The discussion around gendering humanoid robots has gained more traction in the last few years. To lay the basis for a full comprehension of how robots' "gender" has been understood within the Human–Robot Interaction (HRI) community—i.e., how it has been manipulated, in which contexts, and which effects it has yielded on people's perceptions and interactions with robots—we performed a scoping review of the literature. We identified 553 papers relevant for our review retrieved from 5 different databases. The final sample of reviewed papers included 35 papers written between 2005 and 2021, which involved a total of 3902 participants. In this article, we thoroughly summarize these papers by reporting information about their objectives and assumptions on gender (i.e., definitions and reasons to manipulate gender), their manipulation of robots' "gender" (i.e., gender cues and manipulation checks), their experimental designs (e.g., demographics of participants, employed robots), and their results (i.e., main and interaction effects). The review reveals that robots' "gender" does not affect crucial constructs for the HRI, such as likability and acceptance, but rather bears its strongest effect on stereotyping. We leverage our different epistemological backgrounds in Social Robotics and Gender Studies to provide a comprehensive interdisciplinary perspective on the results of the review and suggest ways to move forward in the field of HRI. Gender segregation in fields of study represents an important explanation for gender inequalities in the labor market, such as the gender wage gap. Research shows that horizontal gender segregation in higher education persists for a variety of reasons, including women's greater communal goals and men's greater motivation to earn high incomes. Yet with the male breadwinner model in decline, a key question is whether women's motivation to earn high incomes might contribute to increasing women's participation in female-atypical fields of study. Using data from the German Student Survey over a period of 30 years, our findings show that the proportion of women enrolled in female-atypical fields of study increased from 1984 to 2015. Moreover, women's motivation to earn high incomes mediates the effect of time on enrollment in female-atypical fields of study. Their motivation to earn high incomes might thus be a factor contributing to the disruption of gender segregation in fields of study over time. Furthermore, contrary to expectations, the motivation to earn high incomes as a driving force for women to opt for gender-atypical fields of study is not stratified by social background. Although Wang Shifu's Xixiang ji (The Story of the Western Wing) and Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's Minna von Barnhelm were written against different lingual, cultural, and social backgrounds, a comparative reading of these two dramas casts new light upon subjects that have up to now received scant attention. Wang Shifu's solemn temple and Lessing's secular inn are similarly spaces for temporary accommodation and are witnesses of political penetration. Both depict young ladies and their maids who are adept at argument and are brave to resist authority. By contrast, the male protagonists are more susceptible to traditional norms. Political crises play vital roles in demonstrating gender differences, re-formulating the male protagonists' conceptions about honor and love, and most importantly in revealing the dishonest behavior of authority. Good outcome of schizophrenia has several meanings and most of these meanings carry both positive and negative undertones depending on perspective. Currently, a person's subjective sense that illness has been partly overcome and that life is meaningful has come to be viewed as the most valid signpost of a good outcome. A review of the literature shows that women have certain advantages over men in that their illness starts at a later age and that their symptoms respond more quickly and more completely to available treatments. These advantages serve women well at the outset of illness but benefits appear to dissipate over time. Gender differences in outcome thus vary depending on the age of the patient. They also vary with the social and cultural background of the study population. Neither sex, therefore, has a monopoly on good outcome. The hope is that studying gender differences will uncover critical elements of good outcome that lead to interventions that will benefit both women and men. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Medical schools are increasingly faced with a more diverse student population. Generally, ethnic minority students are reported to underperform compared with those from the ethnic majority. However, there are inconsistencies in findings in different types of examinations. Additionally, little is known about the performance of first-generation university students and about performance differences across ethnic minority groups. This study aimed to investigate underperformance across ethnic minority groups and by first-generation university students in different types of written tests and clinical skills examinations during pre-clinical training. A longitudinal prospective cohort study of progress on a 3-year Dutch Bachelor of Medicine course was conducted. Participants included 2432 students who entered the course over a consecutive 6-year period (2008-2013). Compared with Dutch students, the three non-Western ethnic minority groups (Turkish/Moroccan/African, Surinamese/Antillean and Asian) underperformed in the clinical problem solving tests, the language test and the OSCEs. Findings on the theoretical end-of-block tests and writing skills tests, and results for Western minority students were less consistent. Age, gender, pre-university grade point average and additional socio-demographic variables (including first-generation university student, first language, and medical doctor parent) could explain the ethnicity-related differences in theoretical examinations, but not in language, clinical and writing skills examinations. First-generation university students only underperformed in the language test. Apparently, underperformance differs both across ethnic subgroups and between different types of written and clinical examinations. Medical schools should ensure their assessment strategies create a level playing field for all students and explore reasons for underperformance in the clinical and writing skills examinations. Background: Investigating individuals' sequences of occupations and identifying suitable patterns is a complex task. Most research focuses on single time-points, single jobs and single transitions and only few longitudinal studies have investigated career paths over a long period of time. The aim of this study is to describe occupational career patterns (OCP) over a period of 30 years using longitudinal data from a representative sample of Swiss men and women. Based on a contextualist perspective of career development (Vondracek et al. Career development: a life-span developmental approach, 1986) potential antecedents such as characteristics of the family of origin and consequences of occupational career are examined. Methods: The database is the Zurich Longitudinal Study 'From School to Middle Adulthood' (ZLSE), which includes eleven surveys and covers the age span from 15 to 52 years. Our sample consists of 597 persons. The vocational activity was surveyed with the aid of a 'life graph' and the occupational career patterns were categorized with the help of the 'International Standard Classification of Occupations' (ISCO-08). In addition information about the family of origin, roles over the life course, highest degree of education, intelligence, satisfaction in different areas of life, income and working conditions were collected. Results: Patterns of 'upward mobility' and 'fluctuating patterns' (upward and downward movements) were prevalent in the men's OCPs. For women, the 'family pattern' with several interruptions and the 'stability pattern' were most frequently observed. Men's and women's OCP were only weakly related to family of origin, but more strongly to their overall life career (e.g. multiple role constellations, such as family and investment in work and education). The results also show that the individual career development matters in terms of later career success and well-being. Conclusions: The study confirms the overall assumption of more beneficial consequences (for both genders) for 'upward mobility', followed by 'fluctuating patterns', whereas changing patterns such as 'downward' and 'horizontal changes' show negative effects. This article examines how gender may account for productivity gaps across enterprises. First, using data from six countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, the article demonstrates that the extent and significance of any productivity gap by gender depends critically on the criteria used to classify an enterprise. Using a definition of 'female participation in ownership,' there are few differences in average performance measures. However, a 12% productivity gap emerges when a tighter definition, based on decision-making control, is used. Second, the article examines which entrepreneurial characteristics (education, management skills, experience and the motivation for being an entrepreneur) are most associated with higher productivity. The findings reveal that there are some gender gaps in the prevalence of these characteristics, but that these do not account for the overall gender productivity gap. Rather, while women benefit as much as men from education and management skills, there are non-linear impacts by gender in the benefits of having a family background in entrepreneurship; sons rather than daughters benefit from having a father that was an entrepreneur or from joining a family enterprise. Various research findings, mostly from Anglo-American countries, evidence the medical profession to be strongly familial and further suggest that a medical family background may be associated with study success in medical undergraduates. This study explored the familial aggregation of the medical profession among 1-year cohort samples of medical and psychology students in Austria. Whereas physicians only amount to about 0.4% of the total Austrian population, 45.8% of final-year medical students reported any and 25.6% a first-degree medical relative. Male students more likely had physicians in their family than female students and both sexes more likely had male than female medical relatives. Male final-year medical students with first-degree medical relatives were significantly younger than those without, thus indicating faster study progress in this group. Physicians also ran in the families of psychology students, as did psychologists and psychotherapists. Work–family conflicts are common, but their effects on health are not well known. The aim of this study was to examine the associations between work–family conflicts and self-rated health among middle-aged municipal employees. In addition, the effect of social background factors on the association between work–family conflicts and self-rated health were examined. The data were based on cross-sectional postal surveys, which were carried out in 2001 and 2002, among female and male employees of the city of Helsinki, Finland. The participants were aged 40–60, and the response rate for women was 69%, and for men 60%. In the final analysis, 3,443 women and 875 men were included. For men and woman alike, work-to-family and family-to-work conflicts were associated with poor self-rated health. The association remained after adjusting for sociodemographic and socioeconomic factors. This study shows that a better balance between family life and work outside the home would probably have a health promoting effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
