Abstract

Feeding rate variability of wild haddock larvae showed moderate to high rates of food consumption over the entire 10-day period. The diel variability in the gut fullness, prey digestive state and tryptic enzyme activity indicated lag period between food intake and digestion.

Abstract

An enzymatic activity assay using a fluorescence technique and a quantitative method using radioimmunoassay were compared for their ability to measure fish larval trypsin content. The results showed that the two methods give similar results, as trypsin activity is correlated with trypsin quantity. The differences between the two methods are discussed and their potential use in the assessment of nutritional status of larval fish for fisheries purposes are examined.
