Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is one of the most catastrophic and life threatening health issue nowadays. Early detection of CVD is an important solution to reduce its devastating effects on health. In this paper, an efficient CVD detection algorithm is identified. The algorithm uses patient demographic data as inputs, along with several ECG signal features extracted automatically through signal processing techniques. Cross-validation results show a 98.29 % accuracy for the decision tree classification algorithm. The algorithm has been integrated into a web based system that can be used at anytime by patients to check their heart health status. At one end of the system is the ECG sensor attached to the patient's body, while at the other end is the detection algorithm. Distribution shifts remain a problem for the safe application of regulated medical AI systems, and may impact their real-world performance if undetected. Postmarket shifts can occur for example if algorithms developed on data from various acquisition settings and a heterogeneous population are predominantly applied in hospitals with lower quality data acquisition or other centre-specific acquisition factors, or where some ethnicities are over-represented. Therefore, distribution shift detection could be important for monitoring AI-based medical products during postmarket surveillance. We implemented and evaluated three deep-learning based shift detection techniques (classifier-based, deep kernel, and multiple univariate kolmogorov-smirnov tests) on simulated shifts in a dataset of 130'486 retinal images. We trained a deep learning classifier for diabetic retinopathy grading. We then simulated population shifts by changing the prevalence of patients' sex, ethnicity, and co-morbidities, and example acquisition shifts by changes in image quality. We observed classification subgroup performance disparities w.r.t. image quality, patient sex, ethnicity and co-morbidity presence. The sensitivity at detecting referable diabetic retinopathy ranged from 0.50 to 0.79 for different ethnicities. This motivates the need for detecting shifts after deployment. Classifier-based tests performed best overall, with perfect detection rates for quality and co-morbidity subgroup shifts at a sample size of 1000. It was the only method to detect shifts in patient sex, but required large sample sizes ( > 3 0 ′ 000 ). All methods identified easier-to-detect out-of-distribution shifts with small (≤300) sample sizes. We conclude that effective tools exist for detecting clinically relevant distribution shifts. The principles of irrigation and drainage in cracking soils differ markedly from non-cracking soils, and are not thoroughly understood. This paper presents a conceptual model to simulate water and salt flows in cracking soils of the Imperial Valley, CA, in the presence of ground water that contributes partially to ET demand of crops. A salt reactivity function is introduced in the model to account for mineral precipitation (salt deposition) and mineral dissolution (salt pick up). The conceptual water flow model assumes that surface irrigation water moves into the cracks, infiltrates horizontally to wet the soil profile and a fraction bypasses below the root zone into the shallow ground water and is retained for later crop extraction via upflow. Then, water drains vertically through the soil profile step by step, and root water extractions are calculated. When ET exceeds available water upflow of ground water is calculated. Provision for reclamation leaching before the next crop is also made. The associated conceptual salt transport model involves complete mixing of invading and resident soil water. Salt concentration from ET is subjected to a salt reactivity function to obtain salt deposition of calcite and gypsum to obtain salt concentration after precipitation. This reactivity function is also used in the inverse when two or more waters mix to transform salt after precipitation to salt concentration after ET. The flow of salts follows the water transport algorithum. The model has been applied to a point in the Imperial Valley and observed data from Bali et al. () was used for calibration. Embedding of diagnostic and health care information requires secure encryption and watermarking. This research paper presents a comprehensive study for the behavior of some well established watermarking algorithms in frequency domain for the preservation of stroke-based diagnostic parameters. Two different sets of watermarking algorithms namely: two correlation-based (binary logo hiding) and two singular value decomposition (SVD)-based (gray logo hiding) watermarking algorithms are used for embedding ownership logo. The diagnostic parameters in atherosclerotic plaque ultrasound video are namely: (a) bulb identification and recognition which consists of identifying the bulb edge points in far and near carotid walls; (b) carotid bulb diameter; and (c) carotid lumen thickness all along the carotid artery. The tested data set consists of carotid atherosclerotic movies taken under IRB protocol from University of Indiana Hospital, USA-AtheroPoint™ (Roseville, CA, USA) joint pilot study. ROC (receiver operating characteristic) analysis was performed on the bulb detection process that showed an accuracy and sensitivity of 100 % each, respectively. The diagnostic preservation (DP) for SVD-based approach was above 99 % with PSNR (Peak signal-to-noise ratio) above 41, ensuring the retention of diagnostic parameter devalorization as an effect of watermarking. The Study to Explore Early Development (SEED) is a multi-site case-control study designed to explore the relationship between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) phenotypes and etiologies. The goals of this paper are to (1) describe the SEED algorithm that uses the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) and Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) to classify children with ASD, (2) examine psychometric properties of different ASD classification methods, including the SEED method that incorporates rules for resolving ADI-R and ADOS discordance, and (3) determine whether restricted interests and repetitive behaviors were noted for children who had instrument discordance resolved using ADI-R social and communication scores. The quality of propensity scores is traditionally measured by assessing how well they make the distributions of covariates in the treatment and control groups match, which we refer to as 'good balance'. Good balance guarantees less biased estimates of the treatment effect. However, the cost of achieving good balance is that the variance of the estimates increases due to a reduction in effective sample size, either through the introduction of propensity score weights or dropping cases when propensity score matching. In this paper, we investigate whether it is best to optimize the balance or to settle for a less than optimal balance and use double robust estimation to adjust for remaining differences. We compare treatment effect estimates from regression, propensity score weighting, and double robust estimation with varying levels of effort expended to achieve balance using data from a study about the differences in outcomes by HIV status in heterosexually active homeless men residing in Los Angeles. Because of how costly data collection efforts are for this population, it is important to find an alternative estimation method that does not reduce effective sample size as much as methods that aggressively aim to optimize balance. Results from a simulation study suggest that there are instances in which we can obtain more precise treatment effect estimates without increasing bias too much by using a combination of regression and propensity score weights that achieve a less than optimal balance. There is a bias-variance tradeoff at work in propensity score estimation; every step toward better balance usually means an increase in variance and at some point a marginal decrease in bias may not be worth the associated increase in variance. While existing fairness work typically focuses on fair-by-design algorithms, here we consider making a fairness-unaware algorithm's output fairer. Specifically, we explore the area of fairness in clustering by modifying clusterings produced by existing algorithms to make them fairer whilst retaining their quality. We formulate the minimal cluster modification for fairness (MCMF) problem, where the input is a given partitional clustering and the goal is to minimally change it so that the clustering is still of good quality but fairer. We show that for a single binary protected status variable, the problem is efficiently solvable (i.e., in the class P) by proving that the constraint matrix for an integer linear programming formulation is totally unimodular. Interestingly, we show that even for a single protected variable, the addition of simple pairwise guidance for clustering (to say ensure individual-level fairness) makes the MCMF problem computationally intractable (i.e., NP-hard). Experimental results using Twitter, Census and NYT data sets show that our methods can modify existing clusterings for data sets in excess of 100,000 instances within minutes on laptops and find clusterings that are as fair but are of higher quality than those produced by fair-by-design clustering algorithms. Finally, we explore a challenging practical problem of making a historical clustering (i.e., zipcodes clustered into California's congressional districts) fairer using a new multi-faceted benchmark data set. The article reports on the research conducted by Kirsten Howley of the University of California regarding the M32, the spiral galaxy near the Milky Way and NGC205, a nearby dwarf elliptical galaxy, in California. Researchers used a genetic algorithm to determine that NGC205 is swinging around M31 and found NGC 205 was zipping past M31 at hundreds of kilometres per second, close to its escape velocity. NCG 205's motion is perpendicular to, and therefore independent of, a streamer of stars that is associated with it.

The Reverse Tracing of Precursors (RTP) algorithm for the prediction of strong earthquakes has become known owing to the successful predictions of the Tokachi-oki earthquake near Hokkaido Island and the San Simeon earthquake of California in 2003, as well as to other well-documented predictions found on the Internet, some of which also proved to be successful. The RTP predictions with the use of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) data for the zone from Honshu Island to the Middle Kurile Islands deserve special attention. None of the five predictions starting in the middle of 2003, including the last one formulated for the region where the catastrophic earthquake of March 11, 2011, with a magnitude of M = 9 occurred, was a false alarm. One distinctive feature of predictions for this region is the enormous size (about 1000 km) of alarm regions. At the same time, the relatively short alarm interval makes it possible to record a real number of earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.2 and higher during alarm periods, which is about five times larger than on average over the equivalent period, i.e., to reach a probability gain of about five. The soundscape was recorded in four selected places in Sequoia National Park CA, to quantify and assess the diurnal and seasonal character of the park's soundscape. The recording sites were selected to represent a combination of elevation and vegetation diversity. Hour-long sound recordings were made by four individuals at each place during fall, spring, summer and winter at dawn, midday, dusk, and midnight with identical recording instrumentation. The recordings of the soundscape were made in an old growth forest (Crescent Meadow), in a foothill oak savanna (Sycamore Spring), in an upland savanna chaparral (Shepherd Saddle) and in a foothill riparian location adjacent to the Kiawah River (Buckeye Flat). Sound recordings were analyzed using a normalized Power Spectral Density (PSD) algorithm and partitioned into 1 kHz intervals based on 12 subsamples from each of the 64 h-long sound recordings. Biological signals (biophony) were based on the highest PSD value within the range of 2-8 kHz. A multilevel analysis (MLA) was used to examine temporal patterns of biophony at four locations in Sequoia National Park. Unsupervised Landsat Thematic Mapper Satellite Imagery identified 25 vegetation regimes in Sequoia National Park.
