In this paper, the surface and lower tropospheric temperature trends in Greece and their relationship to the atmospheric circulation for the period 1955-2013 were examined, updating the study of Feidas et al. (Theor Appl Climatol 79:185-208, 2004) for data observed during the 12-year period 2002-2013. The trend analysis is based on a combination of three statistical tests. The trends are now examined for all the seasonal time series, new atmospheric circulation indices were added in the analysis, and maps with the spatial distribution of correlation between air temperature and atmospheric circulation were constructed and analysed. The series updated to 2013 for 18 stations reveal a clearer positive trend than that found for the period 1955-2001 on both the annual and the seasonal timescales. The warming signal detected only in summer in the study of Feidas et al. (Theor Appl Climatol 79:185-208, 2004) has now intensified and spread in other seasons. This warming appears to be mainly caused by the very high temperatures in the last decade (after 2004) of the record. At the national scale, there is now a match between surface temperature trends in Greece and Northern Hemisphere (NH) but only for summer, spring and annual time series, which are the only time series presenting a statistically significant warming trend in Greece. Satellite-induced lower tropospheric temperatures now show a statistically significant tropospheric temperature warming trend for the period 1979-2013, for both areas (Greece and NH). Lower tropospheric and surface air temperatures for the same period (1979-2013) show a very good agreement, with differences only in winter and summer for Greece. The influence of atmospheric circulation on the temperature variability in Greece was also examined using two more circulation indices: the Eastern Mediterranean Pattern Index (EMPI) and the North-Sea Caspian Pattern Index (NCPI). EMPI and especially NCPI explain better now the temperature variance in Greece, principally in winter. The present paper investigates the impact of canyon geometry on the temperature regime and nocturnal heat island development in the very dense urban area of Athens, Greece. Detailed measurements of air temperature have been carried out within three deep urban canyons of different aspect ratios ( H/ W = 3, 2.1 and 1.7) during the night period of the summer and autumn of 2007. An analysis was carried out to investigate the relative impact of the canyon geometry, the undisturbed wind velocity, ambient temperature, and cloud cover on the development of a nocturnal heat island. A clear increase of the median, maximum and minimum values of the cooling rates has been observed for decreasing aspect ratios. Under low ambient temperatures, high wind speeds correspond to a substantial rise of the cooling rate in the urban canyons mainly because of the increased convective losses. On the contrary, cooling rates decrease substantially under high-undisturbed wind speeds and ambient temperatures because of the important convective gains. The impact of cloud cover was found to be important as cloudy skies cause a substantial decrease of the cooling rates in the urban canyons. Comparisons were performed between the temperature data collected in the three studied urban canyons and temperatures recorded in an urban as well as a suburban open space station. A cost effective and easily applied methodological approach for the identification of the main factors involved in flood generation mechanisms and the development of rainfall threshold for incorporation in flood early warning systems at regional scale is proposed. The methodology was tested at the Pinios upstream flood-prone area in Greece. High frequency monitoring rainfall and water level/discharge time-series were investigated statistically. Based on the results, the study area is impacted by "long-rain floods" triggered by several days long and low-intensity precipitation events in the mountainous areas, that saturate the catchment and cause high flow conditions. Time lag between the peaks of rainfall and water level was 17–25 h. The relationship between cumulative rainfall Rsum on the mountainous areas and maximum water level MaxWL of the river at the particular river site can be expressed as: MaxWL = 1.55ln(Rsum) − 3.70 and the rainfall threshold estimated for the mountainous stations can be expressed as: Rsum = 20.4*D0.3, where D is the duration of the event. The effect of antecedent moisture conditions prior each event was limited to the decrease of the time lag between rainfall and water level response. The limitations of the specific methodological approach are related to the uncertainties that arise due to the other variables contributing to the complex flood generating mechanisms not considered (e.g., the effect of snowmelt and air temperature, soil characteristics, the contribution of tributaries, or the inadequate maintenance of river network that may cause debris accumulation and river bank failure). This study presents the results of high-resolution dynamical downscaling of 5 km on maximum (TX) and minimum (TN) air temperature and precipitation, for Greece, with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The ERA-Interim (ERA-I) reanalysis dataset is used for initial and boundary conditions. The model results (WRF_5) are evaluated against available ground observations for the period 1980–2004 through the calculation of mean climatology, statistical metrics, and distributions of extreme events on daily, monthly and seasonal scales. WRF_5 model captures very well the geographical distribution of TX and TN of the study area, and illustrates finely the seasonal differences. Statistical results for TX (TN) indicate a cold (warm) bias of − 0.6 °C (1 °C) regarding WRF_5 and − 3 °C (0.5 °C) for ERA-I. The efficiency metrics for temperatures showed a highly improved performance of the model compared to reanalysis for all temporal scales investigated. The observed mean annual cycle and inter-annual variability of precipitation are also well represented by model simulation. Although WRF_5 overestimates rainfall during most of the year, the seasonal pattern of WRF_5 presented similar correlation coefficients for all stations with a range of 0.6–0.85, showing a good model ability to simulate the precipitation in Greece. The results reveal the capability of the configured WRF high resolution model to reproduce the main climatological variables of the study area, outperforming the coarse resolution ERA-Interim in a region that is dominated by highly variable topographic characteristics. The present work investigates the increase of confirmed cases of West Nile virus and the relationship between weather-related patterns and the geographical expansion of West Nile virus in Greece, with a special focus on West Attica, Central Greece, a semi-arid, ecologically fragile Mediterranean area. Using data from the European Environment Agency, European Drought Observatory of Joint Research Centre, the pairwise relationship between surface air temperature anomalies, precipitation anomalies, soil moisture index anomalies, and the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation anomalies (fAPAR) was evaluated during summer time of 2018, a particularly intense virus outbreak. The empirical results of this study indicate that total precipitation during 2018 was extremely high, nearly 500% above the average. These conditions contributed to the increase of soil moisture index anomaly and fAPAR, creating an ideal microenvironment (wet soils and green pastures) for mosquito breeding. This phenomenon was directly associated with a drastic outbreak of West Nile virus cases in the area, compared with earlier years. Our results indicate how unusually high values of summer precipitation may have contributed (both through direct and indirect ecological channels) to the rapid spread of the West Nile virus in West Attica, causing a significant number of confirmed cases and fatalities. This study presents a methodology for modeling and mapping the seasonal and annual air temperature and precipitation climate normals over Greece using several topographical and geographical parameters. Data series of air temperature and precipitation from 84 weather stations distributed evenly over Greece are used along with a set of topographical and geographical parameters extracted with Geographic Information System methods from a digital elevation model (DEM). Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) obtained from MODIS Aqua satellite data is also used as a geographical parameter. First, the relation of the two climate elements to the topographical and geographical parameters was investigated based on the Pearson's correlation coefficient to identify the parameters that mostly affect the spatial variability of air temperature and precipitation over Greece. Then a backward stepwise multiple regression was applied to add topographical and geographical parameters as independent variables into a regression equation and develop linear estimation models for both climate parameters. These models are subjected to residual correction using different local interpolation methods, in an attempt to refine the estimated values. The validity of these models is checked through cross-validation error statistics against an independent test subset of station data. The topographical and geographical parameters used as independent variables in the multiple regression models are mostly those found to be strongly correlated with both climatic variables. Models perform best for annual and spring temperatures and effectively for winter and autumn temperatures. Summer temperature spatial variability is rather poorly simulated by the multiple regression model. On the contrary, best performance is obtained for summer and autumn precipitation while the multiple regression model is not able to simulate effectively the spatial distribution of spring precipitation. Results revealed also a relatively weaker model performance for precipitation than that for air temperature probably due to the highly variable nature of precipitation compared to the relatively low spatial variability of air temperature field. This study presents an analysis of the relationship between winter large-scale circulation and surface meteorological conditions over Greece for the period 1979-2009. The adopted methodology involves the application of an automated atmospheric circulation classification scheme based on the self-organizing map approach. The impact of each of the identified relevant 19 winter atmospheric circulation patterns on local meteorological condition is examined at seven sites by calculating the corresponding differences from the mean meteorological conditions. The conditional transition probabilities of circulation patterns indicate the existence of increased 1-day persistence, especially for the anticyclonic and the pattern related to Genoa depressions. Positive temperature anomalies are observed for the cyclonic patterns, while negative anomalies are attributed to the effect of anticyclonic circulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
