This chapter uses autoethnography to examine game-based learning approaches to teaching. It begins with an analysis of educational games and concludes that curricular games are goal-driven simulations where players can experiment in a risk-free environment. The author then pulls out the essential elements of game-based learning and examines ways in which free and/or ubiquitous technology tools can be used to design curricular games. This chapter addresses common misconceptions about creating digital games and counters them by showing how technological tools that are commonly used by educators can be repurposed into game creation tools. It emphasizes a game design process where the game is derived from the content in order to enable students to engage in deeper learning. The chapter concludes by encouraging educators to explore and make their own discoveries and to share these discoveries with others.

Recently, various ubiquitous technological advancements have benefitted knowledge sharing in different sectors. As there is a close relationship between safety knowledge and awareness, this paper examines the use of Web 2.0, Internet of Things (IoT) and mobile applications in construction safety knowledge sharing for enhancing safety awareness at work. The use of such technologies can improve internal and external communication as well as collaboration. A quantitative survey was conducted to investigate the willingness and uptake of advanced technologies in the Hong Kong construction industry. Out of 23 respondents, 16 were eager to use mobile applications to share safety information. Regarding safety knowledge sharing via Web 2.0, respondents perceived a variety of barriers for not using it, such as the need to protect their company’s privacy issues made them hesitant to share knowledge regarding safety issues; others were of the opinion that Web 2.0 was managed by the elite in the organisation. Only three respondents have used Web 2.0 platforms. The willingness to apply IoT was relatively negative due to the perceived extra operation costs.

One of the biggest challenges faced by cities today is maintaining their roads. Smart Road Maintenance can lead to more operational efficiency, timely response to citizens, and cost-effectiveness. Efficient and effective management and maintenance of a city’s road infrastructure not only improves the quality of life for its citizens, but also makes the city more attractive for business investment. The IBM Krakow SWG Laboratory, in the cooperation with AGH University of Science & Technology, Krakow and the city of Krakow, created an innovative solution for road maintenance problems. In this paper we describe the challenges currently faced by many cities in road maintenance and how one could bring low-cost, ubiquitous technology to help cope with those challenges. This project also exemplifies the Smarter Planet/Smarter Cities initiatives being promoted by IBM worldwide.

We present research-in-progress on an attentive in-store mobile recommender system that is integrated into the user’s glasses and worn during purchase decisions. The system makes use of the Attentive Mobile Interactive Cognitive Assistant (AMICA) platform prototype designed as a ubiquitous technology that supports people in their everyday-life. This paper gives a short overview of the technology and presents results from a pre-study in which we collected real-life eye-tracking data during decision processes in a supermarket. The data helps us to characterize and identify the different decision contexts based on differences in the observed attentional processes. AMICA provides eye-tracking data that can be used to classify decision-making behavior in real-time to make a recommendation process context-aware.
