The review highlights the current state of knowledge of the chemical composition of lipids in halophytic plants. The role of lipids and lipophilic substances of halophytes in protecting plants from the effects of stress factors of abiotic and biotic nature is shown. Data on the composition of lipophilic components of halophytic plants growing in the Aral Sea region and other regions of the republic are presented. The rich composition of fatty acids in lipids of seeds and aerial parts of halophytes is shown. The comparative composition of polyprenols of various cotton varieties depending on resistance to stress factors is given. It was revealed that pre-sowing treatment of seeds of cultivated plants with preparations based on the lipid components of halophytic plants increases their adaptive abilities. Based on the data obtained, the prospects of using halophytes as a source of biologically active lipids and lipophilic substances to protect plants from salinity stress are shown. Understanding the nutritional quality of macrozooplankton is crucial for elucidating energy and matter fluxes in marine food webs and their value as fish prey. This study examines the seasonal (winter, spring, summer) and spatial variability in three quality indicators -energy density (ED), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) content, and DHA/EPA ratio- of Euphausia spp. and Grimothea gregaria. These indicators were analyzed in relation to size and environmental variables (temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll-a concentration) in the San Jorge Gulf (45°–47°S, 65°30′-67°30ʹW; Southwest Atlantic Ocean), a key feeding ground for commercially important fish on the Argentine shelf. Results showed that ED increased with size in Euphausia spp. but decreased in G. gregaria. Seasonal changes were the primary drivers of variations in the nutritional quality, with PUFA content being the index most contributing. For both species, the highest mean PUFA content occurred in winter and the lowest in summer, an inverse pattern to ED. The DHA/EPA ratio also peaked in winter and dropped in spring. Species differences significantly affected PUFA content and the DHA/EPA ratio, with Euphausia spp. exhibiting higher values. Although environmental variables, particularly bottom temperature and chlorophyll-a, varied significantly across sampling areas, no clear spatial patterns emerged in the quality indicators, likely due to the limited sample size. These results provide new and baseline information of zooplankton that can clarify the trophic interactions of many fish and their respective predators along the Argentinean Shelf, and how these relationships may change with environmental variability in the current global change context. Six Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichusmawsoni) have been analyzed for qualitative and quantitative determination of muscular lipid distribution. The specimens were representative of different physical condition and life stage: two adults in good condition and two adults in poor condition (termed "axe handles" based on their emaciated shape) from the spawning area of the Ross Sea seamounts, and two sub-adults from the continental shelf. Axe handles had lower lipid quantities. Among the individuals in good condition, adults from the seamounts had higher accumulation of lipid in the dorsal portion, maybe related to the neutral buoyancy for the reproductive migration. Thirteen saturated fatty acids (SFA) and three unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) have been identified. Subadults from the shelf had higher SFA/UFA ratios in the anterior part of the body, where they might store somatic lipids for buoyancy. The individuals from the spawning area had higher SFA/UFA ratios in the posterior part of the trunk, indicating after the migration a primary consumption of the somatic fatty acids near the center of buoyancy. SFA uptake from the diet seems to be difficult at the spawning area and they may be replaced by UFA. This translates into a reduced ability to re-acquire neutral buoyancy for a returning migration. The present investigation has evaluated the use of effluents from a secondary municipal wastewater treatment plant for biomass production and potential of the biomass for biodiesel production. Cultivations of Chlorella vulgaris using wastewater, wastewater with supplementation, and WC medium were carried out. Effect of wastewater collected in different months on biomass productivity (BP) and lipid composition was studied. Methods based on NMR and GC–MS techniques were applied for determining the composition of the lipids and their fatty acid profile including poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Lipids extracted are comprised of both neutral (tri acyl glycerides, TAG; free fatty acids, FFA) and polar (glyco glycero/phospho) lipids. The TAG content of the extracted lipids was determined in the range of 22.5–41.3% w/w. The NMR and GC–MS compositional results of microalgal lipids of biomasses cultivated in wastewater without nutrient supplementation, collected in different months, showed potential for biodiesel production. The fatty acid profiles of neutral and polar lipids, which are mainly comprised of saturated and unsaturated long alkyl chain (C16-C22) fatty acids, are potential sources for the biodiesel and food industry. The concentration of nitrates (45–78 mg L−1) in wastewater without supplementation, collected in different months, was found to be optimum to enable cultivation of biomasses with reasonably good BP of 21.5–28.1 mg L−1 day−1. Similar results have been obtained in the present work as well as reported in the literature in the case of WC medium (nitrate, 69 mg L−1) with BP of 25.5–28.2 mg L−1 day−1, thus highlighted the significance of the presented work. Oleaginous fungi have attracted a great deal of interest for their potency to accumulate high amounts of lipids (more than 20% of biomass dry weight) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), which have a variety of industrial and biological applications. Lipids of plant and animal origin are related to some restrictions and thus lead to attention towards oleaginous microorganisms as reliable substitute resources. Lipids are traditionally biosynthesized intra-cellularly and involved in the building structure of a variety of cellular compartments. In oleaginous fungi, under certain conditions of elevated carbon ratio and decreased nitrogen in the growth medium, a change in metabolic pathway occurred by switching the whole central carbon metabolism to fatty acid anabolism, which subsequently resulted in high lipid accumulation. The present review illustrates the bio-lipid structure, fatty acid classes and biosynthesis within oleaginous fungi with certain key enzymes, and the advantages of oleaginous fungi over other lipid bio-sources. Qualitative and quantitative techniques for detecting the lipid accumulation capability of oleaginous microbes including visual, and analytical (convenient and non-convenient) were debated. Factors affecting lipid production, and different approaches followed to enhance the lipid content in oleaginous yeasts and fungi, including optimization, utilization of cost-effective wastes, co-culturing, as well as metabolic and genetic engineering, were discussed. A better understanding of the oleaginous fungi regarding screening, detection, and maximization of lipid content using different strategies could help to discover new potent oleaginous isolates, exploit and recycle low-cost wastes, and improve the efficiency of bio-lipids cumulation with biotechnological significance. Future growth of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) in Norway is tied to finding solutions for major ecological challenges connected to salmon lice, escapees, and nutrient emissions from sea cages. At the same time, nutrient-rich sludge from salmon production comprises a valuable resource for the cultivation of lower trophic species using an integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) approach. This study aimed to quantify the sedimentation of aquaculture sludge under sea cages of an Atlantic salmon aquaculture site and to qualify the composition of this sludge. Additionally, the study evaluated the hypothetical use of sludge from sea-based aquaculture as a feed source for polychaetes Hediste diversicolor. Using sediment traps, sludge samples were collected under two different Atlantic salmon sea cages, at two different depths, and three different sampling dates. Subsequently, they were quantified, and their composition was assessed with regards to carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), lipid, fatty acid (FA), protein, amino acid (AA), and ash content as well as elemental ratios and composition of FAs and AAs. The quantity of collected sludge was significantly different between sea cages, with a strong positive correlation between feed input and collected sludge (R2 = 0.98, p < 0.05). Sampling depth did not affect the quantity of collected sludge in the sediment traps (2215 ± 480 mg DW day−1), and no significant difference in sedimented sludge as a proportion of theoretically produced sludge (12.94 ± 2.16%) was found when comparing the different cages and sampling depths. Furthermore, the composition of collected sludge was similar at all sampling points. The overall nutritional value was lower compared to sludge from land-based aquaculture; regardless, sludge from sea-based salmon production can in theory be considered a potential feed resource to be used for the production of polychaetes H. diversicolor. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of salinity on the proximate composition and fatty acid profile of the Nile tilapia fillet when reared in a biofloc system. Juveniles (200 ± 10 g) were reared at salinities of 2, 8, 15 and 22 PSU for 56 days. At the end of the experiment, the proximate composition and the fatty acid profile were evaluated in the fillets. No significant differences were observed for crude protein, ether extract, dry matter and ash levels. However, saturated (SFA) and monounsaturated (MUFA) fatty acids were higher in tilapia reared at 2 PSU compared to other salinities (8, 15, and 22 PSU). The polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) contents did not vary among fish reared at salinities of 2, 8, and 15 PSU but were significantly lowest in tilapia reared at 22 PSU. The overall results suggest that the different salinities do not significantly affect the proximate composition of the Nile tilapia file reared in a biofloc system. On the other hand, the fatty acid composition was influenced by salinity, as a reduction in PUFA content was observed at the highest tested salinity (22 PSU) and an increase in SFA and MUFA contents were recorded at the lowest tested salinity (2 PSU). This study aims to investigate the metal content, fatty acid composition, lipid quality, and potential health risks of Pontastacus leptodactylus crayfish inhabiting Atikhisar Dam Lake. The research covers a 12-month period and includes both male and female individuals. The study investigated the metal content of crayfish specimens. In female individuals, the metal concentrations were ranked as Fe > Zn > Al > Cu > Mn > Se > As > Hg > Cd > Pb, while in male individuals, the ranking was Fe > Al > Zn > Cu > Mn > Se > As > Hg > Pb > Cd. The results demonstrate that Atherogenicity Index (AI) values for both genders range between 0.21 and 0.31, and Thrombogenicity Index (TI) values fall within 0.14 and 0.20. This indicates that crayfish meat is composed of healthy and high-quality fatty acids. In male individuals, omega-3 values range from 25.28 ± 0.380% to 28.34 ± 0.430%, and in female individuals, they vary from 22.98 ± 0.195% to 28.73 ± 0.871%. These findings underscore the absence of significant health risks associated with mercury levels in crayfish meat. Monthly meal calculations reveal that consuming female crayfish at an average of 4.35 servings per month for adults and 2.24 servings per month for children presents no health hazards. Similarly, the consumption of crayfish meat at an average of 5.29 servings per month for adult males and 2.72 servings per month for male children is deemed safe for health. The relationship between the ecological conditions in water bodies experiencing varying degrees of anthropogenic impact and the composition of total lipids and fatty acids (FAs) of individual organs and tissues (liver and foot) and the whole body of the freshwater snail Limnaea stagnalis has been studied. The lake located within the city limits is subject to various types of pollution, and the lake located within a specially protected natural area is clean. The composition and content of total lipids and fatty acids in mollusks changes depending on the ecological conditions in the lakes. Their maximum content was detected in the digestive gland. The dominant lipids in the organs and tissues of the mollusks in the studied lakes are phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine, and polyunsaturated acids predominate in the FA composition. The changes in the content of lipids and FAs of L. stagnalis are probably due to the high concentrations of organic compounds and heavy metals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Longer-term intake of fatty acid (FA)-modified dairy products (SFA-reduced, MUFA-enriched) was reported to attenuate postprandial endothelial function in humans, relative to conventional (control) dairy. Thus, we performed an in vitro study in human aortic endothelial cells (HAEC) to investigate mechanisms underlying the effects observed in vivo. Methods: This sub-study was conducted within the framework of the RESET study, a 12-week randomised controlled crossover trial with FA-modified and control dairy diets. HAEC were incubated for 24 h with post-intervention plasma samples from eleven adults (age: 57.5 ± 6.0 years; BMI: 25.7 ± 2.7 kg/m2) at moderate cardiovascular disease risk following representative sequential mixed meals. Markers of endothelial function and lipid regulation were assessed. Results: Relative to control, HAEC incubation with plasma following the FA-modified treatment increased postprandial NOx production (P-interaction = 0.019), yet up-regulated relative E-selectin mRNA gene expression (P-interaction = 0.011). There was no impact on other genes measured. Conclusion: Incubation of HAEC with human plasma collected after longer-term dairy fat manipulation had a beneficial impact on postprandial NOx production. Further ex vivo research is needed to understand the impact of partial replacement of SFA with unsaturated fatty acids in dairy foods on pathways involved in endothelial function. The authors studied the composition of fatty acids (FAs) in four species of dominant obligate halophytes—Triglochin maritima, Plantago maritima, Tripoliumpannonicum subsp. tripolium, and Lysimachiamaritima—growing in different flood conditions in the littoral zone of the White Sea. It was found that the content of total FA varied from 13 to 22 mg/g a.d.w. with maximum values in L.maritima and minimal in P. maritima. All species have high values of UFA content (74–77%), double bond index (1.6–1.8), and a significant contribution of triene FAs (45–55%). A high diversity of long-chain FAs (C20–24) was established: 14 FAs. This analysis showed the similarity of all halophytes in the main parameters of FA composition and the high functional activity of halophyte membrane systems. Two clusters of species with different adaptive responses have been identified: the first includes P. maritima, Triglochin maritima and Tripoliumpannonicum and the second includes L.maritima. A comparison of data for two clusters showed that there are FAs that are involved in the adaptation of all types of C18:3(n-3), C16:0, C18:2(n-6), and FAs that differ among clusters. For species of the first cluster, 1 FA is C20:4(n-4), and, for the second cluster, 4 FAs are C18:1(n-9), C18:3(n-4), C20:1(n-9), and C22:0. The photoperiod is an important ecological factor synchronizing the endogenous rhythms of growth and development of the Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. The changes in the FA content of phospholipids (PL) and triacylglycerols (TAG) during the growth and development of Atlantic salmon juveniles (fingerlings, parrs, and smolts) at different lighting and feeding regimes in aquaculture of the southern region (North Ossetia, Alania) were studied. A high content of saturated fatty acids (SFA) and a consistently high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in PL (more than 40% of the total FA) were detected. An increase in the content of PUFA in TAG both in the salmon liver and in muscles during development from fingerlings to smolts indicated the biochemical changes in the fish organism preparing for smoltification and the transition to living in sea water. Among PUFA, n-3 PUFA dominated, while the content of n-6 PUFA was no more than 5% both in PL and TAG of juvenile salmon. At the same time, among PUFA the content of eicosapentaenoic acid 20:5(n-3) (EPA) in the muscles of both parrs and smolts was higher than in the liver, where docosapentaenoic acid 22:5(n-3) (DPA) dominated. The results of quantitative and qualitative changes in the FA components of lipids in juvenile salmon depending on changes in the lighting and feeding regimes are important for understanding the mechanisms of ecological and biochemical adaptations that determine the early development of salmon and its transition to the smoltification. As the problem of antimicrobial resistance is constantly increasing, there is a renewed interest in antimicrobial products derived from natural sources, particularly obtained from innovative and eco-friendly materials. Insect lipids, due to their fatty acid composition, can be classified as natural antimicrobial compounds. In order to assess the antibacterial efficacy of Hermetia illucens lipids, we extracted this component from the larval stage, fed on different substrates and we characterized it. Moreover, we analyzed the fatty acid composition of the feeding substrate, to determine if and how it could affect the antimicrobial activity of the lipid component. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated against Gram-positive Micrococcus flavus and Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli. Analyzing the fatty acid profiles of larval lipids that showed activity against the two bacterial strains, we detected significant differences for C4:0, C10:0, C16:1, C18:3 n3 (ALA), and C20:1. The strongest antimicrobial activity was verified against Micrococcus flavus by lipids extracted from larvae reared on strawberry, tangerine, and fresh manure substrates, with growth inhibition zones ranged from 1.38 to 1.51 mm, while only the rearing on manure showed the effect against Escherichia coli. Notably, the fatty acid profile of H. illucens seems to not be really influenced by the substrate fatty acid profile, except for C18:0 and C18:2 CIS n6 (LA). This implies that other factors, such as the rearing conditions, larval development stages, and other nutrients such as carbohydrates, affect the amount of fatty acids in insects. Choosing the right packaging material is of great importance as it has a great impact on the shelf life of foods. This study was carried out to determine the lipid characteristics, oil oxidation level and bioactive properties of hazelnut varieties (Tombul, Kara) stored for 1 year with jute (JP) and poly-propylene fabric weaving (PP) packaging materials under ambient conditions (average temperature, humidity; 16.7 °C, 74.4%). We observed a proportional decrease in oil content due to the increase in humidity during storage. Oleic, palmitic, saturated-fatty acids (SFA) and mono-unsaturated fatty acids decreased while linoleic acid and polyunsaturated-fatty acids (PUFA) increased. Over time, the amount of β-sitosterol, campesterol, total-sterol, α-tocopherol, total-tocopherol, carotenoid decreased due to oxidation. On the other hand, shortening of shelf life can be expected due to the increase in water activity, peroxide value, free-fatty acidity, unsaturated-fatty acids/SFA, PUFA/SFA, iodine value, decrease in oleic/linoleic and stability index. A common model could not be found because the packaging material effect behaves differently according to the varieties. However, PP maintained total phenolic better by 15.78% and 7.79% in Tombul and Kara, respectively. In general, it was determined that the storage time affected the investigated parameters, and it was observed that PP, whose use has increased in recent years, and JP, which is the traditional packaging materials, provide similar protection. As a result, in terms of the parameters examined, it was determined that it would be appropriate to use both packaging materials for the storage of hazelnuts for 1 year under the manufacturer's conditions. The nutritional profile, protein identification of Rhynchophorus phoenicis larvae protein concentrate (Rp PC) were evaluated, as well as its emulsifying properties at different pH levels. Rp PC larvae was prepared from defatted insect flour through alkaline solubilization (pH 9.0) followed by acid precipitation (pH 4.5). The composition of Rp PC consisted of 70.66 g/100 g of proteins, 10.30 g/100 g of lipids (including triacylglycerols and free fatty acids at 3.09 g/100 g and 4.87 g/100 g, respectively), and 11.30 g/100 g of water. The amino acid profile of Rp PC showed high nutritional value, with 38.33 g/100 g of indispensable amino acids. Similarly, the polyunsaturated fatty acid content was 1.14 g/100 g, with an excellent n-6/n-3 ratio of 2.98. Among the identified proteins, some were muscle proteins while others were allergens. In terms of functional properties, Rp PC exhibited maximum solubility of 84.6 ± 2.0 g/100 g protein at pH 10.0, and minimum solubility of 11.6 ± 0.7 g/100 g protein at pH 4.0. Rp PC was able to form oil-in-water emulsions with monomodal particle size distributions and volume-weighted average diameters ranging from 2.2 ± 0.1 µm (at pH 9.0) to 4.8 ± 1.6 µm (at pH 5.0). Rp PC allowed for the stabilization of oil-in-water emulsions for at least 24 h at pH 7.0 and 9.0. Proteins extracted from Rhynchophorus phoenicis larvae at alkaline pH exhibited valuable nutritional and emulsifying properties, suggesting that Rp PC could be used as an emulsifying agent or in the formulation of new food products. The microalga Nitzschia cf. thermaloides was found in reservoirs of mud volcanoes in eastern Crimea. The species was observed to have a wide range of halotolerance and, in particular, to be capable of vegetative reproduction within a substrate salinity range of 0–110‰. The effect of salinity on the fatty acid (FA) profile was for the first time studied in N. cf. thermaloides. The quantitative and qualitative FA composition remained unchanged regardless of salinity, suggesting maintenance of a stable compacted membrane structure, which probably contributes to the species adaptation to salinity. Saturated FAs accounted for a major portion of total FAs, and the species was therefore assumed to provide a potentially valuable source of saturated FAs for biotechnology and an alternative raw material for biofuel. Lipids are essential in feeds for rearing marine fish. Inadequate handling and storage of feeds can cause lipid oxidation, increasing toxic compounds while decreasing the nutrition quality of feeds and negatively affecting both the physiology and rearing performance of fish. Here, the effect of increasing oxidized lipids intake was assessed on rearing performance and health of juvenile L. guttatus. Experimental feeds (EF) were manufactured with different levels of total peroxides (PV, 26–107 meqO2 × kg−1) and anisidine value (AV, 74–154). A total of 270 fish (18 fish by tank, three replicates by treatment) with an initial average weight of 6.5 ± 1 g were reared in 3 m3 tanks for 45 days. Survival and growth rate decreased with increasing PV and AV, particularly in fish fed with higher values of oxidized lipids. Viscerosomatic index was positively correlated with increase of oxidized lipids in EF, probably caused by increasing food retention into the gut. Glucose in plasma was inversely correlated with PV and AV in EF and together with the damage observed (i.e., inflammatory nodules, necrosis, and higher hepatosomatic index) suggests a decrease of liver metabolism. The increases of PV and AV on feeds were positively correlated with levels of triacylglycerides and total cholesterol in plasma, indicating an alteration in lipid metabolism. The total protein content in plasma and hematocrit was not different among treatments; in contrast, hemoglobin content decreased compared with control, suggesting an increase in the fragility of blood cells and oxygen transport capacity. Highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) composition in the brain and liver was not different between treatments, but PV and AV were inversely correlated with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) levels in neutral lipids and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and arachidonic acid (ARA) levels in polar lipids in liver tissue, suggesting a specific demand to counteract cell damage caused by the accumulation of oxidized lipids. The content of HUFA in total lipids from muscle suggests this is an important storage tissue, whereas EPA level decreased with oxidized lipids in the diet. Lipid extraction from microalgae was studied more specifically considering the effects of the extraction method and solvent mixture on cell walls. Chlorella vulgaris and Nannochloropsis oculata were maintained in Bold Basal Medium (BBM) and, Dunaliella salina and Dunaliella tertiolecta in Guillard "F/2" medium, sterile with continuous aeration at 18 ºC at 80 µmol photons m−2 s−1. The objective of the study was to evaluate and compare the lipid content and fatty acid profiles of 4 microalgae species (freshwater and marine species) using two lipid extraction methods, Soxhlet and ultrasonication. Biomass production was greatest in the stationary phase for all microalgae, with D. salina exhibiting the highest production with 0.40–0.42 g L−1. Biomass productivity for freshwater microalgae was higher in the stationary phase (0.0360–0.0407 g L−1 day−1) and in the exponential phase for marine microalgae (0.057–0.064 g L−1 day−1). The highest percentage of lipids in marine microalgae was between 38–54% by weight in the stationary phase, with D. tertiolecta; in comparison, the freshwater microalgae reached between 22–23% by weight in the exponential phase, for the species N. oculata. The highest number of fatty acids observed in marine microalgae was by Soxhlet extraction in D. tertiolecta in both growth phases. The highest percentage of any fatty acid with this method was palmitic acid (61%) in the stationary phase of C vulgaris. The ultrasonication extraction method presented the highest percentages in the stationary phase of N. oculata and D. tertiolecta, palmitic acid (C16:0) showing the highest percentages (87 and 51%) in the exponential phase in both marine microalgae. Microalgal-biofilm culture has the advantages of less water requirement and higher lipid productivity. For efficient lipid production in an aerial phase condition, it is ideal to simultaneously induce microalgal biofilm growth and lipid accumulation. Biomass production and lipid accumulation in the aerial microalga Coccomyxa subellipsoidea KGU-D001 were investigated in the logarithmic growth phase. Initially, the alga was cultured in three different conditions: in liquid phase using Bold's basal medium (BBM), and in the aerial phase in the presence or absence of BBM. In aerial phase conditions with nutrients (i.e., BBM), biomass production was prioritized over cell proliferation until approximately the 7th day of culture. In the liquid phase conditions, the ratio of total organic carbon to total nitrogen (C/N) in cells was almost constant during the culture period. However, in both aerial phase conditions, the C/N ratio increased during the culture period, more so in the absence of nutrients. The total fatty acid content also increased throughout the culture period. Then, algal cells were cultured for a 17-day culture; there would be a growth period of 10 days followed by a lipid accumulation period of 7 days. In such cultures in the presence of BBM, the biomass and lipid productivities (388 and 94.2 mg/m2/day) were both significantly higher in the aerial phase than in the liquid phase during the lipid production period. Microbes are the major source of lipids, which include fatty acids and glycerolipids. Lipids are used as bioplastic and biosurfactants in several industries. Value-added compounds like alpha-linolenic acid, 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO), fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), keto-carotenoids, lactic acid, 2,3-butanediol, citric acid, lutein, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), 1,3-dihydroxyacetone, oleic acid, propionic acid, and succinic acid have huge applications in textile, cosmetic, food, metallurgy, and pharmaceutical industries. These microbial-based lipids have various industrial and technology applications as printing inks, lubricants, coatings, polymers, solvents, leather processing, hydraulic fluids, surfactants, glycerin (glycerol), pesticide/herbicide adjuvants, and fuels. Biotechnological processes such as medium engineering and metabolic engineering can enhance lipid production in microbes to a certain limit. Integrated biorefinery concept was introduced for cost reduction, efficient utilisation of feedstocks, high yield, zero waste discharges, high productivity, and economically viable technology development. It integrates the conversion of biomass to energy and other high-value products. This review focuses on the bioreactor design; integrated biorefineries; genetic and metabolic engineering prospect of enhanced microbial lipid production; application of microbial lipids in various sectors such as pharmaceuticals, dietary supplement, cosmetics, and biodiesel production; costing; and life cycle assessment. Multiple myeloma (MM) is the second most common hematological malignancy worldwide, characterized by abnormal proliferation of malignant plasma cells within a tumor-permissive bone marrow microenvironment. Metabolic dysfunctions are emerging as key determinants in the pathobiology of MM. In this review, we highlight the metabolic features of MM, showing how alterations in various lipid pathways, mainly involving fatty acids, cholesterol and sphingolipids, affect the growth, survival and drug responsiveness of MM cells, as well as their cross-talk with other cellular components of the tumor microenvironment. These findings will provide a new path to understanding the mechanisms underlying how lipid vulnerabilities may arise and affect the phenotype of malignant plasma cells, highlighting novel druggable pathways with a significant impact on the management of MM. Lipids of air-dried leaves of the hemi-halophyte plant Limonium gmelinii (Willd.) Kuntze (Plumbaginaceae) growing on the dry bed of the Aral Sea were studied. The leaves contained neutral lipids (NL, 0.84% of the mass), glycolipids (GL, 1.78), and phospholipids (PhL, 0.74). The compositions of the lipophilic constituents of the NL and hydrocarbons were determined. Fatty acids of NL were dominated by 18:2n6 (53.45%); of GL and PhL, 16:0 (40.14 and 53.98%, respectively). The vegetative organs of common basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) grown in water culture at different levels of illumination (50, 100, and 150 μmol PAR quanta/(m2 s)) for 21 days were studied. In the work, the Purple Velvet basil variety, which is popular in agriculture and has intensely colored leaves was used. The biomass, water content, and composition of fatty acids (FA) of total lipids in the leaves and roots of plants and the content of malondialdehyde and chlorophylls (a, b) in the aerial parts of plants were determined. The sensitivity of the FA composition and morphophysiological parameters (biomass and chlorophyll content in leaves) of O. basilicum plants to the intensity of illumination was shown. The greatest effect was caused by the illumination intensity mode of 150 µmol/(m2 s). Species composition of O. basilicum FA under all lighting conditions was wider in root lipids; however, more pronounced changes in the qualitative composition of FAs were observed in leaves. Photodependent regulation of FA component composition of O. basilicum manifested itself in an increase in the proportion of unsaturated FAs, especially polyene ones, which led to an increase in the unsaturation index (UI) of esterified lipid FAs. The highest UI values were obtained with illumination of 150 µmol/(m2 s). At the same time, with an increase in the illumination intensity, a significant increase in the activity of ω-3 and ω-9-desaturases occurred, which indicates in favor of their light-dependent activation. Thus, increasing the intensity of lighting to certain values directly proportionally affects the physiological parameters of O. basilicum. The maximum indicators of productive growth and the implementation of adaptive mechanisms of green and underground parts of basil plants correspond to illumination of 150 µmol/(m2 s). The natural product pneumocandin B0 is the precursor of the antifungal drug caspofungin. To explore the relationship between pneumocandin B0 and oil. We found that the addition of 1 g/L of oil to the fermentation medium is more conducive to the production of pneumocandin B0. The metabolic reaction mechanism was explored using different fatty acids and the results showed that stearic acid and acetic acid increased the total production of pneumocandin B0 by 22.98% and 9.08%, respectively, as well as increasing the content of intracellular lipid droplets. We also analyzed gene expression and pathway differences between the two different fatty acids using transcriptome analyses. The addition of both acetic acid and stearic acid promoted an active pentose phosphate pathway, providing cells with higher intracellular reducing power. We found that the addition of fatty acids can lead to lipid accumulation, and lipid droplets can sequester lipophilic secondary metabolites such as pneumocandin B0 to reduce cell damage. These results provide novel insights into the relationship between pneumocandin B0 biosynthesis and fatty acids in G. lozoyensis. The study aimed to apply gamma radiation as a cell pretreatment method for lipid extraction and for obtaining astaxanthin from residual biomass of Haematococcus pluvialis. Factor 1 of the two-factor experimental design was represented by cell pretreatment methods: biomass with chloroform:methanol under ultrasound (BCMU), biomass with chloroform:methanol under γ radiation (BCMR), dry biomass under γ radiation (DBR), and control (without pretreatment). Factor 2 considered the vegetative and cystic phases. Cultivation was performed in a mixotrophic system, and biomass was collected in both phases, centrifuged, lyophilized, and submitted to cell pretreatment and lipid extraction. Lipid content and FAMEs were evaluated comparing pretreatment methods and life cycle phases. Total lipid content was higher with the BCMR method in the vegetative (18% DW) and cystic (14% DW) phases. Gamma radiation combined with organic solvent was more efficient for increasing lipid yield, and DBR had a lipid yield similar to BCMU. FAME content differed between phases and pretreatments for most fatty acids, mainly C16:0, C16:1, C18:1n9c, C18:2n6c, C18:2n6t, and C18:3n3. The predominance of saturated or low unsaturated fatty acids makes H. pluvialis, in both phases, suitable for biofuel production. The preservation of astaxanthin from residual cystic biomass was observed when submitted to the DBR method, with a concentration similar to the raw biomass (1.5% DW). Gamma radiation in dry biomass has an antioxidant effect. Therefore, the lipid extraction method preceded by gamma irradiation was efficient for vegetative and cystic cells of H. pluvialis and contributed to the preservation of astaxanthin from residual cystic biomass. The effect of sugarcane molasses on lipid content and fatty acids methyl ester (FAME) profile by Chromochloris zofingiensis is investigated in this work. For this purpose, the strain has been cultivated under mixotrophic conditions in a medium amended with specific concentrations of molasses (0.5 g/L, 1 g/L, and 2 g/L) able to sustain microalgae growth. Better biomass concentration, lipid content, and lipid productivity (1.6 g/L, 38% wt, and 286 mg/L/day) than the control (1.32 g/L, 16% wt, and 139 mg/L/day) were obtained with 2 g/L of molasses. The highest value of the total lipid content (42% wt) was reached with 1 g/L of molasses. FAME profile revealed a 97% composition in C16-C18 with no statistically meaningful differences among the three concentrations of molasses tested. The most represented fatty acids were C18:1 oleic (> 38% wt), C18:2 linoleic (> 21% wt), and C16:0 palmitic (> 14% wt). When using 2 g/L of molasses unsaturated fatty acids reached the highest portion (77%) than the control (61%). Specifically, all FAMEs have been quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed in order to improve biodiesel properties. The main characteristics of biodiesel obtainable from the algal lipids appeared in compliance with ASTM standards for unblended biodiesel and fulfilled European regulations (EN 14,214 and EN 590) for the quality of biodiesel. Owing the compliance of the corresponding biodiesel characteristics with international standards, a profitable biodiesel can be obtained under mixotrophic conditions triggered by the use of a food industry waste. Background: Bees provide essential pollination services for many food crops and are critical in supporting wild plant diversity. However, the dietary landscape of pollen food sources for social and solitary bees has changed because of agricultural intensification and habitat loss. For this reason, understanding the basic nutrient metabolism and meeting the nutritional needs of bees is becoming an urgent requirement for agriculture and conservation. We know that pollen is the principal source of dietary fat and sterols for pollinators, but a precise understanding of what the essential nutrients are and how much is needed is not yet clear. Sterols are key for producing the hormones that control development and may be present in cell membranes, where fatty-acid-containing species are important structural and signalling molecules (phospholipids) or to supply, store and distribute energy (glycerides). Aim of the review: In this critical review, we examine the current general understanding of sterol and lipid metabolism of social and solitary bees from a variety of literature sources and discuss implications for bee health. Key scientific concepts of review: We found that while eusocial bees are resilient to some dietary variation in sterol supply the scope for this is limited. The evidence of both de novo lipogenesis and a dietary need for particular fatty acids (FAs) shows that FA metabolism in insects is analogous to mammals but with distinct features. Pavlova sp. is not only one of the most popular microalgae in aquaculture, but also a source of high-quality biodiesel feedstock. With white light as a control (W), Pavlova sp. was cultured in this study under varying light quality, including monochromatic red light (R), blue light (B), and combinations thereof with different proportions (illuminators of mRnB, comprised of m red light units and n blue ones, m+n=7), to examine the effects of illuminating light quality on biocomponent production and biodiesel quality. The results show that combined monochromatic light, especially 2R5B, 3R4B, 4R3B, and 5R2B, could improve the growth of Pavlova sp. The dry weight of harvested algae powder in the 5R2B group reached 418.03 mg/L, and was 22.65% higher than that in the control group (W). Lipid production under combined monochromatic light of 4R3B reached 107.86 mg/L, and was 25.61% higher than in the control (W). In addition, illumination using 4R3B increased the proportion of C16:0 (palmitic acid) and C16: 1 (palmitoleic acid) fatty acids in Pavlova sp. by 15.55% and 21.94%, respectively, which translates into improved biodiesel quality. All cetane numbers (CN) for 4R3B–6R1B were over 51, while iodine values (IV) and degrees of unsaturation (DU) were reduced, leading to more stable biodiesel suitable for long-term storage. In addition, protein production under 6R1B was as high as 31.56 mg/L, 1.8 times greater than under W. Light quality is proposed as an effective tool to regulate biocomponent production by microalgae. Microbial lipids are considered promising and environmentally friendly substitutes for fossil fuels and plant-derived oils. They alleviate the depletion of limited petroleum storage and the decrement of arable lands resulting from the greenhouse effect. Microbial lipids derived from oleaginous yeasts provide fatty acid profiles similar to plant-derived oils, which are considered as sustainable and alternative feedstocks for use in the biofuel, cosmetics, and food industries. Rhodotorula toruloides is an intriguing oleaginous yeast strain that can accumulate more than 70% of its dry biomass as lipid content. It can utilize a wide range of substrates, including low-cost sugars and industrial waste. It is also robust against various industrial inhibitors. However, precise control of the fatty acid profile of the lipids produced by R. toruloides is essential for broadening its biotechnological applications. This mini-review describes recent progress in identifying fatty synthesis pathways and consolidated strategies used for specific fatty acid-rich lipid production via metabolic engineering, strain domestication. In addition, this mini-review summarized the effects of culture conditions on fatty acid profiles in R. toruloides. Phenolic compounds have become a severe environmental concern due to water contamination, affecting the sustainability of the ecosystem. The microalgae enzymes have enticed for the efficient involvement in the biodegradation of phenolics compound in metabolic processes. In this investigation, the oleaginous microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana was cultured heterotrophically under the influence of phenol and p-nitrophenol. The enzymatic assays of algal cell extracts were used to decipher the underlying mechanisms for phenol and p-nitrophenol biodegradation. A reduction of 99.58% and 97.21% in phenol and p-nitrophenol values, respectively, was recorded after the 10th day of microalgae cultivation. Also, the biochemical components in phenol, p-nitrophenol, and control were found to be 39.6 ± 2.3%, 36.7 ± 1.3%, and 30.9 ± 1.8% (total lipids); 27.4 ± 1.4%, 28.3 ± 1.8%, and 19.7 ± 1.5% (total carbohydrates); and 26.7 ± 1.9%, 28.3 ± 1.9%, and 39.9 ± 1.2% (total proteins), respectively. The GC–MS and 1H-NMR spectroscopy attested the incidence of fatty acid methyl esters in the synthesized microalgal biodiesel. The activity of catechol 2,3-dioxygenase and hydroquinone 1,2-dioxygenase in microalgae under heterotrophic conditions has conferred the ortho- and hydroquinone pathways for phenol and p-nitrophenol biodegradation, respectively. Also, the acceleration of fatty acid profiles in microalgae is deliberated under the impact of the phenol and p-nitrophenol biodegradation process. Thus, microalgae enzymes in the metabolic degradation process of phenolic compounds encourage ecosystem sustainability and biodiesel prospects due to the increased lipid profiles of microalgae. Emerging evidence suggests that fatty acids (FAs) and their lipid mediator derivatives can induce both beneficial and detrimental effects on inflammatory processes and joint degradation in osteoarthritis (OA) and autoimmune-driven rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The present study characterized the detailed FA signatures of synovial membranes collected during knee replacement surgery of age- and gender-matched OA and RA patients (n = 8/diagnosis). The FA composition of total lipids was determined by gas chromatography and analyzed with univariate and multivariate methods supplemented with hierarchical clustering (HC), random forest (RF)-based classification of FA signatures, and FA metabolism pathway analysis. RA synovium lipids were characterized by reduced proportions of shorter-chain saturated FAs (SFAs) and elevated percentages of longer-chain SFAs and monounsaturated FAs, alkenyl chains, and C20 n-6 polyunsaturated FAs compared to OA synovium lipids. In HC, FAs and FA-derived variables clustered into distinct groups, which preserved the discriminatory power of the individual variables in predicting the RA and OA inflammatory states. In RF classification, SFAs and 20:3n-6 were among the most important FAs distinguishing RA and OA. Pathway analysis suggested that elongation reactions of particular long-chain FAs would have increased relevance in RA. The present study was able to determine the individual FAs, FA groups, and pathways that distinguished the more inflammatory RA from OA. The findings suggest modifications of FA elongation and metabolism of 20:4n-6, glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids, and plasmalogens in the chronically inflamed RA synovium. Investigation on the physiochemical nature involved in the production of fatty acid catalyzed by the vesicles is of importance to understand the digestion of lipid. In this paper, the effects of crowding degree, which was constructed by polyethylene glycol (PEG), on the autocatalytic production of fatty acid with different chain lengths was studied. The results showed that the higher crowding degree led to the slower production rate of decanoic acid but the faster rate of oleic acid. The reason lies in that the presence of macromolecules resulted in the increased sizes of decanoic acid vesicles, but decreased sizes of oleic acid vesicles. Meanwhile, decanoic acid vesicles in more crowded medium exhibited viscous behavior, whereas oleic acid displayed elastic behavior. This research provides useful information for understanding the unusual autocatalyzed production of fatty acid in macromolecular crowding and may also draw an attention to the physiologically relevant lipid digestion. The study focuses on the fatty acid composition of the lipids and their potential biological activity. The systemic RNAi-defective (SID) transmembrane family member 2 (SIDT2) is a putative nucleic acid channel or transporter that plays essential roles in nucleic acid transport and lipid metabolism. Here, we report the cryo-electron microscopy (EM) structures of human SIDT2, which forms a tightly packed dimer with extensive interactions mediated by two previously uncharacterized extracellular/luminal β-strand-rich domains and the unique transmembrane domain (TMD). The TMD of each SIDT2 protomer contains eleven transmembrane helices (TMs), and no discernible nucleic acid conduction pathway has been identified within the TMD, suggesting that it may act as a transporter. Intriguingly, TM3-6 and TM9-11 form a large cavity with a putative catalytic zinc atom coordinated by three conserved histidine residues and one aspartate residue lying approximately 6 Å from the extracellular/luminal surface of the membrane. Notably, SIDT2 can hydrolyze C18 ceramide into sphingosine and fatty acid with a slow rate. The information presented advances the understanding of the structure-function relationships in the SID1 family proteins. The SID-1 family is a putative channel/transporter for transporting nucleic acids. Lipid and fatty acid modifications induced by the effects of various salinity patterns on the juvenile pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha (the Olkhovka River and the White Sea) within the experiment have been revealed. Concentrations of steroids, saturated fatty acids, and signaling molecules such as phospholipids (phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylinositol) and arachidonic acid under the hyperosmotic stress-related effects (keeping the fish for 1 h in the seawater after the time of transfer from the freswater) tend to increase. Decreases in phosphatidylcholine and n-6 saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids are recorded in the juvenile pink salmon fish kept for 24 h in the seawater after the time of transfer them from the freswater, while the levels of phosphatidylethanolamine and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (especially eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids), on the contrary, tend to rise significantly. Lipid composition modifications in the juvenile pink salmon fish kept under the hypoosmotic stress conditions (24 h in freshwater after 24 h in seawater) induce stabilization of functioning the cell membrane structure, since the levels of bioeffectors including phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylinositol, and arachidonic, eicosapentaenoic, and docosahexaenoic acids tend to decrease. A reduced amount of lipids (triacylglycerols) stored as an energy reserve is shown for all the experimental fish groups. The outcomes indicate the high levels of adaptive potential of the juvenile pink salmon fish kept under the effects of abrupt salinity change in the water environments and their readiness for downstream migration not long before leaving the nests. Nutrient deficiency induces a variety of cellular responses, including an increase in lipid accumulation in microalgae. Nitrogen starvation is the most studied deprivation. Here, we determine the effects of phosphorus and sulfur limitation on lipid accumulation in Chlorella vulgaris. A set of 9 experiments were performed, varying the initial concentration of these nutrients (set to 0, 50, and 100% of their original composition in Bold's basal medium). According to our results, the variation of P and S modified the specific growth rate, lag phase, and cell generation time. The ratio of 50%P and 0%S significantly increased the total lipid concentration. The fatty acid profile was dominated by C16:0, C18:0, and C18:1; a considerable increase in C20:5 was observed with 0%P and 50%S and 0%P and 100%S. Regarding neutral lipids, the response surface methodology (RSM) indicates that the maximum was observed when S was between 40 and 60% and P was between 95 and 100%. A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of zinc supply (0, 1, and 2 mM Zn as ZnSO4) on morpho-physiological and biochemical parameters of caraway (Carum carvi L.). Exposure to different Zn concentrations for 12 weeks compromised severely all growth parameters (plant height, number of secondary branches, diameter of primary and secondary branches, fresh and dry weight of aerial parts and roots) yield and its components (number of umbels per primary branches and secondary branches; number of umbel per plant; number of seeds per plant; and the weight of 1000 seeds). These manifestations were intimately linked with excessive accumulation of Zn in roots and leaves, alteration of the content of photosynthetic pigments, and extended lipid peroxidation. A manifest increment of proline and soluble sugar content was also observed in response to Zn application. Lipid content in seeds was dropped in Zn-treated plants and the fatty acid profiles were profoundly affected as they were enriched with saturated fatty acids at the expense of unsaturated ones. While improving their oxidative stability as revealed by the reduced values calculated oxidizability and oxidative susceptibility, Zn treatment reduced the lipid nutritional quality of caraway seeds. Moreover, Zn treatment reduced the essential oil yield and its main component carvone while it enhanced the content of its precursor limonene. It also induced alteration of terpene metabolism as revealed in the redirection of the carbon flux to the shikimate/phenylpropanoid pathway resulting in the stimulation of the production of phenolic compounds and their subsequent antioxidant activities. Fatty acids and carotenoids are known to have roles in embryonic and larval development of sea cucumbers, but their changes in gonads during gametogenesis have not yet been studied. To improve our knowledge of the reproductive cycle of sea cucumbers in an aquaculture perspective, we collected 6–11 individuals of the species Holothuria (Panningothuria) forskali Delle Chiaje, 1823 approximately every 2 months from December 2019 to July 2021 east of the Glenan Islands (Brittany – France; 47.710°N, 3.948°W) at a depth of 8–12 m. Our results show that soon after spawning, sea cucumbers take advantage of an increased food availability in spring to rapidly and opportunistically accumulate nutrients in the form of lipids in their gonads (from May to July) and then slowly elongate, desaturate and probably rearrange fatty acids within lipid classes for the next reproductive season according to the specific requirements of both sexes. In contrast, acquisition of carotenoids occurs synchronously with gonads filling and/or through the reabsorption of spent tubules (T5), thus revealing little seasonal variations at the scale of the entire gonad in terms of relative abundance in both sexes. All results suggest that gonads are fully replenished with nutrients by October and that broodstock for induced reproduction could be captured at this moment and kept until the production of larvae is required. Maintaining broodstock for consecutive years would probably be a higher level challenge as the dynamics of tubule recruitment are not fully understood and seem to last for several years. A comparative study of the lipid and fatty acid composition of Atlantic salmon underyearlings reared under natural and continuous light in commercial aquaculture in the summer–autumn period in North Ossetia–Alania was carried out. The change in the main indicators of lipid metabolism in salmon underyearlings from September to November was found to have a stable trend aimed at preparing juveniles for smoltification. A change in key fatty acid indicators was detected: an increase in the content of PUFAs due to (n-3)PUFAs, and the "marine" type of PUFA due to 22:6(n-3), high values of the ratios (n-3)/(n-6) PUFA, 18:3(n-3)/18:2(n-6), 22:6(n-3)/18:3(n-3). This study has shown the stimulating effect of the combined and stable action of the continuous photoperiod and feeding in the summer–autumn period in the preparation for smoltification of Atlantic salmon fingerlings grown under aquaculture conditions. Yarrowia lipolytica, a dimorphic yeast belonging to the Ascomycota, has potent abilities to utilize hydrophobic compounds, such as n-alkanes and fatty acids, as carbon and energy sources. Yarrowia lipolytica can synthesize and accumulate large amounts of lipids, making it a promising host to produce various lipids and convert n-alkanes to useful compounds. For advanced use of Y. lipolytica in these applications, it is necessary to understand the metabolism of these hydrophobic compounds in this yeast and the underlying molecular mechanisms. In this review, current knowledge on the n-alkane metabolism and how this is regulated in Y. lipolytica is summarized. Furthermore, recent studies revealed that lipid transfer proteins are involved in the utilization of n-alkanes and the regulation of cell morphology in response to n-alkanes. Lipids are key compounds in the transfer of energy and nutrients in marine food webs. Specifically, neutral lipids are the main reservoir of dietary energy in most marine animals and are often used as indicators of nutritional condition. In contrast, polar lipids, including acetone-mobile polar lipids and phospholipids, are key structural components of cell membranes. Here, we explored the fatty acid (FA) composition across the neutral and polar lipid fractions in benthic organisms belonging to five major phyla (Arthropoda, Cnidaria, Echinodermata, Mollusca, and Porifera), which were collected from a deep-water region in the Northwest Atlantic. Overall, the FA composition of acetone-mobile polar lipids (e.g., glycolipids) and phospholipids was more similar to each other and characterized by higher proportions of saturated FA (e.g., 16:0) compared to that of neutral lipids. This result reflected the different functions (structural vs storage) of these lipid fractions. Furthermore, independently of the taxon, monounsaturated FA (e.g., 16:1ω7, 18:1ω9) were dominant in neutral lipids, suggesting their preferential utilization for energy production. Whereas several species, including the gastropod Buccinum sp., retained the essential polyunsaturated FA (i.e., ω3 and ω6 FA) in their neutral lipids, others, such as the crustacean Pasiphaea tarda and the echinoderm Phormosoma placenta incorporated them into their polar lipids, pointing to differences in the metabolism of essential FA across species. These findings highlight the value of quantifying differences among lipid fractions. Lipids synthesized by oleaginous yeasts are considered to be the best candidates for biodiesel production. Cryptococcus humicola as an oleaginous yeast accumulated lipid in cells. In order to optimize the conditions for lipid production, different carbon and nitrogen sources were used and metals were added into the medium. Ca2+ addition increased the lipid production greatly. Xylose and peptone were optimal carbon source and nitrogen source, respectively for lipid accumulation. Response surface experiment results revealed that the accumulation of lipid could be maximized when the xylose, peptone and Ca2+ concentration was 61 g/L, 4.31 g/L, 0.67 mmol/L. C16 and C18 fatty acid account for about 91% of the total fatty acids. The most abundant fatty acid was oleic acid (42.68%), followed by palmitic acid (29.7%) and stearic acid (13.87%). The addition of Ca2+ increased the content of unsaturated fatty acids (such as C16:1 and C18:1) and improved the unsaturation of fatty acids. Quantitative real time PCR analysis revealed that expression of genes related to lipid biosynthesis showed up-regulated by Ca2+ treatment. The present study sought to evaluate the secondary wastewater from dairy industry as a culture medium for Monoraphidium contortum, in bench-scale tubular photobioreactor, aiming at tertiary wastewater treatment and microalgae biomass production. Since the used secondary wastewater contained residual phosphorus (P) but negligible residual nitrogen (N), we also evaluated the nitrogen supplementation, following Redfield ratio (N:P = 16:1) and the same N:P proportion of Bold Medium (N:P = 1.71:1). These cultures were compared to secondary wastewater without N and Bold Medium (control). Secondary wastewater without N addition provided lower values of maximum biomass concentration, indicating the importance of this supplementation. The nitrogen supplementation following Bold Medium represented the best protocol, since biomass productivity was higher than that in control culture, but with lower nitrogen addition (in comparison with the supplementation following Redfield proportion). The composition of polar lipid classes and the composition of fatty acids of neutral and polar lipid fractions were studied in tissues of the brown alga Undaria pinnatifida infected with the endophyte Laminariocolax aecidioides. For the first time, the lipid glucuronosyldiacylglycerol was found in brown algae; while ceramide phosphoinositol, diacylglyceryltrimethylhomoserine, and diacylglycerylhydroxymethyltrimethyl-β-alanine were also found for the first time in significant amounts in algae of the order Laminariales. It has been established that presence of the endophyte leads to a decrease in the contents of phosphatidylinositol and ceramide phosphoinositol, to a significant increase in the concentration of saturated fatty acids, and to a decrease in the content of ω3 polyunsaturated acids in neutral lipids. Nitric oxide (NO) is a signaling molecule controlling several steps of plant development and defense process under stress conditions. NO-induced alleviation of manganese (Mn) toxicity was investigated on bean plants submitted for 28 days to 500 µM MnCl2. Manganese excess decreased plant dry weight and elongation and increased levels of reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation leading to up-regulation of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase activities. The inhibitory effects of Mn on plant growth were associated to reduction of light-saturated carbon assimilation (Amax), stomatal conductance (gs), and transpiration (E). By contrast, Mn induced significant increase in the apparent quantum yield (ɸ) and light compensation point (LCP). Interestingly, intracellular CO2 (Ci) remains stable under Mn stress. Concomitantly, leaf membrane lipids have drastically reduced under high Mn concentration. After Mn exposition, leaf fatty acids exhibited a significant loss of linolenic acid, accompanied by an accumulation of palmitoleic, stearic, and linoleic acids leading to alteration of lipid desaturation. NO supply reversed Mn toxicity as evidenced by enhancement of growth biomass and recovery of Amax, E, ɸ, and LCP. Similarly, NO addition has positive effects on leaf lipid content and composition leading to restoration of lipid unsaturation. The modulation of fatty acid composition can be a way to reduce leaf membrane damages and maintain optimal photosynthesis and plant growth. Despite the absence of enough evidences in how NO is involved in lipid and photosynthesis recovery under Mn stress conditions, it is assumed that NO beneficial effects are attributable to NO/Mn cross-talk. Purpose: Human milk (HM) composition is influenced by factors, like maternal diet and body stores, among other factors. For evaluating the influence of maternal fatty acid (FA) status on milk FA composition, the correlation between FA content in HM and in maternal plasma, erythrocytes, and adipose tissue was investigated. Methods: 223 European women who delivered at term, provided HM samples over first four months of lactation. Venous blood and adipose tissue (only from mothers who consented and underwent a C-section delivery) were sampled at delivery. FAs were assessed in plasma, erythrocytes, adipose tissue, and HM. Evolution of HM FAs over lactation and correlations between FA content in milk and tissues and between mother's blood and cord blood were established. Results: During lactation, arachidonic acid (ARA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) significantly decreased, while linoleic acid (LA), alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) remained stable. Positive correlations were observed between HM and adipose tissue for palmitic, stearic, oleic, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Correlations were found between milk and plasma for oleic, LA, ARA, ALA, DHA, monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), and PUFAs. No correlation was observed between erythrocytes and HM FAs. LA and ALA were more concentrated in maternal blood than in infant blood, contrary to ARA and DHA, supporting that biomagnification of LCPUFAs may have occurred during pregnancy. Conclusions: These data show that maternal adipose tissue rather than erythrocytes may serve as reservoir of PUFAs and LCPUFAs for human milk. Plasma also supplies PUFAs and LCPUFAs to maternal milk. If both, adipose tissue and plasma PUFAs, are reflection of dietary intake, it is necessary to provide PUFAs and LCPUFAs during pregnancy or even before conception and lactation to ensure availability for mothers and enough supply for the infant via HM. The composition of fatty acids in the biomass of juvenile Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) grown in aquaculture to supplement the number of sturgeon populations in the Yenisei River was studied. To study the dynamics of fatty acids composition during growth, juveniles were studied at different stages of postembryonic development: during periods of endogenous and exogenous nutrition. It was found that the food source has a significant influence on the composition of fatty acids in the juvenile biomass. Saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids are used by juvenile Siberian sturgeon as energy sources for growth and development. Polyunsaturated fatty acids and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) tended to accumulation in biomass from the prelarva stage up to the fingerling stage. The content of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and DHA (mg g–1) significantly decreases by the fingerling stage due to a decrease in the total content of fatty acids in the biomass of juvenile sturgeon. However, the levels of EPA and DHA in the biomass of Siberian sturgeon fingerlings before release into their natural habitat were relatively high, which may contribute to the development of the necessary adaptive responses and a high survival rate of juveniles. The holothurian Eupentacta fraudatrix is widely used for studying how regeneration works and as a source of biological active compounds. Data on the lipid content and composition of E. fraudatrix are limited to the description of fatty acid (FA) composition. The storage and structural lipids of E. fraudatrix gut have been analyzed by different chromatographic and mass spectrometry methods. Triacylglycerols, as storage lipids, are characterized by a high concentration of trophic FA markers. Among structural lipids, phosphatidylethanolamines and phosphatidylcholines contain a high concentration of molecular species with a simple ether linkage. Phosphatidylserines (PS) and phosphatidylinositols (PI) differ from other lipids with very-long-chain FA in composition. The FA 23:1n-9, which is characteristic of holothurians, has been detected in PS and PI. In recent years, with the global climate change, the intensity, frequency and duration of drought have increased significantly, which has become the main limiting factor for agricultural development in many areas. Glycine betaine (GB) is an effective stress-resistant substance. In this experiment, the effects of the genetic engineering of GB synthesis on photosynthetic apparatus of tobacco under drought stress were studied using transgenic tobacco (T) accumulating GB and wild-type tobacco (K326, WT). Potted tobaccos were subjected to drought stress (controlled irrigation, 25 °C ± 1 °C, a relative humidity: 75–80%) for 9 days, photosynthetic gas exchange parameters, chlorophyll a fluorescence, structure of chloroplast and thylakoid membrane, and protein function of thylakoid membrane were examined under different drought stress time (days). The results showed that T tobacco could accumulate GB and the accumulated GB improved the resistance of the photosynthetic apparatus to drought stress. Under drought stress, the damage of chloroplast and thylakoid lamellae in T tobacco was less than that in WT tobacco, the accumulation of GB in T tobacco could maintain the stability of thylakoid membrane, improved the unsaturated fatty acid index (IUFA) of thylakoid membrane lipid, increased the contents of digalactosyl diacylglycerol (DGDG) and phosphatidylglycerol (PG), and decreased the ratio of monogalactosyl diaylglycerol (MGDG) to DGDG. In addition, under drought stress, the accumulation of GB in T tobacco alleviated the photo-inhibition of PSII, and the increase of xanthophyll cycle de-epoxidation may be one of the reasons for the enhancement of PSII function. The obtained results on the study of the antimicrobial activity of lipid extracts of tissues of starfishes Linckia laevigata and Culcita novaeguineae and sea urchin Diadema setosum collected in the Nhatrang Bay (South China Sea) against nosocomial strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecium, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida sp., Streptococcus pyogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus are presented. The effect of the investigated extracts on Gram-positive, Gram-negative microorganisms, as well as yeast of the genus Candida, was determined. It was found that lipid extracts of echinoderms of the Nhatrang Bay exhibit the highest antimicrobial activity against the Gram-positive microorganisms, namely Streptococcus pyogenes.
