Tea catechin is one of the compounds that are closely related to obesity and insulin sensitivity. In order to determine the effect of catechin on adipocyte differentiation, we treated 3T3-L1 preadipocytes with different kinds of catechins. Our results showed that catechins, especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), significantly reduced intracellular lipid accumulation and repressed the activity of glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, an enzyme involved in lipid synthesis. Furthermore, glucose and fatty acid transport were also suppressed by catechin. We then analyzed the activity of transcription factors—forkhead transcription factor class O1 (FoxO1) and sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP1c)—which are involved in adipocyte differentiation and lipid synthesis, respectively. The transcriptional activities of both these factors significantly decreased by EGCG. Western blot analysis revealed that EGCG induced the insulin signal-mediated phosphorylation of FoxO1 (Thr24, Ser256). A cluster of oligonucleotide repeat sequences was identified that is linked to the melon ( Cucumis melo L.) andromonoecious ( a) locus, which controls andromonoecy. Six different repeat units, ranging from 11 to 49 base pairs, were clustered within a 0.6-kb intergenic region. The number of repeat units varied from two to six. After sequence analysis of diverse melon germplasms, four haplotypes of this cluster were identified. Length variations among the four haplotypes resulted from insertion or deletion of repeat sequences. Particularly, a tandem array of six repeats of 21 nucleotides was a hotspot for insertion/deletion mutations. A simple PCR-based marker was developed to identify haplotypes of this cluster based on the length polymorphism. In practice, this marker was successfully used in genetic purity tests of melon F1 hybrid cultivars. Four self-pollinated contaminants, which were confirmed by phenotypic examination in grow-out tests, were easily discriminated from 99 F1 hybrid individuals. In addition, the genetic distance between this marker and the andromonoecious ( a) locus was calculated as 7.9 cM, after analyzing melon F2 populations originating from a cross between monoecious and andromonoecious parental lines. A male-sterile (MS) radish ( Raphanus sativus L.) was found in an accession collected from Uzbekistan. Unlike Ogura MS radishes in which no pollen grain is typically visible during anthesis, a small number of pollen grains stuck together in the dehiscing anthers was observed in the newly identified MS radish. Fluorescein diacetate tests and scanning electron micrographs showed that pollen grains in the new MS radish were severely deformed and non-viable. Cytological examination of pollen development stages showed a clear difference in the defective stage from that seen in Ogura male-sterility. Reciprocal cross-pollination with diverse male-fertile lines indicated that pollen grains of the new MS radish were completely sterile, and the female organs were fully fertile. When the new MS radish and Ogura MS lines were cross-pollinated with a set of eight breeding lines, all F1 progeny originating from crosses with the new MS radish were male-sterile. In contrast, most of the F1 progeny resulting from crosses with Ogura MS lines were male-fertile. These results demonstrated that factors associated with induction of the newly identified male-sterility are different from those of Ogura male-sterility. The lack of restorer lines for the newly identified male-sterility led us to predict that it might be a complete cytoplasmic male-sterility without restorer-of-fertility genes in nuclear genomes. However, cross-pollination with more diverse radish germplasm identified one accession introduced from Russia that could completely restore fertility, proving the existence of restorer-of-fertility gene(s) for the new male-sterility. Meanwhile, the PCR amplification profile of molecular markers for the classification of radish mitochondrial genome types revealed that the new MS radish contained a novel mitotype. We introduce a high surface area sensor composed of Co3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) embedded within porous ZnO nanofibers (NFs), exhibiting a notable response to acetone. Initially, we synthesized polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) NFs containing zinc and cobalt salts via a simple electrospinning method. Subsequently, the calcination of the PVP NFs resulted in the formation of Co3O4 NPs embedded within the porous ZnO NFs. The heterostructure material demonstrated a significant response to 100 ppm acetone detection, with a ratio of electrical resistance in air (Ra) to that in the presence of gas (Rg) reaching 111 at its optimal operating temperature of 275 °C. Resistive random-access memory (ReRAM) devices based on halide perovskites have recently emerged as a new class of data storage devices, where the switching materials used in these devices have attracted extensive attention in recent years. Thus far, three-dimensional (3D) halide perovskites have been the most investigated materials for resistive switching memory devices. However, 3D-based memory devices display ON/OFF ratios comparable to those of oxide or chalcogenide ReRAM devices. In addition, perovskite materials are susceptible to exposure to air. Herein, we compare the resistive switching characteristics of ReRAM devices based on a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskite, (PEA)2Cs3Pb4I13, to those based on 3D CsPbI3. Astonishingly, the ON/OFF ratio of the (PEA)2Cs3Pb4I13-based memory devices (109) is three orders of magnitude higher than that of the CsPbI3 device, which is attributed to a decrease in the high-resistance state (HRS) current of the former. This device also retained a high ON/OFF current ratio for 2 weeks under ambient conditions, whereas the CsPbI3 device degraded rapidly and showed unreliable memory properties after 5 days. These results strongly suggest that quasi-2D halide perovskites have potential in resistive switching memory based on their desirable ON/OFF ratio and long-term stability. Methylation patterns in cell-free DNA (cfDNA) have emerged as a promising genomic feature for detecting the presence of cancer and determining its origin. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of methylation-sensitive restriction enzyme digestion followed by sequencing (MRE-Seq) using cfDNA, and to investigate the cancer signal origin (CSO) of the cancer using a deep neural network (DNN) analyses for liquid biopsy of colorectal and lung cancer. We developed a selective MRE-Seq method with DNN learning-based prediction model using demethylated-sequence-depth patterns from 63,266 CpG sites using SacII enzyme digestion. A total of 191 patients with stage I–IV cancers (95 lung cancers and 96 colorectal cancers) and 126 noncancer participants were enrolled in this study. Our study showed an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.978 with a sensitivity of 78.1% for colorectal cancer, and an AUC of 0.956 with a sensitivity of 66.3% for lung cancer, both at a specificity of 99.2%. For colorectal cancer, sensitivities for stages I–IV ranged from 76.2 to 83.3% while for lung cancer, sensitivities for stages I–IV ranged from 44.4 to 78.9%, both again at a specificity of 99.2%. The CSO model's true-positive rates were 94.4% and 89.9% for colorectal and lung cancers, respectively. The MRE-Seq was found to be a useful method for detecting global hypomethylation patterns in liquid biopsy samples and accurately diagnosing colorectal and lung cancers, as well as determining CSO of the cancer using DNN analysis. After the development of Web 2.0 and social networks, analyzing consumers' responses and opinions in real-time became profoundly important to gain business insights. This study aims to identify consumers' preferences and perceptions of genderless fashion trends by text-mining, Latent Dirichlet Allocation-based topic modeling, and time-series linear regression analysis. Unstructured text data from consumer-posted sources, such as blogs and online communities, were collected from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2020. We examined 9722 posts that included the keyword "genderless fashion" with Python 3.7 software. Results showed that consumers were interested in fragrances, fashion, and beauty brands and products. In particular, 18 topics were extracted: 13 were classified as fashion categories and 5 were derived from beauty and fragrance sectors. Examining the genderless fashion trend development among consumers from 2018 to 2020, "perfume and scent" was revealed as the hot topic, whereas "bags," "all-in-one skin care," and "set-up suit" were cold topics, declining in popularity among consumers. The findings contribute to contemporary fashion trends and provide in-depth knowledge about consumers' perceptions using big data analysis methods and offer insights into product development strategies. Recently perovskites-based inorganic compounds have been researched incredibly for their photocatalytic applications. In this work, rubidium tin chloride [Rb2SnCl6] and caesium-incorporated rubidium [(RbXCs1-X)2SnCl6]-defect perovskites were synthesized for photocatalytic applications. This material is very useful for the degradation of dyes under UV irradiation among other photocatalysts, because of its superior properties such as nontoxicity, low cost, simple preparation methods and long-term thermal stability. The crystal structure, morphology and elemental composition of synthesized defect perovskite materials have been analysed using XRD, FESEM and EDAX mapping analysis. The UV studies reveal that the band-gap values were tuned (from 2.71 eV in Rb2SnCl6 to 3.78 eV in (Rb0.5Cs0.5)2SnCl6), resulting in a blue shift of the PL emission peak (from 458 to 328 nm) due to the incorporation of caesium in rubidium site. The thermal stability of (Rb0.5Cs0.5)2SnCl6 is enhanced over other synthesized defect perovskite materials because 76% of samples remained at the highest temperature of 750 °C. Synthesized defect perovskite materials were used in the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye under UV light radiation. Furthermore, an excellent photocatalytic degradation is observed for (Rb0.5Cs0.5)2SnCl6 (78% to 85%) compared to other defect perovskite materials even after 120 min irradiation. The increase in photocatalytic efficiency of (Rb0.5Cs0.5)2SnCl6 is due to strong absorption of light, large separation of electron–holes pairs and the size of the nanoparticles. Also, the radical trapping experiment showed that the super oxide radicals (.O2−) and photo-generated holes (h+) were the predominant active species in the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye process. This study investigated the electrical and stability characteristics of Al2O3 as a gate insulator, which was deposited by various atomic layer deposition methods in top-gate staggered amorphous InGaZnO (a-IGZO) thin film transistors. A trimethylaluminum precursor was used as an Al source, and H2O gas (H2O device) and O2 plasma with a long plasma time (O2 LP device) and a short plasma time (O2 SP device) were used as oxidants. The initial electrical characteristics, including the hysteresis, on–off current ratio, and subthreshold swing, were superior in the H2O device compared to the O2 LP and O2 SP devices. In the positive bias stress (PBS) results, the degradation characteristics showed a tendency similar to the transfer properties. However, under the negative bias illumination stress (NBIS), the stability of the H2O device was significantly reduced compared to the O2 LP and O2 SP devices. In this paper, the mechanism of instability, which has opposite results in terms of the PBS and NBIS for the three devices, was identified using capacitance–voltage, three-terminal charge pumping as electrical analysis techniques and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) as a physical analysis technique. It was confirmed that the surface oxidation of a-IGZO deteriorates the interfacial properties, causing the transfer characteristics to degrade. The carbon of the Al2O3 film identified via SIMS analysis acts as a trap layer, causing deterioration in the PBS. Alternatively, in the NBIS, it was observed that the carbon acts as a capture site for photo-excited holes, thereby promoting device stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The released NOx during fuel combustion is one of the major air pollutants, directly related to acid rain and photochemical smog. At present, there is not an economical and effective method of inhibiting NOx emission from sintering flue gas. Therefore, controlling the conditions of fuel combustion is extremely required for the reduction in NOx. The current research investigated the effects of different combustion parameters on the formation of NOx for three type of coals. The formation of NOx decreased with increasing temperature and heating rate while it increased when oxygen content in an atmosphere increased. Anthracite coal replacement with coke up to 100 pct promoted a decrease in the formed NOx amount and XNO by 21 and 53 pct, respectively. The addition of CaO and FeO enhanced the conversion of nitrogen to NOx, especially at temperatures below 1273 K (1000 °C). Taking both the oxidation reaction to form NOx and reduction reaction of NOx to form N2 into account, the activation energy (EA) values of anthracite and coke were evaluated to be 2.2 and 3.6 kJ/mol, respectively. The combustion of semi-anthracite coal emitted the largest amount of NOx, but the anthracite coal containing less fuel-N than other coals showed the highest value of XNO, which indicates that nitrogen content in coal is not the major factor affecting the formation of NOx. The change in nitrogen functionality after combustion process might be the reason for the unpredicted results in the XNO. The pyrrolic-N in anthracite coal might be considered to be the major functional form that directly affects the conversion of nitrogen to NO. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Relatively little is known about what motivates or prevents patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) from adopting physically active lifestyles. This study aimed to evaluate the levels of physical activity and to identify the factors affecting a physically active lifestyle among Korean patients with RA. In this cross-sectional study, data were collected from a rheumatology outpatient clinic of a university-affiliated hospital in South Korea. The levels of physical activity were self-reported using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Participants who engaged in more than 600 metabolic equivalent task-minutes/week of physical activity and moderate activity or walking at least three times per week were considered physically active in this study. Structured questionnaires were used to assess perceived barriers and self-efficacy for exercise. Of 345 patients with RA included in this study, about 22% of patients were classified as physically active. Factors associated with a physically active lifestyle were good physical function (odds ratio [OR] = 0.56; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.36–0.87) and high levels of exercise self-efficacy (OR = 1.36; 95% CI: 1.20–1.54). Common barriers identified were fatigue, interference with other responsibilities, and a lack of time. Participants showed the lowest self-efficacy for exercise when they had pain and were busy with other activities. The level of physical function and exercise self-efficacy were predictors of physical activity. Individualized physical activity programs tailored to personal abilities and barriers and increasing exercise self-efficacy are needed to facilitate engagement of physical activity in Korean patients with RA. There is evidence that the cognitive system processes human faces faster and more precisely than other stimuli. Also, faces summon visual attention in an automatic manner, as evidenced by efficient, 'pop-out' search for face targets amongst homogeneous non-face distractors. Pop-out for faces implies that faces are processed as a basic visual 'feature' by specialized face-tuned detectors, similar to the coding of other features (e.g., color, orientation, motion, etc.). However, it is unclear whether such face detectors encode only the global face configuration or both global and local face features. If the former were correct, the face detectors should be unable to support search for a local face feature, rendering search slower relative to non-face stimuli; that is, there would be local feature suppression (LFS) for faces. If the latter was the case, there should be no difference in the processing of local and, respectively, global face features. In two experiments, participants discerned the presence (vs. absence) of a local target defined as a part of either a normal or a scrambled (schematic or realistic) face or of a non-face (Kanizsa diamond or realistic house) configuration. The results consistently showed a robust LFS effect in both reaction times and error rates for face stimuli, and either no difference or even a local feature enhancement effect for the control stimuli. Genomic instability is one of the representative causes in genetic disorder, where the proper cellular response to DNA damage is essential in maintaining genomic stability. ATM and the Mre11-Rad50-Nbs1 (MRN) complex play critical roles in the cellular response to DNA damage such as DNA double-strand break (DSB). In this study, we report that Smad7 is indispensible in DNA damage response as a novel component of MRN complex. Smad7 enhances cell survival against DNA damage by accelerating ATM dependent DNA repair signaling. In Smad7-deficient mouse embryonic fibroblast cells, the loss of Smad7 decreases ATM activation and inhibits recruitment of ATM to the sites of DSBs. Smad7 interacts with Nbs1, a member of MRN complex, and enhances the interaction between ATM and Nbs1 upon DNA damage response, leading to phosphorylation of downstream substrates. Ectopic expression of Smad7 in the skin of mice enhances the phosphorylation of ATM upon X-irradiation. We found that effect of Smad7 on enhancing DNA repair is independent of its inhibitory activity of TGF-β signaling. Taken together, our results highlight a critical function of Smad7 in DSB response and establish the novel mechanism in which Smad7 facilitates the recruitment of ATM to the MRN complex through direct interaction with Nbs1. This paper endeavors to enrich the existing knowledge acquisition literatures by specifically highlighting downsides of external ties of individuals. We introduce the concept of reverse knowledge diffusion (RKD) through external ties of individuals, and develop theoretical propositions to explain how the risks of RKD vary based on competitive dynamics and status of firms as innovation market leaders or market followers. We develop the construct of RKD to help explain why rivals may pursue contrasting knowledge seeking strategies with regards to leverage external ties of individuals, the timing of establishing these ties, and ex ante control mechanisms designed to regulate these relationships. We investigate how the second-order learning process moderates the relationship between innovation performance and two types of knowledge seeking behavior, namely exploration and exploitation. We reinvestigate the second-order learning process of the top 100 Korean firms from 1997 to 2007 by capturing CEO turnover, board turnover, and R&D alliances. We argue that the current findings about exploration and exploitation should be reclassified in terms of innovation input and output. We suggest that researchers investigate the organizational learning process to understand the link between innovation inputs and outputs. Our empirical results show that while innovation inputs are not related to exploratory outputs, the second-order learning process reshapes the relationship between both exploration/exploitation type innovation inputs and exploratory innovation outputs, and that the new focus of organizational learning process can refine current innovation literature. This paper reports smart wireless sensor node for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) that is capable of operation with energy harvesting systems using piezoelectric materials. A large amount of research has focused on utilizing the impedance method for structural health monitoring but these studies required expensive and bulky impedance analyzers, which are unsuitable for field deployment. Piezoelectric materials can be used as mechanisms to transfer ambient vibrations into electrical energy that can be stored and used to power other devices. In this study, three types of piezoelectric materials were evaluated experimentally for use as power harvesting devices. In general, the power produced by the vibrations of piezoelectric devices is low, meaning that the equipment powered by the device cannot be operated effectively. Therefore, a time delay circuit and reset IC chip was used to improve the efficiency of the electrical power generated. This paper describes a useful means of noninvasively enhancing transdermal delivery efficiency. For this, chitosan nanocapsules with positive surface charges were fabricated by using the in situ precipitation method. These nanocapsules cannot only have an ability to encapsulate the drug molecule (this study used riboflavin 5′-monophosphate), but also electrotatically interact with the stratum corneum layer. To demonstrate this, fluorescence-labeled polymer nanoparticles with different particle sizes as well as surface charges were topically applied onto the skin and their distribution was directly imaged. This demonstration experiment allowed us to figure out that once the nanocapsules were provided with positive surface charges, they readily deposited into the stratum corneum layer due to the electrostatic interaction. Further quantitative characterization of the penetrating amount of riboflavin 5′-monophosphate by using the Frantz diffusion cell method showed that our chitosan nanocapsule system effectively improved transdermal delivery efficiency. We demonstrated an effective poly(p-chloro-xylylene) (Parylene-C) encapsulation method for MAPbI3 solar cells. By structural and optical analysis, we confirmed that Parylene-C efficiently slowed the decomposition reaction in MAPbI3. From a water permeability test with different encapsulating materials, we found that Parylene-C-coated MAPbI3 perovskite was successfully passivated from reaction with water, owing to the hydrophobic behavior of Parylene-C. Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) oftentimes develop olfactory dysfunction in their early stages, converting the nasal environment into a useful source of potential biomarkers. Here we determined the possible application of nasal fluid cells for PD biomarker identification. Thirty PD patients and 13 age-matched healthy controls were enrolled in this study. Messenger RNA levels of selected PD-related genes were monitored through real-time quantitative PCR. Target gene transcripts can be efficiently amplified from the cDNA library from human nasal fluid cell pellets. And subsequent analysis showed both a marked downregulation of parkin transcripts and an upregulation of AIMP2 in PD patients when compared to controls (cutoff value = 1.753 for with 84.2% sensitivity and 84.6% specificity; 0.359 for parkin with 76.7% sensitivity and 76.9 specificity). Moreover, alteration pattern of parkin and AIMP2 in PD was distinct from another neurodegenerative disease, multiple system atrophy. Analysis in both the early and late stages of PD cases reported that parkin levels inversely correlated with PD stages. Our results validate the practical value of easily accessible nasal fluid cells and the utility of both AIMP2 and parkin as potential biomarkers for PD diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We fabricated the stacked bilayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) by using reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as a spacer for increasing the optoelectronic properties of MoS2. The rGO can decrease the interlayer coupling between the stacked bilayer MoS2 and retain the direct band gap property of MoS2. We observed a twofold enhancement of the photoluminescence intensity of the stacked MoS2 bilayer. In the Raman scattering, we observed that the E12g and A1g modes of the stacked bilayer MoS2 with rGO were further shifted compared to monolayer MoS2, which is due to the van der Waals (vdW) interaction and the strain effect between the MoS2 and rGO layers. The findings of this study will expand the applicability of monolayer MoS2 for high-performance optoelectronic devices by enhancing the optical properties using a vdW spacer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We synthesized multiple-cation Rb(MAFA)PbI3 perovskite single crystals for the first time. The effect of Rb+ substitution was systemically investigated, and the addition of 1.5 M 5% RbI was the optimum condition to obtain high-quality Rb(MAFA)PbI3 single crystals. Lattice shrinkage occurred in the Rb(MAFA)PbI3 single crystal because of the small ionic radius of Rb+, resulting in blue-shifted absorption and photoluminescence (PL) peaks. The 1.5 M 5% RbI-added (MAFA)PbI3 single crystal showed the longest carrier lifetime of 18.35 ns, exhibiting the highest photoresponse than other crystals.
