Abstract

This open access volume reveals the hidden power of the script we read in and how it shapes and drives our minds, ways of thinking, and cultures. Expanding on the Linguistic Relativity Hypothesis (i.e., the idea that language affects the way we think), this volume proposes the “Script Relativity Hypothesis” (i.e., the idea that the script in which we read affects the way we think) by offering a unique perspective on the effect of script (alphabets, morphosyllabaries, or multi-scripts) on our attention, perception, and problem-solving. Once we become literate, fundamental changes occur in our brain circuitry to accommodate the new demand for resources. The powerful effects of literacy have been demonstrated by research on literate versus illiterate individuals, as well as cross-scriptal transfer, indicating that literate brain networks function differently, depending on the script being read. This book identifies the locus of differences between the Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans, and between the East and the West, as the neural underpinnings of literacy. To support the “Script Relativity Hypothesis”, it reviews a vast corpus of empirical studies, including anthropological accounts of human civilization, social psychology, cognitive psychology, neuropsychology, applied linguistics, second language studies, and cross-cultural communication. It also discusses the impact of reading from screens in the digital age, as well as the impact of bi-script or multi-script use, which is a growing trend around the globe. Abstract

Today’s studies of networked discussions may be divided into theory-driven and data-driven, but both lines of research neglect the role of contextual knowledge in assessment of real-world public discourse. As scholars note, without context, data lose meaning and value; however, there is a striking vacuum of scholarly discussion on how to delineate the relevant context for network discussion studies, as well as what procedures of its description in academic publications should be employed. As a mediator between theories and data-driven results, context has a potential of eliminating the opposition between theory- and data-driven research designs. In an attempt to conceptualize context, we suggest to adapt the long-term experience of cognitive linguistics and critical discourse analysis for developing rigorous procedures of selection, assessment, and explicit description of relevant context(s). We bring attention to the paradox that, in online discussion studies, scholars extract sociologically relevant conclusions from the data of non-sociological nature (that is, either text or network structures), and argue it might be fruitful for selection of appropriate contextual background. After meta-reviewing the conceptual papers on online discussion research and using our own experience in such studies of over 7 years, we suggest three types of contexts for network discussions: cognitive, platform-technological, and media/communicative contexts – that need to be taken into account in network discussion studies.

Fictive motion, i.e., the figurative stative use of verbs of motion, has attracted much attention in cognitive linguistics as a paradigm case for how basic dynamic concepts are exploited figuratively in concept formation (Langacker 1986; Matsumoto 1996; Talmy 2000; Matlock 2004a, b inter alia). In this paper, we present a case study of the fictive motion reading of the German movement verb steigen ‘climb, rise’ and explore how it can be related to the various dynamic readings of the verb. In our account of steigen, which builds on Gamerschlag, Geuder & Petersen’s (2014) analysis of the dynamic readings of the verb, we contrast the different readings in terms of frames, i.e., recursive attribute-value structures in the sense of Barsalou (1992) and Petersen (2007/2015).

Abstract

In this work, we propose a formal, computational model of the sense-making of diagrams by using the theories of image schemas and conceptual blending, stemming from cognitive linguistics. We illustrate our model here for the case of a Hasse diagram, using typed first-order logic to formalise the image schemas and to represent the geometry of a diagram. The latter additionally requires the use of some qualitative spatial reasoning formalisms. We show that, by blending image schemas with the geometrical configuration of a diagram, we can formally describe the way our cognition structures the understanding of, and the reasoning with, diagrams. In addition to a theoretical interest for diagrammatic reasoning, we also briefly discuss the cognitive underpinnings of good practice in diagram design, which are important for fields such as human-computer interaction and data visualization.

At present, more attention is being paid by linguists to a subjective aspect of the language, to how a person understands and interprets the reality. Grammar and syntax appear to be the most underdeveloped in cognitive linguistics. Yet, grammatical constructions can be widely used and contribute to a more complete and adequate description of the surrounding reality. This article makes an attempt to look into constructions with simple and continuous infinitives after predicates of seemingness from the point of view of an observer and with regard to a type of perception (full or partial). When analyzing the texts from the British National Corpus, a conclusion was made that the continuous infinitive can be frequently used after predicates ‘seem’ and ‘appear’. Based on the word definitions and categories of seemingness and perception, predicates of seemingness are recognized as predicates of perception. So, there can be some relation between predicates of seemingness and different types of perception – full and partial. An infinitive construction after predicates ‘seem’ and ‘appear’ can be developed into a subordinate clause, hence there is some evidence that the continuous infinitive’s semantics can coordinate conventionally with the semantics of the finite verb’s continuous aspect form, while, correspondingly, the simple infinitive’s semantics – with the semantics of the simple aspect form. The finite verb’s continuous and simple aspect forms can be used by the speaker in different situations of perception, which evidently results in choosing a construction either with a simple or continuous infinitive after predicates ‘seem’ and ‘appear’.

Briefly introduced was the term ‘image schema,’ described as mental generalisations learned from the body’s sensorimotor experiences. As a creolized variety of Melanesian Pidgin English spoken in Papua New Guinea, Tok Pisin has a simplified grammar and a reduced lexicon. In spite of it, the conceptual processes that it employs are as varied and complex as in English—its lexifier and one of the major Western languages. Section 1 briefly introduces the symbolic nature of language. Section 2 describes the basic properties of pidgin and creole languages. Section 3 provides an overview of the insofar analyses of figurative patterns in contact languages. Section 4 presents in detail the methodological framework of the analysis, which is based on the theory of conceptual metaphor (Lakoff in Metaphor and thought. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, pp 202–251, 1993; Lakoff & Johnson in Metaphors we live by. University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1980), theory of conceptual metonymy (Radden & Kovecses in Metonymy in language and thought. John Benjamins, Amsterdam, pp. 17–59, 1999), and forms of metaphor-metonymy interaction jointly called ‘metaphtonymy’ (Goossens in Cognitive Linguistics 1(3), pp. 323–340, 1990).
