Abstract A precise land suitability assessment plays a vital role in modern agriculture to sustain production against population explosions worldwide without affecting natural resources or environmental factors. Further, recent urbanization has led to a reduction in arable land and forced the conversion of non-arable land to arable land. Therefore, developing land suitability with its potential and limitations is essential through advanced techniques like multi-criteria Decision Analysis for the particular area. The current research aimed to assess the land suitability of the Manimutha Nadhi watershed, Tamil Nadu, India, using geographical information system (GIS) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods. This study area, Manimutha Nadhi, covers a total area of 263.89 km2. Using a random sampling technique, 57 soil samples were obtained. The parameters for the AHP study were soil pH, EC, Soil organic carbon (SOC), available NPK, soil texture, and soil erosion. The climatic parameters, Annaula average rainfall (AAR) and Annual average temperature (AAT) and topographic parameter slope of the study area are also used as the criteria for generating final agricultural land suitability. The final suitability map through GIS and AHP was created using weighted overlay analysis. The land suitability class on the basis of FAO classification is highly suitable (S1), moderately suitable (S2), marginally suitable (S3), currently not suitable (N1), and permanently not suitable (N2) for agriculture. The results of the final land suitability map by AHP and GIS revealed that 150.58 km2 (57.09%) of the research region is highly suitable for agriculture (S1). The 29.60 km2 (10.08%) area was moderately suitable (S2) for irrigated agriculture. The 53.37 km2 (20.20%) area was marginally suitable (S3) for irrigated agriculture. The 10.56 km2 (7.53%) area was currently unsuitable (N1) for agricultural uses. The area of about 13.45 km2 (5.10%) was permanently unsuitable (N2) for agriculture. The outcomes can be used as baseline information on the land that could strengthen agriculture production in the Manimutha Nadhi watershed.

Background: The bipolar radiofrequency ablation(B-RFA) strategy was increasingly used to target deep intramural re-entrant foci responsible for the arrhythmia not ablated by conventional unipolar RFA / sequential unipolar RFA. Lesional characteristics of various bipolar configurations were largely unknown., Objective: To investigate the lesional geometry in relation to various factors to determine the most effective ablation strategy that minimises steam pops and achieves transmurality. To assess the temperatures at the return electrode., Methods: A custom-made validated ex-vivo bipolar ablation model was used to assess lesion formation. The myocardial sample was placed between two ablation catheters in four different orientations. Lesions were created using different power (30 W, 40 W, 50 W) and time settings(30, 40 and 50 s) with different catheter orientations. Data was analysed using binary logistic regression and multiple linear regression., Results: Among 107 lesions, The volume of the active catheter lesion (266 +/- 137 mm^3) significantly differed from their return electrode counterparts (130 +/- 91.8 mm^3) (p < 0.001), and the temperatures at the return electrode end were lower than at the active electrode (p = 0.004). Higher power and longer duration application led to more frequent steam pops (p < 0.001), while true parallel configuration resulted in fewer steam pops (p < 0.001)., Conclusion: A custom model without ground electrode temperature monitoring is safe and cost-effective. The safest strategy is a true parallel configuration with an inter-electrode distance of at least 15 mm and a power of 30 W to 40 W, which generates lower steam pops and better transmurality., (© 2024. Introduction: This study compares outcomes after LESS cholecystectomy utilizing epidural versus general anesthesia., Methods: Patients undergoing LESS Cholecystectomy were randomized into receiving epidural or general anesthesia by protocol. Patients used a Visual Analog Scale to rate pain from 0 (no pain) to 10 (severe pain). Data presented as median (mean ± standard deviation)., Results: 75 patients underwent LESS cholecystectomy with general anesthesia [32 patients (22% men) after five patients withdrew consent] or epidural anesthesia [23 patients (22% men) after 15 patients withdrew consent]. Respectively, they were of age 38 years (41 ± 15.1) and 47 years (48 ± 13.9), BMI 29 (28 ± 4.9) kg/m 2 and 28 (28 ± 3.8) kg/m 2 , and ASA 2 (2 ± 0.5) and 2 (2 ± 0.3) (p > 0.05 for all). LOS for patients receiving general vs. epidural anesthesia was 72 min (122 ± 104.4) vs. 95 min (113 ± 77.5) (p = 0.25). On POD 0, patients receiving general anesthesia rated pain as 4 (4 ± 2.9) vs. 0 (1 ± 2.2) for epidural anesthesia (p = 0.02). On POD 1, they rated pain as 6 (5 ± 2.3) vs. 6 (6 ± 2.9) (p = 0.68). On POD 6, patients rated pain as 3 (3 ± 2.7) vs. 4 (3 ± 2.2) (p = 1.00). For patient satisfaction with incisional scars for those receiving general vs. epidural anesthesia, patients rated their scars to be 10 (8 ± 3.6) vs. 10 (9 ± 1.2) (p = 0.21). Total costs for the hospital using general vs. epidural anesthesia were found $6,909 (7,167 ± 2,083.8) vs. $6,225 (5,848 ± 1530.1) (p = 0.014), respectively. Patients self-assessed satisfaction on a scale of 1 (worst) to 5 (best) as a 5 (5 ± 0)., Conclusions: Patients undergoing LESS cholecystectomy with general vs. epidural anesthesia had similar demographics, LOS, and pain scores. Patients that received epidural anesthesia reported less pain and incurred less cost. Utilization of epidural anesthesia in lieu of general anesthesia for LESS cholecystectomy is safe, reduces pain, and offers potential cost savings., (© 2024. Objective: With the increased adoption of robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy, the effects of unplanned conversions to an 'open' operation are ill-defined. This study aims to describe the impact of unplanned conversions of robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy on short-term outcomes and suggest a stepwise approach for safe unplanned conversions during robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy., Methods: This is an analysis of 400 consecutive patients undergoing robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy in a single high-volume institution. Data are presented as median (mean ± SD), and significance is accepted with 95% probability., Results: Between November 2012 and February 2023, 184 (46%) women and 216 (54%) men, aged 70 (68 ± 11.0) years, underwent a robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy. Unplanned conversions occurred in 42 (10.5%) patients; 18 (5%) were converted due to unanticipated vascular involvement, 13 (3%) due to failure to obtain definitive control of bleeding, and 11 (3%) due to visceral obesity. Men were more likely to require a conversion than women (29 vs. 13, p = 0.05). Conversions were associated with shorter operative time (376 (323 ± 182.2) vs. 434 (441 ± 98.7) min, p < 0.0001) but higher estimated blood loss (675 (1010 ± 1168.1) vs. 150 (196 ± 176.8) mL, p < 0.0001). Patients that required an unplanned conversion had higher rates of complications with Clavien-Dindo scores of   III-V (31% vs. 12%, p = 0.003), longer length of stay (8 (11 ± 11.6) vs. 5 (7 ± 6.2), p = 0.0005), longer ICU length of stay (1 (2 ± 5.1) vs. 0 (0 ± 1.3), p < 0.0001) and higher mortality rates (21% vs. 4%, p = 0.0001). The conversion rate significantly decreased over time (p < 0.0001)., Conclusions: Unplanned conversions of robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy significantly and negatively affect short-term outcomes, including postoperative mortality. Men were more likely to require a conversion than women. The unplanned conversions rates significantly decreased over time, implying that increased proficiency and patient selection may prevent unplanned conversions. An unplanned conversion should be undertaken in an organized stepwise approach to maximize patient safety., (© 2023. A coastal region is a section of land that borders a significant body of water, often the sea or ocean. Despite their productivity, they are sensitive to even little alterations in the outside environment. This study aims to develop a spatial coastal vulnerability index (CVI) map for the Tamil Nadu coast of India, which has diverse coastal and marine environments that are ecologically fragile zones. Climate change is expected to increase the intensity and frequency of severe coastal hazards, such as rising sea levels, cyclones, storm surges, tsunamis, erosion, and accretion, severely impacting local environmental and socio-economic conditions. This research employed expert knowledge, weights, and scores from the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to create vulnerability maps. The process includes the integration of various parameters such as geomorphology, Land use and land cover (LULC), significant wave height (SWH), rate of sea level rise (SLR), shoreline change (SLC), bathymetry, elevation, and coastal inundation. Based on the results, the very low, low, and moderate vulnerability regions comprise 17.26%, 30.77%, and 23.46%, respectively, whereas the high and very high vulnerability regions comprise 18.20% and 10.28%, respectively. The several locations tend to be high and very high due to land-use patterns and coastal structures, but very few are contributed by geomorphological features. The results are validated by conducting a field survey in a few locations along the coast. In this study, a comparison of 17 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) data sets with Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) data in terms of finding out extreme precipitation indices obtained by the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI) is done. The extreme indices considered were the consecutive dry days (CDD), consecutive wet days (CWD), maximum 1-day precipitation (RX1DAY), maximum 5-day precipitation (RX5DAY), precipitation > 2.5 mm (RR2.5), heavy precipitation > 10 mm (R10MM), very heavy precipitation > 20 mm (R20MM), and simple daily intensity (SDII) that have been calculated for 17 CMIP6 datasets from 1950 to 2014 with IMD-gridded precipitation datasets over India. Rankings were assigned using the TOPSIS method with evaluation metrics as CC and RMSE as conditions. Almost all datasets performed well for indices, i.e., CWD, R10MM, R20MM, and RR2.5. The top 5 performing models are EC-Earth3, EC-Earth3-Veg, MRI-ESM2-0, GFDL-ESM4, and MIROC6 which were ensembled and projected for future periods in the near (2015-2040), middle (2041-2070), and far future (2070-2100), and extreme indices were calculated under Shared Socioeconomic Pathways 126 (SSP126), SSP245, SSP370, and SSP585 scenarios. The ensemble mean shows that RX1DAY, RX5DAY, R10MM, R20MM, and CWD are observed to increase in western ghats and northeastern regions of India. Central India exhibits a dynamic influence on precipitation indices in different climate change scenarios. The temporal variation for the SSP585 scenario predicts significant increases of about 45.41%, 149.40%, 52.26%, and 45.92% in R10MM, R20MM, RX1DAY, and RX5DAY over the current climate. Evaluations of probable environmental impacts of point and diffuse source pollution at regional sizes are essential to achieve sustainable development of natural resources such as land and water. This research focused on how nitrate and phosphorus load varied over time and space in the Vamanapuram River Basin (VRB). Phosphorus and nitrate loads have been evaluated in the VRB using the semi-distributed Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) hydrological model. SWAT Calibration and Uncertainty Programs (SWAT-CUP) have simulated the developed model using the Sequential Uncertainty Fitting, version 2(SUFI-2). The developed model was simulated for 2001 to 2008, and it was split into two-phase calibration and validation phases. Model performance was evaluated by the percentage of bias (PBAIS) and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE). The simulated performance of nitrate was indicated as NSE = 0.22-0.59 and PBIAS = 51.86-65.88. The simulated performance of phosphorus showed NSE = 0.06-0.33 and PBIAS = 15.14-33.97. Total Phosphorus load was most sensitive to the organic Phosphorus enrichment ratio (ERORGP) and CH&#95;N2 for streamflow simulation. This study concluded that the South-western region was a high potential for nutrient loads. From the dairy herds (n = 16) reared in few localities of South India with the history of reproductive inefficiency and incidental abortion, 176 sera samples from Jersey (n = 108) and Holstein Friesian (n = 68) crossbred cows were collected to detect prevalence of bovine neosporosis antibodies induced by Neospora caninum (N. caninum) through competitive enzyme linked immuno-sorbent assay (cELISA). The overall true prevalence was found as 23.5% whereas 7.7, 19.1, 25.7 and 40.5% was observed in cows of less than 1 year, 1 to 3 years, 3 to 6 years and above 6 years of age, respectively, denoting that increase in prevalence of N. caninum antibody correlated directly with the age. Among the cattle with and without abortion, 41.1 and 20.6% of true prevalence was found, respectively. The breed-wise true prevalence was 24.3 and 22.2% in Jersey and Holstein Friesians crossbred cows, respectively, indicating that crossbred cows of both breeds are equally susceptible to neosporosis. The prevalence of N. caninum antibody might be attributed to coexistence of dogs resulting in contamination of feed with dog faeces. The presence of dogs with the cattle herd predisposed the herd 3.59 times more to acquire neosporosis than the herd without dogs. Groundwater vulnerability assessment using the fuzzy logic technique is attempted in this study. A hierarchical fuzzy inference system is created to serve the selected objective. The parameters considered in this study are similar to the seven parameters used in conventional DRASTIC methods; however, the effect of land use and land cover is studied by including it as an additional parameter in a model. A hierarchy is created by comparing two input parameters, say (D and R), and the output of the same is paired as an input with the third parameter (A) and so on using the fuzzy toolbox in MATLAB. Thus, the final output of fuzzy inference systems six and seven (FI6 and FI7) is defuzzified and mapped using ArcGIS to obtain the groundwater vulnerability zones by fuzzy DRASTIC and fuzzy DRASTIC-L. Each map is grouped into five vulnerability classes: very high, high, moderate, low, and very low. Further, the results were validated using the observed nitrate concentration from 51 groundwater sampling points. The receiver operating curve (ROC) technique is adopted to determine the best suitable model for the selected study. From this, area under the curve is estimated and found to be 0.83 for fuzzy DRASTIC and 0.90 for fuzzy DRASTIC-L; the study concludes that fuzzy DRASTIC-L has a better value of AUC suits best for assessing the groundwater vulnerability in Thoothukudi District., (© 2021. The study on land use and land cover (LULC) changes assists in analyzing the change and regulates environment sustainability. Hence, this research analyzes the Northern TN coast, which is under both natural and anthropogenic stress. The analysis of LULC changes and LULC projections for the region between 2009-2019 and 2019-2030 was performed utilizing Google Earth Engine (GEE), TerrSet, and Geographical Information System (GIS) tools. LULC image is generated from Landsat images and classified in GEE using Random Forest (RF). LULC maps were then framed with the CA-Markov model to forecast future LULC change. It was carried out in four steps: (1) change analysis, (2) transition potential, (3) change prediction, and (4) model validation. For analyzing change statistics, the study region is divided into zone 1 and zone 2. In both zones, the water body shows a decreasing trend, and built-up areas are in increasing trend. Barren land and vegetation classes are found to be under stress, developing into built-up. The overall accuracy was above 89%, and the kappa coefficient was above 87% for all 3 years. The groundwater is very precious in the world. Rapid urbanization and industrialization create tremendous stress on groundwater quality and quantity. Unscientific groundwater extraction and waste disposal methods impact the groundwater aquifer's susceptibility in the coastal area. This research examines how industrial waste, seawater intrusion, and solid waste dumping affect the Thoothukudi District, located on the southwest coast of Tamil Nadu, India. The groundwater vulnerability potential is determined using the DRASTIC and analytical hierarchy process (AHP)-based DRASTIC model. DRASTIC-AHP method's weights and ranks are determined using multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA)-based pairwise comparison method. Remote sensing (RS) and geographical information system (GIS) are implemented to prepare the input layers for DRASTIC and DRASTIC-AHP. The findings reveal a very high category of vulnerability along the coastline that is covered in sand and loose sediments from an aquifer. Similar conditions exist on the southeast side, which is covered with gravel, sand, and sandstone with shale and has relatively low-slope topography. This enables higher contaminant percolation into the groundwater and raises the possibility for pollution. The DRASTIC-AHP method's results reveal that the southeast side has a significant possibility of contamination. The water table, net recharge, vadose zone, and conductivity greatly impacted the DRASTIC vulnerability assessment due to their stronger weight than theoretical weight. It may be stated that the DRASTIC technique is more cost-effective and time-efficient in analyzing a wide range of regional groundwater risks while avoiding sloppy, uncontrolled land development and other unwanted activities., (© 2022. Detecting the probable impact of climate change responses on hydrological components is most important for understanding such changes on water resources. The impact of climate change on virtual parameters of water was assessed through hydrological modeling of the Wunna, Mahanadi (Middle), and Bharathpuzha watersheds. In this article, future hydrological component responses under two Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios were considered for investigating the runoff, sediment, and water storage components. RegCM4 CSIRO-Mk3.6.0 CORDEX South Asia of RCM model was used which is specially downscaled for the Asian region by IITM-India. Delta change method was adopted to remove bias correction in RCM data. Hydrological simulation for current and future periods was performed by GIS interfaced Soil Water and Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. The surface runoff of Wunna and Bharathpuzha watersheds and the yield of sediment are expected to increase further under RCP8.5 than RCP4.5 and in contrast to Mahanadi watershed. Both blue water storage (BW) and green water storage (GWS) of Wunna watershed are expected to decline under RCP4.5, and rise under RCP8.5 scenario. Both BW and GWS of Bharathpuzha are expected to increase in the future except in western region under RCP4.5 scenario. BW of Mahanadi is expected to increase in the future. However, GWS will decrease in some of the sub-basins. The model-generated results will be helpful for future water resources planning and development.

Groundwater is a primary source of living which also requires preservative measures for furture generations. Due to the lack of effective management technologies, the wastewater generated by rapid urbanization and industrialization is being disposed untreated, leading to groundwater contamination, caused by infiltration and accumulation. This problem has become more intense in major cities of India. The present work is based on determining the water quality using fuzzy index developed for the Perambalur district, Tamilnadu, India, from where 30 groundwater samples were collected from bore well as well as dug well sources. The research focusses mainly on chemical parameters like total hardness (T.H.), total dissolved solids (TDS.), potential hydrogen (pH), calcium (Ca 2+ ), magnesium (Mg 2+ ), potassium (K), sulphates (SO 4 2- ), total nitrates (NO 3  + NO 2 ), fluoride (F), bicarbonate (HCO 3 ), carbonate (CO 3 2- ) and chloride (Cl 2- ). These parameters were assessed for fuzzy water quality index (FWQI) model, and the index was designed concerning Mamdani fuzzy inference system. Five FIS models with different linguistic variables were developed based on triangular membership function with the implementation of 189 numbers of rules. Finally, fuzzy model was classified into five categories, such as excellent, good, poor, very poor and not-suitable. Based on the results obtained from this model, 6 samples were classified into excellent, 8 samples into good, 12 to poor, 3 to very poor and 1 to not-suitable. In connection with that, the results of proposed model were compared with the output obtained from the deterministic method.

The availability of generic direct acting antivirals (DAAs) for hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment has prompted many low-and-middle-income countries to launch HCV elimination programs. Because the efficacy of some of these generic DAAs varies by HCV viral subtype, information on subtype distribution can contribute important information to these elimination programs. We conducted a cross-sectional serosurvey to characterize HCV subtype diversity among HIV positive people who inject drugs (PWID) across 14 cities in India. Of 801 HIV positive PWID sampled, 639 tested HCV antibody positive (78.9%). Among 105 samples sequenced, genotype 3 (58.1%) was the most commonly observed followed by genotype 1 (36.2%) and genotype 6 (5.7%). Of the genotype 3 infections, 65% were subtype 3a and 35% were subtype 3b. Of the genotype 1 infections, 94% were subtype 1a and 6% were subtype 1b. All genotype 6 samples were subtype 6n. There was some variability in genotype diversity depending on geographic region and PWID epidemic stage with greater diversity observed in older PWID epidemics. One sequence, HY018, did not cluster with any known reference sequences in phylogenetic analysis. Nearly 80% of HIV infected PWID across India are co-infected with HCV, and subtype prevalence and genetic diversity varied by region and PWID epidemic stage. In the recent decades, flavonoid metal complexes have been widely investigated for their multifaceted role in enabling osteoblast differentiation and bone formation. Silibinin complexed with copper(II) ion has been synthesized along with two mixed ligand complexes, namely copper(II) silibinin-phenanthroline and neocuproine as co-ligands, and their positive role in promoting neovacularization and osteoblast differentiation was investigated. Silibinin mono complex [Cu(sil)(H 2 O) 2 ] and [Cu(sil)(phen)] showed similar UV-visible absorption in the region of 315 and 222 nm, whereas Cu(silibinin)(neocuproine) [Cu(sil)(neo)] showed a blueshift in the 320 nm transition. The involvement of carbonyl group present in the C-ring in metal ion chelation was identified by FT-IR analysis. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) depicted that [Cu(sil)(neo)] has higher thermal stability when compared with the control silibinin and Cu-silibinin mono, and phen complexes. Cu-silibinin complexes were found to be non-toxic to human MG-63 cells and mouse mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Our investigations identified the positive role of these complexes in promoting osteoblast differentiation by enhancing calcium deposition and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity at the cellular level and stimulation of osteoblastic marker genes such as Runx2, ALP, type 1 collagen, and OCN mRNAs expression at the molecular level. These complexes also supported angiogenesis by upregulation of VEGF and Ang 1 expression in mouse MSCs. Hence, our results suggest that the potential of these metal complexes along with mixed ligand complexes promoted osteoblast differentiation, thus warranting its candidature for bone tissue regeneration application.

Yellow grease from restaurants is typically waste cooking oil (WCO) free from suspended food particles with free fatty acid (FFA) content less than 15%. This study proposes an approach to formulate a renewable, eco-friendly fuel by recycling WCO with diesel (D) and n-pentanol (P) to improve fuel-spray characteristics. Three ternary blends (D50-WCO45-P5, D50-WCO40-P10 and D50-WCO30-P20) were selected based on the stability tests and prepared with an objective to substitute diesel by 50% with up to 45% recycled component (WCO) and up to 20% bio-component (n-pentanol) by volume. The fuel properties of these ternary blends were measured and compared. The emission impacts of these blends on a diesel engine were analysed in comparison with diesel and D50-WCO50 (50% of diesel + 50% of WCO) under naturally articulated and EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) approaches. Doping of n-pentanol showed improved fuel properties when compared to D50-WCO50. Viscosity is reduced up to 45%. Cetane number and density were comparable to that of diesel. Addition of n-pentanol to D50-WCO50 presented improved brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) for all ternary blends. Brake thermal efficiency (BTE) of D50-WCO30-P20 blend is comparable to diesel due to improved atomization. Smoke opacity reduced, HC emissions increased and CO emissions remained unchanged with doping n-pentanol in the WCO. NOx emission increases with increase in n-pentanol and remained lower than diesel and all load conditions. However, NOx can be decreased by up to threefold using EGR. By adopting this approach, WCO can be effectively reused as a clean energy source by negating environmental hazards before and after its use in diesel engines, instead of being dumped into sewers and landfills.

Avian influenza is a highly infectious and dynamically evolving disease of birds causing high morbidity and mortality. It is caused by avian influenza virus (AIV) that belongs to the family Orthomyxoviridae. Two types of AIV have been described based on their pathogenicity viz. highly pathogenic avian influenza virus that causes severe disease with high mortality and low pathogenic avian influenza virus (LPAI) that generally causes asymptomatic infection or a mild disease. The H9N2 subtype is the widely circulated LPAI type in the world. The H9N2 subtype of was first reported from northern India in March 2003. However, systematical surveillance information for the evolution of H9N2 viruses in poultry flocks of Southern India is lacking. The present study reports the isolation and characterization of H9N2 isolates from the southern parts of the country during the period between May 2010 and September 2011. Out of the 30 poultry flocks investigated, six were found to be positive for HA activity. Further, all the six samples conformed as AIV. Partial nucleotide sequencing of the HA and NA genes revealed that all were belonging to the H9N2 subtype. Phylogenetically, the HA and NA genes of the H9N2 viruses from India clustered with those isolated from Bangladesh, Pakistan and the Middle East, although we were not able to conclude on their exact geographic origin.

Background: Phenol is one of the most versatile and important organic compound. It is also a growing concern as water pollutants due to its high persistence and toxicity. Removal of Phenol from wastewaters was investigated using a novel nanoparticle adsorption and nanofiltration technique named as Nanoparticle Assisted Nano Filtration (NANF)., Methods: The nanoparticle used for NANF study were silver nanoparticles and synthesized to three distinct average particle sizes of 10 nm, 40 nm and 70 nm. The effect of nanoparticle size, their concentrations and their tri and diparticle combinations upon phenol removal were studied., Results: Total surface areas (TSA) for various particle size and concentrations have been calculated and the highest was 4710 × 10(12 )nm(2 )for 10 nm particles and 180 ppm concentration while the lowest was for 2461 × 10(11) for 70 nm and 60 ppm concentrations. Tri and diparticle studies showed more phenol removal % than that of their individual particles, particularly for using small particles on large membrane pore size and large particles at low concentrations. These results have also been confirmed with COD and toxicity removal studies., Conclusions: The combination of nanoparticles adsorption and nanofiltration results in high phenol removal and mineralization, leading to the conclusion that NANF has very high potential for treating toxic chemical wastewaters.

Light-trapping structures are more demanding for optimal light absorption in thin film silicon solar cells. Accordingly, new design engineering of solar cells has been emphasized and found to be effective to achieve improved performance. This paper deals with a design of thin film silicon solar cells and explores the influence of bottom grating and combination of top and bottom (dual) grating as a part of back reflector with a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR). Use of metal layer as a part of back reflector has found to be promising for minimum requirement of DBR pairs. The effect of grating and anti-reflection coating thicknesses are also investigated for absorption enhancement. With optimization, high performance has been achieved from dual grating-based solar cell with a relative enhancement in short-circuit current approximately 68% while it was approximately 55% in case of bottom grating-based solar cell. Our designing efforts show enhanced absorption of light in UV and infrared part of solar spectrum.

Actinomycetes play an essential role in producing several bioactive compounds. In the present study, microbicidal and anti-inflammatory effects of metabolites from actinomycetes were investigated. Actinomycetes were isolated from north eastern Himalayan soil samples, India. The actinomycetes were investigated for their microbicidal property by conventional method and the active actinomycetes were identified by 16s rDNA sequence analyses. Further the metabolites were extracted and fractionated to evaluate the antimicrobial potency; they were subjected to GC-MS analysis. The active fraction was evaluated for selective toxicity and anti-inflammatory potential. Among isolated actinomycetes, EHA-2 showed potent antimicrobial activity and was identified as Actinomadura spadix. Fraction-8 from ethyl acetate extract of EHA-2 showed 100% inhibition against Candida sp. (MIC-80 μg/mL) and Enterococcus faecalis (MIC-80 μg/mL). The expression of GAPDH in primary cells and 16s rRNA levels on E. faecalis treated with fraction-8 revealed no toxicity to the primary cells. Fraction-8 also suppressed the paw thickness on carrageenan induced animals and also controlled the release of NO, TNFα and IL-1β levels on LPS induced RAW 264.7 cell lines. GC-MS profile of fraction-8 showed the presence of an antimicrobial agent 3,6 di-isobutyl 2,5 piperazinedione, which is the first report in A. spadix. The actinomycetes isolate EHA-2 can be proceed further to produce antibiotics.

Although the existence of infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) in India was first reported in 1964, no reports are available regarding its molecular detection and characterization. The present study was aimed to detect and characterize ILTV from recent respiratory disease complex (RDC) outbreaks of commercial poultry flocks in different parts of the country by using envelope glycoprotein G gene (US4 gene) based PCR and sequencing. A total of thirty two flocks with a history of RDC were investigated. Overall, all the strains/breeds of birds and all ages of birds are equally susceptible and depending on the severity, the clinical signs and gross lesions were varied. Out of 32 flocks investigated 10 were found positive for ILTV infection by PCR. The phylogenetic analyses of eight representative sequences in the present study deciphered that Indian ILT viruses are closely related to chicken embryo origin vaccine strains of Italy, USA, China and Brazil.
