Mining user data and constructing web user profiles of older adults from the perspective of elderly services is conducive to understanding their behavioral habits, needs, and usage preferences on the web, which provides more targeted elderly care services. In this paper, IGA-SOMK + + , which is a novel clustering method for constructing web user profiles of older adults, is proposed based on the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) survey data, which include 6596 older adults aged greater than 60 years. The selected data aspects include basic information, work situation, health situation, living habits, and web use services. To describe the web user profiles of older adults, a hybrid method based on improved genetic algorithm (IGA) feature selection, self-organizing feature maps (SOM), and K-means + + is proposed. Data on older adults' web use behaviors are first processed, and IGA is used for feature selection based on the adaptive crossover and mutation probabilities. SOM is then used to determine the initial center vectors of K-means + + for further clustering, which is referred to as SOMK + + (SOM-K-means + +). The results of IGA-SOMK + + are compared with those of the state-of-the-art methods, including the K-means, mini batch K-means, Agnes, K-modes, FCM, K-means + + , SOMK + + , and IHPSO-KM. In addition, the significance and robustness of IGA-SOMK + + are analyzed. The experimental results show that the IGA feature selection reduces the influence of the redundant feature factors and improves the performance of the clustering algorithm. SOMK + + overcomes the sensitivity of K-means to initial cluster centers. Moreover, IGA-SOMK + + has the best clustering effect among the compared algorithms in terms of silhouette coefficient (SC), calinski-harabaz (CH) index, and davies-bouldin (DB) metrics. For example, it increases the SC from 0.280 to 0.629. Finally, by analyzing the results, the user group of older adults is segmented to perform the deep mining of CFPS data, which verifies the feasibility of the user profile model. This paper summarizes the basic situation of the current web access of older adults in China in terms of web use services, as well as the importance of the web in their lives and in the information channels. While the Internet has been profoundly changing how people participate in politics and is reshaping their political expressions in authoritarian countries, its exact effects remain ambiguous. This paper studies how Internet access and use influence public trust in local officials in authoritarian China. By using two-period panel survey data and combining difference-in-difference with propensity score matching, we find that, compared to Internet non-users, the Internet new-users show significantly lower political trust in local government officials. Further empirical evidence indicates that its causal mechanism primarily lies in the macro-structure of urban-rural heterogeneity and the micro-process of people's changing cognition and raised expectations. Our results substantially strengthen the argument that the diffusing power of the Internet is weakening the political legitimacy of authoritarian regimes like China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although the Internet has had a profound influence on China's economy and society, the empirical research pertaining to political consequences of the Internet is highly sparse. This paper investigates the potential relationship between Internet use and trust in government of Chinese netizens. We find robust evidence of a significant positive effect of Internet use on trust in government of netizens in China. The beneficial impact of Internet use on trust in government is found to be heterogeneous across genders and age groups. We also find that the source of information plays a role in explaining Chinese netizens' attitudes towards their governments. In addition, we find that the key mechanisms through which Internet use affects trust in government are the changes in netizens' appraisal of government performance, deference to government authority and internal efficacy. This paper provides a preliminary examination of the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs)—limited to mobile phone and internet use—in contemporary China. Based on fieldwork undertaken since 2003 in Guangzhou and Beijing, the paper focuses on the relationship between society and technology in the Chinese cultural context. An analysis of the data on ICT use in China shows how Chinese cultural traits and the speed of the ICT evolution in China have combined to bring about a unique cyber experience. This analysis may be helpful to other scholars who wish to compare the impact of ICTs in various cultures or who are interested in discovering how Mainland China went ‘cyber’. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we focus on the problem of community detection on Sina weibo, the most popular microblogging system in China. By characterizing the structure and content of microgroup (community) on Sina weibo in detail, we observe that different from ordinary social networks, the degree assortativity coefficients are negative on most microgroups. In addition, we find that users from the same microgroup tend to share some common attributes (e.g., followers, tags) and interests extracted from their published posts. Inspired by these new findings, we propose a united method to remodel the network for microgroup detection while maintaining the information of link structure and user content. Firstly, the link direction is concerned by assigning greater weight values to more surprising links, while the content similarity is measured by the Jaccard coefficient of common features and interest similarity based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation model. Then, both link direction and content similarity between two users are uniformly converted to the edge weight of a new remodeled network, which is undirected and weighted. Finally, multiple frequently used community detection algorithms that support weighted networks could be employed. Extensive experiments on real-world social networks show that both link structure and user content play almost equally important roles in microgroup detection on Sina weibo. Our method outperforms the traditional methods with average accuracy improvement up to 39 %, and the number of unrecognized users decreased by about 75 %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Subsequently, with the recent wave of industrialization, China has become the “factory” of the globalized world. The modernization of this country, however, is not confined to the provision of production at a low added value: It also entails technological appropriation and innovation. In particular, China represents the biggest world market for mobile phones and will soon dominate the Internet market. In this country, the total number of mobile and fixed-line subscribers exceeds 750 million, and the total number of Internet users is more than 162 million. The present study focuses on how, after a decade of mobile phone use, the inhabitants of Beijing evaluate the changes in the social and communicative sphere as a result of the introduction of the mobile phone. In this paper, we present some results of a quantitative research, specifically focused on mobile communication. Based on face-to-face questionnaires administered to a convenient sample of 487 respondents, this study addresses the following research questions: After a decade of mobile phone use, how do Chinese people perceive the importance of this device? To what extent do the adoption and use of mobile phones increase or decrease social connectivity in contemporary China? To what extent does the use of mobile phones in everyday life enhance or reduce the communications – do they make you feel closer to or more distant from other people? There had been an information epidemic during the COVID-19, which led to a lot of adverse network behavior among Internet users. From the perspective of cognition and emotion, this study focused on exploring the influence mechanism of pessimism on undergraduates' adverse network behavior, and introduced the mediating variable of negative affect and risk perception. In this study, a cross-sectional questionnaire was used to evaluate pessimism, negative affect, risk perception and adverse network behavior of undergraduates to explore the characteristics of network behaviors of undergraduates during the COVID-19. 600 undergraduates from three universities in a city in China were selected as participants, among whom 312 students are female and 288 students are male. The results are as follows: (1) Pessimism is positively correlated with adverse network behavior, and pessimism has a significant positive effect on adverse network behavior. (2) Pessimism is positively correlated with negative affect, and negative affect is positively correlated with adverse network behavior. The mediating effect analysis shows that the mediating effect of negative affect on the relationship between pessimistic personality and adverse network behavior has statistical significance. (3) Pessimism is positively correlated with risk perception and risk perception is positively correlated with adverse network behavior. The mediating effect analysis shows that the mediating effect of risk perception on the relationship between pessimistic personality and adverse network behavior has statistical significance. Despite the rapid growth of the Internet and the surge of public online discourse on policies in China,little is known about the tendencies of netizens' policy attitudes,and less attention has been paid to how policy attitudes form from a social psychological perspective. In this study,we explore how netizens have developed their negative attitudes towards established political policy through online interaction. Using grounded theory,the paper analyzes the netizens' online comments on a new policy of flexible working hours for civil servants in Ningbo. The concept of policy-precipitation is used to explain how the residue of outcome from previous policies,the impression of government departments and the image of civil service intensify the formation of netizens' policy cognition orientation. In addition,the concept of policy-cognitive inertia is put forward to explore the subjective factor which is a way of thinking inherent in leading to netizens' cognitive tendency of policies. Finally,a policy attitude formation process model and a policy attitude influence elements model are proposed to demonstrate the effects of policy-precipitation and policy-cognitive inertia on the formation of a certain policy attitude trend. This study investigates the audience of state-media broadcasts (SMBs) among Chinese Internet users—a missing link for understanding political communications in the high-choice media environment of modern countries. Using a "least likely case" strategy and a nationwide online survey, we created an audience profile of contemporary viewers among Chinese Internet users of Xinwen Lianbo (XWLB), the primary SMB program in China. We further examined the motivations driving viewers to watch the program, finding that external factors, such as media inequality, historical inertia, and family bundling, do not greatly alter people's watching behaviors. Instead, internal motivations, such as the pursuit of authentic information and psychological gratification, significantly increase the frequency with which viewers watch XWLB. In recent years, companies depend on the Internet for posting job advertisements and attracting qualified personnel. However, with the vast number of Internet users and the tremendous amount of information on the Internet, it is difficult to accurately evaluate the credibility of the information that candidates provide on the Internet. Therefore, we propose an approach to assess information credibility in terms of trustworthiness and authority to identify unreliable user profiles in online professional social networks. Our approach calculates the trustworthiness probabilities of user profile information using the Tree Augmented Naïve Bayes (TAN) classifier. It also measures the authority of individual users by applying the PageRank algorithm for analyzing the user interactions in the professional social networks. Finally, a group of LinkedIn users' profiles is selected for conducting experiments to validate the proposed approach. Experiments based on a real-world scenario show that our approach integrating the TAN Bayes and PageRank algorithm outperforms other existing approaches in classification accuracy. This essay reviews methodological advances in Internet studies in Chinese politics. First, automated text analysis reduces the time and cost of examining texts, and makes it possible to conduct a large-scale analysis of textual data like social media posts. Tools of automated text analysis, such as supervised classification, ReadMe, and topic models, have been applied in Internet studies in Chinese politics. Second, the new methods also bring new opportunities for developing rigorous research designs: (1) the Internet can serve as a platform for online field and survey experiments; (2) in some cases, in particular natural experiments, big data make it easier to conduct causal inference; (3) and using big data, there is potential to make inference with regard to a broader context. Online B2C retailers in China rely heavily on exclusive promotions for mobile shopping to attract new consumers and to promote their mobile shopping channels. However, it is unknown what factors may drive new consumers to continuously do mobile shopping without further promotional incentives. Motivated by the theoretical gap and practical salience of this question, in this study we propose a research model based on coping theory that highlights the critical role of active coping in handling mobile shopping procedures, and further identifies important dispositional traits of consumers and situation-specific factors that are either beneficial or harmful to their coping efforts. We recruited participants for a real mobile shopping task and collected pre-task and post-task survey data to test the research hypotheses. The results reveal important factors that are influential to consumers' continued use of mobile shopping through a coping mechanism, which contributes to deepening the understanding of user behavior in mobile shopping both from an academic perspective and in practice. Web 2.0 has brought a huge amount of user-generated, social media data that contains rich information about people's opinions and ideas towards various products, services, and ongoing social and political events. Nowadays, many companies start to look into and try to leverage this new type of data to understand their customers in order to make better business strategies and services. As a nation with rapid economic growth in recently years, China has become visible and started to play an important role in the global business and economy. Also, with the large number of Chinese Internet users, a considerable amount of options about Chinese business and market have been expressed in social media sites. Thus, it will be of interest to explore and understand those user-generated contents in Chinese. In this study, we develop an integrated framework to analyze user sentiments from Chinese social media sites by leveraging sentiment analysis techniques. Based on the framework, we conduct experiments on two popular Chinese Web forums, both related to business and marketing. By utilizing Elastic Net together with a rich body of feature representations, we achieve the highest F-measures of 84.4 and 86.7 % for the two data sets, respectively. The characteristics of Internet communication enable political, social, and cultural participation from the grassroots not only because the platforms provided by the Internet are open to all and inherently interactive but also because users are able to maintain their anonymity. Although, in theory, Internet communication is well-suited to the purposes of non-profit organization(s) (NPO(s)), in practice, Chinese NPOs do not to take full advantages of the Internet because of their bureaucratic and elitist approach. However, many Chinese who were once passive observers have been transformed into active participants as a result of Internet communication. This is significant because a civil society in China can only be achieved by the efforts of agents, not observers. Internet users have been actively learning the goals of civil society and participating in civil and political activities on the Internet, while Chinese NPOs rarely use the medium for advocacy.
