By decomposing the total sea surface current into its geostrophic and ageostrophic components, we examined the contribution of each to the long-term variability of the total sea surface current. Our findings demonstrate the importance of geostrophic currents in Baltic Sea gyre formations. Additionally, ageostrophic currents contribute significantly to the flow across the region. Quantifying the difference between total sea surface current fields has revealed two dominant general sea surface circulation patterns in the Baltic Sea, whose characteristics correspond to the monthly mean climatology of sea surface current fields in May and December. Subsequently, a machine learning technique was employed to effectively detect the types of sea surface circulation patterns using wind vectors and sea level anomaly fields. This underscored the combined influence of sea level anomaly-driven and wind-driven components in shaping surface current vectors in the Baltic Sea, consistent with geostrophic and ageostrophic decompositions. A shift of El Niño onset location from eastern Pacific (EP) to western Pacific (WP) occurred around 1970. It was accompanied by a faster mean sea surface temperature (SST) warming in WP and a change of precursory SST and wind anomaly patterns. The eigenvalue analysis of a simple coupled model shows that an SST anomaly (SSTA) in WP may grow under the post-1970 mean condition but cannot under the pre-1970 mean condition. As a result, a warm SSTA appeared in WP accompanying to a preceding La Niña condition in EP after 1970, whereas such a warming was rarely seen before 1970. The preceding SSTA patterns led to distinctive zonal wind responses in EP, favoring El Niño onset in EP prior to 1970. For the post-1970 El Niño onset, an initial warming in WP was induced by anomalous downward solar radiation in association with atmospheric meridional overturning circulation or anomalous horizontal advection associated with thermocline induced eastward geostrophic currents. We have analyzed the relationship between wind variability and sea level anomalies (SLA) on the Southwestern Atlantic Continental Shelf, focusing on sub-annual temporal scales. For this, we tested the capability of gridded altimetry to represent wind-driven SLA and compared results using an oceanographic model and tide gauge data. The present study used coherence analysis to analyze frequencies for which SLA and wind stress are coherent. The altimetry-SLA were found to have less energy below the three-month period compared to the model SLA. The coherence of along-shore wind stress and altimetry SLA was only significant for > 50 days (d), while the model SLA showed significant agreement in all periods considered, 20 d to annual. We further showed that geostrophic velocities on the continental shelf agreed significantly with SLA for > 50 d. As a result of an Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis, we found that the second mode is highly coherent with the along-shore wind stress and accounts for 18.1% and 10.7% of variability in the model and altimetry sea level anomalies, respectively. A new efficient analytical-numerical method is developed for solving a problem for the potential vorticity equation in the quasi-geostrophic approximation with allowance for vertical diffusion of mass and momentum. The method is used to analyze small perturbations of ocean currents of finite transverse scale with a general parabolic vertical profile of velocity. For the arising spectral non-self-adjoint problem, asymptotic expansions of the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues are constructed for small wave numbers and the existence of a countable set of complex eigenvalues with an unboundedly decreasing imaginary part is shown. On the integration interval , a system of three neighborhoods is introduced and a solution in each of them is constructed in the form of power series expansions, which are matched smoothly, so that the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues are efficiently calculated with high accuracy. For a varying wave number , the trajectories of complex eigenvalues are computed for various parameters of the problem and the existence of double eigenvalues is shown. For the period of satellite altimetry observation 1993–2018, a comparison was made of estimates of the linear meridional shifts of the jet structure and variations in current intensity in the sector of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) south of Africa (10° E–25° W), obtained on the basis of the parameters derived from the module of the absolute dynamic topography (ADT) gradient : directly , module of the velocity of geostrophic current |u| on the ocean surface, half of square of the ADT gradient , and specific kinetic energy . The analysis was carried out by a method developed earlier and refined in this paper using linear regression analysis. It is shown that qualitatively the characters of the meridional shifts (displacement of the curves of these parameters averaged over latitude and for each year) in latitude and the corresponding current intensity variations (i.e., variations in the parameters themselves) over 26-year observations, when calculated through each of the four parameters, turned out to be similar. The same similarity was obtained from the calculations with respect to the ADT scale. Meanwhile, the quantitative differences between calculations for different pairs of parameters can be significant even in the and pair. In quantitative terms, the absolute values of shifts of the jet structure and variations in the intensity of currents in the ACC band in the studied sector of the Southern Ocean generally increase from those linearly dependent on the ADT gradient module to quadratically dependent ones. The interannual variability of sea surface temperature (SST) in the South China Sea (SCS) exhibits two warming peaks around January and August in the subsequent year of El Niño. Results show that the second basin-scale SST warming peak is only evident following strong El Niño events, not regular events, which can be well identified by the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) method. The heat budget analysis reveals that the anomalous Ekman heat advection (Eka) and geostrophic heat advection (Goa) contribute to the second warming feature, associated with the local dynamic response in the SCS, such as wind-driven Ekman downwelling, weakened Vietnam coastal upwelling, and abnormal anticyclonic geostrophic currents. The abnormal Eka and Goa are further attributed to the advanced abnormal equatorial easterlies breakout in the western Pacific, coinciding with the development of the western North Pacific anomalous anticyclone (WNPAC) in response to strong El Niño. This suggests that the second warming feature of the SCS SST is the footprint of strong El Niño events via the establishment of the WNPAC, which is tightly related to Indo-Pacific remote processes. We investigated the seasonal variation in the current field in Harima-Nada using a high-resolution three-dimensional numerical model. The model showed sufficiently good performance at recreating its spatial and seasonal variation. Additionally, the model successfully reproduced the observed temperature and salinity patterns and values, as well as the observed surface current fields. The seasonal variation was consistent with previous studies, showing downwind circulation in winter induced by northwesterly winds and cyclonic circulation in summer induced by density-driven circulation. The water was well-mixed during winter and stratified in summer. During summer, a bottom cold water (BCW) dome develops beneath the thermocline in the central basin, where a surface cyclonic eddy occurs. Cold water from the previous winter is trapped at the bottom in topographic depressions after the onset of spring, forming BCW in the Harima-Nada (HNBCW). Meanwhile, pressure gradients associated with the density difference across the BCW drive geostrophic flow and form a cyclonic eddy at the surface above the HNBCW. HNBCW experiences a temperature increase of approximately 12.8 °C from spring to summer, which is associated with vertical diffusion and horizontal advection processes. Air–sea heat flux is the main factor influencing water temperature and its changes in the HNBCW. In addition, topographic features and river discharge factors affected water circulations as well as the formation and variation in the HNBCW. An analysis of water exchange between the Bering (Pacific Ocean) and Chukchi (Arctic Ocean) seas in the summer was carried out using satellite data on sea level, geostrophic currents, and measurement data of water transport in the Bering Strait. It is shown that there is good agreement (r = 0.85, July–October 1997−2019) between the velocities of geostrophic currents (satellite data) and measurements of water transport (buoy station data) through the Bering Strait. It has been established that the temporal variability of water transport through the Bering Strait is determined by sea level variations in the southern part of the Chukchi Sea (66°–68° N, 170°–172° W). Strengthening of the eastern (western) winds is accompanied by a decrease (increase) in the sea level in the southern part of the Chukchi Sea and, as a result, an increase (decrease) in the flow of water through the Bering Strait. An increase (decrease) in the flow of the Yukon River is accompanied by a rise (decrease) in sea level and changes in water circulation in the northern Bering Sea and the southern Chukchi Sea. The spatial distribution and seasonal variability of mesoscale eddies in the Sea of Japan have been investigated based on the regional database created from the AVISO Mesoscale Eddies Trajectory Atlas (1993–2020). The database contains information about the trajectories and parameters of mesoscale eddies in the Sea of Japan. The eddy detection method is based on the analysis of altimetric maps of absolute dynamic topography. A total of 578 eddies with a lifetime of more than 90 days have been identified (273 anticyclonic and 305 cyclonic). The average lifetime of eddies is 202 days for anticyclonic and 143 days for cyclonic and mean radius of 58 km for anticyclonic and 61 km for cyclonic. The mean speed of anticyclones and cyclones along their trajectories is 2.8 and 3.7 cm/s; the mean orbital velocities of geostrophic currents are 19.0 and 15.1 cm/s, respectively. The maximum number of cases of formation and destruction of anticyclones falls in July–September during the period with high values of water inflow through the Korea Strait. Most of the cyclonic eddies are generated between January and June and decay during the cold half of the year (October–March). A joint analysis of maps of the mean surface circulation in the Sea of Japan (satellite altimetry data) and the spatial distribution of mesoscale eddy shows that the stable eddies of the Sea of Japan are associated with the quasi-stationary meanders of the East Korea East Korea Warm Curent, Subpolar Front, and Tsushima current. The characteristics of cold core eddies and their effects on the hydrodynamics and biological production in the Andaman seas were studied using in-situ and satellite observations. The existence and spatial extent of the eddy are revealed by the precise structure and patterns of the temperature-salinity (T–S) profiles, nutrients, and chl a. A good illustration of this is the anomaly in sea surface height (SSHA). The Cyclonic Eddies (CE1 and CE2) are monitored using the Okubo-Weiss parameter (− 2 × 10–11/s2) calculated from the satellite SSHA and a geostrophic current centered at 8°N and 92°E and 13°N and 93°E, respectively. At the eastern flank of CE1, measurements are taken in-situ along 8°N and 92.5°–93.5°E. Vertical currents measured with Acoustic Doppler Current Profiles (ADCP) at 0.3 m/s show northward flow along the track. A significant northward flow (0.3 m/s) can be seen in the vertical currents recorded with ADCP, yet a weak southern flow can be seen over the western margin. In addition, the SSHA acquired from altimetry demonstrates the spatial extent, supporting the occurrence of cyclonic eddies. The vertical shear in the horizontal flow is the main contributor to baroclinic instability (Ri 0.0001) in the water column, according to an analysis of the factors that could result in the formation of an eddy. The T–S profiles show that the area contains Bay of Bengal (BoB) water, and there are semi-annual Rossby waves there as well. However, the wind stress curl did not provide a reliable indication of divergence in the region. The region's biological production (chl a) and nutrient distribution (NO2, NO3, PO4, and SiO4) were impacted by the eddy. CE2 is connected to convective mixing processes that take place along the northwest coast of the Andaman Islands as a result of the primarily cold, dry continental air flowing from the north east. Surface currents in oceanic environment are of vital importance from economical, biological and environmental aspects. Modelling ocean currents has generally been performed using numerical ocean circulation models as a solution to initial-boundary value problems in oceanic domain. Due to lack of knowledge about model parameters as well as initial and boundary values, they need to be externally calibrated for accurate local and regional applications. In this study, an alternative approach is proposed to incorporate spaceborne geodetic observations as well as hydrographic data to estimate the total surface current in the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea. Being the data-driven approach, the method is comparable to numerical ocean models and regionally it is more accurate and simpler in application. The proposed method focuses on the computation of dynamic topography (DT) by least squares variance component estimation combining two different schemes. They are (1) DT estimation via direct observations of sea surface height from satellite altimetry and (2) steric and non-steric modeling of sea level anomaly using temperature and salinity data for the steric component; and Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment observations for the non-steric component. Ultimately, the total surface current is obtained by computing the horizontal gradient of DT using geostrophic equation and adding the components of the Ekman current. Moreover, the estimated total surface current is further improved by assimilating with in situ current meter data using 3D-Variational data assimilation method and it is validated against two control stations. This assimilation leads to improvement of about 3 to 15 cm/s in total surface current computed using geostrophic equation and Ekman current. Besides, to illustrate the significance of the proposed approach, the estimated total surface current is externally validated and compared with the output of Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS), as a numerical ocean model developed for oceanographic applications. Our comparison reveals that the proposed method is more accurate and reliable than CMEMS products. As for the circulation and current pattern, the estimated surface velocities reveal the existence of eddies in the region of the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea, indicating the occurrence of cyclonic and anti-cyclonic circulations. Long-term features of the vertical and horizontal structure of water temperature field in Lake Sevan are discussed. It is shown that the climate warming has led to an increase in epilimnion temperature in Bol'shoi Sevan in July by 2.0‒3.0°C. The increase in water temperature in hypolimnion was not greater than 1.1°C. In autumn (October), the epilimnion became 1.2°C warmer, while hypolimnion temperature practically has not changed on the average over years. Temperature fields were used to calculate the density currents in summer and autumn periods. A dominating cyclonic water circulation was revealed all over the lake, confirmed by chlorophyll distribution by satellite image data. In the case of large horizontal gradients of water density, the flow velocity can reach 50 cm/s. Autonomous buoy stations revealed a wide range of water temperature variations due to internal waves of different nature. The reversible vertical mixing of water mass by internal waves plays an important role in the distribution of nutrients and plankton within the water mass. The water level rise by ~3 m, unlike it drop by 1981 by 18.48, has not caused any significant changes in lake hydrological regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reviews the recent progress in our estimation of ocean dynamic topography and the derived surface geostrophic currents, mainly based on multiple nadir radar altimeter missions. These altimetric observations provide the cornerstone of our ocean circulation observing system from space. The largest signal in sea surface topography is from the mean surface dominated by the marine geoid, and we will discuss recent progress in observing the mean ocean circulation from altimetry, once the geoid and other corrections have been estimated and removed. We then address the recent advances in our observations of the large-scale and mesoscale ocean circulation from space, and the particular challenges and opportunities for new observations in the polar regions. The active research in the ocean barotropic tides and internal tidal circulation is also presented. The paper also addresses how our networks of global multi-satellite and in situ observations are being combined and assimilated to characterize the four-dimensional ocean circulation, for climate research and ocean forecasting systems. For the future of ocean circulation from space, the need for continuity of our current observing system is crucial, and we discuss the exciting enhancement to come with global wide-swath altimetry, the extension into the coastal and high-latitude regions, and proposals for direct total surface current satellites in the 2030 period. This study provides formulae for monthly estimates of the Soya Warm Current (SYC) transport from the sea-level difference (SLD) across the Soya Strait and along the current, and creates a 50-yr data set of the SYC transport. The formulae are based on the dynamical balance both across the strait and along the current by considering the barotropic and baroclinic components. It is suggested that the barotropic and baroclinic components in transport variability are comparable in summer, whereas the barotropic component is dominant in winter. We compared the 50-year time series of the SYC transport with those of the Tsushima (TSC) and Tsugaru Warm Currents estimated from the SLDs from the viewpoint of the Japan Sea Throughflow (JSTF) system. The variabilities of the SYC and TSC transports are mostly shared for any season, showing relatively high coherence at periods of 2–5 years as well as 1 year. The winter variability of the JSTF transport originates partly from that of the SYC transport caused by the winter monsoon variability in the Sea of Okhotsk. The SYC transport is significantly correlated with the transport through the eastern channel of the TSC, but not that through the western channel. We found difficulty in extracting variability and relationships at periods longer than 5 years among the three transports estimated from the SLDs, probably due to incomplete correction of the ground movements for the sea-level data. The Antarctic Circumpolar Current plays a key role in the circulation of the Southern Ocean and affects redistribution of heat by the ocean on a global scale. The study of the dynamics and structure of this current becomes especially relevant in a changing climate. The current is well manifested based on the satellite altimetry data, which makes it possible to study the variability of its structure in time and space on different scales. The methods for determining the position of individual fronts of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current based on satellite altimetry data becomes most important in solving these tasks. In this paper, we compare different approaches to the detection of fronts. To do this, the structure of the northernmost branch of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, the Subantarctic Front, and its spatial and temporal variability have been considered based on the satellite altimetry data from 1993 to 2020 and also on the results of a hydrographic section made onboard the R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh across the northern part of the Drake Passage in February 2020. To assess the dynamics of the front, a section of the TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1,2,3 satellite altimeter track from Tierra del Fuego to the south, 350 km long, was selected. Criteria are presented for determining the position of the northern and main branches of the Subantarctic Front based on the satellite altimetry data. A long-term trend of shifting the position of the fronts with respect to the previously accepted levels of absolute dynamic topography has been found. It has been established that the accuracy of determining the position of fronts from fixed values of dynamic topography can decrease in time, in particular, due to the variations in the mean sea level. A statistically significant long-term trend in sea level rise in the region of the Subantarctic Front at a rate of 4 mm/year for the northern branch and 2.5 mm/year for the main branch was found. This paper investigates the spatial inhomogeneity of the time-averaged, quasigeostrophic, double-gyre circulation response to fixed, realistic, large-scale modes of wind-stress forcing. While the companion paper of this study focused on understanding the anatomy of low-frequency, midlatitude climate variability in an idealised, eddy-resolving coupled model, this paper looked at understanding the nature of the wind-induced ocean gyre response using an ocean-only configuration of the same model. Our analysis revealed two, time-averaged responses to an east–west dipole, wind-stress curl anomaly in the ocean basin. Firstly, wind-stress anomalies in the western ocean basin led to changes in relative strength of the inertial recirculation zones and jet-axis tilt. This is consistent with an advection-dominated, nonlinear adjustment of the ocean gyres to anomalous forcing. Secondly, wind-stress curl anomalies in the eastern ocean basin was found to induce a largely independent response involving meridional shifts of the western boundary current extension (WBCE). The effects of time-averaged advection in this region are weak and the discovery of westward-propagating Rossby waves along the WBCE revealed the response is more akin to a baroclinic Rossby wave adjustment. Meteorological data obtained from June to September 2005 to 2011 were used to analyze the dispersion of the Tecolutla, Cazones, and Tuxpan river plumes over the Lobos–Tuxpan reef system, one of the largest reef areas of the western Gulf of Mexico. The highest rainfall and river discharges in the area are observed during the summer season and September. The results suggest that the river's plumes can reach the Tuxpan reef under coastal winds blowing northward, inducing a coastal current flowing in the same direction. The river's plume gets dispersed around the Lobos–Tuxpan reef area (50 km away) due to the influence of an anticyclonic gyre, thus the plumes are classified as far-field plumes. The Kelvin numbers associated with the rivers are small, which allows the direction of the plumes to go northward, despite Coriolis dynamics. The rivers influence produce eutrophication, > 0.3 mg/m3 of chlorophyll-a, mainly around the Tuxpan reef cluster, but further north over the Lobos reef cluster, oligotrophic conditions prevail with chlorophyll-a concentrations below 0.15 mg/m3. Turbid waters from the rivers' plumes, obtained from the diffuse attenuation coefficient at 490 nm, reached the Tuxpan reef area with 0.1–0.2 m−1. This pattern was different during September when the rivers reached the entire area (Lobos and Tuxpan cluster), showing values ranging from 0.05 to 0.10 m−1. Correlation between the sea surface temperature, chlorophyll-a, and turbidity at the river´s mouths with the reef areas also suggest the river's influence at this location. Ocean bottom pressure-gauge (OBP) records play an essential role in seafloor geodesy. Oceanographic fluctuations in OBP data, however, pose as a significant noise source in seafloor transient crustal deformation observations, including slow slip events (SSEs), making it crucial to evaluate them quantitatively. To extract the significant fluctuation phenomena common to multiple observation networks, including oceanographic fluctuations and tectonic signals, we applied principal component analysis (PCA) to the 3-year Dense Oceanfloor Network System for Earthquakes and Tsunamis (DONET) OBP time series for 40 stations during 2016–2019. PCA could separate several oceanographic signals based on the characteristics of their spatial distributions, although evident transient tectonic signals could not be confirmed from the observed pressure records during this observed period. The spatial distribution of the first four principal components (PCs) reflected the common component, inclined component along sea depth, longitude component, and parabola-like pattern, respectively. By subtracting each PC (in particular, PC-2 and PC-4) from the time series, we could significantly reduce the sea depth dependence of OBP records, which has been highlighted in several previous studies and is also evident in this region. We interpreted PCs 2–4 as the reflection of the strength and meandering of ocean geostrophic currents based on a comparison with the PC spatial distribution of the numerical oceanographic models. In addition, to evaluate the ability of PCA to separate transient tectonic signal from OBP time series, including oceanographic fluctuations, we conducted a synthetic ramp assuming an SSE by rectangular fault and then applied PCA. The assumed synthetic tectonic signal could be separated from the oceanographic signals and included in the principal component independently depending on its amplitude, suggesting that the spatial distribution of each PC would change if the amplitude of the synthetic signal were sufficiently large. We propose a transient event-detection method based on the spatial distribution difference of a specific PC with or without a tectonic signal. We used the normalized inner product (NIP) between these PCs as the indicator of their similarities. It is not fully understood how near-inertial kinetic energy (NIKE) is spatially distributed near Tsushima oceanic front (TOF) as a typhoon travels across the region. Underneath TOF, a year-round mooring covering a major part of water column was implemented in 2019. During summer, three massive typhoons (Krosa, Tapah, and Mitag) consecutively traversed the frontal area and delivered a substantial amount of NIKE into surface mixed layer. According to a mixed-layer slab model, NIKE was widely distributed near the cyclone's track. The mooring observation exhibited the vertical distribution and pathways of surface-generated NIKE in response to the successive typhoon events. According to the modal decomposition, first three modes mostly explain the NIKE's elevations following the typhoon events. According to ray-tracing experiments based on the internal-wave theory, large-scale near-inertial waves (NIWs) rapidly descend to a depth greater than 1000 m, while mesoscale NIWs slowly descend and rarely reached beyond the main pycnocline. Following the passage of Tapah, a profound energy mass was found nearly stationary at shallow depths coincident with vertical shear of geostrophic current. Given the essential impact of mixed-layer temperature (MLT) seasonality in Kuroshio–Oyashio Confluence Region (KOCR) on the variations of climate and marine economic species, the present study investigates causes of seasonal MLT anomaly (MLTA) in KOCR under bimodal states of Kuroshio Extension (KE). The results reveal that KE bimodality plays a modulation role in the seasonal variability of MLTA in KOCR. There is an opposite seasonal variation trend of MLTA under different KE states, and the MLTA amplitude in cold season (winter and spring) is larger than that in warm season (summer and autumn). Such behavior is directly induced by different distribution of climatological MLT and wind field in cold and warm seasons, as well as the opposite anomalous velocity of wind and ocean currents nearby KOCR associated with different KE states through changing sensible and latent heat flux, Ekman and geostrophic advection. An analysis is made of unstable perturbations of a geostrophic current of finite transverse scale with a vertical parabolic velocity profile of a general form (with linear and constant velocity shear) in a vertically bounded layer. The model is based on the potential vortex equation in the quasi-geostrophic approximation taking into account the vertical diffusion of momentum and mass. The equation and boundary conditions are reduced to a spectral eigenvalue problem of the Orr–Sommerfeld type. To search for eigenfunctions and eigenvalues, a high-precision analytic–numerical method was used. Particular attention is paid to the study of unstable perturbations with a phase velocity exceeding the maximum flow velocity. Such instability should be distinguished from baroclinic instability and critical layer instability. It is found that the indicated instability can develop in ocean currents when the problem parameters vary in a wide range of values. It is also obtained that, at an increase in the Prandtl number, the phase velocity of such perturbations increases and can significantly exceed the maximum flow velocity. However, the occurrence of such unstable perturbations is possible only when the maximum flow velocity is located in the inner region of the layer (but not necessarily in its center). It has also been found that narrow currents (the transverse scale is equal to or smaller than the Rossby radius) with a parabolic vertical profile can be unstable. The most unstable perturbations have approximately equal scales along and across the flow; that is, they are circular perturbations. Compared to the dynamics of the predominantly geostrophic along-shelf current, our understanding of the cross-shelf dynamics in the Sea of Okhotsk is inadequate despite their importance in water mixing and nutrient entrainment. We investigated the cross-shelf overturning circulation along the East Sakhalin Current, which is a source of nutrients such as iron for the western North Pacific. Here, we reveal that the cross-shelf circulation during winter is characterised by a nearshore upwelling and a shelf-break downwelling under a downwelling-favourable monsoon wind, contrary to a classical Ekman overturning (EOT). This reverse EOT is driven by the internal water stress, which is caused by intensive vertical mixing and geostrophic vertical shear in the shelf-break front produced by riverine discharges from the far-eastern Eurasian Continent. The EOT blocks the Ekman onshore transport from the open ocean, thereby producing a deep mixed layer at the shelf break. Barotropic and baroclinic tides were simulated for the Coral and Tasman Seas off eastern Australia and compared to a simulation without tides. Both simulations included geostrophic currents and replicated a current analogous to the East Australian Current (EAC). Tides and tidal currents in most of this region are weak, generally 1–2 cm s−1, with the exception of the far northwest portion of the Coral Sea. Even these weak tides were found to impact the mean EAC-like current transport, enhancing it by 1–4 Sv in some areas. Southward flow increased over the continental shelf. Tides did not appear to impact eddy formation, size, or rotational speed; however, they affected eddy propagation. Cyclonic eddies propagated northward faster with tides than without tides. Tides impacted cross-shelf transport of colder water, with significantly more on-shore transport occurring with tides, particularly equatorward of the diurnal critical latitudes. Cross-shelf transport of nutrient rich water onto the shelf is important in this oligotrophic region. Although the prime source of vertical shear and mixing were mean currents and eddies, tides played a secondary role. Tides influenced mixing by increasing vertical temperature diffusivities to 10−4 to 10−3 m2 s−1 over portions of the continental slope and over rough topography, particularly in regions near the diurnal critical latitudes (27°–30°). The trajectories of 114 000 passive particles regularly distributed on a grid in the Sea of Okhotsk are calculated for each day of the interval from January 31, 1997 to March 10, 2021, based on satellite altimetry data on geostrophic current speeds. All particles coming to the Sea of Okhotsk from the Pacific Ocean are identified and the age of the Pacific-origin waters and the area where these waters enter the sea are determined. Using daily vessel-position data in the walleye pollock fishery from 1997 to 2021, Lagrangian maps of the origin and age of the Pacific waters over the same period, and statistical analysis, it is shown that the Walleye pollock fishing grounds are more often in the Pacific waters which passed through the northern Kuril Straits not more than 100 days before the catch dates than in the waters which entered the sea to the south or have been in the sea for more than 100 days. Analysis of satellite imagery of sea surface temperatures leads to the conclusion that the reasons for the aggregation of walleye pollock catch locations in intrusions and Lagrangian fronts of Pacific waters are their warmer temperatures and higher concentrations of feed. The distribution of fresh water in the East Siberian Sea (ESS) and Laptev Sea (LS) in the period of the least ice coverage (August–October) has been analyzed using satellite data on sea level and CTD data from ship observations. It is shown that there is a good agreement between the salinity/density distribution in the surface water layer and the sea level in the study area. An increase (decrease) in the runoff of the Lena River during the summer flood leads to an increase (decrease) in the sea level in the eastern part of the LS and in the western and southwestern parts of the ESS in September and October (r = 0.52–0.59 in 1993–2019). The intensification of the western winds is accompanied by a decrease in salinity and a rise in sea level in the coastal areas of the LS and ESS. Eastern winds cause a decrease in sea level in the southern regions of the LS and ESS and the flow of waters with low salinity from the coastal to the open part of the sea. The Soya Current is formed from the transformed subtropical waters of the Tsushima Current, which flows from the Sea of Japan through the La Perouse Strait, spreads along the northern coast of Hokkaido, and enters the Pacific Ocean through the Yekaterina and Kunashir straits. An analysis of satellite data (1993–2019) on sea level, geostrophic current velocity, surface water temperature, and chlorophyll concentration in the southern part of the Sea of Okhotsk, in the zone of the La Perouse Strait (Sea of Japan), and in the southern Kuril region of the Pacific Ocean has been carried out. It has been established that an increase in the sea level difference between the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean leads to the intensification of the Soya current. The main contribution to the change in the level difference between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan in autumn belongs to anticyclonic eddies and meanders of the Subarctic Front in the Pacific Ocean. An increase (decrease) in the penetration of transformed subtropical waters through the La Perouse Strait is accompanied by an increase (decrease) in the temperature of the surface water layer in the southern part of the Sea of Okhotsk (r = 0.67 in 2000–2019) and a decrease (increase) in the chlorophyll concentration in the Kuril region of the Pacific Ocean (r = –0.70 in 1998–2019) in September–October. An analytical-numerical method is developed for solving a problem for the potential vorticity equation in the quasi-geostrophic approximation with allowance for vertical diffusion of mass and momentum. The method is used to analyze small perturbations of ocean currents of finite transverse scale with a general parabolic vertical profile of velocity. For the arising spectral non-self-adjoint problem, asymptotic expansions of the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues are constructed for small values of the wave number . It is shown that, for small , there exist two bounded eigenvalues and a countable set of unboundedly growing eigenvalues. For a varying wave number , the trajectories of eigenvalues are calculated for various dimensionless parameters of the problem. The spatial distribution, and the monthly and seasonal variability of mesoscale eddy observations derived from the AVISO eddy atlas are assessed in the Caribbean Sea during 1993–2019. The average lifetime for the whole set of eddies is 62 ± 37 days, mean amplitude of 7 ± 4 cm for cyclonic and 7 ± 4 cm for anticyclonic and mean radius of 100 ± 31 km for cyclonic and 108 ± 32 km for anticyclonic. Cyclonic eddies are on average more nonlinear than anticyclonic ones. The spatio-temporal variability in the number of eddy observations is evaluated against the Mean Eddy Kinetic Energy (MEKE) derived from geostrophic currents as well as from seasonal winds. Spatial distribution of eddy observations is correlated with MEKE while the migration of the intertropical convergence zone explains the advection of eddies towards the southern part of the basin. Temporal variations of net Kuroshio transport are examined for 1972–2018 based on a repeated hydrographic section along 137°E, which is maintained by the Japan Meteorological Agency. The net Kuroshio transport obtained by integration of geostrophic current velocity relative to 1000 dbar depth fluctuates on inter-annual and decadal timescales. The predominant timescale of the net Kuroshio transport changes with time; the inter-annual variation is pronounced in 1972–1990 and 2000–2018, and the decadal variation is detected only before 2000. We find that a winter wind stress curl variation in the central North Pacific which reflects meridional movements of the Aleutian Low and intensity fluctuations of the North Pacific subtropical high on an inter-annual timescale and intensity fluctuations of the Aleutian Low on a decadal timescale, causes the net Kuroshio transport variation. In addition to the inter-annual and decadal variations, we further pointed out a bi-decadal-scale variation of the net Kuroshio transport and its possible link to the Aleutian Low intensity fluctuation. Moreover, our results indicate that during large net Kuroshio transport, sea surface temperature around the Kuroshio and Kuroshio Extension region tends to increase, resulting in vigorous upward sensible and latent heat release. The fluctuation of the subsurface ocean heat condition along the equatorial Pacific is associated with the mass/heat exchanges between the equatorial and off-equatorial regions, which is the main cause of the phase transitions during the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle. In this work, the connection between the meridional transport convergences (MTCs) along the equatorial Pacific and variations of the warm water volume in the equatorial Pacific and their connections with the ENSO cycle are investigated. It is noted that the Sverdrup MTC induced by the wind stress curl has a significant impact on the thermocline fluctuation in nearly the entire equatorial Pacific but the impacts of its components vary with longitude. The component induced by the Ekman currents has a significant contribution from 150° W eastward to the coast, as well as the far-western Pacific, while the geostrophic component has a significant contribution in the central Pacific. There is a strong compensation between the surface wind stress-induced Ekman MTC and the Ekman pumping-induced geostrophic MTC which is confined in the central Pacific. Furthermore, the geostrophic component facilitates the phase transition of the ENSO cycle, while the Ekman component compensatively hinders it. The longitudinally varying component of the MTC enhances the anomalous thermocline tilting during the ENSO growth and maturing phases. Ocean spiciness is referred to as density-compensated temperature and salinity variations with warm (cool) and salty (fresh) waters having high (low) spiciness, respectively. The structure and evolution of density-compensated (warm/salty or cool/fresh) spiciness anomalies are investigated in the North Pacific thermocline using Argo observations during the period 2004–20. Two well-organized decadal spiciness events are identified through isopycnal surface analyses. One warm/salty spiciness anomaly of about 0.15°C and 0.05 g kg−1 temperature and salinity perturbations on the 25 kg m−3 isopycnal surface appeared in the eastern subtropical North Pacific at (18°–30°N, 120°–150°W) in 2007, which then migrated southwestward along the mean circulation and arrived in the western tropics at (∼15°N, 145°E–175°W) in 2012–13, with the reduced salinity perturbation of about 0.043 g kg−1. Another cool/fresh spiciness anomaly of about −0.2°C and −0.07 g kg−1 temperature and salinity perturbations originated from the eastern subtropics at (120°–150°W, ∼30°N) in 2014 and followed a similar advective pathway during the period from 2014–15 to 2019–20. The subduction pathway can be adequately determined by the mean Montgomery stream function on the isopycnal surface; the propagation direction and speed are in good agreement with the expectation for the role played by advection due to the mean geostrophic current. Moreover, the subducted decadal spiciness anomalies can have negative feedback on sea surface temperature (SST) variability in the western tropical Pacific through the diapycnal processes. The identifications of these density-compensated spiciness anomalies and their propagation pathways provide a clear illustration of the oceanic extratropics-tropics interactions in the North Pacific Ocean. When compared to tide-dominated shelves, shelves swept by geostrophic flows are relatively understudied, yet geostrophic currents have the potential to construct substantial current-generated shelf bedforms. This paper examines the evolution of a series of bedforms encountered along the narrow Agulhas Current-swept northern KwaZulu-Natal shelf. Their evolution is placed in the context of progressive current impingement and variation in flows associated with the postglacial transgression and culminating in the present-day highstand. Ultra-high resolution seismic reflection, multibeam, side-scan sonar and single beam data sets reveal several bedform scales and morphologies; wave ripples and shoreface-connected ridges are associated only with the inner shelf, and 2D and 3D very large dunes are more cosmopolitan and span the entire shelf sector. The inner shelf is marked by rock outcrop (aeolianite), surrounded by sandy sediment, grading seaward into sediment starved bedforms associated with bioclastic gravels. Where sufficient sediment exists in local depocenters, very large dunes form discontinuous fields along the outer shelf. The seismic stratigraphy of the outer shelf reflects the effects of postglacial flooding by rising sea levels and increasing current impingement by the Agulhas Current. The Holocene wave ravinement surface is overlain by flat-lying strata (early dune development and dune amalgamation with first current exposure), in turn covered by hummocky, sub-horizontal aggrading beds (amalgamation), overlain by inclined cross-bedded packages (lee faces of the bedforms formed during migration and full current interaction). Morphometric analyses show that for both the inner and outer shelf, no relationships exist between water depth, wavelength and spacing. Height to spacing (H/L) relationships are weak but nevertheless show a broadly positive trend. Bedform heights are lower on the inner shelf compared to the outer shelf, but bedform spacing is greater on the inner shelf, with a 40% overlap in H/L indices observed between the two areas. The departures in overlap can be linked to the competing offshore Agulhas Current and the inshore wave-dominated processes. Bedforms of the inner shelf plot below the global H/L mean and can be related to the more infrequent incursions of the Agulhas Current core. At the time of survey, the Agulhas Current was likely situated well offshore, resulting in reduced current activity in the survey area resulting in rounding of the dune crests, degradation of the dune crests and trough infilling. On the outer shelf, the H/L values plot above the mean global trend, suggesting vertical accretion due to the faster currents. Crest rounding and downlapping of the upstream lee faces onto the downstream stoss faces indicate dune degradation, which is related to a seaward location of the Agulhas Current at the time of survey. The dynamics of mesoscale eddies in the Bering Sea is studied by the method for automated eddy identification on the basis of altimetry-derived sea-level anomaly fields (SLA method, AVISO+). For this purpose, a regional database has been created for the Bering Sea (1993–2018) on the basis of the "Mesoscale Eddy Trajectory Atlas Product" global dataset to estimate the polarity (cyclonic/anticyclonic), distribution, radius, intensity, nonlinearity, velocity, and motion trajectories of eddies and determine regions of their formation and decay. The results confirm that mesoscale eddies play a significant role in the Bering Sea. About 592 eddies with a minimum lifetime of 90 days were identified (361 anticyclonic and 231 cyclonic). Anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies had average radii of 53.2 and 63.5 km in the Bering Sea. The average orbital velocities of geostrophic currents in the outer closed loops of the eddies were 14.0 and 10.8 cm/s, respectively. The mean speed of anticyclones and cyclones along their trajectories was 5.1 and 6.2 cm/s. Most of the mesoscale eddies were associated with currents of the Bering Sea. This shows that eddies are mainly generated due to baroclinic/barotropic instability of the Bering Sea slope and Kamchatka currents. The eddy generation in the North Aleutian slope current should be influenced by water exchange through the straits of the Aleutian ridge. The number of "new" anticyclonic eddies is maximum in April–July. Most of the cyclonic eddies are generated in the cold half of the year (January–March). An analysis of satellite data and Argo float data has shown the variability in the sea surface temperature (SST), sea level, and geostrophic currents in the northwestern Pacific Ocean and southwestern Bering Sea caused by the nodal tide with a period of 18.6 years. It is found that an increase in the nodal tide amplitude leads to a sea-level decrease and the formation of cyclonic water circulation in the Blizhniy Strait area. In the Bering Sea, there is no water flow directed northward from the Blizhniy Strait to the mainland coast. In the northwestern part of the Pacific Ocean, the westward flow of waters of the Alaskan Stream weakens and a cyclonic eddy is formed. The sea-level decrease is caused by an increase in salinity/density of water in the 50–400 m layer due to increased tidal mixing in the Aleutian Straits and the Blizhniy Strait. The paper presents an analysis of stable and unstable perturbations of ocean currents of a finite transverse scale with a parabolic vertical profiles of velocity (Poiseuille–Couette-type flow), based on the potential vorticity equation in the quasi-geostrophic approximation and taking into account both linear and constant flow velocity shear. The model takes into account the effect of vertical diffusion of buoyancy and vertical friction and assumes that the maximum mean current velocity takes place at the boundary of the layer. The analysis is based on the small perturbation method. The problem depends on several physical parameters and reduces to solving a spectral non-self-adjoint problem for a fourth-order equation with a small parameter at the highest derivative. Asymptotic expansions of the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues are constructed for small values of the wavenumber k. Using the method of continuation in the parameter k, the trajectories of the eigenvalues are calculated for different values of the problem's physical parameters. A detailed analysis of how the features of the vertical flow structure influence the characteristics of stable and unstable perturbations is presented. During cruise 81 of the R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh comprehensive studies of the Kara Sea were carried out over sill separating the central spur of the St. Anna Trough and the Novaya Zemlya depression. For the first time, the water exchange parameters between the shelf southwestern and deep northern parts of the Kara Sea have been evaluated. The meridional component of the geostrophic current velocity calculated from CTD data was used to identify both the northern and southern jets reaching the bottom. Two southern streams are responsible for water transfer from the deep-water part of the Kara Sea to the shelf zone. Traditionally, the estimated volume transport of the North Equatorial Current/Undercurrent (NEC/NEUC) is based on geostrophic equations and/or model results; however, direct observational evidence has not been acquired. We focused on one-year mooring observation data collected along 130°E and calculated the NEC/NEUC volume transport and explore its variability. Results show that the mean NEC and NEUC volume transports calculated from the mean velocity structures in the upper 950 m are 39 Sv and 6 Sv, respectively. Analysis of daily mooring data indicated that the volume transport of the NEC is approximately 52 (±14) Sv and the volume transport of the NEUC is approximately 18 (±13) Sv. A significant 40-day variation existed for the volume transport of both the NEC and NEUC. Overall, the intraseasonal variability (ISV) of the NEC is vertically coherent with that of the NEUC. Observations indicated that the NEUC has three cores centered at approximately 8.5°N (∼500 m), 12.5°N (∼700 m), and 17.5°N (∼900 m), of which the middle core (12.5°N) is the strongest. The 40-day variability of the NEC and NEUC is related to the variability of local wind stress curl anomalies among various Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) phases. Coastal regions are vulnerable areas with often high population density, as well as tourism and maritime activities that may have negative impact on the environment. From a physical point of view, coastal areas may be characterized by high gradient topography and irregular coastline shapes resulting in complex dynamic systems. The monitoring of coastal circulation becomes necessary to support coastal management and to understand the high variability of the dynamics. The simultaneous use of comprehensive observational systems and numerical models may compensate the drawback of each method used separately. The Toulon coastal area is under investigation in this paper by means of HF RADAR and ADCP observations coupled with nested models. The integration of the different data sets allows the monitoring of the coastal ocean continuum from regional oceans and shelf areas. Summer and winter 2018 data are analyzed to depict the seasonal variability of the regional circulation mainly characterized by the geostrophic Northern boundary Current, the wind-driven bay circulation and the connectivity between the bay, the surrounding Marine Protected Area and the open sea. This study is based on a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model of the global climate including a atmospheric general circulation model, a model of the ocean in the geostrophic approximation with a frictional term in the equations of horizontal momentum with the actual configuration of depths and continents, and a model of the evolution of sea ice. Computations of forecasting the climate until 2100 with the use of scenarios of a growth in CO2 are presented. Multidecadal variability of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) plays a vital role in Earth's climate variability. Climate change has the potential to alter the causes and characteristics of AMOC multidecadal variability. Here we use a coupled climate model to simulate AMOC multidecadal variability under three distinct atmospheric CO2 concentrations: Last Glacial Maximum, preindustrial, and 4 × preindustrial levels. Firstly, we discover that AMOC multidecadal variability exhibits a shortened period and a reduced amplitude with increasing atmospheric CO2. We find that these changes in AMOC variability are largely related to enhanced ocean stratification in the subpolar North Atlantic with increasing CO2 which in turn changes the characteristics of westward propagating oceanic baroclinic Rossby waves. Our analysis indicates that the shortened period is primarily due to the increased speed of free oceanic Rossby waves, and the reduced amplitude is mainly due to the reduced magnitude of atmospherically-forced oceanic Rossby waves. Mean flow effects, in the form of eastward mean zonal advection and westward geostrophic self-advection, need to be considered as they largely increase the speed of Rossby waves and hence allow for a better estimate of the changes in the period and amplitude of AMOC variability. Secondly, to explore the possible linkage between atmospheric variability and AMOC fluctuations under each CO2 concentration in a qualitative manner, we analyze the relationship between the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the AMOC and find a significant negative correlation between the two only under the preindustrial levels where the NAO leads the AMOC by 3–11 years. As large-scale ocean circulation is a key regulator in the redistribution of oceanic energy, evaluating the multi-decadal trends in the western Pacific Ocean circulation under global warming is essential for not only understanding the basic physical processes but also predicting future climate change in the western Pacific. Employing the hydrological observations of World Ocean Atlas 2018 (WOA18) from 1955 to 2017, this study calculated the geostrophic currents, volume transport and multi-decadal trends for the North Equatorial Current (NEC), the North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC), the Mindanao Current (MC), the Kuroshio Current (KC) in the origin and the New Guinea Coastal Undercurrent (NGCUC) within tropical western Pacific Ocean over multi-decades. Furthermore, this study examined the contributions of temperature and salinity variations. The results showed significant strengthening trends in NEC, MC and NGCUC over the past six decades, which is mainly contributed by temperature variations and consistent with the tendency in the dynamic height pattern. Zonal wind stress averaged over the western Pacific Ocean in the same latitude of each current represents the decadal variation and multi-decadal trends in corresponding ocean currents, indicating that the trade wind forcing plays an important role in the decadal trend in the tropical western Pacific circulation. Uncertainties in the observed hydrological data and trends in the currents over the tropical western Pacific are also discussed. Given that the WOA18 dataset covers most of the historical hydrological sampling data for the tropical western Pacific, this paper provides important observational information on the multi-decadal trend of the large-scale ocean circulation in the western Pacific. This study examined characteristics of near-inertial internal waves (NIWs) associated with the background mesoscale field near the Tsushima Warm Current. Observational stations off Sado Island were visited recurrently to assess spatiotemporal changes of fine-scale and microscale properties of seawater. Also, NIWs were inspected in terms of relative vorticity and total strain in surface geostrophic motion. During summer expeditions in 2019, current and hydrographic surveys at the rim of an anticyclonic eddy provided clear evidence of downward-travelling NIWs, which were most amplified near the depth of lower pycnocline. The amplification of NIW coincided with elevation in the dissipation rates of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and microscale variation of temperature. The fall 2019 expedition found details of wave and turbulence properties associated with the mesoscale structure of paired vortices, where a cyclone and anticyclone were, respectively, adjacent to the east and west. Amplified signals of NIW-related vertical shear and TKE dissipation were found at isopycnals between the dipole cores. From the theoretical perspective of internal wave, the baroclinic term attributable to vertical shear of geostrophic current was interpreted as inducing downward travel of NIW through the lower pycnoclines between the dipole cores. It is also noted that cyclones, passing through the central part of Sea of Japan, can deliver kinetic energy into 10-km scale internal waves as a consequence of interaction between easterly wind and mountainous topography in the Honshu Island. In a recent study (Želi et al. in Bound Layer Meteorol 176:229–249, 2020), we have shown that the explicit algebraic Reynolds-stress (EARS) model, implemented in a single-column context, is able to capture the main features of a stable atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) for a range of stratification levels. We here extend the previous study and show that the same formulation and calibration of the EARS model also can be applied to a dry convective ABL. Five different simulations with moderate convective intensities are studied by prescribing surface heat flux and geostrophic forcing. The results of the EARS model are compared to large-eddy simulations of Salesky and Anderson (J Fluid Mech 856:135–168, 2018). It is shown that the EARS model performs well and is able to capture the counter-gradient heat flux in the upper part of the ABL due to the presence of the non-gradient term in the relation for vertical turbulent heat flux. The model predicts the full Reynolds-stress tensor and heat-flux vector and allows us to compare other important aspects of a convective ABL such as the profiles of vertical momentum variance. Together with the previous studies, we show that the EARS model is able to predict the essential features of the ABL. AVISO satellite data on the speeds of geostrophic currents from 2004 to 2018 are used to associate a substantial reduction in the saury catch in recent years with a change in the oceanographic situation in the Russian fishing grounds off the coast of the southern and middle Kuril Islands and Hokkaido Island. Lagrangian maps of the origin of water masses, calculated for this period of time on the basis of the AVISO field, and with overlaid positions of fishing vessels of Russia, Japan and Korea, show that this catastrophic reduction is due to a change in the pathways of the nutrient-rich subarctic waters of the Oyashio current in recent years. The greatest changes in the hydrological regime since 2015 were caused by intensification of the third branch of the Oyashio, which transports the waters of this current to the open ocean. At the same time, traditional fishing grounds off the eastern coasts of Hokkaido and southern Kurils have been reduced, while good fishing grounds have appeared in the open ocean. A study of water circulation in the northwestern part of the Bering Sea using AVISO satellite data on velocities of geostrophic currents from 2002 to 2017 showed a significantly variable dynamics of the surface waters. In January, the main current of the surface waters is directed toward the southwest along the continental slope in contrast to anticyclone water circulation in shelf. In July, the surface water current is oriented to the northeast along the continental slope, whereas cyclonic water circulation is dominant at shelf. The formation of winter mesoscale anticyclones is caused by a gain of low-temperature and low-saline shelf waters. The temporal variability of direction and velocity of summer currents is related to coastal upwelling, which is caused by the southern winds over the western part of the Bering Sea. The presence of upwelling and eddies should be considered one of the factors leading to the formation of an area with high chlorophyll concentration close to the coast during summer. A spectral problem of the Orr–Sommerfeld type is considered to describe unstable disturbances of oceanic geostrophic currents with a linear vertical velocity profile by taking into account the vertical diffusion of buoyancy and friction. Numerical solutions are obtained for different values of the dimensionless parameters of the problem. Calculations of the spectra of eigenvalues and growth rates are compared with those of a similar problem for an ideal fluid. It is shown that (a) dissipation expands the range of wave numbers of unstable disturbances, (b) dissipation can increase the growth rates of baroclinic disturbances, (c) disturbances driven by the instability of the critical layer can grow faster than baroclinic disturbances, and (d) currents with a width equal to or less than the Rossby radius can be unstable; nearly circular (axisymmetric) unstable disturbances (submesoscale eddies) can develop in narrow currents or frontal zones. Eleven climate system models that participate in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5) were evaluated based on an assessment of their simulated meridional transports in comparison with the Sverdrup transports. The analyses show that the simulated North Pacific Ocean circulation is essentially in Sverdrup balance in most of the 11 models while the Argo geostrophic meridional transports indicate significant non-Sverdrup gyre circulation in the tropical North Pacific Ocean. The climate models overestimated the observed tropical and subtropical volume transports significantly. The non-Sverdrup gyre circulation leads to non-Sverdrup heat and salt transports, the absence of which in the CMIP5 simulations suggests deficiencies of the CMIP5 model dynamics in simulating the realistic meridional volume, heat, and salt transports of the ocean. The North Equatorial Subsurface Current (NESC) has recently been found to flow westward below the North Equatorial Countercurrent in the subsurface layer across the Pacific Ocean. The structure, water mass properties, and the dynamics of the NESC are studied using Argo profiles and geostrophic currents, combined with moored current meter observations. The mean westward geostrophic currents of the NESC has been validated with moored current meter measurements at 4.7° N, 142° E in the far western tropical Pacific Ocean. Sizable seasonal-to-interannual variability of the NESC is indicated by the observations, with strong transports in boreal summer and during La Niña events, whereas weak transports in boreal winter and during El Niño events. The water masses of the NESC appear to be the mixture of the North and South Pacific intermediate waters, with the waters immediately below the thermocline closer to the North than to the South Pacific waters. A simulation using a linear continuously stratified model of ocean circulation suggests that the mean NESC is forced by wind curl through low baroclinic mode responses of the ocean. Unprecedented coastal upwelling off the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula was reported during the summer of 2013. The upwelling continued for more than a month after a plunge in upwelling-favourable winds and had serious impacts on fisheries. This is a rare phenomenon, as most coastal upwelling events relax a few days after the wind weakens. In this study, observational data and numerical modelling results were analysed to investigate the cause of the upwelling and the reason behind it being sustained for such an extended period. Coastal upwelling was induced by an upwelling-favourable wind in July, resulting in the dynamic uplift of deep, cold water. The dynamic uplift decreased the steric sea level in the coastal region. The sea level difference between the coastal and offshore regions produced an intensified cross-shore pressure gradient that enhanced the surface geostrophic current along the coast. The strong surface current maintained the dynamic uplift due to geostrophic equilibrium. This positive feedback between the dynamic uplift and geostrophic adjustment sustained the coastal upwelling for a month following a plunge in the upwelling-favourable wind. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
