Simulation has been used in dental education from the mid-eighteenth century. Since that early time, simulation in dental education has progressed from the use of oversized models of teeth to simulated patients, high-fidelity virtual reality, haptics, and most recently robotics. This chapter is intended to describe current simulation modalities for dental education and dental practice: the use of simulation to minimize patient harm and the use of simulation to improve operator’s performance. More specifically, simulation modalities that will be discussed in this chapter are simulation of patients (standardized patients), Web-based or computer-based simulations, simulation with virtual reality-based technology, technology with haptic focus, robotics, game-based simulation, and advanced navigational simulation (global positioning-type systems). Majority of the devices described in this chapter have been recently developed or were introduced to the dental community less than 10–15 years ago. The simulation devices are being tested in academia and private offices and evidence of their use in the preclinical environment and in patient care is reviewed in this chapter.
