The temperature measurement of material inside of an object is one of the key technologies for control of dynamical processes. For this purpose, various techniques such as laser-based thermography and phase-contrast imaging thermography have been studied. However, it is, in principle, impossible to measure the temperature of an element inside of an object using these techniques. One of the possible solutions is measurements of Doppler brooding effect in neutron resonance absorption (NRA). Here we present a method to measure the temperature of an element or an isotope inside of an object using NRA with a single neutron pulse of approximately 100 ns width provided from a high-power laser. We demonstrate temperature measurements of a tantalum (Ta) metallic foil heated from the room temperature up to 617 K. Although the neutron energy resolution is fluctuated from shot to shot, we obtain the temperature dependence of resonance Doppler broadening using a reference of a silver (Ag) foil kept to the room temperature. A free gas model well reproduces the results. This method enables element(isotope)-sensitive thermometry to detect the instantaneous temperature rise in dynamical processes. Since 2017, hormone-negative pituitary neuroendocrine tumors expressing the steroidogenic factor SF1 have been recognized as gonadotroph tumors (GnPT) but have been poorly studied. To further characterize their bio-clinical spectrum, 54 GnPT defined by immunostaining for FSH and/or LH (group 1, n = 41) or SF1 only (group 2, n = 13) were compared and studied for SF1, βFSH, βLH, CCNA2, CCNB1, CCND1, caspase 3, D2R, and AIP gene expression by qRT-PCR. Immunohistochemistry for AIP and/or D2R was performed in representative cases. Overall, patients were significantly younger in group 1 (P = 0.040 vs group 2), with a similar trend excluding recurrent cases (P = 0.078), and no significant difference in gender, tumor size, invasion or Ki67. SF1 expression was similar in both groups but negatively correlated with the patient's age (P = 0.013) and positively correlated with βLH (P < 0.001) expression. Beta-FSH and AIP were significantly higher in group 1 (P = 0.042 and P = 0.024, respectively). Ki67 was unrelated to gonadotroph markers but positively correlated with CCNB1 (P = 0.001) and negatively correlated with CCND1 (P = 0.008). D2R and AIP were strongly correlated with each other (P < 0.001), and both positively correlated with SF1, βFSH, βLH, and CCND1. AIP immunopositivity was frequently observed in both groups, with a similar median score, and unrelated to Ki67. D2R immunostaining was best detected with a polyclonal antibody and mostly cytoplasmic. This study indicates that hormone-negative GnPT tend to occur in older patients but do not significantly differ from other GnPT in terms of invasion or proliferation. Background: Gross total resection, when possible, is the first crucial treatment for high-grade gliomas, as it has been demonstrated to be associated with longer survival. Different intraoperative tools, such as neuronavigation, fluorescent agents, and intra-operative ultrasound, have been developed to help neurosurgeons to extend the resection. Methods: We describe the high-magnification microsurgery technique used during the first surgical removal for high-grade gliomas. We illustrate the key anatomical "markers" of normal brain parenchyma, which guide the surgery. Conclusion: High-magnification microsurgery is an anatomically based approach that allows the identification of key anatomical "markers" of normal brain parenchyma in order to resect high-grade gliomas safely and effectively. We propose a novel deep learning framework for animation video resequencing. Our system produces new video sequences by minimizing a perceptual distance of images from an existing animation video clip. To measure perceptual distance, we utilize the activations of convolutional neural networks and learn a perceptual distance by training these features on a small network with data comprised of human perceptual judgments. We show that with this perceptual metric and graph-based manifold learning techniques, our framework can produce new smooth and visually appealing animation video results for a variety of animation video styles. In contrast to previous work on animation video resequencing, the proposed framework applies to wide range of image styles and does not require hand-crafted feature extraction, background subtraction, or feature correspondence. High energy density physics is the field of physics dedicated to the study of matter and plasmas in extreme conditions of temperature, densities and pressures. It encompasses multiple disciplines such as material science, planetary science, laboratory and astrophysical plasma science. For the latter, high energy density states can be accompanied by extreme radiation environments and super-strong magnetic fields. The creation of high energy density states in the laboratory consists in concentrating/depositing large amounts of energy in a reduced mass, typically solid material sample or dense plasma, over a time shorter than the typical timescales of heat conduction and hydrodynamic expansion. Laser-generated, high current–density ion beams constitute an important tool for the creation of high energy density states in the laboratory. Focusing plasma devices, such as cone-targets are necessary in order to focus and direct these intense beams towards the heating sample or dense plasma, while protecting the proton generation foil from the harsh environments typical of an integrated high-power laser experiment. A full understanding of the ion beam dynamics in focusing devices is therefore necessary in order to properly design and interpret the numerous experiments in the field. In this work, we report a detailed investigation of large-scale, kilojoule-class laser-generated ion beam dynamics in focusing devices and we demonstrate that high-brilliance ion beams compress magnetic fields to amplitudes exceeding tens of kilo-Tesla, which in turn play a dominant role in the focusing process, resulting either in a worsening or enhancement of focusing capabilities depending on the target geometry. Purpose: People with drug-refractory epilepsy are potential candidates for surgery. In many cases, epileptogenic zone localization requires intracranial investigations, e.g., via ElectroCorticoGraphy (ECoG), which uses subdural electrodes to map eloquent areas of large cortical regions. Precise electrodes localization on cortical surface is mandatory to delineate the seizure onset zone. Simple thresholding operations performed on patients' computed tomography (CT) volumes recognize electrodes but also other metal objects (e.g., wires, stitches), which need to be manually removed. A new automated method based on shape analysis is proposed, which provides substantially improved performances in ECoG electrodes recognition. Methods: The proposed method was retrospectively tested on 24 CT volumes of subjects with drug-refractory focal epilepsy, presenting a large number (> 1700) of round platinum electrodes. After CT volume thresholding, six geometric features of voxel clusters (volume, symmetry axes lengths, circularity and cylinder similarity) were used to recognize the actual electrodes among all metal objects via a Gaussian support vector machine (G-SVM). The proposed method was further tested on seven CT volumes from a public repository. Simultaneous recognition of depth and ECoG electrodes was also investigated on three additional CT volumes, containing penetrating depth electrodes. Results: The G-SVM provided a 99.74% mean classification accuracy across all 24 single-patient datasets, as well as on the combined dataset. High accuracies were obtained also on the CT volumes from public repository (98.27% across all patients, 99.68% on combined dataset). An overall accuracy of 99.34% was achieved for the recognition of depth and ECoG electrodes. Conclusions: The proposed method accomplishes automated ECoG electrodes localization with unprecedented accuracy and can be easily implemented into existing software for preoperative analysis process. Hydrocephalus (HC) can be associated with vestibular schwannoma (VS) at presentation. Although spontaneous resolution of HC after VS removal is reported, first-line treatment is varied including preoperative ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt, external ventricular drainage (EVD), or lumbar drainage (LD). We performed a systematic review to clarify optimal management of HC associated with VS at presentation, as well as characteristics of patients with initial and persistent HC after VS removal, and prevalence of HC associated with VS. Fourteen studies were included. Patients were grouped according to the timing of HC treatment. The overall rate of VP shunts was 19.4%. Among patients who received VS removal as first-line treatment, 6.9% underwent permanent shunts. In a subgroup of 132 patients (studies with no-aggregate data), t test analysis for mean tumor size (P = 0.02) and mean CSF protein level (P < 0.001) demonstrated statistically significant differences between patients with resolved HC (3.48 cm and 201 mg/dL) and patients with persistent HC (2.46 cm and 76.8 mg/dL) after VS resection. Transient treatment of HC using EVD or LD further resolved the HC in 87.5% and 82.9% of patients, respectively, before and after VS removal. The overall prevalence of HC associated with VS in a population of 2336 patients was 9.3%. Schwannoma removal as first-line treatment is justified by its low rate of persistent HC requiring VP shunt (roughly 7%). Patients with smaller VS and lower CSF proteins present higher risk of persistent HC after schwannoma removal. The hydrofoil is a craft where the weight is entirely supported by the lift generated by the submerged part of wings. The particular structure of the craft requires a thorough study of the architecture of the hull, whose structure differs from others high speed vessels since the lift on wing surfaces are transmitted to the hull in limited areas (wing attacks). The authors have developed a research to optimize geometry of hull and wing system on a hydrofoil capable to carry 250 passengers at a speed of 35 knots, operating among Sicilian island. The principal goals of the new hydrofoil concern both the fuel reduction that the improvement of the comfort in terms of seakeeping and levels of acoustic vibrations. In order to reduce the power engines and the acoustic vibrations and to increase the seakeeping during the cruising route and the takeoff, a thorough study of the bow sections (whose profile contributes during this step to exert a thrust which, added to that provided by the wing surfaces, drastically reduces takeoff times) is conducted. Several experimental tests, performed at the towing tank, have allowed to better define the shapes of the hydrofoil and the profile of the wings. The widely accepted dogma of intrauterine sterility and initial colonization of the newborn during birth has been blurred by recent observations of microbial presence in meconium, placenta, and amniotic fluid. Given the importance of a maternal-derived in utero infant seeding, it is crucial to exclude potential environmental or procedural contaminations and to assess fetal colonization before parturition. To this end, we analyzed sterilely collected intestinal tissues, placenta, and amniotic fluid from rodent fetuses and tissues from autoptic human fetuses. Total bacterial DNA was extracted from collected samples and analyzed by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques using hypervariable 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) regions (V3-V4). Colonizing microbes were visualized in situ, using labeled probes targeting 16S ribosomal DNA by fluorescent in situ hybridization. The NGS analysis showed the presence of pioneer microbes in both rat and human intestines as well as in rodent placentas and amniotic fluids. Microbial communities showed fetus- and dam-dependent clustering, confirming the high interindividual variability of commensal microbiota even in the antenatal period. Fluorescent in situ hybridization analysis confirmed the microbes' presence in the lumen of the developing gut. Among the high speed crafts to be used as ferries, hydrofoils are considered the best solution to obtain high speeds and to reduce ship motions with the consequent comfort for passengers; in fact as long as the wave heights allow the hydrofoils to fly above the sea level the floating hulls are not effected by the sea conditions. It is important to underline that, in order to achieve the required performances, the construction techniques must be carefully controlled and refined because there are also some structural problems to be faced and solved to obtain a weight reduction. This study shows the results of a complete series of test, in towing tank and at sea, performed by the authors on a new class of hydrofoils designed and built by an Italian line. Galleria mellonella has been described as a cheap and an easy-to-reproduce model for the study of fungal infections. We hypothesized that yeasts with higher virulence potential decrease survival and significantly trigger an immune response in G. mellonella through the regulation of innate immunity-related genes encoding antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) such as gallerimycin and galiomicin. Candida albicans SC5314 and Candida dubliniensis CBS 7987, selected because of their different virulence potential, were used for a killing assay followed by the determination of gene expression using qPCR. In vivo results confirmed a significantly (p = 0.0321) lower pathogenicity for C. dubliniensis than for C. albicans. Accordingly, the induction of C. dubliniensis AMPs was lower at all the selected time points post-infection (1 h, 24 h, 48 h). Moreover, we observed an extremely high regulation of the galiomicin gene compared to the gallerimycin one, suggesting a different role of the tested AMPs in protecting G. mellonella from candidiasis. A relativistic laser pulse, confined in a cylindrical-like target, under specific conditions may perform multiple scattering along the internal target surface. This results in the confinement of the laser light, leading to a very efficient interaction. The demonstrated propagation of the laser pulse along the curved surface is just yet another example of the “whispering gallery” effect, although nonideal due to laser-plasma coupling. In the relativistic domain its important feature is a gradual intensity decrease, leading to changes in the interaction conditions. Intense lasers interacting with dense targets accelerate relativistic electron beams, which transport part of the laser energy into the target depth. However, the overall laser-to-target energy coupling efficiency is impaired by the large divergence of the electron beam, intrinsic to the laser-plasma interaction. Here we demonstrate that an efficient guiding of MeV electrons with about 30MA current in solid matter is obtained by imposing a laserdriven longitudinal magnetostatic field of 600 T. In the magnetized conditions the transported energy density and the peak background electron temperature at the 60-μm-thick target's rear surface rise by about a factor of five, as unfolded from benchmarked simulations. Such an improvement of energy-density flux through dense matter paves the ground for advances in laser-driven intense sources of energetic particles and radiation, driving matter to extreme temperatures, reaching states relevant for planetary or stellar science as yet inaccessible at the laboratory scale and achieving high-gain laser-driven thermonuclear fusion. Video-EEG monitoring with intracranial subdural electrodes is a useful assessment tool for the localization of the epileptogenic zone in patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy. We aimed at assessing the morbidity related to electrode implantation and the surgical outcome in patients who underwent epilepsy surgery after intracranial EEG monitoring. All patients ( N = 58) admitted to our Epilepsy Surgery Centre for drug-resistant focal epilepsy who underwent resective surgery after intracranial monitoring with subdural electrodes and were followed up for at least 2 years were included in the study. Their mean age was 30.4 years (range 8-60 years), 25 (43 %) were female, and 44 (76 %) had a preoperatively detected structural lesion. The mean duration of invasive recording was 2.3 days (range 1-14 days). Extraoperative ECoG allowed the identification of the epileptogenic focus in all cases. The temporal lobe was involved in 21 (36 %) patients, whereas extratemporal foci were identified in 24 (41 %) patients. Thirteen patients (23 %) had multilobar involvement. Functional brain mapping was performed in 15 (26 %) patients. Transient complications related to electrode implantation occurred in three patients. Among patients with evidence of lesion on preoperative MRI, lesionectomy alone was performed in 12 cases (27 %), while it was combined with tailored cortical resection in the remaining cases. Tailored cortical resection was also performed in patients without evidence of lesion on MRI. After resective surgery, transient neurological deficits occurred in five cases, while another patient experienced permanent lateral homonymous hemianopia. At the last follow-up observation, 34 (57 %) patients were seizure-free (Engel class I). The intraoperative identification of the lesions found at endoscopic examination is often difficult, especially during laparoscopic surgery. At present, the most used technique for the intraoperative detection of pathological lesions is endoscopic tattooing. The large majority of studies carried out concern colorectal lesions; however, endoscopic tattooing has also been described for esophageal, gastric, small bowel and, more recently, pancreatic lesions. We report a case of a 40-year-old Caucasian woman who came under our observation with a 7-year history of a chronic erythematous scaly dermatitis, diagnosed as psoriasis, involving gluteal area and thighs, and treated with topical steroids without benefit. During pregnancy, a progressive worsening of her condition and an extension of cutaneous lesions were observed. Her newborn, a 15-day-old girl, presented a similar scaly and squamous lesion on her scalp. Mycological examination was positive for Trichophyton rubrum in both cases, and random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis confirmed the isogenicity of the two isolates. We performed a diagnosis of T. rubrum tinea corporis and tinea capitis. The case we describe illustrates an unusual clinical presentation of tinea corporis with remarkable extension of cutaneous lesions due to the diagnostic delay and the continuous use of local steroids, together with a rare tinea capitis in the newborn. In the present work, we studied the distribution of Candida parapsilosis complex species and the antifungal susceptibility of clinical isolates collected during an Italian surveillance study of yeast invasive fungal infections (IFIs) in intensive care units (ICUs). Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined using the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) reference broth microdilution method. BanI digestion patterns of the secondary alcohol dehydrogenase polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products were used to identify C. parapsilosis sensu stricto, C. orthopsilosis, and C. metapsilosis. A total of 138 C. parapsilosis isolates were stored (January 2007-December 2008). The overall frequency of C. parapsilosis complex in IFIs was 22%. Of the 138 tested isolates, 95% were C. parapsilosis sensu stricto, 3.6% were C. orthopsilosis, and 1.4% were C. metapsilosis. The MIC values (expressed as μg/ml) for anidulafungin, caspofungin, and micafungin for C. parapsilosis complex were 2, 1, and 2, respectively, and the MIC values were 4, 2, and 4, respectively. The MIC and MIC values for itraconazole and posaconazole were 0.12 and 0.25, respectively, and for fluconazole, they were 1 and 4, respectively. This study, the most comprehensive study conducted to date to evaluate the frequency and antifungal susceptibility profiles of C. parapsilosis complex isolates from critically ill patients in Italy, highlights the low prevalence of C. orthopsilosis and C. metapsilosis in IFIs. Anidulafungin is an antifungal drug belonging to the echinocandin class with a potent in vitro fungicidal activity against a wide range of Candida species, including C. glabrata and C. krusei. Anidulafungin is also active in vitro against moulds belonging to the genus Aspergillus and some dematiaceous genera. Furthermore, anidulafungin demonstrates in vitro activity against Candida spp, growing as biofilms. Resistance to anidulafungin remains very rare based on recent epidemiological data. Paradoxical or trailing effects should be considered in echinocandin susceptibility testing. A diagnosis of invasive candidiasis can be achieved using conventional approaches (microscopy, culture, serology), as well as new methods, including antigen detection and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays. Most of the conventional approaches lack sensitivity, especially for obtaining a diagnosis of invasive candidiasis in immunocompromised patients. Antigen detection and PCR assays represent a valid alternative, in terms of their high potential sensitivity and specificity, but these procedures still need to be standardized and evaluated in a large number of patients. Background. Some brain tumors may grow immediately beneath the cortical surface without distorting its appearance. Intraoperative image guidance promotes safe resection. We have developed MRI-based corticotopography (MRI-bct), to localize lesions during surgery, using simple, non-dedicated equipment, to match a three-dimensional reconstruction with the corresponding appearance of the brain cortex. Methods. Forty-six patients underwent resection of subcortical brain lesions, aided by MRI-bct. The lesions had a maximum diameter less than 3 cm, were subcortical but no deeper than the floor of the nearest cerebral sulcus. Each patient had a volumetric MRI scan with and without contrast administration. Data sets were transferred to a laptop personal computer and processed using a rendering software. At operation, the three-dimensional model of the brain, including a surface overlay of the lesion, was matched to the exposed brain surface. After its exact relationship with the overlying sulcal pattern was defined, the lesion was localized and resected. In selected patients, the procedure was coupled with functional brain mapping. Results. Data processing took from 10 to 15 min and could be done whenever convenient before operation. Surface matching between the surgical field and the reformatted MRI always required less than 5 min and was done near the operating table. In all patients, the lesion was identified at the first attempt, through a small corticotomy, regardless of the brain shift after dural opening. Conclusions. MRI-bct is a practical, time-saving neuronavigational aid ideal for localizing superficial lesions underlying the cerebral cortex because it unmistakably characterizes the adjacent sulcal anatomy. Abstract

The antifungal susceptibility of 309 Candida glabrata and 63 Candida krusei clinical isolates was tested via the Sensititre YeastOne-3 system (Trek Diagnostic Systems, East Grinstead, UK) to compare the in vitro activity of voriconazole with that of five other antifungal agents (amphotericin B, fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, and flucytosine). Voriconazole was highly active (MIC90, 0.5 μg/ml) against isolates of both species, including those for which the MICs of itraconazole and fluconazole were high (MIC90s of itraconazole, 2 μg/ml for C. glabrata and 0.5 μg/ml for C. krusei; MIC90s of fluconazole, 32 μg/ml for C. glabrata and 64 μg/ml for C. krusei). Ketoconazole MIC90 values for both species were identical to those of voriconazole. The MIC90 of amphotericin B was similar for both species (0.125 μg/ml for C. glabrata and 0.25 μg/ml for C. krusei). As expected, flucytosine was only moderately active against C. krusei isolates (MIC90, 16 μg/ml) but was highly active against C. glabrata isolates (MIC90, 0.03 μg/ml). Potential cross-resistance within the azole class was noted for some strains of C. glabrata (5.5%) that presented high MIC values for all the azoles tested. In order to consider voriconazole a viable alternative to other triazoles for the treatment of infections caused by Candida species, susceptibility testing of all clinically significant isolates of C. glabrata and C. krusei is recommended because of the potential for azole cross-resistance. Models describing progression in the genetic derangement of glial tumors have shown chromosomal loss and gain occurring most frequently in high-grade lesions, suggesting that identification of these aberrations may be prognostically significant. In this study, Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) has been used to determine, and to confirm, loss and gain of chromosomes 1, 8, 10, 12 and 17, in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded brain biopsy tissue taken from 60 brain gliomas submitted to surgical resection or stereotactic biopsy. FISH analysis may be a valuable adjunct to histological grading. The results showed that this molecular cytogenetic technique is an important clinical and experimental tool that provides new insight on genetic alterations, confirming gain and loss of genetic material that occurs at the initiation and progression of human glioma. Our data suggests that potentially useful prognostic information may be obtained through this approach. The epidemiological features of 37 episodes of candidemia in HIV-infected subjects were analysed in a retrospective matched case-control study conducted over an 8-year period (1990–1997). Univariate analysis identified eight risk factors that were significantly associated with candidemia ( P<0.05): i) use of central venous catheters; ii) administration of total parenteral nutrition; iii) previous antifungal therapy; iv) previous therapy with glycopeptides; v) presence of oral/esophageal candidiasis; vi) concomitant bacterial infections; vii) neutropenia; and viii) concomitant AIDS dementia complex. Stepwise logistic regression analysis revealed that the only independent risk factor for developing candidemia was the use of central venous catheters ( P=0.0001). Candida albicans was the most frequently isolated pathogen, accounting for 18 (48%) episodes of candidemia, followed by Candida tropicalis (19%) and Candida glabrata (11%). The crude mortality rate was 62%. On univariate analysis concomitant opportunistic infections, presence of non- Candida albicans species of Candida and neutropenia were shown to be predictive of death. Multivariate analysis revealed that the presence of non- Candida albicans strains of Candida was the only significant factor associated with a worse prognosis ( P=0.001). In conclusion, candidemia appears to be more common in patients with advanced HIV disease. A secreted killer toxin was detected through the cell wall of Pichia anomala cells by ultrastructural immunodetection with a specific monoclonal antibody (MAb KT4). MAb KT4 was successively detected by colloidal gold labeled streptavidin and biotinylated anti-mouse F(ab') antibodies. The antigenic determinants of the toxin were localized throughout the cytoplasm and the cell wall of killer yeast cells. The Lowicryl K4M-immunogold method gave very satisfactory results and showed that the killer toxin was somewhat concentrated in the yeast cell wall layers before being exported into the medium. In agreement with previous reports, the binding of MAb KT4 suggested that the P. anomala killer toxin secretion did not result from a homogeneous diffusion across the yeast cell wall. Yeast killer toxins coded by determined and undetermined killer plasmids or presumptive nuclear gene(s) in various genera ( Saccharomyces, Kluyveromyces, Pichia and Candida) have been serologically investigated by a monoclonal antibody (KT4), produced against the yeast killer toxin of Pichia (Hansenula) anomala UCSC 25F. Experimental infections were produced in guinea pigs, rabbits and dogs with lesions similar to those seen in human seborrheic dermatitis and otitis externa by cutaneous application of cultures of Malassezia furfur and M. pachydermatis. Ascites fluid from hybridoma cell lines producing monoclonal antibodies to an exoantigen of Microsporum canis was assayed for its precipitating properties. Three types of monoclonal antibodies were used for serological analysis of heterologous mycelial cultures. Based on specific antigenic determinants, the fungal strains showed different immunodiffusion reactivity within the species. High sensitivity rates to the activity of killer toxins produced by 25 species of yeasts belonging to the genera Candida, Hansenula, Pichia, Rhodotorula, Saccharomyces and Trichosporon have been observed among 112 yeast isolates (25 Cryptococcus neoformans, 29 C. glabrata, 16 C. parapsilosis, 20 C. pseudotropicalis and 22 C. tropicalis). The highest sensitivity has been observed among the C. parapsilosis isolates, the lowest in C. glabrata strains. Genera Pichia and Hansenula proved to have the greatest killer activity. A killer system, formerly used for differentiating C. albicans isolates within the species, proved to be valid as epidemiological marker when applied to 112 strains of pathogenic yeasts. As part of a study sponsored by the Ministry of Health of Italy, a research program on pathogenic actinomycetes, keratinophilic and pathogenic fungi in soil was carried out. Two hundred soil samples, collected from different areas of the city of Rome, Calabria, Emilia Romagna, Latium, Apulia, Sardinia, Sicily, Tuscany and Umbria, were examined by several techniques to detect the widest possible variety of pathogenic actinomycetes and fungi. Seven isolates of Nocardia asteroides, four of Actinomadura madurae and one of Nocardiopsis dassonvillei were isolated for the first time from soil in Italy. In addition, numerous isolates of Petriellidium boydii, Aspergillus fumigatus, A. flavus, A. niger and keratinophilic fungi of the genera Microsporum, Trichophyton and Chrysosporium were also recovered. A mycotoxin, confirmed by chemical, physical and spectroscopic data as the PR toxin described by Ru-Dong Wei and coll. (15) has been isolated from culture filtrates of Penicillium roqueforti Thom. Factors affecting the toxin and mycelium production, acute and chronic toxicity in experimental animals and the frequency of toxinogenesis of 21 isolates of P. roqueforti (including a brown mutant) isolated from different materials, foods especially, were also studied. Anidulafungin is a new echinocandin with potent in vitro activity against Aspergillus and Candida species, including those resistant to fluconazole and amphotericin B. Results of several clinical trials indicate that anidulafungin is effective in treating oesophageal candidiasis, including azole-refractory disease. The results of a single randomized clinical trial comparing fluconazole and anidulafungin demonstrated that anidulafungin was noninferior to fluconazole in the treatment of candidaemia and invasive candidiasis. Studies evaluating the concomitant use of anidulafungin and either amphotericin B, voriconazole or ciclosporin did not demonstrate significant drug-drug interactions or adverse events. Anidulafungin appears to have an excellent safety profile: alterations of liver enzymes have been reported and slow infusion is recommended to prevent histamine-like reactions. The double laser pulse approach to relativistic electron beam (REB) collimation in solid targets has been investigated at the LULI-ELFIE facility. In this scheme two collinear laser pulses are focused onto a solid target with a given intensity ratio and time delay to generate REBs. The magnetic field generated by the first laser-driven REB is used to guide the REB generated by a second delayed laser pulse. We show how electron beam collimation can be controlled by properly adjusting the ratio of focus size and the delay time between the two pulses. We found that the maximum of electron beam collimation is clearly dependent on the laser focal spot size ratio and related to the magnetic field dynamics. Preliminary results on the carcinogenic activity of a mycotoxin of Penicillium roqueforti (PR toxin) are reported. A squamous epithelioma and a uterine sarcoma were histologically confirmed in 2 of 10 albino rats fed PR toxin in a relatively short time (449 and 551 days respectively). The dependence of the mean kinetic energy of laser-accelerated relativistic electrons (REs) on the laser intensity, so-called ponderomotive scaling, explains well the experimental results to date; however, this scaling is no longer applicable to multi-picosecond (multi-ps) laser experiments. Here, the production of REs was experimentally investigated via multi-ps relativistic laser–plasma-interaction (LPI). The lower slope temperature shows little dependence on the pulse duration and is close to the ponderomotive scaling value, while the higher slope temperature appears to be affected by the pulse duration. The higher slope temperature is far beyond the ponderomotive scaling value, which indicates super-ponderomotive REs (SP-REs). Simulation and experimental evidence are provided to indicate that the SP-REs are produced by LPI in an under-critical plasma, where a large quasi-static electromagnetic field grows rapidly after a threshold timing during multi-ps LPI. When a material is irradiated with a high-intensity laser pulse, its surface ionization generates electrons that are accelerated close to the speed of light by the ponderomotive force of the laser light, yet how electrons' kinetic energy scales with laser power is still unclear. The authors experimentally clarify this relation and by modelling individual electron trajectories using numerical simulations identify two acceleration mechanisms for the generation of relativistic electrons related to the dependency of the electric and magnetic fields. Increasing the laser energy absorption into energetic particle beams represents a longstanding quest in intense laser-plasma physics. During the interaction with matter, part of the laser energy is converted into relativistic electron beams, which are the origin of secondary sources of energetic ions, γ-rays and neutrons. Here we experimentally demonstrate that using multiple coherent laser beamlets spatially and temporally overlapped, thus producing an interference pattern in the laser focus, significantly improves the laser energy conversion efficiency into hot electrons, compared to one beam with the same energy and nominal intensity as the four beamlets combined. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations support the experimental results, suggesting that beamlet interference pattern induces a periodical shaping of the critical density, ultimately playing a key-role in enhancing the laser-to-electron energy conversion efficiency. This method is rather insensitive to laser pulse contrast and duration, making this approach robust and suitable to many existing facilities. Fast isochoric heating of a pre-compressed plasma core with a high-intensity short-pulse laser is an attractive and alternative approach to create ultra-high-energy-density states like those found in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) ignition sparks. Laser-produced relativistic electron beam (REB) deposits a part of kinetic energy in the core, and then the heated region becomes the hot spark to trigger the ignition. However, due to the inherent large angular spread of the produced REB, only a small portion of the REB collides with the core. Here, we demonstrate a factor-of-two enhancement of laser-to-core energy coupling with the magnetized fast isochoric heating. The method employs a magnetic field of hundreds of Tesla that is applied to the transport region from the REB generation zone to the core which results in guiding the REB along the magnetic field lines to the core. This scheme may provide more efficient energy coupling compared to the conventional ICF scheme. It is desirable to deposit more energy in the dense plasma core to trigger the fusion ignition. Using one of the world most powerful laser facility, we demonstrate for the first time that high-contrast multi-picosecond pulses are advantageous for proton acceleration. By extending the pulse duration from 1.5 to 6 ps with fixed laser intensity of 1018 W cm−2, the maximum proton energy is improved more than twice (from 13 to 33 MeV). At the same time, laser-energy conversion efficiency into the MeV protons is enhanced with an order of magnitude, achieving 5% for protons above 6 MeV with the 6 ps pulse duration. The proton energies observed are discussed using a plasma expansion model newly developed that takes the electron temperature evolution beyond the ponderomotive energy in the over picoseconds interaction into account.
