The aim of this meta-analysis was to examine the effectiveness of sex education programs for people with intellectual disabilities, exploring the effects of possible moderating variables. 31 independent studies were identified, from 8 research reports published between 1988 and 2017. The results revealed mean effect sizes in favor of the experimental group, being of large magnitude for the components inappropriate behaviors (d = − 1.26) and Decision making (d = − 1.03), and of moderate magnitude for the global effect (d = − .64). The analyses revealed that single-sex groups, publications between 2000 and 2009 and a high degree of training and experience to deliver the programs were moderating variables that had a great effect on the effectiveness of the programs for the global effect component. Similar results were obtained for the decision making dimension while no significant moderating variables were found for the inappropriate behaviors dimension. Understanding how effective sex educational programs work is essential to this social group. Practical implications are discussed from the results obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The figure of the sexual assistant is increasingly demanded as a right in the disabilities field. This figure requires debate, adaptation to the characteristics of countries and cultures, as well as to the characteristics of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This study presents the work carried out with representatives of Spanish organizations of people with intellectual disabilities to develop a proposal for the figure of support staff for sexual behavior. Together with a rights perspective, this proposal is aligned with the Supports paradigm to better meet the health and behavior needs of users. The figure is framed within the auto-erotic and therapeutic model of sexual assistance. This figure excludes characteristics of the erotic model that involves interaction or sexual exchange between the sexual assistant and the individual with a disability. Several advantages and disadvantages need to be carefully considered before implementing this support in a delivery service model. Introduction: The lockdown due to COVID-19 affected the sexual health of the people with intellectual disabilities by differentially modifying the frequency and characteristics of people's sexual activity depending on whether or not they lived with a partner during this period. The aim of this study was to analyze the extent to which the sexual behavior of people with intellectual disabilities (with and without a partner) was affected during the lockdown. Methods: The sample consisted of 73 people with intellectual disabilities between 21 and 63 years old (M = 39.63; SD = 10.11). The variables analyzed were the physical, social, and technological environment during the lockdown, sexual appetite, sexual behavior, online sexual activity, and sexual abuse. The data were collected between the months of May and June of 2020. Results: The lockdown increased the sexual appetite of a third of the sample (38%), especially the youngest participants. Sexual activity focused on autoeroticism and online behavior, particularly sending nude images of oneself (88%) and viewing pornography (83.6%). Rates of sexual abuse during this period were relatively high (6.8%). Conclusions: The sexual activity of people with ID was important during the lockdown, and they had to adapt to the circumstances of isolation in a similar way to the general population. Technological improvements in terms of devices and connection quality at home allowed their sexual behavior to be reoriented, opening the door to new risks for the sexual health of people with ID. The high prevalence of people with Intellectual Disability (ID) fosters the recognition of their health, work, and social needs. However, few studies have focused on the assessment of their affective and sexual needs (a basic personal need and universal right). Even though the current literature suggests changes in social attitudes toward this population, it is unclear whether these changes have actually occurred and their impact on the development of healthy and non-stigmatized sexuality. This question is particularly relevant due to the lack of a sound measure to assess this shift in the social consideration of the sexuality of people with ID. Thus, this preliminary study focuses on the design and validation of a reliable measure to assess attitudes toward the sexuality of people with Intellectual Disability. This study comprises 1103 participants (43.3% men; 56.7% women) between 20 and 92 years old, classified into three groups: parents or relatives of people with ID, professionals working with ID individuals, and the general population. Results from Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) yielded three factors explaining 49.19% of the scale variance: Normalizing Attitudes (NOR-A), Negative Attitudes (NEG-A), and Paternalistic Attitudes (PAT-A). This three-factor structure was subsequently confirmed through Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Regarding internal consistency, Cronbach's alpha values ranged between 0.66 and 0.86. In conclusion, this research demonstrates that the ASEXID is useful and reliable for the assessment of relatives', professionals', and societal attitudes toward the sexuality of people with ID, contributing to the assessment of a potential paradigm shift in attitudes toward the affective sexual education of people with this condition. The primary objective of this study was to identify the profiles of families of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) without intellectual disability (ID) based on several risk indicators: sociodemographic and emotional indicators, parental stress, confidant social support, and coping strategies. A second aim was to determine the differences in communicative skills between children of family subtypes empirically established according to the aforementioned risk factors. Participants were 52 Spanish mothers and their children with ASD. Through cluster analysis, three subtypes of families were identified, classifying them as "high risk, moderate risk, and little risk". The "little risk" profile showed significantly less stress and greater use of coping strategies and confidant social support. Video-based interventions (i.e., video prompting and video modeling) have been acknowledged as efficient evidence-based practices to teach social or living skills to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). However, this strategy has been used less to teach these students’ academic skills, such as literacy skills, and this teaching has typically been directed at young students. Given that, the aim of this study was to teach secondary school students with IDD to find a word in the dictionary by using an intervention package which included video prompting and video modeling strategies. Also, it explores social validity on the implementation of the video-based intervention through a brief questionnaire answered in interview format. A multiple probe across participants design was used to assess the effectiveness of the intervention in three students. Also, practitioners emphasized the usefulness of these strategies when teaching academic skills. The results suggest that participants successfully learned how to use the dictionary to search for an unknown word, although for one of the participants the last step was not reached. The article discusses a study that aimed to identify and describe the characteristics of human figure drawing (HFD) in adults with intellectual disabilities (ID), evaluate developmental items in HFD before and after a series of 26 sessions of DMT intervention in adults with ID and evaluate developmental items in the HFD before and after 1 session with dance/movement therapy (DMT) in adults. It suggests that a DMT program may be used as a tool to increase knowledge of the body in adults with ID.

The article presents a study conducted on the adaptation of Kansas Inventory of Parental Perceptions (KIPP) by the Spanish population. Topics discussed include perception of parents about a family member with intellectual disability, factor analysis on the four scales of KIPP, and correlations with Family Quality of Life.

Children and adolescents in residential care often present with emotional and/or behavioral problems associated to previous adverse experiences such as abuse and neglect. Consequently, child welfare systems have developed therapeutic residential care (TRC) programs to address the most complex needs of this population. The aim of this study is to explore the characteristics of youths in TRC comparing them with those of youth in general residential care (GRC), and to detect the factors predicting referral to TRC programs. The sample consisted of 900 adolescents aged 12–17 years old (M = 15.57; SD = 1.33; 66.2% boys), from General Residential Care (n = 554) and Therapeutic Residential Care (n = 346). Profile information was collected through official files and an ad hoc questionnaire. Mental health problems were evaluated using the youth self-report (YSR). Significant sociodemographic differences were found between groups. Also, a higher frequency of emotional abuse and neglect, worse mental health, more breakdowns in child welfare measures and risk behaviors were found among adolescents in TRC. Sociodemographic and familial characteristics, features of the protective process and risk behaviors were associated to referral to TRC programs. Youths in GRC and TRC present with mental and behavioral problems that make it necessary to implement prevention programs and early detection procedures. Screening and evaluation of youth's mental health and establishment of concrete criteria are suggested to ensure appropriate referral to the most suitable resource according to the individual needs of adolescents. The article reports on topics which were discussed at the 40th European Symposium on Clinical Pharmacy, which was held on October 18-21, 2011 in Dublin, Ireland. Topics included pharmacogenetics, tailored treatments and the challenges of providing medical care to people with intellectual disabilities. The event was attended by pharmacy and pharmaceutical professionals from across the globe.

Objectives: The family of the students with Down syndrome, just as in the case of any other child, is the main party responsible for their education, and the main socializing agent, as the family is in permanent contact with the student and knows about the characteristics of the child more than anyone. The aim of this study is to provide information on the educational response that regular Spanish schools offer to the students with Down Syndrome through the parent's and the teacher's perceptions. Methods: Therefore, 218 questionnaires were provided to parents of children with Down syndrome, and 22 in-depth interviews to education professionals (regular teachers of students with Down syndrome). Results: The results indicated that the parents positively perceived the educational response offered by the schools to their children, however, although the schools shared the principles of inclusion, they differed on the manner that it was implemented, pointing to the lack of material and human resources. They also considered that the teacher's training was appropriate. Conclusions: In conclusion, that the families of students with Down syndrome had positive perceptions towards inclusive education of their children. Restricted and repetitive behavior (RRB) is one of the two key diagnostic features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). DSM-5 highlights the importance of severity-based diagnostic modifiers assigned on the basis of intensity of needed supports. Therefore, there is a need for available measures that assess the severity of RRB. The repetitive behavior scale-revised (RBS-R) is probably the most used informant-based rating scale for the assessment of RRB and interests observed in ASD. The present study examined the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the RBS-R in a sample of 233 participants with ASD, aged 3 to 63 years. Results revealed a six-factor model, good internal consistency, and concurrent-divergent validity. These findings suggest the utility of the Spanish version of RBS-R. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: We aimed to describe the structure and strength of the tibia and radius of adolescents with Down syndrome. We observed that despite higher levels of volumetric bone mineral density in determined skeletal sites, they are at higher risk of developing osteoporotic fractures in the future due to their lower bone strength indexes. Introduction: The aims of the study were to describe the cortical and trabecular volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD), bone mineral content (BMC), area, and bone strength in adolescents with Down syndrome (DS) and to compare them with adolescents without disabilities. Methods: Thirty adolescents (11 girls) with DS and 28 without disabilities (10 girls) participated in the study. Peripheral quantitative computed tomography measurements were taken at proximal and distal sites of the tibia and radius. Values of total, trabecular, and cortical BMC; vBMD; and area were obtained of each scan. Cortical thickness and endosteal and periosteal circumferences were also measured, and different bone strength indexes were calculated. Student's t tests were applied between groups. Results: The DS group showed greater vBMD at distal radius, BMC at proximal radius, and total and cortical vBMD at proximal tibia. The non-DS group showed higher total and trabecular area at the distal radius and total, cortical, and trabecular BMC and area at distal tibia. Higher values of periosteal and endosteal circumference and bone strength were also found in non-DS group. Conclusions: From these results, it can be believed that even with higher vBMD in determined skeletal sites, adolescents with DS are at higher risk of suffering bone fractures due to an increased fragility by lower resistance to load bending or torsion. The goal of this article consists of describing the calibration of an instrument to assess quality of life-related personal outcomes using Rasch analysis. The sample was composed of 3.029 recipients of social services from Catalonia (Spain) and was selected using a probabilistic polietapic sample design. Results related to unidimensionality, item and person separation reliability, calibration, items' level of difficulty, response categories and differential item functioning by gender and type of collective are provided and point out the general fit of the data to the model. There is considerable debate in the area of individual quality of life research regarding the factor structure of the QOL construct that is focused on the number and composition of QOL factors and domains, and its hierarchical nature. The main goal of this study involve testing by means of confirmatory factor analyses five models that have been pointed out by recent scientific literature: firstly, an unidimensional model; secondly, a QOL model that consisted of eight inter-correlated domains proposed by Schalock and Verdugo (); thirdly, a model composed of these eight 1st-order factors and one 2nd- order factor; the forth and five are model with the eight 1st-order factors and three 2nd-order factor that has been denominated in other studies 'Salamanca model' and 'Schalock model'. Data were collected from 3.029 social service recipients from Catalonia (Spain) who completed the GENCAT Scale, an objective QOL questionnaire.
