Modifications of algorithms for the classification of single-layer, vertical development clouds, and multilayer clouds based on a probabilistic neural network and a neuro-fuzzy classifier are proposed. Clouds are classified into 16 types according to the meteorological standard, including the combined subtypes of stratus, altocumulus, cirrus, and cirrostratus clouds. The article uses a description of clouds based on information about the texture of their images on satellite images from MODIS and its products with data on the physical parameters of clouds. The structure of classification algorithms is described. The results of the use of statistical models of image texture and physical parameters of clouds for initializing membership functions for a neural-fuzzy classifier are presented. Systems of effective classification characteristics for different classification algorithms are formed based on the GRAD modified truncated search method. The recognition results of single-layer, vertical development clouds, and multilayer clouds based on the corresponding test samples and full-size sets of MODIS satellite data with different spatial resolution are discussed. According to the pulverized coal combustion flame image texture features of the rotary-kiln oxide pellets sintering process, a combustion working condition recognition method based on the generalized learning vector (GLVQ) neural network is proposed. Firstly, the numerical flame image is analyzed to extract texture features, such as energy, entropy and inertia, based on grey-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) to provide qualitative information on the changes in the visual appearance of the flame. Then the kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) method is adopted to deduct the input vector with high dimensionality so as to reduce the GLVQ target dimension and network scale greatly. Finally, the GLVQ neural network is trained by using the normalized texture feature data. The test results show that the proposed KPCA-GLVQ classifier has an excellent performance on training speed and correct recognition rate, and it meets the requirement for real-time combustion working condition recognition for the rotary kiln process. The sea-sky line is an important basis for marine unmanned equipment to perceive the sea environment. However, due to the interference of many external factors, such as sea fog, illumination, and sea target occlusion, sea-sky line detection is challenging. Therefore, we present a texture feature-based local adaptive Otsu segmentation and Hough transform for sea-sky line detection. In this method, image texture features and weighted texture quantization are used to determine the sea-sky area. Based on this sea-sky area, a longitudinal block strategy is introduced, and a new adaptive Otsu segmentation method is applied to obtain the binary image of the sea-sky area. The obtained binary image is then post-processed to enhance the sea-sky line edge information. On this basis, a new adaptive Canny edge detector is applied, and the sea-sky line is extracted by the Hough transform. The experimental results show that the proposed sea-sky line detection method has high accuracy and robustness when handling images of complex marine environments. Compared with other algorithms, the detection error and the error standard deviation of the proposed method are relatively small, indicating that this method is more stable and accurate than other algorithms. Background: The aim of this study is to investigate the added value of combining tumour blood flow (BF) and metabolism parameters, including texture features, with clinical parameters to predict, at baseline, the pathological complete response (pCR) to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer (BC). Methods: One hundred and twenty-eight BC patients underwent a 18F-FDG PET/CT before any treatment. Tumour BF and metabolism parameters were extracted from first-pass dynamic and delayed PET images, respectively. Standard and texture features were extracted from BF and metabolic images. Prediction of pCR was performed using logistic regression, random forest and support vector classification algorithms. Models were built using clinical (C), clinical and metabolic (C+M) and clinical, metabolic and tumour BF (C+M+BF) information combined. Algorithms were trained on 80% of the dataset and tested on the remaining 20%. Univariate and multivariate features selections were carried out on the training dataset. A total of 50 shuffle splits were performed. The analysis was carried out on the whole dataset (HER2 and Triple Negative (TN)), and separately in HER2 (N=76) and TN (N=52) tumours. Results: In the whole dataset, the highest classification performances were observed for C+M models, significantly (p-value<0.01) higher than C models and better than C+M+BF models (mean balanced accuracy of 0.66, 0.61, and 0.64 respectively). For HER2 tumours, equal performances were noted for C and C+M models, with performances higher than C+M+BF models (mean balanced accuracy of 0.64, and 0.61 respectively). Regarding TN tumours, the best classification results were reported for C+M models, with better performances than C and C+M+BF models but not significantly (mean balanced accuracy of 0.65, 0.63, and 0.62 respectively). Conclusion: Baseline clinical data combined with global and texture tumour metabolism parameters assessed by 18F-FDG PET/CT provide a better prediction of pCR after NAC in patients with BC compared to clinical parameters alone for TN, and HER2 and TN tumours together. Two models have been proposed in this paper first combine the vectors of the three features and feed them to the ANN classifier. Second, use the majority voting of the result of three features to take the decision. This is followed by a ANN classifier; in this model we have trained the system with 30 training 20% validation 50% testing. We evaluated the effectiveness of the classification framework for identifying spliced images by compare the result with the manual label which is done by the people who have created the data sets. In this approach we have combine different features to capture different information and feed them to the neural network to identify the splicing image. The findings outcome from this study have shown an improved approach that automatically splicing image forgery identification. We have evaluated the splicing image forgery identification using the texture features. Summary: Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the correlation between textural features from 18fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG-PET) or computed tomography (CT) and EGFR mutation status in patients with stage IV adenocarcinoma lung cancer. Methods: In all, 71 patients who were diagnosed with stage IV adenocarcinoma lung cancer between April 2014 and August 2018 were included in this study. 18F-FDG-PET/CT scanning and EGFR mutation tests were performed before targeted molecular therapy. Textural features were extracted from manually segmented volumes of tumors, and highly dependent features were excluded. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to establish predictive models for detection of EGFR mutations. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were applied to evaluate areas under the curves (AUCs) of each model. Results: Of the 71 patients, 39 (54.9%) were EGFR mutation and 32 (45.1%) showed wild-type. EGFR mutation status was significantly associated with female sex (P = 0.026). In multivariate analysis, three PET (co-occurrence contrast, intensity-size-zone low-intensity large-zone emphasis, and texture spectrum max spectrum) and two CT quantitative features (intensity-size-zone high-intensity zone emphasis and normalized co-occurrence second angular moment) were independent predictors of EGFR mutation status. The predictive model generated from combined clinical and textural features showed a better predictive value than the model from textural features alone (AUC 0.897 vs 0.864). Conclusions: Textural features combined with clinical features could establish a model for improving the predicting power of EGFR mutation status in patients with stage IV adenocarcinoma lung cancer. Feature extraction is an important part for coal and gangue recognition, which has direct impact on accuracy of recognition. However, the existing feature extraction methods for coal and gangue are not ideal, and so a feature extraction method with multi-fractal is proposed based on energy field normalization for target recognition of coal and gangue in this paper. In the method, the concept of target energy field is established based on 3D grey surface, and the normalized target energy is calculated by using pixels. Then, after analysis of the feature extraction process, a feature extraction algorithm with multi-fractal is proposed based on energy field, in which 3D grey surface is divided by different grid forms, and the pixels in grid are counted to obtain the probability density distribution matrix of pixels. The results of multiple feature extraction is observed visually from probability density distribution, spatial feature distribution, and multi-fractal spectrum to illustrate the measurability of the method for target textures, which is the quantitative attribute of feature extraction. In the experiment, this method is used to quantitatively measure grey texture, and the effectiveness of measured features in coal and gangue recognition is compared with other methods. The experiment results show that the method can achieve effective quantitative measurement for coal and gangue texture, and the recognition accuracy is higher than other methods. Early detection and diagnosis of brain tumors are essential for early intervention and eventually successful treatment plans leading to either a full recovery or an increase in the patient lifespan. However, diagnosis of brain tumors is not an easy task since it requires highly skilled professionals, making this procedure both costly and time-consuming. The diagnosis process relying on MR images gets even harder in the presence of similar objects in terms of their density, size, and shape. No matter how skilled professionals are, their task is still prone to human error. The main aim of this work is to propose a system that can automatically classify and diagnose glioma brain tumors into one of the four tumor types: (1) necrosis, (2) edema, (3) enhancing, and (4) non-enhancing. In this paper, we propose a combined texture discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and statistical features based on the first- and second-order features for the accurate classification and diagnosis of multiclass glioma tumors. Four well-known classifiers, namely, support vector machines (SVM), random forest (RF), multilayer perceptron (MLP), and naïve Bayes (NB), are used for classification. The BraTS 2018 dataset is used for the experiments, and with the combined DWT and statistical features, the RF classifier achieved the highest average accuracy whether for separated modalities or combined modalities. The highest average accuracy of 89.59% and 90.28% for HGG and LGG, respectively, was reported in this paper. This paper aims to develop an automatic feature extraction system for detecting icebergs in Antarctica. Extracting suitable features to discriminate an iceberg from sea ice and land melting based on its content is tedious. Especially in Synthetic Aperture Radar data, high image content is highly affected by speckle noise. Establishing the appropriate spatial relationship between pixels is not producing much accuracy with the standard low-level features. The proposed method introduces the two-level iceberg detection and tracking algorithm. The available samples were used to train the first-level convolution neural network-based features. False-positive predictions have been removed using the multiscale contourlet-based Haralick texture features in the second level. The final detected iceberg movement has been tracked using the temporal image data. The distance moved in both temporal images is computed with the help of latitude and longitude information. This paper presents classification of five different types of milled rice grain using various texture feature extraction models. Four different gray level based texture features extraction techniques are discussed in this work. The classification task is performed using an adaptive threshold back propagation neural network. The above four texture feature extraction techniques are compared with that of the proposed gray-level-size-zone matrix based rotation invariant texture model. The classification outcome of the proposed texture features extraction model is also validated through publicly available texture dataset from Brodatz's database. Results show that classification task based on the proposed texture model is able to achieve higher accuracy both in rice and standard data as compare to other four different texture features extraction techniques discussed in this work. The automated and accurate detection of brain tumors is challenging for classifying brain Magnetic Resonance (MR) images. The conventional techniques for diagnosing the images are tedious and inefficient in decision making. Therefore, this work proposes an adaptive and non-invasive method for accurately classifying images into pathological and normal brain MR images to overcome these drawbacks. This system uses the Skull Stripping algorithm for removing the non-cerebral tissues. We have developed the Modified version of Simplified Pulse-Coupled Neural Network for segmenting the Region of Interest. The Stationary Wavelet Transform is employed for transforming the image to extract the multiresolution data from the segmented images. The dimensionality of the transformed images is high. Thus, texture- and intensity-based features are extracted from transformed images, and the features of least entropy are selected to make a set of prominent features. Finally, Probabilistic Neural Network and Linear Programming Twin Support Vector Machines with Newton-Armijo algorithm are applied for the classification of images. The validation of the experiments is carried out on the three databases, viz., DB-66, DB-160, and DB-255. The experimental results show that the suggested scheme is robust and effective as compared to other state-of-the-art schemes. The suggested method can assist the radiologists in treatment planning. The problem of segmentation of natural and technogenic objects by panchromatic satellite images of ultra-high spatial resolution (<1 m) using texture analysis is considered. The effectiveness of various statistical methods for extracting textural features is analyzed. On the basis of numerical experiments, methods have been identified that make it possible to segment with high accuracy (>95%) the main types of natural and anthropogenic objects, as well as various structures of the plant canopy. The TTSPCA method is proposed, which makes it possible to share the most informative features extracted using various statistical methods. The results of test calculations show that this method has higher accuracy (>99%) in solving the problem of texture segmentation compared to the considered standard approaches. A tremendous amount of video data is transferred over the Internet from one location to another, and its amount is growing exponentially every day. Significant advances made in multipurpose video editing software technology have considerably increased the chances of digital video tampering/forgeries. Therefore, the authenticity of digital video has become important. In this paper, the passive algorithm based on the correlation consistency between entropy coded (DistrEn2D and MSE2D) frames for video forgery detection is proposed. The entropy-based texture feature, such as two-dimensional distribution entropy (DistrEn2D) and bi-dimensional multiscale entropy (MSE2D), is used in the proposed algorithm. This algorithm works in four stages and can investigate the presence of multiple forgeries in the videos. The first stage is pre-processing. In step second, the texture feature is extracted from the video frames. After that, inter-frame correlation consistency between Entropy coded frames is investigated to detect multiple forgeries. In the final stage, multiple forgeries are localized in the video using an abnormal point detection. The total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) content is representative index for measuring the freshness of cooked meat. The study investigated integrating spectral and image information from visible and near-infrared hyperspectral imaging for predicting TVB-N values in cooked beef during storage. Nine optimal wavelengths were selected by uninformative variable elimination (UVE) and successive projections algorithm (SPA). Thirty-six singular values as texture features were extracted using discrete wavelet transform (DCT). Partial least squares regression (PLSR) and least squares-support vector machine (LS-SVM) models were established using spectral, image, and their fusion information. The models based on data fusion yielded satisfactory prediction results: PLSR gave R c 2 and R P 2 values of 0.9512 and 0.9401 with RMSEC and RMSEP of 1.9037 and 1.8942; LS-SVM gave R c 2 and R P 2 values of 0.9674 and 0.9579 with RMSEC and RMSEP of 1.6538 and 1.5435. The distribution of TVB-N values from sample images was visualized using the fused LS-SVM model with image processing algorithms. This indicated that integrating spectral and image information from hyperspectral imaging coupled with the LS-SVM or PLSR algorithm could predict the TVB-N value and visualize its distribution in cooked beef. Heritage sites are vulnerable to damage due to social, anthropological and environmental factors. Major Earthquakes are followed by damage to cultural heritage buildings. The assessment of such building damage is a critical problem. Earth Observation data, owing to its property of being non-contact, cost effective, synoptic view and high repeatability, has a significant role to play in estimation of damage in the earthquake affected areas. Currently, several and varied types of remote sensing data have become available, and therefore, appropriate methods for rapid assessment and analysis of the data need to be developed. Rapid damage assessment is critical to minimize loss in terms of life and property. In case of cultural monuments, rapid assessment can minimize damage and help in the conservation of monument. This research focuses on evolving a robust method for rapid identification and extraction of damaged heritage building structures, especially those affected by disasters such as earthquakes. In this study, we propose to examine the utility of advance texture algorithms such as Gabor, fractal and semi-variogram for rapid damage detection in heritage building structures. The methodology attempts to automatically highlight damaged portions of the structure through a knowledge driven rule set. The technique was able to extract the damaged area from the heritage building structure with the use of high-resolution space borne data. It is observed that feature extraction algorithms based on fractal and variogram provide better results than the Gabor based textures and are very useful in the case of high-resolution satellite imagery. Both the methods are able to extract damaged features in both shadowed and non-shadowed regions of the image. Hence the problems posed by shadowed dead grounds on EO data can be effectively resolved. However, it is also observed that the advance texture feature extraction algorithms are useful only in case of high-spatial resolution dataset and has limited use for rapid damage assessment from medium and low resolution datasets. Crowd density estimation is a challenging research problem in computer vision and has many applications in commercial and defense sectors. Various crowd density estimation methods have been proposed by researchers in the past, but there is an utmost need for accurate, robust and efficient crowd density estimation techniques for its practical implementation. In this paper, we propose a fine-tuned and computationally economical, ensemble regression-based machine learning model for crowd density estimation. The WorldExpo'10 dataset has been used for experimental analysis and model performance evaluation. We extract variety of features in texture-based features such as gray-level co-occurrence matrix, local binary pattern and histogram of oriented gradients, structure-based features such as perimeter pixel and the orientation of pixels, and segment-based handcrafted features from each patch of the image and use an optimum combination of these features as input to the regression model. To achieve optimized memory utilization and faster speed, principal component analysis is employed to reduce the dimensions of the lengthy feature vector. Extensive experiments on different fronts ranging from the model hyperparameter optimization, features optimization and features selection were conducted, and at each step, we selected the most favorable results as input to the optimized model. The performance of the model is evaluated based on two popular metrics, i.e., mean absolute error and mean squared error. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was introduced as an alternative to destructive methods for determining the quality parameters of meat products, since MRI is a non-destructive, non-ionizing, and innocuous technique. The use of MRI is linked to the use of computer vision algorithms and data mining techniques. Thus, the success of MRI could not be understood without referring to the implementation of powerful algorithms to handle all data generated. In this study, a new texture algorithm was developed in order to obtain new features based on the radial distribution of the textures from MRI. This new algorithm is called Radial Texture Algorithm (RTA) and it was compared with four classical texture features approaches. The results obtained allow describing the semantic context of the texture features for this new algorithm and the relationship among the features from this algorithm and the classical approaches. Besides, the results obtained by means of these computer vision algorithms were correlated with the results obtained by means of physico-chemical and sensory parameters of the Iberian loins. All of computer vision algorithms achieved correlation coefficients higher than 0.500, noting that RTA reached the highest correlation coefficients in almost all cases. These high correlation coefficients confirm the proposed algorithm as an alternative to the other computational texture features approaches in order to compute the physico-chemical and sensory parameters of meat products in an accurate, fast, non-destructive and efficient way. Automatic segmentation of land use and land cover from high resolution remote sensing imagery has been an essential research area in image processing for the past two decades. Timely and reliable information of land use and land cover is very much essential in administration for proper planning and decision making in various areas like agriculture, urban development, environment protection, etc. In this paper, a new algorithm ULCDSA (Unsupervised Linear Contact Distributions Segmentation Algorithm) is proposed for unsupervised segmentation of high resolution panchromatic data. Texture features extracted with the help of linear contact distributions and mathematical morphology are used in this paper. The proposed method has been implemented and tested on various panchromatic images of N.R.S.C's Cartosat-II data sets, Google earth images and on other aerial images. Rationale and objectives: The ultrasound B-mode-based morphological and texture analysis and Nakagami parametric imaging have been proposed to characterize breast tumors. Since these three feature categories of ultrasonic tissue characterization supply information on different physical characteristics of breast tumors, by combining the above methods is expected to provide more clues for classifying breast tumors.Materials and methods: To verify the validity of the concept, raw data were obtained from 160 clinical cases. Six different types of morphological-feature parameters, four texture features, and the Nakagami parameter of benignancy and malignancy were extracted for evaluation. The Pearson's correlation matrix was used to calculate the correlation between different feature parameters. The fuzzy c-means clustering and stepwise regression techniques were utilized to determine the optimal feature set, respectively. The logistic regression, receiver operating characteristic curve, and support vector machine were used to estimate the diagnostic ability.Results: The best performance was obtained by combining morphological-feature parameter (e.g., standard deviation of the shortest distance), texture feature (e.g., variance), and the Nakagami parameter, with an accuracy of 89.4%, a specificity of 86.3%, a sensitivity of 92.5%, and an area under receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.96. There was no significant difference between using fuzzy c-means clustering, logistic regression, and support vector machine based on the optimal feature set for breast tumors classification.Conclusion: Therefore, we verified that different physical ultrasonic features are functionally complementary and thus improve the performance in diagnosing breast tumors. Accurate categorization of cirrhosis liver image in ultrasound modality is of great importance in medical diagnosis and treatment. Health informatics is important as it provides quick predictions on diseases based on nearness of symptoms. Modelling solutions for the same on cloud using deep learning is the motivation of this paper. Here, we propose a deep learning model associated with correlation based feature selection method for cirrhosis image classification. We compare the results with three other conventional classifiers algorithms to improve the better classification accuracy. First in pre-processing stage, noises are eliminated from pathological scan images by using modified laplacian pyramid non-linear diffusion filter. From the pre-processed scan images, each cirrhosis region is obtained under the guidance of radiology or physicians. Then, after extracting the complete features of each patch by gray level, local binary pattern and scale invariant feature, a feature selection technique is applied to choice the predominant texture features for each classifier. Finally a convolution neural network is implemented to improve the performance of classifiers in terms of sensitivity, specificity and accuracy. Convolution neural network algorithm with two hidden layers gives more accuracy in classifying cirrhosis image with 98% sensitivity. Experiments are carried out with 990 cirrhosis image patches which demonstrates that our proposed deep learning classifier perform 100% well than original classifiers in terms of accuracy. We propose a multiscale texture features based on Laplacian-of Gaussian (LoG) filter to predict progression free (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in patients newly diagnosed with glioblastoma (GBM). Experiments use the extracted features derived from 40 patients of GBM with T1-weighted imaging (T1-WI) and Fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images that were segmented manually into areas of active tumor, necrosis, and edema. Multiscale texture features were extracted locally from each of these areas of interest using a LoG filter and the relation between features to OS and PFS was investigated using univariate (i.e., Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, log-rank test and Kaplan-Meier estimator) and multivariate analyses (i.e., Random Forest classifier). Three and seven features were statistically correlated with PFS and OS, respectively, with absolute correlation values between 0.32 and 0.36 and p < 0.05. Three features derived from active tumor regions only were associated with OS (p < 0.05) with hazard ratios (HR) of 2.9, 3, and 3.24, respectively. Combined features showed an AUC value of 85.37 and 85.54% for predicting the PFS and OS of GBM patients, respectively, using the random forest (RF) classifier. We presented a multiscale texture features to characterize the GBM regions and predict he PFS and OS. The efficiency achievable suggests that this technique can be developed into a GBM MR analysis system suitable for clinical use after a thorough validation involving more patients. Objectives: To evaluate the prognostic value of texture features based on late gadolinium enhancement cardiac magnetic resonance (LGE-CMR) images in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) patients with systolic dysfunction.Methods: 67 HCM patients with systolic dysfunction (41 male and 26 female, mean age ± standard deviation, 46.20 years ± 13.38) were enrolled. All patients underwent 1.5 T CMR cine and LGE imaging. Texture features were extracted from LGE images. Cox proportional hazard analysis and Kaplan-Meier analysis were used to determine the association of texture features and traditional parameters with event free survival.Results: Family history (hazard ratio [HR]=2.558, 95 % confidence interval [CI]=1.060-6.180), NYHA III-IV (HR=5.627, CI=1.652-19.173), left ventricular ejection fraction (HR=0.945, CI=0.902-0.991), left ventricular end-diastolic volume index (HR=1.006, CI=1.000-1.012), LGE extent (HR=1.911, CI=1.348-2.709) and three texture parameters [X0_H_skewness (HR=0.783, CI=0.691-0.889), X0_GLCM_cluster_tendency (HR=0.735, CI=0.616-0.877) and X0_GLRLM_energy (HR=1.344, CI=1.173-1.540)] were significantly associated with event free survival in univariate analysis (p<0.05). The HR of LGE extent (HR=1.548 [CI=1.046-2.293], 1.650 [CI=1.122-2.428] and 1.586 [CI=1.044-2.409] per 10 % increase, p<0.05) remained significant when adjusted by one of the three texture features.Conclusion: Increased LGE heterogeneity (higher X0_GLRLM_energy, lower X0_H_skewness and lower X0_GLCM_cluster_tendency) was associated with adverse events in HCM patients with systolic dysfunction.Key Points: • Textural analysis from CMR can be applied in HCM. • Texture features derived from LGE images can capture fibrosis heterogeneity. • CMR texture analysis provides prognostic information in HCM patients. This paper investigated the possibility of discriminating tomato yellow leaf curl disease by a hyperspectral imaging technique. A hyperspecral imaging system collected hyperspectral images of both healthy and infected tomato leaves. The reflectance spectra, first derivative reflectance spectra and absolute reflectance difference spectra in the wavelength range of 500-1000 nm of both background and the leaf area were analyzed to select sensitive wavelengths and band ratios. 853 nm was selected to create a mask image for background segmentation, while 720 nm from the reflectance spectra, four peaks (560, 575, 712, and 729 nm) from the first derivative spectra and, four wavelengths with higher values (586, 720 nm) and lower values (690, 840 nm) in the absolute difference spectra were selected as a set of sensitive wavelengths. Four band ratio images (560/575, 712/729, 586/690, and 720/840 nm) were compared with four widely used vegetation indices (VIs). 24 texture features were extracted using grey level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), respectively. The performance of each feature was evaluated by receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. The best threshold values of each feature were calculated by Yonden’s index. Mean value of correlation (COR_MEAN) extracted from the band ratio image (720/840 nm) had the best performance, whose AUC value was 1.0. The discrimination result for a validation set based on its best threshold value was 100%. This research also demonstrated that multispectral images at 560, 575 and 720 nm have a potential for detecting tomato yellow leaf curl virus infection in field applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The study was designed to evaluate 1) the relationship between PET image textural features (TFs) and SUVs, metabolic tumour volume (MTV), total lesion glycolysis (TLG) and tumour characteristics in a large prospective and homogenous cohort of oestrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer (BC) patients, and 2) the capability of those parameters to predict response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). Methods: 171 consecutive patients with large or locally advanced ER+ BC without distant metastases underwent an F-FDG PET examination before NAC. The primary tumour was delineated with an adaptive threshold segmentation method. Parameters of volume, intensity and texture (entropy, homogeneity, contrast and energy) were measured and compared with tumour characteristics determined on pre-treatment breast biopsy (Wilcoxon rank-sum test). The correlation between PET-derived parameters was determined using Spearman's coefficient. The relationship between PET features and pathological findings was determined using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test. Results: Spearman's coefficients between SUV and TFs were 0.43, 0.24, -0.43 and -0.15 respectively for entropy, homogeneity, energy and contrast; they were higher between MTV and TFs: 0.99, 0.86, -0.99 and -0.87. All TFs showed a significant association with the histological type (IDC vs. ILC; 0.02 < P < 0.03) but didn't with immunohistochemical characteristics. SUV and TLG predicted the pathological response ( P = 0.0021 and P = 0.02 respectively); TFs didn't ( P: 0.27, 0.19, 0.94, 0.19 respectively for entropy, homogeneity, energy and contrast). Conclusions: The correlation of TFs was poor with SUV parameters and high with MTV. TFs showed a significant association with the histological type. Background: Texture features are being increasingly evaluated in F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (F-FDG PET) as adjunctive imaging biomarkers in a number of different cancers. Whilst studies have reported repeatability between scans, there have been no studies that have specifically investigated the effect that the time of acquisition post-injection of F-FDG has on texture features. The aim of this study was to investigate if texture features change between scans performed at different time points post-injection. Results: Fifty-four patients (30 male, 24 female, mean age 35.1 years) with neurofibromatosis-1 and suspected malignant transformation of a neurofibroma underwent F-FDG PET/computed tomography (CT) scans at 101.5 ± 15.0 and 251.7 ± 18.4 min post-injection of 350 MBq F-FDG to a standard clinical protocol. Following tumour segmentation on both early and late scans, first- ( n = 37), second- ( n = 25) and high-order ( n = 31) statistical features, as well as fractal texture features ( n = 6), were calculated and a comparison was made between the early and late scans for each feature. Of the 54 tumours, 30 were benign and 24 malignant on histological analysis or on clinical follow-up for at least 5 years. Overall, 25/37 first-order, 9/25 second-order, 13/31 high-order and 3/6 fractal features changed significantly ( p < 0.05) between early and late scans. The corresponding proportions for the 30 benign tumours alone were 22/37, 7/25, 8/31 and 2/6 and for the 24 malignant tumours, 11/37, 6/25, 8/31 and 0/6, respectively. Conclusions: Several texture features change with time post-injection of F-FDG. Thus, when comparing texture features in intra- and inter-patient studies, it is essential that scans are obtained at a consistent time post-injection of F-FDG. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, different texture-analysis methods are used to describe different cloud types in MODIS satellite images. A universal technique is suggested for the formation of efficient sets of textural features using the algorithm of truncated scanning of the features for different classifiers based on neural networks and cluster-analysis methods. Efficient sets of textural features are given for the considered classifiers; the cloud-image classification results are discussed. The characteristics of the classification methods used in this work are described: the probabilistic neural network, K-nearest neighbors, self-organizing Kohonen network, fuzzy C-means, and density clustering algorithm methods. It is shown that the algorithm based on a probabilistic neural network is the most efficient. It provides for the best classification reliability for 25 cloud types and allows the recognition of 11 cloud types with a probability greater than 0.7. As an example, the cloud classification results are given for the Tomsk region. The classifications were carried out using full-size satellite cloud images and different methods. Image saliency analysis plays an important role in various applications such as object detection, image compression, and image retrieval. Traditional methods for saliency detection ignore texture cues. In this paper, we propose a novel method that combines color and texture cues to robustly detect image saliency. Superpixel segmentation and the mean-shift algorithm are adopted to segment an original image into small regions. Then, based on the responses of a Gabor filter, color and texture features are extracted to produce color and texture sub-saliency maps. Finally, the color and texture sub-saliency maps are combined in a nonlinear manner to obtain the final saliency map for detecting salient objects in the image. There are many methods available for printer identification of questioned documents, however most of them need identical contents of the training and testing documents. There is no effective method yet when the contents of the training and testing documents are different. To overcome this obstacle a method based on synthetic texture analysis is proposed in this paper. The inner texture of printed characters is reconstructed in order to generate an artificial textural image similar to the real texture while independent of document content. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) methods are then used for feature extraction. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve a high recognition rate and provide a new platform for printer identification independent on the content of documents. In this paper, we explore an original way to compute texture features for color images in a vector process. Using a dedicated approach for color ordering, we produce a complete framework for color mathematical morphology adapted to human visual system characteristics. Then, morphological multiscale texture features are defined. To understand the texture feature behavior, we present the feature response to basic images variations. The present study proposes a computer-aided classification (CAC) system for three kidney classes, viz. normal, medical renal disease (MRD) and cyst using B-mode ultrasound images. Thirty-five B-mode kidney ultrasound images consisting of 11 normal images, 8 MRD images and 16 cyst images have been used. Regions of interest (ROIs) have been marked by the radiologist from the parenchyma region of the kidney in case of normal and MRD cases and from regions inside lesions for cyst cases. To evaluate the contribution of texture features extracted from de-speckled images for the classification task, original images have been pre-processed by eight de-speckling methods. Six categories of texture features are extracted. One-against-one multi-class support vector machine (SVM) classifier has been used for the present work. Based on overall classification accuracy (OCA), features from ROIs of original images are concatenated with the features from ROIs of pre-processed images. On the basis of OCA, few feature sets are considered for feature selection. Differential evolution feature selection (DEFS) has been used to select optimal features for the classification task. DEFS process is repeated 30 times to obtain 30 subsets. Run-length matrix features from ROIs of images pre-processed by Lee's sigma concatenated with that of enhanced Lee method have resulted in an average accuracy (in %) and standard deviation of 86.3 ± 1.6. The results obtained in the study indicate that the performance of the proposed CAC system is promising, and it can be used by the radiologists in routine clinical practice for the classification of renal diseases. Most existing classification studies use spectral information and those were adequate for cities or plains. This paper explores classification method suitable for the ALOS (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) in mountainous terrain. Mountainous terrain mapping using ALOS image faces numerous challenges. These include spectral confusion with other land cover features, topographic effects on spectral signatures (such as shadow). At first, topographic radiometric correction was carried out to remove the illumination effects of topography. In addition to spectral features, texture features were used to assist classification in this paper. And texture features extracted based on GLCM (Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix) were not only used for segmentation, but also used for building rules. The performance of the method was evaluated and compared with Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC). Results showed that the object-oriented method integrating spectral and texture features has achieved overall accuracy of 85.73% with a kappa coefficient of 0.824, which is 13.48% and 0.145 respectively higher than that got by MLC method. It indicated that texture features can significantly improve overall accuracy, kappa coefficient, and the classification precision of existing spectrum confusion features. In this paper, an approach based on combined color and texture features to classify raisins is presented. Least squares support vector machine (LSSVM), linear discriminant analysis, and soft independent modeling of class analogy were used to construct classification models. A total of 480 images were captured from four grades of raisin samples by a Basler 601 fc IEEE1394 digital camera, 200 images were randomly selected to create calibration model (training set), and remaining images were used to verify the model (prediction set). Color features and texture features were obtained from two color spaces: red-green-blue and hue-saturation-intensity using histogram method and gray level co-occurrence matrix method, respectively. Our results indicate that the best performance with about 95% of average correct answer rate is achieved by LSSVM using combined color and texture features from HSI color space. This result is significantly higher than the performance of solely used color or texture features. Current retrieval methods in geographic image databases use only pixel-by-pixel spectral information. Texture is an important property of geographical images that can improve retrieval effectiveness and efficiency. In this paper, we present a content-based retrieval approach that utilizes the texture features of geographical images. Various texture features are extracted using wavelet transforms. Based on the texture features, we design a hierarchical approach to cluster geographical images for effective and efficient retrieval, measuring distances between feature vectors in the feature space. Using wavelet-based multi-resolution decomposition, two different sets of texture features are formulated for clustering. For each feature set, different distance measurement techniques are designed and experimented for clustering images in a database. The only reliable and successful treatment of breast cancer is its detection through mammography at initial stage. Clusters of microcalcifications are important signs of breast cancer. Manual interpretation of mammographic images, in which the suspicious regions are indicated as areas of varying intensities, is not error free due to a number of reasons. These errors can be reduced by using computer-aided diagnosis systems that result in reduction of either false positives or true negatives. The purpose of the study in this paper is to develop a methodology for distinguishing malignant microcalcification clusters from benign microcalcification clusters. The proposed approach first enhances the region of interest by using morphological operations. Then, two types of features, cluster shape features and cluster texture features, are extracted. A Support Vector Machine is used for classification. A new set of shape features based on the recursive subsampling method is added to the feature set, which improves the classification accuracy of the system. It has been found that these features are capable of differentiating malignant and benign tissue regions. To investigate the performance of the proposed approach, mammogram images are taken from Digital Database for Screening Mammography database and an accuracy of 94.25% has been achieved.
