Intracavitary treatment of patients with chronic otitis media or sinusitis by application of 186Re-colloids into the middle ear or the paranasal sinuses, called RTSO, is effective and well tolerated. Clinical improvement is supported by objective data from audiometry, endoscopy, and CT. The method of local irradiation of an inflamed mucosa by β-emitting radionuclides can thus be extended from RSO to otherwise therapy-resistant patients with chronic otitis media and paranasal sinusitis. Compared with other intracavitary treatments, such as irradiation of intracranial cystic tumors, RTSO exerts much less radiation load and does not show any severe side effects. RTSO may overcome the disadvantages of insufficient radiation dose and high invasiveness as seen in former treatment methods using simple X-ray therapy or different applicator tubes.

A method is proposed to process ECD brain SPECT images representing epileptic hot spots inside the brain. For validation 35 ictal —interictal patient image data were processed. The images were registered by a normalized mutual information method, then the separation of the suspicious and normal brain areas were performed by two threshold-based segmentations. Normalization between the images was performed by local normal brain mean values. Based on the validation made by two medical physicians, minimal human intervention in the segmentation parameters was necessary to detect all epileptic spots and minimize the number of false spots inside the brain.

Fur die qualitative Beurteilung der Funktionsfahigkeit der Tuba Eustachii stehen uns unterschiedliche audio-metrische Verfahren zur Verfugung. Schwierig war bisher eine quantitative Darstellung. In Anlehnung an die szintigraphischen Lungenventilationsanalysen wurde am Klinikum der CAU-Kiel eine Methode zur szintigraphischen Tubenventilationsanalyse erarbeitet.
