Agroforestry can address multiple environmental challenges across the agricultural sector, for example biodiversity loss and soil degradation. However, agroforestry uptake remains low in Germany. Since economic considerations are important for farmer uptake, this paper compares the economic performance of conventional arable farming with silvoarable alley cropping in Brandenburg. Using a modelling approach, the net present value (NPV) is calculated to assess the competitiveness of alley cropping with poplar compared to arable farming under different scenarios. These scenarios cover a range of crops, rotation schedules, alley widths, woodchip prices, and yield levels. Additionally, policy measures that can compensate for potential economic losses associated with transitioning to agroforestry are considered. Results show that short rotation alley cropping had higher NPVs than medium rotation alley cropping, mainly due to cash-flow characteristics. Short rotation alley cropping can be competitive at high woodchip prices without policy support, while at low or average prices alley cropping needs subsidies to be competitive. Medium rotation systems at all price levels were not competitive unless policy support was provided. Current policy payments were unable to make silvoarable alley cropping competitive except at high woodchip prices. When subsidies increase, alley cropping can be competitive even at low or average woodchip prices and over a range of site conditions. Aim: Balanced crop nutrition is key to improve nutrient use efficiency and reduce environmental impact of farming systems. We developed and tested a dynamic model to predict the uptake of P and K in long-term experiments to better understand how changes in soil nutrient pools affect nutrient availability in crop rotations. Methods: Our RC-KP model includes labile and stable pools for P and K, with separate labile pools for placed P and organic fertilizers including farm yard manure (FYM). Pool sizes and crop-specific relative uptake rates determined potential uptake. Actual crop uptake from labile pools was based on concepts developed by Janssen et al. (Geoderma 46:299-318, 1990). The model was calibrated on three long-term experiments from Kenia (Siaya), Germany (Hanninghof) and the United Kingdom (Broadbalk) to estimate parameter values for crop-specific relative uptake rates and site-specific relative transfer rates. Results: The model described N, P and K uptake accurately with a Nash-Sutcliff modelling efficiency of 0.6–0.9 and root mean squared errors of 2.6–3.4 kg P ha−1 and 14–20 kg K ha−1. Excluding organic labile pools did not affect model accuracy in Broadbalk in contrast to Hanninghof where Mg deficiencies affected crop uptakes in treatments without Mg or FYM. Conclusions: This relatively simple model provides a novel approach to accurately estimate N, P and K uptake and explore short- and long-term effects of fertilizers in crop rotations. The frequency of extreme weather events has increased in the latest years in Europe. The recent consecutive droughts caused severe damage in many sectors and underlined the demand for adaptation. There is a need for a better understanding of the response of ecosystems to climate change and the consequences for key ecosystem services, such as water supply and carbon sequestration, at a local and regional scale. This paper aims to support decision-making for climate adaptation in a low-mountainous region of central Germany. We analysed the temperature and precipitation trends and drought conditions. The response of two key services (surface water provision and carbon sequestration) to droughts is estimated using an ecosystem service model. The spatially averaged water yield, net ecosystem productivity (NEP), and soil moisture are assessed and compared for the five worst droughts with long-term averages to identify the vulnerable areas and ecosystems. The temperature increased on seasonal and annual scales, while precipitation decreased in some areas in summer and increased in winter and annually. The standardised precipitation-evapotranspiration index (SPEI) showed worsening drought conditions, especially after the late 1980s. Droughts caused a reduction of water yield by 54%, NEP by 18%, and upper zone soil moisture by 13%. The impacts varied spatially, with the central region being worst affected, while the southern part was relatively more resilient. Adaptation is urgently needed to reduce drought risks and enhance climate resilience. Adaptive measures can include amending crop rotations, introducing more drought-tolerant varieties, upgrading agriculture and food industry technology, increasing mixed forests, and reducing non-native tree species. The purpose of the StaPlaRes project was to evaluate two innovative techniques of urea fertiliser application and to quantify greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. All GHG emissions, as well as other gaseous emissions, agronomic and environmental variables were collected for three years (2016/2017–2018/2019) at three experimental field sites in Germany. All management activities were consistently documented. Multi-variable data sets of gas fluxes (N2O and NH3), crop parameters (grain and straw yield, N content, etc.), soil characteristics (NH4-N, NO3-N, etc.), continuously recorded meteorological variables (air and soil temperatures, radiation, precipitation, etc.), management activities (sowing, harvest, soil tillage, fertilization, etc.), were documented and metadata (methods, further information about variables, etc.) described. Additionally, process-related tests were carried out using lab (N2 emissions), pot and lysimeter experiments (nitrate leaching). In total, 2.5 million records have been stored in a Microsoft Access database (StaPlaRes-DB-Thuenen). The database is freely available for (re)use by others (scientists, stakeholders, etc.) on the publication server and data repository OpenAgrar for meta-analyses, process modelling and other environmental studies. Agrivoltaic (AV) systems integrate the production of agricultural crops and electric power on the same land area through the installation of solar panels several meters above the soil surface. It has been demonstrated that AV can increase land productivity and contribute to the expansion of renewable energy production. Its utilization is expected to affect crop production by altering microclimatic conditions but has so far hardly been investigated. The present study aimed to determine for the first time how changes in microclimatic conditions through AV affect selected agricultural crops within an organic crop rotation. For this purpose, an AV research plant was installed near Lake Constance in south-west Germany in 2016. A field experiment was established with four crops (celeriac, winter wheat, potato and grass-clover) cultivated both underneath the AV system and on an adjacent reference site without solar panels. Microclimatic parameters, crop development and harvestable yields were monitored in 2017 and 2018. Overall, an alteration in microclimatic conditions and crop production under AV was confirmed. Photosynthetic active radiation was on average reduced by about 30% under AV. During summertime, soil temperature was decreased under AV in both years. Furthermore, reduced soil moisture and air temperatures as well as an altered rain distribution have been found under AV. In both years, plant height of all crops was increased under AV. In 2017 and 2018, yield ranges of the crops cultivated under AV compared to the reference site were −19 to +3% for winter wheat, −20 to +11% for potato and −8 to −5% for grass-clover. In the hot, dry summer 2018, crop yields of winter wheat and potato were increased by AV by 2.7% and 11%, respectively. These findings show that yield reductions under AV are likely, but under hot and dry weather conditions, growing conditions can become favorable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of short rotation alley cropping systems (SRACS) to improve the soil fertility of marginal post-mining sites in Brandenburg, Germany. Therefore, we annually investigated the crop alleys (AC) and black locust hedgerows (ABL) of a SRACS field trail under initial soil conditions to identify the short-term effects of tree planting on the storage of soil organic carbon (SOC) and its degree of stabilization by density fractionation. We detected a significant increase in SOC and hot-water-extractable organic C (HWEOC) at ABL, which was mainly restricted to the uppermost soil layer (0–10 cm). After 6 years, the SOC and HWEOC accumulation rates at ABL were 0.6 Mg and 46 kg ha−1 year−1, which were higher than those in the AC. In addition, comparatively high stocks of approximately 4.6 Mg OC and 182 kg HWEOC ha−1 were stored in the ABL litter layer. Density fractionation of the 0–3 cm soil layer at ABL revealed that the majority of the total SOC (47%) was stored in the free particulate organic matter fraction, which was more than twice that of the AC. At the same time, a higher and steadily increasing amount of SOC was stored in the occluded particulate organic matter fraction at ABL, which indicated a high efficiency for SOC stabilization. Overall, our findings support the suitability of black locust trees for increasing the soil fertility of the reclaimed mining substrate and, consequently, the high potential for SRACS to serve as an effective recultivation measure at marginal sites. Alley cropping agroforestry systems (ACS) are ascribed to have manifold positive ecological effects; nevertheless their application is still limited due to uncertain productivity of the agricultural crop, especially in the tree-crop competition zone. Therefore, this study investigated the variability of oilseed rape and winter wheat yield, respectively, at different distances from the tree strip edge in 2016 and 2017 in an ACS established in 2008 in northern Germany. The ACS consisted of strips of fast-growing poplars alternating with narrow (48 m) and wide (96 m) crop alleys, each with a crop rotation including winter oilseed rape and winter wheat. Each tree strip contained 6 rows of poplars with a density of 10,000 trees per ha. Moreover, multi-year (2009–2016) crop yield data of oilseed rape and winter wheat in the narrow and wide crop alleys were compared with those of a corresponding non-agroforestry control field. In general, crop yields observed in 2016 and 2017 in the narrow crop alleys at 1 m from the tree strip edges were on average 77% (oilseed rape) and 55% (winter wheat) lower than in the middle of the crop alley. One reason for low yield close to the tree strips might be the leaf litter coverage of the seedlings in autumn. Leaf litter deposition was highest at 1 m on the windward and the leeward side of the tree strips in 2015 and on the leeward side in 2016, respectively. However, the average long-term crop yields of the narrow crop alley, the wide crop alley and the control field did not differ substantially among each other. Although oilseed rape and winter wheat yields were lower close to the tree strips, this yield reduction did not negatively influence the average long-term crop yields of the ACS. During the last years, a demand for regionally produced biogas feedstocks was created by government subsidies to biogas production in Germany—contrary to the trend of specialization of agricultural production towards global commodity markets. The question arose whether this trend could contribute to an increased cultivation of uncommon crops and diversification of cropping patterns, owing to comparably different and less restricted feedstock requirements. In the cooperative research project "EVA," a multi-site experimental crop rotation field trial was conducted over 8 years at eight sites, representing the variety of soil-climatic conditions in Germany. The aim of the trial was to assess a variety of established and novel crops for anaerobic digestion. This paper presents the key findings of the trial. Special emphasis is given to biomass productivity and profitability. The chances for the approach "diversification of cropping patterns via energy cropping" are discussed. Results show that maize (average 4-year dry matter yield varied site-specific between 14.22 and 25.12 t ha−1) is clearly the most efficient crop for biogas production in Central Europe. Some cropping options for biogas feedstock production, such as winter triticale (whole crop, average yield of 6.71 to 15.17 t ha−1) or perennial fodder mixtures (average yield of 7.51 to 19.44 t ha−1) are feasible choices for farmers in some regions, which could contribute to diverse cropping systems. Over the past few years the number of biogas slurries, which are generally used as nitrogen fertilisers, have seen a steady increase in Germany. A mechanistic ammonia volatilisation model was developed to predict the ammonia losses of these slurries when applied to bare soil, maize, wheat and rye grass canopies. Data for model development were collected from several field measurements carried out at two locations in Northern Germany between the years of 2007 and 2008. Additionally, the behaviour of the slurries on and in the soil was investigated through the use of infiltration pot experiments. The model includes three main compartments: slurry, atmosphere and soil. The soil compartment model is relatively simple, as the slurry infiltration, nitrification and ploughing dislocation into the soil determined in the experiments showed quantitatively no significant differences between the tested slurries (mono-fermented, co-fermented and pig slurry) and soils (sand soil and loamy sand). Hence, instead of a complex soil model, stable reduction factors, as derived from the experiments, were implemented in the model. Simulated ammonia emissions were statistically compared (root mean square error (RMSE), modelling efficiency (ME), linear regression) to the observed emissions. All evaluations showed an acceptable model performance (RMSE = 1.80 kg N ha), although there were a few number of anomalies which could not be modelled in an adequate way. A model sensitivity analysis showed that temperature and slurry pH value are the main drivers of NH volatilization in the model. Following a change of +1°C or of +0.1 pH unit ammonia volatilization will increase by about 1% and 1.6% of the applied total ammoniacal nitrogen, respectively.
