Alcohol consumption and sleep disorders are both prevalent and relevant problems among college students, but the relationship between these conditions is unclear. This study aimed to analyze the association between alcohol-related problems and sleep in first-year college students from Brazil, Chile, and Spain. Cross-sectional analyses were performed with data from three independent studies with first-year college students from each country. The risk of alcohol-related problems (RARP) and sleep quality and duration were self-reported using mixed methods. Pooled odds ratios (p-OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) of suboptimal sleep quality and of short (< 7 h) and long (> 8 h) sleep duration were estimated according to RARP adjusting for the main confounders. Of the 1830 students included (31.2% Brazilian, 42.2% Chilean, and 26.6% Spanish), 61.6% were female, and the mean age was 20.0 ± 3.6 years. Overall, 25.0% and 9.9% of the students were classified as intermediate and high RARP, respectively. In the combined results for the three countries, intermediate-to-high RARP was associated with a higher likelihood of suboptimal sleep quality (p-OR: 1.24; 95% CI: 1.00 to 1.52; I2 heterogeneity statistics: 43.0%), regardless of sociodemographic and lifestyle covariates and of self-rated health. The frequency of alcohol consumption was not associated with sleep quality or sleep duration. In this multicountry pooled analysis, first-year college students at risk of alcohol-related problems were more likely to report worse sleep quality. The coexistence of alcohol-related problems and sleep disorders could potentiate its adverse health effects among these young adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Teachers are exposed to inherent psychosocial risks in the workplace such as chronic stress, psychological distress, exhaustion, and burnout syndrome. To compare the values in psychosocial variables based on compliance with the recommendations for physical activity by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the type of physical activity performed. Methods: The study had a non-experimental and comparative design, with measurements in a single group. The sample was composed of 415 physical education teachers from Spain, with an age range of 21–53 years (28.78 ± 6.15) and a heterogeneous distribution of gender (69.4% male; 30.6% women). The Perceived Stress Scale, the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale, and an Ad-Hoc questionnaire were used to record the sociodemographic aspects and physical-sports practice. Results: Most of the teachers complied with the recommendations for physical activity practice (n = 335; 80.7%). Physical activity was associated with lower signs of burnout and a greater ability to overcome. Although, teachers who did not comply with WHO recommendations, showed greater stress and emotional exhaustion. In conclusion, enough practice of physical activity based on WHO was shown as a preventive factor of stress and signs of burnout. Conclusions: The findings suggest that perform physical activity based on the WHO recommendations helps for work stress prevention and burnout syndrome in teachers, as well as to overcome work adversities. Aging of the population emphasizes the need for research on aging-related problems, among which frailty is a key element because of its clinical as well as social implications. After a review of empirical research of frailty in old adults, the objective of this research is fourfold: (1) assess the adequacy of a comprehensive index of frailty; (2) test for the effects of different socioeconomic and anthropometric variables of an index of frailty; (3) study the effect of frailty on quality of life and general health; and (4) prove grounds for potential gender differences in all these concepts surrounding frailty as well as in frailty itself. This study relies on data from the SHARE project at wave 6, with a total of 4498 Spain-dwelling people aged 60 or older (M = 73.56, SD = 8.89), of which 46.1% were male and 53.9% were female. Statistical analyses included Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Full Structural Equation Models with multi-group comparison based upon gender. Results provide evidence of adequacy for this measure of frailty. Evidence shows how different variables have an impact on frailty, which further affects quality of life and health. Finally, gender differences are studied and discussed with previous literature. We conclude that results are consistent with previous literature on frailty in old people. The subjective well-being (SWB) of children in out-of-home care is crucial to assess their potential quality of life today and in the future. This study aims at comparing SWB of children in residential care and in foster families in two European territories or jurisdictions: Portugal and Catalonia (Spain). This study used a sample of 551 children, aged between 11 and 15, being 39 in foster care and 145 in residential care in Portugal, and 41 and 326 respectively in Catalonia. SWB was measured with the Personal Well-being Index-School Children (PWI-SC9) and other variables were evaluated, such as happiness with the placement, relationship with carers, satisfaction with school, and perceptions about themselves and their lives. Results indicate that children in residential care have a lower SWB, as well as lower scores in most of the other variables, compared to children in the foster care groups in the two territories. These results should challenge public policymaking for children to change from an attitude dominantly favourable to institutionalisation to a more successful approach based on family foster care. This can provide the opportunity for children in out-of-home care to grow up with higher SWB and, probably, a better life trajectory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A combination of dredging data, hydrographic surveys and numerical modelling has been used to assess morphological change and sediment transport in the Douro River estuary. The system is dominated by sand- and gravel-sized sediments and confined by resistant rock types. The evolution of the bed in the last 20 years has been strongly influenced by the opening of a navigation channel. According to the data available to date, the average maintenance dredging volume has been of the order of 0.4 × 106 m3 year−1. Comparisons of hydrographic surveys reveal a rate of volume loss of the same magnitude. Apparently, maintenance dredging mainly involves local material, transported into the channel from shallower areas of the estuary. The results of numerical modelling indicate that the sediment transport capacity due to tidal currents is very limited. River flood events increase the transport capacity by several orders of magnitude, thus playing a critical role in sediment redistribution and supply to the coast. The average sediment transport capacity is estimated to be of the order of 0.1 × 106 m3 year−1 in most of the estuary and 0.5 × 106 m3 year−1 at the inlet, with a large uncertainty. It is concluded that, if morphological stability is set as an environmental objective, the dredged material should not be removed from the system but rather be used to nourish the estuarine beaches and the barrier spit. Water samples from different origins (rain, surface and drinking) collected in Portugal during the years 2006 to 2017 were analyzed for the tritium (3H) activity contents using isotopic enrichment followed by liquid scintillation counting. Regarding rainwater, the results show no significant correlation between the normalized 3H and the precipitation amount and no variations among the annual seasons. The higher 3H values observed for Tejo River indicate the influence of the Almaraz NPP located in Spain. The 3H activity levels in drinking water were one to two orders of magnitude lower than the European parametric value (100 Bq L−1). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
