This paper draws inference on the effect of changes in indirect taxation on household spending on cinema and performing arts using data from the Spanish household expenditure survey. As of September 2012, value-added tax (VAT) on cinema and performing arts in Spain was raised 13 percent points, with the exception of the Canary Islands which are not part of the Spanish VAT territory. Indirect taxation levied on cinema and performing arts through the General Indirect Tax of Canary Islands (Impuesto General Indirecto de Canarias, IGIC) had changed in July 2012 by only 2 percent points. Such an uneven raise in the tax rates is the source of exogenous variation used for identification in this paper. As the sample of treated households (exposed to the VAT rise) is much larger than the sample of untreated households (exposed to the IGIC rise), we use causal inference methods to estimate the average treatment effect of the VAT rise on the untreated households. We find that the average household expenditure on cinema and performing arts of the untreated households would not have changed significantly, had untreated households been exposed to the VAT rise. However, this average treatment effect would not have been homogeneous, as we identify an average treatment effect conditional on participation of 52.37 euros. The location, size, and structure of the farmlands and hydraulic systems built by the Indigenous inhabitants of Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain, remain unknown. This hampers our ability to understand how they organized agricultural production and how European settlers transformed local landscapes to build commercial plantations in the late fifteenth century. This paper combines an analysis of archival sources with the study of agricultural landscapes and practices to identify and describe the fields that were employed by the first colonists of Agüimes and Temisas, and to derive information about the location, design, and management of the pre-Hispanic farmlands. This paper describes design, observation methodology, results and interpretation of the GPS surveys conducted in the areas of the N-W of Tenerife where deformation was detected using InSAR. To avoid undesirable antenna positioning errors in the stations built using nails, we designed and used calibrated, fixed-length metal poles, allowing us to guarantee that the GPS antenna was stationed with a height repeatability of the order of 1 mm and of less than 3 millimeters on the horizontal plane. The results demonstrate that this system is ideal for field observation, especially to detect small displacements that might be masked by accidental errors in height measurements or centering when observed with a tripod. When observations were processed, we found that using different antenna models in the same session sometimes causes errors that can lead to rather inaccurate results. We also found that it is advisable to observe one or two stations in all the sessions. The results have reconfirmed the displacement in the Chío deformation zone for the period 1995–2000 and indicate a vertical rebound from 2000 to 2002. They also confirm that the subsidence detected by InSAR to the south of the Garachico village has continued since 2000, although the magnitude of the vertical deformation has increased from around 1 cm to more than 3 cm a year. Detected displacements could be due to groundwater level variation throughout the island. A first attempt of modelling has been made using a simple model. The results indicate that the observed deformation and the groundwater level variation are related in some way. The obtained results are very important because they might affect the design of the geodetic monitoring of volcanic reactivation on the island, which will only be actually useful if it is capable of distinguishing between displacements that might be linked to volcanic activity and those produced by other causes. The recent eruption of the Cumbre Vieja Volcanic Ridge in La Palma started on September 19, 2021, after a series of seismic swarms and lasted 85 days. Seismic swarms showed a large variability but could be grouped in two categories: long-term swarms located at subcrustal depth, showing b-values close to 2.2 and low rates (from 4.1 to 56 events/hour) and short-term swarms located at very shallow depths, showing moderate b-values [0.9, 1.6] and high rates (from 58 to 460 events/hour). Magma ascent velocity within the 0–10 km depth range varied between 0.03 and 0.21 km/h. Spatial and temporal characterization of the b-values for the entire magmatic process during the selected study period also indicated three distinct dynamics during a preparation phase starting from at least October 2017–August 2021, the eruptive phase from September 2021–December 2021 and a post-eruption process from the end of the eruption in December 2021–May 2022. These stages with clearly different values reflect two scenarios: one corresponding to the time before the eruption with magma ascending from a 39-km depth to the surface, and a second stage corresponding to the eruption itself which includes two seismicity concentrations within the 30–40 km depth interval and a shallow concentration from 0–20 km, corresponding to the crustal reservoir and movement towards the surface. Coastal geomorphological systems have undergone major changes in recent decades as a result of both natural and anthropic phenomena, with the growth of urban tourism having one of the biggest impacts. This has been the case of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria city (Canary Islands, Spain), which has expanded considerably since the late nineteenth century. The objective of this work is to identify the coastal landforms that existed in the city environment before 1879 and evaluate the extent to which they have been preserved or lost because of urban expansion on five dates (1879, 1954, 1966, 1981 and 2018). This evaluation was made possible through the integration, in a geographic information system, of information from historical and current documents, both cartographic and photographic, and from oral sources and field data. The results of the study reveal that 848.1 ha of the initial coastal landforms have been lost, with only 16.7% of the area they occupied remaining. The landforms that have experienced the most losses have been the aeolian sedimentary systems, which have totally disappeared since 1981. The least altered have been calcarenitic reefs, coastal active cliffs and sandy beaches. The land uses of the occupied coastal landforms, from highest to lowest, are: residential and tourist, road infrastructure, public spaces and green areas, port, facilities and industrial. The academic, social, educational and urban planning interests of this research are addressed in the discussion. The plutonic rocks of the Basal Complex of La Gomera, Canary Islands, Spain, were studied by means of major and trace element contents and by H-O-Sr-Nd isotope compositions in order to distinguish primary magmatic characteristics and late-stage alteration products. Deciphering the effects of alteration allowed us to determine primary, plume-related compositions that indicated D- and 18O-depletion relative to normal upper mantle, supporting the conclusions of earlier studies on the plutonic rocks of Fuerteventura and La Palma. Late-stage alteration took place during the formation of the intrusive series induced by interaction with meteoric water. Inferred isotopic compositions of the meteoric water indicate that the water infiltrated into the rock edifice at a height of about 1500 m above sea level, suggesting the existence of a subaerial volcano which was active during the intrusive activity and that it has been either distroyed or remain buried by later volcanic and landslide events. The European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is a conservation and social dilemma in the Canary Islands. It is the main prey of endangered species, it causes severe impacts on vegetation, as well as has a considerable hunting economic value but damages agriculture. We assessed drivers of European rabbit habitat selection on Fuerteventura Island (Canary Islands, Spain) in order to understand the ecology and to contribute with data for managing this introduced species. To measure rabbit abundance, we counted the total number of fresh pellets and latrines. We used Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) to analyze the relationship between rabbit abundance and four groups of variables that represented the biological requirements of the species (environmental, food resources, refuges/shelters, and biological interactions). Hierarchical partitioning techniques were used to estimate the explanatory capacity of these different groups of variables. Our model better explained fresh pellet abundance (89% of total deviance) than latrine abundance (57%). Variables related to food resources best explained the abundance of both latrines and pellets. We identified a set of plant species highly correlated with rabbit abundance, which probably makes up the species' diet. Variables relating to refuge/shelter and the environmental were also relevant. Interactions with other mammals did not strongly affect rabbit abundance on Fuerteventura Island. Mean annual precipitation and temperature were variables that individually best explained abundance, although half of their relevance is shared with others non-environmental variables. Abstract  Tubular-shaped concretions and concretionary dykes occur in Holocene fossil beach deposits between the township of El Médano and Punta Roja in southern Tenerife, Canary Islands. These sediment structures have been interpreted either as the result of (a) the interaction between hot ignimbrites that overflowed wet beaches; (b) fast accumulation of beach sands on hot and degassing ignimbrites; (c) paleoliquefaction caused by an earthquake (seismites). Based on the interpretation as seismites, an intense paleoearthquake with a moment magnitude of M = 6.8 was proposed to be responsible for the generation of the paleoliquefaction structures. However, we here reinterpret the sedimentary structures in question using the general criteria diagnostic for rhizocretions and root tubules with respect to their orientation, size, branching system, and style of cementation and, thus, consider them, to be of biogenic origin. OBJECTIVE:: To evaluate a nutrition education intervention using a radio programme in the Canary Islands. DESIGN:: Pre-post quasiexperimental epidemiological study. SETTING:: Free living population in the Canary Islands, Spain. SUBJECTS:: A sample of 1753 individuals out of 6846 volunteers participating in the educational programme. INTERVENTIONS:: A 6-week radio programme consisting of 12 didactic units with supplementary print support material and four optional attendance-based healthy cooking seminars.
