The objective of the study was to validate adapted versions of the Glasgow Anxiety Scale for people with Intellectual Disabilities (GAS-ID) simultaneously developed in English and French. A sample of 361 youth with mild to moderate intellectual disability (ID) (M = 15.78 years) from Australia (English-speaking) and Canada (French-speaking) participated in this study. The results supported the factor validity and reliability, measurement invariance (between English and French versions), a lack of differential items functioning (as a function of youth's age and ID level, but not sex in the English-Australian sample), temporal stability (over one year interval), and convergent validity (with global self-esteem and school loneliness) of a bi-factor exploratory structural equation modeling representation of the GAS-ID. This study proposes a revision (R) of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale for youth with ID (CESD-ID) in English and French. 346 youth (36.02% girls) with mild (51.26%) and moderate (48.78%) ID (11–22 years; M = 15.69), enrolled in secondary schools in Canada (French-speaking; n = 115), and Australia (English-speaking; n = 231), as well as their parents and teachers, participated in this study. Results support the reliability, factor validity, equivalence (sex, ID level, comorbidities, and country), and convergent validity (with youth-, parent-, and teacher-rated measures of depression, anxiety, and loneliness/social isolation) of the CESD-ID-R. The sexual assault of persons with mental disabilities (also described as cognitive, intellectual and developmental disabilities) occurs at alarmingly high rates worldwide. These assaults are a form of gender-based violence intersecting with discrimination based on disability. Our research on the treatment of such cases in the Canadian criminal justice system demonstrates the systemic barriers these victims face at the level of both substantive legal doctrine and trial procedure. Relying on feminist legal theory and disability theory, we argue in this paper that abuses of trust and power underlie most sexual assaults of women with mental disabilities. We argue that existing Criminal Code provisions in Canada are inadequate to address this type of exploitation because courts have consistently failed to recognize that such abuses of power and trust are fundamentally inconsistent with any notion of voluntary consent. The cross-sectional study compared the clinical and need profiles for clients with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in seven mental health case management programs in Toronto, Canada on March 31, 2013. Unmet needs in domains within four broad clusters were measured by staff using an internationally utilized tool, the Camberwell Assessment of Need. Among the 2560 clients, 8.3 % had a co-occurring IDD. For most assessed domains rates of unmet need were not different for persons with and without IDD. However, the IDD group had greater unmet needs for adaptive functioning/skills and cognitive needs [self-care ( p = 0.023), education ( p < 0.001), transportation ( p < 0.001), and information on condition ( p = 0.038)]. While clients with IDD and psychiatric diagnoses often receive poor quality care, in the case management programs examined their rates of unmet need were similar to individuals without IDD across most assessed domains, including in the areas of addictions and physical health care. Mothers of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) experience considerable amounts of distress and experiences of crisis. The Family Adjustment and Adaptation Response model provides a theory for understanding the experience of distress and crisis in families, and the purpose of the present study was to examine experiences of distress in mothers of individuals with ASD using this framework. We specifically investigated how parent empowerment and positive gain were related to their experiences of distress, whether as mediators or as moderators of child aggression. Participants included 156 mothers of children with ASD ranging in age from 4 to 21 years. Mothers completed an online survey of demographics, problem behaviors, family empowerment, positive gain, and distress. We conducted path analyses of multiple mediation and moderation. Results indicated that greater child problem behavior was related to less parent empowerment, which was related to greater maternal distress, supporting empowerment as a partial mediator. At the same time, greater child aggression was not related to maternal distress in mothers who report high rates of positive gain, suggesting that parent gain functions as a moderator. This study investigated how the school experiences and personal characteristics of youth with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) contribute to their longitudinal trajectories of anxiety. To this end, we relied on a sample of 390 youth with mild (48.2%) to moderate (51.8%) levels of ID, aged from 11 to 22 (M = 15.70), and recruited in Canada (n = 140) and Australia (n = 250). Across three yearly time points, all participants completed self-report measures of anxiety, school climate, and victimization. Our results revealed a slight normative decrease in anxiety over time and showed that experiences of school victimization were associated with higher levels of anxiety (initially and momentarily) and increases in victimization were accompanied by increases in anxiety over time. Perceptions of attending a school that fosters security and promotes learning also tended to be accompanied by lower levels of anxiety (initially and momentarily). Momentary increases in perceptions of attending a school that fosters positive peer interactions were associated with momentary decreases in anxiety, whereas momentary increases in perceptions of attending a school characterized by positive teacher-student relationships and an equitable treatment of all students both led to small momentary increases in anxiety once all other components of student school experiences were considered. This study investigates associations between initial levels and change in the quality of the relationships youth with intellectual disabilities (ID) share with their parents and teachers, and changes in their levels of depression over time. A sample of 395 youth with mild (48.3%) and moderate (51.7%) ID, aged between 11 and 22 (M = 15.69), were recruited in Canada (n = 142) and Australia (n = 253). Youth completed self-report measures of relationship quality and depression twice over a one-year period. Initial levels of warmth (β = −.109) and conflict (β = −.302) predicted decreases in depression. Increases in warmth predicted decreases in depression (β = −.179), while increases in conflict predicted increases in depression (β =.268). This study investigates the nature of the social interaction profiles observed among youth with intellectual disabilities (ID), defined while considering their relationships with their parents, peers, and teachers, as well as the implication of these profiles for self-esteem, aggressive behaviors, and prosocial behaviors. A sample of 393 youth with mild (48.2%) to moderate (51.8%) levels of ID, aged between 11 and 22 (M = 15.70), was recruited in Canada (n = 141) and Australia (n = 253). Our results revealed four profiles, corresponding to Socially Isolated (23.24%), Socially Integrated (39.83%), Socially Rejected (28.37%) and Socially Connected (8.57%) youth with ID. The socially integrated and connected profiles both presented higher self-esteem, more prosocial behaviors, and less aggressive behaviors than the socially isolated and rejected profiles. Autistic youth have an increased risk of mental health problems. Despite the efficacy of various psychotherapeutic approaches for autistic youth, they often do not receive these interventions. Research is needed to identify patterns of effective treatment for autistic youth and whether they differ from those used for youth with other neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g., attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder; ADHD). We compared clinicians' (N = 557) knowledge, confidence and practices when treating autistic youth and youth with ADHD. Although ratings were moderately high overall and similar interventions were used for both groups, clinicians were significantly less knowledgeable and confident when supporting autistic clients compared to clients with ADHD. Despite anxiety being a prevalent mental health problem in children, little data exist on the pervasiveness and levels of anxiety symptoms in kindergarteners. Data from the Early Development Instrument, a teacher-completed, population-level measure of child development, were collected across Canada from 2004 to 2015. The final analytic sample consisted of 974,319 children of whom 2.6% were classified as "highly anxious". Compared to children who exhibited "few to none" anxious behaviors, highly anxious children were more likely to be male, have English/French as a second language, and have a special needs designation. Furthermore, compared with their less anxious peers, highly anxious children had between 3.5 and 6.1 higher odds of scoring below the 10th percentile cut-off in physical, social, language/cognitive and communication domains. Our findings suggest that anxious behaviors are related to children's overall health and illustrate the consistency and extensiveness of anxiety at a very young age among Canadian children. This study assessed needs and outcomes for people with developmental disability (DD) to understand the socioeconomic status of this group prior to implementation of the Accessible Canada Act in June 2019. The 2017 Canadian Survey on Disability (CSD) was used to analyze data for a sample of individuals with self-reported disability. Data related to employment, education, income, housing, caregivers, and use of government benefits is reported. Compared to the general Canadian public, persons with DD are less likely to: finish high-school or post-secondary education; participate in the labor force or be employed; and earn on average less/year in total income. This qualitative study examined Chinese immigrant mothers of children with developmental disabilities (DDs) about their experiences of stressors, social support, and traditional cultural beliefs in Canada. Fifteen mothers were recruited from Toronto through one community organization. One-on-one semi-structured in-depth interviews on mothers in Mandarin were used in private settings. A descriptive qualitative approach was applied (Sandelowski, Research in Nursing & Health, 23, 334–340, 2000, Research Nursing Health, 33(1), 77–84, 2010). Analyses were guided by House's (1981) classification of social support (structural, instrumental, emotional, and perceptive). Mothers expressed challenges in accessing services for their children, such as limited financial resources, occupational unemployment, excessive paper work, long waiting times, language barriers, limited knowledge of social services, emotional strain, transportation difficulties, dispersed services, and feelings of "loss of face." All mothers actively seek treatments for their children without traditional "reciprocity thought." The findings provide a better understanding of Chinese immigrant mothers' experiences raising children with DDs in Canada. Implications of the study are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There presently exists limited information or studies on means to support immigrant families as they attempt to access quality services for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). An ASD diagnosis is the gateway to support services and adapted interventions. Yet, studies show that immigrant families typically experience longer delays in obtaining a diagnosis and more challenges in gaining access to services. Twenty-four families who immigrated to Québec (Canada) participated in semi-structured interviews in which they listed the obstacles and facilitators encountered in their service trajectory to obtain a diagnosis for their child. Families' attitudes toward ASD, as a function of native culture, and their advice to other families in a similar situation are were also reported. Obstacles most often mentioned by participants were the waiting period for diagnostic services, feelings of social isolation, and a lack of professionals' knowledge about ASD. Parental advocacy, the competency and expertise of the professionals who conducted the evaluation, and parental education and awareness of ASD were the most frequently named facilitators. Finally, the most common recommendations made to other parents were to be persistent and proactive. In light of these reported experiences and perceptions, a series of clinical recommendations are provided to guide ASD evaluation practices in multicultural communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Promoting self-determination (SD) in youth with disabilities is positively related to better post-secondary outcomes, such as employment and independence. Despite extensive research into SD and quality of life (QoL) for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the relation between the two has not been examined for young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) without intellectual disability (ID). The aim of this pilot study was to examine the relationship between two complementary measures of SD, namely the Arc’s Self-Determination Scale (Wehmeyer and Kelchner 1995) and the AIR Self-Determination Scale (Wolman et al. 1994), and QoL for young adults with ASD without ID. Thirty young adults with ASD without ID living in Canada completed self-report questionnaires of SD and QoL. Correlational analyses indicated that two measures of SD were significantly associated with QoL. Regression analyses revealed that individuals with higher SD scores reported higher perceptions of life satisfaction. Thus, SD, assessed by two complementary measures, was found to be positively associated with QoL. Subsequent research should further elucidate the association between SD and QoL and examine how best to promote SD as a means of enhancing the QoL of young adults with ASD as they transition into adulthood. The article discusses a study on the importance of sex education training for support workers who assist adults with developmental disabilities (DDs). Topics include the study involving participants from two psychology departments at a university in Canada, the attitude of support workers towards dealing with sexuality-related issues facing adults with (DDs) such as romantic relationships, dating and marriage, and the need for sex education classes to cover sexual abuse and sexual rights.

Summary: We created a 30-item Frailty Index in the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study. A Frailty Index is a sensitive measure that can quantify fracture risk according to degree of frailty. Our results indicated that at any age, frailty was an important independent risk factor for fracture over 10 years. Introduction: In later life, frailty has been linked to fractures. It is likely that the antecedents of fracture are seen across the life course, in ways not entirely captured by traditional osteoporosis risk factors. Using data collected from the prospective, population-based Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study (CaMos), we created the 30-item CaMos Frailty Index and examined whether it was associated with incident fractures over 10 years. Methods: All CaMos participants aged 25 years and older ( n = 9,423) were included in the analysis. To examine the relationship between baseline Frailty Index scores and incident fractures, a competing risk proportional sub-distribution hazards model was used with death considered a competing risk. Analyses were adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, education level, femoral neck T-score, and antiresorptive therapy. Results: At baseline, the mean age was 62.1 years [standard deviation (SD) 13.4], and 69.4 % were women. The mean Frailty Index score was 0.13 (SD 0.11), ranging from 0 to 0.66. For every 0.10 increase in Frailty Index scores (approximately one SD), the hazard ratio was 1.25 ( p < 0.001) for all fractures, 1.18 ( p = 0.043) for hip fractures, and 1.30 ( p ≤ 0.001) for clinical vertebral fractures. Conclusion: The CaMos Frailty Index quantified fracture risk according to degree of frailty. Irrespective of age and bone mineral density, the Frailty Index was associated with hip, vertebral, and all-type clinical fractures.
