Abstract

This chapter continues my treatment of the relationship between the idea of modernity and the form of sociological argument, a relationship that arises with the very emergence of sociology as I argued in the previous chapter. With the development of this paradigmatic concern with modernity, the future was no longer seen as being about the reproduction of the present, but was considered to be a space for the further development of projects and trends (Burke 1992). These trends and projects were to be the trends and projects of modernity itself where modernity could also be understood, in Habermas’s (1996) words, as an unfinished project — one that was not yet realized, but could be used as a normative framework to address global processes. The ‘unfinished project’ in general terms, however, is the bringing to fruition of what is already predicated in the Western experience. Ideas of evolution and progress are central to the concern with the future and, for most writers, as I have argued, the history of the West is seen as a precursor of the future of the non-West. In this chapter, I will address theories of modernization and the recent idea of multiple modernities, which is argued by its proponents to escape the Eurocentrism that is finally allowed to be a characteristic of modernization theory.

42. Introduction: Historiographic Traditions, Grid-Plan Cultures and Africa

Abstract

In Western (Eurocentric) research traditions of urban and planning histories, sub-Saharan Africa is generally denied an urban past, an urban settlement-design culture, and especially an indigenous practice of grid-planning. It is against this state of research that indigenous grid-pattern settlements in Senegal are analyzed in this book. The book demonstrates that urban grid-planning emerged independently in Senegal, before European colonization, while also shifting the discussion from morphological essentialism regarding the genealogy of the grid towards a more interactive, poly-centric and processual approach of “entangled histories.” This introductory chapter brings to the fore the sensitivities inherited in African Studies as developed against the background of the historiographic tendencies that characterize Islamic Studies, World History, (Global) Urban Studies and the current literature on grid planning. The chapter provides a critical overview of the assumptions about Africa in the various scholarly disciplines directly related to the book, giving special attention to global North-South perspectives. Through a focus on grid plan literature, the chapter calls for the enduring need to de-Eurocentralize global urban history. Proceeding towards a more inclusive, integrative and polycentric urban history would contribute to the “worldling” of grid plan legacies. The book’s rationale and structure are also presented here, including its methodological approach and a note on sources of data and cartographic analysis.

They recommend moving away from traditional intercultural communication education based on national cultures, which simplify and fixate individuals. As alternatives the authors propose to reconsider the position of culture in interculturality in education and to implement polycentrism in the way the notion is conceptualised.

44. African Foreign Policy Thought and Classical Political Doctrines: The Commonality of Ethical and Axiological Grounds

Abstract

Afrocentrism which emerged as a response to Eurocentrism challenged several political theories of the twentieth century which are used to define the problem field of international studies. This phenomenon as well as the West–East opposition that emerged in European countries many years ago gave birth to a whole trend in the sphere of human knowledge which intentionally opposed the original African foreign policy thought to classical ideas. Using the method of axiological reductionism based on Husserlian eποχη principle and Quine's ontological relativism the authors explore the ethical features of the original African foreign policy concepts. Having established that the ethical component of African political thought has no fundamental differences from similar components of other regions of the world, the authors show the axiological commonality of African and world theories and introduce into accepted typological classifications them through axiological reductionism. As a result, the authors conclude that, despite the prominent specificity of the concepts themselves (for example, racial—negritude, afrocentric—concentric ring system, regional—Pan-Africanism, state—Ujamaa) and the foreign policy doctrines (African Renaissance) and phenomena (OAU, AU) generated by them, African political thought not only does not fall out of the global mainstream of political studies but also complements it as one of the significant components of global political development.

Helping students to treat interculturality as a never-ending process is put forward as a major objective in this chapter. So are the goals of moving beyond Eurocentrism and observing ideological and political stances. Finally, centring approaches around multiple dialogues within educational contexts (teachers-students, students-students, inward looking) is necessary to boost students’ criticality and reflexivity and help them examine situations of interculturality.

Abstract

In this chapter, the authors trace the epistemic challenge initiated by colonialism as part of its civilizing and modernizing missions, and the epistemological violence that undermined Africa’s knowledge systems. The chapter argues that the anticolonial and decolonization efforts have been more programmatic without pushing the boundary of decolonizing the epistemic basis of colonialism. The chapter then contends that decolonizing resistance can best be captured in the form of a reversed epistemic process that not only excavates Africa’s knowledge forms, Africanizes other available knowledges, but more importantly generates an epistemological framework that establishes and reinforces a combative alternative Afrocentric mythology that subverts the existing Eurocentric mythology. Such an alternative myth constitutes a new vision of the African continent and all it can achieve outside of the grip of Eurocentric epistemic hegemony.

Abstract

We argue that it is important to acknowledge that river restoration (both in theory and practice) still remains largely located within the realm of the hegemonic Western knowledge systems. In this chapter we challenge the Eurocentrism of dominant ecological restoration projects by documenting the different framing and approaches to restoration being employed by Māori (the Indigenous of Aotearoa New Zealand). We focus our attention on the collective efforts of one tribal group (Ngāti Maniapoto) who are working to decolonise how their ancestral river is managed and restored through the use of Indigenous Knowledge, augmented by Western scientific techniques. A key focus is on restoration that is underpinned by the principle of kaitiakitanga (environmental guardianship) and devoted to healing fractured relationships between humans and more-than-humans.

Abstract

The growing realisation in the global North that capitalism and the conditions of the Anthropocene no longer create the conditions for life represents a profound unsettling of the philosophical foundations underpinning ideas about modernity and progress. However, for millions of people around the world this is nothing new, since colonized peoples have experienced this reality since the advent of capitalism. The dominant presentation of the Anthropocene ignores the role of systems, such as colonialism, capitalism and patriarchy and erases the racialised history of extractive colonialism that has given rise to this form of globalism. In response, this chapter discusses the significance of decolonizing the Anthropocene and the challenges this poses, in particular, for postcolonial theory. It discusses the ways in which postcolonial theory problematizes the Eurocentrism of and the epistemic violence created by framing the Anthropocene as a universalizing and silencing concept.

This chapter approaches black performances and black artists performing in Contemporary Brazil, discussing aesthetics and training of black artists through an examination of the work of the theatre companies Bando de Teatro Olodum (Bahia) and AMOK Teatro (Rio de Janeiro), and the performers and playwrights Grace Passo (Minas Gerais) and Lazaro Ramos (Bahia). Starting from the historical legacy of black artists and groups who proposed the positive affirmation of black image in the Brazilian scene, such as Abdias Nascimento’s Teatro Experimental Negro—TEN (Rio de Janeiro), Leite and Matsumoto investigate intersections between aesthetics and politics in relation to representations of blackness and the challenges of black artists in the diaspora. The inventive paths these have promoted to resist racism and shake the canons of Eurocentrism are explored to reveal ways to resignify representations of black people image and empower black artists on the theatrical scene of contemporary Brazil.

Abstract

This chapter explores how comparative international law can provide a means through which to problematise the discourse of universality in international law by viewing the interplay of distinct legal cultures in the making and operation of international law as a dynamic of transformative translation. Broadly defined as identifying, analysing and explaining local, regional or national approaches to international law, comparative international law assumes a fluidity in both the normative structure and material substance of international law given the diverse cultures among states. It is a project that re-imagines the field of international law as a plural space accompanied by continual and ongoing processes of translation and adaptation between different normative orders through which the substance and structures of international law are made and re-made.
