Planning and scheduling of operating rooms (ORs) is important for hospitals to improve efficiency and achieve high quality of service. Due to significant uncertainty in surgery durations, scheduling of ORs can be very challenging. In this paper, surgical case scheduling problem with uncertain duration of surgeries in multi resource environment is investigated. We present a two-stage stochastic mixed-integer programming model, named SOS, with the objective of total ORs idle time and overtime. Also, in this paper a two-step approach is proposed for solving the model based on the L-shaped algorithm. Proposing the model in a multi resources environment with considering real-life limitations in academic hospitals and developing an approach for solving this stochastic model efficiently form the main contributions of this paper. The model is evaluated through several numerical experiments based on real data from Hasheminejad Kidney Center (HKC) in Iran. The solutions of SOS are compared with the deterministic solutions in several real instances. Numerical results show that SOS enjoys a better performance in 97% of the cases. Furthermore, the results of comparing with actual schedules applied in HKC reveal a notable reduction of OR idle time and over time which illustrate the efficiency of the proposed model in practice. In this paper, an integrated workflow based on recent geoscience data is presented for assessing the reservoir characterization and structural interpretation of the Burgan formation, a highly productive formation in the Abadan plain, SW Iran. Utilizing newly acquired high-resolution SEM images, we evaluated the pore size, pore distribution, and pore aspect ratio of Burgan formation. The watershed segmentation algorithm is also capable of detecting throats and closed pores. The porosity fractions from SEM images are used for calibration of the porosity log at several well locations in order to perform petrophysical modeling. Due to the complexity of facies behavior in the study area, we utilized supervised Bayesian classifiers using P-wave velocity, density, and facies log data in order to incorporate spatial dependence into the model. The confusing matrix and machine learning metrics including Accuracy (97.01%), Precision (93.88%), F1 Score (94.16%), and False Positive Rate (2.52%), indicate that the classifier has been properly trained at well locations. A reasonable match is evident between the modeled petrophysical parameters and the true (core) porosity and water saturation at the location of the test well. Furthermore, we have demonstrated the validity of assumptions concerning the dominance of extensional structure in the Abadan plain by using interpreted seismic data. The presented workflow can be used to optimize drilling operations and reduce risks in similar geological settings in the studied formation. Ground vibration is one of the most significant issues resulting from the blasting operation. This paper presents two empirical relationships based on gene expression programming (GEP) and teaching–learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithms for predicting blast-induced peak particle velocity (PPV) at Galali Iron Mine, western Iran. For this purpose, data on 13 parameters were collected from 34 blasting blocks in the studied mine before having the data processed using statistical methods. Eventually, four parameters, including burden, mean hole depth, charge per delay ratio, and distance to monitoring station, were identified as the most effective factors. PPV was also considered as the output parameter of the model. Then, exploring the best curve-fitting relationships between input and output data, an empirical relationship was developed by applying the GEP algorithm. Afterward, the TLBO algorithm was utilized to optimize the developed relationship. A comparative analysis based on statistical parameters such as correlation coefficient (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) indicated the superior accuracy of TLBO algorithm compared to the GEP method. Finally, a blasting pattern was formulated to attenuate the PPV at the center of the Galali Village from 10 mm/s to 1 mm/s while increasing the mine production from 5500 tons to 17,500 tons per blasting block. Earthquakes have caused considerable economic damage and loss of lives. The ability to determine earthquake-prone areas has utmost importance to crisis management. Given the gravity of the issue, this research proposes to incorporate geographic information system-based fuzzy-analytic network process (FAHP) and fuzzy-analytic hierarchy process (FANP) methods to determine earthquake-prone areas in the southwest of Iran. In addition, this paper is to utilize the feature selection algorithm (FSA) to select the most relevant parameters influencing earthquakes and prepare seismic activity maps. The final maps obtained using the relevant data were compared with maps obtained using the entire data. For this aim, a fuzzy membership function was initially employed to generate a fuzzy map for different layers, after which the analytic network process and analytic hierarchy process methods were utilized for assigning proper weights to each layer and eventually procuring earthquake maps. The input information for the mentioned methods consisted of landscape, slope, elevation, lithology, land use, soil, road, and fault maps. According to the FSA approach, the most relevant parameters include distance to fault (DTF), lithology, slope, and landscape. The results of FANP and FAHP methods utilizing the receiver-operating characteristic curve showed that the FANP method has a higher accuracy for determining earthquake-prone areas. As the areas located in the northern parts of the region are more at risk. In addition, Finally, the results of earthquake maps obtained using solely the relevant data from FSA were compared with the maps obtained using the entire data. The results of FSA showed that the Best first and Greedy-Stepwise models have high accuracy (R = 0.99) and the most important data for determining earthquake-prone areas using these models are DTF, lithology, slope, aspect. This paper develops a new method of onset detection for the Tar, a traditional Iranian musical instrument. The proposed method is based on both types of pitch and energy features. Therefore, it can be utilized to detect either soft or hard onsets. Through this combination, we obtained a more precise separation between two adjacent notes. This ability is especially useful to detect the reaz, repeatedly played notes with the same frequency and short durations. Grouping of earthquakes into distinct clusters is applied to improve mechanism identification and pattern recognition for active seismicity in a region. One of the important issues concerning earthquake data clustering is determining the optimum number of clusters (ONC) at the early stages of algorithms. In this paper a robust method based on K-nearest neighbor search (KNNS) is presented to achieve three goals: improving output accuracy, improving output stability, and adding the ability to weight the features used in ONC determination. By introducing a new formula, the proposed method utilizes the error calculated for clustered data based on the similarity between the members in each cluster. An outlier attenuation algorithm is also used to improve the performance of the method. Both the Krzanowski–Lai Index (KLI) and the silhouette coefficient (SC), as two conventional methods, were used to compare the results and evaluate the performance. Experiments on synthetic data sets verified the effectiveness of the method, with considerable differences found. The clustering of a real earthquake catalogue related to the seismogenic province of Zagros in Persia using our proposed methodology suggests using 13-cluster analysis for clustering based on the spatiotemporal features with the same weights, and seven-cluster analysis for a case where priority is given only to the spatial parameters of the epicenters. Under the same circumstances, the KLI and SC methods suggest three and 18 clusters, respectively. In this paper, a new version of the multi-objective particle swarm optimizer named the Diversity-enhanced fuzzy multi-objective particle swarm optimization (f-MOPSO/Div) algorithm is proposed. This algorithm is an improved version of our recently proposed f-MOPSO. In the proposed algorithm, a new characteristic of the particles in the objective space, which we named the "extremity," is also evaluated, along with the Pareto dominance, to appoint proper guides for the particles in the search space. Three improvements are applied to the f-MOPSO to mitigate its shortcomings, generating f-MOPSO/Div: (1) selecting the global best solution based on the diversity of the extreme solutions, (2) impeding the particles to be trapped in the local optima using a mutation scheme based on the dynamic probability, and (3) removing the pre-optimization process. To validate f-MOPSO/Div, it was compared with some other popular multi-objective algorithms on 14 standard low- and high-dimensional test problem suites. After the comparative results indicated the outperformance of the proposal, the f-MOPSO/Div was applied to solve an optimal conjunctive water use management problem, in a semi-arid study area in west-central Iran, over a 13-year long-term planning period with two main objectives: (1) maximizing the aquifer sustainability as an environmental goal, and (2) maximizing the crop yields as a socio-economic goal. As the results suggest, the cumulative groundwater level drawdown is considerably decreased over the whole planning period to make the aquifer sustainable, while the water productivity is held at a desirable level, demonstrating the superiority of the f-MOPSO/Div when also applied to solve a large-scale real-world optimization problem. This paper is aimed to develop and verify a novel hybrid intelligent model, which is indeed a new version of GMDH algorithm and named generalized structure of GMDH (GS-GMDH) to solve engineering problems. The proposed GS-GMDH model was validated its capability of predicting blast-induced ground vibration, a very important safety issues in the mining industry. For this regard, a data set with a totally of 96 samples was gathered from a blasting site in Shur River Dam region, Iran. Among them, 67 and 29 samples were used for constructing and testing the model, respectively. To check the accuracy and robustness of the proposed algorithm, the values of the performance evaluation measures, i.e., R2, variance accounted for (VAF), mean absolute error, root mean square error, scatter index, and Nash–Sutcliffe model efficiency (EN–S), were used. The results showed the efficiency of the GS-GMDH algorithm in the prediction of the blast-induced ground vibration. It was also confirmed that the proposed algorithm can be applied effectively to solving/predicting the engineering problems and it has also the potential to be generalized to other fields. This paper considers a real case problem of supply chain network design inspired from a wheat distribution network in Iran. It generates a network with capacity acquisition and fleet management. The problem first is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming model. Then, a logic-based Benders decomposition algorithm is appropriately developed as the solution methodology. In the presented algorithm, the problem is decomposed into two models of master and subproblem. The master problem is improved by means of the preprocessing and valid inequalities. Moreover, three Benders cuts, one optimality and two feasibility cuts, are developed for the algorithm. The general and relative performance of the model and algorithm is experimentally evaluated. The wheat distribution system of Iran is considered here as the case study of this research. The model is developed based on Iran's wheat distribution system. All the results show that the algorithm significantly outperforms the mathematical model of the case study. This paper presents a robust device for automated screening of pediatric heart diseases based on our unique processing method in murmur characterization; the Arash-Band method. The present study modifies the Arash-Band method and employs output of the modified method in conjunction with the two other original techniques to extract indicative feature vectors for the screening. The extracted feature vectors are classified by using the support vector machine method. Results show that the proposed modifications significantly enhances performance of the Arash-Band in terms of the both accuracy and sensitivity as the corresponding effect sizes are sufficiently large. The proposed algorithm has been incorporated into an Android-based tablet to constitute an intelligent phonocardiogram with the automatic screening capability. In order to obtain confidence interval of the accuracy and sensitivity, an inferable statistical test is applied on our database containing the phonocardiogram signals recorded from 263 of the referrals to a hospital. The expected value of the accuracy/sensitivity is estimated to be 87.45 % / 87.29 % with a 95 % confidence interval of (80.19 % - 92.47 %) / (76.01 % - 95.78 %) exhibiting superior performance than a pediatric cardiologist who relies on conventional or even computer-assisted auscultation. Sustainability assessment can be used as a basic managerial analysis to evaluate the capability of water resources in supplying associated demands. Alteration of management policies in order to improve the systems' performance and sustainability can lead to additional costs of system operation. In this study a novel framework is proposed for assessing economic life cycle costs of dams considering system's performance from sustainability aspect. For convenience, the term Life Cycle Costs (LCC) is used instead of Economic LCC throughout this paper. First, a fuzzy model is proposed to discount and estimate the LCC of dams in different time intervals of their life span including: Construction, Operation and Maintenance (M&O), and Disposal periods. The model is capable of reflecting uncertainties caused by estimation and previsions of different costs because of fuzzy theory application. Then, sustainability of dam performance in operation period is evaluated through triple criteria of Reliability, Reversibility, and Vulnerability (R-R-V). To provide more realistic results, different system performance levels are defined based on the system's capability to supply demands and the importance of each level is evaluated by weighting them. Furthermore, it is studied how changes in reservoirs operation strategies can reduce the LCC because of higher performance. The proposed methodology is applied to assess the LCC and performance of a dam located at North Eastern part of Iran. The urgent need for rational use of water resources and the intense competition among most of the riparian countries with respect to the use of shared water sources have raised the importance of examining the contribution of base flow to total stream flow. This paper examines the Diyala transboundary river basin shared between Iraq and Iran. Daily unregulated flow records during the hydrologic years between 1955 and 1982 were considered at the upstream flow gauging station and daily unimpaired flow time series during the water years between 1931 and 1961 were examined at the most downstream hydrometric station. Two digital filtering algorithms and the flow duration curve method were applied to extract the base flow time series and compute its signature to total river flow. A generic methodology, which incorporates the flow duration curve method within digital filtering algorithms, has been introduced to obtain the filter parameter α in the filtering algorithms, and obtain the base flow contribution with a high level of confidence. Findings revealed that the base flow proportion is 38 % for the upper sub-basin and 31 % for the upper and middle combined sub-basins. The computed base flow signatures using the incorporated approach have very strong correlation coefficients of around 0.985. The driest year had the highest annual base flow index. The base flow index values started to increase in April and climbed to a peak by the end of May. A gradual decline between August and September was observed. Pattern informatics (PI) algorithm, which was introduced at the beginning of past decade, uses instrumental earthquake catalogs to investigate the time-dependent rate of seismicity in the study area and, based on the information from past events, calculates the probabilities for the occurrence of future large earthquakes. The main measure in this method is the number of events above a specified magnitude threshold M that is counted over a gridded area. PI has been applied in several regions of the world and different variants of the method have been developed over the past decade. Hence, the problem of formally evaluating and comparing the performances of the different PI variants needs to be addressed from an operational perspective, in order to identify the preferred application scheme and as well as to improve the performances of the method. In this study, PI is applied for the first time to the retrospective analysis of the earthquake catalogs of Iran and Italy, so as to check whether this method could forecast the past large events in these two regions with different level of data completeness and complex seismotectonic setting. The original PI algorithm and one of its modified variants, as well as the relative intensity (RI) model, are used to check the stability and statistical significance of the obtained results. In order to assess and compare the obtained results, the performances of the different PI variants are analyzed considering different evaluation strategies, which turn out to provide significantly different scores even for the same algorithm variant. We show that a critical point in the assessment of the obtained results is related with the definition and quantification of the space uncertainty of the issued forecasts, that is, with the extent of the territory where large earthquakes are to be expected. Accordingly, we emphasize the need for an appropriate definition of the evaluation strategies, clearly and unambiguously indicating the area where a large earthquake has to be expected. The study shows that, with respect to application in Iran and Italy, the performances of PI algorithm (both original and modified variants) are highly dependent on the selected evaluation strategy and do not provide better information than the simple RI model, which does not account for temporal properties of seismicity evolution. The overall performances can be improved by introducing specific thresholds that discard the less active cells; however, being based on some posterior optimization, a rigorous prospective testing is required to assess the forecasting capability of the method. The past five decades have witnessed satellite remote sensing become one of the most efficient tools for fire detection and estimating total burned areas. Not all algorithms are appropriate for detecting high-temperature events on a global scale. It is difficult for traditional fire detection algorithms to capture small and low-intensity fires with significant accuracy. For this, we propose an improved fire detection algorithm by considering channel 4 and 11 µm of MODIS data with two different thresholds for hot and cold seasons. Moreover, false alarm rejections caused by the edges of clouds are designed for this algorithm. The validation against 231 reference fires showed good performance of our algorithm over the northern forests of Iran. This algorithm detected 72 fires, while the MODIS fire product, a widely used source for fire detection, detected only 26 fires. The results indicate an outperformance of 19.91%. The results show that our algorithm for the fire detection method overperforms the traditional methods and can be particularly useful for fire detection in the northern forests of Iran and can be applied in similar forests worldwide. As an ongoing public health menace, the novel coronavirus pandemic has challenged the world. With several mutations and a high transmission rate, the virus is able to infect individuals in an exponential manner. At the same time, Iran is confronted with multiple wave peaks and the health care system is facing a major challenge. In consequence, developing a robust forecasting methodology can assist health authorities for effective planning. In that regard, with the help of Artificial Neural Network-Artificial Bee Colony (ANN-ABC) and Artificial Neural Network- Firefly Algorithm (ANN-FA) as two robust hybrid artificial intelligence-based models, the current study intends to select the optimal model with the maximum accuracy rate. To do so, first a sample of COVID-19 confirmed cases in Iran ranging from 19 February 2020 to 25 July 2021 is compiled. 75% (25%) of total observation is randomly allocated as training (testing) data. Afterwards, an ANN model is trained with Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm. Accordingly, based on R-squared and root-mean-square error criteria, the optimal number of hidden neurons is computed as 17. The proposed ANN model is employed to develop ANN-ABC and ANN-FA models for achieving the maximum accuracy rate. According to ANN-ABC, the R- squared values of the optimal model are 0.9884 and 0.9885 at train and test stages. In respect to ANN-FA, the R-squared ranged from 0.9954 to 0.9940 at the train and test phases, which indicates the outperformance of ANN-FA for predicting COVID-19 new cases in Iran. Finally, the proposed ANN-ABC and ANN-FA are applied for simulating the COVID-19 new cases data in different countries. Fires have increased in northeastern Iran as its semi-arid climate landscape is desiccated by human activities. To combat fire outbreaks in any region, fire susceptibility must be mapped using accurate and efficient models. This research mapped fire susceptibility in the forests and rangelands of Golestan Province in northeastern Iran using new data-mining models. Fire effective factors, including elevation, slope angle, annual mean rainfall, annual mean temperature, wind effect, topographic wetness index (TWI), plan curvature, distance to river, distance to road, and distance to village were obtained from several sources. The relative importance of each variable was determined using a random-forest algorithm. Fire-susceptibility maps were produced in R 3.0.2 software using GAM, MARS, SVM algorithms, and a new ensemble of the three models: GAM-MARS-SVM. The four fire-susceptibility maps were validated using the area under the curve. The results show that the distance to the village, annual mean rainfall, and elevation were of greatest importance in predicting fire susceptibility. The new GAM-MARS-SVM ensemble model achieved the highest precision of fire-susceptibility mapping. The fire-susceptibility map produced using the GAM-MARS-SVM ensemble model best detected the high fire risk areas in Golestan Province. The fire-susceptibility map produced by the ensemble model can be very useful for creating and enhancing management strategies for preventing fires, particularly in the higher-risk portions of Golestan Province. The present study aimed to model reconnaissance drought index (RDI) time series at three various time scales (i.e., RDI-6, RDI-9, RDI-12). Two weather stations located at Iran, namely Tehran and Dezful, were selected as the case study. First, support vector regression (SVR) was utilized as the standalone modeling technique. Then, hybrid models were implemented via coupling the standalone SVR with two bio-inspired-based techniques including firefly algorithm (FA) and whale optimization algorithm (WOA) as well as wavelet analysis (W). Accordingly, the hybrid SVR-FA, SVR-WOA, and W-SVR models were proposed. It is worth mentioning that six mother wavelets (i.e., Haar, Daubechies (db2, db4), Coifflet, Symlet, and Fejer-Korovkin) were employed in development of the hybrid W-SVR models. The performance of models was assessed through root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), Willmott index (WI), and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE). Generally, the implemented coupled models illustrated better results than the standalone SVR in modeling the RDI time series of studied locations. Besides, the Coifflet mother wavelet was found to be the best-performing wavelet. The most accurate results were achieved for RDI-12 modeling via the W-SVR utilizing db4(2) at Tehran station (RMSE = 0.253, MAE = 0.174, WI= 0.888, NSE = 0.934) and Coifflet(2) at Dezful station (RMSE = 0.301, MAE = 0.166, WI= 0.910, NSE = 0.936). Bed sills are a kind of grade control structure built at the same level as the river bed to protect it against erosion and to reduce the longitudinal slope of the channel. The aim of the present research was to determine the optimal dimensions of the structure by devising a new methodology to minimize cost and maximize stability, based on the optimization model of the multi-objective non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). This is achieved by calculating the width, height and distance between bed sills with these stability and cost objectives in mind. The NSGA-II algorithm is applied to solve the problem, and a set of Pareto points is obtained. The results are verified by considering the bed sills of the River Madarsoo in Iran and the River Plima in Italy, and comparing the results with those obtained using the Branch-and-Bound (B-and-B) algorithm. The results indicate that the cost and stability could respectively be improved by up to 18 and 20% in the River Madarsoo, and up to 18 and 26% in the River Plima, if the NSGA-II algorithm is used. Ground vibration is the most detrimental effect induced by blasting in surface mines. This study presents an improved bagged support vector regression (BSVR) combined with the firefly algorithm (FA) to predict ground vibration. In other words, the FA was used to modify the weights of the SVR model. To verify the validity of the BSVR–FA, the back-propagation neural network (BPNN) and radial basis function network (RBFN) were also applied. The BSVR–FA, BPNN and RBFN models were constructed using a comprehensive database collected from Shur River dam region, in Iran. The proposed models were then evaluated by means of several statistical indicators such as root mean square error (RMSE) and symmetric mean absolute percentage error. Comparing the results, the BSVR–FA model was found to be the most accurate to predict ground vibration in comparison to the BPNN and RBFN models. Inversion of magnetic data has been an important tool for the interpretation of the data. The conventional inversion approaches cannot recover geologically acceptable models in the presence of remanence. Hence, some techniques have been developed for the inversion of magnetic amplitude data which is independent of magnetization direction. The conventional methods in the inversion of magnetic amplitude data give rise to blurred models with long tails. In this study, a new algorithm has been developed in favor of sparse inversion of the data that generates more focused models using the Cauchy norm. The algorithm applies a regularized conjugate gradient (RCG) method to acquire the inverse model. The new algorithm has been employed for the inversion of two data sets from synthetic examples and magnetic data sets over the Allahabad iron deposit in Iran and the Osborne copper–gold deposit in Australia. Due to the recent climate changes and their consequences such as flash floods and droughts, there is a need for Land Use Land Cover mapping to monitor environmental changes which have effects on ecology, policy management, health, and disaster management. It should be noticed that recent droughts caused by climate change, and on the other hand, population growth has increased the rate of urbanization in Iran, where people are moving from rural areas to urban areas. In this study, two well-known machine learning classifiers, including Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Complex Tree (CTree), are used for land cover mapping. An advanced supervised algorithm, namely the Derivative-free Multi-layer Perceptron (FDMLP), which is based on the Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) function, is developed in MATLAB programming language. The FDMLP uses a derivative-free function for the optimization of the MLP function parameters. Three different scenarios using Landsat-8 imagery with spatial resolutions of 30 and 15 m are defined to investigate the effects of data pre-processing on the final predicted Land Use Land Cover (LULC) maps. A Deep Neural Network (DNN) is used for LULC mapping as well. The FDMLP classifier has outperformed the other two well-known algorithms of the SVM and the CTree for the classification of the pixel-based Landsat-8 imagery and the object-based Landsat-8 imagery with a spatial resolution of 15 m in terms of the overall accuracy and index of kappa. Based on the test data, the DNN classifier for the object-based Landsat-8 imagery with a spatial resolution of 15 m with values of 91.28 and 88.57 percent for the OA and Kappa index has outperformed the other supervised classifiers. Suspended sediment load (SSL) estimation is a required exercise in water resource management. This article proposes the use of hybrid artificial neural network (ANN) models, for the prediction of SSL, based on previous SSL values. Different input scenarios of daily SSL were used to evaluate the capacity of the ANN-ant lion optimization (ALO), ANN-bat algorithm (BA) and ANN-particle swarm optimization (PSO). The Goorganrood basin in Iran was selected for this study. First, the lagged SSL data were used as the inputs to the models. Next, the rainfall and temperature data were used. Optimization algorithms were used to fine-tune the parameters of the ANN model. Three statistical indexes were used to evaluate the accuracy of the models: the root-mean-square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE) and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE). An uncertainty analysis of the predicting models was performed to evaluate the capability of the hybrid ANN models. A comparison of models indicated that the ANN-ALO improved the RMSE accuracy of the ANN-BA and ANN-PSO models by 18% and 26%, respectively. Based on the uncertainty analysis, it can be surmised that the ANN-ALO has an acceptable degree of uncertainty in predicting daily SSL. In the current highly competitive airline market, many companies have failed due to their low revenue rates. For this reason, many of them have to develop strategies to increase their revenue. In this study, we develop revenue management (RM) strategy for the Iranian airline industry. More specifically, we present a mathematical model that considers some conditions not studied in previous research in order to provide a more realistic RM modeling of airlines that fits well for the special characteristics of Iranian Airways. A binary differential evolution algorithm is employed to solve the model due to the stochastic nature of data and the NP-hardness of the considered problem. To generate maximum revenue among the six types of airplanes that fly the four capital cities of Iran, the airline under investigation is advised to operate only 21 flights to those cities and cancel the rest of the flights. The growing prevalence of droughts and water scarcity have increased the importance of operating dam and reservoir systems efficiently. Several methods based on algorithms have been developed in recent years in a bid to optimize water release operation policy, in order to overcome or minimize the impact of droughts. However, all of these algorithms suffer from some weaknesses or drawbacks – notably early convergence, a low rate of convergence, or trapping in local optimizations – that limit their effectiveness and efficiency in seeking to determine the global optima for the operation of water systems. Against this background, the present study seeks to introduce and test a Hybrid Algorithm (HA) which integrates the Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) with the Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm (PSOA) with the goal of minimizing irrigation deficiencies in a multi-reservoir system. The proposed algorithm was tested for a specific important multi-reservoir system in Iran: namely the Golestan Dam and Voshmgir Dam system. The results showed that applying the HA could reduce average irrigation deficiencies for the Golestan Dam substantially, to only 2 million cubic meters (MCM), compared to deficiency values for the Genetic Algorithm (GA), PSOA and GSA of 15.1, 6.7 and 5.8 MCM respectively. In addition, the HA performed very efficiently, reducing substantially the computational time needed to achieve the global optimal when compared with the other algorithms tested. Furthermore, the HA showed itself capable of assuring a high volumetric reliability index (VRI) to meet the pattern of water demand downstream from the dams, as well as clearly outperforming the other algorithms on other important indices. Approximately 300 million people are afflicted with asthma around the world, with the estimated death rate of 250,000 cases, indicating the significance of this disease. If not treated, it can turn into a serious public health problem. The best method to treat asthma is to control it. Physicians recommend continuous monitoring on asthma symptoms and offering treatment preventive plans based on the patient's control level. Therefore, successful detection of the disease control level plays a critical role in presenting treatment plans. In view of this objective, we collected the data of 96 asthma patients within a 9-month period from a specialized hospital for pulmonary diseases in Tehran. A new ensemble learning algorithm with combining physicians' knowledge in the form of a rule-based classifier and supervised learning algorithms is proposed to detect asthma control level in a multivariate dataset with multiclass response variable. The model outcome resulting from the balancing operations and feature selection on data yielded the accuracy of 91.66%. Our proposed model combines medical knowledge with machine learning algorithms to classify asthma control level more accurately. This model can be applied in electronic self-care systems to support the real-time decision and personalized warnings on possible deterioration of asthma control level. Such tools can centralize asthma treatment from the current reactive care models into a preventive approach in which the physician's therapeutic actions would be based on control level. A robust methodology to determine geological facies in oil and gas fields is the integration of seismic attributes and well data to estimate flow zone indicator (FZI). Recently, the application of fuzzy and Neuro-Fuzzy approach regarding this purpose has enjoyed an increasing attention. The current study was carried out in the Surmeh (Arab) formation at Persian Gulf basin, Southern Iran. A Nero-fuzzy system was applied to estimate FZI cube from seismic attributes. To do so, core data and seismic data from four wells were imported to ANFIS system. Subsequently, the outcomes were compared with those of probabilistic neural network (PNN). Finally, a fuzzy C-Means clustering (FCM) technique was applied to characterize different hydraulic flow units (HFUs). The results of this study demonstrate that adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS) turn out to be successful in modeling FZI from seismic attributes and well data for a faraway well location. Community Based Organizations (CBOs) are important health system stakeholders with the mission of addressing the social and economic needs of individuals and groups in a defined geographic area, usually no larger than a county. The access and success efforts of CBOs vary, depending on the integration between health care providers and CBOs but also in relation to the community participation level. To achieve widespread results, it is important to carefully design an efficient network which can serve as a bridge between the community and the health care system. This study addresses this challenge through a location-allocation model that deals with the hierarchical nature of the system explicitly. To reflect social welfare concerns of equity, local accessibility, and efficiency, we develop the model in a multi-objective framework, capturing the ambiguity in the decision makers' aspiration levels through a fuzzy goal programming approach. Distinguishing between awake and anesthetized states is one of the important problems in surgery. Vital signals contain valuable information that can be used in prediction of different levels of anesthesia. Some monitors based on electroencephalogram (EEG) such as the Bispectral (BIS) index have been proposed in recent years. This study proposes a new method for characterizing between awake and anesthetized states. We validated our method by obtaining data from 25 patients during the cardiac surgery that requires cardiopulmonary bypass. At first, some linear and non-linear features are extracted from EEG signals. Then a method called 'LLE'(Locally Linear Embedding) is used to map high-dimensional features in a three-dimensional output space. Finally, low dimensional data are used as an input to a quadratic discriminant analyzer (QDA). The experimental results indicate that an overall accuracy of 88.4 % can be obtained using this method for classifying the EEG signal into conscious and unconscious states for all patients. Considering the reliability of this method, we can develop a new EEG monitoring system that could assist the anesthesiologists to estimate the depth of anesthesia accurately. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is used for the multi-objective optimization of the Sefidrud reservoir in Northern Iran. The main objectives include water supply, hydropower generation and sediment flushing. In addition to some physical constraints such as the reservoir storage and the outlet flow, maximum flushing outflow and non-flushing in irrigation seasons, the environmental constraints as fish migration and spawning are taken into an account. After obtaining the Pareto optimal solutions by means of the weighted objective functions and non-symmetric Nash bargaining, various scenarios are defined. Then these scenarios are analyzed by introducing a new sustainability index. Furthermore, the different percentages of downstream water demand are considered in order to achieve a better evaluation of the scenarios. The results of study indicate that the optimal solutions are more sustainable than those of the current operation of Sefidrud reservoir, which increase the sediment flushing by 37 million tons compared to the current operation, with the same hydroelectric energy and downstream water supply. Prediction of daily evaporation has an important role in reservoir management, regional water planning and evaluation of drinking-water supplies. The main purpose of this study was to assess different types of mother wavelet as activation functions instead of commonly used sigmoid for finding the main differences in the results of daily pan evaporation prediction in the Lar synoptic station. So, using conjunction of wavelet theory and multilayer perceptron (MLP) network, two mother Wavelets named Mexican Hat and polyWOG1 are considered for developing hybrid WNNs. The algorithms were trained and tested using a 6-year data record (1999 daily values) from 2005/01/01 to 2010/09/01. Instead of using common sigmoid activation functions in MLP network, wavelet function was applied to construct the wavelet neural network. Results show that Mexican hat wavelet neural network in the best topology presents 98.35 % accuracy in training phase and 96.04 % in testing and PolyWOG1 wavelet neural network in the best topology presents 95.92 % accuracy in training phase and 91.03 % in testing of model. In the MLP model with standard sigmoid function results were 90.6 % in training and 87.63 % in testing. Of several brick tomb towers constructed at Maragha in western Iran before the Mongol conquests, one in particular, Gonbad-e Qabud (593 H. / 1196-97 C.E.), has generated significant recent attention for its unique patterns with pentagons and decagons. Gonbad-e Qabud is also unusual in having a decagonal plan. While both plan and decoration distinguish it from earlier and later towers at Maragha and elsewhere on the Iranian plateau, the ornamental patterns follow a long line of experimentation with geometric expressions that grace many pre-Mongol buildings in Iran. This article examines in particular the overlapping polygons and radial symmetries of the tympanum of the cubic Gonbad-e Sork (542 H. / 1148 C.E.) at Maragha, and the pentagons and squares of the tympanum of the later octagonal tomb tower (486 H. / 1093 C.E.) nearby at Kharraqan. Drawing from archival sources (plans, elevations, photographs), analysis of plane patterns, and comparative architectural data, this article reevaluates the cultural significance of Gonbad-e Qabud, seeking to situate it within the histories of mathematics, architecture, and the arts. Reservoir system reliability is the ability of reservoir to perform its required functions under stated conditions for a specified period of time. In classical method of reservoir system reliability analysis, the operation policy is used in a simple simulation model, considering the historical/synthetic inflow series and a number of physical bounds on a reservoir system. This type of reliability analysis assumes a reservoir system as fully failed or functioning, called binary state assumption. A number of researchers from various research backgrounds have shown that the binary state assumption in the traditional reliability theory is not extensively acceptable. Our approach to tackle the present problem space is to implement the algorithm of advance first order second moment (AFOSM) method. In this new method, the inflow and reservoir storage are considered as uncertain variables. The mean, variance and covariance of uncertain variables are determined using moment values of reservoir state variables. For this purpose, a stochastic optimization model developed based on the constraint state formulation is applied. The proposed model of reliability analysis is used to a real case study in Iran. As a result, monthly probabilities of water allocation were computed from AFOSM method, and the outputs were compared with those from Monte Carlo method. The comparison shows that the outputs from AFOSM method are similar to those from the Monte Carlo method. In term of practical use of this study, the proposed method is appropriate to determine the monthly probability of failure in water allocation without the aid of simulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A neural network combined to an artificial neural network model is used to forecast daily total atmospheric ozone over Isfahan city in Iran. In this work, in order to forecast the total column ozone over Isfahan, we have examined several neural networks algorithms with different meteorological predictors based on the ozone-meteorological relationships with previous day’s ozone value. The meteorological predictors consist of temperatures (dry and dew point) and geopotential heights at standard levels of 100, 50, 30, 20 and 10 hPa with their wind speed and direction. These data together with previous day total ozone forms the input matrix of the neural model that is based on the back propagation algorithm (BPA) structure. The output matrix is the daily total atmospheric ozone. The model was build based on daily data from 1997 to 2004 obtained from Isfahan ozonometric station data. After modeling these data we used 3 year (from 2001 to 2003) of daily total ozone for testing the accuracy of model. Abstract Optimization of a multi-reservoir system operation is challenging due to the non-linearity, stochasticity, and dimensionality involved in such a problem. In this research, a long-term planning model is presented for optimizing the operation of Iranian Karoon-Dez reservoir system using an interior-point algorithm. The system is the largest multi-purpose reservoir system in Iran with hydropower generation, water supply, and environmental objectives. The focus is on resolving the dimensionality of this problem while considering hydropower generation and water supply objectives. The weighting and constraints methods of multi-objective programming are used to assess the trade-off between water supply and hydropower objectives so as to find noninferior solutions. This study focuses on development of equilibrium strategy based on simulated annealing (SA) algorithm for balancing economic and environmental concerns in waste load allocation (WLA) problem. To resolve conflicts among various stakeholders, including Iran Department of Environment (DoE) as governmental authority and industrial and municipal dischargers, Stackelberg and Nash bargaining games have been applied in this WLA problem and the results have been compared. SA algorithm has been coupled to QUAL2Kw model to derive optimal WLA program and the environmental penalty tariff (EPT) in Nash bargaining and Stackelberg games. The proposed tools and methodologies were illustrated in a case study of multi-stakeholders WLA problem in Gheshlagh River, Sanandaj, Kordestan, Iran. The results indicate that lower BOD removal rates are allocated to the pollutant dischargers in the Stackelberg game compared to the Nash bargaining game. Furthermore, the EPT assigned by Iran DoE in Stackelberg and Nash bargaining games are 11.25 and 3.6 Rials/(gr/month), respectively. The estimated EPT in the Stackelberg game is close to the current tariff (10 Rials/(gr/month)) specified by Iran DoE on impermissible BOD discharges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
