Recent advancements in the industrial revolution and artificial intelligence have aided in the development of novel approaches that have considerable potential for increasing the efficiency of traffic networks. Emerging concepts of autonomous driving and machine learning can be incorporated intelligently for improving traffic operations and control. In the coming years, traffic composition can vary in terms of autonomous vehicle (AV) penetration rate, which can lead to a heterogeneous traffic environment. Traffic control methods for such complex networks need to be designed effectively for accommodating the positive effects of AV implementation without compromising the safety and level of service in the presence of regular vehicles (RVs). An intelligent-based optimization framework for traffic signal control under heterogeneous AV-based traffic is proposed in this paper. This framework utilizes state-of-the-art machine-learning approaches to represent and design different components of the optimization process of cycle length. Further, SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) is used to enhance model interpretability. The proposed optimization framework improves performance under congested traffic conditions compared with that of the conventional optimization methods. Compared to pure RV-based traffic, the penetration rates of 25%, 50%, and 100% can decrease optimized cycle lengths by 26%, 39%, and 53%, respectively, which can result in delay reductions of approximately 18%, 31%, and 56%, respectively. The proposed framework when applied in an adaptive-based manner can help in the generalization of controlling existing signalized intersections with the gradual penetration of AVs without the extra infrastructure or specific operational and connectivity capabilities of the involved vehicles. Traffic congestion has several adverse effects on urban traffic networks. Increased travel times of vehicles, with the addition of excessive greenhouse emissions, can be listed as harmful effects. To address these issues, transportation engineers aim to reduce private car usage, reduce travel times through different control strategies, and mitigate harmful effects on urban networks. In this study, we introduce an innovative approach to optimizing traffic signal control settings. This methodology takes into account both pedestrian delays and vehicular emissions. Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II and Multi-objective Artificial Bee Colony algorithms are adopted to solve the multi-objective optimization problem. The vehicular emissions are modeled through the MOVES3 emission model and integrated into the utilized microsimulation environment. Initially, the proposed framework is tested on a hypothetical test network, followed by a real-world case study. Results indicate a significant improvement in pedestrian delays and lower emissions. In recent years, the problem of traffic congestion has become increasingly serious, and research on traffic system control has become a new hotspot. Studying the bifurcation characteristics of traffic flow systems and designing control schemes for unstable support points can alleviate traffic congestion from a new perspective. This article improves the full speed differential model considering strong wind models from the perspective of bifurcation control to adjust traffic flow. This article theoretically proves the existence conditions of Hopf bifurcation and saddle node bifurcation in the model and finds the stability mutation point of the transportation system stability. A nonlinear system feedback controller was designed for unstable bifurcation points using Chebyshev polynomial approximation and random feedback control methods. Without changing the system equilibrium point, the advance, delay, and elimination of Hopf bifurcation were achieved, and the abrupt behavior of the transportation system was controlled, thereby alleviating traffic congestion. This article explains the changes in the stability of complex transportation systems from the perspective of bifurcation analysis, which can better capture the characteristics of traffic flow. By adjusting the control parameters in the feedback controller, the influence of boundary conditions on the stability of the transportation system is fully described, and the influence of unstable focal points and saddle points on the system is suppressed, thereby slowing down the traffic flow. In addition, unstable bifurcation points can be eliminated, and the Hopf bifurcation can be controlled to advance, delay, and disappear, thereby achieving control over the stable behavior of the transportation system. Traveling demand increased rapidly on the roads of big cities. Traffic congestion is observed on a regular basis and causes serious problems for citizens. In this study, a traffic queue model is employed to simulate traffic parameters for optimization purposes. The primary objective is to enhance the average queue length, cumulative delay, and cumulative reward for varying numbers of vehicles generated using an innovative approach. The proposed methodology integrates deep Reinforcement Q-Learning techniques implemented through a realistic simulator, Simulation of Urban MObility, based on OpenStreetMap. This simulator is used to balance the flow of traffic by monitoring traffic conditions and adjusting signals (Red/Yellow/Green) accordingly. The research extensively evaluates simulation outcomes across different scenarios involving 50, 100, 500, and 1000 vehicles, with episodes 10, 50 and 100. The results provide valuable insights into training times, simulation durations, and total rewards obtained, indicating improvements in mitigating traffic congestion. The introduction of a traffic control strategy enhances model effectiveness through the utilization of four-layer deep neural network architectures with 400 neurons in hidden layers. However, the study also highlights persistent challenges related to real-time implementation and complexities in state-action-agent relationships. Traffic light optimization is known to be a cost-effective method for reducing congestion and energy consumption in urban areas without changing physical road infrastructure. However, due to the high installation and maintenance costs of vehicle detectors, most intersections are controlled by fixed-time traffic signals that are not regularly optimized. To alleviate traffic congestion at intersections, we present a large-scale traffic signal re-timing system that uses a small percentage of vehicle trajectories as the only input without reliance on any detectors. We develop the probabilistic time-space diagram, which establishes the connection between a stochastic point-queue model and vehicle trajectories under the proposed Newellian coordinates. This model enables us to reconstruct the recurrent spatial-temporal traffic state by aggregating sufficient historical data. Optimization algorithms are then developed to update traffic signal parameters for intersections with optimality gaps. A real-world citywide test of the system was conducted in Birmingham, Michigan, and demonstrated that it decreased the delay and number of stops at signalized intersections by up to 20% and 30%, respectively. This system provides a scalable, sustainable, and efficient solution to traffic light optimization and can potentially be applied to every fixed-time signalized intersection in the world. The alleviation of traffic congestion relies on efficient traffic control and traffic guidance, which are based on real-time short-term traffic flow prediction. In this paper, the stacked autoencoder (SAE) deep learning model with powerful feature learning capability is selected to predict the traffic flow on road sections. The process of training SAE includes the pre-training phase and the fine-tuning phase, which mainly apply the BP algorithm. However, the process of training SAE is time-consuming and cannot meet the real-time performance of modern application systems. This paper proposes a parallel training strategy for the SAE prediction model based on data parallel mode. The gradient solution process in our algorithm satisfies the conditions of parallel computing, so the training process can be designed in a parallel manner. The original dataset is distributed to some computing nodes, which are work nodes. The work node is responsible for gradient calculation using the local data. The task of the sole master node is to synthesize the gradient calculation results and then broadcast the updated gradient to each work node. The simulation results show that the SAE-based prediction model achieves better results than the traditional model, and the parallel algorithm reduces the running time of training processes. The research of traffic congestion control has been developed rapidly in recent years. Researching the bifurcation characteristics of traffic flow and designing control schemes for unstable bifurcation points can provide some new methods for relieving the traffic congestion. In this paper, we study the bifurcation characteristics and nonlinear control of traffic flow based on the continuum model considering the new energy vehicles effect. First, a macroscopic traffic flow model considering the number of new energy vehicles and their range is proposed. Then, we transform it into a traffic flow stability model suitable for branching analysis using the traveling wave transformation. Therefore, we can transform the traffic flow problem into the stability analysis problem of systems and reflect unstable traffic characteristics such as congestion. Based on the stability model, the existence conditions of the Hopf bifurcation are proved and some bifurcation points of the traffic system are found. Second, we study the congestion and stability abrupt change behaviors near the equilibrium point and branching point to seek for the formation mechanism of traffic congestion. Finally, for the unstable bifurcation point, the control scheme is designed by Chebyshev polynomial approximation, stochastic feedback control, and other methods to delay or disappear the unstable bifurcation point and alleviate traffic congestion. Traffic congestion not only has a great impact on people's travel, but also increases energy consumption and air pollution. The control analysis of the macroscopic traffic flow model considering the vehicle braking effect is particularly important, reflecting the impact on the actual traffic flow density wave, so as to better solve the actual traffic problems. In this paper, based on a speed difference optimization speed model, the micro–macro-variables are transformed into a high-order continuous traffic flow model. Then, a random function considering the physical correlation of random components is added to the high-order continuous traffic flow model to establish a random traffic flow model that can reflect the uncertain behavior of traffic flow acceleration or deceleration. Based on this stochastic traffic model, the existence of Hopf bifurcation and bifurcation control of the traffic flow system model considering stochastic characteristics are derived by using Hopf bifurcation theorem. By Chebyshev polynomial approximation method, the stochastic problem of the system is transformed into the bifurcation control problem of its equivalent deterministic system. A feedback controller is designed to delay the occurrence of Hopf bifurcation and control the amplitude of the limit cycle. Without changing the equilibrium point of the system, the complete elimination of Hopf bifurcation can be achieved by controlling the amplitude of the limit cycle. That is, the feedback controller is used to modify the bifurcation characteristics of the system, such as the bifurcation appearing at the equilibrium point in the control system moves forward, moves backward or disappears, so as to achieve the effect of preventing or alleviating traffic congestion. In the process of collecting traffic information, traditional traffic flow control methods have some problems, such as high loss rate of sensing and detection information and long average queue length, which lead to the unsatisfactory effect of traffic control and evacuation in main roads. Therefore, based on multi-sensor information fusion technology, this study designs a new intelligent control method of traffic flow on main road. According to the multi-sensor information, the fusion algorithm and measurement equation are designed to obtain the main road traffic sensor position, vehicle linear velocity and other parameters, and update the fusion results in real time. Then, the short-term characteristics of traffic flow are used to control the appearance time of target section. Based on the ordinary differential equation, the main road traffic network is represented by intelligent directed graph, and the intelligent dredging model of urban main road traffic flow is constructed. The simulation results show that in five experimental roads, the average delay time of this method is less than 35 s, the maximum average number of stops is only 8.8, the average queue length is less than 30 m, the average travel speed is more than 25 km/h, the traffic flow per unit time is more than 250veh/10 min, and the traffic congestion index of main road is always more than 5.5. Traffic congestion is a major concern in urban centers, as it can affect society, the environment, and the economy. There are many studies on the use of computational intelligence (CI) to improve mobility in urban centers. Some of these researches focus on developing strategies for traffic light programming, since traffic coordination is complex due to its many parameters, variables, and dynamic behavior, and also an inefficient traffic control plan can lead to increased delays and contribute to traffic congestion. Although there are many works in the literature on strategies for traffic control, there are still some contributions and gaps to be filled, especially because some studies do not consider the automatic optimization of traffic signals in real time, that is, according to the demand of vehicles on the roads, considering multiple objectives and the use of a network of intersections in their experiments. In addition, some of the proposed models are not independent of simulation to evaluate the solutions of CI algorithms, resulting in a more complex deployment in real situations. In this context, this paper presents a new method to optimize traffic light plan in a network of intersections and in real time, called Active Control of Traffic Signals (ACTS) associated with the Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm, considering multiple objectives in the optimization process (minimizing the average delay time and the number of vehicles stops per cycle). To test the applicability of the model, a real dataset of vehicle demand collected by the Company of Transport and Traffic of Belo Horizonte (BHTrans) is loaded into the AIMSUN simulator, then the method is applied and compared with the current traffic control plan used by BHTrans. The results show that the ACTS method reduces the average vehicle delay by almost half compared to the results obtained with the current solution used by BHTrans. Smart cities can effectively improve urban life quality. But, with the rise in population size, there is an increase in the use of vehicles for transportation. In smart city development, traffic control and route planning are the primary tasks to address the problem of travel time estimation. It has become complex due to concerns of wrapped spatio-temporal data on dynamic real-time traffic conditions. The existing methods failed to estimate travel time efficiently due to not considering the spatio-temporal features and lack of computing resources. There is a need for a system like intelligent transportation system to monitor and accurately predict traffic flow to avoid traffic congestion and reduce the impact on the ecological system. This paper developed a novel hybrid deep learning model to estimate optimized travel time and possible trajectories. In this work, U-Net used to reduce the number of feature points for each temporal data and GNN is used to build the graph with connectivity between vehicular nodes. This hybrid model helps us predict traffic flow and aims to estimate accurate travel time from one location (node) to another. The model's performance is evaluated on the standard benchmark datasets Q-Traffic, TaxiBJ, and Chengdu. The experimental results show that the proposed framework significantly improves performance in extracting travel patterns and provides an optimal route with an estimated travel time than existing methods with RMSE 4%, MAE 20.49%, and MAPE 18%. The rapid development of urbanization in China has contributed to traffic events, such as traffic accidents and delays. It is difficult to detect and resolve highway traffic congestion in a timely manner using traditional methods because they are slow, require a large number of workers, and require the installation of a large amount of monitoring equipment. Therefore, it is imperative to introduce advanced technology to address these challenges. Recently, deep learning technology has made significant breakthroughs and has been widely applied to various fields with satisfactory results. Deep learning is among the most important technologies for the detection and evaluation of traffic congestion, enabling the accurate detection of the state of the expressway network's traffic congestion, the evaluation of traffic congestion, and the prediction of possible traffic congestion. This enables management to formulate traffic dredging strategies in advance to prevent the negative impact of traffic congestion on normal traffic flow. This paper proposes a framework based on deep learning for next-generation highway traffic management. This framework selects traffic congestion indicators to construct an index model, and then constructs a deep learning model based on self-coding. It predicts and classifies highway traffic environment data and excavates sample data based on the characteristics of traffic parameters. As soon as traffic data were classified, a prediction model based on SoftMax was established to detect and predict highway traffic congestion. We conducted a traffic congestion analysis of the Shanghai expressway network based on the speed performance data obtained from the China Traffic Management Bureau. As a result of their research, we developed an index to measure highway traffic congestion. For traffic control and management organizations to function effectively, it is crucial to have an accurate and clear picture of traffic network operations. We evaluated the proposed framework using data gathered from highway monitoring scenes, and the results indicated that 98.6% of the data could be correctly detected. Using the prediction model based on SoftMax for expressway vehicles during peak hours, the accuracy was 92%, and the misjudgment rate was 8%. This study demonstrates that detecting and evaluating the state of highway traffic environments using deep learning has high accuracy, can be applied to actual highway traffic systems, and is extremely useful for detecting highway congestion. Accurate traffic flow forecasting (TFF) is a prerequisite for urban traffic control and guidance, which has become the key to avoiding traffic congestion and improving traffic management in intelligent transportation systems. To precisely characterize the spatial structure of road networks and discover temporal and spatial characteristics, we propose an attention-based spatial–temporal adaptive dual-graph convolutional network (ASTA-DGCN) for TFF in this paper. Specifically, we employ a spatial–temporal attention module to explore the hidden temporal correlation information of traffic data and the implicit influence of weights among road network nodes and to further capture the dynamic influence of different spatial–temporal positions on the current spatial–temporal position. Then, we utilize an adaptive graph modeling module to automatically extract the one-way relationship between variables and integrate external knowledge into the module. The FastDTW algorithm is exploited to measure the similarity of road network nodes, and the non-Euclidean pairwise association between regions is encoded into graphs to discover the hidden temporal pattern similarity effectively. Furthermore, temporal and spatial correlations are explicitly modeled using dual-graph convolution and sequential convolution based on the obtained graphs to mine the spatial–temporal patterns in dynamic traffic flow, and the final prediction result is produced based on the weighted fusion of the output values of the recent, daily, and weekly components. Finally, the ASTA-DGCN algorithm is successfully applied to TFF on two real-world traffic datasets. Accurate assessment of road conditions can effectively alleviate traffic congestion and guide people's travel plans, traffic control decisions of transportation departments, and formulation of traffic-related laws and regulations. This paper proposes a quantum particle swarm optimization (QPSO) and adaptive hybrid exponential smoothing with residual correction (AHES-RC) for the nonlinearity and randomness of traffic flow. In the proposed algorithm, the single–double-exponential smoothing method is mixed with adaptive weights to form AHES, a new method of mixing weights according to real-time traffic trend changes. After the residual correction of AHES is calculated by the extreme learning machine algorithm, the parameters of AHES-RC are optimized using QPSO to improve the prediction accuracy further. This paper comprehensively compares the QPSO-AHES-RC algorithm with other benchmark models through testing on 26 real-world data sets. The results show that the proposed algorithm can adaptive forecasting under various traffic conditions, yielding the best forecasting performance in terms of various forecast error metrics. Compared with advanced machine learning algorithms such as XGBoost and CatBoost, the mean RMSE and mean MAPE have been improved by over 20% on average. Intelligent traffic light control (ITLC) algorithms are very efficient for relieving traffic congestion. Recently, many decentralized multi-agent traffic light control algorithms are proposed. These researches mainly focus on improving reinforcement learning method and coordination method. But, as all the agents need to communicate while coordinating with each other, the communication details should be improved as well. To guarantee communication effectiveness, two aspect should be considered. Firstly, a traffic condition description method need to be designed. By using this method, traffic condition can be described simply and clearly. Secondly, synchronization should be considered. As different intersections have different cycle lengths and message sending event happens at the end of each traffic signal cycle, every agent will receive messages of other agents at different time. So it is hard for an agent to decide which message is the latest one and the most valuable. Apart from communication details, reinforcement learning algorithm used for traffic signal timing should also be improved. In the traditional reinforcement learning based ITLC algorithms, either queue length of congested cars or waiting time of these cars is considered while calculating reward value. But, both of them are very important. So a new reward calculation method is needed. To solve all these problems, in this paper, a new ITLC algorithm is proposed. To improve communication efficiency, this algorithm adopts a new message sending and processing method. With the enormous growth in the public and private vehicles fleet, traffic congestion is increasing at a very high rate. To deal with this, an intelligent mechanism is required.Therefore, this work proposes a novel Neuro-fuzzy based intelligent traffic light control system, which accounts for vehicle heterogeneity by dynamically generating traffic light phase duration considering the real-time heterogeneous traffic load. For this purpose, the proposed model establishes peer-to-peer connections among neighboring traffic light junctions to fetch the respective real-time traffic conditions and congestion. A fuzzy membership function is utilized to generate an intelligent traffic light phase duration. Further, to obtain an effective fuzzy membership function input value considering real-time heterogeneous traffic scenarios, an adaptive neural network is utilized. The proposed system adopts three execution modes: Congestion Mode (CM), Priority Mode (PM), and Fair Mode (FM). It automatically activates and switches to the best mode based on the live traffic conditions. The performance of the proposed model is evaluated via a realistic simulation on the Gwalior city map of India using an open-source simulator known as Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO). Cooperation between intersections in large-scale road networks is critical in traffic congestion. Currently, most traffic signals cooperate via pre-defined timing phases, which is extremely inefficient in real-time traffic scenarios. Most existing studies on multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) traffic signal control have focused on designing efficient communication methods, but have ignored the importance of how agents interact in cooperative communication. To achieve more efficient cooperation among traffic signals and alleviate urban traffic congestion, this study constructs a Graph Cooperation Q-learning Network Traffic Signal Control (GCQN-TSC) model, which is a graph cooperation network with an embedded self-attention mechanism that enables agents to adjust their attention in real time according to the dynamic traffic flow information, perceive the traffic environment quickly and effectively in a larger range, and help agents achieve more effective collaboration. Moreover, the Deep Graph Q-learning (DGQ) algorithm is proposed in this model to optimize the traffic signal control strategy according to the spatio-temporal characteristics of different traffic scenes and provide the optimal signal phase for each intersection. This study also integrates the ecological traffic concept into MARL traffic signal control, which aims to reduce traffic exhaust emissions. Finally, the proposed GCQN-TSC is experimentally validated both in a synthetic traffic grid and a real-world traffic network using the SUMO simulator. The experimental results show that GCQN-TSC outperforms other traffic signal control methods in almost all performance metrics, including average queue length and waiting time, as it can aggregate information acquired from collaborative agents and make network-level signal optimization decisions. Road Side Units (RSUs) are an integral component of Vehicular ad hoc Networks (VANET) along with connected and autonomous vehicles. RSUs have been used to host numerous traffic sensing and control mechanisms to enhance transportation throughput in terms of safety, congestion avoidance, route planning, etc. In order to reduce installation and maintenance costs and associated network and security overhead, it is highly desirable to deploy these RSUs optimally, particularly in strategic and influential positions. While too many RSUs may increase overhead, too few RSUs may fail to map the entire region properly, resulting in erroneous computations. This paper aims to address this trade-off by incorporating a novel scheme called Intersection Influence Analysis System for Optimal RSU Deployment (IIA-ORD). The primary objective of IIA-ORD is achieved through modelling the transportation network as connected graphs and executing a modified K-shell and TOPSIS-based framework. Specifically, the network vertices are mapped with road intersections, and live traffic data is used to analyze various statistical measures, leading to the identification of influential junctions. Extensive performance analysis in an open-source simulation platform backed by real-time data justifies the performance superiority of the IIA-ORD system over existing RSU deployment strategies in terms of an overall number of deployed RSUs, average coverage, coverage time ratio, packet delivery ratio, and delay. The system is validated by a traffic forecasting application. The RSU is equipped with the Stacked Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (SBi-LSTM) based traffic prediction model, under which the RSU of a particular junction predicts the traffic congestion of the entire region without the deployment of additional RSUs. With the rapid development of internet technology and mobile devices, massive streaming data of spatiotemporal information is available for real-time data mining. Outlier detection is playing as one of the most important analysis tasks for trajectory stream processing, such as traffic control and urban planning. Existing work about this issue can be divided into two main categories: individual outlier detection (IOD) and group outlier detection (GOD). IOD focuses on detecting an individual trajectory outlier generated by a single moving object (e.g., an over-speeding car), while GOD aims to detect a group outlier generated by various moving objects (e.g., a group of cars influenced by a traffic jam). However, existing studies only support one of them and cannot comprehensively understand the traffic conditions by combining both of them. To this end, we propose a novel framework for real-time urban traffic outlier detection (RUTOD) in this paper. RUTOD contains IOD based on current traffic conditions and GOD according to historical data. In addition, we adopt a street-based trajectory division to accelerate investigation. Most traffic control systems are centralized, where all the collected data can be analyzed to make a decision. However, there are problems with computational complexity and, more seriously, real-time decision-making. This paper proposes a decentralized traffic routing system based on a new pheromone model of ant colony optimization algorithm and an automated negotiation technique in a connected vehicle environment. In particular, connected vehicles utilize a new pheromone model, namely the inverted pheromone model, which generates a repulsive force between vehicles and gives negative feedback to the congested roads. They also perform a collective learning-based negotiation process for distributing traffic flows throughout the road networks, reducing traffic congestion. Via extensive simulations based on the Simulation of Urban Mobility, the proposed system shows that it can significantly reduce travel time and fuel consumption compared to existing systems. To improve the efficiency of the traffic signal control and alleviate traffic congestion, many researchers focus on applying deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for traffic signal control systems (TSCS). The TSCS consider all the vehicles' waiting time around the intersection and decrease them so as to alleviate the traffic congestion. However, it has been confirmed that the DRL model is vulnerable to backdoor attacks. In this paper, we propose the first backdoor attack against DRL based TSCS. We define a special drive behavior as malicious input (called trigger). Once the trigger is activated via an attacker, the TSCS will only take into waiting time for the attacker's vehicle at the intersection. Bifurcation of traffic flow involves complex dynamic characteristics of the system. In order to understand the complex traffic phenomenon, this work designed a macro traffic model considering the driver's memory which plays an important role in the traffic flow. Based on this model, we investigate the effects of the driver's memory and wave velocity on the stability of the traffic flow. By means of one and two parameter bifurcation analysis, we explore how these parameters affect the bifurcation structure of the system, and further investigate the dynamic mechanisms of traffic flow. We explain various traffic phenomena related to the different types of equilibrium points and limit cycles by phase plane analysis. We also study how the initial density and bifurcation structure affect the energy consumption in the system. The results show that the driver's memory and wave velocity play an important role in the stability of the traffic flow. Accurate traffic flow prediction plays a significant role in urban traffic management, including traffic congestion control and public travel route planning. Recently, several approaches have been put forward to learn the patterns from historical traffic data. However, there exist some limitations resulting from the use of the static learning method to explore the dynamical characteristics of the road network. Besides, the dynamic global temporal and spatial properties are not considered in these models. These drawbacks lead to a low prediction performance and make applying to a more extensive road network challenging. To address these issues, from the inspiration of Chebyshev polynomial, we proposed an improved dynamic Chebyshev graph convolution neural network model called iDCGCN. In the proposed approach, a novel updating method for the Laplacian matrix, which approximately constructs features from different period data, is proposed based on the attention mechanism. In addition, a novel feature construction method is proposed to integrate long-short temporal and local-global spatial features for complex traffic flow representation. Traffic congestion in urban areas poses several challenges to municipal authorities including pollution, productivity loss, reckless driving, and delays in dealing with emergencies. Smart cities can use modern IoT infrastructure to solve the congestion problem and reduce pollution and delays. In this article, we focus on congestion mapping and mitigation for emergency vehicles in smart cities. We use a novel traffic light control technique to change the flow of cars on lights of interest thereby making way for emergency vehicles. We use a simulation model for a selected area of Manhattan to implement congestion mapping and to help find the fastest path for routing emergency vehicles based on the congestion metrics. The system controls traffic lights to block off the roads feeding into congestion and allows flow away from the congested path. This helps in clearing the preferred route to help emergency vehicles reach the destination faster. Traffic congestion is one of the biggest challenges around the world, resulting in multiple harmful consequences such as air pollution, road fatalities, and traffic jams. Thus, it is a vital need to develop preventive mechanisms that allow better traffic management and alleviate the burden put on the transport network. Vehicle-to-anything (V2X) communication is gaining massive research interest as a promising solution to mobility challenges. This technology will enable vehicles and the infrastructure to form a distributed network constantly exchanging traffic information in real-time. The availability of timely information can help road users make optimal choices and enable effective autonomous traffic control. Therefore, to avoid traffic congestion, mobility models need to be established to study vehicular dynamics and to forecast future traffic conditions. The main goal of this study is to develop a traffic model based on Markov chain to tackle the congestion issue in a highway environment. Based on traffic data collected from vehicles through V2X technology, the model studies the evolution of traffic flow along a multiple lane divided highway and locally calculates estimates of the expected number of vehicles traveling on a highway segment. Traffic congestion is becoming a serious problem with the large number of vehicle on the roads. In the traditional traffic control system, the timing of the green light is adjusted regardless of the average traffic rate at the junction. Many strategies have been introduced to solve and improve vehicle management. However, in order to handle road traffic issues, an intelligent traffic management solution is required. This article represents a self adaptive real-time traffic light control algorithm based on the traffic flow. We present a machine learning approach coupled with image processing to manage the traffic clearance at the signal junction. The proposed system utilizes single image processing via neural network and You Only Look Once (YOLOv3) framework to establish traffic clearance at the signal. We employed YOLO architectures because it is accurate in terms of mean average precision (mAP), interaction over union (IOU) values and fast in object detection tasks as well. It runs significantly faster than other detection methods with comparable performance. The average processing time of single image was estimated to be 1.3 s. Further based on the input from YOLO we estimated the 'on' time period green light for effective traffic clearance. Several real time parameters like number of vehicles (two wheelers, four wheelers), road width and junction crossing time are considered to estimate the 'on'time of green light. Moreover, we used the real traffic images to test the performance and trained the system with different dataset. Our experiments investigation reveals that the predicted vehicle counts were well matched with the actual vehicle count and proposed method apprehended an average accuracy of 81.1%. Traffic lights are an important controlling factor in traffic flows, and good policies will facilitate traffic congestion. A car's waiting time is highly related to the period in which the traffic lights are green or red; thus, a proper controlling policy reduces the waiting time and speeds up the car movement. Emergency vehicles always have a higher priority than other cars and need to reach their destination faster. In the last decade, a lot of research has been done to solve the traffic light scheduling issue using artificial intelligence techniques. Reinforcement learning with simulating human learning has the outstanding performance to solve complex problems, such as traffic lights control. In this study, a deep reinforcement learning traffic light control was implemented at a crossroad using real-time traffic information with an emphasis on emergency vehicles. The agent learns to adjust its policies to prioritize the emergency cars over the other cars. The results show less waiting time and speed up the cars' movement. It also indicates the emergency vehicles will cross the intersection with the least delay. With 200 to 600 cars and one emergency vehicle, the average delay decreases 2–16% in total using reinforcement learning. Because of the population increasing so high, and traffic density remaining the same, traffic prediction has become a great challenge today. Creating a higher degree of communication in automobiles results in the time wastage, fuel wastage, environmental damage, and even death caused by citizens being trapped in the middle of traffic. Only a few researchers work in traffic congestion prediction and control systems, but it may provide less accuracy. So, this paper proposed an efficient IoT-based traffic prediction using OWENN algorithm and traffic signal control system using Intel 80,286 microprocessor for a smart city. The proposed system consists of '5' phases, namely IoT data collection, feature extraction, classification, optimized traffic IoT values, and traffic signal control system. Initially, the IoT traffic data are collected from the dataset. After that, traffic, weather, and direction information are extracted, and these extracted features are given as input to the OWENN classifier, which classifies which place has more traffic. Suppose one direction of the place has more traffic, it optimizes the IoT values by using IBSO, and finally, the traffic is controlled by using Intel 80,286 microprocessor. An efficient OWENN algorithm for traffic prediction and traffic signal control using a Intel 80,286 microprocessor for a smart city. After extracting the features, the classification is performed in this step. Hereabout, the classification is done by using the optimized weight Elman neural network (OWENN) algorithm that classifies which places have more traffic. In recent times, congestion in traffic is bit cost effective and several traffic management methods are utilized to balance the traffic as per the capacity of roads. However, many methods fails in pre-analyzing the network events to regulate the traffic flow. Also, the dynamic movement of vehicles fails in adapting the vehicle units to follow the changing topology. Hence, it is necessary for packet forwarding between source and destination nodes in a precise manner, where the packet loss and communication overhead should be in control. In this paper, we utilize the concept of Connected Dominating Set (CDS) approach in traffic management for reducing the flow of traffic streaming in main routes. The CDS approach dynamically adapts itself with the changing topology and acts as a virtual backbone to reduce traffic overhead. It restricts the increased flow of vehicles to the dominators, since traffic congestion in such areas increases. The CDS forwarding (CDSF) finds the dominating or high congestion routes and diverts the traffic to other areas based on the level of traffic in sub-routes. The CDSF method works on an assumption that edges on road segments has multiple vehicles, where it increases the network efficiency. However, we make careful consideration of choosing the other road segments to traverse the required packets from source to destination with reduced packet loss. The construction of a virtual backbone network with series of neighboring backbone nodes traverses efficiently the packets. Further, choosing vehicles with low velocity improves the probability of connectivity in a specific area and increases the network throughput. This improves the re-routing flexibility and makes the packets to reach the destination without traffic congestion in VANETs. The CDSF method and control strategies are tested in NS2 and SUMO simulator under different traffic conditions. The results of simulation show that CDSF traffic management system reduces significantly the traffic congestion and overall traffic cost that includes CDF, average latency, average end-to-end delay, Hop count, packet error rate, percentage delivery ratio, data delivery rate, throughput. The result shows that the proposed method 0.345 times improved packet delivery ratio, 0.35 times improved throughput and 0.7 times reduced delay than the existing methods. Traffic congestion and smog are hot topics in recent years. This study analyzes the impacts of road traffic characteristic parameters on urban air quality quantitatively based on aerosol optical thickness (AOD) and geographical weighted regression (GWR) models, including the road network density, road area occupancy, intersection number, and bus network density as main factors. There are some major research findings. Firstly, there exists a strong positive correlation between the peak congestion delay index (PCDI) and air quality, the correlation has R2 values of up to 0.4962 (R 0.70). Secondly, GWR refines the local spatial changes in the AOD and the road parameters, and the correlation R2 based GWR model all above 0.6. The correlation between AOD and the road area occupancy was the highest, and the correlations with the bus network density and the intersections number were higher than that with the road network density. Thus, bus route planning, bus emission reduction, road network planning, and signal timing (at intersections) have a greater impact on air quality than other policy, especially in areas with traffic jams. As the global economy develops rapidly, traffic congestion has become a major problem for first-tier cities in various countries. In order to address the problem of failed real-time control of the traffic flow data by the traditional traffic light control as well as malicious attack and other security problems faced by the intelligent traffic light (ITL) control system, a multi-agent distributed ITL control method was proposed based on the fog computing platform and the Q learning algorithm used for the reinforcement learning in this study, and the simulation comparison was conducted by using the simulation platform jointly constructed based on the VISSIM-Excel VBA-MATLAB software. Subsequently, on the basis of puzzle difficulty of the computational Diffie–Helleman (CDH) and Hash Collision, the applicable security control scheme of ITL under the fog computing was proposed. The results reveal that the proposed intelligent control system prolongs the time of green light properly when the number of vehicles increases, thereby reducing the delay time and retention rate of vehicles; the security control scheme of ITL based on the puzzle of CDH is less efficient when the vehicle density increases, while that based on the puzzle of Hash collision is very friendly to the fog equipment. In recent years, due to the drastic rise in the number of vehicles and the lack of sufficient infrastructure, traffic jams, air pollution, and fuel consumption have increased in cities. The optimization of timing for traffic lights is one of the solutions for the mentioned problems. Many methods have been introduced to deal with these problems, including reinforcement learning. Although a great number of learning-based methods have been used in traffic signal control, they suffer from poor performance and slow learning convergence. In this paper, a transfer learning-based method for traffic signal control has been proposed. Multi-agent system has also been used for modelling the traffic network and transfer learning has been used to make reinforcement learning agents transfer their experience to each other. Traffic congestion is a common phenomenon in road transportation networks, especially during peak hours. More accurate prediction of dynamic traffic flows is very important for traffic control and management. However, disturbances caused by the time-varying origin-destination matrix, dynamic route choices, and disruptions make the modelling of traffic flows difficult. Therefore, this study focuses on modelling the dynamic evolution processes of traffic flows under disturbances and estimating dynamic travel times for arbitrary moment. A revised Lighthill–Whitham–Richards (RLWR) model with non-equilibrium states is presented to describe the dynamic traffic states on individual roads, and the ripple-spreading model (RSM) is integrated to investigate the interactions among several shockwaves from multiple roads. We propose a hybrid RLWR–RSM to model the congestion and congestion-recovery propagations in an entire transportation network. After predicting the dynamic traffic flows by the RLWR–RSM, the road travel times for arbitrary moment were estimated. Theoretical analyses indicated that (1) the RLWR–RSM inherits the advantages of macroscopic traffic flow models and integrates the characteristics of both low- and high-order continuum models, and (2) the RLWR–RSM considers multiple disturbances. From numerical experiments with various inputs, the variation in travel times under disturbances was investigated, and this further demonstrated that (1) the modelled dynamic traffic flows have four basic properties, and (2) the experimental results validate the theoretical analyses. The article discusses the issues of improving the collection of traffic information using video cameras and the statistical processing of collected data. The aim of the article was to identify the main patterns of traffic at intersections in traffic congestion and to develop an analysis technique to improve traffic management at intersections. In modern conditions, there is a sharp increase in the number of vehicles, which leads to negative consequences, such as an increase in travel time, additional fuel consumption, increased risk of traffic accidents and others. To solve the problem of improving traffic control at intersections, it is necessary to have a reliable information collection system and apply modern effective methods of processing the collected information. The purpose of this article is to determine the most important traffic characteristics that affect the throughput of intersections. As a criterion for the cross-pass ability of the intersection, the actual number of passing cars during the permission signal of the torch light is taken. Using multivariate regression analysis, a model was developed to predict intersection throughput taking into account the most important traffic characteristics. Analysis of the throughput of intersections using the fuzzy logic method confirmed the correctness of the developed model. In addition, based on the results of processing information collected at 20 intersections and including 597 observations, a methodology was developed for determining the similarity of traffic intersections. This allows us to identify homogeneous types of intersections and to develop typical traffic management techniques in the city, instead of individually managing each node of the city's transport network individually. Recent research in communication moves towards cyber space with modern applications such as multimedia surveillance, smart autonomous traffic control, advanced health care monitoring, industrial automation, and continuous remote environmental and structural monitoring. Path selection plays vital role in transmitting the multimedia data over wireless networks. Single path selection incurs routing failure due to the energy hole because of power shortage and traffic congestion. Due to energy hole in any particular node the packet gets dropped in the route from source to destination. The multipath routing algorithm selects more than one path to increase the rate of the packet delivery than the single path routing. The prediction of energy deficiency in sensor nodes is becoming over head in WSMNs. In order to improve the packet delivery and performance of the network, in this paper a Priority Based Multipath Routing Algorithm (PBMRA) is proposed. It consists of three modules: The Neighbourhood Selection identifies the neighbours; Multipath Construction constructs multiple paths from the indentified neighbours; and Priority Selection selects the high energized routes based on the priority of node attributes such as liveliness, path delay and hop count. The proposed algorithm is experimentally compared with other existing algorithms such as AODV, DSR, DSDV and OLSR. Roundabouts are a form of circular intersections adopted to secure road safety of the vehicles. However, collisions are not prevented entirely even when using roundabouts, since accidents may happen at specific intersection points leading to either traffic congestions or serious accidents. In this paper, a visible light communication (VLC)-based collision avoidance scheme is proposed to coordinate autonomous vehicles in traversing roundabouts, which has high effectiveness in vehicular environments. In particular, roadside units (RSUs) are deployed at the roundabout entrances to coordinate the vehicles in a vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) mode. By adopting the synchronization approach, vehicles can pass the roundabout simultaneously if their paths are concurrent with each other. Otherwise, vehicles are prioritized according to their arrival time and reasonable decelerations are applied to waive potential conflicts. Simulation results showed that our proposed approach satisfies the roundabout traffic demands in terms of concurrency, safety, and time utilization as vehicles are strongly recommended to decelerate in only 22% of the cases studied in different scenarios. The spread of traffic jams in urban networks has long been viewed as a complex spatio-temporal phenomenon that often requires computationally intensive microscopic models for analysis purposes. In this study, we present a framework to describe the dynamics of congestion propagation and dissipation of traffic in cities using a simple contagion process, inspired by those used to model infectious disease spread in a population. We introduce two macroscopic characteristics for network traffic dynamics, namely congestion propagation rate β and congestion dissipation rate μ. We describe the dynamics of congestion spread using these new parameters embedded within a system of ordinary differential equations, similar to the well-known susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) model. The proposed contagion-based dynamics are verified through an empirical multi-city analysis, and can be used to monitor, predict and control the fraction of congested links in the network over time. This paper presents a novel method to estimate queue length at signalised intersections using connected vehicle (CV) data. The proposed queue length estimation method does not depend on any conventional information such as arrival flow rate and parameters pertaining to traffic signal controllers. The model is applicable for real-time applications when there are sufficient training data available to train the estimation model. To this end, we propose the idea of "k-leader CVs" to be able to predict the queue which is propagated after the communication range of dedicated short-range communication (the communication platform used in CV system). The idea of k-leader CVs could reduce the risk of communication failure which is a serious concern in CV ecosystems. Furthermore, a linear regression model is applied to weigh the importance of input variables to be used in a neural network model. Vissim traffic simulator is employed to train and evaluate the effectiveness and robustness of the model under different travel demand conditions, a varying number of CVs (i.e. CVs' market penetration rate) as well as various traffic signal control scenarios. As it is expected, when the market penetration rate increases, the accuracy of the model enhances consequently. In a congested traffic condition (saturated flow), the proposed model is more accurate compared to the undersaturated condition with the same market penetration rates. Although the proposed method does not depend on information of the arrival pattern and traffic signal control parameters, the results of the queue length estimation are still comparable with the results of the methods that highly depend on such information. The proposed algorithm is also tested using large size data from a CV test bed (i.e. Australian Integrated Multimodal Ecosystem) currently underway in Melbourne, Australia. The simulation results show that the model can perform well irrespective of the intersection layouts, traffic signal plans and arrival patterns of vehicles. Since decades, road traffic congestions have been recognized as an escalating problem in many metropolitan areas worldwide. In addition to causing substantial number of casualties and high pollution rates, these congestions are decelerating economic growth by reducing mobility of people and goods as well as increasing the loss of working hours and fuel consumption. In order to deal with this problem, extensive research works have successively focused on predicting road traffic jams and then predicting their propagations. In spite of their relevance, the proposed solutions to traffic jam propagation have been profoundly dependent on historical data. They have not also used their predictions to intelligently allocate traffic control resources accordingly. We, therefore, propose in this paper a new two-stage traffic resource dispatching solution which is ultimately aiming to implement a self-organizing traffic control system based on Internet of Things. Our solution uses in its first phase a Markov Random Field (MRF) to model and predict the spread of traffic congestions over a road network. According to the obtained predictions, the solution uses Markov Decision Process (MDP) to automatically allocate the road traffic resources. To highlight the issue of traffic congestion worldwide specially in urban areas and to make it more efficient, research community is working on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). However, there is very limited work in security aspects of ITS which makes it less secure against increasing security threats. Most of the existing frameworks provide security services for ITS with many unrealistic assumptions. In this paper, we propose a Fog-based Security Framework for Intelligent Traffic Light Control System that provides security services with realistic assumptions. Moreover, the proposed framework is compared with a similar framework called secure intelligent traffic light control based on security, performance, and applicability in real world scenario. The results show that the proposed framework is more secure as compared to the existing secure intelligent traffic light control framework and realistic for real world scenario. The proposed framework possesses confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity features. The traditional transportation system is based on a fixed-timed strategy to control the traffic congestion on urban roads. However, the increase of vehicle density in a smart city implies the variation and the conflict on the demand pattern of the drivers. The smart city development requires to create an efficient control plan for an intelligent traffic management system. In this paper, we aim to reduce the congestion at signalized intersections, and satisfy the needs of drivers according to their degree of displacement urgency. We use two optimization methods, namely the synchronization and the genetic algorithm (GA ), where we develop three scheduling protocols. The first is the intelligent context-aware negotiation protocol (ICANP ). This protocol allows the negotiating vehicles to cross the intersection. It enables each traffic light at the signalized intersection to negotiate the green time assigned to its phase. ICANP uses GA to optimize the crossing time in order to minimize the total waiting time of negotiating vehicles. Moreover, we introduce a negotiation protocol based on reputation, which minimises the congestion effect from incoming dishonest drivers. Finally, we propose an intelligent context-aware priority protocol (ICAPP ), that considers the existence of priority vehicles. Upon arrival of at least one priority vehicle at the signalized intersection, ICAPP interrupts the green time of negotiating vehicles. A series of simulation showed that the proposed protocols reduce the total waiting time and the emissions of CO 2 of vehicles at signalized intersection, in comparison with circular, ITLC and CATLS scheduling algorithms. The urban green wave traffic control system is one of the effective means to solve the problems of urban traffic jams and reduce vehicle delay. Aiming at the problems of traditional green wave traffic control in optimization computation, this paper introduces the adaptive mechanism and crossover, mutation operators to artificial fish swarm algorithm (AFSA) in order to adjust the evolution group. Through setting bulletin board measure and retention strategy, the individual status of the optimal artificial fish is recorded. In that way, the adaptive genetic AFSA is established. Finally, the paper applies this algorithm to green wave traffic control in five continuous intersections on Jianning Road, Lanzhou, China, gains one traffic control program better than traditional method through calculation, and verifies the feasibility and effectiveness of adaptive genetic-AFSA to optimize green wave traffic control system. Beijing is China's national capital, a major economic center, and home to nearly 22 million people. The city currently suffers from serious traffic congestion and extreme air pollution. Beijing's metropolitan government is currently considering implementation of a congestion charging system intended to discourage the use of private motor vehicles and encourage a shift to public transportation. Nearly 1500 Beijing-area business managers responded to a survey asking their opinions about the system. The data was analyzed using multinomial logit modeling and cluster analysis to identify the major sources of support and non-support for the proposed system, and to create profiles of "typical" businesses that support, are neutral to, or oppose the system. These results indicate that support for the system is highest among small businesses located in the city's central business district, where there is significant traffic congestion and good access to public transportation. Support is weakest among large businesses located in outer suburbs with relatively limited public transit. Business managers' level of understanding of congestion charging and the extent to which they think it will successfully reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality were major factors in support or non-support for the proposed system. The results indicate that providing clear and credible information about the way the proposed system will work, how the revenue from congestion charging will be used, and the transportation and environmental benefits of the system are essential to gaining support from the business community. Mechanistic-empirical pavement design guide (MEPDG) or Pavement ME Design requires traffic inputs in three levels based on the availability of data and the importance of the project. The availability of site-specific (Level 1) traffic data is generally limited due to expensive cost and the accuracy of Level 3 average is unsatisfactory, and therefore the intermedium level (Level 2) traffic data need to be developed. Using multiple years of weigh-in-motion (WIM) and vehicle classification data from Oklahoma, this paper starts with a comprehensive check of the traffic data quality, and generates site-specific traffic inputs that are required in Pavement ME Design. Cluster analysis is then applied to develop homogeneous groups for each traffic input. Subsequently, decision tree model and multinomial regression model are developed for the selection of appropriate traffic clusters under given site design conditions. The rapid increase in the number of vehicles has given rise to the traffic jam, which is a major problem these days. The effect of traffic jam also effects the operation of ambulance. To avoid the traffic jam for the ambulance, a new idea is developed. In this paper we propose a new concept to avoid traffic jam for the ambulance and thus saving the life of an individual. At first the ambulance is detected and the information about the arrival of the ambulance is sent to the next station. The ambulance will make siren only when it carries patient inside, so by detecting both the ambulance siren and the image taken from the acquisition device, the information is sent to the next point which is on the way to hospital. Announcement of the arrival of the ambulance is done. The CCTV camera is monitoring each vehicle on that road. If any vehicle doesn't abide by the announcement done, the image of the vehicle will be captured, and then by using the acquired image the number plate will be tracked and will be detected automatically by image processing. The vehicle information is sent to the police station, to take the necessary action. Thus the traffic control can be done and the way is cleared for the ambulance and life is saved. This paper makes the first step towards mining citywide traffic congestion correlation by utilizing traffic related information from social media. Traffic congestion correlation mining, namely studying which road segments close to each other are highly likely to occur congestion simultaneously, is especially important to help many real applications, such as traffic prediction, traffic control, and urban transportation planning. Traditional traffic data collected from various sensors and other equipments are costly to obtain and hard to scale up to cover a entire city. With the rising popularity of social media, it is common for the public transportation systems and governments to share real time traffic information with the public through social media. It provides us great opportunities to study the traffic conditions of a city with the rich and easily available online data. However, it is also very difficult to use social media data to mine the citywide traffic congestion correlation due to the following major challenges: (1) Social media data like tweets in Twitter are usually noisy and hard to process, especially those tweets posted by individuals. (2) There lacks a method to study the citywide traffic congestion correlation. In this paper, instead of crawling all the traffic related tweets of a city, we only focus on utilizing the tweets posted by some particular organizations or governments. Tweets posted by them are more accurate and formal, thus it is much easier for traffic information extraction. We regard the traffic congestion correlation mining task as a spatio-temporal frequent pattern mining problem by considering each tweet reporting the traffic congestion of a particular road segment as a spatio-temporal item. A spatio-temporal frequent pattern mining algorithm TC_Apriori is also proposed to discover the road segment co-occurrence patterns in congestion. We use the tweets reporting the traffic information of Chicago to evaluate the proposed approach, and the results show that the proposed approach can effectively discover the road segment co-occurrence patterns in congestion.
