In recent years, companies have been under increasing pressure from consumers, grassroots and community organizations, governments, and shareholders to develop and practice sustainable business practices. Academic and corporate interest in sustainable supply chain management has risen considerably in recent years. This can be seen in the number of papers published. This paper aims to systematically investigate the discipline of supply chain management (SCM) within the context of sustainability. The two concepts are increasingly aligned, and sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) represents an evolving field where they explicitly interact. The study proposes a conceptual framework to classify various factors along the triple bottom-line pillars of sustainability issues in the context of supply chains. The findings indicate that the existing literature is primarily focused on individual sustainability and supply chain dimensions rather than taking a more integrated approach. Also, the economic benefits of developing a sustainable supply chain for an organization are discussed in addition to specific features of sustainable supply chains and limitations of existing research; this should stimulate further research. Objective: Individuals who serve as peer mentors within Canadian spinal cord injury (SCI) community service organizations are reporting compassion fatigue from their roles. One psychological resource that has the potential to reduce compassion fatigue and promote overall mental health among peer mentors is self-compassion. However, there is limited knowledge of any self-compassion programs that have been tailored to address the needs of these individuals. To address this limitation, this paper outlines a protocol to examine the feasibility, acceptability, implementation, and effectiveness of a tailored self-compassion program to reduce compassion fatigue and enhance compassion satisfaction, self-compassion, and mental health among peer mentors within Canadian SCI community service organizations. Design: The 6-week online program will be tested among 20 individuals (five separate groups of four) who serve as peer mentors within two Canadian SCI community service organizations. Method: Feasibility and implementation data will be collected throughout the duration of the program and post program while acceptability data will be collected post program. To evaluate the effectiveness of the program, we will follow a single-group quasi-experimental design with surveys (pre/post/follow-up) and semi-structured interviews (post/follow-up). Results: Results from this study are intended to inform the design of a self-compassion program for peer mentors within Canadian SCI community service organizations who experience compassion fatigue and reduced mental health. Conclusion: Providing evidence for the effectiveness of this program could prove useful for Canadian SCI community service organizations who wish to better support and retain their peer mentors and thus improve the quality of support they provide to mentees. Social work and religion are closely linked by historical ties and roots. In virtually the entire known world, social support for the needy was inspired by religious and spiritual ideas and dogmas. This did not pass for the Russian state in different periods of its political structure, which has its own national specifics. The paper provides rationale for the continuity of community service as a manifestation of advanced Russian political and philosophical ideas of 19th − 20th centuries. The reorganization of the global production network and the increased mobility of urban-rural elements have accelerated the differentiation of rural spaces, resulting in a trend towards specialization in rural areas. This paper focuses on the concept of specialization, and takes a renowned bonsai specialized village in Guangzhou City, China as a typical case to explore its transformation and development process, action logic and coupling mechanism with the social governance. The results show that: 1) the development of rural specialization in Ruiling Village is shaped by several key actors, such as local governments, grassroots organizations, villagers, social organizations, policies, markets and infrastructure. The transfer of these key actors and the reconstruction of actor-networks in different stages have an important influence on the transformation and realization of rural development goals. 2) Through subjects-driven, organization management and resource connection, social governance supports the specialization of rural industrial organization, operation, technology and mode. The governance structure shifts from decentralization to networking, refinement and integration. A coupling community of social governance and specialization is created by the social governance system of 'local government-grassroots organizations-economic cooperatives-villagers', which links industries, industrial chains and cooperatives. 3) Social governance integrates into the value chain extension process of rural specialized development with a central, multi-level organizational structure. It promotes the construction of the whole value chain through organizational planning, resource integration and image shaping, thus realizing the value, branding and organization of the industry, as well as the integration of rural sustainable development and governance mechanism. Social governance has a profound impact on the development of rural specialization in terms of subject, structure and mode, and participates in the construction of the whole value chain of rural areas. This paper provides a new perspective for understanding the coupling effect of social governance in the rural development transformation, and promotes the rural sustainable development and governance. This paper focuses on the role of local community organizations in disaster management following the Beirut explosion of August 4, 2020. It answers the following question: How can interorganizational relationships be effective in their response to disaster in a developing context? The main argument is that a lack of communication and collaboration made non-profit organizations' interventions unsuccessful, and governmental support is necessary for successful interorganizational coordination. This paper develops a framework for disaster response that can be adapted in developing countries. Migrant community-based organizations (MCBOs) are key mediating structures between immigrants and host societies. However, when implementing this role in host societies, MCBOs often face a number of challenges that reduce their chances to be effective in promoting social justice. This paper aims to analyze the challenges that MCBOs settled in Milan (Northern Italy) experience and the coping strategies that they use in order to provide some guidelines on how to support them. In-depth interviews, observations and document analysis with 15 MCBOs were conducted. Based on a situational analysis, we present the main challenges perceived by MCBOs at three levels: internal (i.e., surviving), inter-organizational (i.e., collaborating) and community (i.e., being recognized as mediating actors). Although the government highly focuses on old residential building energy-saving renovation (ORBESR), many hinders still exist and the efficiency of it is still low. This paper proposes a four-party evolutionary game model to study the impact of relative stakeholders' choices, involving developers, residents, neighborhood councils, and governments. Using this model, this paper studies what influences the conflicts between developers and residents take on the efficiency of ORBESR. In addition, what influence the residents, neighborhood councils, and developers' strategies will take on the ORBESR under the condition of evolutionary stability strategy. This paper finally concludes that governments could propose high penalties first to accelerate the stability of the system, then suitable subsidies to relieve the financial burden and to achieve high efficiency. The governments could provide a suitable plan for residents' investment to promote residents' participation. The neighborhood councils arouse the ways and facilities to help residents understand and participate in the ORBESR and try to solve the conflicts between developers and residents can improve the residents' participation and the developers' willingness to implement the ORBESR. Purpose: To improve population health, community members need capacity (i.e., knowledge, skills, and tools) to select and implement evidence-based interventions (EBIs) to fit the needs of their local settings. Since 2002, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has funded the national Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network (CPCRN) to accelerate the implementation of cancer prevention and control EBIs in communities. The CPCRN has developed multiple strategies to build community members' capacity to implement EBIs. This paper describes the history of CPCRN's experience developing and lessons learned through the use of five capacity-building strategies: (1) mini-grant programs, (2) training, (3) online tools, (4) evidence academies, and (5) evaluation support for partners' capacity-building initiatives. Methods: We conducted a narrative review of peer-reviewed publications and grey literature reports on CPCRN capacity-building activities. Guided by the Interactive Systems Framework, we developed histories, case studies, and lessons learned for each strategy. Lessons were organized into themes. Results: Three themes emerged: the importance of (1) community-engagement prior to and during implementation of capacity-building strategies, (2) establishing and sustaining partnerships, and (3) co-learning at the levels of centers, networks, and beyond. Conclusion: CPCRN activities have increased the ability of community organizations to compete for external funds to support implementation, increased the use of evidence in real-world settings, and promoted the broad-scale implementation of cancer control interventions across more than eight states. Lessons from this narrative review highlight the value of long-term thematic networks and provide useful guidance to other research networks and future capacity-building efforts. Purpose: Community engagement is essential in effective public health programs. This paper illustrates the methods used to engage community in the development of a multi-level implementation intervention to address cancer disparities related to hereditary cancer syndromes. Methods: Implementation Mapping (IM), was used to guide the co-creation of an intervention. Key partners were recruited to a 13-member statewide community advisory board (CAB) representing healthcare and community-based organizations. As part of a needs assessment, a 3-round modified Delphi method with the CAB was used to identify implementation outcomes to use in later steps of IM. An anonymous online survey of a validated community engagement measure assessed CAB members' satisfaction with the process. Results: Using a modified Delphi method as part of the needs assessment of IM, the CAB identified three broad categories of strategies: Changing infrastructure using patient navigation; training and educating patients, navigators and providers; and supporting clinicians in case identification and management. Self-reported satisfaction with the IM and Delphi process was high. Conclusions: Implementation Mapping facilitated the use of available evidence, new data, and community engagement to identify strategies to improve the delivery of programs to reduce hereditary cancer disparities. In this paper we present the GDL Vulnerability Index (GVI), a new composite index to monitor and analyse the human components of vulnerability to climate change, natural disasters, and other kinds of shocks, for societies and geographic areas across the globe. The GVI is a simple and flexible index designed for use by experts as well as non-experts in the climate field, including researchers, (local) politicians, NGO's, journalists, advocacy groups and grassroot movements. The GVI is based on an additive formula that summarizes the essence of seven socioeconomic dimensions of vulnerability into a single number. This formula approach sets this index apart from other existing indices. Any person who knows the values of the underlying indicators can compute the vulnerability score of an area by filling in these values in the GVI formula. Validity tests show that the data-driven GVI measures the vulnerability dimensions coping capacity, adaptive capacity and susceptibility as well as major expert-based indices. This offers great prospects for use in situations where no other vulnerability information is available. While facing cuts, downsizing and revenue losses, media organizations experience paradoxical demands in being organized for print or linear production with daily deadlines and simultaneously striving to be 'digital first' and produce and publish stories online on a continuous basis throughout the day. In this paper, we describe efforts applied when introducing the metaphor flowline in a medium-sized newspaper organization in Norway with the aim of aligning their production and publishing processes to readers' consumption of online news. Both the production volume of journalistic content, reader consumption and the newsroom workers' experience of mastering their everyday work life increased dramatically in a very short time. The involvement of a temporary autonomous team in the planning and designing of a test pilot aiming to make flowline "as practice", was integral to the digital transformation success, allowing for participative action across newsroom boundaries. Based on the empirical findings from the local newspaper organization and drawing on theories on liminality (Turner 1982, 1986) and metaphorical work (Schön 1993), this article presents a set of six interrelated steps incorporating a structure for autonomous teams and their role in enabling lasting change in organizations facing digital transformation. As software engineering (SE) practitioners, we can help society by using our communities of experts to address a software need of a socially conscious organization. Doing so can benefit society in the locale of a SE conference and provide access to international experts for local organizations. Furthermore, established SE researchers as well as practitioners and students have the opportunity for a unique learning experience. While the SE community has already realized the importance of addressing human values and promoting social good objectives in software development, we are unaware of previous attempts to leverage SE conferences for this activity. Conferences present an opportunity to enjoy the assembly of SE practitioners, researchers, and students for the purpose of a philanthropic endeavor. Over the past four years of running a "Requirements Engineering for Social Good" event called RE Cares, co-located with the International Conference on Requirements Engineering, we worked with the stakeholders local to the conference venue. We selected stakeholders who would not necessarily have ready access to requirements engineering, software design, and development expertise otherwise, to build software targeting "good causes." In the last two years, this event was altered to adapt to the constraints induced by COVID-19, moving to a hybrid mode and changing many of its practices accordingly. This paper summarizes and generalizes our experiences, discussing our lessons learned in the context of the pandemic and beyond and providing a framework for conducting similar social contribution in any SE conferences in general. In the pre-big data era, many traditional databases supported spatial queries via spatial indexes. However, modern applications are seeing a rapid increase of the volume and ingestion rate of spatial data. Log-structured Merge (LSM) tree is used by many big data systems as their storage structure in order to support write-intensive large-volume workloads, which are usually only optimized for single-dimensional data. Research has studied how spatial indexes can be supported on LSM systems, but focused mainly on the local index organization, that is, how data is organized inside a single LSM component. This paper studies various aspects of LSM spatial indexing, including spatial merge policies, which determine when and how spatial components are merged. Three stack-based and one leveled merge policies have been studied, which have been implemented on a common big data system Apache AsterixDB. The write and read performance on various workloads is evaluated, and our findings and recommendations are discussed. This study examines how non-profit organizations that engage in advocacy gain their legitimacy in the eyes of their target group of vulnerable citizens. The existing body of literature shows that these organizations are challenged in their pursuit of citizen legitimacy, defined as the extent to which their constituent target group perceives the organization as justified, accepted, and appropriate. This paper draws on the results of qualitative research in government-funded non-profit community work organizations that develop advocacy activities to influence policymakers. We interviewed community workers and their target group of citizens in four community centers in Flanders, the northern region of Belgium. We show that community workers engage in practices to enhance both the input and throughput legitimacy of their advocacy activities. More specifically, they construct safe spaces through informality, ensure proximity by taking care of individual needs, and collectivize individual needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines how local firms' structure of human capital and R&D strategies influence their absorption of FDI knowledge spillovers. Using a unique dataset of Chinese firms in Beijing Zhongguancun Science Park from 2009 to 2015, our panel endogenous threshold models confirm two thresholds for human capital diversity and one threshold for R&D diversity in facilitating FDI spillovers. When human capital diversity is below its second threshold, FDI presence positively influences local firms' innovation performance; while above the second threshold, the FDI turns to an insignificant impact. Besides, when R&D diversity is below its single threshold, FDI spillovers are positively associated with local firms' innovation; otherwise, the effect of FDI is insignificantly negative. Our findings highlight the importance of human capital and R&D structures in local firms' absorptive capacity. Local organizations need to keep diversifying their human capital and R&D strategies to learn from FDI knowledge but avoid allocating their efforts evenly upon sub-categories within the two resources. Community-based learning is a pedagogical technique designed to bring students out of the classroom and into their communities. Students typically pair with local nonprofit organizations to complete work which ties into their scholarship. Faculty, students, and community members can all benefit from these partnerships, and university-community relations are strengthened by them. These connections deepen the educational experience and improve student success and retention, and build civic engagement skills that benefit the university community and the student's home community (Strait, Turk, and Nordyke in: JR Strait, K Nordyke (eds), Pedagogy Of Civic Engagement, High-Impact Practices, and e-Service- L Earning, Stylus Publishing, Virginian, 2015; Bednarz in Journal of Geography in Higher Education 32:87–100, 2008; Mohan in Journal of Geography in Higher Education 19:129–142, 1995). Spatial citizenship, while vital to such engagement and to effective community participation, is seldom taught in traditional pedagogy (Kanwischer, Schulze, and Gryl in: Thomas Jekel, Adrijana Car, Josef Strobl, and Gerald Griesebner (eds), Spatial citizenship—dimensions of a curriculum, Wichmann Verlag, Berlin, 2012). Connecting place to pedagogy with spatially-enabled learning helps students investigate complex global concepts at a manageable local scale. Geography is an intrinsic part of scholarship, to varying degrees, and spatial thinking can bring added dimension and value to the educational process (Vogler in: Thomas Jekel, Adrijana Car, Josef Strobl, and Gerald Griesebner (eds), Wichmann Verlag, Berlin, 2012). The intersectionalities which exist within the community, when examined with a spatial lens, are the core of community geography, a praxis-focused method of engaged scholarship (Shannon in Progress in Human Geography, 10.1177/0309132520961468, 2020). Community-based learning is not clearly defined, yet some established models exist. Place-based learning communities move cohorts of students through a curriculum that is centered on local community issues, with the community as both laboratory and lens, and building place attachment (Schweizer, Davis, and Thompson in Environmental Communication 7:42–62, 2013). Service learning, while less clearly defined, typically involves direct work with community organizations, identifying, investigating, and contributing to solutions for local issues (Strait, Turk, and Nordyke in: JR Strait, K Nordyke (eds), Pedagogy Of Civic Engagement, High-Impact Practices, and e-Service- L Earning, Stylus Publishing, Virginian, 2015; Cal Corps Public Service in Designing Community-Based Courses, 1–45, 2015). Built around the concept of place, the added dimension of improved spatial citizenship benefits both community and students. This paper will review community-based learning as practiced through upper-division service learning courses in geography at two universities, and the development of a new course, as methods of engagement with local communities through a spatial lens. Social infrastructure in the form of community-based organizations such as neighborhood houses provides opportunities for relationship development among newcomers. In this paper, we ask if they also provide opportunity for newcomers to develop social capacity. We explore this question using survey data collected at 15 neighborhood houses in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (N = 675). We find that newcomers report more change in social capacity than non-newcomers. In addition, we find that different types of involvement are differently associated with changes in social capacity. This paper argues that Quaker business ethics can be understood as a MacIntyrean tradition. To do so, it draws on three key MacIntyrean concepts: community, compartmentalisation, and the critique of management. The emphasis in Quaker business ethics on finding unity, as well as the emphasis that Quaker businesses have placed on serving their local areas, accords with MacIntyre's claim that small-scale community is essential to human flourishing. The emphasis on integrity in Quaker business ethics means practitioners are well-placed to resist the compartmentalising pressures of contemporary work. Quaker business ethics is also highly critical of the manipulative forms of management that MacIntyre regards as dominant. As such, Quaker business ethics provides evidence that more morally ameliorative forms of running business organisations is possible, even if they remain difficult to achieve. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Debates about the role of the university in society have been going on for many decades. There have been several calls for a more 'engaged' form of scholarship which applies itself consciously to the pursuit of applied knowledge which can contribute towards solving some of the most pressing societal challenges. Closer collaboration between universities and community groups has been identified as a central component of this form of scholarship. This paper interrogates the literature on the role of universities in society, with a specific focus on university-community partnerships, and discusses the experience of the Philippi CityLab in Cape Town, South Africa to shed some light on the complexities, challenges and rewards of university-community interactions. The case of the Philippi CityLab confirms many of the pre-requisites for 'successful' collaboration between universities and communities as identified in the literature. The paper argues that the ideal of a more engaged scholarship is certainly worth pursuing and that there is no doubt that South African universities do have a role to play in terms of working with communities to find workable solutions to the myriad of development challenges which they face. However, the experience of the Philippi CityLab also shows that stakeholders should not be naïve about the time, effort and investment which these kinds of engagements require and the difficulty of establishing, maintaining and sustaining genuine, mutually beneficial university-community collaborations. Furthermore, a truly engaged scholarship requires a significant transformation of the institutional context within universities in order to not only facilitate and support, but also reward research which seek closer collaboration between universities and communities. Implementation support interventions have helped organizations implement programs with quality and obtain intended outcomes. For example, a recent randomized controlled trial called Preparing to Run Effective Programs (PREP) showed that an implementation support intervention called Getting To Outcomes (GTO) improved implementation of an evidence-based substance use prevention program (CHOICE) run in community-based settings. However, more information is needed on how these interventions affect organizational barriers and facilitators of implementation. This paper aims to identify differences in implementation facilitators and barriers in sites conducting a substance use prevention program with and without GTO. PREP is a cluster-randomized controlled trial testing GTO, a two-year implementation support intervention, in Boys & Girls Clubs. The trial compares 15 Boys & Girls Club sites implementing CHOICE (control group), a five-session evidence-based alcohol and drug prevention program, with 14 Boys & Girls Club sites implementing CHOICE supported by GTO (intervention group). All sites received CHOICE training. Intervention sites also received GTO manuals, training, and onsite technical assistance to help practitioners complete implementation best practices specified by GTO (i.e., GTO steps). During the first year, technical assistance providers helped the intervention group adopt, plan, and deliver CHOICE, and then evaluate and make quality improvements to CHOICE implementation using feedback reports summarizing their data. Following the second year of CHOICE and GTO implementation, all sites participated in semi-structured interviews to identify barriers and facilitators to CHOICE implementation using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR). This paper assesses the extent to which these facilitators and barriers differed between intervention and control group. Intervention sites had significantly higher average ratings than control sites for two constructs from the CFIR process domain: planning and reflecting and evaluating. At the same time, intervention sites had significantly lower ratings on the culture and available resources constructs. Findings suggest that strong planning, evaluation, and reflection-likely improved with GTO support-can facilitate implementation even in the face of perceptions of a less desirable implementation climate. These findings highlight that implementation support, such as GTO, is likely to help low-resourced community-based organizations improve program delivery through a focus on implementation processes. The great surge in the research of community discovery in complex network is going on due to its challenging aspects. Dynamicity and overlapping nature are among the common characteristics of these networks which are the main focus of this paper. In this research, we attempt to approximate the granular human-inspired viewpoints of the networks. This is especially helpful when making decisions with partial knowledge. In line with the principle of granular computing, in which precision is avoided, we define the micro- and macrogranules in two levels of nodes and communities, respectively. The proposed algorithm takes microgranules as input and outputs meaningful communities in rough macrocommunity form. For this purpose, the microgranules are drawn toward each other based on a new rough similarity measure defined in this paper. As a result, the structure of communities is revealed and adapted over time, according to the interactions observed in the network, and the number of communities is extracted automatically. The proposed model can deal with both the low and the sharp changes in the network. The algorithm is evaluated in multiple dynamic datasets and the results confirm the superiority of the proposed algorithm in various measures and scenarios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a macro-social perspective on Jewish populations and societies in the Americas, arguing for a broad transnational view of several different fundamental demographic and ideational processes and trends. The goal is to detect broad commonalities versus regional differences in the Jewish experience on the American continent beyond local national frameworks. Commonalities and differences between Jews in the different parts of the Americas emerge through observing Jewish population distribution and its relation to local human development levels, inter- and intracontinental migration, levels and modes of Jewish education, and patterns of Jewish identification, socialization, and assimilation. I address Jewish interactions with the majority of society by examining frequencies of antisemitism across different countries. Interactions within the Jewish collective itself are assessed by looking at mutual influences through the worldwide institutional network. Conclusions are suggested at the pancontinental level. A variety of quantitative analytical tools are used. Institutionalism is a widely debated term across various disciplines. It is rooted in the traditional old American economists and the new institutionalism, involving individual choices and transaction costs in economic settings. However, institutionalism has been used in many other disciplines, evolving from economic studies to studies on institutions for governing natural resources. This paper aims to review the theoretical concepts of institutions as argued by Douglas North regarding economic performance, and the contrasting sociological point of view linked with the approaches elaborated by Elinor Ostrom in governing the commons. While North points out that formal and informal constraints constitute the instances of institutions, Ostrom contends that institutions are the set of rules that humans use to organize repetitive activities within a community. Although there are some differences in their postures, the similarity of their approaches on institutions as drivers to solve problems leads to the assumption that informal rules, transmitted through generations, can help sustain communities' organizations for governing natural resources overtime. Informal learning organizations such as museums, zoos, aquaria, gardens, and community-based organizations are often positioned as having programming that fill a void that may exist in the lives of youth participants. Often these institutions do not recognize the assets that youth gain from their own homes and communities and bring to bear in these programs and that contribute to their success and persistence in STEM and academics. In this paper, we problematize the prevailing deficit-oriented approach to STEM enrichment programs for youth who are underrepresented in STEM. Drawing from Tara Yosso's theory of community cultural wealth, we describe the STEM identity and trajectories of three individuals as they navigated a long-term, museum-based, informal science learning program. Using Yosso's framework, we describe the capital that youth brought into the program and the ways that they leveraged this capital as they moved from middle to high school, and into their postsecondary studies and early careers in the sciences. Furthermore, we describe how their existing capital intertwined with capital they gained from the museum program in ways that fostered persistence and achievement in science. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the context of the rapid rise of the village revitalization in China, the study examines the impact of grassroots autonomous organizations embedding level and farmer non-agriculture employment on the farmer homestead exit behavior. Based on 421 household surveys in Qionglai, this study obtained three results through empirical analysis. (1) The system embedding level of grassroots autonomous organization and the interests embedding level of grassroots autonomous organization have a significant positive impact on the farmer homestead withdrawal behavior, but the emotion embedding level of grassroots autonomous organizations has a significant negative impact on the farmer homestead withdrawal behavior. (2) The farmer non-agriculture employment level is beneficial for the farmer homestead exit behavior. (3) Further mechanism analysis shows that the non-agricultural employment level plays an inhibitory role in the positive influence of grassroots organizations to mobilize farmers to exit homestead. Therefore, it is suggested that when mobilizing farmers to voluntarily withdraw from the homestead, grassroots organizations should actively improve their embedding level, improve the construction of farmers' social network, and accelerate the accumulation of farmers' material capital. Identifying vital nodes in networks exhibiting a community structure is a fundamental issue. Indeed, community structure is one of the main properties of real-world networks. Recent works have shown that community-aware centrality measures compare favorably with classical measures agnostic about this ubiquitous property. Nonetheless, there is no clear consensus about how they relate and in which situation it is better to use a classical or a community-aware centrality measure. To this end, in this paper, we perform an extensive investigation to get a better understanding of the relationship between classical and community-aware centrality measures reported in the literature. Experiments use artificial networks with controlled community structure properties and a large sample of real-world networks originating from various domains. Results indicate that the stronger the community structure, the more appropriate the community-aware centrality measures. Furthermore, variations of the degree and community size distribution parameters do not affect the results. Finally, network transitivity and community structure strength are the most significant drivers controlling the interactions between classical and community-aware centrality measures. This article explores the design and implementation of the Alberta Healthy Youth Relationships (AHYR) Strategy. The AHYR is a province-wide practice and policy change initiative in Alberta, Canada, that aims to prevent intimate partner violence by promoting service provider and systems capacity to support healthy relationships in adolescence and beyond. Developed in 2012 within a broader initiative called Shift: The Project to End Domestic Violence, the design of the AHYR began with work with provincial policy-makers, in order to create a policy climate that championed primary prevention practice. This policy climate subsequently supported the province-wide implementation of three evidence-based/evidence-informed programs that focus on building the skills and capacities required for healthy youth relationships. Through these programs, the AHYR has reached over 62,000 youth in grades 7-9, 900 teachers, 850 parents, and 1300 adults that work with youth across the province. In addition to these three programs, the AHYR also works with larger systems (e.g., policymakers, local funders, post-secondary institutions) to advance primary prevention practice. In this paper, we describe how the AHYR contributed to a culture of intimate partner violence prevention practice in the province by improving the readiness of funders and system leaders, community organizations, and practitioners to support healthy relationships best practices. We also describe how we used process evaluation to explore the potential for practice change and to inform the design of the next iteration of the AHYR. In China, there is a growing number of urban renewal projects due to the rapid growth of the economy and urbanization. To meet the needs of urban development, urban renewal requires a sound decision-making approach involving various stakeholder groups. However, current urban renewal decision-making is criticized for poor efficiency, equity, and resulting in many unintended adverse outcomes. It is claimed that high-level transaction costs (e.g., a great deal of time spent on negotiation and coordination) are the factors hidden behind the problems. However, few studies have analyzed urban renewal decision-making in a transaction costs perspective. Using the case of Chongqing, this paper aims at adopting transaction costs theory to understand the administrative process of urban renewal decision-making in China. This research focuses on four key stakeholder groups: municipal government, district government, local administrative organizations, and the consulting parties. A transaction costs analytical framework is established. First, the decision-making stages of urban renewal and involved key stakeholder groups are clarified. Second, the transactions done by different stakeholder groups in each stage is identified, thus to analyze what types of transaction costs are generated. Third, the relative levels of transaction costs among different stakeholder groups were measured based on the interview. The empirical analysis reveals how transaction costs occur and affect urban renewal decision-making. Urban health inequities often reflect and follow the geographic patterns of inequality in the social, economic and environmental conditions within a city—the so-called determinants of health. Evidence of patterns within these conditions can support decision-making by identifying where action is urgent and which policies and interventions are needed to mitigate negative impacts and enhance positive impacts. Within the scope of the EU-funded project EURO-HEALTHY (Shaping EUROpean policies to promote HEALTH equitY), the City of Lisbon was selected as a case study to apply a multidimensional and participatory assessment approach of urban health whose purpose was to inform the evaluation of policies and interventions with potential to address local health gaps. In this paper, we present the set of indicators identified as drivers of urban health inequities within the City of Lisbon, exploring the added value of using a spatial indicator framework together with a participation process to orient a place-based assessment and to inform policies aimed at reducing health inequities. Two workshops with a panel of local stakeholders from health and social care services, municipal departments (e.g. urban planning, environment, social rights and education) and non-governmental and community-based organizations were organized. The aim was to engage local stakeholders to identify locally critical situations and select indicators of health determinants from a spatial equity perspective. To support the analysis, a matrix of 46 indicators of health determinants, with data disaggregated at the city neighbourhood scale, was constructed and was complemented with maps. The panel identified critical situations for urban health equity in 28 indicators across eight intervention axes: economic conditions, social protection and security; education; demographic change; lifestyles and behaviours; physical environment; built environment; road safety and healthcare resources and performance. The geographical distribution of identified critical situations showed that all 24 city neighbourhoods presented one or more problems. A group of neighbourhoods systematically perform worse in most indicators from different intervention axes, requiring not only priority action but mainly a multi- and intersectoral policy response. The indicator matrices and maps have provided a snapshot of urban inequities across different intervention axes, making a compelling argument for boosting intersectoral work across municipal departments and local stakeholders in the City of Lisbon. Community resilience has been recognized and promoted as both a vision and a strategy for disaster management. This paper establishes the importance of community resilience in disaster management, describes disaster management phases and the disaster system of care, reviews definitions and dimensions of community resilience and related foundational concepts (social groups, social networks, and social capital), and endorses a conceptual framework for enhancing community resilience through social capital. Resilience, both personal and community resilience, is increased by the social capital that emerges from improved social connections and social networks. Effective disaster management, which requires an informed and engaged public, relies on social networks to connect and support individuals, families, groups, and organizations within the community and to link the community with the disaster system of care. Community disaster teams can identify and engage in activities that promote personal and community resilience, and the team process itself can create social capital that also advances personal and community resilience. The enhancement framework advocated in this paper focuses on the role of social capital in augmenting community resilience derived from people's interactions in groups, social networks, and teams. Since community structure is an important feature of complex network, the study of community detection has attracted more and more attention in recent years. Despite most researchers focus on identifying disjoint communities, communities in many real networks often overlap. In this paper, we proposed a novel MCLC algorithm to discover overlapping communities, which using random walk on the line graph and attraction intensity. Unlike traditional random walk starting from a node, our random walk starts from a link. First we transform an undirected network graph to a weighted line graph, and then random walks on this line graph can be associated with a Markov chain. By calculating the transition probability of the Markov chain, we obtain the similarity between link pairs. Next the links can be clustered into 'link communities' by a linkage method, and these nodes between link communities can be overlapping nodes. When converting the 'link communities' into the 'node communities', we make a definition of attraction intensity to control the overlapping size. Finally the detected communities are permitted overlapped. Experiments on synthetic networks and some real world networks validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm. This paper examines the impact of Covid-19 on community-based violence interventions, especially hospital-based violence interventions and street outreach organizations. Guided by our work in Rochester, New York, we explore how the emergence of covid-19, and the subsequent social restrictions, have hampered the ability of community-based organizations to respond to violence. There has been many recent researches on identifying local community structure in networks. However, most existing approaches require complete information of the graph structure, which is impractical for some network. And most of existing algorithms do not mine important node information in the network. In order to solve these problems, a novel important node discovery algorithm based on local community aggregation and recognition in complex networks is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the connections of the merged nodes with the local communities and their external nodes are comprehensively considered and compared so as to avoid introducing heterogeneous nodes directly from the external expansion of a given node in the process of local community aggregation; and then, edge node identification is adopted to control community clustering so as to determine the extent and size of the local community without intervention. Through computer-generated network and real-network experiments, it is shown that the proposed algorithm can effectively mine and identify its important node based on a given local community and improve the quality of community detection compared with other state-of-art algorithms. Community detection is a critical issue in the field of complex networks. Capable of extracting inherent patterns and structures in high dimensional data, the non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) method has become one of the hottest research topics in community detection recently. However, this method has a significant drawback; most community detection methods using NMF require the number of communities to be preassigned or determined by searching for the best community structure among all candidates. To address the problem, in this paper, we use an improved density peak clustering to obtain the number of cores as the pre-defined parameter of nonnegative matrix factorization. Then we adopt nonnegative double singular value decomposition initialization which can rapidly reduce the approximation error of nonnegative matrix factorization. Finally, we compare and analyze the performance of different algorithms on artificial networks and real-world networks. Many real-world networks display hidden community structures with important potential implications in their dynamics. Many algorithms highly relevant to network analysis have been introduced to unveil community structures. Accurate assessment and comparison of alternative solutions are typically approached by benchmarking the target algorithm(s) on a set of diverse networks that exhibit a broad range of controlled features, ensuring the assessment contemplates multiple representative properties. Tools have been developed to synthesize bipartite networks, but none of the previous solutions address the issue of generating networks with overlapping community structures. This is the motivation for the BNOC tool introduced in this paper. It allows synthesizing bipartite networks that mimic a wide range of features from real-world networks, including overlapping community structures. Multiple parameters ensure flexibility in controlling the scale and topological properties of the networks and embedded communities. BNOC's applicability is illustrated assessing and comparing two popular overlapping community detection algorithms on bipartite networks, namely HLC and OSLOM. Results reveal interesting features of the algorithms in this scenario and confirm the relevant role played by a suitable benchmarking tool. Finally, to validate our approach, we present results comparing networks synthesized with BNOC with those obtained with an existing benchmarking tool and with already established sets of synthetic networks, in two different scenarios. While governing data as an organizational asset has clear benefits, mobilizing an organization to implement data governance remains elusive for practitioners. On that account, this paper examines why governing data is difficult in local government organizations. Based on a literature review and an empirical case study, we establish the inherent challenges and build on the notion of collective action to theorize the problem of data governance. Following an engaged scholarship approach, we collect empirical material through six group interviews with 34 representatives from 13 different Danish municipalities. We extend existing data governance research with our problem triangle that identifies and explicates the complex relations between six distinct challenges: value, collaboration, capabilities, overview, practices, and politics. We demonstrate the value in theorizing data governance as a collective action problem and argue for the necessity of ensuring researchers and practitioners achieve a common understanding of the inherent challenges, as a first step towards developing data governance solutions that are viable in practice. Poverty is an important issue for third world Sub-Saharan African countries such as Ethiopia. To assist with poverty alleviation, a great number of nongovernmental organizations have moved resources into the region, but the problem has not significantly improved. This paper studies the Jerusalem Children and Community Development Organization (JeCCDO), an NGO that has engaged in poverty alleviation programs in Ethiopia for more than 35 years. The study examines communication practices used by JeCCDO as part of its poverty alleviation programs in Negede Woito community (Bahir Dar, Ethiopia). We use a qualitative research methodology to assess the organization's communication practices, as well as the challenges it and the Negede Woito community face. Poverty is perceived as lack of resources by JeCCDO, but the community also prioritizes other forms of poverty such as psychological and cultural. Our findings reveal that JeCCDO is renowned for using a social enterprise development model and a participatory communication approach. However, in practice we find these are not used. In the models, endogenous knowledge and grassroots communication were vital to community development, but JeCCDO did not implement them during planning, implementing, and evaluating community-based programs. Community workers who coordinated the organization and the community were Negede Woito community members. Besides grassroots communication, knowing the context and living situation of the community is mandatory for development agents. JeCCDO did not contextualize development efforts, such as sheep fattening and poultry for people who did not have shelter. In conclusion, we propose that nongovernmental organizations and development workers should reconsider their communication contexts and practices while launching new poverty alleviation programs. Identifying the evolving community structure of social networks has recently drawn increasing attention. Evolutionary clustering, previously proposed to detect the evolution of clusters over time, presents a temporal smoothness framework to simultaneously maximize clustering accuracy and minimize the clustering drift between two successive time steps. Under this framework, evolving patterns of communities in dynamic networks were detected by finding the best trade-off between the clustering accuracy and temporal smoothness. However, two main drawbacks in previous methods limit the effectiveness of dynamic community detection. One is that the classic operators implemented by existing methods cannot avoid that a node is often inter-connected to most of its neighbors. The other is that those methods take it for granted that an inter-connection cannot exist between nodes clustered into the same community, which results in a limited search space. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-objective evolutionary clustering algorithm called DECS, to detect the evolving community structure in dynamic social networks. Specifically, we develop a migration operator cooperating with efficient operators to ensure that nodes and their most neighbors are grouped together, and use a genome matrix encoding the structure information of networks to expand the search space. DECS calculates the modularity based on the genome matrix as one of objectives to optimize. Experimental results on synthetic networks and real-world social networks demonstrate that DECS outperforms in both clustering accuracy and smoothness, contrasted with other state-of-the-art methods. Advances in public transit modeling and smart card technologies can reveal detailed contact patterns of passengers. A natural way to represent such contact patterns is in the form of networks. In this paper we utilize known contact patterns from a public transit assignment model in a major metropolitan city, and propose the development of two novel network structures, each of which elucidate certain aspects of passenger travel behavior. We first propose the development of a transfer network, which can reveal passenger groups that travel together on a given day. Second, we propose the development of a community network, which is derived from the transfer network, and captures the similarity of travel patterns among passengers. We then explore the application of each of these network structures to identify the most frequently used travel paths, i.e., routes and transfers, in the public transit system, and model epidemic spreading risk among passengers of a public transit network, respectively. In the latter our conclusions reinforce previous observations, that routes crossing or connecting to the city center in the morning and afternoon peak hours are the most "dangerous" during an outbreak. The explosion of network science has permitted an understanding of how the structure of social networks affects the dynamics of social contagion. In community-based interventions with spill-over effects, identifying influential spreaders may be harnessed to increase the spreading efficiency of social contagion, in terms of time needed to spread all the largest connected component of the network. Several strategies have been proved to be efficient using only data and simulation-based models in specific network topologies without a consensus of an overall result. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to benchmark the spreading efficiency of seeding strategies related to network structural properties and sizes. We simulate spreading processes on empirical and simulated social networks within a wide range of densities, clustering coefficients, and sizes. We also propose three new decentralized seeding strategies that are structurally different from well-known strategies: community hubs, ambassadors, and random hubs. We observe that the efficiency ranking of strategies varies with the network structure. In general, for sparse networks with community structure, decentralized influencers are suitable for increasing the spreading efficiency. By contrast, when the networks are denser, centralized influencers outperform. Influence Maximization, aiming at selecting a small set of seed users in a social network to maximize the spread of influence, has attracted considerable attention recently. Most existing influence maximization algorithms focus on pure networks, while in many real-world social networks, nodes are often associated with a rich set of attributes or features, aka attributed networks. Moreover, most of existing influence maximization methods suffer from the problems of high computational cost and no performance guarantee, as these methods heavily depend on analysis and exploitation of network structure. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm to solve community-based influence maximization problem in attributed networks, which consists of three steps: community detection, candidate community generation and seed node selection. Specifically, we first propose the candidate community generation process, which utilizes information of community structure as well as node attribute to narrow down possible community candidates. We then propose a model to predict influence strength between nodes in attributed network, which takes advantage of topology structure similarity and attribute similarity between nodes in addition to social interaction strength, thus improve the prediction accuracy comparing to the existing methods significantly. Finally, we select seed nodes by proposing the computation method of influence set, through which the marginal influence gain of nodes can be calculated directly, avoiding tens of thousands of Monte Carlo simulations and ultimately making the algorithm more efficient. Experiments on four real social network datasets demonstrate that our proposed algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art influence maximization algorithms in both influence spread and running time. This paper examines the determinants of the density of nonprofits registered in the USA by using alternative measures of government services and community conditions to test government failure theory and interdependence theory. Specifically, we examined the relationship between governments and nonprofits in the fields of art, health, and human services, with an emphasis on the level of the provision of public services, the heterogeneous demands of populations, and for-profit service providers. We found that the size of government, measured as government wage and fiscal decentralization, was negatively associated with the density of nonprofits, while government fragmentation was positively related to the density of nonprofits. The heterogeneity of community populations tended to increase nonprofit density. Taken together, therefore, our results offer more support for the government failure theory than the interdependence theory. Also, our findings that for-profit service organizations were positively related to the density of nonprofits call for researchers to pay attention to nonprofit partners and competitors in future studies. Community structures are very common in complex networks. Detecting these communities is important for understanding the hidden features of networks. Besides, each community usually has one leader, which presents its significant influence over the whole community. However, most existing methods just focus on the problem of graph clustering, ignoring the role of community leaders. To solve this problem, in this paper, we propose a novel leader-aware community detection algorithm, which can find community structures as well as leaders of each community. This algorithm measures the leadership of each node and lets each one adhere to its local leader, forming dependence trees. Once all dependence trees are definitely settled, the community structures emerge because one tree actually is a cluster. Additionally, each root node of the tree is exactly the leader of corresponding community. This method can quickly determine the belonging of each node. In complex networks, especially social networks, networks could be divided into disjoint partitions. However, nodes could be partitioned such that the number of internal edges (the edges between the vertices within the same partition) to the number of outer edges (edges between two vertices of different partitions) is high. Generally, these partitions are called communities. Detecting community structure helps data scientists to extract meaningful information from networks and analyze them. In the last decades, various algorithms have been proposed to detect communities in graphs, and each one has examined this issue from a different perspective. Yet, most of these algorithms have a significant time complexity and costly calculations that make them unsuitable to detect communities in large graphs with millions of edges and nodes. Label propagation algorithm (LPA), a fast random-based algorithm, can easily detect communities in big graphs, but its accuracy compared to other algorithms is low. In this paper, we have improved LPA accuracy, and to achieve this goal, we propagate label based on the Local Edge Betweenness score. The proposed algorithm, named Weighted Label Propagation based on Local Edge Betweenness, is able to identify distinct communities in both the real-world and artificial networks. Also, the proposed algorithm could detect communities in weighted graphs. Microbial metagenome analysis has proven its usefulness to investigate the microbiomes present in technical engineered ecosystems such as anaerobic digestion systems. The analysis of the total microbial genomic DNA allows the detailed determination of both the microbial community structure and its functionality. In addition, it enables to study the response of the microbiome to alterations in technical process parameters. Strategies of functional microbial networks to face abiotic stressors, e.g., resistance, resilience, and reorganization, can be evaluated with respect to overall process optimization. The objective of this paper is to review the main metagenomic tools used for effective studies on anaerobic digestion systems in monitoring the dynamic of the microbiomes, as well as the factors that have been identified so far as limiting the metagenomic studies in this ecosystems. This paper traces the evolution as well as key elements, and provides examples of implementation of participatory development and community-based conservation, two concepts that resemble distant cousins in the intersecting worlds of development assistance and environmental conservation. The paper examines the connections between the concepts, the implications of participatory development for community-based conservation, and the reasons for the differences in their conceptualization and implementation. The paper is based on a review of the literature in both fields and on the authors' research and experience with participatory development and community-based conservation. Several keys to understanding the disconnection between the concepts emerge; intellectual and pragmatic origins of and impetus for the concepts, the expertise and interests of their promoters, and the differing emphasis on participation as means versus end. In this article, we ask how traces of political violence in the Atacama Desert and in the Sonoran Desert are created and how they are (or are not) transformed into archives. The political violence we study is of different types and takes place in different periods: state violence under the civil–military dictatorship (1973-1990) in the Atacama; violence as a product of migratory policies (from 1994 to the present) of the US–Mexican border in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona; and, mass death and disappearance as the product of successive governments' "war on drugs" (from 2006 to the present) in Sonora, Mexico. This article is based on our academic ethnographic work and volunteering with grassroots organizations. In these three arid spaces, we met different groups: family members and activists searching for political prisoners disappeared in the 1970s by the Pinochet regime; activists searching for migrants, dead or alive, lost in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona; and families digging in the earth, unearthing clandestine graves and hoping one day to find the remains of their loved ones. We argue that these different search practices create traces when these groups uncover what the perpetrators wanted to hide. These processes that create traces, then create archives when the situated and lived experience of searching and tracing is translated into artifacts that can be detached from their context and acquire multiple uses outside their place of production.
