Background: Maternal healthcare service utilization is a pivotal indicator of a nation's progress in safeguarding the health and well-being of its women and children. In this context, women's empowerment emerges as a critical determinant influencing the utilization of maternal healthcare services. The study aims to assess the relationship between women's level of empowerment and utilization of maternal healthcare services among currently married women in India. Data and Methods: The study uses data from the fifth round of the National Family Health Survey conducted in 2019–2021 and analyzed 26,552 (15–49 aged) currently married women who had a live birth in the last 5 years preceding the survey. Additionally, univariate and bivariate analyses, multivariate logistic regression, and the SWPER index were used for the analysis. Results: Over the years, utilization of antenatal care, skilled birth attainment, and postnatal care has increased extensively in India. However, the study found that utilization of services was higher among empowered women, and it varies across the state with the extent of empowerment. State-level analysis shows that the extent of women empowerment was higher in Goa, followed by Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and lower in Jharkhand, followed by Tripura, so as the utilization of maternal and health care services. The extent of empowerment and utilization of services also varies by level of educational attainment, employment, and socio-economic status. Conclusion: There is a need for comprehensive strategies to enhance women's empowerment through education, employment, political participation, self-awareness, and reduction in gender-based violence and child marriages, which may improve awareness demand for better public health structure, and may ensure higher utilization of maternal healthcare services. Ultimately, these strategies may converse the higher maternal death and child mortality. Significance: What is already known about this subject? Existing literature in India mostly highlights a clear connection between women's autonomy and maternal healthcare services utilization. Women with higher autonomy, decision-making power, and mobility are more likely to use these services. However, in exploring the link between women's empowerment and maternal healthcare, some studies focus on education, employment, and media access among Indian mothers, sidelining broader empowerment dimensions. What this study adds? This study is likely the first to investigate the relationship between women's empowerment and the level of maternal healthcare service utilization in India. It covers key dimensions of women's empowerment, including Attitude to Violence, Social Independence, and Decision-making Power. Moreover, it is possibly the first Indian research paper to employ a survey-based women's empowerment index in this context. The Indian economy and food grain production are intricately tied to the spatial distribution and the amount of rainfall during the summer monsoon period (June to September). Numerous studies have delved into modeling methods for forecasting Indian summer monsoon rainfall. This paper utilizes monthly rainfall data spanning 72 years (1950–2021) to analyze, model, and predict the monsoon over Northwest India using Dynamic Linear Modeling (DLM). In view of this, the well-accepted dynamic linear model with significant components is selected from the parsimonious models of DLM based on Bayesian Information Criteria (BIC), significant tests, and statistical fit. The dynamic linear model comprises a significant linear time trend component, a deterministic trigonometric seasonal component, a deterministic cycle component, and a stochastic irregular component has been selected. The validation of the selected model passed through the normal and correlation diagnostics of model residuals. The analysis reveals a subtle decreasing trend in monsoon rainfall, showcasing consistent behaviour in deterministic seasonality, and highlighting the deterministic nature of cyclical component with a period of approximately 2.5 years, alongside irregular variations. Utilizing this model, future monsoon rainfall over Northwest India has been forecasted for the years 2022–2027, providing a 95% confidence interval. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The present paper aims to understand the fear of falling (FOF) and risk factors associated with FOF in community-dwelling individuals aged over 60 years in Pune, India. Subjects and methods: The study examined a random sample of 351 community-dwelling older adults. Data on demographic characteristics, health conditions, history of falls, and psychological factors were collected using a pre-tested, structured questionnaire. The Falls Efficacy Scale International (FES-I) was used to measure FOF. Univariate and bivariate logistic regression analyses were carried out to examine associations between various factors and FOF. Results: A high FES-I score was significantly associated with older age, females, unmarried status, education less than 6 years, living alone, unstable balance and gait, hypertension, arthritis, previous falls, self-reported loss of confidence, and depression. Adults older than 70 years of age (odds ratio, OR = 2.411), those with a history of falls (OR = 2.285), those reporting loss of confidence in the past 6 months (OR = 6.766), who had answered yes to the direct question of FOF (OR = 4.632), and had unstable balance (OR = 2.522) were also more likely to have higher FES-I values. Conclusion: A large number of older adults expressed concerns about falling and we also found several factors to be associated with developing FOF, supporting the need for screening. Thus, further research is needed in order to understand the relationship between severity of FOF and actual fall events for developing preventive measures which can be implemented before FOF becomes a problem. Iodine nutrition status amongst neonates can be assessed by estimating thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). According to WHO, if more than 3 % of the neonates have TSH levels of 5 mlU/l and more in a population, it indicates presence of iodine deficiency (ID). Iodine deficiency is an endemic health problem in Solan district, Himachal Pradesh (HP) state. ID leads to mental retardation, deaf mutism, squint, dwarfism, spastic diplegia, neurological defects and congenital anomalies. The aim is to determine iodine nutrition status of neonates of Solan district. In Solan district, six hospitals/community health centers providing obstetric services and conducting more than 100 deliveries per annum were identified and enlisted. Two hospitals were selected keeping in view of operational feasibility. A total of 683 umbilical cord blood samples of neonates were collected on filter paper and analyzed for TSH. It was found that 63.2 % of the neonates had TSH levels of more than 5 mlU/l indicating iodine deficiency in the Solan district. Iodine deficiency was a public health problem in Solan district, HP. This paper examines the association between alcohol use and HIV-related sexual risk behaviors among men who have sex with men (MSM). A cross-sectional bio-behavioral survey was conducted among 3,880 MSM, recruited using time-location cluster sampling from cruising sites in three Indian states. Nearly three-fifths of the participants reported alcohol use. Among frequent users (40 % of the sample), defined as those who consumed alcohol daily or at least once a week, 66 % were aged 25 years and above, 53 % self-identified as kothi (feminine/receptive), and 63 % consistently used condoms with male paying partners. Multivariate logistic regression demonstrated that frequent users were more likely to be aged 25 years and above, less likely to self-identify as kothi, and less likely to consistently use condoms with male paying (AOR = 0.7; 95 % CI 0.5-0.9) and male regular (AOR = 0.7; 95 % CI 0.6-0.9) partners. HIV prevention interventions for MSM need to provide tailored information on alcohol use-related sexual risk, especially for MSM in sex work and MSM with male regular partners. Objectives This study measures the prevalence of risk factors among pregnant women and young children aged 12-24 months in a rural community in West Bengal, India. Methods Community health workers (CHWs) enrolled women and children into this 2015 cross-sectional study. Pregnant women were evaluated for underweight, anemia, and abnormal blood pressure. Children were evaluated for underweight, abnormal head and upper arm circumferences, and low scores from the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ). Data were collected on smartphones and tablets or by paper. Results More than half of the 279 women (59.9%) had a risk factor during pregnancy: 48.7% were anemic, 35.1% had low blood pressure, and 7.5% were underweight. Among the 366 children, 59.3% had a risk factor, including 24.0% with low ASQ scores and 49.7% who had abnormal anthropometric measures. Conclusions for Practice Vulnerable populations, such as pregnant women and young children, needed a greater connection to doctors in this rural community. Intellectual disability in India is substantially under-reported, especially amongst females. This study quantifies the prevalence and gender bias in household reporting of intellectual disability by estimating the age-and-gender specific prevalence of the intellectually disabled by education, Socio-Demographic Index (SDI) score, place of residence, (rural/urban) and income of household head. We estimated prevalence (per 100,000) at 179 (95% CI: 173 to 185) for males and 120 (95% CI: 115 to 125) for females. Gender differences declined sharply with increased education, was higher for lower ages and low income and varied little by state development. Objectives In low-income settings, neonatal mortality rates (NMR) are higher among socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. Institutional deliveries have been shown to be protective against neonatal mortality. In Gujarat, India, the access of disadvantaged women to institutional deliveries has increased. However, the impact of increased institutional delivery on NMR has not been studied here. This paper examined if institutional childbirth is associated with lower NMR among disadvantaged women in Gujarat, India. Methods A community-based prospective cohort of pregnant women was followed in three districts in Gujarat, India (July 2013-November 2014). Two thousand nine hundred and nineteen live births to disadvantaged women (tribal or below poverty line) were included in the study. Data was analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. Results The overall NMR was 25 deaths per 1000 live births. Multivariable analysis showed that institutional childbirth was protective against neonatal mortality only among disadvantaged women with obstetric complications during delivery. Among mothers with obstetric complications during delivery, those who gave birth in a private or public facility had significantly lower odds of having a neonatal death than women delivering at home (AOR 0.07 95% CI 0.01-0.45 and AOR 0.03, 95% CI 0.00-0.33 respectively). Conclusions for Practice Our findings highlight the crucial role of institutional delivery to prevent neonatal deaths among those born to disadvantaged women with complications during delivery in this setting. Objectives Few Indian studies have examined the relationship between birth size and stunting in children. Studies on recovery from stunting in India are even fewer. This study, thus, investigates the relationship between birth size and stunting in Andhra Pradesh, India. This study further examines the factors associated with recovery from stunting using a longitudinal data. Methods We used data from the three waves of Young Lives Study (YLS) conducted in Andhra Pradesh in the years 2002, 2006-2007, and 2009 respectively. We used data from 1965 children in wave 1 to examine the association between birth size and stunting. For examining the factors associated with recovery from stunting between 1 and 5 years of age, and between 5 and 8 years, we use data from 582 and 670 children who were stunted at age 1 and age 5 respectively. We use multivariable logistic regression models to fulfil the objectives of the paper. Results The children who were of average- or large- size at birth were significantly less likely to be stunted than children who were of small size at birth (OR 0.61 and 0.47 respectively). Children of average/tall mothers were 0.41 times less likely to be stunted than children of shorter mothers. Severely stunted children were less likely than other stunted children to recover from stunting between 1 and 5 years of age, and between 5 and 8 years. Mother's height was statistically associated with recovery. Change in wealth status of the household was statistically associated with recovery between 1 and 5 years of age. In comparison, child immunization was associated with recovery between 5 and 8 years. Conclusions for Practice This study contributes to the understanding of the impact of birth size on childhood stunting, and to the extent of recovery from stunting in India. Background: Knowledge of the prevalence and attributable burden of headache disorders in India is sparse, with only two recent population-based studies from South and East India. These produced conflicting results. A study in North India is needed. We report the methodology of such a study using, and validating, a Hindi translation of the Headache-Attributed Restriction, Disability, Social Handicap, and Impaired Participation (HARDSHIP) questionnaire developed by Lifting The Burden (LTB). Almost half of the Indian population speak Hindi or one of its dialects. Methods: The study adopted LTB's standardized protocol for population-based studies in a cross-sectional survey using multistage random sampling conducted in urban Delhi and a surrounding rural area. Trained interviewers visited households unannounced, randomly selected one adult member from each and applied the Hindi version of HARDSHIP in face-to-face interviews. The most bothersome headache reported by participants was classified algorithmically into headache on ≥ 15 days/month (H15 +), migraine (including definite and probable) or tension-type headache (including definite and probable). These diagnoses were mutually exclusive. All participants diagnosed with H15 + and a 10% subsample of all others were additionally assessed by headache specialists and classified as above. We estimated the sensitivity and specificity of HARDSHIP diagnoses by comparison with the specialists' diagnoses. Results: From 3,040 eligible households, 2,066 participants were interviewed. The participating proportions were 98.3% in rural areas but 52.9% in urban Delhi. In the validation subsample of 291 participants (149 rural, 142 urban), 61 did not report any headache (seven of those assessed by HARDSHIP, eight by headache specialists and 46 by both) [kappa = 0.83; 95% CI: 0.74-0.91]. In the remaining 230 participants who reported headache in the preceding year, sensitivity, specificity and kappa with (95% CI) were 0.73 (0.65-0.79), 0.80 (0.67-0.90) and 0.43 (0.34-0.58) for migraine; 0.71 (0.56-0.83), 0.80 (0.730.85) and 0.43 (0.37-0.62) for TTH and 0.75 (0.47-0.94), 0.93 (0.89-0.96) and 0.46 (0.34-0.58) for H15 + respectively. Conclusion: This study validates the Hindi version of HARDSHIP, finding its performance similar to those of other versions. This paper examines the trends in economic inequality in infant mortality across urban-rural residence in India over last 14 years. We analysed data from the three successive rounds of the National Family Health Survey conducted in India during 1992-1993, 1998-1999, and 2005-2006. Asset-based household wealth index was used as the economic indicator for the study. Concentration index and pooled logistic regression analysis were applied to measure the extent of economic inequality in infant mortality in urban and rural India. Infant mortality rate differs considerably by urban-rural residence: infant mortality in rural India being substantially higher than that in urban India. The findings suggest that economic inequalities are higher in urban than in rural India in each of the three survey rounds. Pooled logistic regression results suggest that, in urban areas, infant mortality has declined by 22 % in poorest and 43 % in richest. In comparison, the decline is 29 and 32 % respectively in rural India. Economic inequality in infant mortality has widened more in urban than in rural India in the last two decades. India's traditional kinship behavior have undergone certain fundamental changes due to recent development and functioning of Indian society. Of all, the most dominant change is in the form of co-residence of children with their parents in old age. Without familial support, falling or no income and poor health, today, older adults are the most vulnerable population sub-group in the total population. Therefore, by using the India Human Development Survey-II, 2011-12 data we study the relevant association of living arrangement on health status of the older adults. Our results indicate that older adults living alone have significant and strong association with adverse health conditions such as Cataract, Hypertension, and Heart Disease. On the backdrop of health variations of older adults, it is understood that among other socio-economic conditions, living arrangement have serious implications on the health status of the older adults. Thus, we strongly support the notion that older adults with proper family care and support are more likely to be in a better health position as compared to those deprived of it. This paper examines the impact of three components of an HIV prevention program (mid-media, interpersonal communication, and project-run clinics) on consistent condom use by long distance truckers with paid and non-paid female partners in India. Data from 2,723 long distance truckers were analyzed using the propensity score matching approach. Based on utilization of services, the following categories of intervention exposure were derived: no exposure, exposure only to mid-media, exposure only to mid-media and interpersonal communication, exposure only to mid-media and project-run clinics, and exposure to all three intervention components. Compared to those who were not exposed to any intervention, exposure to mid-media alone increased consistent condom use with paid female partners by about ten percent. Exposure to mid-media and visits to project-run clinics increased consistent condom use with non-paid female partners by 26 %. These findings suggest that mid-media events and clinics were the most effective package of services to increase consistent condom use among the long distance truckers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The paper aims to study whether (1) abusive husbands demonstrate higher sexually transmitted infection (STI) infection prevalence compared with non-abusive husbands and (2) women's risk is due to their exposure to IPV as the predictor of adverse reproductive health outcomes including use of contraceptives and treatment seeking pattern. Subject and methods: A multi-centric study with analytical cross-sectional design was applied, covering 18 states in India including 14,507 women respondents. Multi-stage sampling and probability proportion to size was done. Results: STI has a significant association with women who have survived physical and sexual assaults. Interpersonal violence increases the risk of STI, less use of contraceptives and low treatment-seeking behavior. The reason for not seeking treatment in women with STIs was found to be stigma, embarrassment and lack of knowledge. Conclusion: Inspite of the Domestic Violence Act in India, the public health system in India is not accessible to the women subjected to violence for the treatment required. Similar research results would enable the creation of an environment where violence would be acknowledged and referral networks between healthcare providers and legal/government organizations would provide further redressal where needed. This paper examines the associations between male migration and mobility with HIV among married couples in India. Cross-sectional analyses of a nationally representative household survey conducted across all 29 states of India from 2005 to 2006 via the National Family Health Survey-3 (NFHS-3) included a subsample of 27,771 married couples who were tested for HIV as a part of their participation. Both bi-variate and multi-variate analyses were conducted. About 0.5% of the total married couples in the current study included an HIV-infected partner; 0.11% were HIV concordant and 0.38% were HIV serodiscordant couples. Adjusted logistic regression analyses demonstrated that HIV infection in couples (seroconcordant or serodiscordant) was significantly more likely among those couples where the man was migrant but not mobile and those couples where the man was migrant as well as mobile, relative to those couples where the man was neither migrant nor mobile. Male migration increases the risk for HIV among married couples in India, largely in the form of serodiscordance in which men are HIV infected. These findings document the need for not only primary prevention efforts to reduce HIV acquisition among migrant male workers, particularly more mobile migrants, but also efforts are needed to reduce subsequent transmission to their wives. Indian population is ageing at a higher pace coupled with the increase in life expectancy, and the prevalence of cognitive impairment, dementia, and comorbidities increase dramatically with age. Such cognitive and physical changes are intimately linked with declines in everyday functioning that include loss of decision-making skills. The present study explored the relationship between socioeconomic and health status of older adults and their role in household decision making. The study used data from the "Building a Knowledge Base of Population Ageing in India" (BKPAI) survey conducted in 2011 (n = 9181). Descriptive statistics along with multivariate negative binomial and binary logistic regression analyses were conducted. A proportion of 29.7% of older adults had no or partial involvement in household decision making and 26.5% of older adults reported that they had witnessed a decline in their role as decision-maker. The involvement of older adults in household decision making was 1.51 times lower among those who did not contribute money in household expenditure (incidence rate tatio (IRR):1.51; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.24, 1.84) than those who contributed. Respondents who had low cognitive ability (IRR: 1.22; 95% CI: 1.09, 1.37) or had more than one disability (IRR: 1.27; 95%CI: 1.09, 1.47) were significantly 1.22 and 1.27 times less likely to have involvement in household decision making, respecctively. Older adults who reported low self-rated health (adjusted odds rati (aOR): 1.4; 95% CI: 1.21, 1.61), low general health (aOR: 2.85; 95% CI: 2.46, 3.31), low subjective wellbeing (aOR: 2.29; 95% CI: 1.99, 2.64) and low IADL (aOR: 1.49; 95% CI: 1.31, 1.69) were significantly more likely to report a decline in the role as a decision maker compared to their healthy counterparts. Along with the poor socioeconomic characteristics, the negative effects of cognitive and health markers of ageing further diminish the role of older adults in household decision making. Further research in the field of familial role and importance of older adults in different family settings is required in tackling a wide range of issues related to the wellbeing of the aged population. Background: Non-communicable diseases are the most serious public health threat of the twenty-first century. Diabetes is becoming a major public health issue worldwide and is associated with a slew of potentially fatal comorbidities. Aim: Based on the available literature, our systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to understand the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in the Indian tribal community. Materials and methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, studies reporting the prevalence of diabetes mellitus among tribes in India were retrieved by independent investigators who electronically conducted a literature search by exploiting searches conducted in PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar. We estimated pooled prevalence with 95% confidence intervals using the R Studio statistical tool in a random-effects model. This review includes twenty-three studies from 2000 to 2020 conducted in all five regions of India. Results: The pooled prevalence rate across the twenty-three studies of 35,985 participants was 6% (95% confidence intervals [CI] = 5–7%). High heterogeneity was observed in prevalence estimates. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus in different subgroups ranged from 4% (95% CI = 0.00, 0.05%) to 10% (95% CI = 0.00, 0.19) (North, 5%; South, 5%; East, 10%; West, 4%; and Central, 7%). Conclusion: As a result, concentrated efforts aimed at filling awareness gaps as well as operational research or other data gaps would aid in the prevention and control of diabetes, as well as filling these gaps in tribal areas. The living arrangement is an essential social support mechanism affecting older adults' health and well-being. As the Indian family structure changes over time, India's older population needs detailed investigation for its well-being due to living arrangements. This study investigates the association between the change in living arrangements after reaching age 60 years with subjective well-being and psychological health among older adults in India. We used the survey data "Building Knowledge Base on Population Ageing" in India conducted in 2011. The effective sample size for the study was 9231 older adults. Descriptive and bivariate analysis was done to present sample distribution and unadjusted estimates, respectively. Ordered logistic regression analysis was performed to understand the association between the living arrangements of the older adults and their psychological health. The outcome variables were ordered as 0 "best", 1 "good", and 2 "worst". The results showed that older adults with a change in living arrangement after turning 60 years had a higher prevalence of poor psychological health (27.5%) and low subjective well-being (36%). It was found that older adults with change in living arrangement after turning old had 84% and 54% higher likelihood to report worst psychological health [AOR: 1.84; CI: 1.48–2.27] and worst subjective well-being [AOR: 1.54; CI: 1.22–1.93] compared to older adults who did not change their living arrangement after turning old. A change in old-age living arrangements is associated with older adults' psychological health and subjective well-being in India. Purpose: Food insecurity and multimoribidity (i.e., ≥ 2 chronic conditions) may be linked bidirectionally, but there are no studies on this topic from LMICs. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to examine the association between food insecurity and physical multimorbidity in a large representative sample of older adults from six LMICs. Methods: Cross-sectional, community-based data on adults aged ≥ 50 years from the World Health Organization's Study on Global AGEing and Adult Health (SAGE) conducted in China, Ghana, India, Mexico, Russia, and South Africa were analyzed. A total of 11 chronic physical conditions were assessed. Past 12 month food insecurity was assessed with two questions on frequency of eating less and hunger due to lack of food. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the associations. Results: Data on 34,129 adults aged ≥ 50 years [mean (SD) age 62.4 (16.0) years; age range 50–114 years; 47.9% males] were analyzed. After adjustment for potential confounders, in the overall sample, compared to being food secure, moderate and severe food insecurity were associated with 1.29 (95% CI 1.06–1.56) and 1.56 (95% CI 1.13–2.16) times higher odds for multimorbidity, respectively Conclusion: Food insecurity was associated with greater odds for multimorbidity in older adults from LMICs. Addressing food insecurity in the general population may reduce risk for multimorbidity, while screening for food insecurity and addressing it among those with multimorbidity may lead to better clinical outcomes, pending future longitudinal research [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Much of the research on intimate partner violence (IPV) documents the negative impacts of violence on women, which are substantial. Less attention has been given to perceptions of the marital relationship given these experiences of violence. However, evidence suggests that many women affected by IPV within marriage remain in their relationships, particularly in contexts such as India, where divorce remains highly stigmatized. Understanding and supporting marital quality may need greater prioritization to support women who remain in relationships affected by violence. This study examines the association between IPV and marital quality among young married couples in rural India. We interviewed 1084 women and 1084 men at two time points (baseline, 18 months) in a western state in India and used multilevel mixed effects models to test the association between IPV and marital quality. We found that women's experience of physical and sexual IPV was associated with poor marital quality at 18 months. Women's experience of sexual IPV was also negatively associated with men's self-reported marital quality at 18 months. Among men, spouse's marital quality was positively associated with their own rating of marital quality. We also examined the reciprocal relationship between IPV and marital quality and found that women's report of poor marital quality was associated with their future experience of physical IPV, sexual IPV, and emotional IPV. Taken together, these findings suggest that IPV interventions need to target marital quality to be effective. Background: Construction workers are 3–4 times more likely than other workers to die from accidents at work—however, in the developing world, the risks associated with construction work may be 6 times greater. India does not publish occupational injury statistics, and so little is known about construction workers injured. We aimed to use Indian police records to describe the epidemiology of construction site injuries in Delhi and to thus generate knowledge that may help to control the burden of injuries to construction workers in India and in other developing countries. Methods: This was a cross-sectional analysis of accident records maintained by the Delhi Police. We included all construction workers reported to have been killed or injured in construction site accidents in Delhi during the period 2016–2018. We used multivariable logistic regression models to investigate associations between injury severity (fatal vs. non-fatal injury) and exposure variables whilst adjusting for a priori risk factors. We also estimated the number of Delhi construction workers in total and by trade to generate estimates of worker injury rates per 100,000 workers per year. Results: There were 929 construction site accidents within the study period, in which 1,217 workers and children were reported to have sustained injuries: 356 (29%) were fatal and 861 (71%) were non-fatal. One-eighth of injuries were sustained by females. Most occurred in the Rainy season; most were sustained during the construction of buildings. The most frequent causes were the collapse of an old building, the collapse of a new building under construction, and electric shocks. Electricians were more likely than unskilled workers to suffer a fatal injury (adjOR 2.5; 95% CI: 0.87–6.97), and there were more electrical shocks than electricians injured. The odds of a fatal injury were statistically significantly lower in Central districts than in the less developed, peripheral districts. Conclusions: Construction site injuries are an unintended health impact of urbanisation. Women undertake manual work alongside men on construction sites in Delhi, and many suffer injuries as a consequence: an eighth of the injuries were sustained by females. Children accompanying their working parents on construction sites are also at risk. Two main hazards to construction workers in Delhi were building collapses and electrical shocks. Electricians were over twice as likely as unskilled workers to suffer a fatal injury, and electrical work would appear to be undertaken by a multitude of occupations. As the global urban population increases over the coming decades, so too will the burden of injuries to construction workers. The introduction and enforcement of occupational safety, health, and working conditions laws in India and in other rapidly developing countries will be necessary to help to control this injury burden to construction workers. Aim: The high incidence of acute respiratory infection (ARI)-related morbidity and mortality is a major public health concern in developing countries. This study aimed to quantify regional inequalities and the degree of association between childhood ARI and background factors. Methods: This study utilised information of 238 945 children aged below five years extracted from the Fourth Indian National Family Health Survey conducted in 2015–16. Inter-state and regional inequality in the prevalence of ARI were quantified and presented using a map of India and forest plot. The association of background characteristics and ARI was quantified using bivariate and multivariable binary logistic regression models. Results: Significant inequalities in the prevalence of childhood ARI were observed across the six regions of India. Considering the children from north-east region as a reference, those from north, central and east regions were 0.68, 1.02 and 0.57 times more likely to suffer from ARI. Comorbidity, sex, age and nutritional status of children were significantly associated with the prevalence of ARI. Conclusions: ARI remains a significant public health concern among Indian children. The results of this study showed that significant regional disparities in the prevalence of ARI exist in India. HIV stigma takes a multidimensional toll on a mother's ability to care for herself and subsequently may impact her ability to care for her child, particularly when mother and child are seroconcordant. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted to examine the association between maternal HIV stigma and child CD4 count in rural India. We assessed 108 mother–child dyads and found that a one-unit increase in community stigma fear decreased child CD4 count by 352 cells (95% CI = − 603, − 102), highlighting the need to develop a better understanding of the consequences of HIV-related stigma on the compounded burden of care in households where mother and child both live with HIV. Continuous and indiscriminate use of synthetic acaricides contribute to the development and establishment of acaricide-resistant tick populations. Monitoring of acaricide resistance in field ticks and use of suitable practices are essential for managing tick populations, infesting animals. In the present study, adult immersion test (AIT) was used for evaluation of resistance against commercially available synthetic pyrethroids (deltamethrin and cypermethrin) in Rhipicephalus microplus ticks collected from various villages of Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh, India. All the eight isolates of R. microplus were found resistant with deltamethrin and their resistance factors (RFs) were between 3.91 to 57.92, whereas, seven isolates were found resistant with cypermethrin and their resistance factor ranges from 0.56 to 9.98. Lethal concentrations (LC50 and LC95), confidence intervals (CI) and slope(s) were estimated by probit analysis and the highest and lowest level of resistance appeared in Sagra Bekchera and Silpara isolates of R. microplus for both deltamethrin and cypermethrin. It was observed that of the two compounds used for tick management, the resistance to deltamethrin was comparatively higher than cypermethrin. Data generated on pyrethroid resistance status of ticks in this region will provide new insights in acaricidal resistance scenario particularly from remote areas of this region and will help in formulating suitable tick management strategy. Summary: 'Indigenous peoples' across the globe suffer a disproportionate burden of mental illness. However, this burden is not fully explored in India despite having the second largest absolute concentration of indigenous peoples in the world. We did a secondary analysis of data from a cross-sectional survey in indigenous populations from the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in South India. Symptoms suggestive of psychological distress were reported by 39.9% participants. Being alone, tobacco use, hypertension, hypertension in family member, and violent conflict in household were independently associated with psychological distress. More epidemiological studies need to be conducted to map the burden and elaborate the relationships between mental health problems and socio-cultural factors in indigenous populations in India. Aims: Healthcare utilization is a major challenge for low- and middle-income countries, especially for the publicly funded facilities. The study has tried to explore the women's opinion behind the non-utilization of public healthcare facilities in India. Subjects and methods: This was a cross-sectional study using nationally representative samples of 351,625 women of reproductive age (15–49 years) from the 29 States and seven Union Territories. Indian National Family Health Surveys NFHS-4 (2015–2016) was the data source. The respondents were asked why the members of their households do not utilize public healthcare facilities when members of their households are sick. They have options to respond either 'yes' or 'no'. Five reasons for non-utilization of public healthcare were asked: (i) 'there is no nearby facility'; (ii) 'facility timing is not convenient'; (iii) 'health personnel are often absent'; (iv) 'waiting time is too long'; and (v) 'poor quality of care'. Results: The majority of the women in India (88%) said that their family members did not use public healthcare facilities. The reasons behind this were 'no nearby facilities' (42.4%), 'inconvenient facility timing' (29.6%), 'poor quality of care' (52.3%), 'health personnel often absent' (16.8%) and 'long waiting time' (39.9%). Conclusions: importantly, during the last 10 years, the utilization of public health care facilities has dropped significantly, which should be taken seriously as the Indian Parliament has been placing emphasis on equity. With the availability of satellite-based precipitation products, it is pertinent to develop methods to use these data products to design hydraulic structures. The satellite precipitation products play a vital role in ungauged locations or when information is required on a catchment scale. Before such applications, the accuracy and uncertainty associated with the products have to be investigated. In this study, we develop a framework that includes bias correction for the development of robust IDF curves. The framework is applied to a small region in the southeastern part of India, and the IDF curves were evaluated using the gauge data at nine locations. This study compares Intensity Duration Frequency (IDF) curves using the recent precipitation product Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM-IMERG V6) with ground-based gauge data. Results show that the spatial correlation between the satellite IDF and the gauge-based IDF improves significantly after bias correction, and the value is as high as 0.75 for 2–10 year return period. The bias between the satellite IDF and gauge IDF is low in the north part of the study region and is high in the southeastern part, prone to extreme rainfall. Further, a significant percentage of the satellite-based IDFs (with and without bias correction) lie inside the confidence interval of the gauge-based data. Aim: The association between visual impairment and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has not been investigated to date. Thus, we assessed this association among older adults from six low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) (China, India, Ghana, Mexico, Russia, and South Africa) using nationally representative datasets. Methods: Cross-sectional, community-based data from the WHO Study on global AGEing and adult health (SAGE) were analyzed. Visual acuity was measured using the tumbling ElogMAR chart, and vision impairment (at distance and near) was defined as visual acuity worse than 6/18 (0.48 logMAR) in the better-seeing eye. The definition of MCI was based on the National Institute on Aging-Alzheimer's Association criteria. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted. Results: Data on 32,715 individuals aged ≥ 50 years [mean (SD) age 62.1 (15.6) years; 51.2% females] were analyzed. Compared to those without far or near vision impairment, those with near vision impairment but not far vision impairment (OR = 1.33; 95% CI = 1.16–1.52), and those with both far and near vision impairment (OR = 1.70; 95% CI = 1.27–2.29) had significantly higher odds for MCI. Only having far vision impairment was not significantly associated with MCI. Conclusions: Visual impairment is associated with increased odds for MCI among older adults in LMICs with the exception of far vision impairment only. Future longitudinal and intervention studies should examine causality and whether improvements in visual acuity, or early intervention, can reduce risk for MCI and ultimately, dementia. Injury from motor vehicle accidents remains a leading cause of death in India with increasing number of fatalities. Timely delivery of lifesaving interventions is critical for survival and in restoring physical functioning. As a part of the Australia India Trauma Systems Collaboration, the Trauma Reception and Resuscitation (TRR©)-computerized decision support system was implemented in a Level 1 Trauma Centre in India in order to determine whether this system would reduce the time in performing lifesaving interventions and improve vital sign data capture and documentation. This prospective cohort study at the Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Center, All India Institute of Medical Science, New Delhi, recruited a total of 106 participants into two groups: TRR© (76) and controls (30). During the first 30 min of resuscitation, the TRR© group recorded greater sets of vital signs in compared to the controls for medical records. More importantly, the real-time documentation of the vital signs for the TRR© group ensured accuracy for medical records. For lifesaving interventions, oxygen was administered in the TRR© group only if SpO2 < 93%, whereas oxygen was administered as standard of care in the controls. There was no statistical difference in the mean times to endotracheal intubation, intercostal catheter insertion or performance of emergency chest x-ray between the control and TRR© groups. Importantly however, these 3 comparable interventions were performed consistently within a smaller timeframe for patients receiving care with TRR© decision prompts. There was a greater variability in the time taken to perform lifesaving interventions in the control group in comparison to the clinicians assisted with computerized decision prompts. This preliminary study was not powered to measure difference in mortality and patient recruitment was limited to 8 am–5 pm when trained staff could attend to operating the TRR© system. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence of adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) in India, the third largest HIV epidemic in the world. We identified peer reviewed literature published between 2007 and 2017 to extract data on ART adherence. We estimated pooled prevalence of adherence to ART using a random-effects model. Thirty-two eligible studies (n = 11,543) were included in the meta-analysis. Studies were mostly clustered in the southern and western Indian states. Overall, 77% (95% Confidence Interval 73–82; I2 = 96.80%) of patients had optimum adherence to ART. Women had higher prevalence of optimum adherence compared to men. Depression or anxiety were significant risk factors in seven of the fifteen studies reporting determinants of nonadherence. Studies should be performed to explore the reasons for gender gap in ART adherence and HIV program in India should prioritize mental health issues among HIV patients to improve ART adherence. Objectives mHealth interventions for MNCH have been shown to improve uptake of antenatal and neonatal services in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, little systematic analysis is available about their impact on infant health outcomes, such as reducing low birth weight or malnutrition among children under the age of five. The objective of this study is to determine if an age- and stage-based mobile phone voice messaging initiative for women, during pregnancy and up to 1 year after delivery, can reduce low birth weight and child malnutrition and improve women's infant care knowledge and practices. Methods We conducted a pseudo-randomized controlled trial among pregnant women from urban slums and low-income areas in Mumbai, India. Pregnant women, 18 years and older, speaking Hindi or Marathi were enrolled and assigned to receive mMitra messages (intervention group N = 1516) or not (Control group N = 500). Women in the intervention group received mMitra voice messages two times per week throughout their pregnancy and until their infant turned 1 year of age. Infant's birth weight, anthropometric data at 1 year of age, and status of immunization were obtained from Maternal Child Health (MCH) cards to assess impact on primary infant health outcomes. Women's infant health care practices and knowledge were assessed through interviews administered immediately after women enrolled in the study (Time 1), after they delivered their babies (Time 2), and after their babies turned 1 year old (Time 3). 15 infant care practices self-reported by women (Time 3) and knowledge on ten infant care topics (Time 2) were also compared between intervention and control arms. Results We observed a trend for increased odds of a baby being born at or above the ideal birth weight of 2.5 kg in the intervention group compared to controls (odds ratio (OR) 1.334, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.983–1.839, p = 0.064). The intervention group performed significantly better on two infant care practice indicators: giving the infant supplementary feeding at 6 months of age (OR 1.4, 95% CI 1.08–1.82, p = 0.009) and fully immunizing the infant as prescribed under the Government of India's child immunization program (OR 1.531, 95% CI 1.141–2.055, p = 0.005). Women in the intervention group had increased odds of knowing that the baby should be given solid food by 6 months (OR 1.89, 95% CI 1.371–2.605, p < 0.01), that the baby needs to be given vaccines (OR 1.567, 95% CI 1.047–2.345, p = 0.028), and that the ideal birth weight is > 2.5 kg (OR 2.279, 95% CI 1.617–3.213, p < 0.01). Conclusions for Practice This study provides robust evidence that tailored mobile voice messages can significantly improve infant care practices and maternal knowledge that can positively impact infant child health. Furthermore, this is the first prospective study of a voice-based mHealth intervention to demonstrate a positive impact on infant birth weight, a health outcome of public health importance in many LMICs. Aim: Family planning has long been recognised as an effective public health intervention to reduce fertility and unwanted births. This study examines the effect of household wealth and gender composition of children on contraceptive use and unmet need for family planning. Subject and methods: Our study is based on primary data collected from 460 respondents in the rural areas of the Rae Bareli district of Uttar Pradesh between September 2016 and February 2017. The representative sample comprised 460 currently married women who had at least one living child below 10 years of age. Current use of contraception and an unmet need for family planning were the outcomes variables. Descriptive statistics, a concentration curve and index for inequality, and multivariate techniques were used to examine the association between predictor and outcome variables. Results: Our study showed low prevalence and substantial socio-economic differentials in contraceptive use. An unmet need for family planning was concentrated among the poor and the use of contraception was found to be more frequent among affluent women. Household wealth and gender composition of children were significantly associated with contraceptive use and unmet need for family planning. Conclusion: There are substantial differentials in contraceptive use and unmet need for family planning in rural Uttar Pradesh. In addition to promoting family planning, there is a need to create an atmosphere to reduce son preference, increase the acceptance of girl babies and remove economic inequalities. Inequalities between native-born and foreign-born individuals in screening rates for a variety of conditions have been well-documented in literature on immigrant health. A preponderance of this research focuses on the Latin American case and on cancer-specific screening. This study seeks to expand knowledge of such preventative-health screening differences by analyzing screening rates for blood sugar, blood pressure, and serum cholesterol among nine groups overall and (for immigrants) at various stages of US residency. Using nationally representative data from the National Health Interview Survey, we find that immigrants from eight geographic regions receive preventative care at lower rates than US-born Whites and that preventative screening is generally higher after 15 years than during the first 4 years of residency in the United States. Importantly, our data also show that screening patterns and trends vary based on region of origin and outcome. To assess the prevalence and correlates of perinatal depression, 200 HIV-positive pregnant/post-partum women receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) were interviewed at eight government ART centers in four states across India. 52.5% (105) participants had depressive symptomology (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale score > 13) while 23% of the participants reported thoughts of self-harm; there was no difference between pregnant and postpartum participants. Objectives To examine the effects of oral maternal vitamin B12 supplementation during pregnancy and early lactation on cognitive development in children. Method We studied 218 children born to mothers enrolled in a placebo-controlled, randomized trial of vitamin B12 supplementation during pregnancy through 6 weeks post-partum. Cognitive functions were assessed at 30 months using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development- 3rd edition (BSID III). The association of maternal sociodemographic characteristics, maternal biochemical status during pregnancy, birth weight and home environment with each sub-domain of BSID-III was examined using linear regression analysis. Separate multiple linear regression analyses for each of the BSID-III sub-domains with maternal trimester specific nutritional biomarker status was conducted. Results Children of mothers who received oral vitamin B12 supplementation had significantly higher scores on expressive language compared to children of mothers who received placebo (β = 0.14, P = 0.03). Children of mothers with elevated serum total homocysteine (tHcy) in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy had significantly lower scores on expressive language (β = − 0.18, P = 0.03 and β = − 0.19, P = 0.02, respectively) and gross motor domains (β = − 0.23, P = 0.008 and β = − 0.30, P = 0.001, respectively) of BSID-III adjusted for treatment arm and multiple confounders, compared with children whose mothers did not have elevated tHcy. Conclusions for practice Maternal B12 supplementation during pregnancy was associated with higher expressive language scores in children at 30 months. Elevated maternal tHcy levels during pregnancy had negative associations with expressive language and gross motor domains of BSID-III. Background: Sleep is an important predictor of health and quality of life. This study examined the association between sleep problems and sleep duration with self-rated poor health and grip strength among respondents aged 50 years and above in India and China.Methods: The data for this study were derived from the first wave of WHO’s Study on Global Aging and Adult Health (SAGE), a nationally representative panel survey conducted in six LMICs. Grip strength and poor self-rated health were the main outcome variables, while sleep problems and sleep duration were the main predictors. Multivariate logistic regression models and ordinary least squares regression models were used to understand the association between sleep problems and sleep duration with poor self-rated health and grip strength.Results: Sleep problems and sleep duration were strongly and significantly associated with poor self-rated health and grip strength in India and China. Compared to older adults with no sleep problems, the odds ratio for poor self-rated health among older adults with sleep problems was 4.86 (95% CI = 4.12, 5.73, p < 0.01) and 5.06 (95% CI = 3.93, 6.51, p < 0.01) higher for India and China, respectively. The likelihood of reporting poor health was higher among older adults who got ≤ 6 or 10+ h of sleep in both India and China. A negative and significant association was found between longer sleep duration and grip strength only in China (β = −1.19, 95% CI = −1.78, −0.60, p < 0.01).Conclusion: We observed a significant association between sleep problems and sleep duration with poor self-rated health and grip strength. Aim: This article aimed to study the burden, impact and coping mechanisms associated with out-of-pocket (OOP) health expenditure in rural and urban areas in India.Methods: National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) data on ‘Health and Morbidity’ gathered in 2004 and 2014 were employed to measure the catastrophic burden, impoverishment impact and various coping strategies associated with out-of-pocket health in India.Results: Results revealed that over the study period, considerable rural-urban differentials existed in the economic burden and impact of out-of-pocket health expenditure. As a coping strategy, borrowing and other distress sources were used in higher proportions by the rural population than their urban counterparts. Overall, our results demonstrated an alarming situation regarding health care financing in India.Conclusion: Substantial investment in public health is needed, especially in rural areas as it is here that people are facing the real brunt of catastrophic OOP health expenditures in the form of impoverishment with more dependence on distress sources including borrowing and sale of assets as coping mechanisms. Aim: This study examines the geographical variation in prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and its correlates in India.Subjects and methods: The study has used data from recent NSSO (71st Round, 2014) survey. Simple bivariate analyses are used to calculate the prevalence rate of NCDs per thousand persons. Binary logistics regression is applied to examine the effects of demographic and socioeconomic variables on the prevalence of NCDs.Results: The overall prevalence of NCDs, reported by the respondent, is 55/1,000 people in India, and it varies across all geographical regions. The southern region shows highest prevalence of NCDs (107/1,000) and the north east region is the lowest prevalence of NCDs (11/1,000). The prevalence of NCDs varies with the socio-demographic characteristics of respondents, where the prevalence of NCDs is much higher among people above 60+ years (i.e. 419/1,000 for the southern region and also for other regions) than corresponding categories. The prevalence of NCDs is high among urban residency, female, ever married women, other ethnicities, other religions, and affluent groups excluding level of education. Similarly, the logistic regression result shows that age, sex, place of residence, ethnicity, religion, and income status of respondent have statistically significant impact on NCDs and is more susceptible to having NCDs across the geographical regions of the country.Conclusion: The study highlights the need to develop proper surveillance and monitoring programmes to focus on highly affected geographical regions to arrest the growing burden of NCDs. Background: Past investigations in different nations have demonstrated that food insecurity may lead to frailty among older adults; however, there is no evidence concerning these associations in India. Our investigation tries to fill this gap utilizing WAVE I of WHO SAGE 2007 information.Objectives: To examine the independent effect of food insecurity on frailty. To assess differences in frailty and other correlates between food secure and insecure older individuals.Methods: The Fried phenotype approach was used to create a frailty index using the presence of five indicators among older adults: exhaustion, weight loss, physical activity, weakness, and walking speed. Respondents were called robust, pre-frail, or frail based on the presence of zero, one, or two or more indicators from the five indicators, respectively. Individuals were classified as food insecure based on their responses to two five-point Likert scale-type questions: if they had less food than required because there was not enough food and if they had been hungry but did not eat because they could not afford food in more than 1 or 2 months in the last 12 months. Bivariate analysis was performed to determine the differences in all the correlates and frailty among older adults with food security and insecurity. Step-by-step logistic regression analysis was performed to estimate the effect of food insecurity on frailty.Results: Bivariate results show that from a total of 6650 adults aged 50 years or older, 16.05% are food insecure, and of them, 19% are frail. In addition, frailty is significantly associated with food insecurity (p < 0.001). These findings are further corroborated by multivariate analysis results showing that food insecure older adults have higher odds of being frail compared to their counterparts (OR = 1.31, 95% CI 1.10; 1.65, P < 0.001) in the adjusted model for all the correlates. Education and wealth are also among major factors aggravating frailty among older adults.Conclusion: Based on our results, we conclude that, after controlling for correlates, food insecurity is associated with frailty, which further prevents older adults from accessing nutritious food and causes them to lose their independence. Thus, the government needs to introduce focused sustenance programs for the elderly population who do not have regular access to food and are frail to prevent early disability and mortality. Purpose: Two of the crucial components of health care service utilisation are the type of health care services received (government, private, others) and the place visited (same village, another village, another district/town, a metro city, abroad, etc.). The association between health care facilities and gender is important for understanding the disparities between males and females. Thus, the primary objective of this study was to reassess the gender differences in the type and place of health care utilisation.Methods: Data from the second round of the India Human Development Survey (2011-2012) were used for this study. Analysis was done using both bi- and multivariate techniques (multinomial logistic regression).Results: Results indicate an improvement in the female health care-seeking behaviour. We found that females have a higher tendency to visit private health care centres, whereas a higher percentage of males used government health care services for the treatment of both long- and short-term morbidities. Males and females reported visiting health care centres within the village, in another village, in another district/town and in a metro area/abroad for treatment approximately to the same extent.Conclusion: The analysis of the male and female treatment-seeking behaviour revealed a clear picture of proliferating gender neutrality. The increase in the health care-seeking behaviour of women can be considered an upshot of improved female education and increased awareness among males regarding female empowerment. Bhutanese-Nepali refugees are one of the largest refugee groups to be resettled in the U.S. in the past decade. Cervical cancer is a leading cause of cancer disparity in this population, yet screening rates are suboptimal. Nepali-speaking interviewers administered a community health needs questionnaire to a convenience sample of Bhutanese-Nepali refugees in a Midwestern city between July to October of 2015. Descriptive statistics were used to describe socio-demographic characteristics, Pap smear beliefs, post-migration living difficulties, and screening status. Differences in Pap test uptake between groups were tested using t test and Chi square statistics. Of the 97 female participants, 44.3% reported ever having had a Pap smear. Screening rates were lowest among women who did not know English at all. Most women had positive perceptions of Pap smears (80%) and 44.4% had received a Pap test recommendation from their healthcare provider, family, or friends. Pap testing was significantly higher among those who had positive perceptions (58.3 vs. 11.1% for women of negative perception, p = 0.01) and those who had received a recommendation (87.5 vs. 18.6% for women who had no recommendations, p < 0.001). Significant predictors of having a Pap smear were having a healthcare provider/family/friends recommendation (OR 65.3, 95% CI 11.4-373.3) and greater number of post-migration living difficulties (OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.02-1.37). The results of this study have important implications for the development of cervical cancer prevention programs targeting Bhutanese-Nepali refugees. Aim: This study aims to examine the association between the Haemophilus influenza type B (Hib) vaccination and child anthropometric outcomes in India. Subject and methods: The study used prospective cohort data from the Young Lives Study (YLS) conducted in Andhra Pradesh, India. The participants were 1,824 children (aged 54-76 months). Stunting and underweight were used to measure the child anthropometric outcomes. The study used the multivariate logistic regression model to examine the association between Hib vaccination and childhood stunting and underweight. Results: The result shows that stunting was lower among children who were vaccinated against Hib as compared to those who were not vaccinated (30.8% versus 39.5%). Similarly, the prevalence of underweight was also lower among the vaccinated children than the non-vaccinated ones (39.1% versus 48.0%). The results of the multivariate logistic regression analysis also suggest that children vaccinated against Hib were significantly less likely to be stunted (AOR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.61-0.95) and underweight (AOR: 0.79, 95% CI: 0.64-0.98) than children who were not vaccinated against Hib, after controlling potentially confounding variables. Conclusions: The study concludes that vaccination against Hib, in addition to being a major intervention for reducing childhood infectious diseases and mortality, may be considered as a potential tool for reducing the burden of undernutrition in India. New York City's South Asian children and pregnant women have a disproportionate burden of elevated blood lead levels. This study is the first to investigate blood lead levels and risk factors for lead exposures among South Asian New Yorkers. A survey and a finger-stick blood lead test using a portable analyzer were administered to 230 South Asian adults and children. Blood lead levels of 5 µg/dL or higher were found in 20 % of the adults and 15 % of the children, as compared to 5 % of adults and 2.5 % of children citywide. Factors associated with elevated blood lead levels were recent repair work at home, not speaking English, Bangladeshi or Indian ethnicity, and occupational risk factors. Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at increased risk for HIV infection in India, particularly those who engage in transactional sex with other men (i.e., male sex workers; MSW). Despite the need, HIV prevention efforts for Indian MSW are lacking. As in other settings, MSW in India increasingly rely on the use of mobile phones for sex work solicitation. Integrating mobile phone technology into an HIV prevention intervention for Indian MSW may mitigate some of the challenges associated with face-to face approaches, such as implementation, lack of anonymity, and time consumption, while at the same time proving to be both feasible and useful. This is a pilot randomized controlled trial to examine participant acceptability, feasibility of study procedures, and preliminary efficacy for reducing sexual risk for HIV. MSW (N = 100) were equally randomized to: (1) a behavioral HIV prevention intervention integrating in-person and mobile phone delivered HIV risk reduction counseling, and daily, personalized text or voice messages as motivating 'cognitive restructuring' cues for reducing condomless anal sex (CAS); or (2) a standard of care (SOC) comparison condition. Both groups received HIV counseling and testing at baseline and 6-months, and completed ACASI-based, behavioral and psychosocial assessments at baseline, 3, and 6 months. Mixed-effects regression procedures specifying a Poisson distribution and log link with a random intercept and slope for month of follow-up was estimated to assess the intervention effect on the primary outcomes: (1) CAS acts with male clients who paid them for sex, and (2) CAS acts with male non-paying sexual partners-both outcomes assessed over the past month. The intervention was both feasible (98% retention at 6-months) and acceptable (>96% of all intervention sessions attended); all intervention participants rated the intervention as 'acceptable' or 'very acceptable.' A reduction in the reported number of CAS acts with male clients who paid them for sex in the past month was seen in both study conditions. MSW in the intervention condition reported a faster rate of decline in the number of CAS acts with male clients in the past month from the baseline to both the 3-month ( B = −1.20; 95% CI −1.68, −0.73; p < 0.0001) and 6-month ( B = −2.44; 95% CI −3.35, −1.53; p < 0.00001) assessment visits compared to the SOC condition. Post-hoc contrasts indicated that, at 3 months, participants in the intervention condition reported 1.43 (SD = 0.29) CAS acts with male clients in the past month compared to 4.85 (SD = 0.87) in the control condition (p = 0.0003). Furthermore, at 6 months, the intervention condition participants reported 0.24 (SD = 0.09) CAS acts with male clients in the past month compared to 2.79 (SD = 0.79) in the control condition (p < 0.0001). Findings are encouraging and provide evidence of feasibility and acceptability, and demonstrate initial efficacy (for reducing sexual risk for HIV) of a behavioral HIV prevention intervention for Indian MSW that combines daily, personalized text or voice messages with mobile phone-delivered sexual risk reduction counseling and skills building. We analyzed 45 original articles from Indian Pediatrics for appropriateness of the statistical methods. Appropriate statistical tests (93%), no use of obscure test and use of exact P value were the positive findings observed. Sample size was calculated in 24% and confidence interval in 13%. Objectives The social positioning (i.e. social status and autonomy) of women in the household facilitates women's access to and decision-making power related to family planning (FP). Women's access to spending money, which may be an indicator of greater social positioning in the household, may also be greater among women who engage in income generating activities for their families, regardless of women's status in the household. However, in both scenarios, access to money may independently afford greater opportunity to obtain family planning services among women. This study seeks to assess whether access to money is associated with FP outcomes independently of women's social positioning in their households. Methods Using survey data from married couples in rural Maharashtra, India (n = 855), crude and adjusted regression was used to assess women's access to their own spending money in relation to past 3 month use of condoms and other forms of contraceptives (pills, injectables, intrauterine device). Results Access to money (59 %) was associated with condom and other contraceptive use (AORs ranged 1.5-1.8). These findings remained significant after adjusting for women's FP decision-making power in the household and mobility to seek FP services. Conclusion While preliminary, findings suggest that access to money may increase women's ability to obtain FP methods, even in contexts where social norms to support women's power in FP decision-making may not be readily adopted. We investigated long-term outcomes in children with diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders based on Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS score). Information about outcomes such as speech, friendships and activities of daily living (ADLs) was collected through telephone-based interviews. Gilliam Autism Rating Scale-2 and Vineland Social Maturity Scale were used to assess level of functioning at follow-up. Parents of 80 [67 males, mean age 12 (3) years] children participated in the interview, 23 attended follow-up assessment. Sixty-four (80 %) were verbal, 34 (42.5 %) had need-based speech, 20 (25 %) had friends and 37 (46 %) had achieved age-appropriate ADLs. Median total follow-up period was 10 years. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of non-violent, gender-based forms of maltreatment of women by husbands and in-laws [i.e., gender-based household maltreatment (GBHM)] during pregnancy and postpartum; to clarify the role of GBHM in compromising infant health, and whether this role extends beyond that previously observed for intimate partner violence (IPV). Methods: Cross-sectional, quantitative data were collected from women (ages 15-35) seeking immunizations for their infants <6 months of age (N = 1061) in urban health centers in Mumbai, India. Logistic regression models were constructed to assess associations between maternal abuse (perinatal IPV, in-law violence and GBHM) and recent infant morbidity (diarrhea, respiratory distress, fever, colic and vomiting). Results: More than one in four women (28.4 %) reported IPV during their recent pregnancy and/or during the postpartum period, 2.6 % reported perinatal violence from in-laws, and 49.0 % reported one or more forms of perinatal GBHM. In adjusted regression models that included all forms of family violence and maltreatment, perinatal GBHM remained significantly associated with infant morbidity (AORs 1.4-1.9); perinatal IPV and in-law violence ceased to predict infant morbidity in models including GBHM. Conclusions: Findings indicate that non-violent expressions of gender inequity (e.g., nutritional deprivation, deprivation of sleep, blocking access to health care during pregnancy) are more strongly associated with poor infant health than physical or sexual violence from husbands or in-laws in urban India. These results strongly suggest the need to expand the conception of gender inequities beyond IPV to include non-violent forms of gendered mistreatment in considering their impact on infant health.
