Nucleic acids are prominent biomarkers for diagnosing infectious pathogens using nucleic acid amplification techniques (NAATs). PCR, a gold standard technique for amplifying nucleic acids, is widely used in scientific research and diagnosis. Efficient pathogen detection is a key to adequate food safety and hygiene. However, using bulky thermal cyclers and costly laboratory setup limits its uses in developing countries, including India. The isothermal amplification methods are exploited to develop miniaturized sensors against viruses, bacteria, fungi and other pathogenic organisms and have been applied for in situ diagnosis. Isothermal amplification techniques have been found suitable for POC techniques and follow WHO's ASSURED criteria. LAMP, NASBA, SDA, RCA and RPA are some of the isothermal amplification techniques which are preferable for POC diagnostics. Furthermore, methods such as WGA, CPA, HDA, EXPAR, SMART, SPIA and DAMP were introduced for even more accuracy and robustness. Using recombinant polymerases and other nucleic acid-modifying enzymes has dramatically broadened the detection range of target pathogens under the scanner. The coupling of isothermal amplification methods with advanced technologies such as CRISPR/Cas systems, fluorescence-based chemistries, microfluidics and paper-based sensors has significantly influenced the biosensing and diagnosis field. Floods are one of the most disastrous and dangerous catastrophes faced by humanity for ages. Though mostly deemed a natural phenomenon, floods can be anthropogenic and can be equally devastating in modern times. Remote sensing with its non-evasive data availability and high temporal resolution stands unparalleled for flood mapping and modelling. Since floods in India occur mainly in monsoon months, optical remote sensing has limited applications in proper flood mapping owing to lesser number of cloud-free days. Remotely sensed microwave/synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data has penetration ability and has high temporal data availability, making it both weather independent and highly versatile for the study of floods. This study uses space-borne SAR data in C-band with VV (vertically emitted and vertically received) and VH (vertically emitted and horizontally received) polarization channels from Sentinel-1A satellite for SAR interferometry-based flood mapping and runoff modeling for Rupnagar (Punjab) floods of 2019. The flood maps were prepared using coherence-based thresholding, and digital elevation map (DEM) was prepared by correlating the unwrapped phase to elevation. The DEM was further used for Soil Conservation Service-curve number (SCS-CN)-based runoff modelling. The maximum runoff on 18 August 2019 was 350 mm while the average daily rainfall was 120 mm. The estimated runoff significantly correlated with the rainfall with an R2 statistics value of 0.93 for 18 August 2019. On 18 August 2019, Rupnagar saw the most devastating floods and waterlogging that submerged acres of land and displaced thousands of people. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: This article aimed to study the burden, impact and coping mechanisms associated with out-of-pocket (OOP) health expenditure in rural and urban areas in India.Methods: National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) data on ‘Health and Morbidity’ gathered in 2004 and 2014 were employed to measure the catastrophic burden, impoverishment impact and various coping strategies associated with out-of-pocket health in India.Results: Results revealed that over the study period, considerable rural-urban differentials existed in the economic burden and impact of out-of-pocket health expenditure. As a coping strategy, borrowing and other distress sources were used in higher proportions by the rural population than their urban counterparts. Overall, our results demonstrated an alarming situation regarding health care financing in India.Conclusion: Substantial investment in public health is needed, especially in rural areas as it is here that people are facing the real brunt of catastrophic OOP health expenditures in the form of impoverishment with more dependence on distress sources including borrowing and sale of assets as coping mechanisms. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) refers to therapies that aim to eliminate a patient's hematopoietic and immune system and replace it with his own (autologous) or someone else's (allogenic) system. The applications of this therapy are vast and growing, and include several malignant and benign diseases incurable by any other existing modalities. Pediatric patients constitute a minority of HSCT recipients with unique concerns. Despite substantial progress in the last two decades, limitations due to financial, infrastructural, manpower and research constraints act as barriers to fulfilling the large need for pediatric HSCT services in our country. Limited availability of unrelated donors and cord blood units is another constraint. Here in this oration, we discuss the current issues pertaining to pediatric HSCT in India and describe our experience with the same. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dimensions of women's autonomy and their relationship to maternal health care utilization were investigated in a probability sample of 300 women in Varanasi, India. We examined the determinants of women's autonomy in three areas: control over finances, decision-making power, and freedom of movement. After we control for age, education, household structure, and other factors, women with closer ties to natal kin were more likely to have greater autonomy in each of these three areas. Further analyses demonstrated that women with greater freedom of movement obtained higher levels of antenatal care and were more likely to use safe delivery care. The influence of women's autonomy on the use of health care appears to be as important as other known determinants such as education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
