In the development of physical theories, thought experiments play a crucial role. Research on this topic began in 1976 and has continued to the present. This study aims to provide a more complete picture of the progress of thought experiments over the past two decades. To achieve this, this study employs bibliometric mapping methods. A total of 679 published papers were analyzed, including articles (504), conference papers (92), and book chapters (83). This data was retrieved from the Scopus database. The study's findings reveal that research and publications on thought experiments are highly valued and have received significant attention over the past eight years. According to the findings, 90% of the top 20 source titles contributing to thought experiments are from journals in the first and second quartiles (Q1 and Q2). This quartile ranking shows the quality and significant influence of a journal. The geographical distribution indicates that the United States contributes the most to thought experiments research, with 213 documents, 2592 citations, and 47 links. We also identified several prospective keywords that could be the focus of future research, including artificial intelligence, physics education, fiction, God, theology, productive imagination, technology, speculative design, and critical design. Background: The Mediterranean Sea is a region characterized by high seismic activity, with at least 200 tsunami events recorded from the fourth century to the present twenty-first century. Numerous studies have been conducted to understand past tsunami events, earthquake–tsunami generation, tsunami recurrence periods, tsunami vulnerability zones, and tsunami hazard mitigation strategies. Therefore, gaining insights into future trends and opportunities in Mediterranean Sea tsunami research is crucial for significantly contributing to all relevant aspects. This study aims to assess such trends and opportunities through a scientometric analysis of publications indexed by Web of Science from 2000 to 2023. Results: Based on a selection of 329 publications, including research articles, review articles, book chapters, and conference papers, published between 2000 and 2023, Italy has the highest number of publications and citations in this field. The number of publications has increased significantly, especially after the 2004 Indian Ocean, 2011 Tohoku, and 2018 Palu tsunamis. According to the keyword analysis, the terms "tsunami", "earthquake", "hazard", "wave", "Mediterranean", "coast", and "tectonic" were the most frequently used in these publications. Research themes consist of four classifications: motor themes, such as seismic hazard; specific but well-developed themes, like tsunamiite; emerging or disappearing themes, for example, climate change; and general or basic themes, such as equations and megaturbidite. The number of publications related to the motor theme classification continued to grow throughout 2000–2023. Topics from 2011–2023 are more complex compared to 2000–2010, characterized by the emergence of new keywords such as evacuation planning, risk reduction, risk mitigation, building vulnerability, coastal vulnerability, climate change, probabilistic tsunami hazard assessment (PTVA-3 and PTVA-4). However, topics that were popular in the 2000–2010 period (e.g., paleotsunami deposits, earthquake, and tsunami propagation analysis) also increased in 2011–2023. Conclusions: Research topics with high centrality and density such as seismic hazard will continue to develop and prospect. The cluster network of this topic includes seismoturbidites, sedimentary features, tsunami modeling, active faults, catalog, and historical earthquakes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Additive manufacturing (AM) offers the advantage of producing complex parts more efficiently and in a lesser production cycle time as compared to conventional subtractive manufacturing processes. It also provides higher flexibility for diverse applications by facilitating the use of a variety of materials and different processing technologies. With the exceptional growth of computing capability, researchers are extensively using machine learning (ML) techniques to control the performance of every phase of AM processes, such as design, process parameters modeling, process monitoring and control, quality inspection, and validation. Also, ML methods have made it possible to develop cybermanufacturing for AM systems and thus revolutionized Industry 4.0. This paper presents the state-of-the-art applications of ML in solving numerous problems related to AM processes. We give an overview of the research trends in this domain through a systematic literature review of relevant journal articles and conference papers. We summarize recent development and existing challenges to point out the direction of future research scope. Moving objects databases (MODs) have been extensively studied due to their wide variety of applications including traffic management, tourist service and mobile commerce. However, queries in natural languages are still not supported in MODs. Since most users are not familiar with structured query languages, it is essentially important to bridge the gap between natural languages and the underlying MODs system commands. Motivated by this, we design a natural language interface for moving objects, named NALMO. In general, we use semantic parsing in combination with a location knowledge base and domain-specific rules to interpret natural language queries. We design a corpus of moving objects queries for model training, which is later used to determine the query type. Extracted entities from parsing are mapped through deterministic rules to perform query composition. NALMO is able to well translate moving objects queries into structured (executable) languages. We support five kinds of queries including time interval queries, range queries, nearest neighbor queries, trajectory similarity queries and join queries. We develop the system in a prototype system SECONDO and evaluate our approach using 280 natural language queries extracted from popular conference and journal papers in the domain of moving objects. Four volunteers give the system satisfaction and related suggestions through three rounds of independent tests. Experimental results show that (i) NALMO achieves accuracy and precision 96.8% and 81.1%, respectively, (ii) the average time cost of translating a query is 1.49s, and (iii) the average satisfaction is 95.5%. Preserving customers' expectations and understanding factors affecting their purchasing decisions are crucial in designing effective marketing and advertising strategies. However, constantly and swiftly changing the customers' interests and consumption behaviors make it inevitable to utilize sophisticated tools and approaches based on advanced technologies. Among them, by measuring the customers' physiological and neural signals, studying the customers' cognitive and affective responses to marketing stimuli, neuromarketing provides deep insight into the customers' motivations, preferences, and decisions. Recently, the internet of everything (IoE) has brought many new opportunities to the industry and has attracted the attention of many researchers in recent years. The main objective of this paper is to address how the IoE would empower neuromarketing techniques. Hence, an in-depth understanding of current research issues as well as emerging trends would help meet this goal. In this paper, a comprehensive review has been done by reviewing numerous journal and conference papers from various academic databases (sciencedirect.com, IEEE Xplore, Springer, Elsevier, Wiley, ACM digital library) based on applying various filtrations on specific keywords to identify and categorize the IoE devices in the neuromarketing field. In particular, we discussed the importance and the applications of IoE gadgets and devices, especially wearable medical technologies in eight neuromarketing techniques. This article is a follow-up contribution that extends the conference paper (Nxumalo, in: Laarman, Sokolova (eds)Model Checking Software - 27th International Symposium, 2021) which presented the spotlight abstraction method to enable an efficient model checking of schedulability properties of real-time operating systems. Our approach is based on iterative spotlight abstraction whereby the real-time task queue is divided into a so-called spotlight and a shade. Initially, an abstract state space model is generated from the spotlight, which contains a small number of tasks that appear at the front of the queue and the shade contains the remaining tasks. The schedulability of the spotlight tasks is model checked, whereas the behavior of the shade is summarized, and the result is saved for later re-use. If this result is still inconclusive, more tasks are iteratively brought from the shade into the spotlight, with which the model checker can proceed. These steps are repeated until a decisive schedulability result is obtained. In this article, we enrich the encoding of real-time systems into timed automata by separating operations over clock variables from operations based on other variables such as Boolean and integers. We enforce to maintain a reasonable size of the spotlight model by applying counter abstraction to the tasks that were previously confirmed schedulable in the previous iterations. We compare our approach against Timestool and RTLib, an Uppaal template, in the analysis of the schedulability of real-time tasks for the First-In-First-Out and Shortest-Deadline-First scheduling policies. Many problems in imaging and low-level vision can be formulated as nonconvex variational problems. A promising class of approaches to tackle such problems are convex relaxation methods, which consider a lifting of the energy functional to a higher-dimensional space. However, they come with increased memory requirements due to the lifting. The present paper is an extended version of the earlier conference paper by Ye et al. (in: DAGM German conference on pattern recognition (GCPR), 2021) which combined two recent approaches to make lifting more scalable: product-space relaxation and sublabel-accurate discretization. Furthermore, it is shown that a simple cutting-plane method can be used to solve the resulting semi-infinite optimization problem. This journal version extends the previous conference work with additional experiments, a more detailed outline of the complete algorithm and a user-friendly introduction to functional lifting methods. Semi interlocking masonry (SIM) is an innovative masonry building system which is being developed in the Centre for Infrastructure Performance and Reliability at The University of Newcastle, Australia. It utilizes a special method of interlocking of mortar-less engineered masonry panels made of semi-interlocking masonry (SIM) units which possess significant energy dissipation capacity due to friction on sliding bed joints between units of the panel during a seismic event. This special method of interlocking SIM bricks allows relative sliding of unit courses in-plane of a wall and prevents out-of-plane relative movement of units. Because all bed joints in a SIM panel are sliding joints, SIM panels can withstand large in-plane displacements without damage. To test SIM panels, a special steel frame with pin connections at each corner was designed and built. The arrangement with pin connections allows application of in-plane shear distortion to the panel of up to 120 mm. The study presented herein focused on the experimental investigation of displacement capacities of three different types of panels (panel with open gap between the steel frame and top of the panel, panel with foam in the gap, panel with grout in the gap) with two types of SIM units. The paper expands significantly from the previously published conference paper and examines the behavior of SIM panels subject to 100 mm (5% storey drift) cyclic in-plane lateral displacement on six SIM panels. The horizontal and vertical movement of SIM units were recorded using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) every 10 s over approximately 8 h of testing. This study reveals that the DIC displacement outputs show good agreement with displacements measured using traditional instrumentation, even at large displacements (up to 100 mm). The structural performance of the SIM panels is also analyzed and potential joint opening widths are quantified under large displacement by plotting the outputs from DIC results. Parametric runtime verification is the process of verifying properties of execution traces of (data carrying) events produced by a running system. This paper continues our work exploring the relationship between specification techniques for parametric runtime verification. Here we consider the correspondence between trace-slicing automata-based approaches and rule systems. The main contribution is a translation from quantified automata to rule systems, which has been implemented in Scala. This then allows us to highlight the key differences in how the two formalisms handle data, an important step in our wider effort to understand the correspondence between different specification languages for parametric runtime verification. This paper extends a previous conference version of this paper with further examples, a proof of correctness, and an optimisation based on a notion of redundancy observed during the development of the translation. Background: Despite the evidence supporting the effectiveness of active learning in undergraduate STEM courses, the adoption of active learning has been slow. One barrier to adoption is instructors' concerns about students' affective and behavioral responses to active learning, especially student resistance. Numerous education researchers have documented their use of active learning in STEM classrooms. However, there is no research yet that systematically analyzes these studies for strategies to aid implementation of active learning and address students' affective and behavioral responses. In this paper, we conduct a systematic literature review and identify 29 journal articles and conference papers that researched active learning, affective and behavioral student responses, and recommended at least one strategy for implementing active learning. In this paper, we ask: (1) What are the characteristics of studies that examine affective and behavioral outcomes of active learning and provide instructor strategies? (2) What instructor strategies to aid implementation of active learning do the authors of these studies provide? Results: In our review, we noted that most active learning activities involved in-class problem solving within a traditional lecture-based course (N = 21). We found mostly positive affective and behavioral outcomes for students' self-reports of learning, participation in the activities, and course satisfaction (N = 23). From our analysis of the 29 studies, we identified eight strategies to aid implementation of active learning based on three categories. Explanation strategies included providing students with clarifications and reasons for using active learning. Facilitation strategies entailed working with students and ensuring that the activity functions as intended. Planning strategies involved working outside of the class to improve the active learning experience. Conclusion: To increase the adoption of active learning and address students' responses to active learning, this study provides strategies to support instructors. The eight strategies are listed with evidence from numerous studies within our review on affective and behavioral responses to active learning. More than 50 million journal papers will have been published by the end of 2019 with 2 million more journal papers published every year. The number of conference papers is even higher, and millions of other types of scientific research are added to the knowledge base every year. Scientific databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed index millions of scientific papers and Google Scholar indexes a huge amount of scientific knowledge across diverse domains. However, current systems provide long lists of results when users attempt to find relevant papers, leaving them with little choice other than manually skimming through the lists. This article surveys different techniques used to identify relevant research papers by knowledge-based organizations. We categorized current literature content as content, metadata, collaborative filtering, and citation based techniques and identified the strengths and limitation for each approach. Further, we evaluated the published techniques and research-based products used to identify relevant documents and identified the strengths and limitations of each approach. This research will greatly help to understand current state-of-the-art techniques internal workings for finding relevant papers, understand the relevant strengths and limitations, and explore previously proposed techniques targeting this area. A thorough literature review is conducted that pertains to low-salinity-based enhanced oil recovery (EOR). This is meant to be a comprehensive review of all the refereed published papers, conference papers, master's theses and other reports in this area. The review is specifically focused on establishing various relations/characteristics or "screening criteria" such as: (1) classification/grouping of clays that have shown or are amenable to low-salinity benefits; (2) clay types vs. range of residual oil saturations; (3) API gravity and down hole oil viscosity range that is amenable for low salinity; (4) salinity range for EOR benefits; (5) pore sizes, porosity, absolute permeability and wettability range for low-salinity EOR; (6) continuous low-salinity injection vs. slug-wise injection; (7) grouping of possible low-salinity mechanisms; (8) contradictions or similarities between laboratory experiments and field evidence; and (9) compositional variations in tested low-salinity waters. A proposed screening criterion for low-salinity waterflooding is introduced. It can be concluded that either one or more of these mechanisms, or a combination thereof, may be the case-specific mechanism, i.e., depending on the particular oil–brine–rock (OBR) system rather than something that is "universal" or universally applicable. Therefore, every OBR system that is unique or specific ought to be individually investigated to determine the benefits (if any) of low-salinity water injection; however, the proposed screening criteria may help in narrowing down some of the dominant responsible mechanisms. Although this review primarily focuses on sandstones, given the prominence of carbonates containing ~60% of the world's oil reserves, a summary of possible mechanisms and screening criteria, pertaining to low-salinity waterflooding, for carbonates is also included. Finally, the enhancement of polymer flooding by using low-salinity water as a makeup water to further decrease the residual oil saturation is also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Runtime verification can be used to find bugs early, during software development, by monitoring test executions against formal specifications (specs). The quality of runtime verification depends on the quality of the specs. While previous research has produced many specs for the Java API, manually or through automatic mining, there has been no large-scale study of their bug-finding effectiveness. Our conference paper presented the first in-depth study of the bug-finding effectiveness of previously proposed specs. We used JavaMOP to monitor 182 manually written and 17 automatically mined specs against more than 18K manually written and 2.1M automatically generated test methods in 200 open-source projects. The average runtime overhead was under 4.3 × . We inspected 652 violations of manually written specs and (randomly sampled) 200 violations of automatically mined specs. We reported 95 bugs, out of which developers already fixed or accepted 76. However, most violations, 82.81% of 652 and 97.89% of 200, were false alarms. Based on our empirical results, we conclude that (1) runtime verification technology has matured enough to incur tolerable runtime overhead during testing, and (2) the existing API specifications can find many bugs that developers are willing to fix; however, (3) the false alarm rates are worrisome and suggest that substantial effort needs to be spent on engineering better specs and properly evaluating their effectiveness.
