Ocular color-coded duplex sonography (OCCS) is an easy noninvasive technique with high potential for diagnosis and therapy in diseases with raised intracranial pressure. However, OCCS has not gained widespread use in neurological practice. In this chapter, we describe the OCCS technique and main safety settings to reduce potential risks of the procedure (thermal and/or cavitation). Application of OCCS is the real-time noninvasive estimation of intracranial pressure (ICP) in ICU and/or emergency department by measuring the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD), papilla prominence measurement (papilledema), pupillary reactivity, and hemodynamic changes in the intraorbital vessels (flow velocities and spectral waveforms analysis).

Current trends, such as globalization, demographic change, and individualization are increasing the complexity of production. In many production applications, holistic decision-making presents a challenge due to the lack of transparency, inadequate databases, and the unknown effects of decision alternatives [1]. Digital twins as high potential decision support tools are widely recognized as addressing these challenges in production. The design process, however, still requires research and methodologies. This paper presents a requirements-oriented procedure for designing digital twins in production. The successive specification of requirements results in validated digital twin concepts for various applications.

This paper aims to understand the development of innovation clusters and hotspots of cutting-edge research in Biotechnology across the world, clusters understood as segments of an innovation system, gathering research institutes, universities, startups, enterprises and funding actors; and hotspots defined as clusters focused on frontier R&D, with economic high potential. The choice of Biotech as study object embeds the special characteristics of this branch of science: long term research with high uncertainty of results, huge funding and few marketable products. The analysis is based on 18 selected tendencies pointed by European Commission as Radical Innovation Breakthroughs and the frequency of these tendencies in several patent databases, focused on which countries are the main applicants since 2005. As a sub product we observed the change, in the studied range of time, of the main axis of Biotech innovation beyond USA, Europe and Japan. The analytical approach is based on literature review and quantitative screening of patent bases.

The development of concrete mixtures with low potential for cracking is necessary for durable, sustainable, and efficient concrete construction. Due to the wide range of crack-inducing parameters, efforts on the development, evaluation, and specification of concrete mixtures with low potential for cracking are paramount. On the design phase, criteria related to the selection and performance of concrete mixture constituents, mixture proportions, and laboratory testing are necessary for crack mitigation. During concrete production, efforts to maintain control of batch water and water-to-cementitious ratio are paramount. Results presented in this paper will compare the performance of concrete mixtures with low and high potential for cracking in both the laboratory and field.

The following chapter discusses the main forms of financing for social entrepreneurship. The ultimate goal of social entrepreneurship is to create social value. To this end, financial means act as intermediaries to achieve this goal. These means must be aligned with the mission, vision, and values of the new venture. Therefore, there must be certain parallelism in the modus operandi of the entrepreneurial companies and the institutions supporting their launch in the market with economic resources. Since social entrepreneurship arises as a new paradigm to create the business, its financing sources represent a new method to obtain economic resources. Ethical banking is the core concept of these alternative ways of financing; thus, this chapter revolves around its foundations. Social crowdfunding and incubators are presented as financing sources with high potential for social entrepreneurs through the lens of practical examples, although government aid and subsidies also deserve special attention.

The resilience paradigm constitutes that systems can overcome arbitrary system failures and recover quickly. This paradigm has already been applied successfully in multiple disciplines outside the engineering domain. For the development and design of engineering systems the realization of this resilience concept is more challenging and often leads to confusion, because technical systems are characterized by a lower intrinsic complexity compared to, e.g., socio-technical systems. The transfer of the resilience paradigm to technical systems though also offers high potential for the engineering domain. We present results from four-year research on transferring the resilience paradigm to the engineering domain based on mechanical engineering systems and summarize relevant design approaches to quantify the potentials of this paradigm. Furthermore, we present important challenges we faced while transferring this paradigm and present the lessons learned from this interdisciplinary research.

This study introduced Kinect as motion capturing device and its potential as analysis platform by developing graphical user interface (GUI) for observational gait analysis system. Spatiotemporal parameters and kinematic gait parameters of three normal individuals and two individuals with knee osteoarthritis were recorded using the proposed system and VICON system simultaneously. Correlation study were conducted between the proposed system and VICON system. The proposed system successfully generates and display the observational gait analysis results. The generated results show a strong correlation with VICON system and have no significant difference. As a conclusion, the developed system for gait analysis has high potential to be utilize in clinical settings. Some improvements should be done to increase the practicability of the system.

Purpose: The paper is aimed at designing the specific-organized typological structure of economic entities through the study of foreign approaches and revealing the influencing factors in developing scientific and technological competitive advantages. Design/methodology/approach: From the perspective of discovering the place and role of science, process, and technology, we have carried out a retrospective comparative analysis of the basic concepts of competitive advantages. We have shown that peculiarities of different types of business entities as actors of competitive advantages are underestimated in these concepts. Relying on an integrated analysis of documents and academic sources, we have suggested a typological structure of business entities. It includes types of industry entities that possess high potential for the development of industrial policy measures on scientific and technological competitive advantages. To arrange and bring together the heterogeneous types of industry entities occurring in various information sources, we have highlighted five generalizing typological features, in particular, the specific nature of the space-industry borderlines of the company’s activity, the time-dimension framework, competitive strategies, and business models. Also, we have performed a content analysis of various sources to uncover the main factors that influence scientific and technological competitive advantages. We especially emphasized the certain level of the country’s socio-economic development as a factor of the successful development of top technologies. Findings: It is recommended to take into consideration the suggested typological structure in developing industrial policy measures on scientific and technological competitive advantages, including ones to counter the occurring obstacles. Along with that, one should bear in mind the different hazards of obstacles for different types of industry entities, including peculiarities of the industry.

Baccharis dracunculifolia DC. (Asteraceae) is an aromatic plant species widely distributed across and along South American countries where it grows in different environments, even being considered, in some cases, as a hard to control weed. Its essential oil is highly appreciated in the fragrance/perfumery industry by its woody, floral, and green notes; mainly attributed to (E)-nerolidol and other sesquiterpene alcohols. Recent research has demonstrated a wide range of applications for the essential oil besides its aromatic properties. Although B. dracunculifolia cannot be considered as a medicinal plant for most of the indigenous communities in South America (except for Brazil), modern pharmacological research has demonstrated its high potential for the development of new therapeutic drugs, mainly with antiulcer, anti-inflammatory, antiparasitic and anticancer effect. The special literature regarding B. dracunculifolia is profuse and thus, this chapter attempts to summarize the principal knowledge about this species.

Since time immemorial, plants have been the basis of many traditional medicines and continue to provide new remedies to mankind. Indian Himalaya is a biogeographically unique region, having critically endangered and threatened endemic plant diversity, and is known for more than 8000 plant species of which 1748 are known to have medicinal properties. These plants including herbs and aromatic plants have played an important role in the lives of tribal peoples living in the Himalayas by providing them essential day-to-day products such as food and medicines. Herbs can act as stimuli to the digestive system, relieve digestive disorders, and have some antiseptic properties and several other remedial properties. These herbals are rare and contain high nutritional and medicinal properties and have incredible demands from pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and many other herbal-based industries. Global consumption of plant-based nutraceuticals has received substantial attention because of their physiological benefits and other therapeutic effects. Therefore, in recent years, the demand for plant-based nutraceutical products has progressively increased. This chapter focuses on providing an indigenous knowledge on some of the Indian Himalayan herbs and aromatic plants that might have high potential to be used as nutraceuticals.

This chapter summarizes the key insights derived from a three-dimensional perspective on EU–Turkey relations that combines the analytical lenses of (1) theories and concepts, (2) institutions, and (3) policies. It furthermore reflects upon the different periodizations of the EU–Turkey relationship. On this basis, we offer a systematic survey of the conditions under which cooperative trends in EU–Turkey relations could be (re)invigorated. The analysis shows that despite the high potential for reciprocity inside and outside the accession framework, the relationship currently rests on unfavorable conditions for cooperation on both sides. Important enablers of cooperative behavior—trust, communication, reputation, fairness, enforcement, and common identity—cannot properly operate in the current setup. The chapter puts forward possible means to allow for these enablers to facilitate cooperative behavior in EU–Turkey relations in the future. It concludes by discussing the future trajectory of the relationship and pinpointing avenues for a future research agenda for EU–Turkey studies.

This chapter develops the perspective of giftedness in France implemented at the National Center for Assistance to children and adolescents with High Potential (CNAHP). First, we present the debate about the terminology used to describe gifted children in France which varies according to the underlying theoretical conceptions and representations (e.g., gift, precocity, talent, or potential). The term high potential has been preferentially chosen given that it reflects both the cognitive capacities of children and adolescents (high intellectual and/or creative potential), and the fact that this potential can be expressed or inhibited by their difficulties (emotional, behavioral, and/or school problems).

Recent developments in concrete technology with high potential include ultra high performance concrete and self-compacting fibre reinforced concrete, which have a flowable consistency and can transport relatively high fibre dosages. Flowability is achieved by adopted mix design and both the mix design and flow affect the distribution and orientation of the fibres, which affect the post-cracking behaviour and accordingly the structural performance. With new materials also come new manufacturing and design approaches. The prediction of fibre orientation with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations can be an important instrument to predict, understand and influence fibre orientation. With better understanding the mix design and casting process can be optimized.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a set of theories and techniques implemented in order to achieve solutions capable of simulating intelligence. However, the quick progress in AI raises many questions regarding the benefits and risks of this technology, which can be used in many areas, drawing on advanced software and computers. The AI has also become more popular and especially used for modeling the complex behavior of most life solutions because it shows superior predictive power compared to traditional methods. This document presents the AI technology with a focus on strengths and weaknesses in its various applications to extract a list of the pros and cons of AI technology and reminds of some obstacles that can be faced during the completion of their projects. The contributions presented in this document reveal the high potential of AI methods as tools for predicting and optimizing different applications. In addition, challenges and directions for future research in the area of the use of AI techniques are presented and discussed.

Purpose: The purpose of the work is to determine and evaluate the main trends of development of technologies of AI in the national economy. Technologies of AI are used by a lot of countries in all spheres of public life; a lot of money is invested into research and development of new technologies; new normative documents and standards of implementation of IT into everyday life are adopted. Application of intellectual technologies changes the environment and transforms the traditional ideas of usual processes, but their implementation is still chaotic. The obtained results and effects of the work of AI are not systemic – however, they do influence the economic growth in certain spheres and corporations, which proves their high potential and hidden opportunities. That’s why the authors aim at solving the following tasks: performing an overview of the main achievements in the sphere of AI, evaluating the volumes of investments of various governments into scientific research on search for new intellectual solutions, providing examples of the most progressive intellectual technologies that are applied by various corporations around the world, considering the sub-complexes of AI, and systematizing the most perspective trends of development of AI for 10 years.

One of the advantages of transfer learning technique is its capability to learn new dataset using its finest pre-trained architecture. Other advantages of this technique are small dataset requirements along with faster learning process that could yield high accuracy results. Hence in this paper, anomalous gait detection or also known as forensic gait during housebreaking crime at the gate of residential units is discussed with transfer learning technique based on five popular pre-trained convolution neural networks (CNNs) as classifiers. High accuracy and sensitivity are achieved from remodeled of the pre-trained CNNs for the learning process, offline test, and real-time test. The accuracy attained from remodeled of the pre-trained CNNs have pledged high potential towards developing the forensic intelligent surveillance technique.

Carotenoids are one the most frequently coloured molecules encountered in our environment. Beside their colouring effect, carotenoids are famous for their photoprotection and antioxidant properties. Because carotenoids conserve their properties in vitro, the interest for these natural molecules increased. To satisfy the growing demand for carotenoids, new sources are searched and microalgae emerged as organisms with a very high potential. Using the most recent publications, we established that the production of carotenoids by microalgae is a tailor-made process requiring the proper biological and environmental factors. The optimization of the biotechnological processes aiming at producing carotenoids from microalgae requires a deeper knowledge in the regulation of the carotenoid biosynthetic pathways, that might be used to engineer microalgal strains.

Purpose: With the increased utilization of cross-sectional imaging, pancreatic cystic lesions (PCL) are common incidental findings, detected in up to 20% of abdominal MRI scans in adults. While PCL, especially mucinous PCL, have the capacity to develop into invasive carcinoma, it is increasingly being recognized that their malignant potential is neither uniform nor certain. Indeed, while data from long-term cohorts of PCL have identified a small but ongoing risk to the development of carcinoma, this must be balanced against the increasing data demonstrating low yield and high potential morbidity of surgical intervention in elderly patients with non-worrisome PCL. Furthermore, ongoing surveillance of PCL of little or no risk represents a large cost and strain on healthcare systems. Current guidelines that rely on clinical and imaging criteria to stratify risk of malignancy while sensitive, are highly non-specific. Given the morbidity and mortality associated with pancreatic resections, there remains an unmet need for molecular tools to stratify high-risk/malignant from low-risk lesions.

The evolving possibilities of molecular imaging (MI) are fundamentally changing the way we look at cancer, with imaging paradigms now shifting away from basic morphological measures toward the longitudinal assessment of functional, metabolic, cellular, and molecular information in vivo. Recent developments of imaging methodology and probe molecules utilizing the vast number of novel animal models of human cancers have enhanced our ability to non-invasively characterize neoplastic tissue and follow anticancer treatments. While preclinical molecular imaging offers a whole palette of excellent methodology to choose from, we will focus on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, since they provide excellent molecular imaging capabilities and bear high potential for clinical translation. Prerequisites and consequences of using animal models as surrogates of human cancers in preclinical molecular imaging are outlined. We present physical principles, values, and limitations of MRI as molecular imaging modality and comment on its high potential to non-invasively assess information on metabolism, hypoxia, angiogenesis, and cell trafficking in preclinical cancer research.

Nanobiotechnology introduces superior strides in diverse scientific and industrial disciplines. The green synthesis of nanomaterials possesses several advantages including low-cost, better reducing and stabilizing potential, near-zero contamination, as well as being an eco-friendly procedure. Biologically prepared nanomaterials expressed their high potential to be applied in numerous disciplines. Biomedical applications involved anticancer, antioxidant, anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, wound healing, antiparasitic, and antimicrobial potentials. Additionally, biologically synthesized nanomaterials have potential applications in the agricultural sector, food packaging industries, wastewater treatment, management of environmental noxious contaminants such as toxic dye effluents, organic pollutants, phenolic compounds, pathogenic microorganisms, etc. This chapter mainly focuses upon the potential applications of biologically fabricated nanomaterials in different sectors. The issues related to the current challenges, opportunities, safety, and toxicity aspects are also presented in order to develop the best commercialization for the biogenic nanomaterials.

In this research, a comprehensive literature review was conducted over the valorization, utilization, and circular economy of Zn–C batteries after their useful life. The status of this battery waste in Colombia a Latin America is also presented, as well as some case studies conducted in Medellin involving small business enterprises and research at the university level. Therefore, some characterization including scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction was included. Results show the high potential of this waste for using in construction materials, electronic materials, and formulations tailored for agriculture fertilizers.

The chapter is dedicated to the study of developmental features of the education system and university science in terms of innovation processes. We examine the prospects to change the basic principles of university performance and management within the development of a digital society, including ideological concepts to intensify innovation growth. It is noted that the main trends of education and science follow global ones, but their implementation is determined by the sociocultural features of the evolution of respective social institutions. The high potential and readiness of universities for innovation based on the principles of the digital economy are often hindered by the existing socioeconomic conditions and traditions of traditional management of education and science systems.

Non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques are increasingly applied in the clinic with a fast growing body of evidence regarding its value for clinical decision making. In contrast to biochemical or histological markers, the key advantages of imaging biomarkers are the non-invasive nature and the spatial and temporal resolution of these approaches. The following chapter focuses on clinical applications of novel MR biomarkers in humans with a strong focus on oncologic diseases. These include both clinically established biomarkers (part 1–4) and novel MRI techniques that recently demonstrated high potential for clinical utility (part 5–7).

This chapter presents a review of some industrial applications of light alloys and composites. While aluminum alloys and their composites play an important role in the development of aeronautical, aerospace, defense, and automotive industries owing to their improved mechanical properties and low weights, other lightweight materials such as Ti and Mg are being also successfully applied in these industrial sectors. The high-performance characteristics of a modern aeronautic industry are a direct consequence of the high-performance light materials, composites, and their manufacturing. The selection of the alloy type, with characteristics that will depend on the expected application, is a very important aspect from the point of view of its industrial implementation. A case study of the manufacture of thermal spray coatings, based on the use of light alloys with high potential for industrial-scale production, is here presented.

Impedimetric aptamer-based biosensors show high potential for handheld devices and point-of-care tests. In this review, we report on recent advances in aptamer-based impedimetric biosensors for applications in biotechnology. We detail on analytes relevant in medical and environmental biotechnology as well as food control, for which aptamer-based impedimetric biosensors were developed. The reviewed biosensors are examined for their performance, including sensitivity, selectivity, response time, and real sample validation. Additionally, the benefits and challenges of impedimetric aptasensors are summarized.

Due to increasing demands of the mass flow and transport lengths, the use of intermediate drives for continuous conveyors for both packaged and bulk materials is constantly growing. Intermediate drives allow the transmission of drive forces along the conveyor and thus lead to a reduction in the maximum belt tensile force. This paper presents a new drive concept for light conveyor belts. To reduce the belt tensile force, intermediate drives in form of linear direct drives are allocated along the transport distance. In the first part, a new belt design is presented which enables the implementation of the linear direct drive runner elements. The conveyer belt is characterized by low additional weights of the runner elements and has only a slightly higher bending stiffness compared to conventional conveyor belts, whereby small pulley diameters can be achieved. The second part explains the drive concept in the form of an Integrated Linear Flux Modulating Motor in more details. In particular, possible problems and the developed solutions, which were implemented and verified in a demonstrator, are presented. The results of the research show the high potential of the new drive technology.

In the broadest sense, this chapter deals with what most companies refer to as talent management, namely talent identification on the one hand and talent development and promotion on the other. In hierarchical companies striving for stability, both steps are more or less determined top down and based on previously defined competence requirements. In an agile context, talents bring themselves into play and independently go for instructive challenges. All this takes place in a supported and connected context. In addition and as a special key topic, this chapter deals with different types of expert careers.

In this work, an analysis of the principal characteristics, scientific aims and some initial results, of the Iberoamerican R&D network "Ditecrod" (Project of CYTED) is made. This network is based on an international agreement to propitiate an efficient trans-disciplinary cooperation in a scientific area where currently significant research efforts are being made for their high potential impact on future health and quality of life: The non-invasive Early medical diagnosis of Cardiovascular and Diabetic Foot diseases. Both chronic & degenerative pathologies are endemic today in many American countries. The main project objectives are the research, application and diffusion of new non-invasive diagnostic methods, having a low technologic cost and an easy portability, in relation to nowadays disposable approaches. The main results (in the first year of operation) of this multinational network are described. This project also seeks to promote the cooperation working among 11 working teams integrated in six R&D groups with large experience and previous innovations on the subject, and 2 emerging university groups until now focused mainly on the university teaching; in total 13 teams of 8 countries: 5 of Biomedical Engineering, 4 of Biophysics, 2 hospitals and 2 companies. Arctic offshore is considered to have high potential for new commercial discoveries of oil and natural gas. One of the most engaged countries in the offshore Arctic oil and natural gas resources development is Russia. However, due to the changing geopolitical and geoeconomic landscape Arctic offshore oil and natural resources development experience some challenges. The study focuses on evaluating Arctic offshore oil and natural gas resources development perspectives in Russia for a long-term period. This includes an algorithm and guidelines to identify the long-term strategic directions for the development these resources, and a scenario planning forecast of their development until 2050. The maximum annual projected production volumes of oil and natural gas combined from the offshore fields in the Russian Arctic compose approximately 1% of total production in Russia in 2016. Based on the obtained results, it is necessary to adjust the strategy for developing the offshore oil and natural gas resources in the Russian Arctic in accordance to the potential production volumes and changing macroeconomic situation.

Kazakhstan enjoys a relatively high potential in renewable energy sources of wind and solar, thanks to its favorable geographic conditions, vast surface area with high sun radiation, as well as windy conditions of the country. Following the independence of the country in 1991, Kazakhstan began diversifying its energy supply sources with an aim of harvesting its significant renewable energy potential. Several legislations have been adopted in terms of regulations of the renewable energy market and getting aligned with similar international practices.

Infrared thermography (IRT) is a non-destructive imaging technique that is used for revealing temperature differences on the surfaces of the human body or objects. Once it is used for biomedical purpose, it measures the emitted radiation on the surfaces of the human body. We, in this research, present Biomedical Infrared Thermography (B-IRT) applications with various measurement methods, analysis types, analysis schemes and study types from the existing literature in a detailed literature matrix. A mini-review of 30 studies from the literature are summarized through focusing on substantial features and backgrounds. Finally, recent advances and future opportunities are also presented to highlight high potential use of IRT in biomedical applications.

If blockchain technologies are emerging as important game changers in the supply chain, this is largely attributed to their high operational and strategic business value. While this high potential is acknowledged by the practitioner’s literature, very few empirical studies have been conducted on the factors explaining the adoption, use and continuance of blockchain-enabled supply chain applications. To fill this knowledge gap, this study extended the expectation-confirmation model (ECM) by integrating the supply chain stakeholders trust to analyze to the continuance intention in blockchain-enabled supply chain applications. The proposed model was tested and supported by the data collected among 344 supply chain professionals in India. The paper ends up with the formulation of important implications for practice and research.

Several real-world applications of Open image in new window made evident the need for efficiently handling multiple queries and reasoning tasks over large-sized knowledge bases. In this paper we present some recent enhancements in the ASP system Open image in new window for enabling reasoning over large-scale domains. In particular, we developed both an optimized implementation, sensibly reducing memory consumption, and a server-like behaviour to support efficiently multiple-query scenarios. The high potential of Open image in new window for large-scale reasoning is outlined by the results of an experiment on data-intensive benchmarks. The applicability of the system in real-world scenarios is demonstrated employing Open image in new window as reasoning service to query, in natural language, the large DBpedia knowledge base. The relevance and the high potential industrial value of this research is also confirmed by the direct interest of a major international industrial player, which has stimulated and partially supported this work.

It is mainly connected with historical development features of the financial market, where formation was related to circulation of precious metals. The world market still has high potential for growth that is especially relevant to Russia, which has high natural potential, advanced technologies for extraction and production of metals. It creates competitive advantage in the world market. The key players of this financial segment are commercial banks, which use resources of the precious metals market for diversification of its risks. It provides stability and sustainability of a bank segment. The purpose of the contribution is to study the process of formation of the precious metals market in Russia as a component of the global financial market and to identify problems, hindering its further development. The precious metals market in Russia is not completely formed and developed as there are some restrictions, which retard its development. The authors carried out the comparative analysis of gold and paper money as forms of cash equivalent of different historical eras. It allowed establishing the role of the precious metals market as a part of the financial market, which laid the basis for financial architectonics and provided financial market stability. The price fluctuations in the world precious metals market during 2000–2015 were analyzed, and the dependence of prices of various metals was defined. Based on these facts, the authors made a conclusion on the derivative character of asset prices of the precious metals market from gold prices. The key problems, hampering development of the precious metals market in Russia, were shown. The institutional imperfection of this financial segment is the most important.

For training robust deep neural architectures to generate complex samples across varied domains, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have shown promising performance in recent years. In previous works, the effectiveness of GANs in transforming images from the laseled source domain to the unlabeled target domain has shown high potential. In this paper, we outline a generalized semi-supervised learning framework where proposed ‘Semi-supervised Multi-category Classification with Generative Adversarial Networks (SMC-GAN)’ model, first, maps the data in the source domain to target domain to generate target-like source images and, then, learns to discriminate the target domain data using semi-supervised classifier. Extensive experimental evaluations on standard cross-domain datasets show that the proposed model is an efficient classifier and allows faster convergence than a conventional GAN approach for digit classification tasks.

There is international recognition of the high prevalence of depression and its associated disability. In countries where workers have been studied, major depressive disorders are the most prevalent chronic conditions in the prior year. Economic costs of depression include the costs related to screening, treatment, maintenance, and support of persons with depression. Costs also include those due to the effects of depression on absenteeism, presenteeism, and long-term disability costs. Workplaces offer high potential for preventing depression; recognizing early and advanced stages of depression; improving depression care off-site or on-site, in person or virtually; and improving outcomes of those efforts. Evidence-based programs for reducing depression costs exist. Innovations in technology and growing interest in financing novel programs for persons with depression offer promising outcomes clinically and economically.

The application of remote sensing and GIS technology has shown a great promise, over the years, and offered opportunities for improving identification of areas that are likely to be locations of lineament and mapping. Based on the ability to identify geological features, Landsat ETM-7 satellite data images were used and band-5 was found as the most suitable for lineament delineation. Parameters such as drainage patterns, previously mapped faults, lineaments, and lithological contact layers were used in this study, to produce a fault potential prediction map using the overlay model technique. The generated fault density map classifies the study area into 5 potential zones, thus, very low, low, moderate, high, and very high potential zones. 33 faults, which may represent new faults in the area of investigation were obtained from the correlation between fault segments and faults data collected from field work. NW–SE is the general orientation of the fractures and N100-1100E was the major trend obtained from fault analyses. Poly-phase ductile-brittle structures such as shear zone and faults in the study area were confirmed by our findings. Iron mineralization in the area is controlled by those structures since they form pathways for mineralizing fluids.

Phycoremediation as a green technology relies on microalgae which have high potential to grow in greywater. The presence of high levels of nutrients is necessary for microalgae growth to improve the efficiency of this process. However, the main consideration of the phycoremediation process of greywater lies in the wastewater composition, the selection of microalgae strains with high potential to compete with the indigenous organisms in the greywater and remove nutrients and elements from greywater as well as microalgae, which possess the ability to survive under stressful environmental conditions. Besides, this process can be applied to individual houses. The cost of the phycoremediation process, source of microalgae and energy required are the main points which need to be discussed further. The study indicated that the phycoremediation process is most effective for the treatment of greywater. However, many aspects have to be evaluated in order to achieve the high-quality-treated greywater. In this chapter, the effectiveness of phycoremediation and the mechanism of nutrient removal are discussed. Most microalgae species exhibited greater efficiency in removing nitrogen compared to phosphorous due to the nature of the anabolic pathway of microalgae cells and the ability of nitrogen compounds to diffuse through the cell membrane faster than phosphorous compounds.

In this paper, we present a study on the use of serious games in the assessment and rehabilitation of children with Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI). Moving objects support vision and processing the information conveyed in children with CVI; they also find it easier to deal with more simple images. Our serious games help them keeping focused on the exercise by using touch interface, the game paradigm and cartoon characters. The paper reports lesson learned from data collected in a user study to highlight the high potential of using these games also in the rehabilitation process, which brings us to develop the games also in a mobile platform to allow children train the skill at home, i.e., more intensively and in a familiar environment.

MIM-technique possesses high potential for the SF6 free near net shape mass production of small sized and complex shaped parts. Furthermore, MIM involves a high degree of freedom regarding individual alloy- and MMC-composition using the blended elemental (BE-route). Resent research has highlighted MIM of Mg-alloys as highly suitable for biomedical applications like screws, nails and bone-plates, as well as for commercial 3C applications. For prototyping and low quantities, the feedstock can be used for 3D-filament print, too. Hence, demonstrator parts and test specimen could be produced very successfully, ready for industrial upscaling. Increased mechanical properties of MIM dogbone tensile test specimen could be achieved using Mg-2.6Nd-1.3Gd-0.5Zr-0.3Zn alloy (EZK400, UTS: 164 MPa, YS: 123 MPa, \( \upvarepsilon_{\text{f}} \): 3.4%) and AZ81-alloy for commercial applications (UTS: 240 MPa, YS: 118 MPa, \( \upvarepsilon_{\text{f}} \): 4%). Thus, the mechanical properties are currently equivalent to those of as cast material and obtaining high development potential.

The main assumption underlying this article is that aesthetic categories and spatial practices are intrinsically connected. I argue that aesthetic experience and aesthetic judgment assume an importance for their high potential to activate the agency of urban actors. Any study of the evolution of urban space in Switzerland should account for the high importance assigned by different urban actors to aesthetic questions. As “small” actors engage in a production of their “aesthetics of existence” (term coined by Foucault in Polit Philos Cult Interviews Writ 1984:47–53, 1977), their actions play the fundamental role in the structuring of urban space. The aesthetic sensibilities in Switzerland have been developing in the particular spatial, social and historical conditions with the city image in a pivotal role.

Traffic data, automatically collected en masse every day, can be mined to discover information or patterns to support police investigations. Leveraging on domain expertise, in this paper we show how unsupervised clustering techniques can be used to infer trending behaviors for road-users and thus classify both routes and vehicles. We describe a tool devised and implemented upon openly-available scientific libraries and we present a new set of experiments involving three years worth data. Our classification results show robustness to noise and have high potential for detecting anomalies possibly connected to criminal activity.

Today’s Web pages more frequently contain structured information by means of semantically-rich embedded data. These data are currently used by search engines to provide an improved semantic, structured search result. However, very often these data are conflicting when present on different Web pages. Data consumers do not receive any support in handling (recognizing, interpreting, correcting) structured data. The more frequent structured data will be available on the Web, the more critical is the problem in recognizing and handling conflicting structured data. This paper presents FactCheck as an approach for the detection and resolution of conflicting structured data on the Web. We applied our solution to websites and APIs using JSON-LD and Microdata. First experiments with a prototypical implementation of FactCheck show that the resolution of conflicting data has high potential to significantly improve the quality of information on the Web. First evaluation reveals positive effects through the additional information indicators provided by FactCheck and indicates an impact on users of FactCheck at various levels. The resulting improvement of the data quality on websites will be of benefit to all data consumers who are depending on data on the Web as well as cognitive computing services and its building blocks.

We present our video search system for the Video Browser Showdown (VBS) 2018 competition. It is based on the collaborative system used in 2017, which already performed well but also revealed high potential for improvement. Hence, based on our experience we introduce several major improvements, particularly (1) a strong optimization of similarity search, (2) various improvements for concept-based search, (3) a new flexible video inspector view, and (4) extended collaboration features, as well as numerous minor adjustments and enhancements, mainly concerning the user interface and means of user interaction. Moreover, we present a spectator view that visualizes the current activity of the team members to the audience to make the competition more attractive.

In a discussion of the stationary SEq, a major problem is that there are only very few realistic potentials for which closed solutions exist. To make analytical statements, one therefore almost always has to introduce approximations or simplifying assumptions; apart from that, one depends on numerical results. This also applies to the one-dimensional case to which we restrict ourselves here. In this chapter, we simplify typical potentials by replacing them with ‘steps’, i.e. by piecewise constant potentials; see Fig. 15.1. As long as we do not assume that there are infinitely high potential walls at an arbitrary distance, we will also have to deal with continuous spectra.

We study humanity’s attitude towards violence by looking at the plots of 110 epics in Wikipedia. Starting with Gilgamesh dated 2100 BC, and ending with Games of Thrones firmly anchored in the twenty-first century we analyze the plot section of each epic described in Wikipedia, using different automatic sentiment analysis tools such as LIWC and IBM Watson ToneAnalyzer and AlchemyLanguage to calculate average sentiment. We find an increase in positive sentiment over the centuries, confirming Steven Pinker’s theory of a reduction in overall violence despite a still high potential for conflicts in today’s globalized interconnected fast changing world; indicating growing societal resilience towards violence. We also find more positive emotion in Asian and African epics.

Developing a successful drug from the discovery phase to its successful entry into the market costs an average of $3 billion dollars and 10–15 years. The continual goal of biopharma industry is to develop safer and more effective drugs. Therefore, performing in vitro and in vivo safety and efficacy studies is crucial in order to select the high potential drugs in preclinical phases and continue its development. Safety of a novel therapeutic agent must be rigorously analyzed and proven to prevent development of side effect in clinical testing. Thus, in vivo studies under GLP conditions and following FDA guidelines must be performed to advance towards IND approval. The utilization of several animal models is also required in order to test the efficacy of the compound. Efficacy studies offer the capacity to further dissect the mechanism of action of the novel compound and demonstrate its translational potential to humans.
