Trophic ecology and resource use are challenging to discern in migratory marine species, including sharks. However, effective management and conservation strategies depend on understanding these life history details. Here we investigate whether dental enameloid zinc isotope (δ66Znen) values can be used to infer intrapopulation differences in foraging ecology by comparing δ66Znen with same-tooth collagen carbon and nitrogen (δ13Ccoll, δ15Ncoll) values from critically endangered sand tiger sharks (Carcharias taurus) from Delaware Bay (USA). We document ontogeny and sex-related isotopic differences indicating distinct diet and habitat use at the time of tooth formation. Adult females have the most distinct isotopic niche, likely feeding on higher trophic level prey in a distinct habitat. This multi-proxy approach characterises an animal's isotopic niche in greater detail than traditional isotope analysis alone and shows that δ66Znen analysis can highlight intrapopulation dietary variability thereby informing conservation management and, due to good δ66Znen fossil tooth preservation, palaeoecological reconstructions. Elasmobranchs, which include sharks and batoids, play critical roles in maintaining the integrity and stability of marine food webs. However, these cartilaginous fish are among the most threatened vertebrate lineages due to their widespread depletion. Consequently, understanding dynamics and predicting changes of elasmobranch communities are major research topics in conservation ecology. Here, we leverage long-term catch data from a standardized bottom trawl survey conducted from 1996 to 2019, to evaluate the spatio-temporal dynamics of the elasmobranch community in the heavily exploited Adriatic Sea, where these fish have historically been depleted. We use joint species distribution modeling to quantify the responses of the species to environmental variation while also including important traits such as species age at first maturity, reproductive mode, trophic level, and phylogenetic information. We present spatio-temporal changes in the species community and associated modification of the trait composition, highlighting strong spatial and depth-mediated patterning. We observed an overall increase in the abundance of the dominant elasmobranch species, except for spurdog, which has shown a continued decline. However, our results showed that the present community displays lower age at first maturity and a smaller fraction of viviparous species compared to the earlier observed community due to changes in species' relative abundance. The selected traits contributed considerably to explaining community patterns, suggesting that the integration of trait-based approaches in elasmobranch community analyses can aid efforts to conserve this important lineage of fish. In the late century of 1800 till mid-1900s, large predators were eradicated worldwide, and bounties were commonly used to get rid of the predators. In the twentieth century the policy changed, and predators became protected by law. The "return" of the predators has resulted in negative human–wildlife interactions and an increase in social conflicts. Media plays a key role in most social conflicts, as positive portrayals can lead to an increased willingness to conserve the species, as opposed to negative portrayals. We have looked at how Norwegian newspapers portray the large predators from when they were protected by law in the 1970's till today. Our results show that wolves represent the most articles, and the positive mentioning of wolves has decreased, while for bears this has increased. Local newspapers contained more negative portrayals than national newspapers, and changes in wolf establishment, predator management or politics impact on the number of articles. As our findings indicate that negative experiences with predators, in particular in local areas, associate with negative articles in the local newspapers, we believe this could contribute to negative attitudes towards predators among those who are readers of the local newspapers. In this paper, we investigated composition and trait turnover among fish assemblages in reservoirs distributed across major Brazilian basins, in order to contrast taxonomic and functional turnover and to investigate their respective drivers. We investigated the hypothesis that reservoir assemblages present, on a continental scale, divergent species compositions but with a similar set of traits. Species lists and functional traits were compiled from 79 reservoirs located in the Amazon, São Francisco, Paraná and Atlantic basins. We observed considerable variation in species and trait composition among reservoirs, with higher intra-basin similarity. Taxonomic turnover ranged between 0 and 1 (0.44 ± 0.22 SD), and functional turnover between 0 and 0.91 (0.37 ± 0.19); functional turnover correlated positively with taxonomic turnover, but showed lower values. Observed functional turnover values did not differ from null expectations, indicating lack of functional convergence. We detected significant effects of basin, longitude, latitude and elevation on turnover values, and the presence of non-native species was associated with either homogenization or differentiation patterns. Our results indicated that fish composition is heterogeneous among impoundments, providing little support to the hypothesis that reservoir assemblages are homogenized on a continental scale. Tracking fish consumption could provide additional information on changes to fish stocks, one of the planet's main protein sources. We used data on seafood consumption in fishing villages in Brazil over time to test for changes in: species richness, diversity, and composition, fish size and trophic levels, consumption of endangered species, and functional diversity (namely, species with different behavioral and habitat preferences). Our results demonstrate the potential to include this additional data source to complement fisheries data, especially in data-poor countries. With respect to Brazil specifically, we identified a decrease in both the average trophic level and size of the species consumed. While the consumption of endangered species had always been low, most of these species changed over time, thereby suggesting that many, especially elasmobranchs, may have become rare on the plates. Although it may be hard to fully isolate cultural changes from biodiversity changes when it comes to analyzing consumption data, by examining diets it is possible to identify aspects worth investigating further, such as, whether the decrease in dietary trophic levels mirrors a decrease in environmental trophic levels. In places where fisheries data are either inexistent or limited, diet track surveys, such as household expenditure programs, can help trace the changes caused by fisheries in stocks and habitats. With the aim of assessing whether hydrological alterations differently affect non-native and native fish species in coastal systems, we investigated fish assemblages along the fluvio-estuarine ecotone of the Neotropical São João River, Brazil. During a year, samplings with standardized efforts and limnological parameter records were carried out bimonthly at 15 sampling points in the last 50 km of the São João River, representing natural (meandering riverine and estuarine) and modified (reservoir, channelized and drained floodplain) stretches. We recorded 48 marine and 51 freshwater fish species, with 12 non-native species among the latter. Several native species were exclusively found within natural stretches, whereas non-native species presented significantly higher biomass catches in modified stretches. Only three species occurred in the entire study area, all of which were non-native species. Non-native species were associated with low dissolved oxygen and pH levels below the dam, whereas native freshwater species responded negatively to water transparency, and marine species responded positively to water conductivity at the hydrologically unaltered points. The hydrological alterations disrupted the fluvio-estuarine ecotone of the lower São João River, which plays the role of a dispersion source for non-native species and where invasive species are favored. The construction of dams in Brazilian semiarid regions has been a common governmental practice since the early 1900s, initially with the aim of providing water to meet the needs of humans and animals, and, later, to improve fisheries. Along with dams, several nonnative fish species were introduced with the intention of supplying new fisheries. We used a dataset compiled since the 1950s for the following: (i) evaluate fisheries for native and nonnative species across space–time scales and (ii) quantify the spatial and temporal changes in taxonomic and functional similarity of freshwater fish assemblages in semiarid reservoirs. Overall, fisheries for native species decreased over time, while fisheries for nonnative species increased during the early periods, which then, for the most part, decreased after 2000. At the Inter-region scale, we recorded a transition from homogenization to differentiation over time, both in taxonomic and functional terms. At the Intra-region scale, we also found a transition phase from taxonomic homogenization to differentiation over time, while functional differentiation was recorded for most of the regions. This study highlights the variation in fisheries for native and nonnative species over a period of ~ 70 years, and the homogenization dynamics of Brazil's semiarid freshwater fish resulting from the construction of dams, stocking programs, and aquaculture using nonnative species. The conservation challenges facing freshwater ecosystems necessitate broadening our science from understanding individual species loss to anticipating multi-faceted changes to biodiversity. In recent decades, the process of biotic homogenization by which regional biotas become more similar through time has attracted considerable attention. Here, we (1) quantified spatial and temporal changes in taxonomic and functional similarity of fish assemblages among Neotropical reservoirs, (2) determined nonnative species contributions to changes in taxonomic and functional composition, and (3) evaluated relationships between the changes in taxonomic and functional similarity among reservoirs. We did so by considering different spatial scales: inter- and intra-ecoregions. At inter-ecoregion scale, reservoir fish assemblages have become taxonomically homogenized over time, whereas functional trait composition has tended to differentiate. At intra-ecoregion scale, we detected both taxonomic and functional differentiation over time. Despite these overall trends, different ecoregions exhibited considerable variation in patterns of fish faunal homogenization and differentiation. We found a moderate positive relationship between changes in mean taxonomic and functional similarity among reservoirs at inter-ecoregion scale, which was no longer evident within ecoregions. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the strong scale-dependence of perceived patterns in homogenization, and further highlights the magnitude of threats to freshwater biodiversity in the Neotropical ecosystems. Species-specific monitoring through large shark fin market surveys has been a valuable data source to estimate global catches and international shark fin trade dynamics. Hong Kong and Guangzhou, mainland China, are the largest shark fin markets and consumption centers in the world. We used molecular identification protocols on randomly collected processed fin trimmings (n = 2000) and non-parametric species estimators to investigate the species composition of the Guangzhou retail market and compare the species diversity between the Guangzhou and Hong Kong shark fin retail markets. Species diversity was similar between both trade hubs with a small subset of species dominating the composition. The blue shark (Prionace glauca) was the most common species overall followed by the CITES-listed silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis), scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini), smooth hammerhead shark (S. zygaena) and shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus). Our results support previous indications of high connectivity between the shark fin markets of Hong Kong and mainland China and suggest that systematic studies of other fin trade hubs within Mainland China and stronger law-enforcement protocols and capacity building are needed. A global analysis of the diet of chondrichthyes (23 species) was conducted during one bottom-trawl research cruise in the region where the highest catches of skates occurred off southwestern Atlantic. The diet was quantified by calculating the percentage frequency of occurrence of each prey. The influence of variables total length, sex, maturity stage, predator species, morphtype (sharks, skates, batoids), and depth on the diet was evaluated by fitting generalized linear models. The diet composition of chondrichthyes consisted mainly of crustaceans, polychaetes, and fish. The study region constituted a feeding ground for the majority of chondrichthyans species analyzed. The diet of chondrichthyes exhibited inter-specific differences sorted into three major trophic guilds and global ontogenetic shift. The consumption of crustaceans and polychaetes decreases with the total length of the chondrichthyes, whereas the consumption of fish increases as the predator grew in size. In addition, prey size of fish and crabs increased with increasing body size of predator, but large chondrichthyes also continued to feed on relatively small crabs. Trophic partitioning and ontogenetic diet shifts may act synergistically, favoring the coexistence of at least 23 species of chondrichthyes at all stages of their life histories, limiting the direct competition for food. The biogeography and conservation of elasmobranch species was increasingly addressed in the recent past, but the southwestern Atlantic Ocean fauna is still one of the least studied. Reliable delimitation of the distribution range of species is fundamental to conservation and development of fisheries management strategies. A recent molecular study of the cryptic Aetobatus narinari species complex restricted that species to western and eastern coasts of the New World. However, the current distribution of A. narinari and phylogenetic relationships within the genus Aetobatus have yet to be clarified, the goal of this phylogeographic analysis. Using mitochondrial and nuclear markers we investigated specimens from the Atlantic coast of Brazil and the Pacific coast of Mexico and related them to previously analyzed specimens from other regions. Our analysis indicates that Aetobatus narinari is present only in the western Atlantic, formed by a single genetic lineage that ranges between Florida and southeastern Brazil, while the Pacific New World lineage is in fact assigned to Aetobatus laticeps. Analysis of divergence times revealed that biogeographic events such as the closure of the Tethys Sea, the formation of the Benguela barrier, and the Isthmus of Panama played major roles in diversification and dispersal of the genus Aetobatus. The Neotropical region has the greatest taxonomic and functional diversity of fish in the world. However, this biodiversity has been threatened by the introduction of non-native species. Therefore, we present a systematic review of the literature concerning the introduction of non-native fish species in Neotropical freshwaters. We examine the origins of non-native fish species, as well as the invaded ecoregions and introduction vectors. Oncorhynchus mykiss, Salmo trutta, Cichla kelberi, and Oreochromis niloticus were the most frequent introduced fish species and rivers and reservoirs were the most studied freshwater ecosystems. Impoundments, aquarium trade, sport fishing, and aquaculture were recorded as the main vectors for the introduction of non-native fish species. Most of the studies were conducted in Brazil. The Upper Parana ecoregion exhibited the largest number of non-native fish species, of which the majority originated from the Lower Parana ecoregion. We noticed that the origins of non-native fish species are linked to their introduction vectors, as several non-native fish species arrive from areas near to where they are introduced, mainly by impoundment and sport fishing. The use of multimetric indices (MMIs) became a common practice for evaluating ecological integrity of aquatic ecosystems. However, most developed MMIs ignore non-native species as an impact source to establish reference conditions. We developed an MMI to identify if non-native fish species are associated with Neotropical stream integrity by considering the presence of non-native species as an impact source. We calculated and evaluated responsiveness to the presence of non-native species using fish metrics, which were selected with a bootstrap procedure. Streams for calibration and validation were also selected with a bootstrap procedure. From the candidate MMIs generated, we selected models with different combinations of fish metrics. The generated MMIs presented a satisfactory performance in distinguishing reference streams from those impacted by non-native species. The abundance of non-native species was highly correlated with urbanization and seems to be more important than urbanization to drive native abundance loss. Our study is one of the first attempts to develop MMIs in which non-native species are considered as impact sources and used to identify impacted and reference sites. We aim to test the hypothesis that an assemblage of characid fishes coexist by partitioning food resources. We calculated dietary niche overlap of four syntopic species of the Characidae using gut content analysis. Secondly, we used a carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) isotope Bayesian mixing model to estimate relative assimilation. All characids consumed large proportions of plant material and aquatic insects; however, Pianka's index indicated low dietary overlap among species throughout most of the sampling period. The low degrees of dietary overlap were due to discrepancies in the relative consumption of Ephemeroptera and aquatic insect remains. Secondly, there was high correspondence between the gut content analyses and isotope mixing model estimates. Astyanax xiru and Bryconamericus iheringii were the only species that ingested and assimilated large fractions of aquatic plants and algae, respectively. Astyanax procerus consumed and assimilated large fractions of terrestrial invertebrates, whereas Bryconamericus sp. assimilated mainly aquatic invertebrates. Therefore, we demonstrate that the assimilated nutrients were consistent with the relative consumption of food items. Peru is experiencing a "gastronomic boom" that is increasing the demand for seafood. We investigated two implicit assumptions of two popular sustainable seafood consumer-based initiatives: (1) seafood is labelled correctly, and (2) the recommended species are healthy for consumers. We used DNA barcoding to determine the taxonomic identity of 449 seafood samples from markets and restaurants and analysed the concentration of total mercury (THg) in a sub-sample (271 samples) of these. We found that a third of seafood is mislabelled and that over a quarter of all samples had mercury levels above the upper limit recommended by the US EPA (300 ng/g ww). Additionally, 30% of samples were threatened and protected species. Mislabelling often occurred for economic reasons and the lack of unique common names. Mislabelled samples also had significantly higher mercury concentrations than correctly labelled samples. The "best choice" species compiled from two sustainable seafood guides had less mislabelling, and when identified correctly through DNA barcoding, had on average lower mercury than the other species. Nevertheless, some high mercury species are included in these lists. Mislabelling makes the efforts of seafood campaigns less effective as does the inclusion of threatened species and species high in mercury. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
