Thallium as a highly toxic metal element has been listed as one of priority drinking water contaminants. In this study, manganese oxide nanoparticles were synthesized through a simple hydrothermal method and applied for the removal of thallium(I). The adsorbent was composed of numerous needle-like nanorods and had an average volume diameter of 230 nm after heat-drying procedure. The crystal form of adsorbent was determined as α-MnO 2 . The adsorbent exhibited a much faster adsorption rate than most of previously reported adsorbent, achieving over 66.4% of equilibrium adsorption capacity in the first 10 min. The adsorption process was found to be highly affected by solution pH and higher than 100 mg/g of adsorption capacity could be obtained in a wide pH range of 6.0-10.0. The isotherm study indicated that the adsorption of Tl(I) on the adsorbent was favorable and governed by a chemisorption process, with the maximum adsorption capacity of 505.5 mg/g at pH 7.0. The adsorption process was confirmed to be thermodynamically spontaneous and endothermic. The presence of Na + , K + , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , and Cu 2+ cations had certain negative effects on the uptake of Tl(I). Based on the batch experiments and XPS analysis, the deprotonated hydroxyl groups that bonded to manganese atoms worked as the binding sites for the effective removal of Tl(I) ions and no redox reaction occurred during the adsorption process.

Because of its high toxicity, thallium (Tl) causes environmental pollution even at very low concentrations. Despite its extremely high environmental risk, limited information about Tl removal from water is present on the literature. This work focused on the use of an eco-friendly and low-cost Ilex paraguariensis (yerba mate) biowaste to remove Tl from environmental water samples. Raw (YM) and L-cysteine chemically modified yerba mate (YM@LC) were used. The effect of pH and biosorbent concentration on the biosorption capacity was studied using an experimental design. The optimal experimental conditions were as follows: YM concentration 0.25 g L -1 , pH 6.0, and YM@LC concentration 0.25 g L -1 , pH 4.0. Kinetic studies yielded data that were in accordance with pseudo-second-order model. Equilibrium studies were also developed and indicated that the most appropriate model was that of Sips, with a maximum capacity of biosorption at 328 K of 333.4 mg g -1 for YM and 384.4 mg g -1 for YM@LC. The thermodynamic evaluation exhibited an endothermic, spontaneous, and favorable biosorption for both biosorbents. YM and YM@LC showed significant potential for Tl removal from environmental water samples.

Although thallium (Tl) is a highly toxic element, little information is available on the environmental risks of Tl in agricultural soils with intensive practices, particularly nearby mining sites. Therefore, we investigated the potential release of Tl in acidic soils with intensive cultivation nearby a waste copper mining site from southern China based on its level and chemical fractions as well as simulated release under artificial acid rain. Results showed that the average Tl content was 1.31 mg/kg in the studied area, which significantly exceeds the permissible thallium value of 1 mg/kg for agricultural soil in China. Some vertical increases of soil Tl from different land uses indicate the potential transport of Tl downward to groundwater. High positive correlations between surficial soil Tl and rubidium (Rb) and copper (Cu) indicated that Tl has the lithophile and chalcophile behavior. Tl in soils is mainly entrapped in residual fraction. The exchangeable fraction of Tl in agricultural soils was less than undisturbed natural soils and copper mined soils. Additionally, the percentage of Tl release from undisturbed natural soils and soils of copper ore area was more than that from agricultural soils in simulated acid rain. Furthermore, the releases of Tl from the soils increased with the acidity of artificial acid rain. Thus, more attention must be paid to land management of this similar area to avoid the risk of Tl impact on human health.

We present a quantitative study on the performance of cadmium zinc telluride (CZT), thallium-doped sodium iodide (NaI(Tl)) and germanium (Ge) detectors as potential Compton camera absorbers. The GEANT4 toolkit was used to model the performance of these materials over the nuclear medicine energy range. CZT and Ge demonstrate the highest and lowest efficiencies respectively. Although the best spatial resolution was attained for Ge, its lowest ratio of single photoelectric to multiple interactions suggests that it is most prone to inter-pixel cross-talk. In contrast, CZT, which demonstrates the least positioning error due to multiple interactions, has a comparable spatial resolution with Ge. Therefore, we modelled a Compton camera system based on silicon (Si) and CZT as the scatterer and absorber respectively. The effects of the detector parameters of our proposed system on image resolution were evaluated and our results show good agreement with previous studies. Interestingly, spatial resolution which accounted for the least image degradation at 140.5 keV became the dominant degrading factor at 511 keV, indicating that the absorber parameters play some key roles at higher energies. The results of this study have validated the predictions by An et al. which state that the use of a higher energy gamma source together with reduction of the absorber segmentation to sub-millimetre could achieve the image resolution of 5 mm required in medical imaging.

Objective: The purpose of the study was to investigate natural radionuclide uptake and allocation by trees., Materials and Methods: Samples from six Scots pines (P. sylvestris), six Norway spruces (Picea abies) and one sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) tree, growing on the Boršt uranium mill tailings waste pile in Slovenia were collected. (238)U, (230)Th, (226)Ra and (210)Pb activity concentrations in wood, shoots and 1-year-old needles or leaves were determined. Particular radionuclides were separated from the samples by appropriate radiochemical procedures and their activity concentrations measured with an alpha spectrometry system. In addition, concentration ratios for different plant parts were calculated., Results and Conclusions: Results showed that for all radionuclides, the highest activity concentrations were found in foliage, followed by shoots and wood. The activity concentrations in trees were from 0.01 to 5.4 Bq kg(-1) for (238)U, 0.03-11.3 Bq kg(-1) for (230)Th, 2.7-2,728 Bq kg(-1) for (226)Ra and 5.1-321 Bq kg(-1) for (210)Pb. All activity concentrations were calculated on dry weight basis. The calculated concentration ratios were from 1.05E-5 to 5.39E-3 for (238)U, 7.65E-6-2.88E-3 for (230)Th, 3.10E-4-3.16E-1 for (226)Ra and 6.70E-4-4.22E-2 for (210)Pb.

The exclusion of polar dyes by healthy cells is widely employed as a simple and reliable test for cell membrane integrity. However, commonly used dyes (propidium, Yo-Pro-1, trypan blue) cannot detect membrane defects which are smaller than the dye molecule itself, such as nanopores that form by exposure to ultrashort electric pulses (USEPs). Instead, here we demonstrate that opening of nanopores can be efficiently detected and studied by fluorescent measurement of Tl(+) uptake. Various mammalian cells (CHO, GH3, NG108), loaded with a Tl(+)-sensitive fluorophore FluxOR and subjected to USEPs in a Tl(+)-containing bath buffer, displayed an immediate (within <100 ms), dose-dependent surge of fluorescence. In all tested cell lines, the threshold for membrane permeabilization to Tl(+) by 600-ns USEP was at 1-2 kV/cm, and the rate of Tl(+) uptake increased linearly with increasing the electric field. The lack of concurrent entry of larger dye molecules suggested that the size of nanopores is less than 1-1.5 nm. Tested ion channel inhibitors as well as removal of the extracellular Ca(2+) did not block the USEP effect. Addition of a Tl(+)-containing buffer within less than 10 min after USEP also caused a fluorescence surge, which confirms the minutes-long lifetime of nanopores. Overall, the technique of fluorescent detection of Tl(+) uptake proved highly effective, noninvasive and sensitive for visualization and analysis of membrane defects which are too small for conventional dye uptake detection methods.

A simple and sensitive spectrofluorometric method was developed for the simultaneous determination of ascorbic acid and cysteine by a flow-injection system. This method is based on the reduction of Tl(III) with ascorbic acid or cysteine in acidic media, producing fluorescence reagent, TlCl3(2-) (lambdaex = 227 nm, lambdaem = 419 nm). The injected sample solution was divided into two separate streams. The first stream was treated with Tl(III) at pH 3.0 and then passed through a 270 cm reaction coil to the flow cell of the spectrofluorometer, where the fluorescence intensity was measured. This signal is related to ascorbic acid and cysteine concentration. The second part of the injected sample solution was treated with Tl(III) in HCl solution and then passed through a 50 cm reaction coil to the flow cell and the fluorescence intensity was measured. This signal is related only to cysteine. Thus, the ascorbic acid content was determined directly by the difference according to the calibration curve. Ascorbic acid and cysteine can be determined in the range of 1 x 10(-6) to 5.0 x 10(-5) M, at a rate of 16 samples per hour. The limits of detection (S/N = 3) were 8 x 10(-7) M for ascorbic acid and 7 x 10(-7) M for cysteine. The influence of potential interfering substances was studied. The proposed method was successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of both analytes in real samples.

The formation constants of the species formed in the systems H+ + thallium(I) + AMP and H+ + AMP have been determined in aqueous solutions of methanol at 25 degrees C and constant ionic strength 0.1 mol dm(-3) sodium perchlorate, using spectrophotometric and potentiometric techniques. Thallium(I) forms two mononuclear 1:1 complexes with AMP of the type TlHL and TlL- in the pH range of study (1-11), where L2- represents the fully dissociated ligand. The formation constants in various media were analyzed in terms of Kamlet and Taft's parameters. Single-parameter correlation of the formation constants, beta111, and beta101, versus alpha (hydrogen-bond donor acidity), beta (hydrogen-bond accepter basicity), and for pi* (dipolarity/polarizability) are relatively poor in all solutions, but multi-parameter correlation represents significant improvement with regard to the single-parameter models. Finally, the results are discussed in terms of the effect of the solvent on complexation.

A simple, sensitive and rapid spectrophotometric method was developed for the determination of thallium(III) using trifluoperazine hydrochloride (TFPH). The method is based on the oxidation of TFPH by thallium(III) in a phosphoric acid medium to form a red-colored radical cation with an absorption maximum at 505 nm. Beer's law is valid over the concentration range of 0.5 - 6.5 microg ml(-1) of thallium(III). The molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity of the color system are 2.14 x 10(4) l mol(-1) cm(-1) and 0.0095 microg cm(-2), respectively. The optimum reaction conditions and other analytical parameters were evaluated. The tolerance limit of the method towards various ions usually associated with thallium has been studied. The proposed method has been successfully applied to the analysis of thallium in alloys, minerals, standard reference material, water, and urine samples.
