Flexible and small-scale energy storage technologies are critical for future applications such as wearable electronics. In this context, paper has emerged as a lightweight, low-cost, and ecologically friendly flexible substrate for energy storage devices. This paper presents a simple method for fabricating a micro-supercapacitor (MSC) using a wax printing approach that can achieve high resolution without requiring complex processes. In addition, the developed MnO2–Au-paper (MAP) microelectrodes with high porosity exhibit enhanced charge and ion transfer while maintaining a stable flexibility. The solid-state micro-supercapacitor delivers a very large areal capacitance of 624.32 mF cm−2 at 0.2 mA cm−2 and is stable under external stress. The highest energy and power densities obtained for the present MSCs (55.5 μWh cm−2 and 1.59 mW cm−2, respectively), are much larger than those previously reported for pseudocapacitive MSCs, including flexible ones. Cellulosic-based materials such as hemp fabric and paper have combined characteristics of renewability, biodegradability, flexibility, and recyclability. However, regular products are not suitable for use in unconventional applications due to inherent limitations, and accordingly, enabling new capabilities is a necessity. To this end, the conversion of regular hemp fabric and paper into high-strength products with hydrophobic function via surface engineering was explored. The fluorinated waterborne polyurethane (FWPU) emulsions were first synthesized as functional coatings by in-situ polymerization. The structure and properties of the FWPU emulsion and film were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, TG, and XPS. The results showed that the grafting of perfluorooctanol imparts WPU film excellent hydrophobicity, and the water contact angle increases from 71.2° to 105.9°. After the FWPU coating, the water contact angles of the hemp fabric and paper increase from 0° to 117.1° and 112.8°, respectively. Quite encouragingly, the coating generation of waterborne polyurethane-derived functional additives led to the increase of mechanical strength by more than 23% and 82%, in the case of qualitative filter paper and hemp fabric. Meanwhile, the folding strength of filter paper is increased by 132 times. Environmental and health concerns are driving food packaging to reduce the use of poly- or perfluorinated compounds and petroleum-based polymers. Here, we successfully obtained good oil-proof paper by combining cellulose nanofibril (CNF) film with filter paper through film transfer. The process was not only facile but also did not require chemical reagents other than water. To achieve the kit number 12, the basis weight of the CNF film was 2.1 g/m2, which was much less than the amount required for coating. The calendering process further reduced the pores thus improving the oil resistance of the film transfer paper. At a calendering pressure of 20 N/mm, only 1.4 g/m2 of the CNF film was required for kit number 12. This study provides a new way for the application of CNF in the field of oil resistance. Up to now, it is always a delicate and challenging task to clean and protect Xuan paper ink painting. Xuan paper is composed of cellulose with a rough surface and easy to absorb dust, which leads to poor cleaning effect and irreversible damage in traditional cleaning process. Hydrogel is one of the most effective tools to clean the artworks. However, in the practice of cleaning Xuan paper, most hydrogels cannot achieve fine cleaning result due to the interfacial adhesion issues. Herein, to protectively and effectively clean Xuan paper, using physical yet strong poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(N-(2-hydroxyethyl) acrylamide) (PVA/PHEAA) hydrogel with suitable stiffness as the model, the interfacial adhesion between hydrogel and Xuan paper was systematically investigated, and various technologies were used to evaluate the cleaning effect. A critical interfacial adhesive energy (< 4 J/m2) is found to achieve the protective and effective cleaning purpose. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to estimate the adhesion of hydrogel on the cleaning of paper artwork, which will provide a new viewport in the conservation practice. Key summary points: Aim: The recent World Guidelines for Falls Prevention and Management provide several recommendations on how to prevent medication-related falls. Findings: Medication review and deprescribing are key interventions in falls prevention and should be structured, personalized, and patient-centered. Preferably, the medication review should be conducted as part of a comprehensive geriatric assessment. Message: Improved information sharing between various prescribers, deprescribing recommendations implemented in guidelines, and increased education and training for health care professionals are warranted to facilitate the deprescribing process. Falls prevention and management in older adults is a critical global challenge. One of the key risk factors for falls is the use of certain medications. Therefore, to prevent medication-related falls, the following is recommended in the recent World Guidelines for Falls Prevention and Management: (1) assess for fall history and the risk of falls before prescribing potential fall-risk-increasing drugs (FRIDs), (2) use a validated, structured screening and assessment tool to identify FRIDs when performing a medication review, (3) include medication review and appropriate deprescribing of FRIDs as a part of the multifactorial falls prevention intervention, and (4) in long-term care residents, if multifactorial intervention cannot be conducted due to limited resources, the falls prevention strategy should still always include deprescribing of FRIDs. In the present statement paper, the working group on medication-related falls of the World Guidelines for Falls Prevention and Management, in collaboration with the European Geriatric Medicine Society (EuGMS) Task and Finish group on FRIDs, outlines its position on how to implement and execute these recommendations in clinical practice. Preferably, the medication review should be conducted as part of a comprehensive geriatric assessment to produce a personalized and patient-centered assessment. Furthermore, the major pitfall of the published intervention studies so far is the suboptimal implementation of medication review and deprescribing. Nanozymes are nanomaterials that possess intrinsic enzyme mimicking activity. In this study, the application of silver nanoparticles coated filter paper (AgNPs/FP) that exhibits a peroxidase-like catalytic activity as a potential sensor is reported. A simple chemical reduction method was used to produce AgNPs/FP. The formation of the particles on filter paper were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). In the presence of hydrogen peroxide, AgNPs/FP oxidized the colorless o-phenylenediamine (OPD) and 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) solutions to a yellow colored 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) and deep blue colored oxidized TMB (oxTMB), respectively. In the presence of thiocyanate, however, the peroxidase-like activity was inhibited in a concentration dependent manner. This makes the AgNPs/FP a promising catalyst and employed for colorimetric detection of thiocyanate via inhibition of the peroxidase-like activity. Due to the hydrophilic nature of paper mulch, it is easy to absorb water during use, which will reduce its mechanical properties and durability, thus affecting its performance. Therefore, the development of paper mulch is hindered. In this paper, in order to improve the hydrophobic performance of paper mulch, we successfully prepared superhydrophobic silicon dioxide/paper mulch by simple, efficient and environmentally friendly solution immersion method without the introduction of adhesive. The contact Angle and rolling Angle between the prepared super hydrophobic paper mulch and water are 156.4° and 1.8°, respectively. The water drop is easy to roll on its surface, and has excellent water drop bouncing performance, which can play an excellent water-repellent function. Studies have shown that the superhydrophobicity of silicon dioxide/paper mulch is less affected by its surface roughness, mainly because the surface covered by a layer of silicon dioxide reduces the surface energy of the paper mulch, and the silicon dioxide on the surface of the paper mulch is enough to reduce the damage of aging on the paper mulch. In addition, the decrease in the contact angle of the SiO2/paper mulch and the increase in the rolling angle after aging are due to the decrease in the amount of SiO2 adhesion on the surface of the paper mulch and the increase in the degree of exposure of fiber bundles. Laccases (EC 1.10.3.2) are considered one of the most prominent multicopper enzymes that exhibit the inherent properties of oxidizing a range of phenolic substrates. Mostly, reported laccases have been isolated from the plants and fungi species, whereas bacterial laccases are yet to be explored. Bacterial laccases have numerous distinctive properties over fungal laccases, including stability at high temperatures and high pH. This study includes the isolation of bacteria through the soil sample collected from the paper and pulp industry; the highest laccase-producing bacteria was identified as Bhargavaea bejingensis, using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The extracellular and intracellular activities after 24 h incubation were 1.41 U/mL and 4.95 U/mL, respectively. The laccase-encoding gene of the bacteria was sequenced; moreover, the in vitro translated protein was bioinformatically characterized and asserted that the laccase produced by the bacteria Bhargavaea bejingensis was structurally and sequentially homologous to the CotA protein of Bacillus subtilis. The enzyme laccase produced from B. bejingensis was classified as three-domain laccase with several copper-binding residues, where a few crucial copper-binding residues of the laccase enzyme were also predicted. Pine needle waste-based ethylene scavenging paper was developed by incorporating nanomaterial halloysite nanotube (HNT) and micro-fibrillated cellulose (MFC). The ethylene scavenging capacity was evaluated with the banana storage in the developed nanocomposite paper. The quality of bananas, such as color, physical appearance, total soluble solids (TSS), pH, and weight loss, was evaluated during banana storage. The PN/MFC/HNT 30% based packaging system delayed the ripening and senescence process. The color of banana, TSS, and pH was stable during the storage period in the PN/MFC/HNT 30%. In contrast, the banana in control PN packaging has accelerated quality decaying have been observed. The ethylene content was in the control PN packaging recorded at 633.67 μL L−1 and 424.12 μL L−1 in the PN/MFC/HNT 30% package on the last day of storage analysis. The nanocomposite paper with the waste pine needle with HNT and MFC has observed an excellent ethylene scavenging capacity with more than 200 μL L−1 on the 10th day of storage analysis. As a promising technology, interfacial solar steam technology has been widely recognized as an effective way to solve the shortage of energy and water, especially in remote areas. Whole roll of toilet paper (TP) is composed of well orderly layer-by-layer paper, which consisted by cellulose fiber. Here, a 3D solar steam generator, which is prepared by carbonized TP with the help of high-temperature carbonization, and NaOH activated under inert atmosphere is firstly demonstrated with excellent freshwater production capacity. Thanks to the good ordered layered structure, which consisted by porous carbon fiber, the evaporation speed of obtained evaporator is up to 3.37 kg m−2 h−1 under one sun (1000 W m−2) in laboratory, and the average value of 20.4 ± 2.98 kg m−2 day−1 in a 20 consecutive days outdoor experiment for treatment of stimulate seawater, respectively. The demonstrated 3D evaporator for per square meter can meet the drinking water demand of more than 10 people. This work not only provides an environmentally friendly, low-cost, easy-to-industrialize preparation for solar assistance interfacial evaporator, but also opens a promising approach for utilizing unique structure of commercialized available artificial materials and technologies to produce fresh water from seawater. Efficient removal of mold stains becomes an important research topic for paper conservation. In this study, a cleaning scheme based on the combination of bioenzymes and biosurfactants was explored. Morphological and molecular biology identifications were first jointly applied to identify the dominant strains sampled from five ancient books that are stored in the same environment. Cellulolytic experiments were then conducted to evaluate the cellulose degradation ability of the strains according to the cellulolytic digestive index. Finally, paper Mockups for the ancient books were constructed to investigate the most effective combination of bioenzymes and biosurfactants in removing mold stains as well as its effect on the paper's physical properties. The result concluded that the combination of 3% papain, 7% of sophorolipid or 7% of betaine, and distilled water, achieved optimal stain removal effect with over 50% cleaning rate at 35 °C, after 30 min of infiltration. The maximum color difference of the paper material after cleaning was around 0.60, pH was between 7.45 and 7.79, and no significant changes in tensile strength were observed. At the same time, Sophorolipid and Betaine both have superior deacidification, anti-acidification, anti-aging, and reinforcement capabilities, which can provide extra support to the fibrous structure in addition to cleaning the paper materials. Small, single-layer microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (µPADs) offer potential for a range of point-of-care applications; however, they have been limited to low flow rates. Here, we investigate the role of laser cutting paper channels in maximizing flow rate in small profile devices with limited fluid volumes. We demonstrate that branching, laser-cut grooves can provide a 59.23–73.98% improvement in flow rate over a single cut, and a 435% increase over paper alone. These design considerations can be applied to more complex microfluidic devices with the aim of increasing the flow rate, and could be used in stand-alone channels for self-pumping. An efficient process for recycling paper and cardboard wastes via dissolution in N,N-dimethylacetamide/lithium chloride (DMAc/LiCl) system and regeneration from solutions to obtain hydrogels has been developed. Pretreatment of waste paper has been carried out by thermal defibrillation of waste paper in water and homogenization to obtain fibrous samples. The dissolution of fiber materials was performed in two ways by varying the process temperature and the way the reagents were added. Regeneration from solutions was carried out by spontaneous gelation without the use of antisolvents, at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. As a result, hydrogels were obtained which differed in color and transparency depending on feedstock. The physicochemical properties of the hydrogels were characterized. It was shown that they were steady in an aqueous medium, capable of retaining a significant amount of water (over 4000 wt %), and they were porous systems which was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. According to a wide-angle X-ray scattering, the crystallographic structure of the pristine waste paper samples corresponded to a structural modification of cellulose I. Regenerated samples as freeze-dried hydrogels had the structure of cellulose II. A functional and an elemental composition studied with FTIR spectroscopy and an energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis characterized these hydrogels as the cellulose samples containing small amount of inorganic impurities. Eco-friendly acid base indicators (anthocyanins) are always a center of attention in quantitative volumetric analysis as substitute for synthetic dye indicators. The purpose of the study is to promote utilization of Punica granatum (pomegranate) peel biomass by developing a novel eco-friendly acid–base indicator for titrimetric analysis. Pomegranate peel extract (PPEx) was prepared by ultrasonic probe sonication, a green method for extraction. The obtained extracts were evaluated for total phenol, anthocyanin content and the color change ability analysis (CIEL*a*b* analysis). The pKa of PPEx was determined, the effectiveness of PPEx as indicator was established in different acid–base titrations and compared with conventional synthetic indicators phenolphthalein and methyl orange. The aspirin powder and tablet (Ecosprin) were analyzed by using PPEx as indicator. An attempt was also made to develop PPEx pH indicator paper. The aqueous and ethanolic PPEx prepared by ultrasonic probe sonication contains 657.1 ± 21 and 718.1 ± 21 mg/LGAE of total phenols and 38.49 ± 0.83 and 42.91 ± 2.10 mgC3G/100gm of anthocyanins, respectively.The PPEx and pH indicator paper shows color change with the pH of solution. The pKa of PPEx was 7.14. PPEx was served as eco-friendly substitute for phenolphthalein and methyl orange indicators. PPEx was effective to analyze aspirin. With the exponential growth of the volume of scientific literatures, academic evaluation is becoming one of the important problems of scientometrics. Considering the influence of disruption of papers, in this paper, we propose a disruption based PageRank (DPRank) model to rank the scientific significance of scientific papers. The disruption value of a paper is calculated by the local network structure of the paper in the citation network. DPRank model treats each citation differently based on paper's temporal information and disruption value. In DPRank model, the scores delivered from a paper's upstream nodes decay exponentially with the time gap between the publication time and reference time, and the decay rate is proportional to the paper's disruption value. We use the APS data set and some highly valued papers as benchmarks to evaluate the performance of the proposed DPRank model. The experimental results show that the DPRank model has a relatively better performance for both old and newly published papers, and can outperform other methods in identifying the benchmark papers. This paper presents the case of an adjunct university professor to illustrate the dilemma of using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to grade student papers. The hypothetical case discusses the benefits of using a commercial AI service to grade student papers—including discretion, convenience, pedagogical merits of consistent feedback for students, and advances made in the field that yield high-quality work—all of which are achieved quickly. Arguments against using AI to grade student papers involve cost, privacy, legality, and ethics. In this research, we design and implement a small, convenient, and noninvasive paper-based microfluidic sweat sensor that can simultaneously detect multiple key biomarkers in human sweat. The origami structure of the chip includes colorimetric and electrochemical sensing regions. Different colorimetric sensing regions are modified with specific chromogenic reagents to selectively identify glucose, lactate, uric acid, and magnesium ions in sweat, as well as the pH value. The regions of electrochemical sensing detect cortisol in sweat by molecular imprinting. The entire chip is composed of hydrophilically and hydrophobically treated filter paper, and 3D microfluidic channels are constructed by using folding paper. The thread-based channels formed after the hydrophilic and hydrophobic modifications are used to control the rate of sweat flow, which in turn can be used to control the sequence of reactions in the differently developing colored regions to ensure that signals of the best color can be captured simultaneously by the colorimetric sensing regions. Finally, the results of on-body experiments verify the reliability of the proposed sweat sensor and its potential for the noninvasive identification of a variety of sweat biomarkers. The valorization of paper mill sludge (PMS) is the main goal of this study. The emissions of PMS continue to increase at global scale, especially from packaging paper and board sectors. The raw sludge was used to prepare an adsorbent to remove toxic pollutants from wastewater, the methylene blue (MB), an organic dye. Firstly, the physico-chemical characterization of PMS was done determining the crystalline phases of PMS fibers, the content of main elements, and the pH zero point charge, which was determined at around pH 7. The adsorption of MB on PMS powder was studied at 18 °C with an agitation of 200 rpm, being the best operating conditions 30 min of contact time, 250 mg L−1 of initial MB concentration and 0.05 g in 25 mL of adsorbent dose. Experimental data of MB adsorption was fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equations. The Langmuir model was more accurate for the equilibrium data of MB adsorption at pH 5.1. The PFOM and PSOM were adjusted to experimental adsorption kinetics data, being PSOM, which describes better the MB adsorption by PMS powder. This was confirmed by calculating the maximum adsorption capacity with PSOM, which was 42.7 mg g−1, being nearly similar of the experimental value of 43.5 mg g−1. The analysis of adsorption thermodynamics showed that the MB was adsorbed exothermically with a ΔH0 = − 20.78 kJ mol−1, and spontaneously with ΔG0 from − 0.99 to − 6.38 kJ mol−1 in the range of temperature from 291 to 363 K, respectively. These results confirm that the sludge from paper industry can be used as biosorbent with remarkable adsorption capacity and low cost for the treatment of wastewater. Fly ash–lime–gypsum bricks are an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient alternative to burnt clay bricks. Nowadays, the scarcity of fly ash and lime adversely affects the production of fly ash bricks. To mitigate this, the current study examines incinerated paper mill sludge ash as a supplement to fly ash and lime. In the current study, in blend 1, coal fly ash is replaced by incinerated paper mill sludge ash (2.5–30 wt%), and in blend 2, lime is completely replaced by incinerated paper mill sludge ash (2.5–15 wt%). Based on Indian standards, bricks were tested for compressive strength, water absorption, weight density, percentage voids, efflorescence, drying shrinkage, dynamic modulus of elasticity, and impact energy. Before developing bricks, the materials have to be examined by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry differential thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscope techniques. Results from X-ray diffraction showed that higher replacement of incinerated paper mill sludge ash does not produce any phase transformation and merely improves porosity, which reduces weight. Higher replacement of incinerated paper mill sludge ash leads to a reduction in strength and a higher water requirement. The study found that incorporating incinerated paper mill sludge ash at replacement 2.5–15 wt% in blend 1 and 2.5–5 wt% in blend 2 satisfied the building brick requirements. By incorporating incinerated paper mill sludge ash into bricks, the brick industry can produce sustainable bricks that utilize resources effectively. Congestion is a well-known economic phenomenon in which excessive inputs lead to a decrease in the maximum possible outputs. This study analyzes the relationship between congestion and overinvestment using a data envelopment analysis framework to reveal that some congestion can be eliminated by increasing inputs. The proposed approach classifies congestion into two categories, relative and absolute congestion, depending on the possibility of eliminating congestion by increasing inputs. Corresponding methods for identifying and measuring congestion are proposed and employed for empirical analyses examining China's papermaking and paper products industry. We find that most congestion in 2013–2016 is in the relative congestion and could be eliminated by increasing inputs. The use of active packaging has attracted considerable attention over recent years to prevent and decrease the risk of bacterial and viral infection. Thus, this work aims to develop active packaging using a paper coated with green-synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Effects of different silver nitrate (AgNO3) concentrations, viz. 50, 100, 150, and 200 mM (AgNPs-50, AgNPs-100, AgNPs-150, and AgNPs-200, respectively), on green synthesis of AgNPs and coated paper properties were investigated. A bio-reducing agent from mangosteen peel extract (ex-Garcinia mangostana (GM)) and citric acid as a crosslinking agent for a starch/polyvinyl alcohol matrix were also used in the synthetic process. The presence of AgNPs, ex-GM, and citric acid indicated the required synergistic antibacterial activities for gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The paper coated with AgNPs-150 showed complete inactivation of virus within 1 min. Water resistance and tensile strength of paper improved when being coated with AgNPs-150. The tensile strength of the coated paper was found to be in the same range as that of a common packaging paper. Result revealed that the obtained paper coated with AgNPs was proven to be effective in antibacterial and antiviral activities; hence, it could be used as an active packaging material for items that require manual handling by a number of people. A smartphone-assisted, paper-based ratio fluorescence probe is presented for the rapid, low-cost and on-site quantification of total flavonol glycosides in Ginkgo biloba extracts (GBE). The Al3+/Eu-MOF/paper-based probe utilizes lanthanide metal-organic framework (Ln-MOF) nanoparticles immobilized on Whatman filter paper along with Al3+ for detecting flavonols, which are the hydrolyzed products of flavonol glycosides. The color change of the paper-based fluorescence image from red to orange depends on the concentration of the target analyte in the sample solution. The smartphone equipped with a red, green, blue (RGB) color detector measured the fluorescence signal intensity on the paper substrate after adding flavonol. The analytical variables affecting the performance of the probe, including the addition sequence of the aluminum nitrate solution, its concentration, that of the Ln-MOF solution, the drying time of the paper probe, the reaction time and the sensitivity parameters of the mobile phone camera (ISO), were optimized. Under optimal conditions, the Al3+/Eu-MOF/paper-based probe has good linear response in the concentration range 7 ~ 80 µg mL− 1 and a lower detection limit of 2.07 µg mL− 1. The results obtained with the paper-based ratio fluorescence probe and smartphone combination were validated by comparing them with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) measurements. Cellulosic packaging containing an active and sustainable coating can prolong the shelf-life of cherry tomatoes, maintaining the nutritional composition and physical integrity. A new and sustainable active material packaging was developed based on the silver-impregnated-zeolite incorporation into chitosan Kraft paper coating. Zeolite (NaY) was modified by cation exchange with silver ion (NaY-Ag) and incorporated into a chitosan filmogenic matrix, forming an active coating on the Kraft paper surface. The active coating paper formulation was defined using an experimental design 22 + central points with independent variables: chitosan concentration (1–2%, w/w) and NaY-Ag zeolite concentration (0.2–1.2% w/w). The efficiency of the ethylene scavenger active packaging material was evaluated by packing a perishable fruit (cherry tomato) and conditioning it for 30 days at 25 ± 2 °C. The cherry tomatoes conditioned in active coating paper presented a weight loss reduction of 29% and maintenance of the texture associated with the adsorption capacity of ethylene gas. After 30 days of storage, the a* color parameter increased by 39%, compared to fruits packed in uncoated packages, which increased the a* values by 79%, indicating a slower rate of ripening of cherry tomatoes packed in the active silver-impregnated zeolite NaY chitosan coating on Kraft paper material. The active packaging systems developed showed a tendency to reduce the ripening rate of the fruit, controlling the ethylene concentration in the headspace, and also could contribute to minimizing the impact that synthetic polymer coatings have on paper degradation, presenting a sustainable characteristic. To effectively treat the pollutant in sewage, a new-type three-dimensional aerogel based on graphene oxide and waste paper was fabricated via simple mixing and freeze-drying processes. Therein, waste paper was activated in advance, and polyvinyl alcohol served as physical crosslinking agent. The results showed that the obtained aerogel with porous three-dimensional network structure exhibited good thermal stability. When it acted as adsorbent for treating organic dye (methylene blue) and antibiotic (ciprofloxacin), the adsorption process was explored. In single system, the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were used to discuss the detail about the aerogel adsorbing pollutant. Moreover, the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were applied to describe the equilibrium isotherms and calculate the isotherm constants. Thermodynamic results stated that the adsorption of pollutant onto aerogel was feasible and spontaneous. In binary system, the adsorption capacity of methylene blue by aerogel increased, while the adsorption capacity of ciprofloxacin by aerogel declined. The pseudo-second-order kinetics was consistent with the adsorption of pollutant by aerogel in such binary system. The development of fluorometric paper-based analytical devices (fPADs) integrated with smartphone for fluorometric quantification of ethanol in an instrument-free and portable setup is described. The NAD+-dependent alcohol dehydrogenase immobilized within chitosan modified paper substate was utilized as a bio-recognition element and enzymatically generated NADH was used as a fluorescent probe. 3D-printed imaging setup which houses a paper chip holder and UV-light emitting device (LED) was developed for rapid, accurate capture of the fluorescent images. The biocompatible chitosan layer covering the paper provides a feasible environment for enzyme immobilization and enhances the fluorescence signal. The developed fPADs exhibited high sensitivity for ethanol detection and has a linear range for ethanol detection from 17 µM to 8.75 mM (R2 =0.99). Additionally, the fPADs were applied to quantify ethanol in four different wine samples including red, white, rose, and sparkling wines successfully. Moreover, the fPADs produce reproducible signals without loss of enzyme activity for at least 14 days and ~80% activity remained till 28 days. Thus, the proposed approach can provide a facile, affordable, portable, and instrument-free tool for the onsite quantification of ethanol in real samples and is applicable for food quality controls. The global advocacy of resource conservation and waste management emphasizes the significance of sustainable practices, particularly in sectors such as paper manufacturing and recycling. Currently, conventional chemical methods are predominant for paper production, necessitating the use of substantial amount of toxic chemicals. This chemical-intensive approach compromises the recycled fiber quality, generates hazardous effluent causing serious ecological threats which triggers regulatory complexities for the mills. To address these challenges modern research suggests adopting sustainable eco-friendly practices such as employing enzymes. This review aims to explore the applicability of ‘laccase’ enzyme for paper recycling, investigating its properties and contribution to improved recycling practices. By delving into the potential application of laccase integration into the papermaking process, this article sheds light on the limitations inherent in traditional methods surmounted within both research and translational landscapes. A novel electrochemical sensor for paraquat determination was facilely developed using nanocomposites of cellulose incorporated with manganese oxide (MnO2@cellulose) modified screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE). In this study, SPCE was fabricated on a low-cost poster paper, and nanocellulose from sugarcane bagasse was employed to enhance the electrode's surface area and improve the dispersion of MnO2. The MnO2@cellulose modified poster-SPCE exhibited a high electrochemical response toward paraquat. Various influencing factors, including differential pulse voltammetric parameters and accumulation time, were systematically explored. Under the optimal conditions, the cathodic peak current was linearly proportional to paraquat concentration in a range of 2 to 200 µM, featuring a low detection limit of 1 µM. The proposed sensor offers cost-effectiveness and can be readily prepared via a simple procedure. Moreover, this method exhibits excellent reproducibility, high selectivity, and a short analysis time. The portable electrochemical sensor was able to determine paraquat in water samples with acceptable recoveries from 95.45 to 109.20%, indicating that the sensor based on MnO2@cellulose/SPCE is reliable for paraquat quantification. This research article discusses composite panel manufacturers' challenges in finding an optimum pressing time to achieve a trade-off between the panel's performance and the production cost. Real-time cure monitoring techniques, such as dielectric analysis (DEA), have been developed to overcome the limitations of trial-and-error methods, which have been in use for a long time for the same purpose. DEA measures changes in the dielectric properties of the material during the cross-linking reactions in resin and provides necessary information for the cure state of the material. In this study, paper sensors based on interdigitated electrodes were employed to measure the curing behavior of phenol formaldehyde resin-impregnated paper. The paper sensors were found to be better than commercially available sensors in terms of compatibility, thinness, biodegradability, low cost, flexibility, and non-heterogeneity. The study compared the results obtained from DEA with those from differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and found that DEA can be a good candidate for predicting curing behavior. The average enthalpy of the curing measured using DSC for the B-stage resin-impregnated PF resin was 35.28 J g−1. Moreover, it was observed from the rate of cure that at a higher temperature of 180 °C, the reaction follows an autocatalytic kinetic type as the reaction rate passes through a maximum. However, at lower temperatures, the autocatalytic reaction regime seems to be followed by a decelerating type. Apart from protecting the environment from undesired waste impacts, wastewater treatment is a crucial platform for recovery. The exploitation of suitable technology to transform the wastes from pulp and paper industries (PPI) to value-added products is vital from an environmental and socio-economic point of view that will impact everyday life. As the volume and complexity of wastewater increase in a rapidly urbanizing world, the challenge of maintaining efficient wastewater treatment in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly manner must be met. In addition to producing treated water, the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) has a large amount of paper mill sludge (PMS) daily. Sludge management and disposal are significant problems associated with wastewater treatment plants. Applying the biorefinery concept is necessary for PPI from an environmental point of view and because of the piles of valuables contained therein in the form of waste. This will provide a renewable source for producing valuables and bio-energy and aid in making the overall process more economical and environmentally sustainable. Therefore, it is compulsory to continue inquiry on different applications of wastes, with proper justification of the environmental and economic factors. This review discusses current trends and challenges in wastewater management and the bio-valorization of paper mills. Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) is one of the key negative emission technologies (NETs). Large-scale implementation of BECCS has been criticized of the associated increase in land use. The existing large Nordic pulp and paper production units enable BECCS deployment without additional land use, as they currently release large amounts of bio-based carbon dioxide (CO2). The application of BECCS in pulp mills has been found technically feasible in earlier studies. This study explores key factors that affect the propensity to invest in BECCS in different types of existing European pulp and paper mills. The results give fresh understanding on the effects of BECCS on the market price of pulp and paper products and the required level of incentives. Based on statistical data, the marginal carbon dioxide credit (€ per ton CO2) to make BECCS profitable was derived. The results show that the required level of credit greatly depends on the mill type and details and that the feasibility of BECCS does not clearly correlate with the economic performance or the measured efficiency of the mill. The most promising mill type, a market kraft pulp mill, would find BECCS profitable with a credit in the range of 62–70 €/tCO2 and a credit of 80 €/tCO2 would decrease pulp production costs by 15 €/tproduct on average if 50% of CO2 emissions was captured. The EU Emission Trading System (ETS) is the main policy instrument to achieve the climate targets related to fossil energy use, but does not yet contemplate bio-based emissions. This work evaluates the effect of spray-coating papers using cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and nanoclay (NC) on the mechanical and barrier properties for application such as reinforced packaging bags. Sack kraft papers of 60 g m−2 (C60) were coated with combinations of CNFs and CNFs + NC, varying the number of layers on the internal face (IF) and external face (EF) of the paper. Their properties were compared to uncoated sack kraft papers with basis weight of 60 g m−2 (C60), 80 g m−2 (C80) and 120 g m−2 (C120). The amount of CNF/NC deposited was ~ 20 g m−2 while the CNF layer deposited was ~ 10 g m−2 on the sack papers. Increase in the number of layers deposited decreased the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) compared to C60. CNF layer had lower contact angles on the coated papers than CNF/NC layer. The coated papers also showed a 44–66% increase in tensile index when compared to C120. Papers coated with 2 layers of CNFs and 1 layer of CNFs /NC achieved the same tensile index as C120 and the layers also resulted in higher values of Young's modulus (38–56%) when compared to C60. Spray-coating, with the appropriate layers, improved the mechanical and barrier properties of the coated papers, and is a possible alternative to producing papers with lower basis weight and using renewable raw materials. We combine biodegradable plastic (polyvinyl alcohol/glycerol polymer), and cellulose-based tissue paper in a very short time (5 s) by a facile way to form a new matrix, named plastic-paper, which has high optical transmittance (~ 89%) and high optical haze (~ 90%) in broadband. Results showed that the plastic-paper is durable in different solvents, with high folding strength (over 3500 folding times) and good mechanical strength (> 30 MPa tensile strength). Interestingly, the plastic-paper presents a two-sidedness of surface morphology. The smooth side shows high light transmittance and the rough side presents high optical haze. The smooth side of the plastic-paper is successfully applied to Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED). When the rough surface of plastic-paper is used in solar cells, the maximum output power increases by 2.6% compared with bare solar cells. Cheap, rapid, simple and equipment-free nucleic acid extraction (NAE) is highly preferred for implementing nucleic acid detection at point-of-care (POC). Paper-based NAE materials have been extensively utilized due to their low cost, abundance, portability, biocompatibility and ease of chemical modification. However, it is challenging for users to choose the proper one from existing paper-based NAE materials for specific POC applications, which is determined by their physical and chemical properties. Additionally, building the relationship between the physical and chemical properties and the NAE efficiency of paper-based materials is instructive for development of new paper-based NAE materials. In this study, we first systematically compared the physical and chemical properties of six widely used paper-based NAE materials (namely Whatman filter paper #1, FTA card, FTA elute card, Fusion 5, silica membrane and polyethersulfone (PES) membrane), and then evaluated their NAE efficiency. The obtained results indicated that pore uniformity, wet strength, porosity and functional groups are key parameters to affect the efficiency of NAE. The NAE performance of FTA card is the best with high concentration and purity. Measuring the novelty of scientific papers is an important research topic. If most subsequent researches of a focal paper only cite itself instead of citing its references as well, this paper could be highly disruptive as it may start a new stream of research. However, due to preferential attachment, even if a focal paper is very disruptive, the subsequent works may still cite both the focal paper and some of its highly cited references. To eliminate the noise caused by these highly cited references, we modify the disruption metric and analyze its performance and robustness. The results show that the improved method could better distinguish Nobel prize winning papers from the others. Dementia Day Care Centres (DDCCs) are defined as services providing care and rehabilitation to people with dementia associated with behavioural and psychological symptoms (BPSD) in a semi-residential setting. According to available evidence, DDCCs may decrease BPSD, depressive symptoms and caregiver burden. The present position paper reports a consensus of Italian experts of different disciplines regarding DDCCs and includes recommendations about architectural features, requirements of personnel, psychosocial interventions, management of psychoactive drug treatment, prevention and care of geriatric syndromes, and support to family caregivers. DDCCs architectural features should follow specific criteria and address specific needs of people with dementia, supporting independence, safety, and comfort. Staffing should be adequate in size and competence and should be able to implement psychosocial interventions, especially focused on BPSD. Individualized care plan should include prevention and treatment of geriatric syndromes, a targeted vaccination plan for infectious diseases including COVID-19, and adjustment of psychotropic drug treatment, all in cooperation with the general practitioner. Informal caregivers should be involved in the focus of intervention, with the aim of reducing assistance burden and promoting the adaptation to the ever-changing relationship with the patient. Developing fluorescent paper-based materials with recyclable, environmental friendly, excellent stable and uniform performances are still an urgent challenge at present. Herein, a simple, green, and high-efficiency method for the fabrication of high stability and recyclable cellulose-based fluorescent paper from waste bagasse via Hantzsch reaction is proposed. Compared to the pristine paper, the surface modification showed little effect on the morphology, mechanical properties, thermal performance and appearance. Meanwhile, the good writing and printing ability of the paper still remained. The prepared paper showed excellent fluorescence performance, which is very stable even treated with acidic, alkaline, and different solvents for 24 h. It can be processed into different security patterns. What's more, this strategy could be extended by using other compositions with aldehyde groups. Considering their functional and recyclable features, as well as the convenient and efficient fabrication process, our fluorescent papers hold great potential to be applied in many fields such as anti-counterfeiting. Despite progress in the prevention and diagnosis of cancer, current technologies for tumor detection present several limitations including invasiveness, toxicity, inaccuracy, lengthy testing duration and high cost. Therefore, innovative diagnostic techniques that integrate knowledge from biology, oncology, medicinal and analytical chemistry are now quickly emerging in the attempt to address these issues. Following this approach, here we developed a paper-based electrochemical device for detecting cancer-derived Small Extracellular Vesicles (S-EVs) in fluids. S-EVs were obtained from cancer cell lines known to express, at a different level, the αvβ6 integrin receptor, a well-established hallmark of numerous epithelial cancer types. The resulting biosensor turned out to recognize αvβ6-containing S-EVs down to a limit of 0.7*10 3 S-EVs/mL with a linear range up to 10 5 S-EVs /mL, and a relative standard deviation of 11%, thus it may represent a novel opportunity for αvβ6 expressing cancers detection., (© 2024. A high-barrier, strong, and antibacterial paper was fabricated by coating the acetylated cellulose solution with different contents of cinnamaldehyde (CIN) on Kraft paper. The antibacterial, antioxidant, mechanical, and barrier properties of coated paper were investigated. When the amount of CIN added in coating reached 6% v/v, the coated paper exhibited excellent antioxidant activity and antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Notably, the dry and wet tensile strength of paper after coating was increased by 26.4 and 10.6 MPa, respectively. Furthermore, the coated papers' barrier properties against oil, water, water vapor, and oxygen were dramatically improved, especially for the water barrier rate up to 96.4%. Our coated papers with over 6% v/v CIN could extend beef's shelf-life for at least 4 days, which exhibited a promising prospect in eco-friendly antibacterial packaging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A wide range of applications are possible with paper-based analytical devices, which are low priced, easy to fabricate and operate, and require no specialized equipment. Paper-based microfluidics offers the design of miniaturized POC devices to be applied in the health, environment, food, and energy sector employing the ASSURED (Affordable, Sensitive, Specific, User-friendly, Rapid and Robust, Equipment free and Deliverable to end users) principle of WHO. Therefore, this field is growing very rapidly and ample research is being done. This review focuses on fabrication and detection techniques reported to date. Additionally, this review emphasises on the application of this technology in the area of medical diagnosis, energy generation, environmental monitoring, and food quality control. This review also presents the theoretical analysis of fluid flow in porous media for the efficient handling and control of fluids. Sunitinib malate (SM) is a chemical compound belonging to the class of kinase inhibitors and is mainly used in cancer treatment. However, despite its effectiveness, SM can cause multiple side effects, including fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, which can affect the patient's quality of life. Therefore, rapid and accurate diagnosis of SM is very important in many fields, especially for human health. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), an improved method for identifying biological and chemical substances with very low concentrations, is fast, reliable, and accurate. In order to identify the SM drug, filter paper substrates covered with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were used as SERS biosensors. First, AgNPs were prepared using a chemical reduction method. Then, the characteristics of the produced AgNPs were examined using FE-SEM, TEM, XRD, AFM, and UV–Vis analyses. The AgNPs were then coated on the substrates to create plasmonic active sites for identifying molecular vibrations of the SM drug. By coating the SM drug onto these substrates, the AgNPs reacted with the SM drug, successfully identifying trace amounts of the drug. The detection limit of the SERS plasmonic substrates for identifying the SM drug was 10−10 M. The average RSD for six repeated measurements was calculated at 5.39%. The enhancement factor for identifying molecular vibrations of the SM drug was experimentally calculated at 2.741 × 105 and numerically as 2.504 × 105. Therefore, the results indicate that these substrates are suitable for identifying low concentrations of this drug and can be used for drug monitoring purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pulp and paper industry is an important contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions1,2. Country-specific strategies are essential for the industry to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, given its vast heterogeneities across countries3,4. Here we develop a comprehensive bottom-up assessment of net greenhouse gas emissions of the domestic paper-related sectors for 30 major countries from 1961 to 2019—about 3.2% of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions from the same period5—and explore mitigation strategies through 2,160 scenarios covering key factors. Our results show substantial differences across countries in terms of historical emissions evolution trends and structure. All countries can achieve net-zero emissions for their pulp and paper industry by 2050, with a single measure for most developed countries and several measures for most developing countries. Except for energy-efficiency improvement and energy-system decarbonization, tropical developing countries with abundant forest resources should give priority to sustainable forest management, whereas other developing countries should pay more attention to enhancing methane capture rate and reducing recycling. The effective utilization for recycled carbon fibers (rCFs) is significant for less pollution, low energy consumption and resource conservation. This paper proposed a path for reprocessing the recycled carbon fibers into CF/PA6 fiber papers using flexible papermaking technology. Then, the CF/PA6 fiber paper could be used as an interlayer component to continuous CF woven/epoxy resin composites to form hybrid composites. The configurations of hybrid composites and directions of papers effects on notched impact resistance and flexural performance were systematically discussed. The micro energy absorption mechanism was revealed based on real-time crack tracking. The results indicate that cracks migration between woven and paper contributes to impact and flexural energy absorption, most improving 22.64% and 40.85% respectively in one-layer paper with longitudinal direction in the middle location (L1). Whereas, there is a negative effect of hybrid composites on flexural strength and modulus compared with pure CF woven composites. The behaviors of hybrid composites with longitudinal direction of paper are greater than that with transverse direction on stress, modulus, and the absorbed energy in the same configurations. Furthermore, spatial flexural morphologies are also affected by damage path. The final failure modes integrate the continuous woven fabric composite and discontinuous CF/PA6 fiber paper composite, mainly including fiber and matrix fracture, fiber pull-out and delamination.
