The predictive value of the methylation levels at each CpG, as well as the mean methylation levels of selected sets of consecutive CpGs was tested in a cohort of 89 de novo glioblastoma patients who had received standard of care treatment (Stupp protocol). Using an optimal risk cut-off, each CpG or combination of CpGs, was associated with overall survival (OS) and progression free survival. The best predictive models for OS after stratification on performance score and age were obtained with CpG 89, CpG 84 and mean methylation of CpG 84-88 (Hazard ratio (HR), 0.31; p < 0.0001). The improvement compared to the predictive value of the test analyzing average methylation of CpG 74-78 (HR, 0.32; p < 0.0001) was however marginal. We recommend to test CpGs 74-78 when analyzing MGMT methylation status by PSQ because a commercial kit that has successfully been used in several studies is available, allowing reproducible and comparable results from one laboratory to another. After initial claims and a long hiatus, it is now established that several binary stars emit high- (0.1–100 GeV) and very high-energy (>100 GeV) gamma rays. A new class has emerged called “gamma-ray binaries”, since most of their radiated power is emitted beyond 1 MeV. Accreting X-ray binaries, novae and a colliding wind binary ( η Car) have also been detected—“related systems” that confirm the ubiquity of particle acceleration in astrophysical sources. Do these systems have anything in common? What drives their high-energy emission? How do the processes involved compare to those in other sources of gamma rays: pulsars, active galactic nuclei, supernova remnants? I review the wealth of observational and theoretical work that have followed these detections, with an emphasis on gamma-ray binaries. I present the current evidence that gamma-ray binaries are driven by rotation-powered pulsars. Binaries are laboratories giving access to different vantage points or physical conditions on a regular timescale as the components revolve on their orbit. I explain the basic ingredients that models of gamma-ray binaries use, the challenges that they currently face, and how they can bring insights into the physics of pulsars. I discuss how gamma-ray emission from microquasars provides a window into the connection between accretion–ejection and acceleration, while η Car and novae raise new questions on the physics of these objects—or on the theory of diffusive shock acceleration. Indeed, explaining the gamma-ray emission from binaries strains our theories of high-energy astrophysical processes, by testing them on scales and in environments that were generally not foreseen, and this is how these detections are most valuable. The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients has led to the use of colistin drug and the emergence of colistin-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. The aim of this study was to compare the disk diffusion and Etest methods for colistin susceptibility testing on MDR bacteria associated with CF from Marseille, France. Forty-nine MDR clinical isolates (27 Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, 22 Achromobacter xylosoxidans) were used in this study. Disk diffusion and Etest assays were used to assess the reliability of these two techniques. For S. maltophilia, 25 out of 27 isolates had low minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs, 0.125-0.75 mg/L), whereas two isolates displayed high MICs (32 mg/L). Similarly, 19 out of 22 A. xylosoxidans isolates had low MICs (0.75-3.0 mg/L), whereas three isolates had high MICs (32-256 mg/L). The diameters of zone inhibition with a 50-μg colistin disk displayed a good correlation with the MICs obtained by the Etest. Susceptible and resistant strains were eventually separated using a disk diffusion assay at a cut-off of ≤12 mm for a 50-μg disk. Colistin displayed excellent activity against S. maltophilia and A. xylosoxidans and the disk diffusion assay could be confidently used to determine the susceptibility to colistin for MDR Gram-negative bacteria in the context of CF. The government of Ghana has designed various initiatives to achieve the Millennium Development Goals on education and the Education for All goals. Despite these initiatives, student outcomes continue to be poorer than desired. Although access to education has improved, student dropout remains a problem and student scores on achievement tests remain low, along with their rates of progression to higher grades. The authors propose a program of mentoring, peer counseling, and parent involvement for children from first through ninth grade. They believe this program is essential to sustain the government's initiatives on education, and has the potential to achieve the educational outcomes that Ghana and many developing countries require to meet the goals of the EFA agenda. In 1970s, taurine deficiency was reported to induce photoreceptor degeneration in cats and rats. Recently, we found that taurine deficiency contributes to the retinal toxicity of vigabatrin, an antiepileptic drug. However, in this toxicity, retinal ganglion cells were degenerating in parallel to cone photoreceptors. The aim of this study was to re-assess a classic mouse model of taurine deficiency following a treatment with guanidoethane sulfonate (GES), a taurine transporter inhibitor to determine whether retinal ganglion cells are also affected. GES treatment induced a significant reduction in the taurine plasma levels and a lower weight increase. At the functional level, photopic electroretinograms were reduced indicating a dysfunction in the cone pathway. A change in the autofluorescence appearance of the eye fundus was explained on histological sections by an increased autofluorescence of the retinal pigment epithelium. Although the general morphology of the retina was not affected, cell damages were indicated by the general increase in glial fibrillary acidic protein expression. When cell quantification was achieved on retinal sections, the number of outer/inner segments of cone photoreceptors was reduced (20 %) as the number of retinal ganglion cells (19 %). An abnormal synaptic plasticity of rod bipolar cell dendrites was also observed in GES-treated mice. These results indicate that taurine deficiency can not only lead to photoreceptor degeneration but also to retinal ganglion cell loss. Cone photoreceptors and retinal ganglion cells appear as the most sensitive cells to taurine deficiency. We present here a mobile phone application called MoodifierLive which aims at using expressive music performances for the sonification of expressive gestures through the mapping of the phone's accelerometer data to the performance parameters (i.e. tempo, sound level, and articulation). The application, and in particular the sonification principle, is described in detail. An experiment was carried out to evaluate the perceived matching between the gesture and the music performance that it produced, using two distinct mappings between gestures and performance. The results show that the application produces consistent performances, and that the mapping based on data collected from real gestures works better than one defined a priori by the authors. This paper evaluates three different interactive sonifications of dyadic coordinated human rhythmic activity. An index of phase synchronisation of gestures was chosen as coordination metric. The sonifications are implemented as three prototype applications exploiting mobile devices: Sync'n'Moog, Sync'n'Move, and Sync'n'Mood. Sync'n'Moog sonifies the phase synchronisation index by acting directly on the audio signal and applying a nonlinear time-varying filtering technique. Sync'n'Move intervenes on the multi-track music content by making the single instruments emerge and hide. Sync'n'Mood manipulates the affective features of the music performance. Many aspects of sonification represent potential benefits for the practice of sports. Taking advantage of the characteristics of auditory perception, interactive sonification offers promising opportunities for enhancing the training of athletes. The efficient learning and memorizing abilities pertaining to the sense of hearing, together with the strong coupling between auditory and sensorimotor systems, make the use of sound a natural field of investigation in quest of efficiency optimization in individual sports at a high level. This study presents an application of sonification to elite rowing, introducing and evaluating four sonification models. The rapid development of mobile technology capable of efficiently handling numerical information offers new possibilities for interactive auditory display. Thus, these models have been developed under the specific constraints of a mobile platform, from data acquisition to the generation of a meaningful sound feedback. In order to evaluate the models, two listening experiments have then been carried out with elite rowers. Results show a good ability of the participants to efficiently extract basic characteristics of the sonified data, even in a non-interactive context. Qualitative assessment of the models highlights the need for a balance between function and aesthetics in interactive sonification design.
