The spotted seatrout, Cynoscion nebulosus, is a popular game fish in the southeastern USA. It is estimated that nearly 90% of the adult population in South Carolina estuaries are infected in their skeletal muscle by the myxosporean, Kudoa inornata. However, little is known about this parasite's biology, including the distribution and densities of myxospores within tissues of infected fish, which we expect affect the physiology of their hosts. In order to correlate densities with physiological parameters in future studies, we quantified the myxospores density in muscle and characterized the variation among individual fish. Naïve juvenile seatrout was experimentally infected via presumed K. inornata actinospores exposure to raw seawater. A plug of muscle was extracted from two bilaterally symmetrical regions in the epaxial fillet from fresh and frozen carcasses. Variation in density data was calculated both within and among individuals. Within individuals, density counts were compared between left- and right-side biopsies. There was no significant difference between fresh and frozen plugs, and variation among individuals accounted for the greatest proportion of variation at 68.8%, while variation within individuals was substantial at 25.6%. Simulation and correlation tests confirmed that bilaterally symmetrical replicates varied significantly within individuals. When sampled from areas surrounding the initial biopsies, myxospore density estimates were more similar than between sides. Rastrelliger brachysoma (Bleeker, 1851), the short mackerel, is a dietary staple and of significant economic demand in Southeast Asia and Thailand. However, the demand for short mackerel has precipitated an overfishing crisis, leading to a depletion of fish stocks. Overfishing, coupled with parasitism, may result in a decline in the population of R. brachysoma. Digenetic trematode infection is prevalent in marine fish and has a considerable impact on the overall health of the fish. Here, to identify digenetic trematodes infecting R. brachysoma, we aim to determine the identity, prevalence, and intensity of digenean infections in R. brachysoma from the Gulf of Thailand. A total of 194 short mackerel were obtained from Chon Buri Province, where digeneans were isolated and identified. The molecular identity of the digeneans was confirmed using the nuclear 28S rRNA gene. Of the 194 short mackerel, 100% were found to be infected with digeneans, comprising of Lecithocladium, Prodistomum, Opechona, and Aphanurus. Lecithocladium was the most prevalent (98%) and had the highest intensity of infection (37 mean intensity), followed by Prodistomum (75% prevalence and 17 mean intensity). Our study thus presents the first evidence of digeneans infecting the economically important short mackerel from the Gulf of Thailand. The high infection rate of digenetic trematodes may have implications on the health of R. brachysoma, further driving their population decline. These data underscore the importance of safeguarding fisheries resources in the Gulf of Thailand, and downstream conservation efforts are crucial for evidence-based management decisions to safeguard the long-term sustainability of fish resources., (© 2024. The Almaco jack (Seriola rivoliana) is a marine fish maintained in mariculture systems and frequently infested by monogenean parasites like Neobenedenia sp. Severe infestations can lead to high mortalities and economic losses for farmers. This study evaluated the effects of temperature on the immune response on Almaco jack infested with Neobenedenia sp. We exposed infested fishes at temperatures of 20 °C, 24 °C, and 30 °C for 20 days and took samples of different tissues at the beginning of the experiment, and after 3 and 20 days. The tissues considered were the skin, thymus, cephalic kidney, and spleen to evaluate the relative gene expression of different genes: Hsp70, IgM, IL-1β, IL-10, and MyD88. Our results showed an increase in IL-1β gene expression in the skin after 20 days of infestation but no significant effect of temperature on gene expression, despite increases in infestation rates with temperature. Therefore, relative genetic expression was controlled by the number of parasites and the days post-infestation. The elucidation of life-cycles of digeneans, with their successive larval stages, is facilitated by the use of molecular markers. Samples of sporocysts containing cercariae and metacercariae belonging to Monorchis Monticelli, 1893 were collected from naturally infected bivalves, Cerastoderma glaucum (Bruguière, 1789), and adult forms of Monorchis spp. were collected from sparid fishes of the genus Diplodus. All specimens were collected in the Gulf of Gabès, southern Tunisia. The identities of the examined molluscs and fishes were determined via molecular barcoding of their COI gene. Sequences of COI and ITS1 genes were also obtained for both larval and adult stages of collected parasite specimens. Genetic sequence data generated for the collected larval specimens only differed minimally from the sequence data of adults identified as Monorchis parvus; we attribute the difference to intraspecific variation. The morpho-anatomical study showed that the different stages of M. parvus collected from the Tunisian coasts had the same morphology as those reported in European waters with a lag in maturity and lower measurements. The current conservation status of Percichthys trucha (Creole perch) is Least Concern, although the population trend is considered to be decreasing. We conducted an extensive survey of parasite fauna in this species over two decades in its distribution range in Argentina. Fish were collected using gill and trawl nets. Parasites were collected, identified, and counted to calculate prevalence and mean intensity. The present work reports the parasite species infecting P. trucha, using data from our own survey and from previously published records. This information enables us to evaluate infection and distribution patterns, assess the role of P. trucha as host, determine the specificity of the parasites, and evaluate the threat represented by introduced, invasive parasites. The data set consists of a total of 453 host-parasite-locality records, of which only 15 are exclusively bibliographic. We found 44 parasite taxa: 19 digeneans, 4 monogeneans, 5 cestodes, 8 nematodes, 4 acanthocephalans, 3 crustaceans, and 1 mollusk. The most represented families were Diplostomidae, Heterophyidae, and Dactylogyridae. This study increases the number of parasite species known from 25 to 44. It can be concluded that this parasite fauna is characterized by high diversity, particularly of digeneans, and most of the parasites reproduce within this host, a pattern which is related to the top position of this fish species in the trophic webs. Six parasite species (Allocreadium patagonicum, Homalometron papilliferum, Acanthostomoides apophalliformis, Duplaccessorius andinus, Pseudodelphys limnicola, and Hysterothylacium patagonense) exhibit high host specificity (only matures in Creole perches) and are widely distributed, which could now be considered as "biogeographical core helminth fauna." Some P. trucha populations are affected by the invasion of alien fishes like Cyprinus carpio and pathogenic parasites like Lernaea cyprinacea and Schizocotyle acheilognathi. Patterns of the rockcod Notothenia coriiceps infection with helminths were analysed to understand the dynamics of parasite communities in this Antarctic fish and to test their stability over time. The study was performed using helminth samples collected from 183 N. coriiceps in 2014-2015 and 2020-2021 in the vicinity of the Ukrainian Antarctic station (UAS) "Akademik Vernadsky", Galindez Island, Argentine Islands, West Antarctica. Overall, 25 helminth taxonomical categories (nine trematodes, four cestodes, five nematodes, and seven acanthocephalans) were subjected to analysis. A direct comparison of the helminth population characteristics showed that nine species significantly changed their infection parameters during the 6 years between the samples. Seven of them (Pseudoterranova sp., Contracaecum sp., Ascarophis nototheniae, monolocular metacestodes, bilocular metacestodes, Metacanthocephalus rennicki, and Diphyllobothrium sp.) were found to have a significant impact on the differences between helminth infracommunities in 2014-2015 and 2020-2021. Most studied patterns of helminth component community appeared to show a stable tendency, and observed fluctuations were close to the steady trend. Encystment is crucial for defense and reproduction in Cryptocaryon irritans. Therefore, understanding the encystment-related events in the protomont stage can help prevent and control C. irritans. Autophagy promotes protozoan parasite encystation. However, 3MA can inhibit autophagy. In this study, the effects of autophagy inhibition on encystation, survival rate, ultrastructural features, and metabolomic profiles of C. irritans, were evaluated using protomonts treated with 3MA (20 mM). The treatment with 3MA for about 4 h significantly lowered survival and encystation rates of protomonts to about 86.44% and 76.08%, respectively. Microstructural observations showed that the 3MA-treated protomonts showed deformed cell membranes and the cytoplasmic content spill. Furthermore, observation of the ultrastructure of 3MA-treated protomonts showed the destruction of organelles (Golgi bodies and mucocyst) and a lack of autophagosomes. However, no abnormality was observed in the control experiments. Furthermore, the metabolic analysis revealed suppression of metabolites, such as lipids, amino acids, and carbohydrates. These results demonstrate that 3MA can inhibit autophagy in C. irritans, thus hindering encystation, suppressing the metabolism of metabolites, and altering morphological ultrastructure in these parasites., (© 2022. The present paper reports the site of attachment preference, overlapping and partitioning of niche among different life stages of parasitic isopod Cymothoa indica Schiöedte and Meinert, 1884 in the Gobiidae fish Glossogobius giuris (Hamilton 1822) collected from the Chilika lagoon, India. Out of 2113 host fishes, 176 were found to be infected by the parasites. Out of the 233 different life stages of the parasites examined, 89 were female, 104 were male, and the rests were juveniles. 100% of the females, 84.6% of the male and 72.5% of the juveniles were found to be attached to the buccal cavity, while the rest of the males and juveniles were attached to the branchial cavity. In most cases, there was niche overlapping, leading to competition for the resources. Females preferred more specialized niches as compared to males and juveniles. In a few instances, there is niche partitioning, as shown by the male and juveniles. There is a negative correlation between the number of parasites found in the body of the fishes and the weight of the host fishes. Studying the genetic diversity of nematode parasite populations is crucial to gaining insight into parasite infection dynamics and informing parasite phylogeography. Anisakiasis is a zoonotic disease caused by the consumption of infectious third-stage larvae (L3) of Anisakis spp. carried by marine fish. In the present study, a total of 206 mitochondrial DNA sequences (cytochrome c oxidase 2, cox2) were used to study the genetic diversity, genetic structure, and historical demography of twelve A. pegreffii populations from Trichiurus japonicas along the coast of mainland China and Taiwan. Two distinct evolutionary lineages of A. pegreffii and no significant genealogical structures corresponding to sampling localities suggested that isolation in the marginal seas shaped their patterns of phylogeographic distribution along the coast of mainland China and Taiwan during glaciation with lower sea levels. Furthermore, pairwise F ST values and AMOVA did not indicate any significant genetic differentiation among groups with no relation to the geographic area, which might be attributed to fewer barriers to gene flow as well as large population sizes. The results of the neutrality test, mismatch distribution, and Bayesian skyline plot analyses showed that entire population underwent population expansion during the late Pleistocene. Analysis of the demographic history revealed that A. pegreffii underwent historical lineage diversification and admixture due to secondary contact based on ABC analysis. Variable platyfish, Xiphophorus variatus (Meek, 1904) (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) and eastern mosquitofish, Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859 (Poeciliidae) from earthen ponds in west central Florida were examined for parasitic infections. At necropsy, we observed myriad nematodes (adults and eggs), which we identified as Huffmanela cf. huffmani, infecting the swim bladder, gonad, and visceral peritoneum. Nucleotide sequences (small subunit ribosomal DNA, 18S) of H. cf. huffmani from variable platyfish and eastern mosquitofish were identical; likewise for newly obtained 18S sequences of Huffmanela huffmani Moravec, 1987 from the swim bladder of red breast sunfish, Lepomis auritus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Centrarchiformes: Centrarchidae) and warmouth, Lepomis gulosus (Cuvier, 1829) from the San Marcos River (type locality for Huffmanela huffmani Moravec, 1987), Texas. The sequences of H. huffmani and H. cf. huffmani differed by 7 (1%) nucleotides. Pathological changes comprised proliferation of the tunica externa of the swim bladder in low-intensity infections in addition to inflammation, proliferation, and tissue necrosis of swim bladder, peritoneum, and gonad in high-intensity infections. The lesion was severe, affecting the cellular constituents of the swim bladder wall and reducing the size of the swim bladder lumen; potentially reducing swim bladder physiological efficiency. The present study is the first record of a freshwater species of Huffmanela Moravec, 1987 from beyond the San Marcos River, first record of a species of Huffmanela from a livebearer, first nucleotide sequences and phylogenetic analysis for Huffmanela, and first evidence that an infection by a species of Huffmanela causes pathological changes that could impact organ function., (© 2022. The Levant Basin is in many ways the world's most invaded marine ecosystem owing to the existence of the man-made Suez Canal. The invasion of free-living organisms through this pathway is increasingly documented and monitored in the past two decades, and their ecological impact recognized. Nonetheless, while tremendous scientific effort is invested in documenting introduced fishes, co-introduction events of these fishes and their parasites have drawn relatively little interest. In our research, we examined the presence of gill parasites (Monogenea) on the invasive narrow barred Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus commerson which has been known in the Mediterranean Sea for 80 years. The gills of S. commerson supported numerous, relatively large monogeneans (Monogenea: Gastrocotylinea), reaching prevalence levels of 100% with a mean intensity of ~ 80 worms per host. Using an integrated molecular and morphological approach, four gastrocotylinean species were identified: Gotocotyla acanthura, Cathucotyle cathuaui, Pricea multae, and Pseudothoracocotyla ovalis. Two species, C. cathuaui and P. ovalis, are reported here for the first time from the Mediterranean. Sequences of the 28S rRNA gene of G. acanthura from native hosts, Pomatomus saltatrix and Trachinotus ovatus, differed from individuals collected from S. commerson by 1.8%. We therefore suggest that the taxonomic status and distribution of G. acanthura should be revisited, and we recommend an integrated approach as essential to accurately detect co-introductions., (© 2022. Sphaeromyxa azevedoi n. sp. is described from the gall bladder of the goby Gobioides grahamae (Gobiidae) captured on the Paracauari River in Salvaterra, on Marajó Island, northern Brazil. A total of 50 G. grahamae specimens were analysed, and 15 (30%) were parasitised by the plasmodia and myxospore of Sphaeromyxa azevedoi n. sp. Large plasmodia were observed floating in the bile. These plasmodia were flat, rounded, oval or elongated, and of varying sizes. The mature myxospores, found singly or in pairs, were 27.1 ± 2.7 (20.5-30.1) μm Length and 3.8 ± 0.2 (3.5-4.4) μm Width in the valvular view. The myxospore has two polar capsules of equal size, 8.1 ± 0.6 (7.4-9.4) μm in length and 2.9 ± 0.2 (2.3-3.3) μm in width. A polar tubule was observed in each capsule, arranged perpendicularly to the principal axis, with three or four coils. The histological analysis showed that the plasmodia and myxospore are located in the lumen of the gall bladder, arranged in pairs, and the epithelium of the gall bladder presented multifocal necrosis. The SSU rDNA of Sphaeromyxa azevedoi n. sp. clusters in the 'balbianii' group of the Sphaeromyxa clade. The morphological characteristics and molecular phylogeny of Sphaeromyxa azevedoi n. sp. support its classification as a new species of the genus Sphaeromyxa, which represents an important advancement in the understanding of the diversity of the myxozoan parasite fauna of Brazilian fishes, especially considering that the new species may be detrimental to the host, a commercially important Brazilian fish species., (© 2022. Infection of non-indigenous pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus, Centrarchidae) with the bothriocephalidean cestode Bothriocephalus claviceps (Cestoda: Bothriocephalidae) was confirmed at several sites in the lower Oder river basin in Poland. The preferred host for this cestode species is the European eel (Anguilla anguilla), with a wide range of other fish species serving as paratenic hosts. The pumpkinseed showed a relatively high prevalence and abundance of larvae, along with several mature and gravid specimens, thereby confirming development of B. claviceps to the adult stage in an alternative host. As such, the pumpkinseed may represent an additional definitive host for this cestode, in addition to its role as a paratenic host, as previously recorded in other European regions. Our results indicate that inclusion of pumpkinseed as an additional definitive host in the cestode's life cycle, high infection of pumpkinseed with B. claviceps larvae and inclusion of pumpkinseed in the eel's diet could potentially lead to increased parasite pressure on native fish hosts. A new species of Ceratomyxa infecting the gallbladder of the marine ornamental fish Acanthurus xanthopterus collected from the Vizhinjam coast of Kerala is described. The parasite exhibited a prevalence of 100%. Mature spores recovered from the gallbladder were slightly crescentic with rounded lateral extremities and possessed convex anterior and slightly concave to straight posterior margins. Spore valves two, equal, joined by a straight and prominent suture. Myxospores measured 5.5 ± 0.6 μm in length and 15.9 ± 2.3 μm in thickness. Polar capsules two, equal, spherical, positioned anteriorly on either sides of the suture, 2.3 ± 0.2 μm long and 2.2 ± 0.2 μm wide. Polar filament with four to five coils, 21.2 ± 0.6 μm when extruded. Posterior angle 173.6 ± 5.2°. Early sporogonic stages and monosporic, disporic, and multisporic plasmodial stages were spherical to irregular in shape, with or without filopodia. Histopathologic analysis revealed that spores and developing stages were attached to the gallbladder wall as well as found free in the lumen. Morphologic and morphometric comparison of the present parasite with known species of Ceratomyxa indicated significant differences. In molecular and phylogenetic analyses, the present myxosporean revealed high divergence with related forms and occupied an independent position within the Ceratomyxa clade with high nodal support. Considering the morphological, morphometric, molecular, and phylogenetic dissimilarities with the previously described species of Ceratomyxa and the differences in host and geographic locations, the present species of myxosporean is treated as new and is named Ceratomyxa xanthopteri n. sp.

Many Pauciconfibula spp. have a long and complicated taxonomic history. The remaining unsolved taxonomic confusion in this genus is impelled by the host range and status of Pauciconfibula spp. from trachinid fishes: Pauciconfibula trachini and Pauciconfibula draconis, from Trachinus radiatus and Trachinus draco (Trachinidae), respectively. Pauciconfibula trachini was reported on Trachinus draco, type host of Pauciconfibula draconis suggesting thus a stenoxenic specificity for the former monogenean and the occurrence of two congeneric polyopisthocotyleans on a single host. Moreover, the validity of Pauciconfibula draconis was repeatedly questioned by several authors, unjustified synonymy between the two species was proposed, and the delimitations between the two species remained unsolved. Original descriptions were also incomplete and poorly illustrated. In this study, we provide a detailed illustrated redescription of both species based on newly collected specimens of Pauciconfibula trachini and Pauciconfibula draconis collected from their type hosts from off three Mediterranean localities: Algeria, Tunisia, and Italy. Integrative taxonomy using COI sequences was applied to resolve the delimitation between Pauciconfibula trachini and P. draconis. This study provides the first DNA barcoding for members of this genus.

A new trematode species, Derogenes lacustris Tsuchida, Flores, Viozzi, Rauque et Urabe n. sp. (Derogenidae: Derogeninae), from freshwater fishes is described using morphological and molecular approaches in Argentinean Patagonia. D. lacustris is the most common hemiuroidean species in the Limay River basin and parasitizes almost all the native and introduced Patagonian freshwater fish. This new species could be considered as the unique freshwater species in the genus Derogenes Nicoll, 1910. Another hemiuroidean species, Thometrema patagonica Szidat (Archiev Hydrobiol 51: 542-577, 1956) Lunaschi et Drago 2000 (Derogenidae: Halipeginae), is found from Percichthys trucha (Perciformes) in the Neuquén River basin. Its diagnosis and molecular data are provided by the present study. In the molecular analysis of the Patagonian hemiuroideans, T. patagonica composes a group with halipeginean species in the phylogenetic tree of 28S rDNA sequences, while D. lacustris is not included in the same group. D. lacustris also shows low intraspecific variation in COI sequences regardless of the localities or host species.

A novel myxozoan parasite is identified and described from mudskipper, Boleophthalmus dussumieri, collected from a brackishwater ecosystem in Maharashtra, India. Ellipsomyxa boleophthalmi sp. nov. was found in the gallbladder of 58 of 60 fish examined (96.7%). The parasite formed disporous plasmodia that varied in size and shape, and the thin-walled, ellipsoidal and elongated myxospores measured 9.0-10.7 × 6.0-7.8 μm. The two, spherical polar capsules measured 2.7 μm in diameter and enclosed 3-4 coils of polar tubules. Histological observations of infected gallbladder revealed the attachment of disporous plasmodial stages of the parasite to the gallbladder wall with fine pseudopodia. Under the scanning electron microscope (SEM), the myxospores showed a distinct central sutural line and two distinct depressions on the opposite sides at the openings of polar capsules. SEM also revealed the engulfment of microvilli of gallbladder wall by pseudopodia of the plasmodial stages. Analysis of the partial fragment of the SSU rDNA region (1386 bp) showed less than 98% sequence similarity with the other reported Ellipsomyxa spp. In the phylogenetic tree, the present species formed as a distinct subclade within the major clade of Ellipsomyxa spp. The unique morphological and morphometric features of the myxospore, together with the molecular analysis, allowed us to conclude that the present myxozoan is a new species and is named Ellipsomyxa boleophthalmi sp. nov., after the generic name of the host. This is the first report on the occurrence of the genus Ellipsomyxa in B. dussumieri.

This study aimed to determine the integrative characterisation of nematodes from three species of edible flathead fishes (Scorpaeniformes: Platycephalidae) in New South Wales, Australia, and describe nematode communities within three species of flatheads. Tiger (Platycephalus richardsoni (Castelnau); n = 20) and sand flatheads (Platycephalus bassensis (Cuvier); n = 20), sourced from the Nelson Bay area, and dusky flathead (Platycephalus fuscus (Cuvier); n = 20) from the Manning River, Taree, were examined for the presence of nematodes. The nematodes were initially classified morphologically as 12 different morphotypes belonging to the families Anisakidae (Anisakis types I, II, and III, Contracaecum type II, Terranova types I and II), Raphidascarididae (Hysterothylacium types IV, VI, VIII, and H. zhoushanense larva), and Gnathostomatidae (Echinocephalus sp. larva), Capillariidae (Capillaria sp.), followed by genetic identification through sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS-1, 5.8S, ITS-2) regions. Phylogenetic analyses revealed the evolutionary relationship between the identified larval specimens in the present study with available GenBank larval and adult nematodes. Sand flathead was 90% infected with nematodes followed by tiger flathead at 85% and dusky flathead at 15%. Nematodes infecting estuarine dusky and oceanic sand and tiger flatheads contrasted markedly. The analysis of similarities (ANOSIM) showed significant differences (p < 0.001) in the composition of taxa within nematode communities between the three species of flatheads (global R = 0.208) with the highest difference being between sand and dusky flatheads (R = 0.308, p < 0.001). The findings of the present study provide a foundation for future investigations of the community composition, life cycles, and distribution of nematode populations in edible fish in Australia and explore and clarify their significance to public health.

This study aimed to investigate the links between parasites and behavioural traits of juvenile Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii). The Murray cod is an endangered Australian freshwater fish for which restocking programs are in place and there is a growing human consumption market. However, little is known about the parasites of these fish and how these parasites influence their behaviour and survival. Fingerlings and yearling fish were sourced from a hatchery and the wild, and after acclimatisation in the laboratory, variation in behavioural traits was examined using emergence, exploration and predator inspection tests. The fish were then euthanised to determine their age and examined for infection with parasites. Wild fish had more camallanid nematodes and lernaeid copepods than hatchery fish. An information theoretic approach using Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC) indicated that infection with protozoan cysts was an important factor for predicting the latency to emerge and explore a new environment, which was interpreted as reduced "boldness". In contrast, the presence of lernaeid copepods was included in two of the four best models predicting predator inspection, indicating that infected fish were less likely to inspect a predator. Source of fish (wild or hatchery) was found to be a strong influence on behavioural responses in all our tests. All parasites found in the present study are known to result in clinical signs of diseases in their fish hosts, raising the possibility that responses in tests of behavioural traits reflect side effects of infection. Additionally, the effect of host adaptation to not show signs of parasite infection, or more simply that the effects on behaviour are subtle and difficult to reveal with small sample sizes, is discussed. Nonetheless, we propose that it is important that infection with parasites is considered in fish behavioural studies both to assess survival behaviour and to avoid misinterpretation of behavioural tests of animal personality.

Two myxosporean species of the genus Sphaeromyxa were isolated from the gallbladders of marine fish in the South China Sea. Sphaeromyxa scorpaena n. sp. was collected from Scorpaenodes albaiensis Evermann and Seale, 1907. The mature myxospores were arcuate-shaped with tapered to pointed ends, and a length of 14.1 ± 0.7 (13.8-15.1) μm and a width of 5.2 ± 0.3 (4.9-5.8) μm. The polar capsules (PCs) were pyriform with a length of 3.2 ± 0.2 (3.1-3.5) μm and a width of 1.6 ± 0.1 (1.4-1.8) μm, and containing ribbon-like polar filaments irregularly folded 1.5-2.5 turns. Molecular characteristics and phylogenetic analysis based on 18S rDNA as well as morphological comparison confirmed that S. scorpaena n. sp. was a previously undescribed species. Sphaeromyxa theraponi, isolated from Terapon jarbua Forsskål, 1775, was reported for the first time from the South China Sea. The mature myxospores were slightly arched, tapering to bluntly rounded ends, with a length of 17.3 ± 0.9 (15.5-19.4) μm and a width of 4.8 ± 0.3 (4.1-5.3) μm. A sporoplasm was situated in the space between PCs in the myxospore. The PCs were pyriform, which contained ribbon-like polar filaments irregularly folded by 2-3 turns, with a length of 7.0 ± 0.5 (5.8-8.1) μm and a width of 2.6 ± 0.2 (2.2-3.0) μm. Our morphological and phylogenetic analyses suggest that the pointed ends of S. scorpaena n. sp. might be a secondarily acquired characteristic rather than an ancestral trait.

The composition and diversity of parasite communities are useful tools to characterise ecosystem health and integrity. Environmental disturbances may affect parasite infection in fish directly, by their effects on the free-living stages, or indirectly, on the intermediate hosts. Slimy sculpins, Cottus cognatus, a small fish inhabiting cold waters of North America, have been considered as sentinels due to their limited mobility, often occupying relatively small areas throughout their lives and thus reflecting the local environment. Ninety-six specimens of C. cognatus were sampled from four tributaries of the Athabasca River to assess patterns of helminth parasite community structure in this fish and to study the composition and diversity of its parasite communities in relation to water quality. The localities included single samples from High Hills, Horse and Dunkirk rivers, and two from the Steepbank River. Twelve metazoan parasite species were found, most of them being larval forms. Significant differences occurred in the structure and composition of parasite assemblages of sculpins from the tributaries, although similarities were observed in connected and nearby sites. Parasite communities were influenced mainly by a combination of local environmental conditions, distance and connectivity, and were separated based on the distribution and abundance of autogenic and allogenic parasites. Water quality appeared to influence the distribution of trematode species that use gastropods as intermediate hosts, while proximity and connectivity of sites led to sharing allogenic parasite species in slimy sculpin.

The third-stage larvae (L3) of the Anisakidae family are parasitic nematodes with zoonotic impact and are frequently encountered in the organs and musculature of various fish intended for human consumption. Since Anisakis simplex (s.s.) and A. pegreffii are the major aetiological agents of human disease, this study aims to combine the morphological and molecular data on the recovered anisakid larvae to contribute to a simplified morphological distinction of those species and conducted a survey of anisakid larvae infection in horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus). Here, 116 horse mackerel caught in Portuguese waters were analysed for the presence of L3 of anisakids, and 3148 larvae were collected, of which only 30% were retrieved during visual inspection. As such, visual inspection does not appear to be very effective in anisakid detection. A prevalence of 84.5% of infected fish was found, and the mean intensity and mean abundance were 32.1 and 27.1 parasites per fish, respectively. The morphological and molecular analyses of 196 L3 randomly chosen from the total sample of parasites demonstrated the presence of L3 of mostly Anisakis spp., with only one L3 of Hysterothylacium aduncum. Relative frequencies of 62.9% for A. pegreffii and 37.1% for A. simplex (s.s.) were obtained. The morphometry differences between these two sibling species were evaluated, and the results demonstrated significant differences between the length of the ventriculus and the length of the oesophagus. Precisely, A. simplex (s.s.) has a longer oesophagus and ventriculus than A. pegreffii. As such, these differences may be used to distinguish the two species through morphological analysis.

The specimens of Trachinus draco collected from the Bay of Bizerte were found to be infected with a new Ceratomyxa species described as Ceratomyxa draconis n. sp. The sequence of small subunit ribosomal RNA gene obtained in this study differs from other Ceratomyxa sequences available in GenBank. Mature spores of this species were elongated and crescent-shaped in sutural view, measuring 7.4 ± 0.77 (6.4-8.0) μm in thickness and 30.8 ± 1.65 (28.8-32.8) μm in width. The polar capsules were spherical, equal in size, and measuring 3.3 ± 0.2 (3.6-4.0) μm in diameter. The Ceratomyxa draconis n. sp. showed a clearly seasonal variation of prevalence with highest prevalence noted during summer months.

Members of the genus Sphaeromyxa Thélohan, 1892 have been reported from a wide variety of fish species worldwide. In the present study, specimens of rusty blenny, Parablennius sanguinolentus, collected from Sinop on the Turkish Black Sea coast were investigated for myxosporean parasites by using both conventional and molecular methods. Sphaeromyxa sevastopoli Naidenova 1970 was the only myxosporean parasite found in the gall bladder of host fishes. The morphology peculiarities of obtained S. sevastopoli spores are in good agreement with those of original description and the morphometric data overlapped in spore length and width but differed in polar capsule length and width; however, they were within the ranges previously reported from 18 host fish species. Moreover, in the present study, molecular analysis of the 18S rDNA gene of S. sevastopoli isolate in our P. sanguinolentus as well as isolates from shore rockling Gaidropsarus mediterraneus and knout goby Mesogobius batrachocephalus which were previously morphologically identified and reported by Okkay and Özer (Acta Zool Bulg 72(1):123-130, 2020) was done for the first time and our three S. sevastopoli genotypes were allocated to the "balbianii" group which is characterized by straight or slightly curved and fusiform or ovoid spores with ovoid polar capsules.

Coccidian parasites of fish have received considerably less attention than their terrestrial counterparts, and within piscine hosts, most studies have focused on freshwater fish. The present study aimed to describe oocyst morphology, phylogenetic affinities, and the impacts of coccidian parasites infecting the internal organs of a commercially valuable marine fish, the blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou), captured off the Portuguese coast. As part of the phylogenetic analysis, sequences from coccidians infecting the pout (Trisopterus luscus) and the Atlantic chub mackerel (Scomber colias) were included, and the oocyst morphology of the coccidians infecting the former was also reported. Results showed that the prevalence of coccidiosis in the blue whiting was very high (> 82%), occurring in all analyzed organs, despite being more abundant in the liver. A significant negative correlation was found between the abundance of the parasites in the liver and host condition index (p < 0.05), which indicates a negative effect on the fitness of this host. Phylogenetic analyses of the parasites found in all three species examined identified three different species of Goussia, closely related to Goussia clupearum. Adding to previous research, we propose the existence of a fourth group of Goussia, the clupearum type, able to infect multiple organs and phylogenetic related with G. clupearum.

Among several marine pelagic species of the Brazilian coast, Scomber colias Gmelin, 1789 (Perciformes: Scombridae) stands out for having great economic importance, since it is widely used as a food resource and presents moderate vulnerability. Twenty specimens of S. colias were purchased from October 2015 to October 2016 from the coast of Santa Catarina, Brazil. In the present study, we recorded Hysterothylacium fabri (Rudolphi, 1819) (Deardorff and Overstreet, Proc Biol Soc Wash 93(4):1035-1079 1980) from the S. colias intestine using an integrative taxonomy approach, where morphological data are used in combination with partial sequences of the ITS gene, to validate the taxonomic status of the species and establish their relationships with other members of the genus. This species is being recorded for the first time in the South Atlantic and S. colias. The specimens of H. fabri collected in this study parasitizing S. colias presented morphology similar to the other specimens already registered parasitizing other hosts. The distance matrix generated showed that the partial sequences obtained in this study were more similar to sequences of Hysterothylacium sp. collected in China. In phylogenetic analysis, the two detected haplotypes of this study were grouped with H. fabri haplotypes deposited in GenBank in a monophyletic subclade.

A new parasite species, Kudoa yasai n. sp. (Multivalvulida), is described from the king weakfish (Macrodon ancylodon), which is an important commercial fishery resource on the Brazilian Amazon coast. A total of 190 M. ancylodon specimens were obtained from the central fish market of the town of Bragança, and pseudocysts were found in the skeletal muscle fiber samples of all (100%) of the specimens, although no inflammatory reaction was observed in any of the cases. The myxospores are quadrate in shape with four polar capsules of equal size, 6.9 ± 0.94 μm long, 8.2 ± 0.39 μm wide, and 5.5 ± 0.60 μm thick. The polar capsules are 1.8 ± 0.26 μm in length and 1.4 ± 0.18 μm in width. The morphological and morphometric parameters, together with the phylogenetic analysis of a partial sequence of the 18S (SSU rDNA) gene, all indicate conclusively that Kudoa yasai n. sp. is a new species, distinct from all other Kudoa species. The study also verified the loss of quality in the meat of the host fish (M. ancylodon) sold in the Bragança market, which reinforces the need for the more systematic control of the quality of the product and the prevention of possible health problems for the consumer.

Interest and use of the lumpfish Cyclopterus lumpus L., 1758, as a cleaner fish in salmon aquaculture has grown significantly over the past 10 years. This has resulted in an explosion of new hatcheries to supply juveniles to the salmon industry. Until recently, these hatcheries have utilized a significant amount of wild broodstock to source the eggs required. Importation of wild fish into aquaculture systems brings an inherent risk of introducing pathogens into the culture systems. Gyrodactylus cyclopteri Scyborskaja, 1948, was found on local wild collected lumpfish that were brought in to start a captive lumpfish aquaculture program in Maine. Little information on the identification or description of G. cyclopteri was available. A re-description of the parasite, supplemented with molecular data, was undertaken to facilitate future identification and support research on this parasite of an emerging, economically significant new aquaculture species.

A prerequisite for a parasitic manipulation to be considered adaptive is that it confers a fitness benefit to the parasite, such as increased transmission to another host. These manipulations can involve alterations to a wide range of host phenotypic traits, including microhabitat choice. Eye flukes of the trematode family Diplostomidae use fish as intermediate hosts and must be transmitted by predation to a piscivorous bird. In New Zealand, the diplostomid Tylodelphys darbyi infects the eyes of a widespread endemic freshwater fish, the common bully Gobiomorphus cotidianus. Within the eye, T. darbyi metacercariae achieve large sizes and move freely about the aqueous and vitreous humors of the eye. We hypothesized that higher intensities of T. darbyi would (i) cause bullies to show increased activity and spend more time moving about in open space (i.e., more conspicuous, risky microhabitat) and (ii) reduce their ability to compete for shelter with fish harboring lower infection levels. Our experiments showed that heavily infected fish were more active and spent more time in the open, although the effect was age-dependent, with immature fish displaying decreases in activity and time spent in the open with increasing intensities of infection. We also demonstrated that heavily infected female bullies have a lower probability of using shelter, but males show the opposite pattern. It is possible that using more risky microhabitats increases the likelihood of the fish being eaten by the parasite's predatory avian definitive hosts. However, our findings indicate that age- and sex-dependent effects call for a more nuanced interpretation.

Examination of 35 barramundi (Lates calcarifer) from aquaculture cages in Setiu Wetland, Malaysia, revealed a single fish infected with three Henneguya spp. (Cnidaria: Myxosporea). Characterization of the infections using tissue tropism, myxospore morphology and morphometry and 18S rDNA sequencing supported description of three new species: Henneguya setiuensis n. sp., Henneguya voronini n. sp. and H. calcarifer n. sp. Myxospores of all three species had typical Henneguya morphology, with two polar capsules in the plane of the suture, an oval spore body, smooth valve cell surfaces, and two caudal appendages. Spores were morphometrically similar, and many dimensions overlapped, but H. voronini n. sp. had shorter caudal appendages compared with H. calcarifer n. sp. and H. setiuensis n. sp. Gross tissue tropism distinguished the muscle parasite H. calcarifer n. sp. from gill parasites H. setiuensis n. sp. and H. voronini n. sp.; and these latter two species were further separable by fine-scale location of developing plasmodia, which were intra-lamellar for H. setiuensis n. sp. and basal to the filaments for H. voronini n. sp. small subunit ribosomal DNA sequences distinguished all three species: the two gill species H. setiuensis n. sp. and H voronini n. sp. were only 88% similar (over 1708 bp), whereas the muscle species H. calcarifer n. sp. was most similar to H. voronini n. sp. (98% over 1696 bp). None of the three novel species was more than 90% similar to any known myxosporean sequence in GenBank. Low infection prevalence of these myxosporeans and lack of obvious tissue pathology from developing plasmodia suggested none of these parasites are currently a problem for barramundi culture in Setiu Wetland; however additional surveys of fish, particularly at different times of the year, would be informative for better risk assessment.

Seriola rivoliana cultivated in Mexico are infected by Neobenedenia sp. (Monogenea: Capsalidae), resulting in dermal ulceration and subsequent bacterial invasion that can cause fish death. This study assesses the effects of temperature over hatching success, oncomiracidia longevity, and infection success. The experimental design consisted of culturing the parasite at temperatures ranging between 16 and 32 °C. The oncomiracidia infection success, time to sexual maturity, and size at sexual maturity of Neobenedenia sp. were examined only at three temperatures (20 °C, 24 °C, and 30 °C). Experiments were conducted under controlled conditions in the laboratory. The oncomiracidia development was found to be faster at warmer temperatures (4-5 days between 24 and 30 °C) than in colder treatments (7-11 days between 18 and 20 °C). Hatching success and oncomiracidia longevity were higher at 24 °C and 26 °C. At 20 °C, 24 °C, and 30 °C, infection success was greater than 90%. Additionally, the laid eggs were observed at 9, 12, and 15 days at 30 °C, 24 °C, and 30 °C, respectively. The results of this study will allow for improving the temporal schedule of applications of treatments against Neobenedenia sp. by the function of temperatures. In conclusion, it is recommended to treat fish more frequently if the temperature in cultures is higher than 24 °C, because Neobenedenia sp. development is faster. As an alternative, the fish could be moved to deeper and cooler waters.

Invasive species are a major threat to ecosystems worldwide. Their effects are versatile and mostly well studied. However, not much is known about the impact of invasion on native parasite communities, although parasites are usually important response variables for ecosystem health. To improve the knowledge on how native fish parasite communities and their dynamics are affected by invasive species and how these processes change local host-parasite interactions over time, we studied different host-parasite systems in four German rivers. Three of these rivers (Rhine, Ems, and Elbe) are heavily invaded by different Ponto-Caspian species such as the amphipod Dikerogammarus villosus and various gobiids such as Neogobius melanostomus and Ponticola kessleri that serve as potential hosts for different local parasite species, while the fourth river (Schwentine) was free of any Ponto-Caspian invaders. Due to the lack of additional uninvaded river systems, literature data on parasite communities before invasion were compared with the post invasion status for the rivers Rhine and Elbe. The results showed differences among the parasite communities of different host species from the three invaded rivers when compared to the Schwentine River. Among the local internal parasite communities, especially the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis and the nematode Raphidascaris acus have to be considered as key species associated with invasions from the Ponto-Caspian region. As the examined invasive Ponto-Caspian fish species serves as suitable host for both parasite species, the increases in their infection rates in native fish species are examples of parasite spill back (R. acus) and spill over (P. laevis, at least in the river Rhine). These results were further supported by the analysis of literature data on parasite communities of the past 20 years. Consequences for local parasite communities range from decreased prevalence of native parasites towards an extinction of entire parasite species.

Kudoid myxozoans have been reported causing serious chronic problems in marine fisheries, by reducing the market value of infected fish through pathological damage to the host musculature. We report here the overall prevalence of a Kudoa species in 84/277 (30.3%) fishes from 20 different species of high commercial value captured between October 2011 and December 2013 from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) 34 commercial fishing area, near the coast of the Canary Islands (Spain). Macroscopic examination showed myxozoan-like cysts in skeletal muscle from 5 of the 20 fish species examined, with the following prevalences: Pagellus acarne (86.7%), Pagellus erythrinus (46.5%), Serranus cabrilla (27.8%), Spondyliosoma cantharus (19.4%), and Sarpa salpa (28.6%). Infection intensity was determined based on spore counts following muscle tissue digestion. Morphometric studies to characterize the species and DNA sequence analysis results suggest that these infections are attributable to a Kudoa species closely related to Kudoa trachuri. This paper reports the first study on a multivalvulidan species to be identified from the Canary Islands. Furthermore, this is the first report of Kudoa parasites in all of the hosts mentioned above, with the exception of P. acarne.

The monogenean Microcotyle erythrini is atypical because it has been recorded from several fish host species in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, in contrast to many species which are considered strictly specific. This could indicate a true lack of specificity or that several cryptic species are involved. This paper is a partial attempt to solve this problem. Specimens of a monogenean resembling M. erythrini were collected from bogues, Boops boops, caught off Algeria. A comparison with published descriptions and with museum specimens of M. erythrini did not yield any clear morphological difference. However, sequences of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) differed by 16.3% from that of M. erythrini (from GenBank, material collected from the type-host Pagellus erythrinus), indicating that the species was different. The species from B. boops is therefore described here as Microcotyle isyebi n. sp. and differential diagnoses with Microcotyle species from the Mediterranean and from sparids are provided. These results suggest that a molecular re-evaluation of other M. erythrini-like specimens from various fish hosts could reveal the existence of additional parasite biodiversity.

A new coelozoic myxozoan species, Ceratomyxa batam n. sp., was identified in cultured carangid fish, Trachinotus ovatus (Perciformes: Carangidae), in waters off Batam Island of Indonesia. The bi- and trivalved spores were observed in the gallbladder of T. ovatus. Mature bivalved spores of C. batam n. sp. were transversely elongated and narrowly crescent in shape, 3.8 ± 0.36 (2.7-4.6) μm long and 19.2 ± 1.75 (16.2-22.0) μm thick. Two sub-spherical polar capsules were 2.3 ± 0.18 (2.0-2.8) μm long and 2.6 ± 0.16 (2.3-2.9) μm wide. Prevalence was 72.2% in 72 examined T. ovatus according to evaluations dating from November 2016. The maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree based on small subunit rDNA sequence showed similarity with Ceratomyxa robertsthomsoni and Ceratomyxa thalassomae found in Australia. This is the first report of Ceratomyxa species identified in a seawater fish at Batam Island, Indonesia.

To date, 26 Kudoa spp. (Myxozoa: Myxosporea: Multivalvulida) have been recorded in edible marine fishes in Japan. In the future, it is likely that even more marine fish multivalvulid myxosporeans will be characterized morphologically and genetically, which will aid the precise understanding of their biodiversity and biology. We examined 60 individuals of six fish species collected from the Philippine Sea off Kochi or from the border between the Philippine Sea and East China Sea around Miyako Island, Okinawa, i.e., the southern part of Japan. Newly collected parasite species included Kudoa yasunagai from the brain of Japanese meagre (Argyrosomus japonicus) and Japanese parrotfish (Calotomus japonicus), Kudoa miyakoensis n. sp. and Kudoa thalassomi from the brain and trunk muscle, respectively, of bluespine unicornfish (Naso unicornis), and Kudoa igami from the trunk muscle of Carolines parrotfish (Calotomus carolinus), African coris (Coris gaimard), and Pastel ringwrasse (Hologymnosus doliatus). With the exception of Japanese parrotfish for K. yasunagai, all these fish are new host records for each kudoid species. Notable variation in the number of shell valves (SV) and polar capsules (PC) was observed for all four kudoid species. In particular, spores with seven or eight SV/PC were prominent in K. igami isolates, despite the original Japanese parrotfish-derived description characterizing it as having spores with six, or less commonly five, SV/PC. However, molecular genetic characterization based on the ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) and mitochondrial DNA (cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 and ribosomal RNA small and large subunits) found no significant differences in the nucleotide sequences of isolates with different phenotypical features as far as examined in the present study. A newly erected species, K. miyakoensis n. sp., was determined to be phylogenetically closest to brain-parasitizing species, such as K. chaetodoni, K. lemniscati, and K. yasunagai based on rDNA nucleotide sequences, but differed from them morphologically.

The parasitic copepod Neoergasilus japonicus (Harada, 1930) (Ergasilidae), native to east Asia, is widely distributed in Asia, Europe, and North and Central America. Recently, this species appeared in lentic water bodies of the River Dyje floodplain (Danube basin, Czech Republic). It was first recorded in 2015 and in 2 years it reached a 100% prevalence in recently expanding non-native fish host, Lepomis gibbosus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Centrarchidae, native to North America) at two borrow pits. Abundance of N. japonicus increased with fish length, with maximum intensity of infection reaching 99 parasites per fish. The parasite was most frequently found attached to the dorsal and anal fins of fish, while preference for the dorsal fin was more evident with lower infection intensities. Utilization of expanding fish hosts in water bodies that are regularly interconnected via natural or managed flooding may support the rapid dispersal of this non-native parasite.

Cryptocaryon irritans is a ciliated protozoan parasite infecting the gills and skin of almost all marine teleosts, resulting in severe disease. Notably, C. irritans is unable to cause significant pathogenesis in rabbitfish, Siganus oramin, a well-known less susceptible host. However, little is known about the development of C. irritans in rabbitfish. Thus, in the present study, rabbitfish were artificially infected with C. irritans at a 1/2 maximal tolerance dose (MTD), using the susceptible host, large yellow croaker, Larimichthys crocea, as a control. The daily food consumption (DFC), survival, and relative infection intensity (RII) of the fish were observed, and the relative number of tomonts (RNT), reproductive rate, and characteristics of C. irritans tomonts were measured. The lethal concentration 50 (LC50) of C. irritans on rabbitfish and large yellow croaker was 2236, and 264 theronts/g fish, respectively. The DFC of rabbitfish decreased by 14.6% at day 1 post-C. irritans infection (PI), but immediately returned to normal DFC levels by day 2 PI, and was not affected by secondary infection. However, large yellow croaker stopped feeding at day 3 PI, and all fish died following secondary infection with C. irritans. The RII of rabbitfish exhibited a significant downward trend at 6 h PI, and the reproductive rate of C. irritans was 8%; in contrast, the RII of large yellow croaker was not significantly different from 0 to 72 h PI, and the reproductive rate of C. irritans reached to 59.05-fold. Over the same time frame, the diameter of tomonts from rabbitfish was smaller compared with those from large yellow croaker. These results indicated that the rabbitfish were somehow able to limit the development of C. irritans, such that most trophonts left the host during early developmental stages, whereas those that survive could only develop into small tomonts.

A new species of caligid copepod, Caligus mulli n. sp., is described based on specimens collected from surmullet Mullus surmuletus Linnaeus from Atlantic waters off the Azores, Portugal, and from red mullet Mullus barbatus barbatus (Linnaeus) caught in the Mediterranean Sea, off the south-eastern coast of Turkey. Sixteen specimens (both sexes) were collected from the gill cavity of M. surmuletus, and one female was collected from the gill cavity of M. barbatus barbatus. The new species is described from both fish hosts. Detailed comparisons are presented with two closely related species, C. ocyurus Cressey, 1991 and C. biaculeatus Brian, 1914: the former can be distinguished by differences in shape of the dorsal cephalothoracic shield and postantennal process, while the latter differs in relative size of the distal spines on leg 4 and in the shape of the sternal furca. The new species can easily be distinguished from its congeners by a combination of the following additional characteristics: (1) the corpus of the female maxilliped bears a prominent projection proximally and the myxal area is ornamented with a hyaline flange and two sensillae, and (2) the male maxilliped has a conical proximal projection on the corpus and a bifid myxal process opposing the claw.

Hamaticolax juanji n. sp. is described from specimens collected from the blackbelly rosefish Helicolenus dactylopterus Delaroche 1809 (Scorpaeniformes: Sebastidae). It is the second Hamaticolax species described and reported from the Mediterranean Sea, after Ha. resupinus Pérez-i-García, Carrassón and Boxshall, 2017. It is distinguished from Ha. resupinus by the presence of only one dorsal naked seta on the third segment of the antennule (vs. four), two unequal short naked setae in distal part of the antenna (vs. four), and the absence of a minute spine on the third endopodal segment of leg 1, among others. It is differentiated from Ha. prolixus Cressey 1969 by a comparatively reduced fourth pedigerous somite, the presence of two naked setae on the third segment of the antennule (vs. three), two naked setae and three curved claws in the distal part of the apical segment of the antenna (vs. three and four), an outer naked seta on the basis of leg 2, and by larger length/width ratio of the third endopodal segment, among others. Hamaticolax juanji n. sp. also has relatively longer inner setae on the first and second endopodal segments of leg 4 than the two former species. Patterns of host-use and host-specificity of the genus Hamaticolax are also discussed. The frequently observed low host-specificity of its members may be better explained by host ecological similarity and host availability phenomena, rather than by host phylogenetic distance.

Cultured Nibea albiflora rarely die from cryptocaryoniasis. To explore the resistance of N. albiflora against the invasion of Cryptocaryon irritans, in this study, 40 g N. albiflora was artificially infected with C. irritans at a median lethal concentration (2050 theronts/g fish). The food intake, survival, relative infection intensity, and immobilization titer variation of serum and mucus at different time points after the infection were compared. Results showed that the ingestion of N. albiflora could be resumed only 1 day after feed deprivation by the disease, which indicated the quick resilience of N. albiflora. N. albiflora did not die out even if it was cultured continually for up to 15 days at 27 °C in a culture tank with a large quantity of C. irritans tomonts. It was because that, without any exterior force, N. albiflora could block the C. irritans cell proliferation, and then the pathogens disappear gradually. In vitro immobilization titer test results confirmed that the serum and mucus could directly eradicate C. irritans.

Ceratomyxa gouletti n. sp. is a new parasite described from the gallbladder of the red scorpionfish Scorpaena scrofa (Scorpaeniformes: Scorpaenidae) collected from La Goulette in the Northeast of Tunisia. The parasite develops disporic plasmodia, elliptical to ovoid in shape, measuring up to 33.1 ± 3.6 (28.0-38.2) μm in length and 12.5 ± 2.1 (11.3-14.0) μm in width. Mature spores are elongated transversely and crescent-shaped with rounded ends and unequal shell valves, measuring 8.1 ± 1.27 (7.2-9.0) μm in length and 32.0 ± 2.5 (27.0-38.2) μm in thickness. Sutural line is straight and visible between valves. Polar capsules are subspherical with 3.15 ± 0.63 (2.7-3.6) μm long and 1.9 ± 0.14 (1.8-2.0) μm wide. Posterior spore angle is slightly concave 160°-175°. Molecular analysis based on the small subunit 18S rDNA sequence shows that C. gouletti n. sp. is different from all other ceratomyxid species DNA sequences in GenBank. Phylogenetic trees clustered the new species with long-branching Ceratomyxa species, and it was closely related to the species Ceratomyxa longipes from two gadid fish hosts with 89% bootstrap support.

Metazoan parasite assemblages of Pagrus pagrus inhabiting the southwestern Atlantic were analysed with the aim of identifying the existence of different stocks and to comparatively assess the value of different parasite guilds as indicators of zoogeographical regions. A total of 186 fish was examined. Samples were obtained from three Brazilian and one Argentine localities, distributed in three different biogeographic districts of the Argentine Zoogeographical Province. Pagrus pagrus harboured 26 metazoan parasite species distributed in three guilds, ectoparasites (10 species), long-lived larval endoparasites and short-lived gastrointestinal endoparasites (eight species each). Prevalence and abundance values of the former two guilds allowed analysing them comparatively to assess their value as biological indicators of both host population structure and zoogeography. Results of analyses on long-lived parasites evidenced the existence of three stocks, one in the regions of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, other in southern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul) and a third in northern Argentina (Mar del Plata), responding to the differential environmental conditions characteristic of three zoogeographical ecoregions. Ectoparasite assemblages exhibited significant differences between all pairs of samples, including those considered as a single stock according to data on persistent parasites. Assemblages of long-lived larval parasites are considered as better indicators for stock assessment purposes than ectoparasites, whose population parameters were variable temporally and heterogeneous at small spatial scales. The distributional variability of persistent parasites of P. pagrus along large scales provides valuable information to help defining robust biogeographical patterns, applicable to stock identification and fishery management of this species.

During the present investigation, a total of 220 fish specimens belonging to three different species, namely, little tunny Euthynnus alletteratus, African snook Lates niloticus, and striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus, were collected from January-November 2016 from the coasts off Abu Qir landing site, Alexandria City, south-eastern Mediterranean Sea, Egypt. The collected fish samples were dissected and examined for the presence of helminth parasites. Twenty-three out of 220 (10.45%) fish specimens were found to be naturally infected with four species of trematode parasites belonging to three different families of the order Plagiorchiida. The recovered parasite species were collected and identified by applying light microscopic examinations. The present study recorded two new parasite species, namely, Stephanostomum alletterani sp. nov. and Bathycreadium mulli sp. nov., belonging to the families Acanthocolpidae and Opecoelidae and infecting E. alletteratus and M. surmuletus, respectively and re-descriptions of the two remaining species, namely, Acanthostomum spiniceps and Aponurus mulli of the families Acanthostomatidae and Opecoelidae, respectively, to clarify the measurements of some body parts. Morphological and morphometric characterizations revealed some differences between the present species and other related species detected previously. Future studies are recommended to include advanced molecular characteristics for these species.

White grub flukes, Posthodiplostomum minimum centrarchi (Trematoda), and hookworms Pomphorhynchus bulbocolli (Acanthocephala) are common internal parasites for many North American freshwater fishes. P. minimum are found as cysts in internal organ tissues, while P. bulbocolli are found as sexually mature adults in gastrointestinal (GI) tracts. Stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen (δ 13 C and δ 15 N) are commonly used to infer food web relationships in freshwater lakes. To see if δ 13 C and δ 15 N could be used to analyze parasite-host relationships, we analyzed the stable isotopes of the two species of parasites and various tissue types of their fish hosts (bluegill and pumpkinseed sunfish) from different host tissues. The samples δ 13 C and δ 15 N demonstrated that P. minimum and P. bulbocolli fed on the fish hosts livers and intestines, respectively. It is also corroborated by correlations in C/N ratios of those fish parasites and their fish host tissues. This study highlights the importance of identifying the specific host tissues parasites feed on in stable isotope analysis.

Skipjack tuna, Katsuwonus pelamis, is a tropical species of economic importance for fisheries around the world. It occurs seasonally in subtropical waters around Madeira archipelago, in the warmer months. In this study, a parasitological analysis was carried out on a sample of 30 skipjack caught near Madeira Island. A total of 24 parasite taxa were found in this sample. The skipjack parasite community detected was characterized by a wide diversity of parasites, with a predominance of adult didymozoid trematodes, and high prevalences of Tentacularia coryphaenae cestode larvae and Anisakis sp. larvae. Microhabitat distribution of gill parasites was assessed for the most prevalent species, and correlations between parasite abundance and various host features such as size, condition, and fat content were investigated. Parasite taxa which might be useful as biological tags in future studies of skipjack migrations in the Eastern Atlantic were selected.

The Japanese Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus niphonius; Perciformes: Scombridae) is widely distributed in the continental shelves of the northwestern Pacific Ocean around Japan, Sea of Japan, and East China Sea. In the present study, small, spindle-shaped myxosporean plasmodia (0.15-0.53 mm by 0.04-0.13 mm) were frequently encountered in the myofiber of trunk muscles of two Japanese Spanish mackerels; one fished in the Sea of Japan off western Japan and the other in the northwestern Pacific Ocean off southern Japan in the autumn of 2016. Isolated myxospores of Kudoa konishiae n. sp. (Myxosporea: Multivalvulida) from these two fish were stellate with six equal shell valves and polar capsules, 8.1-9.7 μm in width, 7.1-8.8 μm in thickness, and 7.1-8.8 μm in length. The polar capsules were teardrop-shaped, 2.7-4.7 μm by 1.2-2.5 μm. The lateral view of spores revealed a drawstring-pouch shape. The nucleotide sequences of the 18S and 28S ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) were distinct from any recorded species. Phylogenetic trees demonstrated a close relationship of the present new species with Kudoa spp. with stellate spores with five or more shell valves/polar capsules, recorded in scombrid fishes. To clarify the phylogenetic relationships between three closely related species, i.e., Kudoa konishiae n. sp., Kudoa hexapunctata, and Kudoa neothunni, three mitochondrial DNA genes (cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (cox-1) and the small and large subunits of the ribosomal RNA gene (rns-rnl)) of two isolates of the new species, six isolates of K. hexapunctata, and 13 isolates of K. neothunni were sequenced. The interspecific and intraspecific variations of the newly obtained cox-1 and rns-rnl nucleotide sequences of K. hexapunctata, K. neothunni, and K. konishiae n. sp. were clarified for the first time.

Digenean trematodes have complex life cycles and control of these flatworms can be accomplished by eliminating immature parasite stages from intermediate hosts. In aquaculture systems, presence of trematode metacercariae can negatively impact fish health and lead to economic losses. Posthodiplostomum minimum is a parasite of birds that uses bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) as the intermediate host and is commonly found in fish used to stock waterways for recreational purposes. In this study, we evaluated killing of P. minimum metacercariae by injectable praziquantel in naturally infected bluegills. Using propidium iodide staining and motility assessment, we found that 5 mg/kg administered intramuscularly was effective for parasite killing. However, metacercarial death was not apparent until day 7 post-treatment. Our results demonstrated that propidium iodide staining is an effective method for detecting death in metacercariae recovered from treated fish. This method was at least as sensitive as objective motility scoring and provided quantitative assessment of parasite death. Future studies involving treatment of metacercariae in fish with praziquantel may need to be carried out over a period of weeks in order to accurately assess parasite killing and would benefit from using the propidium iodide method.

Tropomyosin (TM) is a major allergen in shellfish, known to cross-react with mite, cockroach and/or some roundworm (nematode) TM. In this study, we aimed to express and purify TM from the parasitic nematode Anisakis pegreffii and also to characterise its cross-reactivity with TM from shellfish. A. pegreffii was isolated from the flathead tiger fish (Neoplatycephalus richardsoni) and characterised using single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP)-based sequencing of the first and second internal transcribed spacers (ITS-1 and ITS-2) of nuclear ribosomal DNA. The recombinant tropomyosin (rTM) of A. pegreffii was expressed, purified and confirmed by immunohistochemistry, sequencing and LC-MS/MS analyses. Immunohistochemistry showed the muscle and the base layer of the third-stage larvae (L3) of A. pegreffii as the location of TM in A. pegreffii. The molecular relationship of TM of A. pegreffii with homologs from other nematodes and crustaceans was inferred from phylogenetic analysis. Immunogenicity of TM from A. pegreffii was tested by immunoblotting, which showed that rTM from A. pegreffii binds to IgE from sera of patients with allergy to crustaceans. Immunoblotting also showed that the anti-TM monoclonal antibody (MAb) did not recognise rTM from A. pegreffii. The rTM from A. pegreffii was, however, recognised by anti-TM polyclonal antibodies (PAbs) as well as anti-crustacean polyclonal antibodies (PAbs). The detection of specific serum IgE antibody against parasite TM has been proposed as a useful approach for the diagnosis of parasite-induced allergy. The findings of this study merit further exploration of the cross-reactive allergenic proteins of Anisakis for improved, future diagnosis of allergenic diseases.

A new species of acanthocephalan infecting marine and brackish water fishes from the south-west coast of India is described. The parasite belongs to the genus Tenuiproboscis, and the fish hosts include Lutjanus argentimaculatus, L. ehrenbergii, Siganus javus, Epinephelus malabaricus, E. coioides, Scatophagus argus, Parascolopsis aspinosa, Caranx ignobilis, Gerres filamentosus and Lates calcarifer. The parasite inhabits mid- and hindgut regions and is characterised by an elongated, cylindrical, bulbous and posteriorly tapering metasoma and a claviform proboscis having 14-15 rows of 14-15 hooks each. Females larger than males, measured 3898.16-10,318.00 μm (6430.00 ± 1417.30) in length and 458.93-1435.68 μm (929.81 ± 250.39) in width. Males measured 3234.89-8644.20 μm (5729.50 ± 1176.60) in length and 388.30-1584.61 μm (795.88 ± 184.12) in width. Parasites recovered from different host species showed morphological/morphometric variations. However, principal component analysis (PCA) revealed significant overlapping of characters indicating their similarities. Proboscis profiling based on variations in size and position of hooks also yielded similar results. Further, in molecular phylogenetic analysis, parasites from different fish hosts formed a monophyletic clade with strong bootstrap support, again indicating their conspecific nature. These morphological/morphometric variations can be ascribed to differences in host species. Morphology and morphometrics in combination with PCA, proboscis profiling and molecular analysis suggest the present acanthocephalan parasite is different from other described species of Tenuiproboscis. Hence, it is considered as a new species and named T. keralensis n. sp. Prevalence, intensity and abundance of the parasite in different hosts are also discussed.
