We study the symmetric central configurations of the (1+3)-body problem, where three bodies (called satellites) are infinitesimal and the remaining one body is dominant. For this problem, in 2011, Corbera et al. (Celest Mech Dyn Astron 109:27–43, 2011) obtained the bifurcation value of mass parameter at which the number of central configurations changes by variables substitution and resultant theory. In this work, by qualitative analysis, we prove the sufficient and necessary conditions for producing the bifurcation value of mass parameter and figure out this value. Flexible strain sensors with high sensitivity, wide detection range, and low detection limit have continuously attracted great interest due to their tremendous application potential in areas such as health/medical-care, human—machine interface, as well as safety and security. While both of a high sensitivity and a wide working range are desired key parameters for a strain sensor, they are usually contrary to each other to be achieved on the same sensor due to the tightly structure dependence of both of them. Here, a flexible strain sensor with both high sensitivity and wide strain detection range is prepared based on the design of an integrated membrane containing both of parallel aligned and randomly aligned carbon nanofibers (CNFs). The parallel aligned CNF membrane (p-CNF) exhibits a low strain detection limit and high sensitivity, while the random aligned CNF membrane (r-CNF) exhibits a large strain detection range. Taking the advantages of both p-CNF and r-CNF, the strain sensor with stacked p-CNF and r-CNF (p/r-CNF) exhibits both high sensitivity and wide working range. Its gauge factor (GF) is 1,272 for strains under 0.5% and 2,266 for strain from 70% to 100%. At the same time, it can work in a wide strain range of 0.005% to 100%, fulfilling the requirements for accurately detecting full-range human motions. We demonstrated its applications in the recognition of facial expressions and joint movements. Furtherly, we constructed an intelligent lip-language recognition system, which can accurately track phonetic symbols and may help people with language disabilities, proving the potential of this strain sensor in health management and medical assistance. The application of organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells to drive off-grid microelectronic devices under indoor light has attracted broad attention. As organic semiconductors intrinsically have less ordered intermolecular packing than inorganic materials, the relatively larger energetic disorder is one of the main results that limit the photovoltaic efficiency of the OPV cells at low carrier density. Here, we optimize the alkyl chains of non-fullerene acceptors to get suppressed energetic disorder. We find the optimal acceptor DTz-R1 with the shortest alkyl chain has the strongest crystalline property and lowest energetic disorder. As a result, over 26% efficiency is recorded for the 1 cm2 OPV cells under a light-emitting diode illumination of 500 lux. We also fabricate a 100 cm2 cell device and get a PCE of 23.0%, which is an outstanding value for large-area OPV cells. These results suggest that modulation of the energetic disorder is of great importance for further improving the efficiency of OPV cells, especially for indoor applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Malaria is a climate-sensitive infectious disease. Many ecological studies have investigated the independent impacts of ambient temperature on malaria. However, the optimal temperature measures of malaria and its interaction with other meteorological factors on malaria transmission are less understood. This study aims to investigate the effect of ambient temperature and its interactions with relative humidity and rainfall on malaria in Suzhou, a temperate climate city in Anhui Province, China. Weekly malaria and meteorological data from 2005 to 2012 were obtained for Suzhou. A distributed lag nonlinear model was conducted to quantify the effect of different temperature measures on malaria. The best measure was defined as that with the minimum quasi-Akaike information criterion. GeoDetector and Poisson regression models were employed to quantify the interactions of temperature, relative humidity, and rainfall on malaria transmission. A total of 13,382 malaria cases were notified in Suzhou from 2005 to 2012. Each 5 °C rise in average temperature over 10 °C resulted in a 22% (95% CI: 17%, 28%) increase in malaria cases at lag of 4 weeks. In terms of cumulative effects from lag 1 to 8 weeks, each 5 °C increase over 10 °C caused a 175% growth in malaria cases (95% CI: 139%, 216%). Average temperature achieved the best performance in terms of model fitting, followed by minimum temperature, most frequent temperature, and maximum temperature. Temperature had an interactive effect on malaria with relative humidity and rainfall. High temperature together with high relative humidity and high rainfall could accelerate the transmission of malaria. Meteorological factors may affect malaria transmission interactively. The research findings could be helpful in the development of weather-based malaria early warning system, especially in the context of climate change for the prevention of possible malaria resurgence. Few studies have examined the attributable fraction (AF) of temperature to mortality and Years of Life Lost (YLL), especially in developing countries. This study aims to explore the short-term effect of the cold and hot temperatures on the cause-specific YLL and mortality, discover the attributable contributions from the temperature variations, and identify the vulnerable populations in Weifang, China. Daily registered death information and meteorological data over the period 2010–2016 were obtained in Weifang, a northern Chinese city. Generalized additive Poisson and Gaussian regression models were used to assess the impacts of temperatures on both mortality and YLL, explore the AF of the temperature variations on mortality, after adjusting for other covariates. Both hot and cold temperatures have had significant negative impacts on cause-specific mortality counts and YLL, with heat presented an acute and short effect and the cold temperatures had delayed effects and lasted for several days. In terms of the attributable fraction calculations, the contributions from cold effects was higher than that of hot effects on non-accidental, cardiovascular, and respiratory deaths (YLL 10.88 vs. 1.23%, 19.58 vs. 1.71%, and 14.47 vs. 3.05%; mortality 13.97 vs. 1.65%, 19.20 vs. 1.59%, and 14.89 vs. 3.09%), respectively. The elderly and women and people with low education level were the most vulnerable. The findings will provide important scientific evidences and policy implications for developing adaptation strategies to reduce the adverse effect of cold and hot exposure in Weifang, in terms of resource allocation, healthcare workforce capacity building, and community health education, especially for the vulnerable groups. The excess heat factor (EHF) is being adopted nationally for heatwave forecasting in Australia, but there is limited research utilizing it as a predictor for heat-related morbidity from diseases of the urinary system (urinary diseases). In this study, the incidence of eight temperature-prone specific urinary disease categories was analyzed in relation to the EHF. Daily data for maximum and minimum temperature and data for metropolitan hospital emergency department presentations and inpatient admissions for urinary disease were acquired in Adelaide, South Australia, from 1 July 2003 to 31 March 2014. An increased incidence for urolithiasis, acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease, and lower urinary tract infections was associated with the EHF. Using the Australian national heatwave definition with the EHF, emergency department presentations increased on heatwave days compared to non-heatwave days for total urinary disease (IRR 1.046, 95% CI 1.016–1.076), urolithiasis (IRR 1.106, 95% 1.046–1.169), and acute kidney injury (AKI) (IRR 1.416, 95% CI 1.258–1.594). Likewise, inpatient admissions increased for total urinary disease (IRR 1.090, 95% CI 1.048–1.133) and AKI (IRR 1.335, 95% CI 1.204–1.480). The EHF is a reliable metric for predicting heat-induced morbidity from urinary disease. Climate change-related elevations in temperature can increase morbidity from urinary disease, especially AKI and urolithiasis. Purpose: Heatwaves, or extended periods of extreme heat, are predicted to increase in frequency, intensity and duration with climate change, but their impact on occupational injury has not been extensively studied. We examined the relationship between heatwaves of varying severity and work-related injuries and illnesses. We used a newly proposed metric of heatwave severity, the Excess Heat Factor (EHF), which accounts for local climate characteristics and acclimatization and compared it with heatwaves defined by daily maximum temperature.Methods: Work-related injuries and illnesses were identified from two administrative data sources: workers' compensation claims and work-related ambulance call-outs for the years 2003-2013 in Adelaide, Australia. The EHF metrics were obtained from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. A time-stratified case-crossover regression model was used to examine associations between heatwaves of three levels of severity, workers' compensation claims, and work-related ambulance call-outs.Results: There was an increase in work-related ambulance call-outs and compensation claims during low and moderately severe heatwaves as defined using the EHF, and a non-significant decline during high-severity heatwaves. Positive associations were observed during moderate heatwaves in compensation claims made by new workers (RR 1.31, 95% CI 1.10-1.55), workers in medium-sized enterprises (RR 1.15, 95% CI 1.01-1.30), indoor industries (RR 1.09, 95% CI 1.01-1.17), males (RR 1.13, 95% CI 1.03-1.23) and laborers (RR 1.21, 95% CI 1.04-1.39).Conclusions: Workers should adopt appropriate precautions during moderately severe heatwaves, when the risks of work-related injuries and illnesses are increased. Heatwaves can be a common occurrence in Australia, and the public health impacts can be severe. Heat warnings and interventions are being adopted widely to reduce the preventable health impacts. This study examines the effects of heatwaves on morbidity and mortality in different climatic regions in the state of South Australia, to inform the targeting of heat warnings according to regional needs. Heatwaves were defined using the excess heat factor (EHF), an index based on mean daily temperature indices that quantifies heatwave severity relative to the local climate. In all regions, there were increases in morbidity (daily rates of ambulance call-outs and heat-related emergency presentations and hospital admissions) on heatwave days compared to non-heatwave days, which increased with heatwave severity. Atomic scale point defects play important roles in tuning the carrier concentration and ultimately influencing electrical and thermal properties. Herein, we fabricated the ternary SbTeSe alloys to study the intimate relationship of internal point defects and thermoelectric performance. The Se substitution of Te atoms in the SbTe lattice decreased the electrical conductivity from 2.2 × 10 S/m to 6.4 × 10 S/m owing to the reduced holes concentration. The declined point defects, including antisite defects and vacancies in materials, gave rise to the decrease in carrier concentration. The Seebeck coefficient of the ternary SbTeSe exhibited an increase with doping of Se atoms. Simultaneously, the thermal conductivity behaved a fallihg trend as well as increasing Se content. As a result, the ZT value reached the maximum from the corresponding SbTeSe pellet. Positron annihilation measurement revealed that the average positron lifetime showed a monotonic decrease with Se addition, demonstrating the reduced point defects, which was in agreement with the thermoelectric performance. The extreme heat wave in Australia in 2009 resulted in significantly increased number of daily deaths. The circumstances that lead to deaths during extreme heat have not been explored before in Australia. This study aims to identify the individual and community risk factors for deaths during this extreme heat wave in Adelaide. A matched case-control study was conducted. Cases were those who died in the Adelaide metropolitan area during the heat wave period. For each case, two community controls were randomly selected, matched by age and gender. Face-to-face or telephone interviews were conducted to collect data of demographic information, living environment, social support, health status and behavioural changes during the heat wave. Descriptive analysis, as well as simple and multiple conditional logistic regressions were performed. In total, 82 deaths and 164 matched community controls were included in the analysis, with a median age of 77.5 (range 26.6-100.7). The multiple logistic regression model indicated that, compared with controls, the risk of death during the heat wave was significantly increased for people living alone (AOR = 42.31, 95 % CI 2.3, 792.8) or having existing chronic heart disease (AOR = 22.4, 95 % CI 1.7, 303.0). In addition, having air conditioning in bedrooms (AOR = 0.004, 95 % CI 0.00006, 0.28) and participating in social activities more than once a week (AOR = 0.011, 95 % CI 0.0004, 0.29) indicated significant protective effects. We have identified factors that could significantly impact on the likelihood of deaths during heat waves. Exposure to extreme heat is a familiar seasonal experience for many rural communities across Australia, which is projected to increase in frequency and intensity with climate change. This has wide-ranging implications for community health and well-being, livelihoods, recreation, and the natural and built environments. In this study, we have examined how rural and remote communities in South Australia experience and respond to extreme heat, and how this is influenced by physical, social and psychological aspects of place. Interviews with participants across different climatic regions of South Australia were analysed using a broad thematic framework that included physical aspects of place, human activities, social and community aspects, and relationships with place; providing a descriptive account of heat impacts and responses. We further suggest that some narratives expressed the construction of a rural or remote identity, with climate being a part of this relationship; suggesting that place identity may be a subjective aspect underpinning appraisals of extreme heat. We reported a simple hydrothermal method to fabricate Au nanoparticles-decorated ZnO nanorods (ZnO-NRs) using aligned ZnO-NRs arrays as a template. Via changing the concentration of HAuCl aqueous solution, the size and density of Au nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of ZnO-NRs could be readily tuned. The photoluminescence of Au-NPs decorated ZnO-NRs were investigated, in order to optimize the configuration of the Au-NPs decorated ZnO-NRs system realizing the maximum band emission. Due to a synergistic effect of the adjacent Au NPs and ZnO-NRs and efficiently coupled localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) excitation, an optimized sample employing Au NPs with 15-nm size showed best catalytic efficiency. We have proposed a mechanism that is the electron transfer from surface-plasmon-stimulated \Au NPs to the conduction band of ZnO-NRs. These results demonstrate that Au NPs can significantly enhance the charge separation by extracting electrons from the photoexcited ZnO and consequently improve the photocatalytic activity of the composites. A novel nano-Sn particle/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)/poly(vinyl alcohol) core-shell hierarchical composite (nano-Sn/PEDOT:PSS/PVA CSHC) was fabricated for the first time and evaluated as a high-performance anode material in lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The core-shell hierarchical structure of the composite was revealed by field-emission scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope; the components of the composite were investigated by X-ray diffraction and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy; the nano-Sn particle content in the composite was obtained by thermogravimetric analysis and the electrochemical performance was studied by galvanostatic charge/discharge cycling tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. When used as LIB anode material, the nano-Sn/PEDOT:PSS/PVA CSHC electrode exhibited high reversible capacity (568 mA h g after 100 charge/discharge cycles at a current density of 100 mA g), superior cycling stability (capacity retention of 66.0 % after 100 cycles), good rate performance (143 mA h g at 1500 mA g) and low charge transfer resistance compared to pristine nano-Sn particle and nano-Sn/PEDOT:PSS composite electrodes. The improved electrochemical performance can be attributed to the core-shell hierarchical structure. The results show that the nano-Sn/PEDOT:PSS/PVA CSHC is a promising anode candidate for next-generation LIBs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nanostructured hollow Sn-Cu multi-phase composite nanoparticles anode that contains Sn and CuSn was synthesized via galvanic replacement reaction using Sn nanoparticles as a sacrificial template. The sacrificial oxidation of Sn and simultaneous reduction of Cu on the surface because of the redox potential difference is proposed to account for the formation of hollow Sn-Cu nanostructures. The structural evolution of the Sn-Cu hollow nanoparticle, in the process of galvanic replacement and structure, composition changes during charge/discharge processes were studied based on scanning electron microscope, X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy investigations. The electrochemical properties of the samples were evaluated by galvanostatic discharge-charge cycling, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Compared with solid Sn-Cu nanoparticles, hollow Sn-Cu nanoparticles showed better capacity retention. The improved electrochemical performance may be attributed to the stable hollow structure and the combination of CuSn. The facile solution-based process and excellent cycling stability show great potential of the multi-phase Sn-Cu hollow composite nanoparticles as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries. Record breaking heat waves have been recorded in Adelaide, Australia in recent years and climate change would likely increase the frequency, duration and severity of heat waves. This paper describes the governance and institutional arrangements during the development of an adaptation strategy (herein referred to as heat-health policy) for heat waves in Adelaide, Australia. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted between June and August 2011 among 18 stakeholders who were involved in the participatory process during the development of the heat-health policy. Informed consent was obtained and interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and the data analysed using framework analysis. Interview data were supplemented by data gathered through a review of documents associated with the process. The results found that the process of developing the heat-health policy was initiated by the state government and comprised of stakeholders from both the state and non-state sectors. There was a high level of leadership and political commitment demonstrated during the process, given that the different players wanted a policy to be in place before any future heat wave. A Steering Committee was established that provided coordination and oversight in addition to the Emergency Management Act within the state which provided the legislative framework during the heat-health policy development process. Although the decision-making authority was controlled by a controlled by a public institution, to a larger extent, there was collaborative decision-making by virtue of the context in which the heat-health policy was developed. An assurance mechanism established during the process was among the factors that ensured accountability during the participatory process. Overall, the development of the heat-health policy in Adelaide was largely successful, attributed to the extent of political commitment from the state government and the sound institutional and legislative framework that facilitated the process. Good governance and institutional arrangements provide the enabling environment, the structures, systems and resources that would facilitate the development of adaptation strategies such as heat-health policies. Objective: To gain further understanding of the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Methods: Analysing clinical and laboratory data on ten cases of APS. Results: Thrombocytopenia appeared in all cases. Venous thrombi of limbs appeared in five cases and neurological abnormalities in two cases. Renal impairments were found in three cases. One case manifested left renal venous thrombi and the other two cases thrombotic microangiopathy. Budd-Chiari syndrome was found in one case. One of the ten cases was catastrophic APS (CAPS) presented as acute diffuse swelling, cyanosis, pain, ischemia and necrosis in fingers and limbs, recurrent shock, ascites, hepatic and respiratory dysfunction. Anticoagulants and corticosteroids could be effective foctive for dealing with APS. It was critical to treat catastrophic APS with anticoagulants or plasmapheresis as early as possible. Conclusion: APS shows variable manifestations for good prognosis, but catastrophic APS has fatal risk. The main treatment for APS is the use of anticoagulants and immunosuppressives. Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide receptor (VIP1R) is a widely expressed class B G protein-coupled receptor and a drug target for the treatment of neuronal, metabolic, and inflammatory diseases. However, our understanding of its mechanism of action and the potential of drug discovery targeting this receptor is limited by the lack of structural information of VIP1R. Here we report a cryo-electron microscopy structure of human VIP1R bound to PACAP27 and Gs heterotrimer, whose complex assembly is stabilized by a NanoBiT tethering strategy. Comparison with other class B GPCR structures reveals that PACAP27 engages VIP1R with its N-terminus inserting into the ligand binding pocket at the transmembrane bundle of the receptor, which subsequently couples to the G protein in a receptor-specific manner. This structure has provided insights into the molecular basis of PACAP27 binding and VIP receptor activation. The methodology of the NanoBiT tethering may help to provide structural information of unstable complexes.
