Agriculture water use accounts for 70% of the total water withdrawal worldwide. The evapotranspiration during crop growth is one of the important hydrological processes in the agricultural water cycle. This study proposed the concept of artificial irrigation evapotranspiration of irrigated crops to describe that the evapotranspiration caused by irrigation water use. Irrigated crops rely on two kinds of water sources: precipitation and irrigation water. With the construction of irrigation schemes, the artificial irrigation evapotranspiration plays an increasingly important role in the dualistic water cycle system of irrigated cropland. To reveal the amount of artificial irrigation evapotranspiration of 17 categories of irrigated crops in China, this study proposed a new quantitative model system which was established based on traditional evapotranspiration models and soil water balance models. Based on the new model system, we calculated the annual artificial irrigation evapotranspiration of irrigated crops for the period 2013 to 2017 in China. The results showed that the proportion of artificial irrigation evapotranspiration to the total evapotranspiration of irrigated crops was 41.3%, whose value was 228.1 km3 a−1. The artificial irrigation evapotranspiration in different agricultural water management regions were 90.0 km3 a−1 in the northeast region, 86.0 km3 a−1 in the southeast region, and relatively low 52.2 km3a−1 in the west region. The results of this study can provide methods for water management and policy–making in agricultural irrigated areas, and it can also provide a preliminary understanding of the influence of human activities on the dualistic water cycle in cropland. Private practice mental health counselors are vulnerable to compassion fatigue, which can affect their personal well-being and the quality of services they provide. However, there is a notable scarcity of research focusing on compassion fatigue among this group. This study aimed to contribute to the field by providing a comprehensive profile of private practice mental health counselors in China, offering the first assessment of their compassion fatigue level, and examining the specific impact of characteristic variables on this phenomenon. A total of 109 counselors completed the Compassion Fatigue Short-Scale (CFSS) and a demographic characteristic form. The findings revealed a counseling group with limited maturity and professionalism, primarily holding bachelor's degrees, working part-time, and having limited experience in practice and supervision. The levels of compassion fatigue were found to be moderate to mild, with educational level and years of practice serving as negative predictors. The findings would enhance the understanding of the profile of private practice counselors in China, supporting the development of interventions to address compassion fatigue for local practice. Accurately ascertaining the S-wave arrival times of microseismic signals is crucial for improving the accuracy with which microseismic events can be located. However, the first arrival of an S-wave is often overlapped by the P-wave which can make it difficult to accurately determine the arrival time of the S-wave in tunnels. Therefore, an accurate method for determining the S-wave arrival time of microseismic signals in tunnels is urgently needed. In this paper, a novel method is proposed based on the instantaneous phase difference intensity (IPDI) of the S-wave between two microseismic sensors. The peaks in the IPDI directly indicate the first breaking of an S-wave thus allowing the arrival time of the S-wave to be identified. Tests using synthetic signals verify that the IPDI method can correctly determine the arrival time of an S-wave when the first break of the S-wave is overlapped by the P-wave. The IPDI method was further applied to microseismic monitoring in a deeply buried tunnel in the Jinping II hydropower station in China. The IPDI peaks were found to successfully highlight the arrival of S-waves that could not be determined manually. The location accuracy of rockburst and microseismic events was thus significantly improved using the new IPDI method. The IPDI method can identify the S-wave arrival time even in near-field MS monitoring cases where S- and P waves overlap. Hundreds of millions of internal migrants are present in cities in the developing world. Accurately predicting their commuting mode choice and clarifying the effect size of the influencing factors have become increasingly indispensable for formulating and executing socially inclusive transportation plans and policies. Yet, scholarship on internal migrants' travel mode choice is still scarce, particularly in the context of developing country. This study attempts to partly fill this gap. Using empirical data from Xiamen, China, it applies the Light Gradient Boosting (LightGBM) approach, a high-efficiency and high-performance machine learning framework, to predict the commuting mode choice of both the internal migrants and locals. The results show that (1) The built environment has larger impacts on locals' mode choice than on migrants'; (2) For both the migrants and locals, the relative importance of the built environment in predicting commuting mode choice exceeds that of socio-demographics and trip characteristics; (3) Distance to the closest commercial center is the most important factor influencing commuting mode choice of both groups, and bus stop density also contributes a great deal; hence, regional accessibility and transit infrastructure can be given higher priority in intervening the commuting behaviors of migrants and locals. (4) The LightGBM models yield rather high prediction accuracy; their results are further compared with those of conventional discrete choice models and are found to be generally consistent with the latter. The future state of drought in China under climate change remains uncertain. This study investigates drought events, focusing on the region of China, using simulations from five global climate models (GCMs) under three Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP1-2.6, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5) participating in the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISIMIP3b). The daily Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) is employed to analyze drought severity, duration, and frequency over three future periods. Evaluation of the GCMs' simulations against observational data indicates their effectiveness in capturing historical climatic change across China. The rapid increase in CO2 concentration under high-emission scenarios in the mid- and late-future century (2040–2070 and 2071–2100) substantially influences vegetation behavior via regulation on leaf stomata and canopy structure. This regulation decelerates the increase in potential evapotranspiration, thereby mitigating the sharp rise in future drought occurrences in China. Revealing changes in actual evapotranspiration is essential to understanding regional extreme hydrological events (e.g., droughts). This study utilized the Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM) to analyse the spatial and temporal characteristics of actual evapotranspiration over 40 years in the Southeast River basin of China. The relationship between changes in actual evapotranspiration and the drought index was quantified. The results indicated a significant increase in actual evapotranspiration in the Southeast River basin from 1981 to 2020 (2.51 mm/year, p < 0.01). The actual evapotranspiration components were dominated by vegetation transpiration (73.45%) and canopy interception (18.26%). The actual evapotranspiration was closely related to the normalised difference vegetation index (r = 0.78, p < 0.01), and vegetation changes could explain 10.66% of the increase of actual evapotranspiration in the Southeast River basin since 2000. Meanwhile, actual evapotranspiration and standardised precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) showed a highly significant negative spatial correlation, with a Moran's I index of − 0.513. The rise in actual evapotranspiration is an important trigger factor for seasonal droughts in the region. Tea plant necrotic ring blotch virus (TPNRBV) has emerged as a significant threat to tea plantations, primarily in China. Since 2020, similar symptoms have been observed in tea plants in northern Iran, raising concerns about the spread of this viral infection. In this study, we conducted an extensive investigation involving approximately 70 samples collected from both symptomatic and asymptomatic tea plants. Using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction with specially designed primers, we successfully amplified DNA fragments from 26 samples, confirming the presence of TPNRBV. Subsequent sequencing of these fragments revealed various segments of the TPNRBV genome. Our phylogenetic analysis revealed that the Iranian TPNRBV isolates formed a distinct sub-cluster alongside Chinese isolates, distinguishing them from Japanese isolates. These finding sheds light on the genetic diversity and relationships of TPNRBV across different regions. Additionally, we explored the potential modes of TPNRBV transmission. Mechanical transmission experiments confirmed the ability of the virus to infect Nicotiana rustica and Chenopodium quinoa seedlings, highlighting the risk of mechanical spread within tea plantations. Moreover, we investigated seed transmission and found evidence of TPNRBV in various parts of tea seeds, suggesting the possibility of seed-borne transmission. Overall, this comprehensive study enhances our understanding of the biological and molecular characteristics of TPNRBV, an emerging threat to global tea production. Our findings provide valuable insights into the virus's transmission dynamics and genetic diversity, which are essential for developing effective management strategies to mitigate its impact on tea cultivation worldwide. Exploring the characteristics and main influential factors of energy exchange and evapotranspiration (ET) in the rice-winter rape system and their response to winter rape abandonment is significant for advancing the knowledge on land surface processes. The daily and seasonal variations in the energy exchange from 2017 to 2020 and their governing environmental factors were examined for rice, winter rape, fallow seasons, based on a Bowen ratio energy balance measurement and path analysis together with principal component analysis (PCA). The results showed that the total latent heat flux (LE) of the rice-winter rape (spanning 317 days) and rice-winter fallow (spanning 332 days) rotation systems were 1458.4, 1652.1 MJ/m2, respectively. LE consumed the largest net radiation (Rn) proportion, with the mean seasonal values of LE/Rn of 0.87, 0.55, and 0.61 for rice, rape, and fallow seasons. Sensible heat flux (H) stayed low for rice but tracked with the LE for rape and fallow. The mean Bowen ratio was 0.13, 0.87, and 0.73 for rice, rape, and fallow seasons. The Priestley–Taylor coefficient for rice mostly stayed below 1.26, while the Priestley–Taylor coefficient for rape and fallow fluctuated around 1.26 except for lower than 1.26 in the late stage. The variables describing heat and water conditions [Rn, air temperature (Ta), soil temperature (TS), relative humidity (RH), vapor pressure deficit (VPD)] explained most of the total variance in LE, while precipitation, wind speed, and leaf area index had no significant effect on LE. Rn was the dominant environmental factor controlling LE mainly through the direct effect, followed by RH mainly through an indirect effect. VPD was another important factor for rice LE, and TS and Ta also considerably affect rape and fallow LE. The winter rape abandonment caused an increase in the average daily LE, ET, and Priestley–Taylor coefficient, and a decrease in the Bowen ratio relative to the rape. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

China has become one of the leading study abroad destinations worldwide. Recent research also indicates that international students encounter diverse life challenges and mental health issues in China. Therefore, scholars have shown increasing interest in their adjustment in Chinese social and academic settings. Seeking theoretical guidance from the Job Demands-Resources Model with mediation and moderation assumptions, our study aimed to test the dual processes (i.e., the health impairment process and the motivational process) leading to academic, sociocultural, and psychological adjustment, among international students sojourning in China. Using a convenience sampling method, our study recruited 1,001 participants (535 males and 466 females; Mage = 22.73; SD = 1.62) who completed an online survey including scales of perceived cultural distance (contextual demands), social support from local members (contextual resources), coping self-efficacy (personal resources), acculturative stress, intercultural engagement, as well as three types of cross-cultural adjustment (academic, sociocultural, and psychological adjustment). Results based on the structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses indicated that perceived cultural distance had indirect relationships with the three types of adjustment through the mediator of acculturative stress. Social support from locals had indirect relationships with the three types of adjustment through the mediators of acculturative stress and intercultural engagement. Coping self-efficacy had indirect relationships with academic and sociocultural adjustment through the mediator of intercultural engagement. Additionally, social support from locals was revealed as a moderator that buffered the relationship between perceived cultural distance and acculturative stress. These mediated and moderated relationships not only confirmed the dual processes underlying international student adjustment, but also added new knowledge of how demands and resources can interplay to predict the dual processes. A better reconciliation of haze pollution and economic growth has become the social consensus in China. The development of China's economy and air quality will be significantly impacted by its efforts to create high-speed rail (HSR). Based on panel data from 265 prefecture-level cities in China from 2003 to 2019, this paper investigates how the opening of HSR affects the spatial mismatch of haze pollution and economic growth by using the spatial mismatch index model, multi-period difference-in-differences (DID) model, and intermediary effect model. We find that the spatial mismatch in China has an overall decreasing trend. And its spatial agglomeration is dominated by low levels. Further empirical analysis shows that HSR opening can effectively restrain the spatial mismatch. Even after some robustness tests and endogenous treatment, the conclusion is still valid. In addition, population density, FDI, and industrial structure are also explicit factors affecting the spatial mismatch. Second, there is significant heterogeneity in the impact. This is reflected in the fact that HSR opening can suppress the spatial mismatch of service-oriented cities and the eastern region, while other cities and regions have no noticeable effect. Third, spatial transfer of haze pollution (STHP) and balanced development of economic growth (BEG) are two important conduction paths for the opening of HSR to affect the spatial mismatch. Specifically, HSR opening can constrain the spatial mismatch by inhibiting STHP and BEG. Estimating the health burden of air pollution against the background of population aging is of great significance for achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 3.9 which aims to substantially reduce the deaths and illnesses from air pollution. Here, we estimated spatiotemporal changes in deaths attributable to PM2.5 air pollution in China from 2000 to 2035 and examined the drivers. The results show that from 2019 to 2035, deaths were projected to decease 15.4% (6.6%–20.7%, 95% CI) and 8.4% (0.6%–13.5%) under the SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5 scenario, respectively, but increase 10.4% (5.1%–20.5%) and 18.1% (13.0%–28.3%) under SSP2-4.5 and SSP3-7.0 scenarios. Population aging will be the leading contributor to increased deaths attributable to PM2.5 air pollution, which will counter the positive gains achieved by improvements in air pollution and healthcare. Region-specific measures are required to mitigate the health burden of air pollution and this requires long-term efforts and mutual cooperation among regions in China. Estimating health burden of air pollution against the background of population aging is of significance for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3.9. This paper proposes a latent variable approach to examine the induced innovation hypothesis originating from Hicks (The theory of wages, Macmillan, London, 1932). It allows a flexible decomposition of total factor productivity into Type I (exogenous) and Type II (induced) technical changes using a latent variable d as an argument in a variable cost function. By making extensive use of duality theory, we are able to estimate the Hicksian input demand functions, which are explicit in d but may lack a closed-form representation in terms of observable variables such as input prices and output level. The "unobservability" of d is solved by using a numerical inversion estimation method. We apply this methodology with an appropriate estimator to investigate the impact of induced innovation on China's total factor productivity growth. Our findings indicate that the induced innovation hypothesis is strongly supported by the data and that induced innovation has a positive and profound effect on China's productivity growth. Fault grouting is important in preventing groundwater inrush into coal mines from aquifers underlying the coal seams. However, evaluating the effect of grouting in the coal mine is difficult and expensive; hence, the region is sparsely explored. Therefore, we propose a more economical and efficient method for investigating grouting in the coal mine, which utilizes a real-time microseismic monitoring system. A system is an integrated approach involving a deep neural network phase picker method, grid search location method, and double-difference seismic tomography method for enhanced real-time processing of the microseismic data of 1613A working face in Zhangji coal mine, China. The velocity structure of the 1613A working face has been inverted using the microseismic events in September 2020. We found that the grouting treatment area is considerably perturbed during mining, with the 50-m area below the mining floor characterized by a high seismic velocity of up to 4.3 km/ s, showing optimal grouting. The checkerboard resolution test shows that the seismic velocity results in concern have high reliability. The effect of grouting is well evaluated by machine learning-based microseismic catalog and passive seismic tomography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Numerous studies have found that jobs, amenities, and location influence housing prices in urban areas. However, there is still a lack of in-depth understanding of the impacts of these factors on various housing submarkets within a city. With the case study of Xiamen, this paper investigates the impacts of jobs, amenities, and location on four housing submarkets, classified by owner-occupied and rental housing, in inner and outer districts. The hedonic model, Chow test, and Tiao-Goldberger test are applied to analyze differentiation in the determinants of housing prices between four submarkets. The results show that all submarkets are influenced by blue-collar jobs (which have negative effects) and seascape (which has a positive impact). Besides, differentiated after submarkets show that school districts and public transportation have a greater influence on owner-occupied markets than on rental markets. A heterogeneity exists between inner-district and outer-district markets. For instance, bus rapid transit (BRT) has a positive effect on housing and rental prices in the outer districts but not in the inner districts. These differences are mainly caused by the disparities of spatial quality, economic development, and public facilities and amenities. Since Shi et al. proposed that the climate in the drylands of Northwest China experienced a significant transition from a "warming and drying" trend to a "warming and wetting" trend in the 1980s, researchers have conducted numerous studies on the variations in precipitation and humidity in the region and even in arid Central Asia. In particular, the process of the "warming and wetting" trend by using obtained measurement data received much attention. However, there remain uncertainties about whether the "warming and wetting" trend has paused and what its future variations may be. In this study, we examined the spatiotemporal variations in temperature, precipitation, the aridity index (AI), vegetation, and runoff during 1950–2019. The results showed that the climate in the drylands of Northwest China and the northern Tibetan Plateau is persistently warming and wetting since the 1980s, with an acceleration since the 1990s. The precipitation/humidity variations in North China, which are mainly influenced by summer monsoon, are generally opposite to those in the drylands of Northwest China. This reverse change is mainly controlled by an anomalous anticyclone over Mongolia, which leads to an anomalous easterly wind, reduced water vapor output, and increased precipitation in the drylands of Northwest China. While it also causes an anomalous descending motion, increased water vapor divergence, and decreased precipitation in North China. Precipitation is the primary controlling factor of humidity, which ultimately forms the spatiotemporal pattern of the "westerlies-dominated climatic regime" of antiphase precipitation/humidity variations between the drylands of Northwest China and monsoonal region of North China. The primary reasons behind the debate of the "warming and wetting" trend in Northwest China were due to the use of different time series lengths, regional ranges, and humidity indices in previous analyses. Since the EC-Earth3 has a good performance for simulating precipitation and humidity in Northwest and North China. By using its simulated results, we found a wetting trend in the drylands of Northwest China under low emission scenarios, but the climate will gradually transition to a "warming and drying" trend as emissions increase. This study suggests that moderate warming can be beneficial for improving the ecological environment in the drylands of Northwest China, while precipitation and humidity in monsoon-dominated North China will persistently increase under scenarios of increased emissions. Cratons formed due to the specific melting regime of the primitive mantle with elevated mantle temperature during Archean. However, each craton has undergone a distinct evolution history, and some have lost their stability. To investigate to what degree cratons in comparison with one another have been modified from their analogous initial form, we employed Sn-Pn differential (PSn) traveltimes to derive Vp/Vs ratio, which is thought to be related to Mg# of the uppermantle. We assessed Pn, Sn, and PSn data using three datasets based on epicentral distance: (1) 2°–12°, (2) 2°–7°, and (3) 7°–12°. The results suggest that most cratons show comparable seismic properties with high velocities and low Vp/Vs ratio, implying a highly depleted uppermost mantle that resembles the original residue from the partial melt extraction of the primitive mantle during the Archean. Conversely, the Eastern North China Craton (ENCC) displays the lowest P- and S-wave velocities, and noticeable high Vp/Vs ratios in all datasets, implying a systematic difference with other cratons. This observation suggests a scenario of total removal of the depleted Archean mantle lithosphere beneath the ENCC. In contrast, the Ordos Block located at the western part of the North China Craton (WNCC) shows velocities and Vp/Vs ratio comparable with those of the typical cratons, suggesting that it has still maintained its Archean mantle lithosphere. The Wyoming Craton has a high Vp/Vs ratio similar to that of the ENCC and a high P-wave velocity comparable to that of the typical cratons. These features suggest that the Archean mantle lithosphere has been significantly modified rather than totally removed and replaced by a younger fertile mantle. The Indian Craton presents a low Vp/Vs ratio and comparatively high velocities at shallow parts of the mantle lithosphere but a high Vp/Vs ratio at deeper parts similar to that of the ENCC, suggesting a partial modification of the Indian Craton at deeper parts. Based on the data of China's open-end stock funds and partial stock funds from 2009 to 2020, we take the implementation of green credit guidelines (GCG) as a quasi-natural experiment and investigate the impact of green credit policies on the net value crash risks of fund holding heavily polluting enterprise stocks. The results show that green credit policies will significantly increase the net value crash risks of fund holding heavily polluting enterprise stocks. Green credit policies increase the net value crash risks of fund holding heavily polluting enterprise stocks by increasing investor redemptions. Further tests show that better fund performance and higher portfolio concentration weaken the positive impact of green credit policies on the net value crash risks of fund holding heavily polluting enterprise stocks, and higher proportion of institutional investors strengthens the positive impact of green credit policies on the net value crash risks of fund holding heavily polluting enterprise stocks. This study examines China's budgetary policy during the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of China's insufficient ability to deal with a new crisis when the epidemic struck in March 2020 and as a result of the economic crisis that began in China in March 2020. In order to better comprehend China's economic status during COVID-19, the study relies on secondary data. The fiscal response of emerging market economies like India is less than in advanced economies. However, it is generally considered to be in line with the average for emerging market economies. As a result of the Disaster Management authority imposing a rigorous lockdown, unemployment rose, the trade cycle was interrupted, and manufacturing and service activities were affected. According to the study's findings, China's economic policies, namely its fiscal policy, responded in the years leading up to 2019 by increasing health expenditure, income transfer, welfare payments, subsidies, and reducing short-term unemployment. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, China's government has adopted a number of measures to minimize the damage to the economy. The study aims to analyze the impacts of capital misallocation and technological innovation on green development efficiency in China by using the panel data from 2000 to 2018. We employ the Super-SBM model to evaluate green development efficiency and use the system generalized method of moments (GMM) for empirical estimation. The results suggest that capital misallocation has a significant inhibitory effect on green development efficiency. Moreover, capital misallocation restrains technological innovation, which plays an important role in improving green development efficiency. Further research on the effect of regional heterogeneity indicates that the negative impact of capital misallocation on green development efficiency is more significant in the central and western regions, while the effect is not significant in the eastern region. Projecting mitigations of carbon neutrality from individual countries in relation to future global warming is of great importance for depicting national climate responsibility but is poorly quantified. Here, we show that China's carbon neutrality (CNCN) can individually mitigate global warming by 0.48 °C and 0.40 °C, which account for 14% and 9% of the global warming over the long term under the shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) 3-7.0 and 5-8.5 scenarios, respectively. Further incorporating changes in CH4 and N2O emissions in association with CNCN together will alleviate global warming by 0.21 °C and 0.32 °C for SSP1-2.6 and SSP2-4.5 over the long term, and even by 0.18 °C for SSP2-4.5 over the mid-term, but no significant impacts are shown for all SSPs in the near term. Divergent responses in alleviated warming are seen at regional scales. The results provide a useful reference for the global stocktake, which assesses the collective progress towards the climate goals of the Paris Agreement. Alternative teacher preparation programs have triggered global debates. This study analysed 16 fellows of an alternative teacher preparation program who entered rural schools located in China—a high-stakes testing context—with a strong disposition toward quality-oriented education. Drawing on Bourdieu's sociology, we revealed four forms of fellows' responses to the tensions between quality- and examination-oriented education: (1) Resistance to examination-oriented education; (2) "Betrayal" of quality-oriented education; (3) Reconciliation of the two educational orientations; and (4) Confusion about both. Pursuant to these findings, we suggest that program recruitment and training keep some distance from the "star fellow" narrative and develop localised materials to prepare fellows for the real-world challenges. Our paper situates EGRT fellows in coexisting and competing educational orientations, calls for more studies to construct global alternative teacher preparation as a space of contestation, and ignites more discussion regarding what educational quality is. Land use/cover change (LUCC) affects regional climate not only through its direct changes of land surface properties, but also through its further modifications of land–atmosphere interactions. Urban land expansion is a typical case of LUCC in highly populated areas and has been widely discussed about its impacts on regional air temperature, notably known as urban heat island (UHI) effects. Besides temperature, atmospheric humidity, as another key variable in hydrometeorology and climate, would be inevitably affected by LUCC as well. However, the impacts of LUCC on atmospheric humidity seem to have not been investigated as much as those on temperature. We examined atmospheric humidity changes by trend and change point analyses of humidity and heat content indicators of three representative urban agglomerations in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, China during 1965–2017, and found the evident urban dry island (UDI) effects which are characterized by significant humidity decrease and vapor pressure deficit increase. In urban cores with different levels of development, the severity of UDI is different. Furthermore, strong positive correlations between transpiration and evaporation (TEVP) and humidity, and between leaf area and TEVP were recognized during 2001–2017 when cities entered the accelerated stage of land expansion, indicating that LUCC affects regional climate through an ecohydrological way. We speculated that the UDI effect will not appear until urban land expands to a certain scale, for urbanization-induced LUCC may exert a larger influence on UDI than on UHI by considerably altering the latent heat flux in the later period of current urban expansion. The increasing impacts of urbanization on atmospheric humidity should attract wider attention in the future, so as to mitigate climate change and maintain sustainable development. Climate change can affect wind erosion power and hence induce changes in wind erosion rates. In this study, the wind erosion climate factor (C-factor), proposed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, was used to assess the impact of changes in climate on wind erosion climatic erosivity. The Mann-Kendall test was employed to detect trends in the C-factor during the period of 1961–2017 in the farming-pastoral zone of northern China. Sensitivity analysis was used to determine the sensitivity of the C-factor to changes in key climate factors. Furthermore, a comparison of the contributions of different climate factors was carried out to understand their impact on changes in the C-factor. The results indicated that most of the surveyed region exhibited decreasing trends in wind speed at a confidence level of 90%, while maximum and minimum temperatures showed increasing trends throughout the study area. As a consequence of decreasing wind speed, the annual C-factor exhibited significant decreasing trends, with a mean slope of −0.58/yr. Seasonal analysis revealed that in most regions, the changes in the C-factor had significant decreasing trends in spring, winter, and autumn, while in more than two-thirds of the study area, no significant change trends in the C-factor were detected in summer at a confidence level of 90%. Sensitivity analysis showed that the C-factor was most sensitive to wind speed, and that the sensitivity coefficients from July to September were much higher than those in other months. Contribution analysis revealed that, for most stations, wind speed (with greater values of sensitivity coefficients) was the dominant factor in the change of C-factor, while for some stations, the minimum temperature made the most contribution to the C-factor's change due to its dramatic changes during the study period. Although the minimum temperature sensitivity coefficient was the lowest of all the sensitivity coefficients, it is urgent to evaluate the expected impact of minimum temperature due to its possible changes in the future. Reference evapotranspiration (ET0) is a vital component in hydrometeorological research and is widely applied to various aspects, such as water resource management, hydrological modeling, irrigation deployment, and understanding and predicting the influence of hydrologic cycle variations on future climate and land use changes. Quantifying the influence of various meteorological variables on ET0 is not only helpful for predicting actual evapotranspiration but also has important implications for understanding the impact of global climate change on regional water resources. Based on daily data from 69 meteorological stations, the present study analyzed the spatiotemporal pattern of ET0 and major contributing meteorological variables to ET0 from 1960 to 2017 by the segmented regression model, Mann-Kendall test, wavelet analysis, generalized linear model, and detrending method. The results showed that the annual ET0 declined slightly because of the combined effects of the reduction in solar radiation and wind speed and the increase in vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and average air temperature in the Loess Plateau (LP) during the past 58 yr. Four change points were detected in 1972, 1990, 1999, and 2010, and the annual ET0 showed a zigzag change trend of 'increasing-decreasing-increasing-decreasing-increasing'. Wind speed and VPD played a leading role in the ET0 changes from 1960 to 1990 and from 1991 to 2017, respectively. This study confirms that the dominant meteorological factors affecting ET0 had undergone significant changes due to global climate change and vegetation greening in the past 58 years, and VPD had become the major factor controlling the ET0 changes on the LP. Normandy is the world's leading producer of flax fiber (Linum usitatissimu L.), which is mainly exported to China for textile manufacturing. Flax is a plant that is cultivated in spring and that grows in an oceanic climate with regular watering and limited thermal excesses. This article aims at projecting the impact of climate change on the phenology of this plant when subjected to climatic hazards that may occur during its development. These projections use two regional climate models (ALADIN-Climate and WRF) based on the two scenarios generated by the latest IPPC report—intergovernmental panel on climate change—(RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5). The rise in temperatures would result in a time-cycle reduction. Consequently, flax would not be exposed to the early summer water shortage. However, thermal conditions could be unfavorable, especially due to the increased frequency of heat days. Flax is also exposed to the risk of lodging during heavy rainfall episodes; however, the results are somehow contrasted between the two climate models used. The evidence regarding the association between long-term fine particulate (PM2.5) exposure and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in developing countries is limited. This study investigated the association between long-term exposure to PM2.5 and the prevalence of CVD among middle-aged and older adults. A total of 13,484 adults ≥ 45 years of age were surveyed in China, and logistic regression models were used to examine the association between PM2.5 and the prevalence of CVD. Furthermore, stratified analyses were conducted to explore potential effect modifiers. In addition, the burden of CVD attributable to PM2.5 was estimated. The analyses revealed that PM2.5 was associated with CVD, with an adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 1.18 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.12, 1.26) for each 10 μg/m3 increment in ambient PM2.5. Stratified analyses found that the elderly may be a vulnerable population. It was further estimated that approximately 20.27% (95% CI: 11.86%, 29.96%) of CVD cases could be attributable to PM2.5. Eco-geographical regionalization involves dividing land into regions by considering both intra-regional consistency and interregional disparity and is based on the pattern of differentiation of eco-geographical elements. Owing to the complexity of the land surface, and the limitation of data and appropriate methods, regions in China have hitherto been mapped manually, meaning that the process of mapping was non-repeatable. To make the regionalization technique repeatable, this study aimed to extract and quantify the expert knowledge of regionalization using an automated method. The rough set method was adopted to extract rules of regionalization based on the existing eco-geographical regionalization map of China, as well as its corresponding meteorological and geological datasets. Then, the rules for regionalization were obtained hierarchically for each natural domain, each temperature zone, and each humidity region. Owing to differences in zonal differentiation, the rule extraction sequence for the eastern monsoon zone and Tibetan Alpine zone was temperature zone first followed by humidity region, with the reverse order being applied for the northwest arid/semi-arid zone. Results show that the extracted indicators were similar to those of the existing (expert-produced) regionalization scheme but more comprehensive. The primary indicator for defining temperature zones was the ≥10°C growing season, and the secondary indicators were the January and July mean temperatures. The primary and secondary indicators for identifying humid regions were aridity index and precipitation, respectively. Eco-geographical regions were mapped over China using these rules and the gridded indicators. Both the temperature zones and humidity regions mapped by the rules show ≥85% consistency with the existing regionalization, which is higher than values for mapping by the commonly used simplified method that uses the classification of one indicator. The Qinling Orogen is a composite orogenic belt that can be subdivided into the North and South Qinling, broadly separated by the Shangdan suture zone. These two orogenic belts were generated by subduction-collisional processes in the Early Paleozoic and Late Triassic, respectively. During the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous, the eastern portion of the Qinling Orogen was tectonically reactivated due to westerly subduction of the Izanagi plate underneath the East China continental margin. The Qinling Orogen is well-endowed with numerous Au, Mo, Ag-Pb-Zn deposits that predominantly formed in the Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous, with rare Paleozoic varieties documented. In this study, we present garnet and zircon U-Pb dating results to show that the Huoshenmiao iron skarn deposit in the Tongbai area of North Qinling orogenic belt formed in the Early Silurian and is genetically related to subduction-related magmatism. The Huoshenmiao deposit consists of lenticular and stratiform orebodies that contain massive or densely disseminated magnetite variably associated with garnet, diopside, epidote, hornblende, and actinolite. Garnets from iron ores are andradite and grossular in composition (Ad83.1Gr13.3-Ad86.5Gr10.2) and characterized by enrichment in light rare earth elements (ΣLREE=57.85–103.82 ppm) and depletion in heavy rare earth elements (ΣHREE=5.50–11.34 ppm), with significantly positive Eu and Ce anomalies (δEu of 1.09–1.89 and δCe of 1.39–1.69). These compositional signatures are distinctly different from those of garnets in the ore-hosting metamorphic rocks that are typically dominated by almandine, spessartine and grossular (Al47.4Sp30.4Gr13.8-Al51.9Sp24.8Gr17.6), depleted in LREE (0.14–0.69 ppm), enriched in HREE (95.68–841.60 ppm) and have pronounced negative Eu anomalies (δEu=0.24–0.51). In addition, garnets from iron ores of the Huoshenmiao deposit contain abundant daughter mineral-bearing, multiphase fluid inclusions, further confirming their hydrothermal origin. Two samples of those hydrothermal garnets yield U-Pb dates of 437±9 Ma and 437±10 Ma (2σ), revealing a Paleozoic mineralization event that has long been ignored and rarely documented. These garnet dates agree well with zircon U-Pb dates of 438±4 Ma to 436±3 Ma for a gabbroic diorite and 430±4 Ma for a granite intrusion in close proximity of the mine, supporting a possible genetic link between the iron mineralization and Early Silurian magmatism. The Paleozoic intrusions are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs: Ba, K, Sr) and LREEs, depleted in high field strength elements (HFSEs: Nb, Ta, P, Ti), have whole-rock (87Sr/86Sr)i, εNd(t), and zircon εHf(t) values of 0.7039–0.7042, 3.32–4.33, and 13.0–14.9, respectively. These geochemical and isotopic characteristics suggest that the Paleozoic intrusions were affiliated with arc magmatism triggered by subduction of the Shangdan oceanic plate in the Early Paleozoic. Recognition of the Silurian Huoshenmiao iron skarn deposit opens a new window for exploration of Paleozoic mineral resources in the Tongbai area and other portions of the North Qinling Orogen. Creating world-class universities (WCUs) has recently become a significant policy and practice in higher education in China under the Double World-Class Project. However, some negative effects have encouraged decoupling from the policy goals. To identify the reasons, we conducted policy document analysis and purposive interviews at three elite universities, focusing on financial funding, discipline development, and human resources. First, the uneven funding plans by central and local governments shape non-competitive environments for universities, hindering the dynamic adjustment of the Double World-Class Project. Second, universities have closed or merged programs in weak academic disciplines to gain legitimacy and stability in conformance to WCU guidelines. Last, as a result of the unbalanced development of universities in east, middle, and west China, universities in the west are facing a serious brain drain. To achieve a higher level of performance, an increasing number of 'shadow academics' are being recruited by Chinese universities. These decoupling responses and manipulative strategies result from the dominating constituent in WCUs, ambiguity in policy contents, hierarchical control systems in higher education, and uncertain environments for universities. Sleep disorders in patients with end-stage renal disease are common but have rarely been reported in previous studies. Therefore, we examined the prevalence of sleep disorders and the risk factors for declining sleep quality in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). A multicenter prospective cohort study was conducted at five PD centers across different provinces in China. A total of 449 patients who underwent PD between March to November 2013 were enrolled. Demographic data, laboratory indicators, presence of depression, and sleep assessment data were collected. Sleep questionnaires reflecting five categories of sleep disorders, namely, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, excessive daytime sleepiness, possible narcolepsy, and sleepwalking and nightmares, were administered at baseline and at 24 months postoperatively. Sleep disorders were diagnosed when a patient had at least one sleep problem. At baseline, 335 (74.6%) patients had at least one type of sleep disorder. Depression, diabetes mellitus (DM), and male were found to be associated with the presence of a sleep disorder. At follow-up, the prevalence of insomnia, restless legs syndrome, and excessive daytime sleepiness had significantly increased in 285 patients. Furthermore, cardiovascular disease (CVD) was found to be associated with the presence of sleep disorders in patients with one or more disorders at baseline, whereas a low serum albumin level was found to be associated with sleep disorders in patients without any sleep disorders at baseline. The prevalence of sleep disorders was relatively high among PD patients at baseline and increased afterthe2-year follow-up. Depression, DM, and male were associated with all sleep disorders at baseline. CVD was associated with the presence of a sleep disorder at baseline and worse sleep quality at the 2-year follow-up; whereas a low serum albumin level was associated with the risk of acquiring a sleep disorder at the 2-year follow-up among patients with normal sleep status at baseline. The North China craton (NCC) was dominated by tectonic extension from late Cretaceous to Cenozoic, yet seismic studies on the relationship between crust extension and lithospheric mantle deformation are scarce. Here we present a three dimensional radially anisotropic model of NCC derived from adjoint traveltime tomography to address this issue. We find a prominent low S-wave velocity anomaly at lithospheric mantle depths beneath the Taihang Mountains, which extends eastward with a gradually decreasing amplitude. The horizontally elongated low-velocity anomaly is also featured by a distinctive positive radial anisotropy (VSH > VSV). Combining geodetic and other seismic measurements, we speculate the presence of a horizontal mantle flow beneath central and eastern NCC, which led to the extension of the overlying crust. We suggest that the rollback of Western Pacific slab likely played a pivotal role in generating the horizontal mantle flow at lithospheric depth beneath the central and eastern NCC. Dominated by an arid and semiarid continental climate, the Beijing-Tianjin Sandstorm Source Region (BTSSR) is a typical ecologically fragile region with frequently occurring droughts. To provide information for regional vegetation protection and drought prevention, we assessed the relations between vegetation cover change (measured by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI) and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) at different time-scales, in different growth stages, in different subregions and for different vegetation types based on the Pearson's correlation coefficient in the BTSSR from 2000 to 2017. Results showed that 88.19% of the vegetated areas experienced increased NDVI in the growing season; 48.3% of the vegetated areas experienced significantly increased NDVI (P < 0.05) and were mainly in the south of the BTSSR. During the growing season, a wetter climate contributed to the increased vegetation cover from 2000 to 2017, and NDVI anomalies were closely related to SPEI. The maximum correlation coefficient in the growing season (Rmax) was significantly positive (P < 0.05) in 97.84% of the total vegetated areas. In the vegetated areas with significantly positive Rmax, pixels with short time-scales (1–3 mon) accounted for the largest proportion (33.9%). The sensitivity of vegetation to the impact of drought rose first and then decreased in the growing season, with a peak in July. Compared with two subregions in the south, subregions in the north of the BTSSR were more sensitive to the impacts of drought variations, especially in the Xilingol Plateau and Wuzhumuqin Basin. All four major vegetation types were sensitive to the effects of drought variations, especially grasslands. The time-scales of the most impacting droughts varied with growth stages, regions, and vegetation types. Evapotranspiration is an important component of the water cycle, and possible trends in evapotranspiration can, among others, influence water management and agricultural production. Potential evapotranspiration (ETp) is a measure of the ability of the atmosphere to remove water from the surface through the processes of evaporation and transpiration. It plays an important role in assessing regional dry–wet conditions and variations in meteorological conditions. This study analyzed the change trends of monthly ETp and surface dryness and wetness in the Hancang River Basin and, through principal component analysis and correlation analysis, explored the main meteorological factors that affected ETp and the interactions between meteorological factors; ETp values were estimated using the FAO-56 Penman–Monteith method. The results showed that there was a large gap in ETp between different months in the Hancang River Basin, with a trend of first increasing and then decreasing within a year. The highest monthly evapotranspiration was 114.119 mm (July), and the lowest was 42.761 mm (January). The maximum relative humidity index was 0.822 (August), and the minimum was -0.979 (January). The average temperature, precipitation, average relative humidity, and solar radiation are positive factors that affect ETp, while average air pressure is a negative factor that affects ETp. Familiarity effect refers to the phenomenon that searching for a novel target among familiar distractors is more efficient than that searching for a familiar target among novel distractors. While the familiarity of distractors is considered as a key role on familiarity effect, the familiarity of targets contribute to this asymmetric visual search is unclear. The present study investigated how target familiarity influences visual search efficiency from the perspective of perceptual load. Experiment 1 using two similar Chinese characters ("甲" and "由") suggested that searching for a familiar target from familiar distractors is an inefficient search process in Chinese context. Experiment 2 adopted a dual-task paradigm with a visual working memory task to increase the perceptual load and attempt to affect the efficiency of searching a novel target (mirrored "舌") from familiar distractors ("舌"). Results demonstrated no difference in the search efficiency between single and dual-task conditions. The present study suggests that the familiarity of target does not influence the search efficiency with familiar distractors when involving semantic processing of Chinese characters. Additionally, the interference of extra working memory load would not impair the efficiency of searching target among familiar distractors, supporting the critical effect of distractor familiarity on the efficiency of visual search. Data has become one of the most valuable assets for governments and firms. Yet, we still have a limited understanding of how data reshapes international economic relations. This paper explores various aspects of data politics through the lens of China's digital rise and the country's global engagement. I start with the theoretical premise that data differs from traditional strategic assets (e.g., land, oil, and labor), in that it is nonrival and partially excludable. These characteristics have generated externality, commitment, and valuation problems, triggering three fundamental changes in China's external economic relations. First, data's externality problem makes it necessary for states to regulate data or even to pursue data sovereignty. However, clashes over data sovereignty can ignite conflicts between China and other countries. Second, the commitment problem in data use raises global concerns about foreign government surveillance. As data is easier to transfer across borders than physical commodities, Chinese tech companies' investments abroad are vulnerable to national security investigations by foreign regulators. Chinese tech companies, therefore, confront a "deep versus broad" dilemma: deep ties with the Chinese government help promote their domestic business but jeopardize their international expansion. Lastly, data's valuation problem makes traditional measures (e.g., GDP) ill-suited to measure the relative strengths of the world's economies, which may distort perceptions of China and other states. Drought is a major natural disaster that significantly impacts the susceptibility and flexibility of the ecosystem by changing vegetation phenology and productivity. This study aimed to investigate the impact of extreme climatic variation on vegetation phenology and productivity over the four sub-regions of China from 2000 to 2017. Daily rain gauge precipitation and air temperature datasets were used to estimate the trends, and to compute the standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index (SPEI). Remote sensing–based Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) data from a moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) was used to characterize vegetation phenology. The results revealed that (1) air temperature had significant increasing trends (P < 0.05) in all sub-regions. Precipitation showed a non-significant increasing trend in Northwest China (NWC) and insignificant decreasing trends in North China (NC), Qinghai Tibet area (QTA), and South China (SC). (2) Integrated enhanced vegetation index (iEVI) and SPEI variations depicted that 2011 and 2016 were the extremely driest and wettest years during 2000–2017. (3) Rapid changes were observed in the vegetation phenology and productivity between 2011 and 2016. In 2011, changes in the vegetation phenology with the length of the growing season (ΔLGS) = was − 14 ± 36 days. In 2016, the overall net effect changed at the onset and end of the growing season with ΔLGS of 34 ± 71 days. The change in iEVI per SPEI increased rapidly with a changing rate of 0.16 from arid (NWC, and QTA) to semi-arid (NWC, QTA and NC) and declined with a rate of − 0.04 from semi-humid (QTA, NC, and SC) to humid (SC) region. Taking the "One Million-Mu (666 km2)" Plain Afforestation (Phase I) Project (Phase I afforestation) in Beijing city as an example, we monitored the growth status of planted forest using long-term remote sensing images, and evaluated the impacts of afforestation on land use change and vegetation growth. We found there is a large space for improvement regarding the ecological benefits of the project. Moreover, we found forest patches with decreasing greenness after the afforestation were mainly converted from farmland with high greenness and low heterogeneity in terms of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). This implies that those farmland patches are inappropriate for afforestation. According to the results from Phase I afforestation and the impact of urbanization on green space, we constructed a series of spatial variables and generated a suitability map for the next "New Round of One Million-Mu (666 km2) Afforestation project" (Phase II afforestation). We then modeled the spatial distribution of Phase II afforestation based on the derived suitability map. This study is crucial for the scientific evaluation of afforestation projects for space planning (e.g., urban green space planning). Nowadays, urban rivers play an important role in city development and make great contributions to urban ecology. Most urban rivers are the drinking water sources and water quality is extremely critical. The current assessment method in national standard of China has multiple limitations; therefore, this paper introduces an advanced assessment, that is, Canadian Water Quality Index (CWQI). This method can help to provide comprehensive and objective water quality assessment for the urban rivers. Moreover, CWQI can prevent waste of the water resource, since current assessment is pessimistic and tent to underestimate water samples to a lower grade. Linyi development area is selected as study region and CWQI method is applied to assess two major urban rivers within the area. The water monitoring data from 2014 to 2017 is acquired in 24 parameters. Since the CWQI calculation is still based on traditional water quality measurement in parameters, there will be a huge cost when increasing research scale and accuracy. In this paper, remote sensing technique is employed to develop models of CWQI scores from satellite data. By utilizing 23 selected monitoring instances and matching satellite data, linear regression analysis shows that red band data has highest correlation with CWQI in both two urban rivers in the study region. In addition, two testing datasets with five instances for each river are used to validate the RS-based CWQI models and the results show that testing datasets can be fitted well. With the models, CWQI distribution diagrams are generated and assist both spatial and temporal analysis. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can indicate actual water quality pattern which is validated by field visit. Research has shown that the climate in northwest China has turned to warm-wet in recent decades. Does this mean that the entire northwest of China has become wet in the last few decades? In the context of the climate transition in northwest China, this paper investigates whether the Bosten Lake Basin (BLB) located in southern Xinjiang has been dry or wet in the last 30 years. We used the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and Temperature Vegetation Drought Index (TVDI) to investigate these changes. The results show that although the dry-wet changes indicated by the SPEI and TVDI exhibited slight spatiotemporal differences, the entire BLB reflected a tendency to be dry. That is, the BLB has not become wet during the climate transition in northwest China, but is developing a trend toward aridification. The main conclusions of this study are as follows: (1) The SPEI indicated a drying trend in seasonal and interannual variations in plains; in mountains, except in spring and summer it has a drying trend, too. (2) The TVDI showed that although the drying trend in summer and winter was weaker than that in spring and autumn in the BLB, where some regions represented a significant tendency toward wetness owing to seasonal or annual changes, the entire study area has still become more dry. There is a lack of studies on whether market distortions inhibit the ecological efficiency. This study introduces the ecological efficiency based on the bootstrap-data envelopment analysis (DEA) method as the indicator of environmental performance in China, uses the transcendental logarithmic production function to calculate factor price distortion, and further identifies whether the factor price distortion has a negative impact on the ecological efficiency using the system generalized method of moments (GMM) method. Meanwhile, institutional quality is considered a threshold variable to examine the relationship between factor price distortion and ecological efficiency based on the threshold model. The result shows that factor price distortion significantly inhibits the improvement of ecological efficiency. Moreover, institutional quality is considered to be the threshold of factor price distortion affecting ecological efficiency. Further investigation of heterogeneity effect suggests that the inhibitory impact of factor price distortion on ecological efficiency is more significant in the central and western regions. This study provides a supplement to the study on environmental performance from the perspective of factor distortions and expands the framework of the influence mechanism of factor price distortion affecting ecological efficiency. Local governments restrict cross-regional flows of factors and products for achieving the purpose of profit, which lead to market fragmentation. China's domestic market is fragmented, leading to the situation that market boundaries are demarcated. We use the relative price method to measure market fragmentation and find that market fragmentation is indeed a serious problem in China. This study evaluates the ecological efficiency using the bootstrap DEA method that takes air and water pollution into account and investigates the effect of market fragmentation on ecological efficiency based on the system GMM approach by employing data from a panel of 29 provinces in China during the period 2000–2015. The results indicate that there are differences in ecological efficiency among provinces. The market fragmentation has negative impact on ecological efficiency, which shows market fragmentation significantly inhibits the improvement of ecological efficiency. The similar findings are confirmed by a series of robustness tests, which include the alternative indicator and sub-sample regression. Based on the above findings, the central government should reduce market fragmentation, promote market integration, increase the efficiency of resource allocation, and improve environmental quality. An experimental seasonal drought forecasting system is developed based on 29-year (1982–2010) seasonal meteorological hindcasts generated by the climate models from the North American Multi-Model Ensemble (NMME) project. This system made use of a bias correction and spatial downscaling method, and a distributed time-variant gain model (DTVGM) hydrologic model. DTVGM was calibrated using observed daily hydrological data and its streamflow simulations achieved Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency values of 0.727 and 0.724 during calibration (1978–1995) and validation (1996–2005) periods, respectively, at the Danjiangkou reservoir station. The experimental seasonal drought forecasting system (known as NMME-DTVGM) is used to generate seasonal drought forecasts. The forecasts were evaluated against the reference forecasts (i.e., persistence forecast and climatological forecast). The NMME-DTVGM drought forecasts have higher detectability and accuracy and lower false alarm rate than the reference forecasts at different lead times (from 1 to 4 months) during the cold-dry season. No apparent advantage is shown in drought predictions during spring and summer seasons because of a long memory of the initial conditions in spring and a lower predictive skill for precipitation in summer. Overall, the NMME-based seasonal drought forecasting system has meaningful skill in predicting drought several months in advance, which can provide critical information for drought preparedness and response planning as well as the sustainable practice of water resource conservation over the basin. China has been under international pressure for the death sentences meted out to foreigners for drug-related offenses. Domestically, the sentencing of foreign offenders is perceived to be too lenient compared to that of the natives under similar circumstances. We discuss the due process protections in processing foreigners charged and convicted for capital drug offenses within the context of international law. Further, to empirically assess the sentencing of such cases, we use a sample of 192 cases including both offender groups to examine the role of citizenship status, case characteristics, and defense arguments on the outcome of either an immediate or suspended death sentence. Findings indicate that foreign offenders raise different defense arguments compared to that of native offenders; but citizenship status does not play a key role in the multivariate model; rather the number of defense arguments accepted by the court and the processing time help predict the sentencing outcome. Trace elements are key regulators of metabolism and physiological pathways, and their levels change during aging. Hair, as a biological sample, has attracted much attention due to its ease of collection and slow substance metabolism. Also, trace elements in hair can reveal the distribution of essential nutrients and toxic elements in the body pools. Therefore, we investigated the lifestyle and dietary status by questionnaire and measured 8 trace elements in hair and 6 elements in blood of a sample of elders over 80 residing in Hainan province of China. Our data showed that the concentration of Se, Fe and Pb dropped as people grow older, but Mn rose. Changes in trace elements may affect enzyme activity and biological pathways, and are associated with many diseases, including cancer and chronic diseases. In addition, association between age-related diseases and trace elements are increasingly being reported, suggesting that approaches of combining nutrition with longevity studies in the further study will help us to identify the mechanisms whereby trace elements affect the aging process. The expansion of rubber plantations in northern Southeast Asia over the last 20 years displaced shifting cultivation and tropical forests. In Xishuangbanna, SW China, rubber occupied 22% of the area by 2010, reducing lowland forest to scattered fragments, with severe impacts on plants, animals, and ecosystem services. The rubber price has declined steeply since 2011, but consequences for forest biodiversity have not previously been explored. We use a new approach for vegetation mapping, combining phenological information with object-based classification, to produce land-use maps for 2002, 2010, 2014, and 2018. During 2002–2018, forest cover declined continuously, from 71 to 52% of the land area, while rubber increased from 11 to 24% by 2014, before declining to 21% by 2018. Other farmlands also declined while tea plantations increased. Forest patch number increased 8-fold during 2001–2014, while patch size decreased 10-fold, but these trends were partly reversed after 2014, with the loss of numerous small (< 1 ha) patches. Most larger (> 10 ha) patches in 2018 were forest throughout the study period, but many smaller patches are secondary. Currently, 20% of Xishuangbanna is in protected areas. Unprotected forest is disproportionately on steep slopes at high altitudes, while biodiversity is highest in valleys and at low altitudes, where only smaller patches remain, creating challenges for conservation planning. We recommend that all the largest patches are preserved, plus smaller patches selected for their biota, and that forest restoration is used to restore connectivity and buffer small patches of high conservation value. Due to recent official policy changes, China's sustainable urbanization has entered a new type of multi-target heterogeneous situation which has never been scientifically researched before. To deal with this new heterogeneous scenario, we introduce a hybrid heterogeneous data envelopment analysis method that contains input segment estimation and efficient frontier construction. We also introduce a bi-level benchmarking method that benchmarks each city's eco-efficiency and uses those benchmarks to guide sustainable urbanization completion in an empirical study of 206 Chinese prefecture-level cities' sustainable urbanization. Our main empirical results show that: (1) China's urbanization is now suffering from serious unsustainability; (2) China's sustainable urbanization is independent of urban scale; (3) resource over-consumption and pollutant over-emission are the two complementary forces that slow down China's sustainable urbanization; (4) almost all prefecture-level cities involved in this empirical study should set "Urban–rural integration" as the urbanization development target; and (5) China's current urbanization has a serious development target mismatch, and this target mismatch is thought to be an important indirect factor that drives China's urbanization to a low sustainability level. Based on this empirical analysis, we recommend two urbanization policies, "Constructing a distinctive city" and "Constructing hub-and-spoke urban agglomeration", for Chinese government consideration.
